Abstract

The equimolar reaction between 1,9-bis(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)-5,5′-diphenyldipyrromethane, H2L1 or 1,9-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolylmethyl)-5,5′-diethyldipyrromethane, H2L2 and [NiCl2(DME)] in the presence of KH yielded the neutral mononuclear nickel(II) complexes [Ni(L1)-κ4N,N,N,N], 1 and [Ni(L2)-κ4N,N,N,N], 2, respectively. Their X-ray structures revealed the formation of triple chelation by the ligand in both structures with quite different nickel(II)-surrounded square planar geometries owing to the steric difference between –NMe2 and 3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl groups. While the –NMe2 group substituted ligand L1 afforded nickel complex 1 with a plane of symmetry, 3,5-dimethylpyrazole substituted L2 rendered helical chirality in the structure of complex 2. Both the enantiomers (Δ and Λ) of complex 2 were observed in the crystal lattice. Their solution state behaviors were consistent with the solid-state structures as monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Both the enantiomers of complex 2 were present in a dynamic equilibrium in solution and studied by variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy. Similar to the chiral complex, the corresponding ligand H2L2 also exhibited chirality as shown by its crystal structure and the two ligand enantiomers participated in a very fast dynamic interconversion, which became slower upon metalation. 16. Monomeric and dimeric oxidomolybdenum(V and VI) complexes, cytotoxicity, and DNA interaction studies: molybdenum assisted C═N bond cleavage of salophen ligands

Abstract

Four novel dimeric bis-μ-imido bridged metal–metal bonded oxidomolybdenum(V) complexes [MoV2O2L′21–4] (1–4) (where L′1–4 are rearranged ligands formed in situ from H2L1–4) and a new mononuclear dioxidomolybdenum(VI) complex [MoVIO2L5] (5) synthesized from salen type N2O2 ligands are reported. This rare series of imido- bridged complexes (1–4) have been furnished from rearranged H3L′1–4 ligands, containing an aromatic diimine (o-phenylenediamine) “linker”, where Mo assisted hydrolysis followed by −C═N bond cleavage of one of the arms of the ligand H2L1–4 took place. A monomeric molybdenum(V) intermediate species [MoVO(HL′1–4)(OEt)] (Id1–4) was generated in situ. The concomitant deprotonation and dimerization of two molybdenum(V) intermediate species (Id1–4) ultimately resulted in the formation of a bis-μ-imido bridge between the two molybdenum centers of [MoV2O2L′21–4] (1–4). The mechanism of formation of 1–4 has been discussed, and one of the rare intermediate monomeric molybdenum(V) species Id4 has been isolated in the solid state and characterized. The monomeric dioxidomolybdenum(VI) complex [MoVIO2L5] (5) was prepared from the ligand H2L5 where the aromatic “linker” was replaced by an aliphatic diimine (1,2-diaminopropane). All the ligands and complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–vis spectroscopy, NMR, ESI- MS, and cyclic voltammetry, and the structural features of 1, 2, 4, and 5 have been solved by X-ray crystallography. The DNA binding and cleavage activity of 1–5 have been explored. The complexes interact with CT-DNA by the groove binding mode, and the binding constants range between 103 and 104 M–1. Fairly good photoinduced cleavage of pUC19 supercoiled plasmid DNA was exhibited by all the complexes, with 4 showing the most promising photoinduced DNA cleavage activity of ∼93%. Moreover, in vitro cytotoxic activity of all the complexes was evaluated by MTT assay, which reveals that the complexes induce cell death in MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) and HCT-15 (colon cancer) cell lines.

Abstract

Reaction of the thiosemicarbazone ligands, [4-( p -bromophenyl)thiosemicarbazone of salicylaldehyde (H 2 L 1 ), 4-( p -X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazone of o -vanillin {X = F (H 2 L 2 ), X = Cl (H 2 L 3 ) and X = OMe (H 2 L 4 )}, 4-( p -bromophenyl)thiosemicarbazone of 5-bromosalicylaldehyde (H 2 L 5 ), and 4-( p -chlorophenyl)thiosemicarbazone of o -hydroxynaphthaldehyde (H 2 L 6 )] with [MoO 2 (acac) 2 ] afforded a series of new oxidomolybdenum(VI) complexes [Mo (VI) O 2 L 1–6 (solv)] ( 1 – 6 ) {where solv (solvent) = DMSO ( 1 , 3 , 5 & 6 ) and H 2 O ( 2 & 4 )}. The molecular structures of 2 and 3 were determined by X-ray crystallography, demonstrating the dibasic tridentate behavior of ligands. The cyclic voltammogram pattern is similar for 1 – 6 , which includes two irreversible reduction processes within the potential window −0.71 to −0.66 V and −0.92 to −0.85 V corresponding to the metal centered reduction from Mo (VI) /Mo (V) and Mo (V) /Mo (IV) respectively. Catalytic potential of 1 – 6 was tested for the oxidation of styrene and cyclohexene. The effect of various parameters such as the amount of catalyst, oxidant, NaHCO 3 , and solvent was checked to optimize the conditions for the best performance of the catalyst. 100% product selectivity for the formation of cyclohexene oxide from cyclohexene and ∼98–99% product selectivity for the oxidation of styrene to styrene oxide was observed. Abstract

The solution behavior of structurally characterized [VVO(OEt)(L)] complexes, which transform into the corresponding divanadium(V,V) compounds [{VVO(L)}₂-μ-O], is reported. Upon controlled potential electrolysis, the corresponding [(L)V₂O₃(L)]⁻ mixed-valence species are obtained upon partial reduction of the [(VVOL)₂-μ-O] formed in solution. All compounds are characterized in the solid state and solution by spectroscopic techniques and DFT calculations. The formation of V₂O₃³⁺ species is confirmed by the observation of a 15- line pattern in the EPR spectra at room temperature.
