ECOLOGICAL disturbances , *SCIENCE databases , *WEB databases , *BIOLOGICAL monitoring , *ECOLOGICAL assessment - Abstract
Multimetric indices (MMIs) are used worldwide to assess the ecological conditions of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Different criteria and approaches are used to construct MMIs, resulting in widely different indices. Therefore, scientists, managers, and policymakers sometimes question whether such MMIs are useful for biomonitoring and bioassessment programs. Crucial design issues for biomonitoring programs include MMI responsiveness, the bioindicator group used, survey design, field sampling methods, level of taxonomic resolution, metric selection and scoring, and reference condition identification. We performed a meta-analysis on MMI development and applications worldwide to analyze the response of MMIs to different disturbance factors and to determine the degree to which MMI construction features influence their responsiveness to anthropogenic disturbances. We used the Web of Science database to find articles that applied an MMI and related MMI values to an environmental stressor, and we extracted data from 157 articles. We performed random-effects modeling to estimate the overall effect of MMI responses to disturbance and used subgroup analysis to analyze the extent to which the effect sizes varied as a function of different MMI construction features. We found that reference condition criteria had the major effect on MMI responses to disturbance. The environmental disturbance type, the number of metrics, and the ecosystem type to which MMIs were applied contributed more weakly to the effect size variance. The general response of MMIs to disturbance was little affected by the bioindicator group, taxonomic resolution, metric selection criteria, or scoring method. These findings have important implications for designing biomonitoring programs, including developing and improving cost-effective biological indices, because they could enhance MMI development and application protocols. Functional diversity is an emergent approach in ecology that has been applied globally to better understand the relationships between organisms and the environment. However, assessing the functional diversity of freshwater fish is a challenge for scientists. Aiming to summarize the evolution of scientific knowledge on fish functional diversity, we performed a systematic review of the literature published from 1945 to 2021 using the Web of Science. Based on the 101 articles reviewed, we found that publications about functional diversity of fishes have increased over time, mainly in Neotropical, Indomalayan and Palearctic regions. Most studies were conducted in lotic ecosystems, especially to assess environmental impacts such as biological invasions and land use. Functional diversity has been assessed mainly by morphological traits that reflect feeding and locomotion dimensions. Functional richness was the most common index used in the studies. Our findings suggest that political neglect and lack of investments may hamper the research development in several places. The missing information about the functional traits of many species may limit the use of the functional approach. We also highlight the need for the incorporation of functional diversity in conservation programs once functional diversity is a key facet of biodiversity to maintain freshwater ecosystem functioning.

- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

The use of multimetric indices (MMIs) to assess ecological conditions in aquatic environments has been applied globally. These indices are practical tools that incorporate various biotic metrics at different levels of biological organization. However, criticism has been directed to the use of MMIs, especially regarding the methodological criteria applied in the process such as related to metric selection and scoring and identification of reference conditions that consider all sources of ecological integrity disturbance. A review of the scientific literature was carried out to evaluate processes of creation and validation of MMIs worldwide. The criteria used by scientists to identify reference conditions, metric selection and scoring, the main metrics globally used in MMIs, and the challenges in applying these indices were verified. It was identified whether nonnative species have been considered as a source of degradation of ecological integrity in the MMIs application. The results indicated that there are no common criteria for determining reference conditions, for metric selection and scoring, which makes it difficult to compare different programs and regions, and to develop or improve future MMIs. The results showed that metrics related to species richness were most frequently used in MMIs applied worldwide, thus, it represents a consistent response pattern in the assessment of ecological conditions. The results also indicate that differentiating natural variability from anthropogenic impacts was evidenced as the major challenge in the MMIs creation and application. The review of the scientific literature indicated that biological invasions are neglected in ecological integrity assessments, as nonnative species are rarely considered as a disturbing factor in identifying reference conditions and species origin metrics are not widely used in MMIs. The results presented in this review may promote the advancement and improvement of MMIs as bioassessment tools. 92 f. : il. (algumas color.).

This paper presents a practical and easy method to identify reference sites and selection of the most significant metrics that reflect the general attributes of the assemblies, altered by human impacts. For this we evaluated the biotic integrity in some neotropical streams, located in Paraná state, Brazil, through the benthic macroinvertebrates and fish. The identification of reference sites was based on the physical and chemical quality of the habitat, and the physical and chemical variables summarized by principal component analysis, and submitted to cluster analysis to identify the reference sites. Sixteen metrics were calculated, which were submitted to a discriminant analysis to select the most significant metrics. The principal component analysis and cluster analysis showed that the reference sites were selected according to composition ande physical quality of the sediment. These sites were positively correlated with larger particles such as pebbles and negatively associated with smaller particles. The discriminant analysis showed that few metrics are sufficient to identify changes in the assemblies by human activities and that assemblies respond differently to environmental changes. In the pooled analysis of the assemblies the metrics selected for macroinvertebrate were different than metrics selected in the analysis performed solely for that assembly, in the pooled analysis were selected metrics abundance, percentage of tolerant and percentage of shredders, whereas in exclusive analysis were selected metrics richness and percentage of tolerant. Greater richness of macroinvertebrates were observed at pristine sites, while the percentage of tolerance increased with the gradient of impact. On the other hand, for the fish assemblage were selected metrics of richness, diversity and percentage of omnivores. Greatest richness were observed in moderately impacted sites, while higher values of diversity and percentage of omnivores were observed in reference sites. The analysis of the metrics of the two assemblages provided a more robust evaluation the sites categorized according to a gradient of impact, than the separate evaluation of the assemblages. However, the benthic macroinvertebrates assemblage was equally effective to confirm the reference sites.

- Abstract
The biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems in developing countries faces several limitations, especially related to gathering resources. The present study aimed at comparing the responses of fish and benthic macroinvertebrates to environmental change, to identify which group best indicates the differences between reference and impacted streams in southern Brazil. We determined reference and impacted sites based on physical and chemical variables of the water. For the analysis and comparison of biological responses, we calculated 22 metrics and submitted them to a discriminant analysis. We selected from this analysis only six metrics, which showed that the two studied assemblages respond differently to environmental change. A larger number of metrics were selected for macroinvertebrates than for fish in the separate analysis. The metrics selected for macroinvertebrates in the pooled analysis (i.e., fish and macroinvertebrates together) were different from those selected in the separate analysis for macroinvertebrates alone. However, the metrics selected for fish in the pooled analysis were the same selected in the separate analysis for fish alone. The macroinvertebrate assemblage was more effective for distinguishing reference from impacted sites. We suggest the use of macroinvertebrates as bioindicators of Neotropical streams, especially in situations in which time and money are short. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecological studies in all environments of the world the effects of non-native species in various parts of the world are discussed. Regarding the invasion of these environments, we highlight the Phylum Sanitary, especially the ecological Mollusa, for presenting numerous gastronomic classes, with many species with potential, which can lead to as many sanitary, as well as sanitary and graves, in places of invasion. Know the invasive species that are reported in their scientific distribution, in this case introduction and the main ones are reported, is of fundamental importance. Knowing the risk of introducing an invasive species, and its impacts on the invaded places, it is necessary to find ways of prevention. A precious tool of meaning is an invasion of the invasive potential of one, thus generating a risk that indicates the suitability of the habitat or probability of occurrence based on the environmental conditions of the native area and the area in which the species may become invasive. . In this way, the adequacy of the invasive Melanoides tuberculata against a native species by Biomphalaria glabra, which is also a species with potential to cause toilets, is of fundamental importance, to predict possible invasion sites, and if the species are competing for the same ecological niches. Thus, the present work is subdivided into two works that address issues such as: a systematic of scientific articles about invasive freshwater gastropods. The second work will address the modeling of the current and future potential distribution of two problematic gastropod species in South America. : il. (algumas color.).

Species are exposed to natural climate change throughout their evolutionary history. However, anomalous global warming and resulting variations in rainfall patterns affect survival, alter the distribution of organisms and the network of species interactions. The aim of this thesis was to find larger-scale (basin and biome level) patterns for the possible effects of climate change on the distribution of South American freshwater ostracods through ensemble analysis of several species-distribution modelling algorithms. Here, climate change was based on two assumptions of increasing carbon emissions, the moderate-optimistic (RCP 4.5) and pessimistic (RCP 8.5) scenarios of four climate models (AOGCMs), from 2050 and 2080. In the first approach, projections of changes in ostracod species richness and composition were presented, and conservation status of 61 species from 13 river basins in the Southern Cone. In the second approach, the geographical pattern of a symbiotic interspecific interaction of commensalism type was evaluated through the climatic suitability of Elpidium (Ostracoda) and tank bromeliads of the Atlantic Forest, and the availability of habitat for Elpidium (presence of tank bromeliads) in the future. For both approaches, climate change directly influenced the decrease in future distribution areas of ostracods. The results of the first approach showed a decrease in ostracod richness in the Southern Cone basins of South America, and different species compositions in 2050 and 2080, in both the moderate-optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. The decrease in the ranges of ostracods will change the conservation status of several species to “potentially threatened”. Elpidium ranges will be more limited in the future, and there will be less habitat availability, i.e. fewer tank bromeliad species for interaction. In general, precipitation and temperature regimes are synchronized with phenological life-history events of the species, which determine the direction of dispersal to the environmental set of optimal survival conditions in the future. Our results contribute to the inclusion of ostracods (and other invertebrates) in conservation plans for their habitats on larger geographical scales. 124 f. : il. (color.).

The success of biological invasions depends on overcoming environmental filters. After the filters are transposed and subsequently established, invasive species can reach high densities and cause impacts, such as loss of biodiversity and damage to the functioning of ecosystems. The golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) is an invasive bivalve in South America and presents high densities in invaded environments. It has a planktonic larval stage, divided into five stages, and an encrusting adult. The larval stage is considered the main propagule of the species. It is known that abiotic factors act differently on larval stages, as these present morphological and physiological differences. Some works shown the ability of L. fortunei to select groups and functional traits of phytoplankton species, but these studies are experimental and with adult representatives. Considering that larvae are the main propagule of the species, therefore, abiotic filters act primarily on them, we sought to (i) evaluate the population structure of L. fortunei larvae and its relationship with environmental factors in lotic environments in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River. In addition, considering that larvae can reach high density values, we also sought to (ii) identify the potential impacts of high larval densities on the taxonomic and functional diversity of phytoplankton, and their effects on ecosystem functioning. The results showed differences in the age pyramid between the evaluated environments, and found that most environmental filters act on the early larval stages. Among these filters, turbidity stands out. We also identified a negative effect of L. fortunei larval density on the functional and taxonomic diversity of the phytoplankton community. The effects of larval density on these facets of phytoplankton diversity resulted in indirect negative effects on the biomass stock of the community of these producers. It's expected that knowledge about the filters that control larval densities of L. fortunei can contribute to the control and management of the species, in order to avoid major impacts on the phytoplankton, and consequently, on the environment. 75 f. : il.
There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications., (© 2022 The Ecological Society of America.)
