A new multi-pinhole Faraday cup (MPFC) device was designed, fabricated and tested to measure ion beam uniformity over a range of centimeters. There are 32 collectors within the device, and each of those is used as an individual Faraday cup to measure a fraction of the beam current. Experimental data show that the device is capable of measuring a charged particles distribution - either in the form of a raster scanned focused beam or a defocused beam.

Electrical insulation breakdown between conductor and coil parts and structures is a limiting factor in the performance of high-field magnets. We have evaluated various insulation coatings for possible application in both Nb3Sn and Bi-2212 coil fabrication. Such coatings must be robust to maintain structural integrity and provide adequate voltage standoff after the wind-and-react coil fabrication process. Such processes are characterized by reaction temperatures of 650°C in an inert atmosphere for Nb3Sn and 890°C in a pure oxygen atmosphere for Bi-2212, and down to cryogenic temperatures when coils are in service. We present a method of testing standardized samples and report the performance characteristics of oxide layers produced (or applied) by plasma-spray, surface conversion, and "paintable" coatings in common areas of voltage breakdown in coil parts. We also address material compatibility and durability during high-temperature heat treatment and cryogenic shock. Suitable coatings selected in the testing process will be instrumental in improving the performance of future wind-and-react coils. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Intense beams of heavy ions are capable of delivering precise and uniform beam energy deposition, with the capability to heat volumetric samples of any solid-phase target material to high energy density. The WDM conditions are achieved by combined longitudinal and transverse space-charge neutralized drift compression of the ion beam to provide a hot spot on the target with a beam spot size of about 1 mm. Initial experiments use a 0.3 MeV, 30-mA K+ beam from the NDCX-I accelerator to heat foil targets such as Au, Pt, W, Al and Si. The NDCX-1 beam contains a low-intensity uncompressed pulse up to >10 mu s of intensity ~;0.4 MW/cm2, and a high-intensity compressed pulse (FWHM 2-3 ns and fluence ~;4 mJ). WDM experiments heat targets by both the compressed and uncompressed parts of the NDCX-I beam, and explore measurement of temperature, droplet formation and other target parameters. Future plans include target experiments using the NDCX-II accelerator, which is designed to heat targets at the Bragg peak using a 2-3 MeV lithium ion beam.

: Introduction: The UNAIDS 90‐90‐90 targets for the cascade of care are widely used to monitor the success of HIV care programmes but there are few studies in children. We assessed the cascade for children and adolescents living with HIV in the national Collaborative HIV Paediatric Study (CHIPS) in the UK and Ireland. Methods: Utilizing longitudinal data from CHIPS we compared the cascade of care for 2010, 2013 and 2016. Among children diagnosed with HIV and not known to be lost to follow‐up at the start of each calendar year, we summarized the proportion in active paediatric care during that year (defined as having ≥1 clinic visit, CD4 or viral load measurement, or change to antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen), and of these, the proportion on ART at last visit in that year. Among those on ART, the proportion with viral suppression ( Results: Of children in paediatric HIV care at the start of 2010, 2013 and 2016 (n = 1249, 1157, 905 respectively), the proportion in active care during that calendar year was high throughout at 97 to 99%. Of those in active care, the proportion on ART increased from 79% to 85% and 92% respectively (p < 0.001). Among those on ART, the proportion with viral suppression and good immune status was stable at 83% to 86% and 85% to 88%, respectively, across the years. Among children in care in 2016, those aged ≥15 years were less likely to be virally suppressed (79% vs. 91%, p < 0.001) or to have good immune status (78% vs. 94%, p < 0.001) compared to younger children; there were no differences by place of birth or sex. Conclusions: Children and adolescents in the UK and Ireland national cohort had high retention in care. The proportion on ART increased significantly over time although there was no change in viral suppression or good immune status. In this paper, we report the effect of introducing molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nano-platelets: a two-dimensional metal chalcogenide, on the mechanical properties of hollow glass microballoon (HGM)–epoxy syntactic foams. MoS2 reinforced syntactic foams were prepared by mixing MoS2 nanoplatelets to epoxy containing HGMs; with the amount of MoS2 being varied from 0.01 to 0.04% v/v, while maintaining a constant total filler volume fraction of 40% for all compositions. The mechanical behaviour of reinforced syntactic foam was studied under varied loadings including compressive, tensile and flexural under different strain rate regimes. Introduction of MoS2 led to significant improvements in characteristic mechanical properties, particularly in terms of compressive strength and toughness, which suggest intercalation of MoS2 within the epoxy matrix; however, the presence of relatively larger MoS2 micro particles couldn't be completely negated. The toughness of the foam, as indicated by the area under the compressive stress-strain curve, was found to increase by ∼21% under optimal conditions. Background: With the emergence of new variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, such as the Omicron variant, during the third wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there was a need to identify useful homeopathic medicines. This study aimed to identify such medicines and their indications using prognostic factor research (PFR)., Methods: This was an open-label, multi-centred observational study conducted in January 2022, on confirmed COVID-19 cases. The data were collected from integrated COVID Care Centres in Delhi, India, where homeopathic medicines were prescribed along with conventional treatment. Only those cases that met a set of selection criteria were considered for analysis. The likelihood ratio (LR) was calculated for the frequently occurring symptoms of the frequently prescribed medicines. An LR of 1.3 or greater was considered meaningful., Results: Out of the 362 COVID-19 cases, 263 cases were selected for analysis after applying selection criteria. Common symptoms included fatigue, cough, sore throat, myalgia and headache. Twenty-one medicines were prescribed, of which nine medicines - Gelsemium sempervirens , Bryonia alba , Hepar sulphuris , Rhus toxicodendron , Pulsatilla nigricans , Arsenicum album , Belladonna , Nux vomica and Phosphorus - were frequently used. By calculating LRs, the study identified meaningful indications for these medicines., Conclusion: Homeopathic medicines have shown promising results in the third wave of COVID-19 as an adjunct therapy. The medicines that were used in the first and second waves were found useful in the third wave also, and their indications were analogous to those found in the earlier waves. Certain new indications of some medicines were elicited in this wave, which warrant further research. Biochar produced from wood residues may provide a new method and material for managing the environment, particularly in terms of carbon sequestration and contaminant remediation. Additionally, biochar produced from wood residues is free of chemical fertilizers, likewise in rice straw, wheat straw, corn straw, etc. This study investigated the removal of iron from aqueous solutions by a novel low-cost and eco-friendly biochar made from hardwood trees and modified by adding MgCl 2 for effective phosphate removal. Optimal adsorption conditions were determined through studies of adsorption time, pH, and adsorbent dosage. Batch equilibrium isotherm and kinetic experiments and pre/post-adsorption characterizations using FESEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR suggested that the presence of carboxyl group elements and colloidal and nano-sized MgO (periclase) particles on the biochar surface were the main adsorption sites for aqueous iron and phosphate respectively. In this study, the HW and MgO-HW biochar showed excellent Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm (D-R) maximum adsorption capacities of 289.45 and 828.82 mg/g for iron and phosphate. The kinetic study for iron and phosphate adsorption was described well by pseudo second-order model and pseudo second-order model respectively. The HW biochar and the prepared MgO-HW biochar exhibited commendable iron adsorption (98.25%) performance at 10 pH units and phosphate (96.22%) at pH 6 respectively. Thus, this research reveals a waste-to-wealth strategy by converting hardwood waste into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent Fe and P adsorption capabilities and environmental adaptability., (© 2024. Anemia is highly prevalent globally, especially in young children in low-income countries, where it often overlaps with a high burden of diarrheal disease. Distribution of iron interventions (as supplements or iron-containing multiple micronutrient powders, MNPs) is a key anemia reduction strategy. Small studies in Africa indicate iron may reprofile the gut microbiome towards pathogenic species. We seek to evaluate the safety of iron and MNPs based on their effects on diversity, composition, and function of the gut microbiome in children in rural Bangladesh as part of a large placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial of iron or MNPs given for 3 months (ACTRN12617000660381). In 923 infants, we evaluate the microbiome before, immediately following, and nine months after interventions, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and shotgun metagenomics in a subset. We identify no increase in diarrhea with either treatment. In our primary analysis, neither iron nor MNPs alter gut microbiome diversity or composition. However, when not adjusting for multiple comparisons, compared to placebo, children receiving iron and MNPs exhibit reductions in commensal species (e.g., Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus) and increases in potential pathogens, including Clostridium. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a major cause of peptic ulcer disease (PUD), which needs effective eradication of the organism to heal ulcers and prevent a recurrence. In recent years, increasing resistance of H. pylori to clarithromycin and amoxicillin have decreased peptic ulcer cure rate following treatment with standard triple therapy worldwide. The addition of probiotics with standard triple therapy has shown excellent efficacy in H. pylori eradication and has appeared to be an alternative treatment strategy. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of standard triple therapy plus probiotics for H. pylori eradication and ulcer healing compared to standard triple therapy alone. This double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial included 158 with endoscopically proven H. pylori-positive PUD who were randomly allocated equally into two groups; Group A was treated with standard triple therapy plus probiotics, and Group B was treated with standard triple therapy plus placebo for 14 days. The outcome was evaluated at the end of treatment (14th day) (symptoms plus adverse events) and after 60 days of treatment completion (H. pylori eradication and ulcer healing). One hundred forty four (144) study subjects (73 in Group A and 71 in Group B) completed the study. Significantly higher H. pylori eradication rate (82.2%vs. 67.6%, p=0.043) and ulcer healing rate (92.3% vs. 60.0%, p=0.049) were observed in the standard triple therapy plus probiotic group than the standard triple therapy plus placebo group. Early relief of epigastric pain was also seen among patients getting probiotics than the placebo in addition to standard triple therapy (42.3% vs. 15.1%, p<0.001).The addition of probiotics significantly improves the H. pylori eradication rate and ulcer healing rate among the patients getting standard triple therapy. Further large-scale, multi-center studies are needed to recommend routine use of probiotics with standard triple therapy for H. pylori eradication.

Leishmania donovani relies on specific vitamins and cofactors crucial for its survival and pathogenesis. Tailoring therapies to disrupt these pathways offers a promising strategy for the treatment of Visceral Leishmaniasis. Current treatment regimens are limited due to drug resistance and high costs. The dependency of Leishmania parasites on Vitamin B 2 and its metabolic products is not known. In this study, we have biochemically and biophysically characterized a Vitamin B 2 metabolism enzyme, riboflavin kinase from L. donovani (LdRFK) which converts riboflavin (vitamin B 2 ) into flavin mononucleotide (FMN). Sequence comparison with human counterpart reflects 31.58 % identity only, thus opening up the possibility of exploring it as drug target. The rfk gene was cloned, expressed and the recombinant protein was purified. Kinetic parameters of LdRFK were evaluated with riboflavin and ATP as substrates which showed differential binding affinity when compared with the human RFK enzyme. Thermal and denaturant stability of the enzyme was evaluated. The rfk gene was overexpressed in the parasites and its role in growth and cell cycle was evaluated. In the absence of crystal structure, homology modelling and molecular dynamic simulation studies were performed to predict LdRFK structure. The data shows differences in substrate binding between human and parasite enzyme. This raises the possibility of exploring LdRFK for specific designing of antileishmanial molecules. Starch-based biofilms are biodegradable, but their application is limited by lower mechanical strength and absence of antimicrobial properties. In this context, the present study attempted to unleash the potential of nanotechnology for synthesizing nano-starch (NS) and tannic acid-coated nano-starch (T-NS) for augmenting the tensile strength and antimicrobial properties of starch-based biofilms. Moreover, this study reports one of the first such attempts to improve the commercial viability of starch extracted from the corms of Amorphophallus paeoniifolius. In this study, NS and T-NS samples were first synthesized by the physical and chemical modification of the native starch (S) molecules. The NS and T-NS samples showed significantly smaller granule size, lower moisture content, and swelling power. Further, amendments with NS and T-NS samples (25 % and 50 %) to the native starch molecules were performed to obtain biofilm samples. The NSB (NS amended) and T-NSB (T-NS amended) biofilms showed comparatively higher tensile strength than SB films (100 % starch-based). The T-NSB showed greater antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. All the biofilms showed almost complete biodegradation in soil (in 10 days). Investigating disease progression, transmission of infection and impacts of Multidrug Therapy (MDT) to inhibit demyelination in leprosy involves a certain amount of difficulty in terms of the in-built uncertain complicated and complex intracellular cell dynamical interactions. To tackle this scenario and to elucidate a more realistic, rationalistic approach of examining the infection mechanism and associated drug therapeutic interventions, we propose a four-dimensional ordinary differential equation-based model. Stochastic processes has been employed on this deterministic system by formulating the Kolmogorov forward equation introducing a transition state and the quasi-stationary distribution, exact distribution analysis have been investigated which allow us to estimate an expected time to extinction of the infected Schwann cells into the human body more prominently. Additionally, to explore the impact of uncertainty in the key intracellular factors, the stochastic system is investigated incorporating random perturbations and environmental noises in the disease dissemination, proliferation and reinfection rates. Rigorous numerical simulations validating the analytical outcomes provide us significant novel insights on the progression of leprosy and unravelling the existing major treatment complexities. Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious, immune-mediated skin disorder. Inflammation of the skin's surface is characterised by scaly white, red, or silvery spots that occur due to the hyper-proliferation of keratinocytes in the epidermal layer. Primarily, pharmaceutical drugs or immune therapy are used to treat psoriasis. We are all aware that, certain therapeutic strategies can have some adverse effects, and over time, that hidden inflammation may manifest. This article introduces a mathematical model for psoriasis, formulated by employing a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that describe the densities of T-cells, dendritic cells (DCs), keratinocytes, and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) as basic cell populations. A tumor necrosis factor- α ( T N F - α ) inhibitor has been imposed from the initial stage of the treatment regime, using the optimal control theoretic approach, and the numerical results have been observed. After 80 days of monitoring using only biologic T N F - α inhibitors, if this approach did not provide the intended outcomes (when severity arises), stem cells are administered a few times in a pulsed manner as a cell replacement technique in addition to this anti T N F - α medicine. We have observed the combined therapeutic benefit of stem cell replacement with a T N F - α inhibitor from a mathematical point of view. Biodiesel, an alternative to diesel, is produced through the enzymatic transesterification of vegetable oil or animal fats. Enzymatic transesterification of oil is gaining more importance, as this method possesses no such disadvantages that are associated with the chemical process. Temperature is the most important factor in enzymatic transesterification for biodiesel synthesis. In this study, a mathematical model is developed to understand the effects of temperature on the enzymatic transesterification of Jatropha curcas oil. Reaction rates are expressed as a function of temperature using an appropriate function, and the effects of temperature on the overall enzymatic system are investigated using the mathematical model. A suitable temperature is determined using the mathematical model, keeping the other reaction conditions unchanged that gives maximum yield. Furthermore, an optimal control problem (OCP) is formulated to identify the temperature control strategy that maximizes the biodiesel yield while minimizing production costs. Simulated outcomes obtained from the mathematical model are analogized with the experimental results to make them acceptable. Preserving a functional mitochondrial network is crucial for cellular well-being, considering the pivotal role of mitochondria in ensuring cellular survival, especially under stressful conditions. Mitophagy, the selective removal of damaged mitochondria through autophagy, plays a pivotal role in preserving cellular homeostasis by preventing the production of harmful reactive oxygen species from dysfunctional mitochondria. While the involvement of mitophagy in neurodegenerative diseases has been thoroughly investigated, it is becoming increasingly evident that mitophagy plays a significant role in cancer biology. Perturbations in mitophagy pathways lead to suboptimal mitochondrial quality control, catalyzing various aspects of carcinogenesis, including establishing metabolic plasticity, stemness, metabolic reconfiguration of cancer-associated fibroblasts, and immunomodulation. While mitophagy performs a delicate balancing act at the intersection of cell survival and cell death, mounting evidence indicates that, particularly in the context of stress responses induced by cancer therapy, it predominantly promotes cell survival. Here, we showcase an overview of the current understanding of the role of mitophagy in cancer biology and its potential as a target for cancer therapy. Given the growing global demand for seafood, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive study on the prevalence and persistence patterns of pathogenic bacteria and viruses associated with specific seafood varieties. This assessment thoroughly examines the safety of seafood products, considering the diverse processing methods employed in the industry. The importance of understanding the behavior of foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Clostridium botulinum, Listeria monocytogenes, human norovirus, and hepatitis A virus, is emphasized by recent cases of gastroenteritis outbreaks linked to contaminated seafood. This analysis examines outbreaks linked to seafood in the United States and globally, with a particular emphasis on the health concerns posed by pathogenic bacteria and viruses to consumers. Ensuring the safety of seafood is crucial since it directly relates to consumer preferences on sustainability, food safety, provenance, and availability. The review focuses on assessing the frequency, growth, and durability of infections that arise during the processing of seafood. It utilizes next-generation sequencing to identify the bacteria responsible for these illnesses. Additionally, it analyzes methods for preventing and intervening of infections while also considering the forthcoming challenges in ensuring the microbiological safety of seafood products. This evaluation emphasizes the significance of the seafood processing industry in promptly responding to evolving consumer preferences by offering current information on seafood hazards and future consumption patterns. Pyridoxal kinase (PdxK) is a vitamin B 6 salvage pathway enzyme which produces pyridoxal phosphate. We have investigated the impact of PdxK deletion in Leishmania donovani on parasite survivability, infectivity and cellular metabolism. LdPdxK mutants were generated by gene replacement strategy. All mutants showed significant reduction in growth in comparison to wild type. For PdxK mediated biochemical perturbations, only heterozygous mutants and complementation mutants were used as the growth of null mutants were compromised. Heterozygous mutant showed reduction invitro infectivity and higher cytosolic and mitochondrial ROS levels. Glutathione levels decreased significantly in heterozygous mutant indicating its involvement in cellular oxidative metabolism. Pyridoxal kinase gene deletion resulted in reduced ATP levels in parasites and arrest at G 0 /G 1 phase of cell cycle. All these perturbations were rescued by PdxK gene complementation. This is the first report to confirm that LdPdxK plays an indispensable role in cell survival, pathogenicity, redox metabolism and cell cycle progression of L. donovani parasites. This study investigated the synergistic effect of combining flavourzyme, a natural enzyme, and floating electrode-dielectric barrier discharge (FE-DBD) plasma (1.1 kV, 43 kHz, N2 1.5 m/s) treatment, a non-thermal decontamination technology, against Escherichia coli biofilms in squid. E. coli (ATCC 35150 and ATCC 14301) biofilms were formed on the surface of squid and treated with different minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of flavourzyme (1/8; 31.25 μL/mL, 1/4; 62.5 μL/mL, 2/4; 125 μL/mL, and 3/4 MIC; 250 μL/mL) and FE-DBD plasma (5, 10, 30, and 60 min). Independently, flavourzyme and FE-DBD plasma treatment decreased by 0.26-1.71 and 0.19-1.03 log CFU/cm 2 , respectively. The most effective synergistic combination against E. coli biofilms was observed at 3/4 MIC flavourzyme + 60 min FE-DBD plasma exposure, resulting in a reduction of 1.55 log CFU/cm 2 . Furthermore, the combined treatment exhibited higher efficacy in E. coli biofilm inactivation in squid compared to individual treatments. The pH values of the synergistic combinations were not significantly different from those of the untreated samples. The outcomes indicate that the combined treatment with flavourzyme and FE-DBD plasma can effectively provide effective control of E. coli biofilms without causing pH changes in squid. Therefore, our study suggests a new microbial control method for microbial safety in the seafood industry.
