12. New Copolymer Architecture for Mixed Matrix Membranes with High Loadings of ZIF-8 for Enhanced CO2Permeability

Abstract

Membrane separation has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional separation processes for CO2capture. In this study, a new copolymer architecture corresponding to a PEO-based grafted multiblock copolymer (PUI-g-PEDEGA1000) was compared to the corresponding nongrafted multiblock copolymer (PUI-g) for elaborating mixed matrix membranes with high loadings of metal organic framework ZIF-8. The new grafted multiblock copolymer architecture greatly improved the ZIF-8 dispersion and the ZIF-8/polymer interactions. The gas permeation properties were assessed by time-lag experiments for pure gases CO2and N2at 2 bar and 35 °C. For the highest ZIF-8 loading (40% vol), the new copolymer architecture led to the best CO2permeability (112 Barrer), corresponding to an improvement by a factor of 6 compared to the unloaded membrane, while the ideal selectivity αCO2/N2was maintained at a relatively high level (30.4). Finally, the CO2/N2permeability experimental results were compared with permeation data calculated from semipredictive ideal permeability models.

29. Conformation and crystallinity in polymers : a study using novel Raman techniques

Abstract

Crystallinity and conformation of biopolymers, polyamides and even numbered normal paraffins were studied using novel Raman techniques. The newly developed Fourier transform Raman method was used for characterization of biopolymers and polyamides. Low frequency modes of vibration by conventional Raman spectroscopy were investigated in terms of structure for the paraffins. The temperature dependence of the low frequency and internal mode regions were studied for even n-paraffins from C₂₂H₄₆ to C₃₆H₇₄ and for the binary mixture C₂₈H₅₈₊ C₃₀H₆₂. Particular emphasis was placed on temperatures just below the melting point. The lattice packing in the crystals was found to depend on the history of the sample crystallization. As the temperature was raised up to the solid-solid phase transition, a change from two chains per unit cell to one chain was observed. The degree of order was found to decrease as the temperature increased but no evidence of the presence of defects was detected. The study of the binary mixture suggests that the chains in the mixture do not vibrate as isolated rods but rather like the longest hydrocarbon component. The FT Raman spectra of three solid homopolypeptides were acquired for the first time. These spectra show mainly sharp bands arising from the characteristic side group vibrations. The corresponding infrared spectra exhibit predominantly bands arising from secondary amide vibrations broadened by OH species absorptions. Thus identification was more readily achieved with the Raman technique. Studies in the liquid state led to the conclusion that considerable improvements in sensitivity are needed before the method becomes useful to biochemists. Aliphatic polyamides of the type nylon X and nylon X,Y were characterized by FT Raman. The spectra obtained tended towards that of polyethylene as the number of methylene group per repeat unit increases. The FT Raman study of samples of nylon 6 with different crystallinity led to the conclusion that this technique has the potential to give a quantitative measure of percentage crystallinity. Evidence is presented that FT Raman spectroscopy may be capable of distinguishing between various nylon copolymers. In contrast, it was confirmed that the infrared study of aliphatic polyamides does not provide an easy means to their identification since the strongest bands arise from the secondary amide vibrations and sample preparation in the form of film was required.

Abstract

International audience; Carbon nanotubes have been intensively studied because of their unique physical properties and many potential applications. One important application is when carbon nanotubes are used in polymer composites as novel conductive fillers to improve the dielectric properties of polymer blended with barium titanate (BaTiO3) ceramics. The three-phase composite with carbone nanotubes and BaTiO3 particles embedded into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were prepared by using a Haake blending mixer and pressed by hot-molding technique. The dielectric analysis show that the relative dielectric constant of the composite is slightly dependent on the frequency below 0.1 MHz and increases rapidly with MWCNT concentration. It is thus possible to reach a high dielectric constant equal to 7000. These films show interesting properties for an application in storage energy.

Abstract

To approach this project we have been working with the enterprise Corepa, that belongs to the group Derichebourg and which is situated in Pagny-­‐sur-­‐Meuse. This enterprise separates all the plastics received from all France for afterwards doing a revalorization and reuse of them. It mainly receives the rest of the grinding of the VHU (Vehicles out of use) and DEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), like the PAM (Small Electronic Devices) and the GEM (Big Electrical Appliances). The separation processes used are based on physicals and chemicals proprieties of the materials. They use methods such as flotation, which takes into account the density, the method of separation by «over-­‐band », which considers the magnetic characteristics and the infra red-­‐light, that considers the optic characteristics. The principal plastics that are valorised are: the PP (Polypropylene), the PS (Polystyrene), the HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) and the ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). Although the separation process is really controlled, there are still some problems that subsist and which we will try to solve, such as: -­‐ The efficacy of each operation individually is not known. We can observe, for example, some additives, such as colour or flameproof, can alter the physicochemical properties of the plastics. Having influence in the flotation and optical separation. -­‐ The quality of what goes out is also not known. This is a fundamental parameter, as it can help us to a better revalorization and the enterprise in consequence can have an economical gain. During the elaboration of the project we have had to face two big problems. The first one, is how can we characterize our samples, and how can we do for our sample to be representative of all the entire lot. Abstract

Background: Arterial bypass surgery of small-caliber vessels using synthetic vascular prostheses remains inefficient as they promote thrombosis probably due to a low or non-functionalization of their internal surface(1). As a potential therapeutic alternative, we have developed a human cellularized TEVG (tissue-engineered vascular graft) whose components are all derived from the umbilical cord. Methods: Decellularized umbilical arteries were coated at their luminal surface with an extracellular matrix extracted from Wharton's jelly and then cellularized by mesenchymal stromal cells derived also from WJ. The luminal coating and cellularization were optimized by an innovative "inside-out" method allowing easy access to the luminal surface. TEVG hemocompatibility (Thrombin Generation Assay) and mechanical properties (burst pressure test, stress rupture test, dynamic mechanical analysis) were evaluated. Preliminary in vivo implantations were conducted in pigs for coronary or femoral arterial bypass. Results: The "inside-out" method, which did not impact mechanical properties of the TEVG, allowed a homogeneous cellularization of arteries luminal surface confirming its adaptability to a vascular context. Hemocompatibility assays showed that the TEVG behaves as a native blood vessel due to full cell covering of the luminal surface. The TEVG was successfully implanted in a coronary artery bypass model (n = 1), and was well tolerated, colonized and remain patent for 2 weeks post-implantation in a femoral replacement model (n = 1). Conclusion: Our TEVG is an allogeneic therapeutic solution offering a ready-to-use graft that may supply a tissue bank and which can be grafted by minimally invasive robotic techniques avoiding an invasive surgery, having beneficial societal and economic impacts. Abstract

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix filled with TiO2 nanoparticles (1%, 2%, 3% and 5% by v/v%) were studied by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) in order to investigate the filler effect on the molecular mobility of the polymer chains. The formalism of electric modulus was used to analyze the dielectric response, thus three relaxation processes were observed. In fact, the first one, which is around −40°C at 10Hz, is attributed to the glass transition at low temperature. As for the second phenomenon, around 30°C at 10Hz, it is related to the dipolar relaxations in the crystalline phase. Regarding the third one, around 100°C at 10Hz, it can be due to the interfacial polarization (IP). The crystallinity ratio decreases and the electric modulus of the interfacial polarization increases with the increase of the TiO2 content. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Firstly, we have realized an random sampling, followed by the separation of the mass by quartering. We will explain these topics all along the report. For the characterization, we have mainly used two methods: Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Our school and the BWTEK society afforded both of them. Using these two methods we have obtained to some experimental results, however the lack of time has made us unable to characterize all our samples. Finally, we have used the program of treatment of data R to extrapolate our results to our samples and characterize our batch. To conclude, the principal objective of this project is to obtain some results for the enterprise, so the enterprise can see if their methods used are rentable or not. Outgoing
