Spatial and temporal associations between sympatric species underpin biotic interactions, structure ecological assemblages, and sustain ecosystem functioning and stability. However, the resilience of interspecific spatiotemporal associations to human activity remains poorly understood, particularly in mountain forests where anthropogenic impacts are often pervasive. Here, we applied context-dependent Joint Species Distribution Models to a systematic camera-trap survey dataset from a global biodiversity hotspot in eastern Himalayas to understand how prominent human activities in mountain forests influence species associations within terrestrial mammal communities. We obtained 10,388 independent detections of 17 focal species (12 carnivores and five ungulates) from 322 stations over 43,163 camera days of effort. We identified a higher incidence of positive associations in habitats with higher levels of human modification (87%) and human presence (83%) compared to those located in habitats with lower human modification (64%) and human presence (65%) levels. We also detected a significant reduction of pairwise encounter time at increasing levels of human disturbance, corresponding to more frequent encounters between pairs of species. Our findings indicate that human activities can push mammals together into more frequent encounters and associations, which likely influences the coexistence and persistence of wildlife, with potential far-ranging ecological consequences.

To investigate the value of self-developed air-free laparoscopic auxiliary instruments in the clinical application of thyroid diseases. The clinical data of 70 transaxillary and 45 transareolar air-free laparoscopic surgeries for thyroid cancer and 40 conventional open surgeries were retrospectively compared. The transaxillary and transareolar laparoscopic groups had significantly longer operative times than the open group, while the postoperative satisfaction was higher in the endoscopic group than in the open group. This set of instruments has advantage of novel design, scientific structure, safe application. It can be compatible with a variety of thyroid and breast air-free laparoscopic procedures, which can promote the development and popularization of laparoscopic technology.

Abstract Background The shortage of public health personnel and the uneven distribution between urban and rural areas are thorny issues in China. Master of public health (MPH) is an integral part of public health human resources in the future, and it is of far-reaching significance to discuss their work preferences. The present study wants to investigate the job preference of MPH, understand the relative importance of different job attributes, and then put forward targeted incentive measures. Methods Discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to evaluate the job preference of MPHs in two medical colleges in Liaoning Province. Attributes include employment location, bianzhi, working environment, career development prospects, work value and monthly income. Thirty-six choice sets were developed using a fractional factorial design. Mixed logit models were used to analysis the DCE data. Results The final sample comprised 327 MPHs. All the attributes and levels included in the study are statistically significant. Monthly income is the most important factor for MPHs. For non-economic factors, they value career development prospects most, followed by the employment location. Respondents’ preferences are heterogeneous and influenced by individual characteristics. Subgroup analysis showed that respondents from different family backgrounds have different job preferences. Policy simulation suggested that respondents were most sensitive to a salary increase, and the combination of several non-economic factors can also achieve the same effect. Conclusions Economic factors and non-economic factors significantly affect the job preference of MPHs. To alleviate the shortage and uneven distribution of public health personnel, more effective policy intervention should comprehensively consider the incentive measures of the work itself and pay attention to the individual characteristics and family backgrounds of the target object.

Abstract Background Neuropsychiatric involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a common clinical manifestation. In SLE patients, cerebral function is a more sensitive predictor of central nervous system damage, and abnormalities in cerebral function may be apparent before substantial neuropsychiatric symptoms occur. The 5-hydroxynyptamine(5-HT) system has the ability to interact with the majority of the neurochemical systems in the central nervous system (CNS), influencing brain function. Serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) is an essential element of the 5-HT system gene polymorphism and is directly related to the control of 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter (5-HTT)gene expression. The relationship between 5-HTTLPR and functional brain measurements in SLE patients requires more investigation because it is one of the most attractive imaging genetics targets for shedding light on the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric lupus. Methods Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) images were collected from 51 SLE patients without obvious neuropsychiatric manifestations and 44 healthy volunteers. Regional homogeneity (ReHo), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) were selected as indicators for evaluating brain function. In accordance with the Anatomical Automatic Labeling template, the gray matter was divided into 116 regions. The mean ReHo value, mean ALFF value, and mean fALFF value of each brain region were extracted. 5-HTTLPR genotypes of all research objects were tested by polymerase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis. Two-way analysis of covariance was used to investigate whether there is an interaction effect between SLE disease status and 5-HTTLPR genotype on resting-state brain function. Results In SLE patients with S/S homozygosity, there were notably lower mean ReHo, mean ALFF, and mean fALFF values observed in the right parietal, inferior angular gyrus, and the right paracentral lobule compared to healthy controls. However, this distinction was not evident among carriers of the L allele. Within the S/S genotype, SLE patients exhibited decreased mean ReHo in the left posterior cingulate gyrus, reduced mean fALFF in the left caudate nucleus, and diminished mean ALFF in the left temporal pole: superior temporal gyrus, in contrast to the HC group. Conversely, no such differences were discerned among carriers of the L allele. Notably, among L allele carriers, SLE patients displayed a higher mean ReHo value in the right hippocampus compared to the HC group, while demonstrating a lower mean ALFF value in the left medial and paracingulate gyrus in contrast to the HC group. Conversely, these differences were not apparent among S/S homozygotes. Conclusions Brain function in the right parietal and inferior angular gyrus and the right paracentral lobule is affected by the interaction effect of SLE disease status and 5-HTTLPR genotype.

Abstract Background Early studies have shown a relationship between activities of daily living (ADL) disability and depressive symptoms in older people. However, discussions on the direction of this relationship are insufficient. The study’s objective was to assess the reciprocal relationship between ADL disability and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese people. Method Data was collected in four waves of a nationwide survey, the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which was carried out in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018. In total, this study included 4,124 participants aged ≥ 45 years at baseline. A summing score of the eleven items for basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) was calculated to indicate the degree of ADL disability. The 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) was adopted to measure depressive symptoms. The reciprocal relationship between ADL disability and depressive symptoms was tested by cross-lagged models. Result At baseline, 911 (22.1%) participants were classified as having difficulties with ADL, and the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 34.4% (1,418). Among middle-aged and older people in China, there was a significant reciprocal and longitudinal relationship between ADL disability and depressive symptoms. People who had difficulty with ADL faced a higher risk of depressive symptoms, and those who suffered from depressive symptoms were accompanied by an increase in ADL disability in the following years. The subgroup analysis on age also showed that ADL disability was reciprocally and longitudinally related to depressive symptoms. However, only women showed similar results in the subgroup analysis on gender. Conclusion This study shows that ADL disability is bi-directionally related to depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese people over time. The results suggest we should identify ADL disability and bad psychological conditions in time to prevent subsequent mutual damage among middle-aged and older Chinese people, a vulnerable group rising in the future.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) possess unique magnetism and good biocompatibility, and they have been widely applied as contrast agents (CAs) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Traditional CAs typically show a fixed enhanced signal, thus exhibiting the limitations of low sensitivity and a lack of specificity. Nowadays, the progress of stimulus-responsive IONPs allows alteration of the relaxation signal in response to internal stimuli of the tumor, or external stimuli, thus providing an opportunity to overcome those limitations. This review summarizes the current status of smart IONPs as tumor imaging MRI CAs that exhibit responsiveness to endogenous stimuli, such as pH, hypoxia, glutathione, and enzymes, or exogenous stimuli, such as magnets, light, and so on. We discuss the challenges and future opportunities for IONPs as MRI CAs and comprehensively illustrate the applications of these stimuli-responsive IONPs. This review will help provide guidance for designing IONPs as MRI CAs and further promote the reasonable design of magnetic nanoparticles and achieve early and accurate tumor detection.

Abstract Background Non-neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (non-NPSLE) has been confirmed to have subtle changes in brain structure before the appearance of obvious neuropsychiatric symptoms. Previous literature mainly focuses on brain structure loss in non-NPSLE; however, the results are heterogeneous, and the impact of structural changes on the topological structure of patients’ brain networks remains to be determined. In this study, we combined neuroimaging and network analysis methods to evaluate the changes in cortical thickness and its structural covariance networks (SCNs) in patients with non-NPSLE. Methods We compare the cortical thickness of non-NPSLE patients (N=108) and healthy controls (HCs, N=88) using both surface-based morphometry (SBM) and regions of interest (ROI) methods, respectively. After that, we analyzed the correlation between the abnormal cortical thickness results found in the ROI method and a series of clinical features. Finally, we constructed the SCNs of two groups using the regional cortical thickness and analyzed the abnormal SCNs of non-NPSLE. Results By SBM method, we found that cortical thickness of 34 clusters in the non-NPSLE group was thinner than that in the HC group. ROI method based on Destrieux atlas showed that cortical thickness of 57 regions in the non-NPSLE group was thinner than that in the HC group and related to the course of disease, autoantibodies, the cumulative amount of immunosuppressive agents, and cognitive psychological scale. In the SCN analysis, the cortical thickness SCNs of the non-NPSLE group did not follow the small-world attribute at a few densities, and the global clustering coefficient appeared to increase. The area under the curve analysis showed that there were significant differences between the two groups in clustering coefficient, degree, betweenness, and local efficiency. There are a total of seven hubs for non-NPSLE, and five hubs in HCs, the two groups do not share a common hub distribution. Conclusion Extensive and obvious reduction in cortical thickness and abnormal topological organization of SCNs are observed in non-NPSLE patients. The observed abnormalities may not only be the realization of brain damage caused by the disease, but also the contribution of the compensatory changes within the nervous system.

In this paper, we consider the two dimensional incompressible anisotropic magneto-micropolar fluid equations with partial mixed velocity dissipations, magnetic diffusion and horizontal vortex viscosity, and analyze the stability near a background magnetic field. At present, major works on the equations of magneto-micropolar fluid mainly focus on the global regularity of the solutions. While the stability of the solutions remains an open problem. This paper concentrates on establishing the stability for the linear and nonlinear system respectively. Two goals have been achieved. The first is to obtain the explicit decay rates for the solution of the linear system in $ H^s({\mathbb{R}}^2) $ Sobolev space. The second assesses the nonlinear stability by establishing the a priori estimate and employing bootstrapping arguments. Our results reveal that any perturbations near a background magnetic field is globally stable in Sobolev space $ H^2({\mathbb{R}}^2) $.

Abstract The two key problems of the in‐band ripples and out‐of‐band suppression are proposed in the design of the SAW yarn tension sensor and the methods of decreasing them are achieved. The unbalanced split‐electrode interdigital transducers (IDT) are designed so that the total phase of the regenerated reflection wave and mass load feedback is close to 180°, leading to an effective reduction of the in‐band ripples effect characterised by the sensor frequency response. The engraved bi‐directional slots on the back of the substrate can block the propagation path of the bulk acoustic wave (BAW) to a certain extent, reducing the influence of BAW propagation and suppressing the out‐of‐band suppression of the frequency response. The experimental results show that the SAW yarn tension sensor with the unbalanced split‐electrode IDT can reduce the in‐band ripples from 23.34 to 0.93 dB, and the engraved bi‐directional slots can suppress the out‐of‐band suppression from 28.03 to 7.71 dB.

The mechanical properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) in service in cold regions can be significantly degraded by periodic freezing and thawing. In this work, the damage degree of freeze–thaw of ECC was systematically assessed by using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique. In addition, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Relaxometry measurements were also performed to obtain pore structure parameters, and the uniaxial tensile tests were also carried out to analyse the tensile performance after freeze–thaw cycles. From the acquired results, it was demonstrated that the EIS behaviour of ECC varied with the freeze–thaw cycles. The diameter of the Nyquist curve in high-frequency was gradually reduced by increasing the freeze–thaw cycles. Furthermore, the volume resistance of ECC after freeze–thaw gradually decreased with the increase in the number of freeze–thaw cycles. The simplified microstructure and conductive paths were used to describe the freeze–thaw damage mechanism of ECC. An equivalent circuit model of ECC exposed to freeze–thaw cycles was proposed, and the parameters of the equivalent circuit model were thoroughly analysed. The experimental findings clearly indicate that the EIS method is an appropriate technique for evaluating the damage degree of freeze–thaw of ECC.

In this study, we investigated the effect of partially substituting inorganic nitrogen with bio-organic fertiliser on the ‘Tianhong2’ Fuji apple planting in Xinjiang. Bio-organic fertiliser was applied, and nitrogen was reduced by 20% (T2), 40% (T3), and 60% (T4) during the blooming and fruit expansion periods with conventionally fertilised fields used as control (T1); soil nutrient, soil enzyme activity, leaf nutrients, fruit quality, and yield were measured. The total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), total calcium (TCa), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), and soil organic matter (SOM) contents, as well as the soil catalase (S-CAT), soil uretrase (S-UE), soil saccharase (S-SC), and soil nitrate reductase (S-NR) activities, significantly increased in the experimental soils compared with those in T1. In addition, TP, TCa, and total magnesium (TMg) content in apples significantly increased. Compared to T1, the T2 and T3 treatments significantly improved the fruit yield and quality, increasing the sugar–acid ratio, soluble protein, soluble sugar, peel carotenoid, and anthocyanin content and reducing peel chlorophyll content. The brightness (L*), red–green axis (a*), yellow–blue axis (b*), colour intensity (C), and tone (h°) values changed. The yield per hectare and nitrogen fertiliser partial productivity values were significantly increased. Overall, the T2 treatment resulted in the best outcome for the Yili area. In conclusion, partially substituting inorganic nitrogen with bio-organic fertiliser can effectively increase soil and leaf nutrient content and improve fruit yield and quality.

Neuronal apoptosis is a major pathological process associated with neurological dysfunction in neonates after hypoxic–ischemic brain damage (HIBD). Our previous study demonstrated that oxymatrine (OMT) exerts potential neuroprotective effects on neonatal rats subjected to hypoxic–ischemic insult. However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of OMT-mediated neuroprotection on neonatal HIBD by attempting to determine its effect on the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and explored the underlying mechanism. Both 7-day-old rat pups and primary hippocampus neurons were used to establish the HIBD and oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) injury models, respectively. Our results demonstrated that OMT treatment significantly increased cerebral blood flow and reduced S100B concentration, infarct volume, and neuronal apoptosis in neonatal rats. In vitro, OMT markedly increased cell viability and MMP level and decreased DNA damage. Moreover, OMT improved the mRNA and protein levels of Wnt1 and β-catenin, inhibited the expression of DKK1 and GSK-3β, enhanced the nuclear transfer of β-catenin, and promoted the binding activity of β-catenin with Tcf-4; however, it downregulated the expression of cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-9. Notably, the introduction of XAV-939 (a Wnt/β-catenin signaling inhibitor) reversed the positive effects of OMT both in vivo and in vitro. Collectively, our findings demonstrated that OMT exerted a neuroprotective effect on neonatal HIBD by inhibiting neuronal apoptosis, which was partly via the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) sensors have been one of the excellent candidates for magnetic field detection due to their high sensitivity and compact size. In this paper, we design a magnetometer with in situ magnetic feedback consisting of an MTJ sensor. To analyze and evaluate the detectivity of the MTJ magnetometer, a noise model of the MTJ sensor in the magnetometer without magnetic feedback is first developed. Then, the noise model of the MTJ magnetometer with in situ magnetic feedback is also established, including the noises of the MTJ sensor and the signal conditioning circuit, as well as the feedback circuit. The equivalent noise model of the MTJ magnetometer with in situ magnetic feedback is evaluated through nonlinear fitting for the noise voltage spectrum. Although the noise generated by the MTJ sensor is much greater than that of the signal conditioning circuit, the noise introduced by the feedback coils into the MTJ sensor is slightly more than twice that generated by the MTJ sensor itself. The measurement results show that the detectivity of the MTJ magnetometer with in situ magnetic feedback reaches 526 pT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz. The equivalent noise analysis method presented in this paper is suitable for the detectivity analysis of magnetometers with magnetic feedback.

Objective Fatigue is a common problem among nurses, and patient/visitor incivility is thought to lead to nurses’ fatigue. However, the mechanism by which patient/visitor incivility leads to nurses’ fatigue has not been well studied. The aim of this study is to examine whether the association between patient/visitor incivility and fatigue among Chinese nurses is mediated by emotional labour strategy.Design A cross-sectional study.Methods In November 2019, a stratified cluster sample of 1207 nurses from two hospitals in China was used to collect data on fatigue, patient/visitor incivility and emotional labour strategy through online questionnaires. Emotional labour strategy has three dimensions: surface acting (SA), deep acting and natural acting. Complete responses were provided by 1036 (85.8%) participants. The types and contents of organic acids in wine grapes determine wine quality. To explore the effects of different rootstocks on the acid metabolism of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes, various perennial rootstock–scion combinations were used as experimental materials. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to determine citric acid, tartaric acid, and malic acid contents during fruit development. Succinic acid and oxalic acid contents and the activity of related enzymes were measured using spectrophotometry. The expression levels of related genes were measured using a real-time fluorescence quantitative method. The results showed that all four rootstock types significantly reduced oxalic acid and citric acid contents in the grapes, while increasing succinic acid content to varying degrees. Employing 110R, SO4, and Kangzhen3 rootstocks increased tartaric acid and malic acid contents. Enzyme activity analysis revealed that 110R, SO4, and Kangzhen3 rootstocks increased the NAD-MDH enzyme activity, which positively correlated with malic acid content. Simultaneously, these rootstocks reduced the NADP-ME enzyme activity level. NAD-MDH and PEPC gene expression levels were higher in ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes grafted with 110R, SO4, and Kangan3 rootstocks compared to control self-rooted seedlings. Grafting these three rootstocks enhanced malic acid accumulation in ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes.

BackgroundCognitive dysfunction (CI) is frequently reported in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but the identification and assessment of SLE-related CI remain challenging. Previous studies have focused on changes in static brain activity, and no studies have investigated the characteristics of dynamic brain activity in SLE patients with CI.ObjectsWe calculated the dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (dALFF) by combining the ALFF with a sliding window method to assess the temporal variability of brain functional activity in SLE patients with and without CI.MethodsThirty-eight SLE with CI, thirty-eight SLE without CI, and thirty-eight healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. By comparing static ALFF (sALFF) and dALFF among the three groups, changes in brain activity intensity and its temporal variability were assessed in patients with SLE with or without CI. Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated between the brain function indicator and Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) scores of SLE with CI.ResultsSubjects among the three groups exhibited significant sALFF differences in the right parahippocampal gyrus, left caudate nucleus, right putamen, and left cuneus. Compared to the SLE without CI, the right parahippocampal gyrus exhibited higher sALFF in the SLE with CI group. Compared to the HCs, the left caudate nucleus exhibited increased sALFF in the SLE with CI group. Participants in the three groups exhibited significant dALFF variability in the right parahippocampal gyrus, right lingual gyrus, and bilateral inferior occipital gyrus. Compared to the HCs, the right lingual gyrus exhibited reduced dALFF in the SLE without CI group. Compared to the HCs, the right parahippocampal gyrus exhibited increased dALFF, left calcarine fissure, and the surrounding cortex exhibited reduced dALFF in the SLE with CI group. There was no significant correlation between the MMSE score, sALFF, and dALFF in the SLE with CI group.ConclusionSLE patients with CI have abnormal brain activity intensity and stability. By analyzing the dynamics of intrinsic brain activity, it provides a new idea for evaluating SLE-related CI. However, more research and validation with multiple metrics are needed to determine the link between the severity of cognitive impairment (CI) and brain activity in patients with SLE.

Abstract Background Reduction in elevated serum cholesterol concentrations is important in the management of individuals at risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), such as myocardial infarction and thrombotic stroke. Although HMGCoA reductase inhibitors (“statins”) are frequently used for this purpose, a significant proportion of patients remain at increased residual risk of ASCVD as they do not adequately address some of the associated co-morbidities such as diabetes and fatty liver disease. Methods A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, dose ranging study was carried out that compared three doses of berberine ursodeoxycholate (BUDCA) to placebo in a cohort of subjects with a history of hypercholesterolemia and serum LDL cholesterol levels above 2.59 mmol/L (> 99.9 mg/dL). BUDCA was administered in two divided doses each day for 28 days. The primary endpoints of the study were safety and tolerability of this new compound, as well as its effect in lowering serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations. Results A total of 50 subjects were enrolled into three dose cohorts in this study. BUDCA was generally well tolerated, even at doses of 2000 mg per day (the highest dose group); there were no significant adverse effects reported and this highest dose was associated with significant reductions in LDL cholesterol. By day 28 and with the highest dose of BUDCA, there were significant reductions in the serum concentrations of total cholesterol by 8.2% (P = 0.0004) and LDL cholesterol by 10.4% (P = 0.0006), but no significant changes in triglyceride and HDL cholesterol concentrations. Conclusions BUDCA is a new single molecular entity that has a significant but modest effect in safely lowering serum LDL-cholesterol concentrations in individuals with a history of hypercholesterolemia. It has a potential use for treating hypercholesterolemia in individuals who cannot take statins, and possibly as adjunctive to other agents, such as ezetimibe or bempedoic acid. Trial registration The study was registered on Clinicaltrials.gov ( NCT03381287 ).

Long non-coding RNA (LncRNA) emerges as a regulator in various diseases, including endometriosis (EM). This study aims to uncover the role of long non-coding RNA BRAF-activated non-protein coding RNA (lncRNA BANCR)-mediated competing endogenous RNA mechanism in endometrial stromal cell (ESC) proliferation and invasion in EM by regulating miR-15a-5p/TRIM59. ESCs were isolated from eutopic and ectopic endometrial tissues, followed by the determination of Cytokeratin 19 and Vimentin expressions in cells. Then, expressions of lncRNA BANCR, microRNA (miR)-15a-5p, and tripartite motif-containing 59 (TRIM59) in tissues and cells were determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction or Western blot assay, and cell proliferation and invasion were evaluated by cell counting kit-8 and transwell assays. After that, the subcellular localization of lncRNA BANCR and binding of miR-15a-5p to lncRNA BANCR or TRIM59 were analyzed. LncRNA BANCR was upregulated in ectopic endometrial tissues and ectopic ESCs (Ect-ESCs). Silencing lncRNA BANCR suppressed Ect-ESC proliferation and invasion. LncRNA BANCR inhibited miR-15a-5p to promote TRIM59 expression. miR-15a-5p downregulation or TRIM59 overexpression both reversed the effects of silencing lncRNA BANCR on Ect-ESC proliferation and invasion. In summary, our findings suggested that lncRNA BANCR facilitated Ect-ESC proliferation and invasion by inhibiting miR-15a-5p and promoting TRIM59.

Effective and safe contrast agents for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are quite desirable for realizing high diagnostic accuracy and low toxicity in the clinic. Herein, we synthesize a series of silica-coated bismuth sulfide core-shell nanomaterials (Bi2S3@SiO2) of various sizes and systematically study their GI CT contrast performance and potential toxic effects in comparison with those of barium sulfate (BaSO4) in mice. The in vivo experimental results suggest that these Bi2S3@SiO2 core-shell nanomaterials display superior CT contrast performance and higher elimination efficacy than BaSO4 by single-dose exposure manner (10 ​mg/kg Bi element/b.w. for Bi2S3@SiO2 versus 30 ​mg/kg Ba element/b.w. for BaSO4). Furthermore, 28 days after exposure, Bi2S3@SiO2 core-shell nanomaterials show minimal toxic effects in vivo and nonsignificant influences on the structure and function of the gut microbiota in mice. This demonstrates that no adverse effects on the gut homeostasis are induced by Bi2S3@SiO2 core-shell nanomaterials and, thus, suggests that they can act as excellent and safe CT contrast agents for GI tract imaging.

In this study, we investigated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pollination of ‘Kuerle Xiangli’, and screened the pollination operation parameters to determine the precise parameters needed for the implementation of a ‘Kuerle Xiangli’ UAV pollination operation. Different flight height gradients, nozzle atomization particle sizes, spraying volume, and flight routes were tested and their effects on the droplets deposited were compared. UAV operation parameters were screened and field operations were conducted, comparing the fruit set rate, cost, and efficiency of different pollination methods of ‘Kuerle Xiangli’. The results show that the mist droplet effect of 1 m above the top of the tree is higher compared with that of 2 m and 3 m. The mist droplet effect of 2 L/667 m2 is better compared with that of 1.5 L/667 m2 and 1 L/667 m2. The mist droplet effect of 120 μm nozzle atomization particle size is better than that of 110 μm, 135 μm, and 150 μm. The mist droplet effect of flying above the canopy is better than that of flying between the rows of the canopy. The inflorescence and flower fruiting rates of ‘Kuerle Xiangli’ are 63.27% and 28.84%, respectively, and the inflorescence fruiting rate is not significantly different from hand and liquid sprayer pollination. The UAV pollination saves 12.69 USD/667 m2 and 3.32 USD/667 m2 compared with hand and liquid spray pollination, respectively. The efficiency of UAV pollination is greater than that of liquid and hand pollination. The best combination of parameters for pollination using a quadrotor UAV is 1 m from the top of the tree, 2 L/667 m2 spray volume, 120 μm spray nozzle particle size, and the flight path above the canopy. The cost of UAV pollination is 11.83 USD/667 m2 and the pollination efficiency 2.67 hm2/unit·h.

Market surveillance showed continuing circulation of avian influenza A(H5N6) virus in live poultry markets in Guangdong Province in 2017, despite compulsory vaccination for avian influenza A(H5Nx) and A(H7N9). We analyzed H5N6 viruses from 2014–2018 from Guangdong Province, revealing antigenic drift and decreased antibody response against the vaccine strain in vaccinated chickens.

Abstract Background Nose-to-brain transport of airborne ultrafine particles (UFPs) via the olfactory pathway has been verified as a possible route for particle translocation into the brain. The exact relationship between increased airborne toxicant exposure and neurological deterioration in the human central nervous system, is still unclear. However, the nasal olfactory is undoubtedly a critical junction where the time course and toxicant dose dependency might be inferred. Method Computational fluid-particle dynamics modeling of inhaled nanoparticles (1 to 100 nm) under low to moderate breathing conditions (5 to 14 L/min – human; and 0.14 to 0.40 L/min – rat) were performed in physiologically realistic human and rat nasal airways. The simulation emphasized olfactory deposition, and variations in airflow and particle flux caused by the inter-species airway geometry differences. Empirical equations were developed to predict regional deposition rates of inhaled nanoparticles on human and rat olfactory mucosa in sedentary breathing. Considering, breathing and geometric differences, quantified correlations between human and the rat olfactory deposition dose against a variety of metrics were proposed. Results Regional deposition of nanoparticles in human and the rat olfactory was extremely low, with the highest deposition ( 3 nm), significantly higher percentage of the inhaled nanoparticles reached rat nasal olfactory than that in human (2 to 32 folds). Taking into account the physical and geometric features between human and rat, the total deposition rate (#/min) and deposition rate per unit surface area (#/min/mm2) were comparable for particles> 3 nm. The substantial increase in prevalence and emergence of antigenically divergent or highly pathogenic influenza A(H7N9) viruses during 2016–17 raises concerns about the epizootic potential of these viruses. We investigated the evolution and adaptation of H7N9 viruses by analyzing available data and newly generated virus sequences isolated in Guangdong Province, China, during 2015–2017. Phylogenetic analyses showed that circulating H7N9 viruses belong to distinct lineages with differing spatial distributions. Hemagglutination inhibition assays performed on serum samples from patients infected with these viruses identified 3 antigenic clusters for 16 strains of different virus lineages. We used ancestral sequence reconstruction to identify parallel amino acid changes on multiple separate lineages. We inferred that mutations in hemagglutinin occur primarily at sites involved in receptor recognition or antigenicity. Our results indicate that highly pathogenic strains likely emerged from viruses circulating in eastern Guangdong Province during March 2016 and are associated with a high rate of adaptive molecular evolution.

Abstract Background Epidemiological studies have suggested that elevated levels of air pollution contribute to an increased incidence or severity of asthma. Although late-onset adult asthma seems to be more attributable to environmental risk factors, limited data is available on the impact of early-life exposure to size-fractionated ambient particulate matter (PM) on asthma in adults. We aimed to determine the effect on the development and exacerbation of asthma in the adult after the mice were exposed as juveniles to three size-fractionated ambient particulates collected from Beijing. Methods The three size-fractionated ambient particulates were collected from urban Beijing in winter, heavily affected by traffic and coal-fired emissions. The typical morphological and major chemical components of the PM were characterized first. Oxidative stress and expression of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) were then examined in vitro and in the lungs of mouse pups 48 h after exposure to PM by oropharyngeal aspiration. When the exposed and control juvenile mice matured to adulthood, an antigen-induced asthma model was established and relevant bio-indices were assessed. Abstract Electrospun scaffolds with excellent mechanical properties, high specific surface area and a commendable porous network are widely used in tissue engineering. Improving the hydrophilicity and cell adhesion of hydrophobic substrates is the key point to enhance the effectiveness of electrospun scaffolds. In this study, polycaprolactone (PCL) fibrous membranes with appropriate diameter were selected and coated by mussel-inspired poly norepinephrine (pNE). And norepinephrine is a catecholamine functioning as a hormone and neurotransmitter in the human brain. The membrane with smaller diameter fibers, a relative larger specific surface area and the suitable pNE functionalization provided more suitable microenvironment for cell adhesion and proliferation both in vitro and in vivo. The regenerated muscle layer can be integrated well with fibrous membranes and surrounding tissues at the impaired site and thus the mechanical strength reached the value of native tissue. The underlying molecular mechanism is mediated via inhibiting myostatin expression by PI3K/AKT/mTOR hypertrophy pathway. The properly functionalized fibrous membranes hold the potential for repairing muscle injuries. Our current work also provides an insight for rational design and development of better tissue engineering materials for skeletal muscle regeneration.

Abstract Backgrounds Exposure to nanoparticles in the workplace is a health concern to occupational workers with increased risk of developing respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders. Based on animal inhalation study and human lung tumor risk extrapolation, current authoritative recommendations on exposure limits are either on total mass or number concentrations. Effects of particle size distribution and the implication to regional airway dosages are not elaborated. Methods Real time production of particle concentration and size distribution in the range from 5.52 to 98.2 nm were recorded in a wire-cut electrical discharge machine shop (WEDM) during a typical working day. Under the realistic exposure condition, human inhalation simulations were performed in a physiologically realistic nasal and upper airway replica. The combined experimental and numerical study is the first to establish a realistic exposure condition, and under which, detailed dose metric studies can be performed. In addition to mass concentration guided exposure limit, inhalation risks to nano-pollutant were reexamined accounting for the actual particle size distribution and deposition statistics. Detailed dosimetries of the inhaled nano-pollutants in human nasal and upper airways with respect to particle number, mass and surface area were discussed, and empirical equations were developed. Results An astonishing enhancement of human airway dosages were detected by current combined experimental and numerical study in the WEDM machine shop. Up to 33 folds in mass, 27 folds in surface area and 8 folds in number dosages were detected during working hours in comparison to the background dosimetry measured at midnight. The real time particle concentration measurement showed substantial emission of nano-pollutants by WEDM machining activity, and the combined experimental and numerical study provided extraordinary details on human inhalation dosimetry. It was found out that human inhalation dosimetry was extremely sensitive to real time particle concentration and size distribution. Averaged particle concentration over 24-h period will inevitably misrepresent the sensible information critical for realistic inhalation risk assessment. Conclusions Particle size distribution carries very important information in determining human airway dosimetry. A pure number or mass concentration recommendation on the exposure limit at workplace is insufficient. A particle size distribution, together with the deposition equations, is critical to recognize the actual exposure risks. In addition, human airway dosimetry in number, mass and surface area varies significantly. A complete inhalation risk assessment requires the knowledge of toxicity mechanisms in response to each individual metric. Further improvements in these areas are needed.

Picobirnaviruses (PBVs) are small non-enveloped bisegmented double-stranded RNA viruses found in humans, mammals, and birds. Increasing molecular epidemiology studies suggest a high sequence diversity of PBVs in numerous hosts and the environment. In this study, using 229 fecal samples from dromedary camels in Dubai, 52.8% were positive for PBVs, of which 77.7% and 41.3% were positive for genogroup I and II, respectively, and 19.0% were positive for both genotypes. Phylogenetic analysis showed high diversity among the sequences of genogroup I and II dromedary PBVs. Marked nucleotide polymorphisms were observed in 75.5% and 46.0% of genogroup I and II RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) sequences, respectively, suggesting the co-existence of multiple strains in the same specimen. Both high genetic diversity and prevalence of genogroup I and II PBV in dromedaries were observed. In fact, the prevalence of genogroup II PBV in dromedaries is the highest among all animals to date. The complete/near-complete core genomes of five genogroup I and one genogroup II dromedary PBVs and partial segment 1 and 2 of both genotypes were also sequenced. The dromedary PBV genome organizations were similar to those of other animals. Genetic reassortment and mutation are both important in the ecology and evolution of PBVs.

This study examined the mediating effects of cognitive empathy and affective empathy in the relationship between dispositional awe and prosocial behaviour in medical students, and whether perceived stress moderated this association. A total of 631 medical students from two medical tertiary institutions in Liaoning Province, China, participated in this survey. The findings revealed that (1) dispositional awe was positively associated with prosocial behaviour; (2) the positive association between dispositional awe and prosocial behaviour was partially mediated by cognitive empathy and affective empathy; (3) perceived stress significantly attenuated the association between dispositional awe and cognitive empathy, and the association between cognitive empathy and prosocial behaviour. The findings yield practical implications for the improvement strategies of prosocial behaviour among medical students and provide suggestions for future educational interventions.

In a molecular epidemiology study of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in dromedaries in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, HEV was detected in fecal samples from 3 camels. Complete genome sequencing of 2 strains showed >20% overall nucleotide difference to known HEVs. Comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses revealed a previously unrecognized HEV genotype.

Picobirnaviruses (PBVs) are mostly found in animal alimentary samples. In this study, among 576 respiratory specimens from 476 mammals and 100 chickens, genogroup I PBVs were detected in three cattle and three monkeys, and a genogroup II PBV-positive sample was collected from one cattle specimen. More than one PBV sequence type was observed in two and one genogroup I PBV-positive samples from cattle and monkeys, respectively. Twenty-four complete/near-complete segments 2 (nine from respiratory and 15 from alimentary samples) from the cattle and monkey genogroup I PBVs and one complete segment 2 from the cattle genogroup II PBV were sequenced. Similar to other studies, the cattle PBVs also showed a high diversity. In contrast, the monkey PBVs observed in this study were clustered into three distinct clades. Within each clade, all the sequences showed >99% amino acid identities. This unique phenomenon is probably due to the fact that monkeys in our locality reside in separated troops with minimal inter-troop contact.

In a molecular epidemiology study using 791 fecal samples collected from different terrestrial and marine mammals in Hong Kong, genogroup I picobirnaviruses (PBVs) were positive by RT-PCR targeting the partial RdRp gene in specimens from 5 cattle, 6 monkeys, 17 horses, 9 pigs, 1 rabbit, 1 dog and 12 California sea lions, with 11, 9, 23, 17, 1, 1 and 15 sequence types in the positive specimens from the corresponding animals, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the PBV sequences from each kind of animal were widely distributed in the whole tree with high diversity, sharing 47.4 to 89.0% nucleotide identities with other genogroup I PBV strains based on the partial RdRp gene. Nine complete segments 1 (viral loads 1.7×104 to 5.9×106/ml) and 15 segments 2 (viral loads 4.1×103 to 1.3×106/ml) of otarine PBVs from fecal samples serially collected from California sea lions were sequenced. In the two phylogenetic trees constructed using ORF2 and ORF3 of segment 1, the nine segment 1 sequences were clustered into four distinct clades (C1 to C4). In the tree constructed using RdRp gene of segment 2, the 15 segment 2 sequences were clustered into nine distinct clades (R1 to R9). In four sea lions, PBVs were detected in two different years, with the same segment 1 clade (C3) present in two consecutive years from one sea lion and different clades present in different years from three sea lions. A high diversity of PBVs was observed in a variety of terrestrial and marine mammals. Multiple sequence types with significant differences, representing multiple strains of PBV, were present in the majority of PBV-positive samples from different kinds of animals.

Serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) was reported to associate with depression in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients by our team. To explore whether 5-HTTLPR plays a role in the pathogenesis of SLE, we tested 138 SLE patients and 138 age and sex matched health controls (HCs) for 5-HTTLPR by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis. Interestingly, the results suggest that the frequencies of SS genotype and S allele in SLE patients with positive anti-Sm antibody and anti-U1RNP antibody were both significantly higher than the other genotypes and alleles. However, the frequencies of 5-HTTLPR genotypes and alleles were of no significant difference between SLE patients and HCs. This suggested that 5-HTTLPR was not a high-risk susceptible gene in SLE but might relate to SLE by affecting production of some autoantibodies, especially anti-Sm and anti-U1RNP antibody.

Depressive and anxiety disorders are frequently observed in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). However, the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. We conducted this survey to understand the prevalence of depression and anxiety in SLE patients without major neuropsychiatric manifestations (non-NPSLE) and to explore the relationship between emotional disorders, symptoms, autoantibodies, disease activity, and treatments in SLE. 176 SLE patients were included, and SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) were recorded to evaluate their disease activity and emotional status. We found that depressive and anxiety disorders were common among SLE patients: 121 (68.8%) patients were in depression status while 14 (8.0%) patients could be diagnosed with depression. Accordingly, 101 (57.4%) were in anxiety status and 21 (11.9%) could be diagnosed with anxiety. Depression was associated with disease activity, and anxiety was associated with anti-P0 antibody, while both of them were associated with proteinuria. HAMA and HAMD scores were in strong positive correlation and they were independent risk factors of each other. We concluded that the high prevalence of depression and anxiety and the association between depression and SLE disease activity might reveal the covert damage of central nervous system in SLE. The role of anti-P0 antibody in SLE patients with emotional disorders warrants more researches.

Nanomaterials (NMs) display many unique and useful physico-chemical properties. However, reliable approaches are needed for risk assessment of NMs. The present study was performed in the FP7-MARINA project, with the objective to identify and evaluate in vitro test methods for toxicity assessment in order to facilitate the development of an intelligent testing strategy (ITS). Six representative oxide NMs provided by the EC-JRC Nanomaterials Repository were tested in nine laboratories. The in vitro toxicity of NMs was evaluated in 12 cellular models representing 6 different target organs/systems (immune system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive organs, kidney and embryonic tissues). The toxicity assessment was conducted using 10 different assays for cytotoxicity, embryotoxicity, epithelial integrity, cytokine secretion and oxidative stress. Thorough physico-chemical characterization was performed for all tested NMs. Commercially relevant NMs with different physico-chemical properties were selected: two TiO2 NMs with different surface chemistry - hydrophilic (NM-103) and hydrophobic (NM-104), two forms of ZnO - uncoated (NM-110) and coated with triethoxycapryl silane (NM-111) and two SiO2 NMs produced by two different manufacturing techniques - precipitated (NM-200) and pyrogenic (NM-203). Cell specific toxicity effects of all NMs were observed; macrophages were the most sensitive cell type after short-term exposures (24-72h) (ZnO>SiO2>TiO2). Longer term exposure (7 to 21 days) significantly affected the cell barrier integrity in the presence of ZnO, but not TiO2 and SiO2, while the embryonic stem cell test (EST) classified the TiO2 NMs as potentially 'weak-embryotoxic' and ZnO and SiO2 NMs as 'non-embryotoxic'. A hazard ranking could be established for the representative NMs tested (ZnO NM-110 > ZnO NM-111 > SiO2 NM-203 > SiO2 NM-200 > TiO2 NM-104 > TiO2 NM-103). This ranking was different in the case of embryonic tissues, for which TiO2 displayed higher toxicity compared with ZnO and SiO2. Importantly, the in vitro methodology applied could identify cell- and NM-specific responses, with a low variability observed between different test assays. Overall, this testing approach, based on a battery of cellular systems and test assays, complemented by an exhaustive physico-chemical characterization of NMs, could be deployed for the development of an ITS suitable for risk assessment of NMs. This study also provides a rich source of data for modeling of NM effects.
