We report on a measurement of the proton structure function F 2 in the range 3.5×10-5≤x≤4×10-3 and 1.5 GeV2≤Q 2≤15GeV2 at the ep collider HERA operating at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=300GeV. The rise of F 2 with decreasing x observed in the previous HERA measurements persists in this lower x and Q 2 range. The Q 2 evolution of F 2, even at the lowest Q 2 and x measured, is consistent with perturbative QCD. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range of $Q^2$ from 10 to $1280 {\rm\ GeV}^2$. The evolution with $Q$ of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD \linebreak coherence effects in DIS and are compared with corresponding \ee~data in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation., 33 pages, latex, 8 figures appended as uuencoded file

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - φ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(γρ CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and ETjet distributions.

The exclusive production of $\rho^0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q^2 < 25$ GeV$^2$ for $\gamma^*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q^{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ^{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho^0$'s are observed. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$., Comment: 22 pages, latex, 4 figures appended

Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, σel νp, inelastic diffractive production, σnd νp, non-diffractive production, σd νp, as well as the total cross section, σtot νp, have been measured at an average υp center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. This paper presents our first measurement of the F 2 structure function in neutral-current, deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at HERA, the ep colliding beam facility at DESY. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 24.7 nb −1 . Results are presented for data in range of Q 2 from 10 GeV 2 to 4700 GeV 2 and Bjorken x down to 3.0 × 10 −4 . The F 2 structure function increases rapidly as x decreases.

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

We study the production of single γ, e and μ at high πt using the high energy data of the Mark-J detector at PETRA. We find good agreement with QED. We give mass limits of the SUSY particles γ , v , e and W studying the associated production of W and ẽ and radiative production of pairs of γ or v in three-body reactions.

The strong interaction coupling constant αs has been measured with a new method, the planar triple energy correlation in the reaction e+e- → hadrons at center-of-mass energies ranging from 14 GeV to 46.78 GeV. A complete second-order perturbative QCD calculation was used. ΛMS = 110 ± 30 −55+70 MeV is found.

We use the reaction e-italic/sup +/e/sup -/..-->..hadrons, in the Mark J detector at the DESY electron-positron collider PETRA, to determine the hadronic cross section up to 46.78 GeV. The production of a top quark with a charge equal to (2/3) is excluded up to 46.6 GeV with 95% C.L. The observed rise in the cross section at higher energies is consistent with the electroweak prediction for a Z-italic/sup 0/ mass of 93 GeV. We describe some unusual muon inclusive events.

The results of a high-statistics study of inclusive muon spectra at PETRA are reported. Improved mass limits have been obtained for heavy quarks, heavy leptons, and charged Higgs particles. It is shown that the fragmentation properties of b quarks and c quarks are different, with the mean fragmentation variables = 0.75 +- 0.03 +- 0.06, = 0.46 +- 0.02 +- 0.05 and the average semileptonic branching ratio for the B and C hadrons BR(B) = (10.5 +- 1.5 +- 1.3)%, BR(C) = (11.5 +- 1.0 +- 1.7)%.

The authors report mass limits on the Z/sup 0/ and W/sup +/-/, supersymmetric partners of the Z/sup 0/ and W/sup +/-/, respectively, using the MARK-J detector at PETRA. The experimental signatures in both cases are acoplanar lepton pairs with missing energy. For the W/sup +/-/, an additional signature is a single energetic lepton. No evidence is found for either the Z/sup 0/ (M/sub Z//sub 0/ < 35 GeV) or the W/sup +/-/ (M/sub W/ < 25 GeV). 15 references, 2 figures.

With a PETRA energy scan in \ensuremath{\le}30-MeV steps, the continuum production of open top quark up to 38.54 GeV is excluded. Over regions of energy scan from 29.90 to 38.63 GeV limits are set on the product of hadronic branching ratio and electronic width ${B}_{h}{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\mathrm{ee}}$ for toponium to be less than 2.0 keV at the 95% confidence level. By a search for flavor-changing neutral currents in $b$ decay, models without a top quark are excluded.

The Mark J Collaboration at the DESY e/sup +/e/sup -/ collider PETRA presents results on the electroweak reactions e/sup +/e/sup -/..--> mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/tau/sup +/tau/sup -/,..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/..gamma.., and e/sup +/e/sup -/..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/. The c.m. energy range is 12 to 46.78 GeV. In the ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ and tau/sup +/tau/sup -/ channels the total cross sections and the forward-backward asymmetries are reported and compared with other experiments. The results are in excellent agreement with the standard model. The weak-neutral-current vector and axial-vector coupling constants are determined. The values for muons and tau's are compatible with universality and with the predictions of the standard model. In the ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/..gamma.. channel, all measured distributions, including the forward-backward muon asymmetry, are in excellent agreement with the electroweak theory. Our data on the two-photon process, e/sup +/e/sup -/..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, agrees with QED to order ..cap alpha../sup 4/ over the entire energy range and the Q/sup 2/ range from 0.7 to 166 GeV/sup 2/.

Using the Mark-J detector at the high-energy e/sup +/e/sup -/ collider PETRA, we compare the data from hadron production with the complete second-order QCD calculation over the energy region 22 to 46.78 GeV. We determine the QCD parameter ..lambda.. = 100 +- 30/sub -/45/sup +65/ MeV which yields the strong-coupling constant ..cap alpha../sub s/ = 0.12 +- 0.02 for ..sqrt..s = 44 GeV.

The mass of the Ω − hyperon was measured to be 1673.3 ± 1.0 MeV. The error includes the statistical as well as a detailed evaluation of the systematic uncertainties. A test was made of the equal mass spacing rule for the SU(3) baryon decuplet and found to be satisfied for a spacing 141.5 ± 2.5 MeV.

Evidence is presented confirming the existence of the $\ensuremath{\Xi}(1815)$ baryon with strangeness $S=\ensuremath{-}2$ as well as two new $\ensuremath{\Xi}$ resonances with masses 2030\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}10 MeV and 2430\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}20 MeV, respectively. It is speculated that the $\ensuremath{\Xi}(2030)$ is a member of a ${\frac{5}{2}}^{+}$ octet, and an SU(3) analysis of the decay rates of the conjectured states is in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

With use of the MARK-J detector at $\sqrt{s}=34.7$ GeV 21 000 ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{hadron}$ events have been collected. By measurement of the asymmetry in angular energy correlations the strong coupling constant ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}=0.13\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01 (\mathrm{statistical})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02 (\mathrm{systematic})$ is determined, in complete second order, and independent of the fragmentation models and QCD cutoff values used.

We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel ${\rm D}^{*+}\rightarrow (\Do \rightarrow {\rm K}^-\pi^+)\pi^+$ (+ c.c.). Clear signals in the mass difference $\Delta M$=$M$(D$^*$)--$M$(D$^0)$ as well as in the $M(K\pi)$ distribution at the D$^0$ mass are found.
