Tunability of interfacial effects between two-dimensional (2D) crystals is crucial not only for understanding the intrinsic properties of each system, but also for designing electronic devices based on ultra-thin heterostructures. A prerequisite of such heterostructure engineering is the availability of 2D crystals with different degrees of interfacial interactions. In this work, we report a controlled epitaxial growth of monolayer TaSe2 with different structural phases, 1H and 1T, on a bilayer graphene (BLG) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy, and its impact on the electronic properties of the heterostructures using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. 1H-TaSe2 exhibits significant charge transfer and band hybridization at the interface, whereas 1T-TaSe2 shows weak interactions with the substrate. The distinct interfacial interactions are attributed to the dual effects from the differences of the work functions as well as the relative interlayer distance between TaSe2 films and BLG substrate. The method demonstrated here provides a viable route towards interface engineering in a variety of transition-metal dichalcogenides that can be applied to future nano-devices with designed electronic properties., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

When electron-electron interaction dominates over other electronic energy scales, exotic, collective phenomena often emerge out of seemingly ordinary matter. The strongly correlated phenomena, such as quantum spin liquid and unconventional superconductivity, represent a major research frontier and a constant source of inspiration. Central to strongly correlated physics is the concept of Mott insulator, from which various other correlated phases derive. The advent of two-dimensional (2D) materials brings unprecedented opportunities to the study of strongly correlated physics in the 2D limit. In particular, the enhanced correlation and extreme tunability of 2D materials enables exploring strongly correlated systems across uncharted parameter space. Here, we discover an intriguing metal to Mott insulator transition in 1T-TaSe$_2$ as the material is thinned down to atomic thicknesses. Specifically, we discover, for the first time, that the bulk metallicity of 1T-TaSe$_2$ arises from a band crossing Fermi level. Reducing the dimensionality effectively quenches the kinetic energy of the initially itinerant electrons and drives the material into a Mott insulating state. The dimensionality-driven Metal to Mott insulator transition resolves the long-standing dichotomy between metallic bulk and insulating surface of 1T-TaSe$_2$. Our results additionally establish 1T-TaSe$_2$ as an ideal variable system for exploring various strongly correlated phenomena.

The spontaneous formation of electronic orders is a crucial element for understanding complex quantum states and engineering heterostructures in two-dimensional materials. We report a novel $\sqrt{19}\times\sqrt{19}$ charge order in few-layer thick 1T-TaTe$_2$ transition metal dichalcogenide films grown by molecular beam epitaxy, which has not been realized. Our photoemission and scanning probe measurements demonstrate that monolayer 1T-TaTe$_2$ exhibits a variety of metastable charge density wave orders, including the $\sqrt{19}\times\sqrt{19}$ superstructure, which can be selectively stabilized by controlling the post-growth annealing temperature. Moreover, we find that only the $\sqrt{19}\times\sqrt{19}$ order persists in 1T-TaTe$_2$ films thicker than a monolayer, up to 8 layers. Our findings identify the previously unrealized novel electronic order in a much-studied transition metal dichalcogenide and provide a viable route to control it within the epitaxial growth process.

The interplay between electron-electron interactions and structural ordering can yield exceptionally rich correlated electronic phases. We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate bulk 1T-TaSe2 and have uncovered surprisingly diverse correlated surface states thereof. These surface states exhibit the same in-plane charge density wave ordering but dramatically different electronic ground states ranging from insulating to metallic. The insulating variety of surface state shows signatures of a decoupled surface Mott layer. The metallic surface states, on the other hand, exhibit zero-bias peaks of varying strength that suggest Kondo phases arising from coupling between the Mott surface layer and the metallic bulk of 1T-TaSe2. The surface of bulk 1T-TaSe2 thus constitutes a rare realization of the periodic Anderson model covering a wide parameter regime, thereby providing a model system for accessing different correlated phenomena in the same crystal. Our results highlight the central role played by strong correlations in this material family.

One-dimensional electron systems (1DESs) exhibit properties that are fundamentally different from higher-dimensional systems. For example, electron-electron interactions in 1DESs have been predicted to induce Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior. Naturally-occurring grain boundaries in single-layer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides provide 1D conducting channels that have been proposed to host Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, but charge density wave physics has also been suggested to explain their behavior. Clear identification of the electronic ground state of this system has been hampered by an inability to electrostatically gate such boundaries and thereby tune their charge carrier concentration. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy study of gate-tunable mirror twin boundaries (MTBs) in single-layer 1H-MoSe$_2$ devices. Gating here enables STM spectroscopy to be performed for different MTB electron densities, thus allowing precise characterization of electron-electron interaction effects. Visualization of MTB electronic structure under these conditions allows unambiguous identification of collective density wave excitations having two distinct velocities, in quantitative agreement with the spin-charge separation predicted by finite-length Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid theory., Comment: 5 figures

Deep packet inspection (DPI) has been extensively investigated in software-defined networking (SDN) as complicated attacks may intractably inject malicious payloads in the packets. Existing proprietary pattern-based or port-based third-party DPI tools can suffer from limitations in efficiently processing a large volume of data traffic. In this paper, a novel OpenFlow-enabled deep packet inspection (OFDPI) approach is proposed based on the SDN paradigm to provide adaptive and efficient packet inspection. First, OFDPI prescribes an early detection at the flow-level granularity by checking the IP addresses of each new flow via OpenFlow protocols. Then, OFDPI allows for deep packet inspection at the packet-level granularity: (i) for unencrypted packets, OFDPI extracts the features of accessible payloads, including tri-gram frequency based on Term Frequency and Inverted Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and linguistic features. These features are concatenated into a sparse matrix representation and are then applied to train a binary classifier with logistic regression rather than matching with specific pattern combinations. In order to balance the detection accuracy and performance bottleneck of the SDN controller, OFDPI introduces an adaptive packet sampling window based on the linear prediction; and (ii) for encrypted packets, OFDPI extracts notable features of packets and then trains a binary classifier with a decision tree, instead of decrypting the encrypted traffic to weaken user privacy. A prototype of OFDPI is implemented on the Ryu SDN controller and the Mininet platform. The performance and the overhead of the proposed sulotion are assessed using the real-world datasets through experiments. The numerical results indicate that OFDPI can provide a significant improvement in detection accuracy with acceptable overheads.

We derive a structure of $\mathbb{Z}[t,t^{-1}]$-module bundle from a family of Yang-Yang functions. For the fundamental representation of the complex simple Lie algebra of classical type, we give explicit wall-crossing formula and prove that the monodromy representation of the $\mathbb{Z}[t,t^{-1}]$-module bundle is equivalent to the braid group representation induced by the universal R-matrices of $U_{h}(g)$. We show that two transformations induced on the fiber by the symmetry breaking deformation and respectively the rotation of two complex parameters commute with each other.

Two-dimensional triangular-lattice antiferromagnets are predicted under some conditions to exhibit a quantum spin liquid ground state whose low-energy behavior is described by a spinon Fermi surface. Directly imaging the resulting spinons, however, is difficult due to their fractional, chargeless nature. Here we use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to image spinon density modulations arising from a spinon Fermi surface instability in single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$, a two-dimensional Mott insulator. We first demonstrate the existence of localized spins arranged on a triangular lattice in single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$ by contacting it to a metallic 1H-TaSe$_2$ layer and measuring the Kondo effect. Subsequent spectroscopic imaging of isolated, single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$ reveals long-wavelength modulations at Hubbard band energies that reflect spinon density modulations. This allows direct experimental measurement of the spinon Fermi wavevector, in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a 2D quantum spin liquid. These results establish single-layer 1T-TaSe$_2$ as a new platform for studying novel two-dimensional quantum-spin-liquid phenomena.

One of the key issues in unraveling the mystery of high Tc superconductivity in the cuprates is to understand the normal state outside the superconducting dome. Here we perform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements on a heavily overdoped, non-superconducting (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6+x cuprate. Spectroscopic imaging reveals dispersive quasiparticle interferences and the Fourier transforms uncover the evolution of momentum space topology. More interestingly, we observe nanoscale patches of static charge order with sqrt(2)*sqrt(2) periodicity. Both the dispersive quasiparticle interference and static charge order can be qualitatively explained by theoretical calculations, which reveal the unique electronic structure of strongly overdoped cuprate., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

A major obstacle in understanding the mechanism of Cooper pairing in the cuprates is the existence of various intertwined orders associated with spin, charge, and Cooper pairs. Of particular importance is the ubiquitous charge order features that have been observed in a variety of cuprates, especially in the underdoped regime of the phase diagram. To explain the origin of the charge order and its implication to the superconducting phase, many theoretical models have been proposed, such as charge stripes, electronic nematicity, and Fermi surface instability. A highly appealing physical picture is the so-called pair density wave (PDW), a periodic modulation of Cooper paring in space, which may also induce a charge order. To elucidate the existence and nature of the PDW order, here we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to investigate a severely underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{\delta}, in which superconductivity just emerges on top of a pronounced checkerboard charge order. By analyzing the spatial distribution of the spectral features characteristic of superconductivity, we observe a periodic modulation of both the superconducting coherence peak and gap depth, demonstrating the existence of a density wave order of Cooper pairing. The PDW order has the same spatial periodicity as the charge order, and the amplitudes of the two orders exhibit clear positive correlation. Mott insulating behavior is induced by strong electron correlation and can lead to exotic states of matter such as unconventional superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. Recent advances in van der Waals material synthesis enable the exploration of novel Mott systems in the two-dimensional limit. Here we report characterization of the local electronic properties of single- and few-layer 1T-TaSe2 via spatial- and momentum-resolved spectroscopy involving scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission. Our combined experimental and theoretical study indicates that electron correlation induces a robust Mott insulator state in single-layer 1T-TaSe2 that is accompanied by novel orbital texture. Inclusion of interlayer coupling weakens the insulating phase in 1T-TaSe2, as seen by strong reduction of its energy gap and quenching of its correlation-driven orbital texture in bilayer and trilayer 1T-TaSe2. Our results establish single-layer 1T-TaSe2 as a useful new platform for investigating strong correlation physics in two dimensions.

Gluons dominate the proton behavior at high energy collisions, they can be condensed at ultra high energy. The collisions of the accelerated high energy protons with interplanetary matter in cosmic rays will produce a huge number of secondary particles at the gluon condensate energy region, which break the primary power-law of cosmic rays. The above predictions seem to be consistent with the recent DAMPE data concerning the electron plus positron spectra. We report transport studies of Mn-doped Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) films with accurately controlled thickness grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We find that films thicker than 5 quintuple-layer (QL) exhibit the usual anomalous Hall effect for magnetic TIs. When the thickness is reduced to 4 QL, however, characteristic features associated with the topological Hall effect (THE) emerge. More surprisingly, the THE vanishes again when the film thickness is further reduced to 3 QL. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the coupling between the top and bottom surface states at the dimensional crossover regime stabilizes the magnetic skyrmion structure that is responsible for the THE., Comment: 4 figures, with supplementary materials, to appear in Phys.
