Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant global health threat, primarily stemming from its misuse and overuse in both veterinary and public healthcare systems. The consequences of AMR are severe, leading to more severe infections, increased health protection costs, prolonged hospital stays, unresponsive treatments, and elevated fatality rates. The impact of AMR is direct and far-reaching, particularly affecting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring the urgency for concerted global actions to achieve these objectives. Disproportionately affecting underprivileged populations, AMR compounds their vulnerabilities, pushing them further into poverty. Moreover, AMR has ramifications for food production, jeopardizing sustainable agriculture and diminishing the livelihoods of farmers. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in underprivileged areas heightens the risk of complications and mortality. Climate change further contributes to AMR, as evidenced by increased instances of foodborne salmonellosis and the development of antibiotic resistance, resulting in substantial healthcare costs. Effectively addressing AMR demands collaboration among governments, entrepreneurs, and the public sector to establish institutions and policies across all regulatory levels. Expanding SDG 17, which focuses on partnerships for sustainable development, would facilitate global antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, technology transfer, surveillance systems, and investment in vaccine and drug research. The World Bank's SDG database, tracking progress towards sustainable development, reveals a concerning picture with only a 15% success rate till 2023 and 48% showing deviation, underscoring a global gap exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tackling AMR's global impact necessitates international cooperation, robust monitoring, and evaluation methods. The five priorities outlined guide SDG implementation, while impoverished countries must address specific challenges in their implementation efforts. Addressing AMR and its impact on the SDGs is a multifaceted challenge that demands comprehensive and collaborative solutions on a global scale.

Abstract This paper is designed for heavy pulsars coming from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer. The research model is describe by Einstein field equations for anisotropic fluid configuration with spherical symmetry. As per present perceptiveness, modified non-linear Van der Waals equation of state is used to relate physical variables. The continuity of inner and outer matter is obtained by comparing inner spacetime to outer Schwarzschild metric. The physical viability of this model is evaluated and further it is compared with observational data of pulsars PSR J0348+0432, PSR J0740+6620 and PSR J0030+0451. The model fulfils all physical and mathematical characteristics of the dense structure studies. It offers the factual proofs carried by evolution of celestial configurations. The working model presented here is physically viable and shows stable behaviour.

Abstract Background Co-morbidity with respiratory viruses including influenza A, cause varying degree of morbidity especially in TB patients compared to general population. This study estimates the risk factors associated with influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 in TB patients with ILI. Methods A cohort of tuberculosis (TB) patients who were admitted to and enrolled in a TB Directly Observed Therapy Program (DOTs) in tertiary care hospitals of Lahore (Mayo Hospital and Infectious Disease Hospital) were followed for 12 weeks. At the start of study period, to record influenza-like illness (ILI), a symptom card was provided to all the participants. Every participant was contacted once a week, in person. When the symptoms were reported by the participant, a throat swab was taken for the detection of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09. A nested case control study was conducted and TB patients with ILI diagnosed with influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 by conventional RT-PCR were selected as cases, while those who tested negative by conventional RT-PCR were enrolled as controls. All cases and controls in the study were interviewed face-to-face in the local language. Epidemiological data about potential risk factors were collected on a predesigned questionnaire. Logistic analysis was conducted to identify associated risk factors in TB patients with ILI. Results From the main cohort of TB patients (n = 152) who were followed during the study period, 59 (39%) developed ILI symptoms; of them, 39 tested positive for influenza A (H1N1)pdm09, while 20 were detected negative for influenza A (H1N1)pdm09. Abstract Climate change, caused by both natural and human activities, poses significant threats to global health, including rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental disruptions. The One Health concept, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is crucial in addressing these challenges. Climate change is linked to the emergence and resurgence of infectious diseases, resulting in substantial economic losses worldwide due to outbreaks, floods, and disrupted trade, among other factors. Therefore, it is crucial to adapt to this changing climate to safeguard One Health. By implementing a One Health approach, we can effectively address the consequences of climate change and make substantial contributions to health and food safety. This approach also holds the potential to mitigate economic losses, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Additionally, in the future, research interventions based on the One Health framework may offer sustainable solutions to combat climate change.

The interaction between biochar application and calcium ions (Ca2+) in plants, in terms of activating plant defense mechanism would be useful to improve plant resilience and sustainable agriculture. This review aims to highlight the possible connection between biochar-induced changes in soil physicochemical properties, microbial interactions, and Ca2+ dynamics, ultimately leading to promote the plant defense mechanisms. We are also interested to discuss the role of Ca2+ signaling in coordinating plant responses to various biotic and abiotic stresses such as pathogen and insects attacks, cold or heat stress and drought stress as well as how Ca2+ fluxes, calcium-binding proteins, and ion channels are influenced by biochar application in the soil environment. Furthermore, we examine the impact of biochar on plant Ca2+ signaling pathways and how it can prime defense genes and strengthen call wall barriers to improve plant immunity. Despite significant progress, there is a need for interdisciplinary collaboration to fully sort out the mechanism of Ca2+ signaling in plants and induction of Ca2+ ions by biochar induction in soil environment. Advanced imaging techniques, proteomics and omics approaches could be helpful to unlock the complex interaction between biochar application and Ca2+ signaling. Overall, this review contributes substantially to the literature by describing the relationship between biochar and Ca2+ signaling and providing insights into novel approaches for enhancing plant defense mechanisms and development of sustainable agricultural solutions.

The focus on sustainable utilization of agricultural waste is currently a leading area of scientific research, driving significant advancements in technology and circular economy models. The fundamental capacity of bio-based products, bioprocessing techniques, and the crucial involvement of microbial treatments are opening opportunities for efficient solutions in various industries. One of the most popular green vegetables, peas are members of the Fabaceae family and have a pod-like structure. Every year, a significant amount of pea pods is discarded as waste products of peas that have negative impacts on our environment. In this comprehensive review, we explore innovative methods for utilizing pea pods to minimize their environmental footprint and optimize their viability across multiple industries. A large portion of the pea processing industry's output consists of pea pods. Variety of proteins, with major classes being globulin and albumin (13%), dietary fiber (43–58%), and minerals are abundant in these pods. Because of their diverse physiochemical properties, they find applications in many diverse fields. The porous pea pods comprised cellulose (61.35%) and lignin (22.12%), which could make them superior adsorbents. The components of these byproducts possess valuable attributes that make them applicable across treatment of wastewater, production of biofuels, synthesis of biocolors, development of nutraceuticals, functional foods, and enzymes for the textile industry, modification of oil, and inhibition of steel corrosion.

Abstract Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is an economically potent crop in many countries including Pakistan, India, and China. For the last three decades, cotton production is under the constant stress of cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) caused by begomoviruses/satellites complex that is transmitted through the insect pest, whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). In 2018, we identified a highly recombinant strain; Cotton leaf curl Multan virus-Rajasthan (CLCuMuV-Raj), associated with the Cotton leaf curl Multan betasatellite-Vehari (CLCuMuBVeh). This strain is dominant in cotton-growing hub areas of central Punjab, Pakistan, causing the third epidemic of CLCuD. In the present study, we have explored the CLCuD diversity from central to southern districts of Punjab (Faisalabad, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Rahimyar Khan) and the major cotton-growing region of Sindh (Tandojam), Pakistan for 2 years (2020–2021). Interestingly, we found same virus (CLCuMuV-Raj) and associated betasatellite (CLCuMuBVeh) strain that was previously reported with the third epidemic in the central Punjab region. Furthermore, we found minor mutations in two genes of CLCuMuV-Raj C4 and C1 in 2020 and 2021 respectively as compared to its isolates in 2018, which exhibited virus evolution. Surprisingly, we did not find these mutations in CLCuMuV-Raj isolates identified from Sindh province. The findings of the current study represent the stability of CLCuMuV-Raj and its spread toward the Sindh province where previously Cotton leaf curl Kokhran virus (CLCuKoV) and Cotton leaf curl Shahdadpur virus (CLCuShV) have been reported. The findings of the current study demand future research on CLCuD complex to explore the possible reasons for prevalence in the field and how the virus-host-vector compatible interaction can be broken to develop resistant cultivars.

Introduction The burden of multimorbidity is recognised increasingly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), creating a strong emphasis on the need for effective evidence-based interventions. Core outcome sets (COS) appropriate for the study of multimorbidity in LMICs do not presently exist. These are required to standardise reporting and contribute to a consistent and cohesive evidence-base to inform policy and practice. We describe the development of two COS for intervention trials aimed at preventing and treating multimorbidity in adults in LMICs.Methods To generate a comprehensive list of relevant prevention and treatment outcomes, we conducted a systematic review and qualitative interviews with people with multimorbidity and their caregivers living in LMICs. We then used a modified two-round Delphi process to identify outcomes most important to four stakeholder groups (people with multimorbidity/caregivers, multimorbidity researchers, healthcare professionals and policymakers) with representation from 33 countries. Consensus meetings were used to reach agreement on the two final COS. Registration: https://www.comet-initiative.org/Studies/Details/1580.Results The systematic review and qualitative interviews identified 24 outcomes for prevention and 49 for treatment of multimorbidity. An additional 12 prevention and 6 treatment outcomes were added from Delphi round 1. Delphi round 2 surveys were completed by 95 of 132 round 1 participants (72.0%) for prevention and 95 of 133 (71.4%) participants for treatment outcomes. Consensus meetings agreed four outcomes for the prevention COS: (1) adverse events, (2) development of new comorbidity, (3) health risk behaviour and (4) quality of life; and four for the treatment COS: (1) adherence to treatment, (2) adverse events, (3) out-of-pocket expenditure and (4) quality of life.Conclusion Following established guidelines, we developed two COS for trials of interventions for multimorbidity prevention and treatment, specific to adults in LMIC contexts. We recommend their inclusion in future trials to meaningfully advance the field of multimorbidity research in LMICs.PROSPERO registration number CRD42020197293.

Valve surgery is common in cardiac procedures, with fasteners like COR-KNOT® and hand-tied knots used for knot securing. This study compares their efficacy in valve surgery patients. We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Central until August 2023. Outcomes assessed included aortic cross-clamp time (AXT), cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time, valvular regurgitation, mortality, prolonged ventilatory support, atrial fibrillation, postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and renal failure. Subgroup analysis was performed for minimally invasive and open cardiac surgery. We used a random effects model for analysis. The study aimed to address the recurring outbreaks of microbial diseases in shrimp aquaculture in Bangladesh the study focused on the utilization of bacteriophages and non-pathogenic Vibrio. The bacteriophages were isolated from sewage water sample collected from shrimp farm, hatchery, and the JUST campus. The bacteriophages were tested for their ability to infect different Vibrio strains in order to assess their bacteriolytic activity. Non-pathogenic Vibrio strains were obtained from suspected diseased isolates collected from the south-western region of Bangladesh through PCR amplification. In laboratory tests, the bacteriophages successfully infected 91 % of the tested Vibrio strains (19 out of 21 strains). In the experimental unit, shrimp treated with phage prophylaxis and phage treatment demonstrated notable protection against AHPND and was able to survive a deadly bacterial challenge. A total of 35 suspected diseased isolates were tested, and PCR amplification revealed 6 non-pathogenic Vibrio strains. In field trials, cultured bacteriophages were applied at a concentration of 1.5×106 PFU/ml, while non-pathogenic Vibrio was applied at 5×105 CFU/ml. The trials showed increased protection against infections and no severe deaths during the adaptive research phase. The cultured shrimp were analyzed morphologically and showed a muscle gut ratio greater than 4:1. No abnormal deformities were observed in their appendages or overall body, suggesting their overall health and well-being. The bacteriological tests conducted on the shrimp samples (application of bacteriophages and non-pathogenic Vibrio) revealed that 18 % of them were infected with bacteria, primarily Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and other bacterial species. Despite this, the infections did not lead to a disease outbreak; PCR amplification showed negative results for AHPND, White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), and Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP). The results highlight the potential of using bacteriophages and non-pathogenic Vibrio as a sustainable solution for preventing and controlling microbial diseases in shrimp aquaculture. Furthermore, this study will contribute valuable insights into the development of alternative strategies to combat antibiotic resistance and promote the growth of the shrimp industry in Bangladesh.

The Sundarbans, located in Bangladesh, is the world's largest mangrove forest with a rich and diverse microbial community. The main objective of this study was to use 16S rRNA sequencing to identify the bacterial community in the Sundarban mangrove forest, particularly pathogenic bacteria to aquatic organisms. This study conducted in Bangladesh collected 225 samples of soil, water, fish, and shellfish from five locations with a typical mangrove environment. All samples underwent genomic DNA extraction, quantification, gel documentation, and subsequent sequencing. Sanger sequencing was then carried out, followed by sequencing 11 concentrated samples using the universal bacterial primer 16S rRNA. The study found 872 bacterial species, 94 genera, 38 families, and 6 phyla. Pseudomonades or proteobacteria accounted for 92% of the phylum composition, with firmicutes, bactericides, cyanobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and actinobacteria also present at smaller percentages. Chromatiaceae had the highest species count (20.3%), followed by Ectothiorhodospiraceae (15.5%), Methylococcaceae (12.3%), Moraxellaceae (10.7%), Thiotrichaceae (8.7%), Idiomarinaceae (5.4%), and smaller groups. All the species that were identified were gram-negative bacteria and were found in different environments, mainly halophilic ones. Based on 16 s rRNA sequencing, additional experimental and clinical data, as well as NCBI (BLAST), approximately 49.3% of the 872 bacterial species are typically harmless and not classified as pathogenic. The pathogenic characteristics of 24.9% of the species are still unidentified. 13.4% showed either pathogenic or non-pathogenic characteristics (a bacterium as having the potential to exhibit pathogenic or non-pathogenic characteristics in certain circumstances), while 8.4% were exclusively pathogenic, potentially capable of causing disease. Also, the bacterial species are categorized as 2.6% non-highly pathogenic (a bacterium can still have a significant impact on health, especially in weakened immune systems or other underlying health conditions), 1.3% sometimes pathogenic and 0.1% potentially pathogenic (a bacterium don't always cause disease). Sequence analysis, combination of phylogenetic, biochemical characterization (data were not shown), and other experimental validation conclude a genetic baseline of bacterial community, this research may serve as a valuable reference for future ecological and taxonomical studies as well as addressing further research scope on bacterial diversity found in the Sundarbans mangrove of Bangladesh.

ObjectiveThere is no head-to-head comparison of the safety and efficacy of virtual versus in-office insulin pump initiation for youth with type 1 diabetes in the US. The study’s aim was to determine the safety and efficacy of virtual versus in-office pump initiation in pediatric type 1 diabetes.Research design and methodsA longitudinal retrospective study of 112 subjects: 65% (n=73), ages 11.2 ± 3.8 years(y), received in-office training; and 35% (n=39), ages 12.0 ± 4.0y, received virtual training. The number of White subjects was 40 (55%) in the in-office group, and 25 (66%) in the remote group; while Black subjects were 11 (15%) in the in-office group and 4 (10%) in the virtual group. Data were collected at pump initiation, 3 and 6 months.ResultsThere were no significant differences in sex, race, height, weight, BMI, and the duration of diabetes between the groups at baseline. The integration of modern technology in healthcare education, mainly through digital media platforms, is pivotal for enhancing healthcare professionals' proficiency in birth preparedness and complication readiness (BP/CR). This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of digital media interventions on BP/CR knowledge among healthcare providers, reflecting on broader implications for global healthcare delivery and patient education. In this quasi-experimental study, 70 healthcare professionals were recruited using a nonprobability convenience sampling method. The training protocol was developed after an in-depth literature review, while the evaluation questionnaire incorporated provider-level index indicators aligned with Johns Hopkins University's BP/CR guidelines to ensure a comprehensive assessment framework. The intervention utilized widely accessible digital platforms, i.e., WhatsApp and email, aimed to deliver educational content, with its effectiveness gauged through pre- and postintervention assessments analyzed using SPSS 25.00. The study findings demonstrated significant improvements in BP/CR knowledge postintervention across various care domains. The results showed significant increases in BP/CR knowledge postintervention: focused antenatal care knowledge improved from 34.00% to 69.00% (p < 0.001), and knowledge of third-stage labor management increased from 21.00% to 56.00% (p < 0.001). Furthermore, significant improvements were also observed in neonatal care and emergency obstetric and neonatal care management knowledge (p < 0.001). These results affirm the role of digital media in improving healthcare education, suggesting its integration into healthcare policies to reduce maternal mortality and support professionals in resource-limited settings.

The main purpose of this work is to study the third Hankel determinant for classes of Bernoulli lemniscate-related functions by introducing new subclasses of star-like functions represented by SLλ* and RLλ. In many geometric and physical applications of complex analysis, estimating sharp bounds for problems involving the coefficients of univalent functions is very important because these coefficients describe the fundamental properties of conformal maps. In the present study, we defined sharp bounds for function-coefficient problems belonging to the family of SLλ* and RLλ. Most of the computed bounds are sharp. This study will encourage further research on the sharp bounds of analytical functions related to new image domains.

Background: Bladder cancer is the sixth most common malignancy in the United States (US). Despite its high prevalence and the significant potential benefits of early detection, no reliable, cost-effective screening algorithm exists for asymptomatic patients at risk. Nonetheless, reports of incidentally identified early bladder cancer on CT/MRI scans performed for other indications are emerging in the literature. This represents a new opportunity for early detection, with over 80 million CT scans performed in the US yearly, 40% of which are abdominopelvic CTs. This investigation aims to define the imaging features of early bladder cancer, with the mission of facilitating early diagnosis. Methods: Following IRB approval with a waiver of informed consent, a retrospective review was performed, identifying 624 patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer diagnosed at Johns Hopkins Hospital between 2000 and 2019. Of these patients, 99 patients underwent pelvic CT within the 5 years preceding pathologic diagnosis. These imaging studies were reviewed retrospectively to evaluate for the presence and features of any focal bladder wall abnormality. Results: Median age at the time of pathologic diagnosis was 70 years (range: 51–88 years), and 82% (81/99) of patients were male. A total of 226 CT studies were reviewed. The number of studies per patient ranged from 1 to 33. Median time interval between all available imaging and pathologic diagnosis was 14 months. A total of 62% (141/226) of the scans reviewed were performed for indications other than suspected urinary tract cancer (UTC). A bladder wall mass was visualized in 67% (66/99) of patients and on 35% (78/226) of scans performed before diagnosis. The majority (84%, 67/80) of masses were intraluminal. Mean transverse long- and short-axis measurements were 24 mm and 17 mm, respectively, with long dimension measurements ranging between 5 and 59 mm. Conclusions: Early bladder cancer was visualized on CT preceding pathologic diagnosis in more than 2/3 of patients, and the majority of scans were performed for indications other than suspected urinary tract cancer/UTC symptoms. These results suggest that cross-sectional imaging performed for other indications can serve as a resource for opportunistic bladder cancer screening, particularly in high-risk patients.

Abstract Background Global warming and irregular changes in temperature are a serious threat to plant growth with a significant negative impact on yield. Global maize productivity has decreased significantly due to sudden temperature fluctuations and heat waves especially in the regions severely hit by climate change. Results The current study demonstrates the potential of beneficial bacteria for inducing heat tolerance in maize during early growth. Three Bacillus spp. AH-08, AH-67, SH-16, and one Pseudomonas spp. SH-29 showed the ability to grow and exhibited multiple plant-beneficial traits up to 45 ± 2 °C. At temperatures of 45 and 50 °C, Bacillus sp. SH-16 exhibited upregulation of two small heat shock proteins (HSP) of 15 and 30 kDa, while SH-16 and AH-67 showed upregulation of two large HSP of 65 and 100 kDa. Plant-inoculation with the consortium B3P (3 Bacillus + 1 Pseudomonas spp.) was carried out on six hybrid maize varieties pre-grown at 25 ± 2 ºC. Heat shock was applied to 10-day-old seedlings as: 3 h at 38ºC, 48 h recovery period, and then 48 h at 42ºC. The B3P treatment showed significant improvement in the overall plant growth (plant height, root & shoot fresh & dry weight, root and leaf area) with a higher level of CAT, POD, total chlorophyll, and carotenoids, while low concentration of MDA. A non-significant difference was observed in case of total cell protein and amino acids after B3P-treatment under stress. The expression of HSP1 and HSP18 in Malka and YH-5427 while HSP70 and HSP101 were higher in FH-1046 and Gohar as compared to non-inoculated treatment. Conclusions These findings indicate that heat-tolerant plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria (Ht-PGPR) exert versatile, multiphasic and differential response to improve plant growth and heat-tolerance in different maize varieties during seedling/ early vegetative growth. Subsequent research will be focused on the field evaluation of these PGPR to see the field and yield response of this consortium under natural temperature fluctuations in field.

Abstract Background Influenza and tuberculosis both cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the burden of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 virus infection among human tuberculosis patients and the general population. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted among a cohort group (TB positive patients) as exposed and a comparison group (general population) as non-exposed. A total of 304 participants were recruited in both groups and followed for a period of 12 weeks. Of the 304 concurrently enrolled individuals, 152 were TB-positive patients (cohort group) and 152 were from the general population (comparison group).To calculate the sample size, the power of study was kept at 80% for detecting a difference at 5% alpha level assuming the 25% prevalence of respiratory viruses in cohort group compared to 12.5% in general population. An oropharyngeal swab was taken from a participant with symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI). Samples were tested by conventional reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the detection of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09. All statistical analyses were conducted using R software. Results A total of 95 participants developed influenza-like illness (ILI) symptoms. Among these, 64 tested positive for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, of which 39 were from the exposed group and 25 were from the non-exposed group. During the 12-week period of follow-up, the influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 incidence rate was 20 per 1000 people. The risk of testing positive for influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 was 1.66 times higher in the exposed group compared to the non-exposed group. The cumulative incidence indicated that 25% of the TB cohort and 16% of the comparison group were at risk of getting influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 during the 12 weeks of follow-up. Conclusion Participants from the TB cohort had a higher incidence of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 than the general population suggesting that they should be prioritized for influenza vaccination.

During 21st century, abiotic stress has adversely affected the agriculture crop production around the globe. Keeping in view the food requirement under water shortage condition, a study was planned to investigate the effect of thiamine application on radish crop under drought stress conditions on plant. For study purpose, two varieties of locally available radish (‘Early-Milo’ and ‘Laal-Pari’) were grown with normal water application as well as thiamine (100 mg L-1) application while maintaining a stress condition (60% field capacity). Increasing water deficit stress linearly reduced plant growth, yield and biomass in both varieties by reducing water use efficiency, while significantly enhanced these attributes with thiamine application. Thiamine application under drought stress exerted significant impacts on physiological attributes in both varieties, including enhanced osmolytic attribute in drought conditions and improvements in superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), H2O2, and malondialdehyde (MDA) activities in plant leaves. Antioxidant and osmoprotectant upregulation positively linked to radish crop's drought tolerance. Moreover, PCA and heatmap analysis revealed a significant interdependence among various traits and interconnected in determining the crop's capacity to sustain growth under conditions of drought stress. In crux, thiamine application conclusively enhances radish growth, yield, biomass, physio-chemical and osmolytic attributes, ionic composition and enzymatic antioxidant potential. Therefore, it is recommended to consider the application of thiamine in commercial agriculture practices to mitigate the negative effects of drought stress on radish crop production.

ABSTRACTBovine tuberculosis (bTB), traditionally associated with Mycobacterium bovis, presents significant public health and economic challenges worldwide. This study investigated the causative agents of bTB in slaughtered cattle and buffalo in Lahore, Pakistan. Of the 3,581 animals screened, 34 were identified with gross TB-like lesions. The lesions were processed for culture, PCR, and Sanger sequencing to identify the causative agents of the disease. The results identified 10 Mycobacterium orygis and 8 Mycobacterium tuberculosis sensu stricto isolates. Whole-genome sequencing was performed on two M. orygis isolates, and the sequences were phylogenetically compared to 93 publicly available M. orygis sequences. The results also demonstrated that the JB21 and JB22 primers, which have been previously commonly applied to detect M. bovis in Pakistan, are unable to distinguish between M. tuberculosis complex subspecies. The identification of M. orygis and M. tuberculosis as causative agents of bTB in this slaughterhouse in Punjab may have important implications in identifying cases of zoonotic TB in humans and applying appropriate molecular tools to identify the prevalence of the disease. The data from this study align with recent findings suggesting M. orygis is the predominant cause of bTB in South Asia.IMPORTANCEThe study findings hold significant relevance to the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, as they directly impact the field. The first-time identification of Mycobacterium orygis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the predominant causative agents of bovine tuberculosis in Lahore, Pakistan underscores the urgent need for enhanced diagnostic methods. The study emphasizes the importance of improved assays for the accurate detection and differentiation of Mycobacterium subspecies. Additionally, the research addresses zoonotic risk assessment and public health implications, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach that integrates clinical microbiology with veterinary and human health sectors. These insights contribute to clinical microbiology knowledge, shaping effective strategies for disease prevention, surveillance, and control. The study’s potential to advance the field makes it well suited for publication in the Microbiology Spectrum journal.

This research explores how filamentary objects behave when they collapse in the presence of exotic material. To accomplish this, we employ Palatini R,T theory as a candidate for exotic material. We derive the collapsing equation by enforcing the Darmois junction condition on the collapsed surface boundary. At this boundary, we obtain that the radial pressure is proportionate to the time-dependent term of the field and is not zero. Lastly, we investigate the correlation between dark matter and gravitational waves and find that exotic terms disrupt the transmission of gravitational waves. It is worthwhile to mention here that our results (in both formalisms, metric approach and Palatini approach) reduce to (R) gravity and general relativity.

The deployment of omics technologies has obtained an incredible boost over the past few decades with the advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, innovative bioinformatics tools, and the deluge of available biological information. The major omics technologies in the limelight are genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and phenomics. These biotechnological advances have modernized crop breeding and opened new horizons for developing crop varieties with improved traits. The genomes of several crop species are sequenced, and a huge number of genes associated with crucial economic traits have been identified. These identified genes not only provide insights into the understanding of regulatory mechanisms of crop traits but also decipher practical grounds to assist in the molecular breeding of crops. This review discusses the potential of omics technologies for the acquisition of biological information and mining of the genes associated with important agronomic traits in important food and fiber crops, such as wheat, rice, maize, potato, tomato, cassava, and cotton. Different functional genomics approaches for the validation of these important genes are also highlighted. Furthermore, a list of genes discovered by employing omics approaches is being represented as potential targets for genetic modifications by the latest genome engineering methods for the development of climate-resilient crops that would in turn provide great impetus to secure global food security.

Standard race adjustments for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and reference creatinine can yield a lower acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence among African American patients than non-race adjusted estimates. We developed two race-agnostic computable phenotypes that assess kidney health among 139,152 subjects admitted to the University of Florida Health between 1/2012-8/2019 by removing the race modifier from the estimated GFR and estimated creatinine formula used by the race-adjusted algorithm (race-agnostic algorithm 1) and by utilizing 2021 CKD-EPI refit without race formula (race-agnostic algorithm 2) for calculations of the estimated GFR and estimated creatinine. We compared results using these algorithms to the race-adjusted algorithm in African American patients. Using clinical adjudication, we validated race-agnostic computable phenotypes developed for preadmission CKD and AKI presence on 300 cases. Race adjustment reclassified 2,113 (8%) to no CKD and 7,901 (29%) to a less severe CKD stage compared to race-agnostic algorithm 1 and reclassified 1,208 (5%) to no CKD and 4,606 (18%) to a less severe CKD stage compared to race-agnostic algorithm 2. Of 12,451 AKI encounters based on race-agnostic algorithm 1, race adjustment reclassified 591 to No AKI and 305 to a less severe AKI stage. Of 12,251 AKI encounters based on race-agnostic algorithm 2, race adjustment reclassified 382 to No AKI and 196 (1.6%) to a less severe AKI stage. The phenotyping algorithm based on refit without race formula performed well in identifying patients with CKD and AKI with a sensitivity of 100% (95% confidence interval [CI] 97%-100%) and 99% (95% CI 97%-100%) and a specificity of 88% (95% CI 82%-93%) and 98% (95% CI 93%-100%), respectively. Race-agnostic algorithms identified substantial proportions of additional patients with CKD and AKI compared to race-adjusted algorithm in African American patients. The phenotyping algorithm is promising in identifying patients with kidney disease and improving clinical decision-making.

People living with multimorbidity (PLWMM) have multiple needs and require long-term personalised care, which necessitates an integrated people-centred approach to healthcare. However, people-centred care may risk being a buzzword in global health and cannot be achieved unless we consider and prioritise the lived experience of the people themselves. This study captures the lived experiences of PLWMM in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by exploring their perspectives, experiences, and aspirations.We analysed 50 semi-structured interview responses from 10 LMICs across three regions—South Asia, Latin America, and Western Africa—using an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach.The bodily, social, and system experiences of illness by respondents were multidirectional and interactive, and largely captured the complexity of living with multimorbidity. Despite expensive treatments, many experienced little improvements in their conditions and felt that healthcare was not tailored to their needs. Disease management involved multiple and fragmented healthcare providers with lack of guidance, resulting in repetitive procedures, loss of time, confusion, and frustration. Financial burden was exacerbated by lost productivity and extreme finance coping strategies, creating a vicious cycle. Against the backdrop of uncertainty and disruption due to illness, many demonstrated an ability to cope with their conditions and navigate the healthcare system. Respondents’ priorities were reflective of their desire to return to a pre-illness way of life—resuming work, caring for family, and maintaining a sense of independence and normalcy despite illness. Respondents had a wide range of needs that required financial, health education, integrated care, and mental health support.In discussion with respondents on outcomes, it appeared that many have complementary views about what is important and relevant, which may differ from the outcomes established by clinicians and researchers. This knowledge needs to complement and be incorporated into existing research and treatment models to ensure healthcare remains focused on the human and our evolving needs.

Objective: To determine the frequency of gall bladder carcinoma after cholecystectomy for symptomatic gallstone disease and to determine the most commonly affected age group and its gender-based predominance in our population. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Histopathology Lab, Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital, Peshawar Pakistan, from Jan 2015 to Jan 2021. Methodology: A total of 995 patients of all age groups and of either gender were included in our study. The demographics, clinical data of the patient (signs, symptoms and ultrasound report), and histopathology findings were recorded. Results: The mean age of our study participants was 41.5±15 years. Cholecystitis was found in 807(81.1%) patients, acute cholecystitis in 101(10.2%) patients, and chronic cholecystitis with cholesterols in 72(7.2%) patients. Benign polyps were found in 6(0.6%) patients, while carcinoma gall bladder was found in 9(0.9%) patients. The frequency of gall bladder carcinoma was high in females (n=774, 66.7%). The most commonly affected age group affected by gall bladder carcinoma was 51 to 60 years. Conclusion: Routine histopathology of all grossly looking normal gall bladder specimens after cholecystectomy should be done as it is the only measure to detect carcinoma gall bladder at early stages.

Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence and degree of Burnout during the COVID 19 pandemic in practicing Pakistani dentists. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted dental practices worldwide, leading to increased stress and burnout among dental practitioners. Burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment, can have detrimental effects on the quality of care and patient safety. Previous studies have shown high rates of burnout among healthcare workers, including dentists. The pandemic has added new challenges, such as financial losses and increased costs due to safety protocols. Recognizing and managing burnout is crucial to mitigate its severe consequences. By understanding the prevalence of burnout in this unique context, strategies can be developed to support dental practitioners and improve their well-being. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a 22-items based validated Maslach Burnout Inventory. The study was conducted between July and September 2021. Practicing dentists across Pakistan were approached via social media platforms. The questions were answered on a 7-point Likert scale. The sums of the scores were used as the evaluation criteria. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 24. Shapiro Wilk test was used to check normality of data. Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests were utilized to analyze the differences in the prevalence of burnout amongst the different demographic groups. A P-value of

Yellow mosaic disease (YMD) is one of the major devastating constraints to soybean production in Pakistan. In the present study, we report the identification of resistant soybean germplasm and a novel mutation linked with disease susceptibility. Diverse soybean germplasm were screened to identify YMD-resistant lines under natural field conditions during 2016-2020. The severity of YMD was recorded based on symptoms and was grouped according to the disease rating scale, which ranges from 0 to 5, and named as highly resistant (HR), moderately resistant (MR), resistant (R), susceptible (S), moderately susceptible (MS), and highly susceptible (HS), respectively. A HR plant named “NBG-SG Soybean” was identified, which showed stable resistance for 5 years (2016-2020) at the experimental field of the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad, Pakistan, a location that is a hot spot area for virus infection. HS soybean germplasm were also identified as NBG-47 (PI628963), NBG-117 (PI548655), SPS-C1 (PI553045), SPS-C9 (PI639187), and cv. NARC-2021. The YMD adversely affected the yield and a significant difference was found in the potential yield of NBG-SG-soybean (3.46 ± 0.13a t/ha) with HS soybean germplasm NARC-2021 (0.44 ± 0.01c t/ha) and NBG-117 (1.12 ± 0.01d t/ha), respectively. The YMD incidence was also measured each year (2016-2020) and data showed a significant difference in the percent disease incidence in the year 2016 and 2018 and a decrease after 2019 when resistant lines were planted. The resistance in NBG-SG soybean was further confirmed by testing for an already known mutation (SNP at 149th position) for YMD in the Glyma.18G025100 gene of soybean. The susceptible soybean germplasm in the field was found positive for the said mutation. Moreover, an ortholog of the CYR-1 viral resistance gene from black gram was identified in soybean as Glyma.13G194500, which has a novel deletion (28bp/90bp) in the 5`UTR of susceptible germplasm. The characterized soybean lines from this study will assist in starting soybean breeding programs for YMD resistance. This is the first study regarding screening and molecular analysis of soybean germplasm for YMD resistance.

Abstract People with severe mental illness (SMI) have a higher prevalence of obesity as compared with the general population, however, there is mixed evidence about the prevalence of underweight. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the pooled prevalence of underweight in people with SMI and its association with socio‐demographic factors; and to compare the prevalence of underweight between SMI and the general population. MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases were searched to identify observational studies assessing the prevalence of underweight in adults with SMI (schizophrenia, major depressive disorder with psychotic features, and bipolar disorders). Screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessments were performed independently by two co‐authors, with disagreements resolved by consensus. Random effect estimates for the pooled prevalence of underweight and the pooled odds of underweight in people with SMI compared with the general population were calculated. Subgroup analyses were conducted for the type of SMI, setting, antipsychotic medication, region of the world, World Bank country income classification, data collection, and sex. Forty estimates from 22 countries were included. The pooled prevalence of underweight in people with SMI was 3.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.9–5.0). People with SMI were less likely to be underweight than the general population (odds ratio [OR] 0.65; 95% CI = 0.4–1.0). The pooled prevalence of underweight in SMI in South Asia was 7.5% (95% CI = 5.8–14.1) followed by Europe and Central Asia at 5.2% (95% CI = 3.2–8.1) and North America at 1.8% (95% CI = 1.2–2.6). People with SMI have lower odds of being underweight compared to the general population. People with schizophrenia had the highest prevalence of underweight compared to other types of SMI. Japan and South Asia have the highest prevalence of underweight in people with SMI.

The study of statistical distributions in a complex variable is one of the most vibrant areas of research. The complex analogue of many distributions has been studied. This article introduces the complex analogue of Binomial distribution and Negative Binomial distribution and studies certain geometrical properties of these analogues. It comprises the study of analytic functions defined by using the complex versions of Binomial distribution and Negative Binomial distribution functions. It includes the problems of finding the lower bounds of real parts of certain ratios of partial sums to the infinite series sums for these analytic functions. Such lower bounds are determined for the said analytic functions, for their first derivatives and for the Alexander transformation of these analytic functions.

Abstract Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important annual crop known for its edible oil. Sunflower is susceptible to many fungal diseases including rusts, rotting, mildews, and leaf spots that result in low crop yield. Presently, infected leaves with leaf spot disease symptoms were collected from Jallo Park, Botanical Garden; University of the Punjab, Canal road, and Johar Town, Lahore for pathogen/s isolation and identification. The identification was executed morphologically as well as genetically by nucleotide sequencing of rDNA using Internal spacer region (ITS) and Glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) primers. Morphological characters demonstrated a rapidly growing colony on MEA reaching 5.0–5.5 cm in diameter without zonation. The mycelial growth was rough and cottony white from the front and light pink from the reverse side. Conidia were brown, verruculose, and ellipsoidal with three to five transverse septations and one longitudinal septum ranging from 15 to 30 ± 2 µm in the broadest part. Conidiophores were long, branched, septate, 70–80 × 3–4 µm in size. Based on morphological characteristics, the pathogen was identified as Pithomyces sacchari. In genetic characterization BLAST analysis of the rDNA-ITS region of the pathogen exhibited maximum (100%) homology with other P. sacchari GenBank strains. Similarly, 99% homology was found with partial glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). To confirm the pathogenicity, Koch’s pathogenicity test was performed by inoculating artificial fungal suspension in pots and plate assays. The emergence of similar disease symptoms and re-isolation of the same pathogens verified Koch’s pathogenicity postulates. Conclusively this study confirms the identification of this novel pathogen of sunflowers and necessitates the quick development of management tools.

Crop establishment is the most important phenological stage in the life cycle of crop plants which is governed by the pre-sowing quality of seed. From harvesting to sowing, a broad range of factors including genomics and prevailing environmental conditions can have marked influence on the quality of seed. These factors solely or in combination can cause a huge financial loss. However, control of all these factors for improving seed quality is a difficult task for the farmers to accomplish, however, some of the factors could be controlled. To tackle the issue, physical properties of seed are modified by the exogenous application of certain physical, chemical or biological compounds directly to the surface of a natural seed coat. Application of coatings through seed coating improves germinates phases, advances phenological events, enhances physio-morphological attributes, yield and most importantly the restoration efficacy of seed. In addition, seed coating offers an attractive option as a tool for enhancing crop establishment by propelling the challenges faced to agricultural systems and restoration of degraded systems. This review summarizes comprehensive information on various seed coating technologies and their potential role for achieving a cost-effective ecosystem by increasing food security.

Abstract Cotton is an international agricultural commodity and the main cash crop of Pakistan of which quality and quantity are subject to various whims of nature. Climate change, insect pest complex, and weeds are reducing its productivity. Here, we have developed triple gene cotton containing EPSPS gene along with two Bt toxin genes Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab using a strategy where all three genes are cloned in the same T-DNA, followed by successful cotton transformation via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. This strategy has been developed to help cotton breeders in developing new cultivars by incorporating these genes into the non-transgenic or single Bt (Cry1Ac) gene cotton background where all three genes will inherit together. The expression of all three proteins was confirmed through immunostrips and was quantified through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The spatio-temporal expression of Bt protein in different parts of triple gene NIBGE cotton plants was determined. Maximum expression was found in leaves followed by seeds and boll rinds. Insect bioassays with cotton bollworms (Helicoverpa armigera), armyworms (Spodoptera litura), and pink bollworms (Pectinophora gossypiella) showed more than 90% mortality. The best performing line (NIBGE-E2) on the basis of spatiotemporal expression, glyphosate assays, and insect mortality data, was used for event characterization by using the genome sequencing approach. The event was successfully characterized and named NIBGE 20-01. A diagnostics test based on event-specific PCR was developed and its ability to distinguish NIBGE 20-01 event from other commercial transgenic cotton events was confirmed. To confirm stable expression of all three proteins in the field conditions, homozygous transgenic lines were grown in the field and the expression was confirmed through immunostrip assays. It was found that all three genes are expressed under field conditions. To show that all three genes are inherited together upon crossing with local elite cotton lines, the F1 generation was grown under glasshouse and field conditions. The expression of all three genes was confirmed under field conditions. Our results showed that transgenic cotton with three genes cloned in the same T-DNA can express all genes and can be conveniently transferred into elite cotton lines through a single cross.

Objective: To determine the relationship between perceived stress and burden among caregivers of stroke survivors residing in Lahore city of Pakistan. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted at three health care institutes of Lahore, Pakistan from October 2021 to March 2022. The inclusion was limited to caregivers providing more than 6 hours of care per day to stroke survivors for at least one month duration after the discharge from hospital. The Zarit Caregiver burden interview and perceived stress scale were used to measure caregiver burden and perceived stress respectively. Results: Of 384 caregivers of stroke survivors, the mean age was 34.79 ± 5.80 years. Mild to moderate burden was observed in 364 (94.8%) and only 20 (5.2%) had moderate to severe burden. Similarly, moderate stress was observed in 353 (91.9%) and only 31 (8.1%) had severe stress. A significantly weak positive correlation was found between stress score and burden score (r=0.26, p-value

Because of its high cement consumption, which limits its use in concrete construction, self-compacting concrete requires a higher cement content and various admixtures. Therefore, it is prudent to explore alternative options to minimize environmental impacts while creating environmentally friendly self-compacting concrete. This study examines the use of fly ash (FA) and ultrafine slag (UFS) in self-compacting geopolymer concrete (SGC), supplemented with fayalite slag aggregates (FSA). These aggregates, in varying quantities up to 60%, were used instead of traditional sand. The rheological properties and compressive strength of SGC were investigated. The analysis revealed that the addition of FSA improved the flowability of SGC. Notably, using a combination comprising 60% FSA, the largest slump measurement of 683.5 mm was achieved. Substituting up to 20% of FSA generally improved the properties of SGC at all ages. After one year, the mixture containing 20% FSA outperformed other compositions, with a maximum compressive strength of 49.38 MPa.

Sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV) is one of the most prevalent viruses deteriorating sugarcane production. Salicylic acid (SA) plays an essential role in the defense mechanism of plants and its exogenous application has been observed to induce the resistance against biotic and abiotic stressors. In this study, we set out to investigate the mechanism by which sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV) infected sugarcane responds to SA treatment in two sugarcane cultivars, i.e., ROC22 and Xuezhe. Notably, significantly low viral populations were observed at different time points (except for 28 d in ROC22) in response to post-SA application in both cultivars as compared to control based on qPCR data. Furthermore, the lowest number of population size in Xuezhe (20 copies/µL) and ROC22 (95 copies/µL) was observed in response to 1 mM exogenous SA application. A total of 2999 DEGs were identified, of which 731 and 2268 DEGs were up- and down-regulated, respectively. Moreover, a total of 806 DEGs were annotated to GO enrichment categories: 348 biological processes, 280 molecular functions, and 178 cellular components. GO functional categorization revealed that DEGs were mainly enriched in metabolic processes, extracellular regions, and glucosyltransferase activity, while KEGG annotation revealed that DEGs were mainly concentrated in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and plant-pathogen interaction suggesting the involvement of these pathways in SA-induced disease resistance of sugarcane in response to SrMV infection. The RNA-seq dataset and qRT-PCR assay showed that the transcript levels of PR1a, PR1b, PR1c, NPR1a, NPR1b, PAL, ICS, and ABA were significantly up-regulated in response to SA treatment under SrMV infection, indicating their positive involvement in stress endorsement. Overall, this research characterized sugarcane transcriptome during SrMV infection and shed light on further interaction of plant-pathogen under exogenous application of SA treatment.

Background: Perceptions of exercise benefits and barriers in medical and non- medical students needs to be explored as it is expected that medical students have more awareness regarding physical activities. Objective: To compare the perception of exercise benefits and barriers among medical and non-medical students. Methodology: This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in 6 months from November 2020 to April 2020, on sample of n=289 regular male and female students in the age range of 19-27 years. The data of final year medical students was collected from Azra Naheed Medical College and nonmedical students from Superior University, Lahore Through on probability convenient sampling technique. The perception of exercise benefits and barriers was assessed using the exercise benefit/barrier scale (EBBS). The data was carried out by an online Google form due to the pandemic situation. The independent sample t-test was used to estimate of difference among both groups. Results: The mean age of the participants was 23.75±2.11 years. A total of n=164(56.74%) were males and n=125 (43.25%) were females. The result of independent t-test showed no significant difference between medical and non-medical students regarding exercise benefit (91.2±11.66 ver. 91.09±12.83, p=0.93) and barriers (34.97±7.22 ver. 35.27±7.62, p=0.72) as well in total score of EBBS (126.23±14.450 ver. 125.81±16.390, p=0.810).Conclusion: It is concluded that medical and non-medical final year students are equally aware about exercise benefits and barriers.

Abstract We examine the evolution of cavities within spherically symmetric cluster of stars in high curvature gravity. For this purpose, we use f(R) gravity through the Starobinsky model to incorporate dark matter effects in the discussion. In particular, we check the physical significance of the f(R) model by associating it with the observational data of stellar object 4U182030. For evolution of the cavity, we consider the purely areal evolutionary phase by assuming that the proper distance (in a radial direction) among neighboring stars remains constant. The analytical solutions are obtained among which a few solutions fulfill the Darmois conditions. It is found that the evolution of the cavity in a cluster of stars is highly controlled by the influence of dark matter.

Abstract Teak being an iconic timber species the studies on its physiological and biochemical traits are very limited in India and worldwide. As a result, the current study aimed to assess biochemical parameters such as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, chlorophyll ab ratio, proline content, and peroxidase activity, along with physiological parameters such as Chlorophyll stability index, relative water content, and leaf area, as well as ecophysiological traits such as net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (Tr), Leaf temperature, intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), instantaneous water use efficiency and intrinsic carboxylation efficiency of thirty teak seed sources collected from different states of India. FCRITK 19, FCRITK 21, FCRITK 25, FCRITK 29, and FCRITK 05 were reported to have a greater photosynthetic rate (> 17 µmol m−2 s−1) coupled with a relative water content of more than 50% and a chlorophyll stability index of more than 60%, which could be used in a future genetic improvement programme. Correlation analysis indicated that water use efficiency was found to be strongly but negatively correlated with transpiration rate (−0.601) and stomatal conductance (−0.910). The proline content had a substantial positive correlation with the chlorophyll stability index (0.890), signifying that they are associated with abiotic stress conditions. Cluster analysis was attempted to discriminate the sources based on biochemical, physiological and ecophysiological traits. Eleven sources (FCRITK 25, FCRITK 27, FCRITK 29, FCRITK 14, FCRITK 30, FCRITK 16, FCRITK 05, FCRITK 13, FCRITK 02, FCRITK 17 and FCRITK 15) exhibited superior performance compared to rest of the sources.

Future wireless communication infrastructure will rely on terahertz systems that can support an increasing demand for large-bandwidth, ultra-fast wireless data transfer. In order to satisfy this demand, compact, low-power, and low noise sources of terahertz radiation are being developed. A promising route to achieving this goal is combining photonic-integrated optical frequency combs with fast photodiodes for difference frequency generation in the THz. Here, we demonstrate wireless communications using a 300 GHz carrier wave generated via photomixing of two optical tones originating from diode lasers that are injection locked to a dissipative Kerr soliton frequency microcomb. We achieve transfer rates of 80 Gbps using homodyne detection and 60 Gbps transmitting simultaneously both data and clock signals in a dual-path wireless link. This experimental demonstration paves a path toward low-noise and integrated photonic millimeter-wave transceivers for future wireless communication systems.

The composition of microbial communities and the functioning of ecosystems are greatly influenced by the nutrient inputs. Despite this fact, our knowledge regarding the impact of phosphorus (P) inputs on soil P availability and microbial community structures in subtropical acidic soils remains limited. We hypothesized that diverse P inputs, incubation temperatures, and soil types could significantly alter soil P availability and microbial communities. To address this gap, we conducted a laboratory incubation experiment, investigating the effects of biochar and inorganic P amendments on soil available P, soil pH, acid phosphatase enzymes, and bacterial abundance. We employed two different incubation temperatures (15 °C and 25 °C) using acidic paddy soil and red soil from the subtropical Southern China region. Our results indicate a notable increase in soil pH, reaching 37% and 39% at 15 °C and 40% and 40.6% at 25 °C, respectively, following the application of biochar and inorganic P amendments in paddy soil. In the case of red soil, we observed pH increases of 41% and 43% at 15 °C and 44% and 45% at 25 °C after the application of biochar and inorganic P amendment, respectively. The addition of inorganic P amendment resulted in the highest available P contents in paddy soil, reaching 111.47 mg/kg at 15 °C and 100.17 mg/kg at 25 °C, respectively. However, Proteobacteria decreased after inorganic P addition, which showed that P might not be the only limiting nutrient for various bacterial communities. Bacterial diversity and richness indices were found to be higher after biochar application in both soils. Gemmatimonadetes, Acidobacteria, and Actinobacteria were found to be strongly influenced by incubation temperatures, whereas most of the top abundant bacterial phyla, such as Gemmatimonadetes, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Firmicutes, Patescibacteria, and Bacteroidetes, were highly dependent on soil type. At the genus level, various important P solubilizing genera (Pseudomonas, Bradyrhizobium, Streptomyces jietaisiensis, Massilia) significantly increased after biochar and inorganic P addition in both soils. The correlation analysis proved that P-solubilizing genera were significantly associated with changes in soil pH, as well as soil available P after biochar and inorganic P addition. Conclusively, in a short-term incubation experiment, inorganic P amendment greatly increased the soil pH and available phosphorus contents compared to biochar and control treatments; however, the microbial community was observed to be strongly associated with biochar application, soil type, and incubation temperature.

Background: Poultry production in Pakistan is growing remarkably and contributing significantly to the economy. However, disease outbreaks are the most serious threat to poultry productivity. Among other poultry diseases which cause huge damage to poultry, parasitic diseases are also included, but no significant work has been done on this area of concern in Pakistan. Objective: This study is carried out to evaluate the prevalence rate of one of the major helminth parasite groups, Cestodes, and their effects on the health of chickens in the districts of Korangi, Karachi, Sindh. Method: Between February 2018 and January 2019, 76 chickens were examined for Cestodes infection. Cestodes were extracted from the gut and fixed in F.A.A. fixative for 24 hours with a little cover slip pressure. The cestodes were then thoroughly cleaned with 70% ethanol, stained with Mayer's carmalum, dehydrated in progressively stronger alcohol, clarified with clove oil, rinsed with xylene, and permanently mounted in Canada balsam. Results: The overall prevalence was 52.6%. Parasite burden is high in males (63.8%) compared to females (45.6%). Six species of Cestodes parasites were identified from the intestine of the infected chickens. Raillietina tetragona, R. cesticillus, R. echinobothridia, R. ransomi, Choanotaenia infundibulum, and Raillietina sp. are the Cestode species that have been found. Their prevalence was 42.1%, 34.2%, 26.3%, 22.2%, 15.7%, and 7.8%, respectively. The prevalence rate also varies from season to season. Spring had the highest rate of infection at 60%, summer was next at 58%, and autumn and winter both had a rate of 40%. Conclusion: The study concludes that heavy infestation has a negative impact on the physical health of chickens and points to the need to control Cestodes parasite infection in order to reduce mortality and increase poultry yield.

Declining freshwater resources along with their pollution are threatening the life existence on earth. To meet the freshwater demand, one of the most appropriate and possible ways which has been adopted all over the world is to reuse wastewater by removing its impurities. Among many water pollutants, natural organic matter (NOM) is found to be responsible as major precursor for the formation of other pollutants. Removal of NOM from wastewater is being done by using membrane filtration systems incorporated with certain nanofillers to increase membranes efficiency and permeability. In this study, novel nanocomposite reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were prepared using cellulose acetate and chitosan in N,N-Dimethyl formamide. Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and zinc oxide (ZnO) in different concentration were loaded to modify the membranes for tuning their RO performance. The confirmation of the functional groups is demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy which revealed the specific peaks indicating the formation of the nano-composite membranes. The surface morphology was studied by scanning electronic microscopy which shows a gradual transformation of the membrane surface from voids-free to macro-voids filled surface up to threshold concentration of GO and ZnO. The thermal properties of GO based membranes were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The uniform interaction of the GO and ZnO with polymers induced the remarkable thermal properties of the synthesized membranes. Permeate flux and contact angle measurements were considered to estimate their water content (96%) capacity and NOM rejection (96%) using 0.1 ppm humic acid solution. The permeate flux, NOM rejection and the water content changed directly with GO and inversely with ZnO wt% in the membranes up to GO5 (GO:0.14: ZnO:0.03) whereas the contact angle exhibited the inverse relationship with GO and ZnO concentration in casting solution of the synthesized membranes. Hence it can be concluded that prepared RO membranes are suitable for NOM rejection and recommended for water treatment.

ABSTRACT: Background: Older adults with COVID-19 are more likely to present with atypical symptoms, notably delirium. The main objective of this meta-analysis is to identify risk factors for delirium and outcomes of delirium in hospitalized older adults (65 years or above) with COVID-19. Methods: Comprehensive literature search of Embase, CINAHIL, Medline and Web of Science was performed for published literature until 31st August 2021. Two independent researchers evaluated study eligibility and assessed study quality using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) for cohort studies and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools for case series. The association of various predisposing factors with delirium in this cohort was reported as odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: A total of 31 studies from 11 countries were included in this review. Most of the included studies investigated patients from non-ICU settings (n = 24; 77.4%). Objective: This study aimed to assess the frequency of internet gaming addiction among undergraduate medical students of Karachi, its effect on their academic performance, and their overall health status. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in selected government and private medical colleges of Karachi from November 2021 to March 2022. Medical students, who were enrolled in year 1 to year 5 of undergraduate's health sciences programs of government and private sector of Karachi and had smartphone and internet connection for past 1 year were included in the study. Internet gaming disorder scale (IGDS-9) was used to determine the proportion of addicted medical undergraduates. Results: Out of 400 medical students, 212 (53%) students were at risk of getting addicted and 13 (3.3%) students were found to be addicted to internet gaming. Male students were found significantly higher at risk of developing internet gaming addiction and were found to be more addicted as compared to female students i.e., 202 (50.5%) vs. 198 (49.5%) (p-value < 0.001) respectively. Students who had a higher-grade point average (GPA) 230 (57.5%) were significantly lesser at risk of developing internet gaming addiction as compared to 170 (42.5%) students who had a lower GPA (p-value 0.003). Conclusion: More than half of the study population with predominant males was at risk of developing gaming addiction and they exhibited more health-related effects. Their academic grades were also affected. It is imperative to counsel this cohort for reducing the effects of internet gaming addiction. In Pakistan and globally, a large proportion of people with TB who are not receiving treatment are key populations with poor access to diagnosis and care. Transgender women and male sex workers (MSW) are heavily stigmatized and marginalized groups. While HIV rates are well documented among these key populations, little such data exists for TB. We engaged local organizations working with transgender women and MSW communities in Karachi and five urban cities in Sindh Province. People from the communities served as screening facilitators and treatment supporters. Verbal screening was followed by testing with Xpert MTB/RIF and HIV testing was offered. People with TB were supported through treatment. We screened 18,272 transgender women and 24,253 MSW. 8,921 (21.0%) individuals had presumptive TB and 7,472 (83.8%) provided sputum samples. We detected 438 (5.9%) people with positive results including 140 transgender women and 298 MSW. Including people diagnosed clinically, 625 people with TB were identified and 98.1% initiated treatment. Overall, 1.5% of people screened had TB, 1.7% among MSW and 1.1% among transgender women. Of 1,508 people tested for HIV, 243 had HIV infection (HIV+). The rates of TB among HIV+ transgender women (8.8%) were slightly lower than among MSW (10.3%). Previously, few attempts have been made to address TB in transgender women and MSW. Our work shows that these groups carry a significant burden of both TB and HIV in Pakistan and do not regularly access services. Effective interventions should include the engagement of community leaders and peers.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to inform the development of a Community Geriatrics Service (CGS) that addressed the healthcare and social needs of community dwelling older people in an Australian context. Methods Stakeholders (N = 108) took part in a ‘needs assessment’ involving 30-min semi-structured interviews with general practitioners (GPs; N = 49), and three 2-h focus groups (community engagement meetings; N = 59) with older people, informal caregivers, allied healthcare workers, and nursing home directors. Data were transcribed and thematically coded, mapped to source and weighted to the frequency that the theme was raised across sources. Results Five themes informing CGS development and delivery emerged: active health conditions (management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, falls, multimorbidity, and other relevant conditions), active social challenges (patient non-compliance, need for aged care social workers, caregiver stress, elder abuse, social isolation, and stigma), referrals (availability of specialists, communication, specialist input, and advance care directives), access (lack of transport options, and inaccessibility of local geriatrics clinics and specialists), and awareness (lack of awareness, knowledge, and resources). Conclusions The CGS will need to address access, referral processes and health system navigation, which were perceived by stakeholders as significant challenges. These findings warrant the development of a CGS with an integrated approach to aged care, pertinent for the health and social needs of the elderly.
