Abstract

Circular Economy promotes the use of industrial materials during various phases of their active life. Construction and demolition waste (CDW) are one of those materials that can be reused several times without losing their properties, even improving them, by participating as substitutions in the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The large volume of CDW wastes makes this substitution one of the most valued in the world of cement at present; it is for this reason that two types of aggregates, siliceous and calcareous, have been selected as potential substitutions in the OPC. In all cases, it is a question of obtaining easily accessible pozzolanic cements, with little contamination and great economy. In this work, binary mixtures of OPC and CDW waste have been prepared, manufacturing mortars that have been studied by means of XRD, XRF, SEM/EDX, and ion diffusion. The results obtained so far indicate that CDW¿s are suitable for substitution in the OPC in variable proportions that their use improves the slowing down of diffusion for certain ions, so that can link the pore size with the capture of these ions, considering certain pores as traps for the diffusion of polluting ions.

15. Comparison of electrode position marking procedures on the cranial surface

Abstract

The study aimed to compare the conventional method of electrode marking with a new system, EPlacement, to improve accuracy and reduce the time burden on health care professionals.Ten health care professionals marked mannequin heads and adult volunteers using both methods. Time, accuracy, and usability of each method were analyzed. Three neurophysiological diagnostic tests were performed on mannequin heads: reversal pattern visual evoked potential (three electrodes required); somatosensory evoked potentials from the upper and lower extremities (five electrodes required); and standard intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring for spine surgery (nine electrodes required). Precision scanning of the mannequins with structured light and a printed hull were used to determine the actual locations of the electrodes of the 10/20 system.The new method based on the EPlacement device represents an improvement on conventional tape measure (TM) marking and may be considered within the group of advanced methods such as navigation systems since it leads to improvements of 34% (1.7 mm) for electrode positions in the Nasion-Inion and Left tragus-Right tragus lines and 77% (12.5 mm) for electrode positions using the approximate method. It reduces the time spent per test by an average of 1 min compared to the TM method. Health care staff survey results show a positive feedback regarding usability of the new method.The study showed that the EPlacement device improves accuracy, reduces time, and is easy to use compared to the conventional method of electrode marking. The EPlacement method can facilitate the complex task of electrode marking and ultimately contribute to improved patient outcomes. 20. Fluid Intelligence and Discriminative Operant Learning of Reinforcement Contingencies in a Fixed Ratio 3 Schedule

Abstract

Although intelligence has traditionally been identified as "the ability to learn" (Peterson, 1925), this relationship has been questioned in simple operant learning tasks (Spielberger, 1962). Nevertheless, recent pieces of research have demonstrated a strong and significant correlation between associative learning measures and intelligence (Kaufman, DeYoung, Gray, Brown, & Mackintosh, 2009; Williams, Myerson, & Hale, 2008). The present paper aims to examine the relationship between intelligence and learning, complying with the experimental conditions of discriminative conditioning in a relatively complex free operant task. To that end, a sample of 1600 subjects applying for an "ab initio" Air Traffic Control training course was tested. The task is expected to allow identifying the specific influence of intelligence on the discrimination between stimulus dimensions. The results show how the relation among learning and intelligence strengthen on those trials which are critical in terms of discrimination. (Contains 5 figures and 1 table.)

Abstract

Objective: To document the recovery of vascular services in Europe following the first COVID-19 pandemic peak. Methods: An online structured vascular service survey with repeated data entry between 23 March and 9 August 2020 was carried out. Unit level data were collected using repeated questionnaires addressing modifications to vascular services during the first peak (March – May 2020, “period 1”), and then again between May and June (“period 2”) and June and July 2020 (“period 3”). The duration of each period was similar. From 2 June, as reductions in cases began to be reported, centres were first asked if they were in a region still affected by rising cases, or if they had passed the peak of the first wave. These centres were asked additional questions about adaptations made to their standard pathways to permit elective surgery to resume. Results: The impact of the pandemic continued to be felt well after countries’ first peak was thought to have passed in 2020. Aneurysm screening had not returned to normal in 21.7% of centres. Carotid surgery was still offered on a case by case basis in 33.8% of centres, and only 52.9% of centres had returned to their normal aneurysm threshold for surgery. Half of centres (49.4%) believed their management of lower limb ischaemia continued to be negatively affected by the pandemic. Reduced operating theatre capacity continued in 45.5% of centres. Twenty per cent of responding centres documented a backlog of at least 20 aortic repairs. At least one negative swab and 14 days of isolation were the most common strategies used for permitting safe elective surgery to recommence. Conclusion: Centres reported a broad return of services approaching pre-pandemic “normal” by July 2020. Many introduced protocols to manage peri-operative COVID-19 risk. Backlogs in cases were reported for all major vascular surgeries.

29. A framework for estimating and visualising excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

COVID-19 related deaths underestimate the pandemic burden on mortality because they suffer from completeness and accuracy issues. Excess mortality is a popular alternative, as it compares observed with expected deaths based on the assumption that the pandemic did not occur. Expected deaths had the pandemic not occurred depend on population trends, temperature, and spatio-temporal patterns. In addition to this, high geographical resolution is required to examine within country trends and the effectiveness of the different public health policies. In this tutorial, we propose a framework using R to estimate and visualise excess mortality at high geographical resolution. We show a case study estimating excess deaths during 2020 in Italy. The proposed framework is fast to implement and allows combining different models and presenting the results in any age, sex, spatial and temporal aggregation desired. This makes it particularly powerful and appealing for online monitoring of the pandemic burden and timely policy making.

Abstract

In climbing both technical and physical skills have proven to be highly demanding and plenty of research has been done to prove so, but, coaches and climbers claim that psychological factors play a determining role and are key for high performance. It becomes necessary to develop new strategies to established empiric or theoretical base to support psychology to be applied to climbing. The aim of this study was to identify psychological variables needed to improve and excel as a climber and to operationalize implicit expert knowledge. To this end, using a mixed quantitative-qualitative method, four Spanish high-level coaches were interviewed and participated in a three-round focus group. Results found were organized and grouped according to the model of psychological dimensions proposed by Sánchez & Torregrosa in order to create an assessment tool that provides coaches information about climber's mental skills follow up. The final result was the creation of a Mobile APP checklist of psychological variables involved in climbing that can provide real time performance information, share individual climber's follow-up and comparison with other climbers. Future lines of research were proposed for the improvement of assessment tools for psychological skills in climbing that can help coaches and trainers to record, enhance and predict performance. Abstract

Según la problemática planteada lo que se busca con este proyecto de investigación es evaluar la norma del reglamento interno de telecomunicaciones (Ritel), y que entró en vigencia a partir del primero de julio del 2019, en la cual se construye como un instrumento y método técnico-legal, cuyo propósito único es garantizar la libre elección de operadores por parte de los usuarios y la prestación de los servicios para el desarrollo digital del país haciendo inclusión a la población más vulnerable. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior este reglamento será aplicado para la construcción de nuevas viviendas a través de propiedades horizontales y el tipo de vivienda que se desea construir hoy en día, es nuestro firme propósito orientar desde el punto de vista ingenieril aspectos que quedan ausentes y que de alguna forma no son claros y amplios en la norma, para que la copropiedad o propiedad horizontal hagan parte de una ciudad inteligente en el ámbito de Smart living (ambientes inteligentes). Lo que se espera con el desarrollo de la evaluación de la norma es orientar a las constructoras, Ingenieros civiles y arquitectos para que den cumplimiento correcto de la norma RITEL y mejorar el enfoque hacia la construcción de las ciudades inteligentes en un ambiente Smart living.

Abstract

Genetic variants that inactivate protein-coding genes are a powerful source of information about the phenotypic consequences of gene disruption: genes that are crucial for the function of an organism will be depleted of such variants in natural populations, whereas non-essential genes will tolerate their accumulation. However, predicted loss-of-function variants are enriched for annotation errors, and tend to be found at extremely low frequencies, so their analysis requires careful variant annotation and very large sample sizes1. Here we describe the aggregation of 125,748 exomes and 15,708 genomes from human sequencing studies into the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD). We identify 443,769 high-confidence predicted loss-of-function variants in this cohort after filtering for artefacts caused by sequencing and annotation errors. Using an improved model of human mutation rates, we classify human protein-coding genes along a spectrum that represents tolerance to inactivation, validate this classification using data from model organisms and engineered human cells, and show that it can be used to improve the power of gene discovery for both common and rare diseases., A catalogue of predicted loss-of-function variants in 125,748 whole-exome and 15,708 whole-genome sequencing datasets from the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) reveals the spectrum of mutational constraints that affect these human protein-coding genes.

44. Factores de riesgo para la presentación de bacteriuria en gatos con enfermedad del tracto urinario inferior: un análisis retrospectivo de 102 casos (2008 – 2015)

Abstract

The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the results of bacterial isolates and to determine the risk factors involved in the presentation of bacteriuria in cats with lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). Clinical records of feline patients (n=102) who underwent urinalysis and urine culture were collected. The following variables were considered: age, sex, reproductive status, breed, bodyweight, season, colour of urine, urine odour, urine density, pH, glucose, proteins, blood, leukocytes, erythrocytes, crystals and type of crystals. In 60.8% (62/102) of the samples, bacteria were isolated in urine, including E. coli 40.3% (25/62), Klebsiella sp 12.9% (8/62), Staphylococcus sp 12.9% (8 / 62), Proteus sp 8.1% (5/62), Enterobacter sp 8.1% (5/62) and Staphylococcus epidermidis 6.4% (4/62). Age, urinary density and presence of blood were statistically significant. In addition, it was determined that the urine density, the red colour of the urine, the presence of leukocytes and crystals represent risk factors (p, El objetivo de este estudio retrospectivo fue describir los resultados de aislados bacterianos y determinar los factores de riesgo involucrados en la presentación de bacteriuria en gatos con enfermedad del tracto urinario inferior (FLUTD). Abstract

Aim: The number of primary care paediatricians is decreasing in Europe without a justifiable reason. We aimed to compare the clinical practice of paediatricians and family doctors attending children and adolescents in primary care. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL, TRIP and Google Scholar were searched from December 2008 to February 2018. No language or study design restrictions were applied. Three reviewers assessed eligibility of the studies. Seven pairs of reviewers performed the data extraction and assessed the methodological quality independently. Discrepancies were resolved by consensus. Results: Fifty-four, out of 1150 studies preselected, were included. We found that paediatricians show more appropriate pharmacology prescription patterns for the illness being treated; they achieve higher vaccination rates and have better knowledge of vaccines and fewer doubts about vaccine safety; their knowledge and implementation of different screening tests are better; they prescribe psychoactive drugs more cautiously and more in line with current practice guidelines; their evaluation and treatment of obesity and lipid disorders follow criteria more consistently with current clinical practice guidelines; and they perform fewer diagnostic test, show a more suitable use of the test and request fewer referrals to specialists. Conclusion: According to published data, in developed countries, paediatricians provide higher quality care to children than family doctors.

Abstract

Rock art paintings present high sensitivity to light, and an exhaustive evaluation of the potential color degradation effects is essential for further conservation and preservation actions on these rock art systems. Microfading spectrometry (MFS) is a technique that provides time series of stochastic observations that represent color fading over time at the measured points on the surface under study. In this work, a reliable and robust modeling framework for a short and greatly fluctuating observation dataset collected over the surfaces of rock art paintings located on the walls of Cova Remigia in Ares del Maestrat, Castellon, Spain, is presented. The model is based on a spatially correlated spline-based time series model that takes into account prior information in the form of model derivatives to guarantee monotonicity and long-term saturation for predictions of new color fading estimates at unobserved locations on the surface. The correlation among the (spatially located) time series is modeled by defining Gaussian process (GP) priors over the spline coefficients across time series. The goal is to obtain a complete spatio-temporal mapping of color fading estimates for the study area, which results in very important and useful information that will potentially serve to create better policies and guidelines for heritage preservation and sustainable rock art cultural tourism.

Abstract

Sensor noise sources cause differences in the signal recorded across pixels in a single image and across multiple images. This study presents a Bayesian approach to decomposing and characterising the sensor noise sources involved in imaging with digital cameras. A Bayesian probabilistic model based on the (theoretical) model for noise sources in image sensing is fitted to a set of a time-series of images with different reflectance and wavelengths under controlled lighting conditions. The image sensing model is a complex model, with several interacting components dependent on reflectance and wavelength. The properties of the Bayesian approach of defining conditional dependencies among parameters in a fully probabilistic model, propagating all sources of uncertainty in inference, makes the Bayesian modelling framework more attractive and powerful than classical methods for approaching the image sensing model. A feasible correspondence of noise parameters to their expected theoretical behaviours and well-calibrated posterior predictive distributions with a small root mean square error for model predictions have been achieved in this study, thus showing that the proposed model accurately approximates the image sensing model. The Bayesian approach could be extended to formulate further components aimed at identifying even more specific parameters of the imaging process.

Physiological Reports published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of The Physiological Society and the American Physiological Society Background: The N3 wave is a vestibular evoked neurogenic potential detected in some patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss (PSNHL) during brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) analysis. In 1998, Kato et al. mentioned two electropositive waves preceding N3, which we named p1-p2, but no further description was given. Objective: We sought to demonstrate the reproducibility of these waves and hypothesize on their anatomic origin. Methods: We used two cohorts of patients with PSNHL. The first cohort comprised 10 patients with N3, allowing us to establish a new test with adequate electrophysiological conditions headed to detect p1-p2 waves (PN3EP). The second cohort consisted of two groups: group A comprised 10 patients in whom N3 was not detected; and group B comprised 20 patients presenting N3. PN3EP was performed in both groups, of which 50% had cervical myogenic vestibular evoked potentials (cVEMPs). Results: Only group B presented p1-p2. The PN3EP facilitated the identification of p1-p2 over BAEP analysis, and their presence correlated well with cVEMPs. Conclusions: P1-p2 may be covered due to inadequate BAEP setting conditions, and could be generated in the distal neural path that generates the N3 wave.
