Abstract The organic-rich shale of the Chang 7 member is the most important source rock in the Ordos basin. The sedimentary environment and the controlling factors of organic matter enrichment, however, are still in contention. In this investigation, the Yishicun outcrop, located on the south margin of the Ordos basin, has been considered for the study. X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence (CL) were used to investigate the petrological features of the organic-rich shale. The content of volcanic ash and the diameter of pyrite framboid pseudocrystals were measured to illustrate the relationship between oxygen level, ash content and the enrichment of organic matter. It has been found that the diameter of pyrite framboid pseudocrystals has a strong correlation with the total organic carbon, demonstrating that the redox status degree of the water column has a positive impact on the enrichment of organic matter. Additionally, with an increase in the ash content, the content of organic matter increased at first and then decreased, and reached a maximum when the ash content was about 6%, illustrating that the ash input has a double effect on the enrichment of organic matter.

Abstract The Ordos Basin is the largest petroliferous basin in China, where the Chang 7 Member shale serves as the major source rock in the basin, with an area of more than 100,000 km2. So far, sedimentary and geochemical characterizations have rarely been conducted on the shale in shallow ( 10%) contains mainly sapropelite and liptinite, with Type II kerogen. It is generally characterized by a hydrocarbon potential of more than 70 mg/g, low maturity, and shallow–semideep lacustrine facies. In the western sections, the shale, still in a low maturity stage, has a higher hydrocarbon potential and is optional for shale oil recovery. However, the Chang 7 Member shale in the study area is highly heterogeneous and its shale oil recovery is practical only in the organic-rich intervals.

Plasma cladding was used to prepare a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) coating under different conditions. The process parameters were optimized using an orthogonal experiment design based on surface morphology quality characteristics, dilution rate, and hardness. The optimal process parameters were determined through range and variance analysis to be a cladding current of 70 A, a cladding speed of 7 cm⋅min-1, and a powder gas flow rate of 8 L⋅s-1. During the optimized experiments, both the cladded and annealed CoCrFeMnNi HEA coatings exhibit some pores, micro-voids, and a small amount of aggregation. However, the aggregation in the annealed coating is more dispersed than that in the cladded coating. The cladded CoCrFeMnNi HEA coating consists of simple FCC phases, while a new Cr-rich phase precipitates from the FCC matrix after annealing the coating at a temperature range of 550 °C-950 °C. After annealing at 850 °C, the proportion of the FCC phase decreases compared to the cladded coating, and the number of large-angle grain boundaries is significantly reduced. However, the proportion of grains with sizes below 50 µm increases from 61.7% to 74.3%. The micro-hardness and wear resistance of the cladded coating initially increases but then decreases with an increase in annealing temperature, indicating that appropriate annealing can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the CoCrFeMnNi HEA coatings by plasma cladding. The micro-hardness of the CoCrFeMnNi HEA coatings after annealing at 650 °C increases to 274.82 HV0.2, while the friction coefficient decreases to below 0.595. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Saccharum species such as sugarcane and energy cane are key players in the expanding bioeconomy for sugars, bioenergy, and production of high-value proteins. Genomic tools such as culm-regulated promoters would be of great value in terms of improving biomass characteristics through enhanced carbon metabolism for sugar accumulation and/or fiber content for biofuel feedstock. Unlike the situation in dicots, monocot promoters currently used are limited and mostly derived from highly expressed constitutive plant genes and viruses. In this study, a novel promoter region of Sugarcane bacilliform virus (SCBV; genus Badnavirus, family Caulimoviridae), SCBV21 was cloned and mapped by deletion analysis and functionally characterized transiently in monocot and dicot species and stably in sugarcane. Results In silico analysis of SCBV21 [1816 base pair (bp)] identified two putative promoter regions (PPR1 and PPR2) with transcription start sites (TSS1 and TSS2) and two TATA-boxes (TATAAAT and ATATAA), and several vascular-specific and regulatory elements. Deletion analysis revealed that the 710 bp region spanning PPR2 (with TSS2 and ATATAA) at the 3′ end of SCBV21 retained the full promoter activity in both dicots and monocots, as shown by transient expression of the enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (EYFP) gene. In sugarcane young leaf segments, SCBV21 directed a 1.8- and 2.4-fold higher transient EYFP expression than the common maize ubiquitin 1 (Ubi1) and Cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoters, respectively. In transgenic sugarcane, SCBV21 conferred a preferential expression of the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene in leaves and culms and specifically in the culm storage parenchyma surrounding the vascular bundle and in vascular phloem cells. Among the transgenic events and tissues characterized in this study, the SCBV21 promoter frequently produced higher GUS activity than the Ubi1 or 35S promoters in a manner that was not obviously correlated with the transgene copy number. Conclusions The newly developed plant viral SCBV21 promoter is distinct from the few existing SCBV promoters in its sequence and expression pattern. The potential of SCBV21 as a tissue-regulated promoter with a strong activity in the culm vascular bundle and its storage parenchyma makes it useful in sugarcane engineering for improved carbon metabolism, increased bioenergy production, and enhanced stress tolerance.

Occurrence and mobility of shale oil are prerequisites for evaluating shale oil reserves and prioritizing exploration targets, particularly for heterogeneous lacustrine shales. The Qingshankou Formation in the Gulong Sag, Songliao Basin is a classic lacustrine pure shale reservoir that contains abundant shale oil resources. The predicted geological reserves of the shale are 1.268 × 109 t. In this study, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), the modular automated processing system (MAPS), pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC), low-pressure nitrogen gas adsorption (LPNA), Soxhlet extraction, pyrolysis, and 2-D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were integrated to describe the shale oil components, microscopic occurrence, mobility, and the effective pore size distribution. Meanwhile, the related controlling factors are discussed.The shale oil in the Qingshankou Fm exists dominantly in the matrix pores of the clay minerals, with small amounts distributed in the intergranular pores of terrigenous clastic grains, intercrystalline pores of pyrite, intragranular pores of ostracod shells, and micro-fractures. Shale oil is distributed in the pore spaces of variable sizes in different lithofacies. The clay mineral-laminated shales are characterized by the broadest range of pore size and largest volume of pore spaces with shale oil distribution, while the ostracod-laminated shales have limited pore spaces retaining oil. Furthermore, the proposed integrated analysis evaluates the shale oil molecules existing in two states: movable, and adsorbed oil, respectively. The result illustrates that movable oil takes up 30.6%–79.4% of the total residual oil. TOC, mineral composition, and pore structures of the shale joint together to control the states and mobility of the shale oil. TOC values are positively correlated with the quantities of shale oil regardless of the state of oil. The mineral components significantly impact the state of shale oil. Noticeable differences in the states of oil were observed following the changing types of minerals, possibly due to their difference in adsorption capacity and wettability. Clay minerals attract more adsorbed oil than movable oil. Felsic minerals generally decrease the occurrence of total and adsorbed oil. Carbonate plays a positive role in hydrocarbon retention of all the shale oil states. As for the pore structure, the average pore size exerts a critical impact on the total, movable, and adsorbed oil content. The total pore volume and specific surface area of shales play a principal role in controlling the total yields and amounts of adsorbed oil. This research improves the understanding of the occurrence characteristics and enrichment mechanisms of shale oil in terrestrial pure shales and provides a reference for locating favorable shale oil exploration areas. Based on the controlling of diagenesis and diagenetic facies on reservoir development, this article discusses the formation, classification, and evaluation of diagenetic facies and its application and significance in petroleum exploration. For constructive diagenetic facies such as clastic rock, carbonate rock, and igneous rock, eight kinds of genetic mechanisms are developed, including dissolution of organic acid, dolomitization, and so on. Nine constructive diagenetic facies and seven destructive diagenetic facies are classified. A naming scheme for diagenetic facies is proposed reflecting lithology, diagenesis, porosity, and permeability, that is, “porosity and permeability level + rock type + diagenesis type”. Diagenetic facies are evaluated synthetically and quantitatively on the basis of sedimentary facies, log facies, seismic facies, rock cores, and thin sections, and “four steps” and “superposition of three charts” are put forward as the methods of evaluation and mapping. Favored reservoirs, “sweet spots”, and lithostratigraphic traps can be predicted according to the distribution of different types of diagenetic facies. The development of the study on diagenetic facies is also discussed in the article. Volcanic hydrocarbon exploration in China has experienced three phases: accidental discovery, local prospecting, and all-round exploration. There are mainly Carboniferous-Permian, Jurassic-Cretaceous, Paleogene-Neogene volcanic rocks and lava, pyroclastics, and karst reservoirs in the oil- and gas-bearing basins in China. Volcanic rocks cannot generate organic hydrocarbons, and the combination of volcanic rocks, source rocks, and seals are the key controlling factor of the primary lava plays. The near-source play is most favorable for hydrocarbon accumulation. Distribution of oil and gas is controlled predominantly by the hydrocarbon generating center. The play requires communication with faults or unconformities. Near-source plays are in the faulted basins in eastern China. Structural-lithologic hydrocarbon reservoirs are formed in the higher place of faults and lithologic hydrocarbon reservoirs are formed on the slope. Two types of plays are developed in central and western China. The near-source play is most favorable for the formation of large stratigraphic hydrocarbon reservoirs. Objective Methods Results Interpretation The objective of this study was to investigate the activity and connectivity of cerebral and cerebellar cortices underlying the sensory trick (ST) effects in patients with cervical dystonia (CD), using electroencephalography (EEG).We recruited 15 CD patients who exhibited clinically effective ST and 15 healthy controls (HCs) who mimicked the ST maneuver. EEG signals and multiple‐channel electromyography (EMG) were recorded simultaneously during resting and acting stages. EEG source analysis and functional connectivity were performed. To account for the effects of sensory processing, we calculated relative power changes as the difference in power spectral density between resting and the maneuver execution.ST induced a decrease in low gamma (30–50 Hz) spectral power in the primary sensory and cerebellar cortices, which remained lower than in HCs during the maintenance period. Compared with HCs, patients exhibited consistently strengthened connectivity within the sensorimotor network during the maintenance period, particularly in the primary sensory‐sensorimotor cerebellum connection.The application of ST resulted in altered cortical excitability and functional connectivity regulated by gamma oscillation in CD patients, suggesting that this effect cannot be solely attributed to motor components. Objectives: The aim of this research was to explore the origin, diversification, and demographic history of O1a‐M119 over the past 10,000 years, as well as its role during the formation of East Asian and Southeast Asian populations, particularly the Han, Tai‐Kadai‐speaking, and Austronesian‐speaking populations. Materials and Methods: Y‐chromosome sequences (n = 141) of the O1a‐M119 lineage, including 17 newly generated in this study, were used to reconstruct a revised phylogenetic tree with age estimates, and identify sub‐lineages. The geographic distribution of 12 O1a‐M119 sub‐lineages was summarized, based on 7325 O1a‐M119 individuals identified among 60,009 Chinese males. Results: A revised phylogenetic tree, age estimation, and distribution maps indicated continuous expansion of haplogroup O1a‐M119 over the past 10,000 years, and differences in demographic history across geographic regions. We propose several sub‐lineages of O1a‐M119 as founding paternal lineages of Han, Tai‐Kadai‐speaking, and Austronesian‐speaking populations. The sharing of several young O1a‐M119 sub‐lineages with expansion times less than 6000 years between these three population groups supports a partial common ancestry for them in the Neolithic Age; however, the paternal genetic divergence pattern is much more complex than previous hypotheses based on ethnology, archeology, and linguistics. Discussion Our analyses contribute to a better understanding of the demographic history of O1a‐M119 sub‐lineages over the past 10,000 years during the emergence of Han, Austronesians, Tai‐Kadai‐speaking populations. The data described in this study will assist in understanding of the history of Han, Tai‐Kadai‐speaking, and Austronesian‐speaking populations from ethnology, archeology, and linguistic perspectives in the future. 1. Introduction Sugarcane is the principle sugar crop in the world. Cane sugar accounts for over 75% of the sugar production in the world and 92% of that in China. [...], Differential gene expression in sugarcane during sugarcane- Ustilago scitaminea interaction was conducted in a smut- resistant genotype. Using cDNA-AFLP along with silver staining, a total of 136 transcript-derived fragments (TDFs) were found to be differentially expressed in response to challenge by U. scitaminea. Forty TDFs, 34 newly induced plus six with obvious upregulated expression after infection, were sequenced and validated by RT-PCR analysis. These results demonstrated that the expression of 37 out of these TDFs in RT-PCR analysis was consistent with that in cDNA-AFLP analysis. Based on BlastX in NCBI, 28 TDFs were assumed to function in sugarcane under U. scitaminea stress. Analysis of expression profile of three TDFs revealed that they responded differently after infection with U. scitaminea, and the transcription was significantly enhanced. The response of two TDFs, SUC06 and SUC09, occurred before that of SUC10. This study enriches our knowledge of the molecular basis for sugarcane response to U. scitaminea infection.
