Abstract Background Mini dental implants (MDIs) are becoming increasingly popular for rehabilitation of edentulous patients because of their several advantages. However, there is a lack of evidence on the osseointegration potential of the MDIs. The objective of the study was to histomorphometrically evaluate and compare bone apposition on the surface of MDIs and standard implants in a rabbit model. Methods Nine New Zealand white rabbits were used for the study to meet statistical criteria for adequate power. Total 18 3M™ESPE™ MDIs and 18 standard implants (Ankylos® Friadent, Dentsply) were inserted randomly into the tibia of rabbits (four implants per rabbit); animals were sacrificed after a 6-week healing period. The specimens were retrieved en bloc and preserved in 10% formaldehyde solution. Specimens were prepared for embedding in a light cure acrylic resin (Technovit 9100). The most central sagittal histological sections (30–40 μm thick) were obtained using a Leica SP 1600 saw microtome. After staining, the Leica DM2000 microscope was used, the images were captured using Olympus DP72 camera and associated software. Bone implant contact (BIC) was measured using Infinity Analyze software. Results All implants were osseointegrated. Histologic measures show mineralized bone matrix in intimate contact with the implant surface in both groups. The median BIC was 58.5 % (IQR 8.0) in the MDI group and 57.0 % (IQR 5.5) in the control group (P > 0.05; Mann-Whitney test). There were no statistical differences in osseointegration at 6 weeks between MDIs and standard implants in rabbit tibias. Conclusions Based on these results, it is concluded that osseointegration of MDIs is similar to that of standard implants.

This paper presents a mathematical study applied to Hepatitis B disease utilizing fractional calculus and numerical methods. We begin by discussing mathematical fundamentals, focusing on fractional calculus concepts and relevant numerical aspects for disease modeling. We then formulate the problem, describing a nonlinear fractional differential system that models hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and its response to drug therapy. A detailed theoretical analysis explores system properties and biological implications. We provide a qualitative analysis of the model, discussing important dynamic behaviors such as stability and parameter sensitivity. Subsequently, numerical analysis is performed to validate the model and estimate unknown parameters from patient data. Our findings include significant insights into biological parameters and their impact on therapeutic response. We conclude that the proposed fractional-order model is effective, offering optimal therapeutic strategies for hepatitis B. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advancements in Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning have impacted numerous fields, particularly through innovations like You Only Look Once for object detection and PaddleOCR for optical character recognition in computer vision. These technologies are pivotal in automating and enhancing the accuracy of tasks, such as detecting and extracting characters from identification badges, which have traditionally been prone to manual effort, time consumption, and errors. This study introduces an automated method for detecting and extracting textual data from identification badges, achieving notable efficiency and precision. Our results indicate a Character Error Rate of 0.028 for name recognition and a flawless score for registration number extraction, with a precision rate of 0.992 for the identification badge detection model. By highlighting the importance of automating character extraction and badge detection, this study showcases the ability of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning to revolutionize and improve data extraction processes with digital identification systems in professional environments.

Summary: Background & Aims: Overweight and obesity in children are a public health problem worldwide. There are few studies about nutritional interventions with different diet macronutrient distribution and their potential application in regulating food consumption in this age group. This study aimed to assess the impact of a high protein diet over satiety, energy intake, and body composition in children diagnosed with overweight (Ov) or obesity (Ob). Methods: School-age children (6–10 years) diagnosed Ov or Ob were randomized to receive three different dietary interventions for two months: standard diet (SD), high protein (HP) diet, and HP diet with calcium caseinate (HPC); BMI (Z-score and percentiles), body composition, indirect calorimetry (REEIC), energy intake (24-h recall questionnaire) and satiety (visual analog scale) were evaluated before and two-months after intervention. Results: Sixty-four children diagnosed with overweight (12.5%) and obesity (87.5%) were evaluated. There were no changes in the perception of satiety between groups (p>0.05). There was a tendency for a reduction in waist circumference in the HPC group after treatment (p=0.05). There were no significant differences in body composition, and children's growth was homogeneous between groups. No estado do Paraná a cultura do morangueiro é relevante, contudo, é um mercado que ainda está se expandindo. Conhecer e determinar os principais aspectos econômicos relacionados ao cultivo se torna essencial para o sucesso do empreendimento. O objetivo neste trabalho foi realizar um levantamento dos principais custos de implantação, condução e a viabilidade econômica da cultura do morangueiro em sistema orgânico de produção fora do solo em substrato em Laranjeiras do Sul-PR. O estudo foi realizado na safra de 2022. A pesquisa foi dividida em três etapas. A primeira foi realizada através de pesquisa bibliográfica de todos os aspectos do sistema orgânico de morangueiro fora do solo em substrato. A segunda etapa se constitui de um estudo de caso e a terceira etapa, referente às análises dos custos de produção e da viabilidade econômica da cultura. Os custos totais de condução e implantação de uma estufa de 250 m² de morangueiros com 1800 plantas atingiram R$ 39.147,00, cujos componentes mais significativos na composição dos custos foram os gastos com a estrutura, especialmente com postes de eucalipto. Para a análise de viabilidade se utilizou os seguintes índices: Valor Presente Líquido (VPL), Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR) e Payback descontado. Os resultados obtidos identificam viabilidade financeira na produção, pois o VPL foi de R$ 69.509,88; a TIR de 57%; a rentabilidade foi de R$ 25.097,00/ano em uma estufa de 250 m²; e o Payback foi de 1,6 anos. Analisando esses índices se afirmar que o investimento é viável e promissor.

Abstract The present study aimed for the molecular detection of Rickettsia spp. in ticks collected from military training areas in southeastern Brazil. Previously, a total of 9,374 free-living ticks in 66 military instruction areas of five Military Organizations (MOs) were collected. From these, a sample of 1,885 ticks was used for molecular analysis..DNA extraction was performed using the “HotSHOT” technique, and PCR was performed using the Rickettsia spp. gltA, 17kDa and ompA genes. It was found that 11 samples produced DNA sequences of sizes compatible with the Rickettsia spp. gltA and 17kDa gene and two of these, also for ompA, with a prevalence of 0.58% (11/1885). Analyses of amplified fragments of gltA identified the samples as Rickettsia bellii in seven nymphs of Amblyomma dubitatum and one nymph of Amblyomma sculptum, and identified samples as Rickettsia sp. in two nymphs of A. dubitatum and one of A. sculptum. This finding warns the possibility of the risk of exposure of military personnel to ticks infected with Rickettsia spp. during training.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and arterial pressure (AP) variability and their responses to head-up tilt test (HUTT) were investigated in Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) patients reporting tachycardia and/or postural hypotension. Besides tachycardia, PCS patients also showed attenuation of the following HRV parameters: RMSSD [square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent normal-to-normal (NN) intervals] from statistical measures; the power of RR (beat-to-beat interval) spectra at HF (high frequency) from the linear method spectral analysis; occurrence of 2UV (two unlike variation) pattern of RR from the nonlinear method symbolic analysis; and the new family of statistics named sample entropy, when compared to control subjects. Basal AP and LF (low frequency) power of systolic AP were similar between PCS patients and control subjects, while 0 V (zero variation) patterns of AP from the nonlinear method symbolic analysis were exacerbated in PCS patients. Despite tachycardia and a decrease in RMSSD, no parameter of HRV changed during HUTT in PCS patients compared to control subjects. PCS patients reassessed after 6 months showed higher HF power of RR spectra and a higher percentage of 2UV pattern of RR. Moreover, the reassessed PCS patients showed a lower occurrence of 0 V patterns of AP, while the HUTT elicited HR (heart rate) and AP responses identical to control subjects. The HRV and AP variability suggest an autonomic dysfunction with sympathetic predominance in PCS patients. In contrast, the lack of responses of HRV and AP variability indices during HUTT indicates a marked impairment of autonomic control. Of note, the reassessment of PCS patients showed that the noxious effect of COVID-19 on autonomic control tended to fade over time.

Objectives: Staphylococcus aureus and mutans group streptococci can cause, among many other diseases, infective endocarditis and postoperative infections. The reduction of the number of these microorganisms in the oral cavity prior to surgical procedures has been related to a decreased incidence of such occurrences. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single preprocedural rinse with 0.12% chlorhexidine solution (Periogard) on the salivary counts of S aureus and mutans group streptococci and determine maximal inhibitory dilutions (MID) of this and 0.05% cetylpyridinium chloride solution (Cepacol). Method and materials: Saliva was collected from 60 patients before and after 30-second mouthrinses with chlorhexidine and cultured in appropriate media. The number of microorganisms was calculated based on the colony-forming units (CFUs). For the in vitro MID determination, 25 strains of S aureus were seeded in the media containing one of the sequential dilutions of both antiseptics. Results: S aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Streptococcus sobrinus were initially isolated from 45%, 63%, and 28% of the patients, respectively. After rinsing with chlorhexidine, the reductions in the CFUs were above 99% for all the studied microorganisms. In the MID determination, all isolates were inhibited with 1/20 and 1/80 dilutions of cetylpyridinium and chlorhexidine, respectively. Dose-response curves were obtained for both antiseptics. Conclusion: Single preprocedural chlorhexidine mouthrinse is effective in reducing salivary microorganisms to levels currently considered safe to perform invasive procedures, and it is still effective in a 1:80 dilution.
