Abstract

Remifentanil is an ultra-short-acting synthetic opioid-class analgesic which might be increasingly used “off-label” as pain management during labour. Side effects in parturients during labour, and in the infant at birth are of particular concern, especially respiratory depression which is concentration-dependent, and can occur at levels as low as 3–5 ng mL–1. The safety of such use, particularly in newborns due to remifentanil placental transfer, has not been fully demonstrated yet, partly due to the lack of a suitable non-invasive analytical method. The aim of our work was to develop a sensitive method to monitor the levels of remifentanil in neonates by a non-invasive sampling of umbi lical cord blood to support efficacy and safety trials. The presented LC-MS method is sensitive enough to reliably quantify remifentanil in just 20 µL of blood at only 0.3 ng mL–1. The dried blood spot sample preparation included solvent extraction with subsequent solid-phase extraction. The method was validated in terms of accuracy, precision, recovery, matrix effect, and stability, and was successfully applied to a small pilot study. The estimated arterial blood concentrations at the time of delivery ranged from 0.2 to 0.3, and up to 0.9 ng mL–1 in neonatal, and maternal samples, respectively.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Species host diverse microbial communities that can impact their digestion and health, which has led to much interest in understanding the factors that influence their microbiota. We studied the developmental, environmental, and social factors that influence the microbiota of nestling barn owls (Tyto alba) through a partial cross-fostering experiment that manipulated the social and nest environment of the nestlings. We then examined the nestling microbiota before and three weeks after the exchange of nestlings between nests, along with the microbiota of the adults at the nest and nestlings in unmanipulated nests. RESULTS: We found that nestlings had higher bacterial diversity and different bacterial communities than adults. The microbiota of nestlings was more like that of their mothers than their fathers, but the similarity to the father tended to increase with the amount of time the father was in close proximity to the nest, as measured from movement data. Cross-fostered offspring had higher bacterial diversity and greater changes in bacterial community composition over time than control offspring. Cross-fostering led the microbiota of the nestlings in the experiment to converge on similar bacterial communities. The microbiota of nestling owls therefore rapidly changed along with alterations to their social and nest environments. CONCLUSIONS: These results highlight the dynamic nature of the microbiota during early development and that social interactions can shape microbial communities.

Abstract

We present Jamba-1.5, new instruction-tuned large language models based on our Jamba architecture. Jamba is a hybrid Transformer-Mamba mixture of experts architecture, providing high throughput and low memory usage across context lengths, while retaining the same or better quality as Transformer models. We release two model sizes: Jamba-1.5-Large, with 94B active parameters, and Jamba-1.5-Mini, with 12B active parameters. Both models are fine-tuned for a variety of conversational and instruction-following capabilties, and have an effective context length of 256K tokens, the largest amongst open-weight models. To support cost-effective inference, we introduce ExpertsInt8, a novel quantization technique that allows fitting Jamba-1.5-Large on a machine with 8 80GB GPUs when processing 256K-token contexts without loss of quality. When evaluated on a battery of academic and chatbot benchmarks, Jamba-1.5 models achieve excellent results while providing high throughput and outperforming other open-weight models on long-context benchmarks. Abstract

We study a mixture of extensile and contractile cells using a vertex model extended to include active nematic stresses. The two cell populations phase separate over time. While phase separation strengthens monotonically with an increasing magnitude of contractile activity, the dependence on extensile activity is non-monotonic, so that sufficiently high values reduce the extent of sorting. We interpret this by showing that extensile activity renders the system motile, enabling cells to undergo neighbour exchanges. Contractile cells that come into contact as a result are then more likely to stay connected due to an effective attraction arising from contractile activity.

Abstract

Tissue homeostasis, the biological process of maintaining a steady state in tissue via control of cell proliferation, death, and metabolic function, is essential for the development, growth, maintenance, and proper function of living organisms. Disruptions to this process can lead to serious diseases and even death. In this study, we use the vertex model for the cell-level description of tissue mechanics to investigate the impact of the tissue microenvironment and local mechanical properties of cells on homeostasis in confined epithelial tissues. We find a dynamic steady state, where the balance between cell divisions and removals sustains homeostasis. By characterising homeostasis in terms of cell count, tissue area, and the cells' neighbour count distribution, we identify the factors that govern regulated and ordered tissue growth. This work, therefore, sheds light on the mechanisms underlying tissue homeostasis and highlights the importance of mechanics in the control of biological processes such as tissue development and disease pathology., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

A graph of order $n$ is distance magic if it admits a bijective labeling of its vertices with integers from $1$ to $n$ such that each vertex has the same sum of the labels of its neighbors. In this paper we classify all distance magic Cartesian products of two cycles, thereby correcting an error in a widely cited paper from 2004. Additionally, we show that each distance magic labeling of a Cartesian product of cycles is determined by a pair or quadruple of suitable sequences, thus obtaining a complete characterization of all distance magic labelings of these graphs. Abstract

The mechanics of epithelial tissues, which is governed by forces generated in various cell domains, is often investigated using two-dimensional models that account for the apically-positioned actomyosin structures but neglect basolateral mechanics. We employ a more detailed three-dimensional model to study how lateral surface tensions affect the structure and rigidity of such tissues. We find that cells are apicobasally asymmetric, with one side appearing more ordered than the other depending on cell target perimeter. In contrast to the 2D model, which predicts a rigidity transition at large target perimeters, tissues in the 3D model remain solid-like across all parameter space.

9. Vertex model with internal dissipation enables sustained flows

Abstract

Complex tissue flows in epithelia are driven by intra- and inter-cellular processes that generate, maintain, and coordinate mechanical forces. There has been growing evidence that cell shape anisotropy, manifested as nematic order, plays an important role in this process. Here we extend an active nematic vertex model by replacing substrate friction with internal viscous dissipation, dominant in epithelia not supported by a substrate or the extracellular matrix, which are found in many early-stage embryos. When coupled to cell shape anisotropy, the internal viscous dissipation allows for long-range velocity correlations and thus enables the spontaneous emergence of flows with a large degree of spatiotemporal organisation. We demonstrate sustained flow in epithelial sheets confined to a channel, providing a link between the cell-level vertex model of tissue dynamics and continuum active nematics, whose behaviour in a channel is theoretically understood and experimentally realisable. Our findings also show a simple mechanism that could account for collective cell migration correlated over distances large compared to the cell size, as observed during morphogenesis.

Abstract

The practice of salvage logging dead and damaged timber following large high severity disturbances has raised much controversy, partly because of the negative ecological effects that such practices have on forest ecosystems. Many of the studies on salvage logging effects, however, have been done on sites damaged by large, severe disturbances. Less is known about the ecological consequences of salvage logging following intermediate severity disturbances that cause partial canopy damage at smaller scales. We examined the response of the herbaceous layer and tree regeneration to salvaged and non-salvaged treatments following small-scale intermediate severity disturbances in eight mixed beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) dominated forest stands in Slovenia. The cover and diversity of herbaceous vegetation, as well as the density and diversity of tree regeneration were similar between treatments across the study sites. The only notable differences between the treatments were that salvaged sites had a larger proportion of shade intolerant tree species in the regeneration layer, while non-salvaged sites tended to have a more well-developed regeneration layer in taller height classes. The results suggest that salvage logging following small-scale intermediate severity disturbances may not hinder forest recovery in mixed beech dominated forests.

17. Tetravalent distance magic graphs of small order and an infinite family of examples

Abstract

A graph of order $n$ is distance magic if it admits a bijective labeling of its vertices with integers from $1$ to $n$ such that each vertex has the same sum of the labels of its neighbors. This paper contributes to the long term project of characterizing all tetravalent distance magic graphs. With the help of a computer we find that out of almost nine million connected tetravalent graphs up to order $16$ only nine are distance magic. In fact, besides the six well known wreath graphs there are only three other examples, one of each of the orders $12$, $14$ and $16$. We introduce a generalization of wreath graphs, the so-called quasi wreath graphs, and classify all distance magic graphs among them. This way we obtain infinitely many new tetravalent distance magic graphs. Moreover, the two non-wreath graphs of orders $12$ and $14$ are quasi wreath graphs while the one of order $16$ can be obtained from a quasi wreath graph of order $14$ using a simple construction due to Kov\'a\v{r}, Fron\v{c}ek and Kov\'a\v{r}ov\'a., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Background. Ultrasound elastography is an imaging procedure that can assess the biomechanical characteristics of different tissues. The aim of this study was to define the diagnostic value of the endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) elastography strain ratio of mediastinal lymph nodes in patients with a suspicion of lung cancer. The diagnostic values of the strain ratios were compared with the EBUS brightness mode (B-mode) features of selected mediastinal lymph nodes and with their cytological diagnoses.

Abstract

We present a theoretical description of resonant charge transfer in collisions of nano-particles, specifically for $C_{60} + C_{60}^+$ collisions. We predict that transient bonds between colliding fullerenes can significantly extend the interaction time, allowing for a greater probability of charge transfer. In our model, the dumbbell-shaped $(C_{60}-C_{60})^+$ quasi-molecule, that is temporarily formed during the collision, is described as a dynamic system of 120 zero-range potentials. Using this model, we calculate the exchange interaction between colliding fullerenes and subsequently determine the corresponding charge transfer cross sections at different collision velocities. Our results have been verified with data obtained from quantum molecular dynamics simulations of the fullerene collisions. 20. Inner Energy Relaxation and Growth of Nano-Size Particles

Abstract

In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the relaxation of the internal energy in nano-sized particles and its impact on the nucleation of atomic clusters. Quantum-mechanical potentials were utilized to analyze the growth and collision relaxation of the internal energy of Ar$_n$H$^+$ clusters in a metastable Ar gas. The results revealed that small nano-clusters are formed in highly excited rotational-vibrational states, and the relaxation of internal energy and growth of these nascent clusters are concurrent processes with a strong mutual influence. Under non-equilibrium growth conditions, the relaxation of internal energy can delay the cluster growth process. The rates of cluster growth and internal energy relaxation were found to be influenced by energy-transfer collisions between cluster particles and free Ar atoms of the bath gas. Furthermore, the non-equilibrium growth and internal energy relaxation of small nano-clusters were found to depend on the structure of the cluster's atomic shells. An ensemble of molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the growth, time-evolution of kinetic and total energies of Ar$_n$H$^+$ clusters with specified $n \leq 11$, and the results were explained by collisional relaxation processes described by the Boltzmann equation. Abstract

We study the vertex model for epithelial tissue mechanics extended to include coupling between the cell shapes and tensions in cell-cell junctions. This coupling represents an active force which drives the system out of equilibrium and leads to the formation of nematic order interspersed with prominent, long-lived $+1$ defects. The defects in the nematic ordering are coupled to the shape of the cell tiling, affecting cell areas and coordinations. This intricate interplay between cell shape, size, and coordination provides a possible mechanism by which tissues could spontaneously develop long-range polarity through local mechanical forces without resorting to long-range chemical patterning.

Abstract

A semi-classical model describing the charge transfer collisions of $C_{60}$ fullerene with different slow ions has been developed to explain available experimental data. This data reveals multiple Breit-Wigner like peaks in the cross sections, with subsequent peaks of reactive cross sections decreasing in magnitude. Calculations of the charge transfer probabilities and cross sections for quasi-resonant and reactive collisions have been performed using semi-empirical potentials of interaction between fullerenes and ion projectiles. All computations have been carried out with realistic wave functions for $C_{60}$'s valence electrons derived from the simplified jellium model. The quality of these electron wave functions have been successfully verified by comparing theoretical calculations and experimental data on the small angle cross sections of resonant $C_{60}+ C_{60}^+$ collisions. Using the semi-empirical potentials to describe resonant scattering phenomena in $C_{60}$ collisions with ions and Landau-Zener charge transfer theory, we calculated theoretical cross sections for various $C_{60}$ charge transfer and fragmentation reactions which agree with experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

Recently, the study on nanoparticles application in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) starts to growth. Nanoparticles have given better indication for EOR development such as in foam stability as its nano size particles can be feasibly dispersed in aqueous solution and easily flow through porous media. Aggregation of nanoparticles are said to be a major contributor for paralyzing nanoparticles dispersion deep into the formation. Hence, in this research sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is used as stabilizing solvents or carrier fluids in enhancing nanoparticles properties to prevent coagulation of nanoparticles when mixed to create a nanofluid. The dispersion of various concentration of silica oxide (SiO2) and aluminium oxide (Al2O3) are examined by using turbidity test. Results from this research show that the silicon dioxide nanoparticles are at best to be mixed in NaOH solvent to retain longer retention time.

Abstract

The time-dependent kinetics of formation and evolution of nano-size atomic clusters is investigated and illustrated with the nucleation dynamics of ion-seed Ar$_n$H$^+$ particles. The rates of growth and degradation of Ar-atomic shells around the seed ion are inferred from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Simulations of cluster formation have been performed with accurate quantum-mechanical binary interaction potentials. Both the nonequilibrium and equilibrium growth of Ar$_n$H$^+$ are investigated at different temperature and densities of the atomic gas and seed ions. Formation of Ar$_{n\leq 40}$ shells is the main mechanism which regulates the kinetics of nano-cluster growth and the diffusive fluctuations of the cluster size distribution. The time-evolution of the cluster intrinsic energy and cluster size distributions are analyzed at the non-thermal, quasi-equilibrium, and thermal equilibrium stages of Ar$_n$H$^+$ formation. We've determined the self-consistent model parameters for the temporal fluctuations of the cluster size and found coefficients of the diffusive growth mechanism describing the equilibrium distribution of nano-clusters. But when planning interventions inside classrooms one needs to consider the context of each specific classroom, e.g., relationships between students and teachers. Based on the Developmental System Theory and Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System Model, this study examines the mediating effect of the positive and negative student-teacher relationships on the relationship between empathy (cognitive and emotional components) and aggression. We use a randomised sample of 539 students from two countries (Slovenia: N = 271, M = 12.91 years, 56.3% female; Croatia: N = 268, M = 13.60 years, 47.4% female). We measure empathy with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, aggression with the AG-UD Aggression Scale and student-teacher-relationships with the Perceived Quality of Student-Teacher Relations measures. The findings show that empathy plays an important role in aggression, but interestingly, the component is different in the two countries. In Slovenia, there is a significant negative direct path from the cognitive component of empathy, Perspective taking, to aggression, while in Croatia, there is a similar path, but starting from the emotional component of empathy, Empathic concern. In both countries, Negative student-teacher relationships mediated the relationship between mentioned components of empathy and aggression, thus showing the importance of classroom context, e.g., the relationships with teachers, when addressing empathy and aggression of students in the school context. The practical implication based on our findings is the prevention of negative student-teacher relationships and the promotion of empathy among students (as well as teachers).
