Abstract

Bacterial cellulose composites hold promise as renewable bioinspired materials for industrial and environmental applications. However, their use as free-standing water filtration membranes is hindered by low compressive strength, fouling, and poor contaminant selectivity. This study investigates the potential of bacterial cellulose-graphene oxide composites membranes for fouling resistance in pressure-driven filtration. Graphene oxide dispersed in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-400) is incorporated as a reinforcing filler into 3D network of bacterial cellulose using an in-situ synthesis method. The effect of graphene oxide on in situ fermentation yield and the formation of percolated-network in the composites shows that the optimal membrane properties are reached at a graphene oxide loading of 2 mg/mL. The two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets uniformly dispersed into the matrix of bacterial cellulose nanofibers via hydrogen-bonded interactions demonstrated nearly twofold higher water flux (380 L m−2 h−1) with a molecular weight cut-off ranging between 100–200 KDa and a sixfold increase in wet compression strength than pristine BC. When exposed to synthetic organic foulants and bacterial rich feed solutions, the composite membranes showed more than 95% flux recovery. Additionally, the membranes achieved over 95% rejection of synthetic natural organic matter and bacterial rich solutions, showcasing their enhanced fouling resistance and selectivity. Abstract

Two-dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are making impressive strides in a short duration compared to other candidates. However, to unlock their full potential for advanced logic transistors, attention must be given to improving the contacts or interfaces they form. One approach is to interface with a suitable low work function metal contact to allow the surface Fermi level (EF) movement toward intended directions, thereby augmenting the overall electrical performance. In this work, we implement physical characterization to understand the tin (Sn) contact interface on monolayer and bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) via in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ex situ atomic force microscopy. A Sn contact exhibited a van der Waals type weak interaction with the MoS2 bulk surface where no reaction between Sn and MoS2 is detected. In contrast, reaction products with Sn—S bonding are detected with a monolayer surface consistent with a covalentlike interface. Band alignment at the interface indicates that Sn deposition induces n-type properties in the bulk substrate, while EF of the monolayer remains pinned. In addition, the thermal stability of Sn on the same substrates is investigated in a sequential ultrahigh vacuum annealing treatment at 100, 200, 300, and 400 °C. Sn sublimated/desorbed from both substrates with increasing temperature, which is more prominent on the bulk substrate after annealing at 400 °C. Additionally, Sn significantly reduced the monolayer substrate and produced detectable interface reaction products at higher annealing temperatures. Abstract

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an enlargement of the abdominal aorta which, if left untreated, can progressively widen and may rupture with fatal consequences. In this paper, we determine an optimal treatment policy using Markov decision process modeling. The policy is optimal with respect to the number of quality adjusted life-years (QALYs) that are expected to be accumulated during the remaining life of a patient. The new policy takes into account factors that are ignored by the current clinical policy (e.g. the life-expectancy and the age-dependent surgical mortality). The resulting optimal policy is structurally different from the current policy. In particular, the policy suggests that young patients with small aneurysms should undergo surgery. The robustness of the policy structure is demonstrated using simulations. A gain in the number of expected QALYs is shown, which indicates a possibility of improved care for patients with AAAs., Comment: This is an extended version of the work presented at the 2016 IEEE Conference on Control Applications (CCA 2016)
