Abstract: This research examines the Coast Guard’s maritime security relationship with the Cuban Border Guard—before, during, and after normalization—through a qualitative case study comparison of five distinct mission areas: drug interdiction, migrant interdiction, search and rescue, marine environmental protection, and port security. By reviewing the aftereffects of the Trump administration’s rollback of U.S.-Cuba policy, specifically the impact on the Coast Guard-Cuban Border Guard security relationship, it is possible to recognize that such a policy reversal does not serve the national security interests of the United States. The operational focus of the Coast Guard’s maritime security cooperation with the Cuban Border Guard, combined with measured growth in mission areas of mutual concern, are key factors in the long-term success of this important relationship. 2. Flexural behaviour of post-tensioned timber beams

Abstract: An experimental program was carried out to investigate the effect of post-tensioning on timber beams and the performance of timber bridge decks with post-tensioned stringers. The experimental program contains three phases. As part of the first phase, twenty shear tests were performed to determine the ultimate capacity of lag screws that could be used in the post-tensioning process. Results showed that six lag screws with a diameter of 12.7 mm were adequate for the anchorage system. The second phase included testing 22 full scale timber beams. Six beams were control without any reinforcement. The remaining sixteen beams were post-tensioned with either draped or straight carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tendons (Groups CD and C) or steel cables (Groups SD with draped cables and S with straight cables).The results revealed that the strength and the stiffness for Group CD were increased on average by 70% and 10%, respectively, while the strength for Group C was increased on average by 56%. In contrast, the strength and the stiffness for Group SD were increased on average by 45% and 4%, respectively, while the strength for Group S was increased on average by 49%. The bending strength of the post-tensioned timber beams was predicted using analytical model. The third phase of the research included the construction of four timber bridge decks: control deck (BD-CO), deck with stringers post-tensioned with draped CFRP tendons (BD-DC), deck with stringers post-tensioned with draped steel tendons (BD-DS), and a deck with stringers strengthened with near-surface mounted glass fibre-reinforced polymer bars (NSM-GFRP) referred to as BD-G. Post-tensioning the stringers of BD-DS and the stringers of BD-DC increased the apparent stiffness on average by 2% and 3%, respectively. Abstract: Geotechnical engineering design has relied upon deterministic methods of analysis whereby values for analysis parameters and conditions are selected subjectively based on judgment with the intent of providing acceptable margins of safety. The objective of this research was to improve the use of probabilistic slope stability analysis in practice so that the design of slopes can be made on a consistent and probabilistic basis. The current research involved the development of a methodology for the measurement and modeling of the anisotropic autocorrelation distance of cohesive soils, which was demonstrated at Dyke 17 West of the McArthur Falls Generating Station. In-situ testing using the piezocone and laboratory testing was conducted to characterize the spatial variability of the effective-shear strength envelope. Vertical (down-hole) and horizontal (cross-hole) geostatistical analysis was conducted to assess the anisotropy of the semivariogram. The investigation identified that heterogeneous inclusions had significant impacts on the results, but that simplistic (visual) identification and filtering procedures were adequate. The effective-stress shear strength envelope was statistically characterized as a random field, which was simulated as a first-order Markov process using customized add-in functions in a limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis. The analysis accounts for the spatial variability of shear strength and is capable of simulating both isotropic and anisotropic autocorrelation functions. The study showed that the critical slip surface geometry and the probability of failure can be significantly different when the anisotropy of spatial correlation is accounted for. The study also showed that neglecting spatial correlation may over-estimate the probability of failure, however this finding was noted to be likely case-specific. Abstract: This thesis investigates omnidirectional and directional ultra wideband (UWB) antennas for communication and microwave imaging applications. To reduce interference with existing technologies, monopole antennas with efficient band-stop functions are introduced. Single and double slots acting as series resonators are used. Reduction in the antenna gain in the stop-band regions of about 19.5 dB is achieved. Central metal removal and ground plane size effects on the antenna performance are investigated. To eliminate signal distortion caused by such monopole antennas, phase centre behaviour over the entire frequency band of operation is investigated at different principle planes, which have not been done before. This study will also show how these antennas act in different communication scenarios and where the radiation will be coming from at different frequencies. The effect of including different slots with different shapes on the performance of phase centre of these antennas is also investigated. Different methods to minimize the antenna phase centre movement are studied. Novel microstrip antennas with UWB impedance and radiation pattern bandwidth and low cross polarization components are introduced to work over the frequency band from 3 to 20 GHz. The antennas introduced are double-layer structures in which the radiator is sandwiched between two identical partial ground planes or a partial ground plane is sandwiched between two radiators. Results show a significant reduction in the cross polarization components at all frequencies. A novel high gain UWB Vee dipole antenna with a UWB coaxial balun feed is introduced to cover the existing and future UWB communication applications. Different type of loadings such as a reflecting ground below the antenna, a dielectric sleeve over the UWB balun and conical dielectrics between the Vee plates are also used and studied that show enhanced gains and lower sidelobes. Abstract: The molar heat capacity of ammonium pentabromoindate monohydrate (NH4)2InBr5 [middle dot] H2O was measured from 7.8 to 348 K using adiabatic calorimetry. The curve of heat capacity as a function of temperature is continous. There is no sign of the phase transition predicted by Yamada and Weiss (Ber. Bunsenges. Phys Chem. 1983, 87, 932). Values of the standard molar thermodynamic quantities for (NH4)2InBr5 [middle dot] H2O are presented to 345 K.

Abstract: The heat capacity of the scheelite salt: deuterated ammonium metaperiodate, ND4IO4, was measured from 8 to 329 K using adiabatic calorimetry. The heat capacity against temperature curve shows a broad maximum with a peak around 200 K which is typical of other ammonium scheelites. A small peak in the curve around 275 K resulted from fusion of a saturated D2O salt solution trapped in the lattice. Values of the standard molar thermodynamic quantities for ND4IO4 are presented up to 330 K.

Abstract: This article presents a new synthesis technique for circuits that may include dispersively coupled resonators and admitting an overall cascaded topology. A decomposition technique of the Darlington type is first introduced to split the original response $S$ of the filter, taken as its scattering matrix, into $m$ subresponses $S^{1}, {\dots },S^{m}$ corresponding to each subblock of the cascaded circuital structure. Each individual subresponse $S^{k}$ is then synthesized separately. In this article, the state space equations governing the model of dispersively coupled resonators are detailed. An extension to the case of dispersive coupling of the shortest path rule, which determines the maximum number of finite TZs realizable by a given topology, is then introduced. Congruent transformations that extend the concept of rotations or similarity transformations while preserving the filter response are exploited to reduce the individual synthesis problems to the determination of a basis of vectors verifying certain orthogonality relations. A direct synthesis technique for dispersive building blocks, such as duplets, triplets, and quadruplets, is then given in the form of an orthogonalization procedure used for the computation of the desired basis. This approach is then combined with the aforementioned decomposition technique to produce a versatile algorithm able to synthesize hybrid circuits made of cascaded subblocks of different orders and types that implement each a subset of the overall TZs by means of coupling topologies containing a mixture of dispersive and nondispersive couplings. The first synthesis example is detailed where two dispersive duplets are combined with a classical quadruplet to realize a symmetric 6–4 response. A hardware implementation of the synthesized circuit is presented in combline technology. The second example proposes a slightly more involved coupling topology able to realize 10–8 asymmetric responses by means of four cascaded basic dispersive blocks.

Abstract: A detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of young Sun-like stars can provide valuable information on our Sun's magnetic past and its impact on the early Earth. We determine the properties of the moderately rotating young Sun-like star kappa Ceti's magnetic and activity cycles using 50 years of chromospheric activity data and six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations. The chromospheric activity was determined by measuring the flux in the Ca II H and K lines. A generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a wavelet decomposition were used on the chromospheric activity data to establish the associated periodicities. The vector magnetic field of the star was reconstructed using the technique of Zeeman Doppler imaging on the spectropolarimetric observations. Our period analysis algorithms detect a 3.1 year chromospheric cycle in addition to the star's well-known ~6 year cycle period. Although the two cycle periods have an approximate 1:2 ratio, they exhibit an unusual temporal evolution. Additionally, the spectropolarimetric data analysis shows polarity reversals of the star's large-scale magnetic field, suggesting a ~10 year magnetic or Hale cycle. The unusual evolution of the star's chromospheric cycles and their lack of a direct correlation with the magnetic cycle establishes kappa Ceti as a curious young Sun. Such complex evolution of magnetic activity could be synonymous with moderately active young Suns, which is an evolutionary path that our own Sun could have taken., Comment: 15 pages including appendices, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: International audience; The capabilities of the Thermodynamic of Advanced Fuels – International Database (TAF-ID) for reproducing the chemical behaviour of irradiated nuclear fuel in severe accident conditions were studied, by comparing calculation results to experimental observations. SIMFUELs samples containing UO2 + 11 elements (Ba, Ce, La, Mo, Nd, Pd, Rh, Ru, Sr, Y and Zr, in concentration representative of a 76 GWd•tU-1 Burn-up) were submitted to 1327°C in oxidizing conditions, and to 1800, 2000, and 2100°C under reducing ones. Samples were characterized by Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA), High-Resolution XRD, and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). Thermodynamic calculations reproduced accurately the solubility of fission products in the UO2 matrix, and the type and composition of minor oxide and most metallic phases. Calculations also explain metallic phases microstructure as a result of the progressive solidification of liquids. However, some features such as the U-Pd-Rh association could not be reproduced, due to the lack of a thermodynamic model for this ternary system.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that extraction techniques can be efficiently combined with coupling matrix synthesis techniques. An extension of a recently presented method based on a functional decomposition of the scattering matrix is introduced in order to add dangling resonators based on non resonating nodes among possible buildings blocks. This leads to a complete analytical procedure for hybrid realisations including classical N-tuplets, frequency depending couplings, constant phase shifts and NRNs. After detailing some elementary concepts of functional extraction techniques for NRN's, a synthesis and design example is presented to illustrate the approach.

Abstract: Scientific projects frequently involve measurements of thermophysical, thermochemical, and other related properties of chemical compounds and materials. These measured property data have significant potential value for the scientific community, but incomplete and inaccurate reporting often hampers their utilization. The present IUPAC Technical Report summarizes the needs of chemical engineers and researchers as consumers of these data and shows how publishing practices can improve information transfer. In the Report, general principles of Good Reporting Practice are developed together with examples illustrating typical cases of reporting issues. Adoption of these principles will improve the quality, reproducibility, and usefulness of experimental data, bring a better level of consistency to results, and increase the efficiency and impact of research. Closely related to Good Reporting Practice, basic elements of Good Research Practice are also introduced with a goal to reduce the number of ambiguities and unresolved problems within the thermophysical property data domain.

Abstract: The Thermodynamics of Advanced Fuels – International Database (TAF-ID) was developed using the Calphad method to provide a computational tool to perform thermodynamic calculations on nuclear fuel materials under normal and off-normal conditions. Different kinds of fuels are considered: oxide, metallic, carbide and nitride fuels. Many fission products are introduced as well as structural materials (e.g., zirconium, steel, concrete, SiC) and absorbers (e.g., B4C), in order to investigate the thermochemistry of irradiated fuels and to predict their chemical interaction with the surrounding materials. The approach to develop the database and the models implemented in the database are described. Examples of models for key chemical systems are presented. Finally, a few examples of application calculations on severe accidents with UO2 fuels, irradiated fuel chemistry of MOX and metallic fuels and metallic fuel/cladding interaction show how this tool can be used. To validate the database, the calculations are compared to the available experimental data. A good agreement is obtained which gives confidence in the maturity degree and quality of the TAF-ID database. The working version is only accessible to the participants of the TAF-ID project (Canada, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Republic of Korea, United Kingdom, USA). A public version is accessible by all the NEA countries. The current version contains models on the Am–Fe, Am–Np, Am-O-Pu, Am–U, Am–Zr, C–O–U-Pu, Cr–U, Np–U, Np–Zr, O–U–Zr, Re–U, Ru–U, Si–U, Ti–U, U-Pu-Zr, U–W systems. Abstract: International audience; The chemical behaviour of the main elements present in a PWR irradiated fuel sample (UO$_2$ fuel, Zr from the Zircaloy-cladding, Pu, Np, and fission products such as Ba, Ce, Cs, Gd, I, La, Mo, Nd, Pd, Rh, Ru, Sr, Tc, Te, etc.) submitted to a nuclear severe accident type sequence (VERDON-1 experiment) has been investigated by thermodynamic calculations using the TAF-ID database. Particular emphasis has been placed on the chemical behaviour of the fission products Ba, Cs, Mo, and Zr, and the interactions between the Zircaloy-cladding and the UO$_2$ matrix. Calculation results have been compared to experimental observations completed during the VERDON-1 experiment (instantaneous release of fission products and final chemical state of elements in the sample). Results presented in this manuscript do not account for non-equilibrium phenomena that have a major impact on fission product behaviour (e.g., chemical diffusion, mass transport induced by temperature gradients in the fuel pellet, etc.). None the less, these TAF-ID calculations have described accurately the melting of the sample following the formation of a mixed (U,Zr)O$_2$-x phase because of the interaction between the fuel and the Zircaloy-cladding. Furthermore, calculations have assisted in the explanation of the instantaneous released fractions observed for Ba and Mo during the experiment (as a function of the experiment atmosphere and temperature).

Abstract: NU Ori is a massive spectroscopic and visual binary in the Orion Nebula Cluster, with 4 components: Aa, Ab, B, and C. The B0.5 primary (Aa) is one of the most massive B-type stars reported to host a magnetic field. We report the detection of a spectroscopic contribution from the C component in high-resolution ESPaDOnS spectra, which is also detected in a Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) dataset. Radial velocity (RV) measurements of the inner binary (designated Aab) yield an orbital period of 14.3027(7) d. The orbit of the third component (designated C) was constrained using both RVs and interferometry. We find C to be on a mildly eccentric 476(1) d orbit. Thanks to spectral disentangling of mean line profiles obtained via least-squares deconvolution we show that the Zeeman Stokes $V$ signature is clearly associated with C, rather than Aa as previously assumed. The physical parameters of the stars were constrained using both orbital and evolutionary models, yielding $M_{\rm Aa} = 14.9 \pm 0.5 M_\odot$, $M_{\rm Ab} = 3.9 \pm 0.7 M_\odot$, and $M_{\rm C} = 7.8 \pm 0.7 M_\odot$. The rotational period obtained from longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_z \rangle$ measurements is $P_{\rm rot} = 1.09468(7)$ d, consistent with previous results. Modeling of $\langle B_z \rangle$ indicates a surface dipole magnetic field strength of $\sim 8$ kG. NU Ori C has a magnetic field strength, rotational velocity, and luminosity similar to many other stars exhibiting magnetospheric H$\alpha$ emission, and we find marginal evidence of emission at the expected level ($\sim$1% of the continuum)., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Moreover, we show that if C is a strong partial clone, then the family of all partial subclones of C is of continuum cardinality. Abstract: It was recently claimed that the magnetic O-type star HD 54879 exhibits important radial velocity variability indicative of its presence in a spectroscopic binary. More remarkably, it was furthermore reported that the star underwent a short, sudden variation in spectral type and magnetic field. Abstract: We present the initial results of the Large Impact of magnetic Fields on the Evolution of hot stars (LIFE) project. The focus of this project is the search for magnetic fields in evolved OBA giants and supergiants with visual magnitudes between 4 and 8, with the aim to investigate how the magnetic fields observed in upper main sequence (MS) stars evolve from the MS until the late post-MS stages. In this paper, we present spectropolarimetric observations of 15 stars observed using the ESPaDOnS instrument of the CFHT. For each star, we have determined the fundamental parameters and have used stellar evolution models to calculate their mass, age and radius. Using the LSD technique, we have produced averaged line profiles for each star. From these profiles, we have measured the longitudinal magnetic field strength and have calculated the detection probability. We report the detection of magnetic fields in two stars of our sample: a weak field of $B_l=1.0\pm0.2\,$G is detected in the post-MS A5 star 19$\,$Aur and a stronger field of $B_l=-230\,\pm\,10\,$G is detected in the MS/post-MS B8/9 star HR$\,$3042., 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: International audience; A strong partial clone is a set of partial operations closed under composition and containing all partial projections. Let X be the set of all Boolean strong partial clones whose total operations are the projections. This set is of practical interest since it induces a partial order on the complexity of NP-complete constraint satisfaction problems. In this paper we study X from the algebraic point of view, and prove that there exists two intervals in X , corresponding to natural constraint satisfaction problems, such that one is at least countably infinite and the other has the cardinality of the continuum.

Abstract: Until recently almost nothing was known about the evolution of magnetic fields found in upper main sequence Ap/Bp stars during their long main sequence lifetime. We are thus studying magnetic Ap/Bp stars in open clusters in order to obtain observational evidence of how the properties of Ap/Bp magnetic stars, such as field strength and structure, evolve with age during the main sequence. One important aspect of this study is to search for the very rare examples of hot magnetic stars in short-period binary systems among magnetic cluster members. In this paper we characterize the object BD-19~5044L, which is both a member of the open cluster IC 4725 = M~25, and a short-period SB2 system containing a magnetic primary star. We have obtained a series of intensity and circular polarisation spectra distributed through the orbital and rotation cycles of BD-19 5044L with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT. We find that the orbit of BD-19 5044L AB is quite eccentric (e = 0.477), with a period of 17.63 d. The primary is a magnetic Bp star with a variable longitudinal magnetic field, a polar field strength of ~1400 G and a low obliquity, while the secondary is probably a hot Am star and does not appear to be magnetic. The rotation period of the primary (5.04 d) is not synchronised with the orbit, but the rotation angular velocity is close to being synchronised with the orbital angular velocity of the secondary at periastron, perhaps as a result of tidal interactions. The periastron separation is small enough (about 12 times the radius of the primary star) that BD-19 5044L may be one of the very rare known cases of a tidally interacting SB2 binary system containing a magnetic Ap/Bp star., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: D. Lau raised the problem of determining the cardinality of the set of all partial clones of Boolean functions whose total part is a given Boolean clone. The key step in the solution of this problem, which was obtained recently by the authors, was to show that the sublattice of strong partial clones on $$\{0, 1\}$$ that contain all total functions preserving the relation $${\rho_{0,2} = \{(0, 0), (0, 1), (1, 0)\}}$$ is of continuum cardinality. In this paper, we represent relations derived from $${\rho_{0,2}}$$ in terms of graphs, and we define a suitable closure operator on graphs such that the lattice of closed sets of graphs is isomorphic to the dual of this uncountable sublattice of strong partial clones. With the help of this duality, we provide a rough description of the structure of this lattice, and we also obtain a new proof for its uncountability.

Abstract: International audience; This paper describes the Third Public Data Release (DR3) of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. Sciencegrade quality data for 667 galaxies are made public, including the 200 galaxies of the Second Public Data Release (DR2). Data were obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory. Three different spectral setups are available, i) a low-resolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3745–7500 Å (4240-7140 Å unvignetted) with a spectral resolution of 6.0 Å (FWHM), for 646 galaxies, ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650–4840 Å (3650-4620 Å unvignetted) with a spectral resolution of 2.3 Å (FWHM), for 484 galaxies, and iii) the combination of the cubes from both setups (called COMBO), with a spectral resolution of 6.0 Å and a wavelength range between 3700-7500 Å (3700-7140 Å unvignetted), for 446 galaxies. The Main Sample, selected and observed according to the CALIFA survey strategy covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, spans the color-magnitude diagram and probes a wide range of stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. The Extension Sample covers several types of galaxies that are rare in the overall galaxy population and therefore not numerous or absent in the CALIFA Main Sample. All the cubes in the data release were processed using the latest pipeline, which includes improved versions of the calibration frames and an even further improved image reconstruction quality. In total, the third data release contains 1576 datacubes, including ∼1.5 million independent spectra. It is available at http://califa.caha.es/DR3.

Abstract: We present our analysis of HD~35502 based on high- and medium-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Our results indicate that the magnetic B5IVsnp star is the primary component of a spectroscopic triple system and that it has an effective temperature of $18.4\pm0.6\,{\rm kK}$, a mass of $5.7\pm0.6\,M_\odot$, and a polar radius of $3.0^{+1.1}_{-0.5}\,R_\odot$. The two secondary components are found to be essentially identical A-type stars for which we derive effective temperatures ($8.9\pm0.3\,{\rm kK}$), masses ($2.1\pm0.2\,M_\odot$), and radii ($2.1\pm0.4\,R_\odot$). We infer a hierarchical orbital configuration for the system in which the secondary components form a tight binary with an orbital period of $5.66866(6)\,{\rm d}$ that orbits the primary component with a period of over $40\,{\rm yrs}$. Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) profiles reveal Zeeman signatures in Stokes $V$ indicative of a longitudinal magnetic field produced by the B star ranging from approximately $-4$ to $0\,{\rm kG}$ with a median uncertainty of $0.4\,{\rm kG}$. These measurements, along with the line variability produced by strong emission in H$\alpha$, are used to derive a rotational period of $0.853807(3)\,{\rm d}$. We find that the measured $v\sin{i}=75\pm5\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$ of the B star then implies an inclination angle of the star's rotation axis to the line of sight of $24^{+6}_{-10}\degree$. Assuming the Oblique Rotator Model, we derive the magnetic field strength of the B star's dipolar component ($14^{+9}_{-3}\,{\rm kG}$) and its obliquity ($63\pm13\degree$). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the calculated Alfv\'{e}n radius ($41^{+17}_{-6}\,R_\ast$) and Kepler radius ($2.1^{+0.4}_{-0.7}\,R_\ast$) place HD~35502's central B star well within the regime of centrifugal magnetosphere-hosting stars., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: International audience; A self-adaptive heuristic that incorporates a variable level of perturbation, a novel local search and a learning mechanism is proposed to solve the p-centre problem in the continuous space. Empirical results, using several large TSP-Lib data sets, some with over 1300 customers with various values of p, show that our proposed heuristic is both effective and efficient. This perturbation metaheuristic compares favourably against the optimal method on small size instances. For larger instances the algorithm outperforms both a multi-start heuristic and a discrete-based optimal approach while performing well against a recent powerful VNS approach. This is a self-adaptive method that can easily be adopted to tackle other combinatorial/global optimisation problems. For benchmarking purposes, the medium size instances with 575nodes are solved optimally for the first time, though requiring a large amount of computational time. As a by-product of this research, we also report for the first time the optimal solution of the vertex p-centre problem for these TSP-Lib data sets.

Abstract: The study of partial clones on $\mathbf{2}:=\{0,1\}$ was initiated by R. V. Freivald. In his fundamental paper published in 1966, Freivald showed, among other things, that the set of all monotone partial functions and the set of all self-dual partial functions are both maximal partial clones on $\mathbf{2}$. Several papers dealing with intersections of maximal partial clones on $\mathbf{2}$ have appeared after Freivald work. It is known that there are infinitely many partial clones that contain the set of all monotone self-dual partial functions on $\mathbf{2}$, and the problem of describing them all was posed by some authors. Abstract: International audience; The present letter studies the impact of electromagnetic mutual coupling on the near fields of generic antenna systems. The main objective here is to derive an upper bound on near-fields deviations caused by mutual coupling. The method transforms the problem of near-field coupling from the near zone to the recently introduced antenna current Green's function defined on the antenna itself. Through this upper bound, the formulation presented here can be used to develop automatic algorithms for the design of coupled antenna systems with optimum near-field performance. Numerical examples involving linear wire arrays are given to demonstrate and confirm the approach proposed here.

Abstract: A small fraction of the population of intermediate-mass and massive stars host strong and stable magnetic fields organised on large scales. These fields are believed to be remnants of star formation. It is however not clear how such fossil fields have been shaped during their formation and subsequent evolution. Abstract: The contribution of this article is twofold: the adaptation and application of models of deception from psychology, combined with data-mining techniques, to the text of speeches given by candidates in the 2008 U.S. presidential election; and the observation of both short-term andmedium-term differences in the levels of deception. Rather than considering the effect of deception on voters, deception is used as a lens through which to observe the self-perceptions of candidates and campaigns. The method of analysis is fully automated and requires no human coding, and so can be applied to many other domains in a straightforward way. The authors posit explanations for the observed variation in terms of a dynamic tension between the goals of campaigns at each moment in time, for example gaps between their view of the candidate’s persona and the persona expected for the position; and the difficulties of crafting and sustaining a persona, for example, the cognitive cost and the need for apparent continuity with past actions and perceptions. The changes in the resulting balance provide a new channel by which to understand the drivers of political campaigning, a channel that is hard to manipulate because its markers are created subconsciously.

Abstract: International audience; The purpose of the present paper is to introduce new method for designing electrically-small antennas with optimum directivity. A sphere with small radius compared to the wavelength contains a distribution of infinitesimal point sources. Global optimization is used to find the best current on the small antenna enclosed within this sphere capable of providing the optimum directivity. The results presented in this paper are compared with the antenna directivity limit for small antennas found in the literature.

Abstract: This paper presents a new approach to extract the physical poles of antennas. The singularity expansion method (SEM) allows modeling the antenna backscattering using poles which are theoretically independent of the wave incident angle, making them useful for antenna identification. Nevertheless, only the physical poles respect this property while the spurious poles change for each incident angle. Indeed, we call the poles linked to the antenna itself as “physical” and the poles linked to anything but the antenna as “spurious”(excitation, noise, etc.). The goal of this paper is to highlight the method to define the optimal time windowing applied on the antenna backscattering in order to obtain the physical poles of the antenna. The approach is based on the window decreasing technique (WDT) and the window increasing technique. The SEM is applied on the backscattered field measured in the boresight direction of three antennas: 1) a narrowband patch antenna; 2) a wideband helix antenna; and 3) a UWB antenna. Using these poles to reconstruct the field backscattered in several directions, we show that the poles extracted from one direction with this new approach are relevant to reconstruct the backscattered field for any other directions. Moreover, we show that these poles can be extracted directly from these other directions.

Abstract: International audience; An h-ary relation ρ on a finite set A is said to be hereditarily rigid if the unary partial functions on A that preserve ρ are the subfunctions of the identity map or of constant maps. A family of relations F is said to be hereditarily strongly rigid if the partial functions on A that preserve every ρ ∈ F are the subfunctions of projections or constant functions. In this paper we show that hereditarily rigid relations exist and we give a lower bound on their arities. We also prove that no finite hereditarily strongly rigid families of relations exist and we also construct an infinite hereditarily strongly rigid family of relations.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with modelling the Antenna Current Green's Function (ACGF) using the Singularity Expansion Method (SEM). The ACGF is the exact transfer function of an antenna in the spatial domain and is able to deal with both near and far fields. In order to study the spectral content of the ACGF, the authors suggest here applying the SEM on the ACGF to extract its poles (characteristic modes). Abstract: International audience; In case of a severe accident, the phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the corium which designates the complex mixture formed by chemical interaction at high temperature between different fuel and structural materials in the reactor have to be predicted. CALPHAD is a suitable method to develop a thermodynamic database to investigate such complex materials containing a large number of elements. New advanced computational tools will be presented in this work: (i) the Open Calphad Software (www.opencalphad.com) developed by B. Sundman, which is an open source code to perform thermodynamic calculations by Gibbs energy minimization; (ii) the FUELBASE database, developed at the CEA since 2005, which allows calculations on complex corium compositions to be performed; and (iii) the TAF-ID (Thermodynamics of Advanced Fuels – International Database) database, which is an OECD/NEA project (www.oecd-nea.org/science/taf-id) launched in 2013 to develop a thermodynamic database on nuclear fuel materials in the framework of an international collaboration between Canada, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Korea and the United States of America.

Abstract: We investigate the magnetic field at the surface of 48 red giants selected as promising for detection of Stokes V Zeeman signatures in their spectral lines. We use the spectropolarimeters Narval and ESPaDOnS to detect circular polarization within the photospheric absorption lines of our targets and use the least-squares deconvolution (LSD) method. We also measure the classical S-index activity indicator, and the stellar radial velocity. To infer the evolutionary status of our giants and to interpret our results, we use state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary models with predictions of convective turnover times. We unambiguously detect magnetic fields via Zeeman signatures in 29 of the 48 red giants in our sample. Zeeman signatures are found in all but one of the 24 red giants exhibiting signs of activity, as well as 6 out of 17 bright giant stars.The majority of the magnetically detected giants are either in the first dredge up phase or at the beginning of core He burning, i.e. phases when the convective turnover time is at a maximum: this corresponds to a 'magnetic strip' for red giants in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. A close study of the 16 giants with known rotational periods shows that the measured magnetic field strength is tightly correlated with the rotational properties, namely to the rotational period and to the Rossby number Ro. Our results show that the magnetic fields of these giants are produced by a dynamo. Four stars for which the magnetic field is measured to be outstandingly strong with respect to that expected from the rotational period/magnetic field relation or their evolutionary status are interpreted as being probable descendants of magnetic Ap stars. Abstract: Important insights into the formation, structure, evolution and environment of all types of stars can be obtained through the measurement of their winds and possible magnetospheres. However, this has hardly been done up to now mainly because of the lack of UV instrumentation available for long periods of time. To reach this aim, we have designed UVMag, an M-size space mission equipped with a high-resolution spectropolarimeter working in the UV and visible spectral range. The UV domain is crucial in stellar physics as it is very rich in atomic and molecular lines and contains most of the flux of hot stars. Moreover, covering the UV and visible spectral domains at the same time will allow us to study the star and its environment simultaneously. Adding polarimetric power to the spectrograph will multiply tenfold the capabilities of extracting information on stellar magnetospheres, winds, disks, and magnetic fields. Examples of science objectives that can be reached with UVMag are presented for pre-main sequence, main sequence and evolved stars. They will cast new light onto stellar physics by addressing many exciting and important questions. UVMag is currently undergoing a Research and Technology study and will be proposed at the forthcoming ESA call for M-size missions. In this paper we give an alternative proof to this result by making use of a representation of relations derived from {(0,0),(0,1),(1,0)} in terms of certain types of graphs. As a by-product, this tool brings some light into the understanding of the structure of this uncountable sublattice of strong partial clones.

Abstract: We report the detection of a magnetic field on the Of?p star HD108. Spectropolarimetric observations conducted in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively with NARVAL@TBL and ESPaDOnS@CFHT reveal a clear Zeeman signature in the average Stokes V profile, stable on timescales of days to months and slowly increasing in amplitude on timescales of years. We speculate that this timescale is the same as that on which Ha emission is varying and is equal to the rotation period of the star. The corresponding longitudinal magnetic field, measured during each of the three seasons, increases slowly from 100 to 150G, implying that the polar strength of the putatively-dipolar large-scale magnetic field of HD108 is at least 0.5kG and most likely of the order of 1-2 kG. The stellar and wind properties are derived through a quantitative spectroscopic analysis with the code CMFGEN. The effective temperature is difficult to constrain because of the unusually strong HeI4471 and HeI5876 lines. Values in the range 33000-37000 K are preferred. A mass loss rate of about 1e-7 Msun/yr (with a clumping factor f=0.01) and a wind terminal velocity of 2000 km/s are derived. The wind confinement parameter eta_star is larger than 100, implying that the wind of HD108 is magnetically confined. Stochastic short-term variability is observed in the wind-sensitive lines but not in the photospheric lines, excluding the presence of pulsations. Material infall in the confined wind is the most likely origin for lines formed in the inner wind. Wind-clumping also probably causes part of the Ha variability. The projected rotational velocity of HD108 is lower than 50 km/s, consistent with the spectroscopic and photometric variation timescales of a few decades. Abstract: International audience; Building interactive software is a notoriously complex task, for which many programming tools have been proposed over the years. Although the research community has sporadically identified usability requirements for such tools, tool proponents rarely document their design processes and there is no established reference for comparing tools with requirements. Furthermore, the design of most tools is strongly influenced by the design of their underlying general purpose programming languages. These in turn were designed from their own set of little-documented requirements, which adds to the confusion. In this paper, we provide a review and classification of the requirements and properties expected of interactive development tools. We review how designers of APIs and toolkits for interaction-oriented systems set the usability requirements for the programming interface of their systems. We relate our analysis to other studies in related domains such as end-user programming, natural programming, and teaching.
