A study was performed to determine the left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic function in closed-chest dogs prior and after administration of ryanodine, an inhibitor of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ release channel. Since the basic determinant of LV function was the intracellular handling of Ca2+, the inhibitory effects of ryanodine were investigated. Results showed that ryanodine decelerated the LV mechanical events without changing the heart rate. It also attenuated overall LV contractile performance.

C-banding patterns of 32 beetle species from the families Elateridae, Cantharidae, Oedemeridae, Cerambycidae, Anthicidae, Chrysomelidae, Attelabidae and Curculionidae were studied using the C-banding technique. Mitotic and meiotic chromosomes were previously described for 14 species. From among 18 species that had never been cytogenetically studied, we determined the diploid and haploid chromosome numbers and the sex determination system for 12 beetles. The karyotype for 6 species is not described because of a lack of mitotic and meiotic metaphases. Results confirm that most of the beetle species possess a small amount of heterochromatin and C-positive segments are weakly visible in pachytene stages and weakly or imperceptible in mitotic and meiotic metaphases. In some species with a large amount of heterochromatin, C-bands were observed in the centromeric region in all autosomes and the X chromosome. The Y chromosome does not show C-bands with the exception of Oedemera viridis in which it possesses a small band of heterochromatin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: According to the literature exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is relatively common among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Pseudocysts are the most common cystic lesions and may be formed in the setting of acute or chronic pancreatitis. However, whether DM is involved or not in pancreatic cyst formation is still not well established., Aim: To investigate the frequency and risk factors of cystic lesions in diabetic patients., Material and Methods: One hundred and sixty-one patients with DM, with no previous history of pancreatic diseases, were prospectively included in the study. Endosonography followed by fine needle aspiration biopsy was then performed., Results: Finally, 33 of 161 patients (20.5%) were recognized with cystic lesions of the pancreas. Among them 5 patients were classified as cystic neoplasms, and 28 as pseudocysts. In the group of patients with pseudocysts, cystic lesions were significantly more prevalent in individuals with DM lasting less than 3 years. Prevalence of cystic lesions was significantly higher in metformin users in comparison to other diabetic patients ( p < 0.05). Cystic lesions were more frequent in patients above 50 years of age ( p < 0.05)., Conclusions: The prevalence of cystic lesions in the diabetic population is higher than in the general population. DM seems to play a major role in the process of cyst development, especially in patients without previous history of pancreatitis. Higher prevalence of cystic lesions in early diabetes seems to be the first stage of pancreatic injury. Discitis/ Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory process involving an intervertebral disc and the adjacent vertebral bodies. Infection is the most common cause of discitis, which is often spontaneous and hematogenous in origin. However, many noninfectious processes affecting the spine such as pseudarthrosis in ankylosing spondylitis, amyloidosis, destructive spondyloarthropathy of hemodialysis, Modic changes type 1, neuropathic arthropathy, calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate (CPPD) spondyloarthropathy and gout can mimic infectious discitis/ osteomyelitis. To determine whether a particular patient's spinal process is due to an infectious versus non-infectious cause can be challenging. Although clinical findings and laboratory studies including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) or C-reactive protein (CRP) can be helpful in the diagnosis of bacterial discitis/osteomyelitis due to their high sensitivity; however, their specificity is low. Moreover, both the infectious and non-infectious discitis can appear quite similar on the imaging studies. We present two cases of thoracic discitis with adjacent vertebral osteomyelitis of probable non-infectious etiology. Both were managed with instrumented fusion for stabilization. Objective: The aim: Women of reproductive age often think of motherhood and labor with fear of intense labor pain. The anxiety they experience can lead to their postponing pregnancy. There are not many studies in the literature that research the knowledge young women have about the analgesia of labor. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the state of awareness about the possible methods of labor analgesia among women of childbearing age., Patients and Methods: Material and methods: An Internet survey was conducted among 160 women. It consisted of questions on the pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of labor analgesia. Most of the respondents were not medical university students (96.2%). Correct answers ranged between 11.3% and 97.5% of the total responses., Results: Results: The greatest number of incorrect answers were given to the question regarding contraindications to labor anesthesia (only 11.3% of answers were correct). There was also a low percentage of correct answers to questions about the risk of spinal cord injury during the procedure of inducing anesthesia (18.8% of correct answers), the motor activity of a woman after analgesia (22.5%) and the reimbursement of anesthesia (29.4%). Nearly 40% of the respondents did not know the correct answer to the question about the possibility of breastfeeding after anesthesia. The problem of aalgesia during twin delivery also posed a challenge. Over half of the respondents (54.1%) incorrectly answered the question about the occurrence of complications among women who want to become pregnant again after the procedure of labor anesthesia. Moreover, 70.6% of the women surveyed considered non-pharmacological methods of labor anesthesia to be safer compared to pharmacological analgesia. The most commonly mentioned methods of non-pharmacological labor pain relief included breathing techniques and water birth., Conclusion: Conclusions: The study shows that women of childbearing potential have an unsatisfactory level of knowledge about labor anesthesia. There is a need to improve the level of health education on this topic.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence, associated anomalies, and postnatal outcomes in infants prenatally diagnosed with ventriculomegaly., Material and Methods: All cases of ventriculomegaly that were examined and treated by the 1st Department of Obstet- rics and Gynecology, at the Medical University of Warsaw, from August 2007 until November 2017 were included in this study. Ultrasound data, and information on perinatal outcomes and long-term postnatal follow up were retrospectively collected by a standardised telephone survey. Ventriculomegaly was diagnosed when the atrial width of the lateral ventri- cles was ≥ 10 mm. The cases analyzed were divided into two subgroups: isolated ventriculomegaly (IVM) and non-isolated ventriculomegaly (NIVM). Neurodevelopmental complications were differentiated as either moderate or severe and were compared within each group and between groups., Results: There were 118 cases of prenatally diagnosed ventriculomegaly. Complete follow up records were collected for 54 cases (45.8%). IVM was diagnosed in 29/54 (53.7%) cases, while NIVM was diagnosed in the remaining 25 (46.3%). The mean ventricular width for IVM was 16.93 mm (range 10.0 mm-73.0 mm) and 14.08 mm (range 9.0 mm-27.1 mm) for NIVM (p = 0.28). The mean gestational age at delivery for the IVM cases was 36 + 4 weeks and in the NIVM group 33 + 4 weeks (p = 0.022). Mild VM (10-12 mm) was diagnosed in 22/54 cases (40.7%), moderate VM (13-15 mm) in 12/54 (22.3%) and severe (≥ 15 mm) in 20/54 (37%). Among the infants with IVM the rate of severe medical complications was 29.6% (8/28) and for NIVM 667% (8/12) (p = 0.041). Less severe medical conditions affected 6/28 of the infants with IVM (21.4%) vs 9/12 NIVM cases (75%) (p = 0.012)., Conclusions: In terms of prenatal diagnosis, treatment of ventriculomegaly remains challenging due to a lack of specific prognostic factors and the significant risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. Nevertheless, isolated ventriculomegaly has significantly better long-term outcomes compared with non-isolated ventriculomegaly. In our material, the rate of severe neurodevelopmental disorders in the non-isolated ventriculomegaly cases was associated with a 52% rate of adverse perinatal outcomes. On the other hand, less severe medical conditions occurred in 21.4% of the infants with IVM and in 75% of the NIVM cases. Furthermore, obstetrical data suggest that the risks of premature delivery and caesarean section are significantly higher in cases of non-isolated ventriculomegaly.

The structure of the karyotypes of two Otiorhynchus species belonging to separate subgenera, viz. Otiorhynchus s.str. bisulcatus and O. (Zadrehus) atroapterus, is compared and described for the first time. Both species have the same chromosome number (2n = 22), sex chromosome system of an achiasmate parachute type (Xy(p)), symmetric karyotype with the prevalence of metacentrics, similar meiotic behaviour, localization of NORs and positive DAPI signals. The main differences involve the morphology of autosomes and the X chromosome in the C-banding pattern and DAPI/CMA3 signals as well as in the presence of additional B chromosomes.

Background and Purpose: Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) have emerged for patients requiring medical care beyond a short stay. Minimal data have been reported on functional outcomes in this setting. The purposes of this study were: (1) to measure the clinical utility of the Functional Status Score for the Intensive Care Unit (FSS-ICU) in an LTACH setting and (2) to explore the association between FSS-ICU score and discharge setting., Participants: Data were obtained from 101 patients (median age=70 years, interquartile range [IQR]=61-78; 39% female, 61% male) who were admitted to an LTACH. Participants were categorized into 1 of 5 groups by discharge setting: (1) home (n=14), (2) inpatient rehabilitation facility (n=26), (3) skilled nursing facility (n=23), (4) long-term care/hospice/expired (n=13), or (5) transferred to a short-stay hospital (n=25)., Methods: Data were prospectively collected from a 38-bed LTACH in the United States over 8 months beginning in September 2010. Functional status was scored using the FSS-ICU within 4 days of admission and every 2 weeks until discharge. The FSS-ICU consists of 5 categories: rolling, supine-to-sit transfers, unsupported sitting, sit-to-stand transfers, and ambulation. Each category was rated from 0 to 7, with a maximum cumulative FSS-ICU score of 35., Results: Cumulative FSS-ICU scores significantly improved from a median (IQR) of 9 (3-17) to 14 (5-24) at discharge. Median (IQR) cumulative discharge FSS-ICU scores were significantly different among the discharge categories: home=28 (22-32), inpatient rehabilitation facility=21 (15-24), skilled nursing facility=14 (8-21), long-term care/hospice/expired=5 (0-11), and transfer to a short-stay hospital=4 (0-7)., Discussion and Conclusions: Patients receiving therapy at an LTACH demonstrate significant improvements from admission to discharge using the FSS-ICU. This outcome tool discriminates among discharge settings and successfully documents functional improvements of patients in an LTACH setting.

The karyotype structure of Protocalliphora falcozi is described for the first time. The diploid complement comprises 2n = 12, n(male) = 5+XY. Male mitotic plates include four pairs of long (metacentric) and one pair of medium-sized (submetacentric) autosomes. The submetacentric sex chromosomes X and Y are the smallest elements of the set. An achiasmatic meiosis was determined. The heterochromosomes do not form a heterovalent because they occur separately during the first meiotic division. The examined karyotype shows a pericentromeric position of constitutive heterochromatin in all autosomes. The longer arm of the X chromosome is heterochromatic, while the Y is entirely euchromatic. The NORs are active at mitotic prophase and at early meiotic stages. Small, bright signals were observed in the centromeric regions of autosomes after DAPI staining.

We investigated the cytological mechanism of parthenogenesis by analyzing the chromosomes in five weevil species. All examined species are polyploids, four of which: Otiorhynchus ovatus, Simo variegates, Cathormiocerus aristatus, and Tropiphorus elevatus possess three haploid sets of chromosomes (3n=33), whereas the fifth, Trachyphloeus parallelus, is tetraploid with 44 chromosomes (4n=44). The plates contained 27-31 chromosomes in triploid species and 38, 39, 41 and even 44 in tetraploid T. parallelus. In all species single clusters of metaphase plates with a haploid number of n=11 were visible. Some oogonial cells showed nuclei configurations resembling the stages of diplotene and diakinesis. The spiralized chromosomes in these nuclei may have been connected by chiasmata resulting in rods figures and ring-shaped bivalents. Occurrence of the remnants of meiosis could suggest some degree of recombination in parthenogenetic lineages of weevils.
