Abstract

A sequence of multiple parts is processed on a multi-position transfer line of conveyor type. This sequence consists of identical subsequences (batches). The sets of operations executed for each part at each position are given and these sets for different parts can intersect. Some operations executed at one position can be aggregated into blocks of operations. Each block is executed at a uniform rate (in particular, feed per minute) by a common drive unit. The set of potentially feasible blocks is specified. We consider the situation when the sets of operations for different blocks do not intersect and each potential block can be executed either completely aggregated (i.e. as one block) or completely disaggregated (individually). Aggregation reduces the investment costs, but can increase the consumption of tools due to excluding the individual selection of rates for aggregated operations. The accepted option of the aggregation and the rates of operations remain invariable during the line functioning. The problem is to select the optimal option of aggregation and rates of all operations that minimise the total batch processing cost while ensuring the required line productivity. A mathematical model of the problem and a two-level decomposition method for its solution are proposed. The statement of the problem and the results of its solution are illustrated on a real industrial example. Abstract

International audience; The problem of optimization of throughput and manufacturing operation intensities for a number of timeperiods for a multi-product production/assembly line under random demand is considered. The objective is tominimize the total cost. The input sequence of products is composed of cyclically repeated identical batches. Abatch can be composed of identical or different products. The products of a batch are processed one by one at eachposition in the order of their arrival. At each time point, only a single product is disposed at each position. The linefunctioning consists of cyclically repeated sequence of takts, where at each takt operations for all products locatedat the positions are simultaneously executed. The set of operations to be executed at a takt depends on product andposition. The probability distribution of possible demand for each product is assumed known for each time period.For each position, the set of options for equipment which can be used to perform the corresponding sets ofoperations is given. The batch and selected equipment are invariable over all periods. The cost of each takt includescosts of its operations and an additional cost linearly depending on the takt duration. The sum of manufacturing cost,average costs of storage and/or average penalties for unmet demand on products is used as the objective function. Adecomposition method for solving the problem is proposed.

Abstract

A collection of intersecting sets of operations is considered. These sets of operations are performed successively. The operations of each set are activated simultaneously. Operation durations can be modified. The cost of each operation decreases with the increase in operation duration. In contrast, the additional expenses for each set of operations are proportional to its time. The problem of selecting the durations of all operations that minimize the total cost under constraint on completion time for the whole collection of operation sets is studied. The mathematical model and method to solve this problem are presented. The proposed method is based on a combination of Lagrangian relaxation and dynamic programming. The results of numerical experiments that illustrate the performance of the proposed method are presented. This approach was used for optimization multi-spindle machines and machining lines, but the problem is common in engineering optimization and thus the techniques developed could be useful for other applications.
