Search

With the uGMRT having unprecedented sensitivity and unique capability of providing instantaneous frequency coverage of 250$-$1460 MHz, we studied ${\rm FRB}\,180916.J0158+65$ over four months sampling during its active phase. We report the detection of $74$ bursts at Band-3 (i.e. 250$-$500 MHz) and $4$ bursts at Band-4 (i.e. 550$-$750 MHz) of uGMRT providing a burst rate of $\sim 4$ bursts/hour above a fluence of 0.05 Jy ms. We find that the source emits maximum energy and luminosity up to a fractional bandwidth of 70 MHz near the middle of its activity window consistent with earlier studies. We see a strong correlation between the excess dispersion measure and excess scattering width where both of them attains their maximum value near the middle of the activity window. We find that the normalized cumulative distribution of the waiting time can be well-fitted by an exponential function, indicating a stochastic emission process. We also notice that the cumulative burst rate changes rapidly with the intrinsic energy of the bursts near the middle of the activity window considering the full observed window of 0.4-0.6 of this FRB, where this change is much steeper for the high-energy bursts and shallower for the low-energy bursts., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, Submitted to Astrophysical Journal

Eclipses of radio emission have been reported for ~ 58 spider millisecond pulsars (MSP), of which only around 19% have been extensively studied. Such studies at low frequencies are crucial for probing the properties of the eclipse medium, as eclipses are more prominent at such frequencies. This study investigates eclipses in 10 MSPs in compact orbit using wide-bandwidth observations with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We report the first evidence of eclipsing for PSR J2234+0944 and J2214+3000 in one epoch, while no evidence of eclipsing was observed in the subsequent two epochs, indicating temporal evolution of the eclipse cutoff frequency in these systems. Constraints on the eclipse cutoff frequency were obtained for PSR J1555-2908, J1810+1744, and J2051-0827. Moreover, for the first time, we detected an eclipse at a non-standard orbital phase (~ 0.5) for PSR J1810+1744, with a duration longer than the eclipse observed at superior conjunction. No eclipses were detected for PSR J0751+1807, J1738+0333, and J1807-2459A at 300-500 MHz and 550-750 MHz, for which we discuss the possible reasons. We calculated the mass loss rates of the companions for PSR J1555-2908 and PSR J1810+1744, and found that these rates are insufficient to ablate the companion stars. We cataloged the $\dot{E}/a^2$, mass function, roche lobe filling factor, and inclination angle for compact MSP binaries with low-mass companions and found that higher spin-down flux does not guarantee eclipses. Our analysis, supported by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic, reveals that eclipsing black widow binaries generally exhibit a higher mass function compared to non-eclipsing black widow binaries, as reported by previous studies for a limited sample of black widow MSPs., Comment: Submitted in ApJ

In time-domain radio astronomy with arrays, voltages from individual antennas are added together with proper delay and fringe correction to form the beam in real-time. In order to achieve the correct phased addition of antenna voltages one has to also correct for the ionospheric and instrumental gains. Conventionally this is done using observations of a calibrator source located near to the target field. This scheme is sub-optimal since it does not correct for the variation of the gains with time and position in the sky. Further, since the ionospheric phase variation is typically most rapid at the longest baselines, the most distant antennas are often excluded while forming the beam. We present here a different methodology ("in-field phasing"), in which the gains are obtained in real-time using a model of the intensity distribution in the target field, which overcomes all of these drawbacks. We present observations with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) which demonstrates that in-field phasing does lead to a significant improvement in sensitivity. We also show, using observations of the millisecond pulsar J1120$-$3618 that this in turn leads to a significant improvement of measurements of the Dispersion Measure and Time of Arrival. Finally, we present test observations of the GMRT discovered eclipsing black widow pulsar J1544+4937 showing that in-field phasing leads to improvement in the measurement of the cut-off frequency of the eclipse., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

This study presents an orbital phase-dependent analysis of three black widow spider millisecond pulsars (BW MSPs), aiming to investigate the magnetic field within the eclipse environment. The ultra-wide-bandwidth low-frequency receiver (UWL) of the Parkes 'Murriyang' radio telescope is utilised for full polarisation observations covering frequencies from 704-4032 MHz. Depolarisation of pulsed emission is observed during the eclipse phase of three BW MSPs namely, J0024-7204J, J1431-4715 and PSR J1959+2048, consistent with previous studies of other BW MSPs. We estimated orbital phase dependent RM values for these MSPs. The wide bandwidth observations also provided the constraints on eclipse cutoff frequency for these BW MSPs. For PSR J0024-7204J, we report temporal variation of the eclipse cutoff frequency coupled with changes in the electron column density within the eclipse medium across six observed eclipses. Moreover, the eclipse cutoff frequency for PSR J1431-4715 is determined to be 1251 $\pm$ 80 MHz, leading to the conclusion that synchrotron absorption is the primary mechanism responsible for the eclipsing. Additionally, for PSR J1959+2048, the estimated cutoff frequency exceeded 1400 MHz, consistent with previous studies. The Fourier Domain Acceleration Search (FDAS) and Fourier Domain Jerk Search (FDJS) are proven matched filtering techniques for detecting binary pulsar signatures in time-domain radio astronomy datasets. Next generation radio telescopes such as the SPOTLIGHT project at the GMRT produce data at rates that mandate real-time processing, as storage of the entire captured dataset for subsequent offline processing is infeasible. The computational demands of FDAS and FDJS make them challenging to implement in real-time detection pipelines, requiring costly high performance computing facilities. To address this we propose Pulscan, an unmatched filtering approach which achieves order-of-magnitude improvements in runtime performance compared to FDAS whilst being able to detect both accelerated and some jerked binary pulsars. We profile the sensitivity of Pulscan using a distribution (N = 10,955) of synthetic binary pulsars and compare its performance with FDAS and FDJS. Our implementation of Pulscan includes an OpenMP version for multicore CPU acceleration, a version for heterogeneous CPU/GPU environments such as NVIDIA Grace Hopper, and a fully optimized NVIDIA GPU implementation for integration into an AstroAccelerate pipeline, which will be deployed in the SPOTLIGHT project at the GMRT. Our results demonstrate that unmatched filtering in Pulscan can serve as an efficient data reduction step, prioritizing datasets for further analysis and focusing human and subsequent computational resources on likely binary pulsar signatures., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

This paper presents an investigation of spectral properties of 10 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered by the uGMRT, observed from 2017-2023 using band 3 (300-500 MHz) and 4 (550-750 MHz) of uGMRT. For these MSPs, we have reported a range of spectral indices from ~0 to -4.8, while averaging the full observing band and all the observing epochs. For every MSP, we calculated the mean flux densities across 7-8 sub-bands each with approximately 25 MHz bandwidth spanning band 3 and band 4. We computed their modulation indices as well as average and maximum-to-median flux densities within each subband. Using a temporal variation of flux density we calculated the refractive scintillation time scales and estimated structure function with time lag for 8 MSPs in the sample. We note a significant temporal evolution of the in-band spectra, classified into three categories based on the nature of the best-fit power-law spectra, having single positive spectral indices, multiple broken power law, and single negative spectral indices. Additionally, indications of low-frequency turnover and a temporal variation of the turnover frequency (to the extent that turnover was observed for some of the epochs while not seen for the rest) were noted for all the MSPs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic investigation probing temporal changes in the MSP spectra as well as in turnover frequency. We report the detection of a total of 135 bursts from a recently discovered active, repeating fast radio burst, FRB 20240114A with the GMRT over a frequency range of 300$-$750 MHz. The bursts were detected with intrinsic widths ranging from 0.308 to 39.364 ms, a median scattering timescale of 2.059 ms at 400 MHz and 1.372 ms at 650 MHz. The fluences of the detected bursts range from 36.81 mJy ms to 7.47 Jy ms. Both the energy and waiting time distributions of the bursts can be fitted with broken power laws, indicating the presence of two distinct populations of bursts. The energy distributions were modeled via broken power law with $\alpha_{1} = -0.62 \pm 0.01$ and $\alpha_{2} = -1.98 \pm 0.11$, while the waiting time distribution was modeled via a broken power law with $\alpha_{1} = -0.71 \pm 0.01$ and $\alpha_{2} = -2.09 \pm 0.09$. Both the energy and waiting time distributions of FRB 20240114A are comparable to high-energy bursts from magnetars, and giant radio pulses from pulsars, indicating that such objects could be likely progenitors., Comment: Submitted for publication in ApJ

We present the timing solution for the 5.31-ms spider millisecond pulsar (MSP) J1242-4712, discovered with the GMRT. PSR J1242-4712 orbits a companion of minimum mass 0.08 M$_{\odot}$ with an orbital period of 7.7 hrs and occupies a relatively unexplored region in the orbital period versus companion mass space. We did not detect gamma-ray pulsations for this MSP, and also could not identify the optical counterpart for PSR J1242-4712 in available optical/near-infrared data. The profile of J1242-4712 evolves with frequency showing a clear single component at lower frequencies and a three-component profile at 650 MHz. PSR J1242-4712 eclipses for a very short duration near superior conjunction (orbital phase ~ 0.23-0.25) below 360 MHz. Moreover, significant DM delays and errors in pulse times of arrivals are observed near inferior conjunction (orbital phase ~ 0.7), along with an observed eclipse in one epoch at 650 MHz. Observed eclipses and significant orbital period variability suggest that PSR J1242-4712 is possibly not a He-WD binary, but has a semi or non-degenerate companion, indicating that this is a ``spider" MSP lying in a region between typical black widows and redbacks. This system may represent a distinct category of spider MSPs, displaying characteristics that bridge the gap between known black widow and redback MSPs., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We present results from a long-term monitoring of frequency dependent eclipses of the radio emission from PSR J1544+4937 which is a ``black widow spider'' millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a compact binary system. The majority of such systems often exhibit relatively long duration radio eclipses caused by ablated material from their companion stars. With the wide spectral bandwidth of upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), we present first systematic study of temporal variation of eclipse cut-off frequency. With decade-long monitoring of 39 eclipses for PSR J1544+4937, we notice significant changes in the observed cut-off frequency ranging from 343 $\pm$ 7 MHz to > 740 MHz. We also monitored changes in eclipse cut-off frequency on timescales of tens of days and observed a maximum change of $\ge$ 315 MHz between observations that were separated by 22 days. In addition, we observed a change of $\sim$ 47 MHz in eclipse cut-off frequency between adjacent orbits, i.e. on timescales of $\sim 2.9$ hours. We infer that such changes in the eclipse cut-off frequency depict an eclipse environment for the PSR J1544+4937 system that is dynamically evolving, where, along with the change in electron density, the magnetic field could also be varying. We also report a significant correlation between the eclipse cut-off frequency and the mass loss rate of the companion. The discovery and timing follow-up of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are necessary not just for their usefulness in Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) but also for investigating their own intriguing properties. In this work, we provide the findings of the decade-long timing of the four MSPs discovered by the Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope (GMRT), including their timing precision, model parameters, and newly detected proper motions. We compare the timing results for these MSPs before and after the GMRT upgrade in 2017, characterise the improvement in timing precision due to the bandwidth upgrade. We discuss the suitability of these four GMRT MSPs as well as the usefulness of their decade-long timing data for the PTA {experiments. Many pulsars in the known population exhibit nulling, which is characterised by a sudden cessation and subsequent restoration of radio emission. In this work, we present the localization, timing, and emission properties of a GHRSS discovered pulsar J1244-4708. Moreover, we find that this pulsar shows nulling with a nulling fraction close to 60%. A quasi-periodicity is also seen in the nulling from this pulsar with two timescales. We demonstrate the broadband nature of nulling in this pulsar using simultaneous observations in band-3 (300-500 MHz) and band-4 (550-750 MHz) with the uGMRT. We also present a comparison of the efficiency of various search approaches such as single pulse search, Fast Folding Algorithm (FFA) based search, and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based search to search for nulling pulsars. The timing follow-up of newly discovered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is hindered by the larger positional uncertainty (a few tens of arc-minutes) associated with the discovery. In this paper, we present the localization of two MSPs, discovered by the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey, up to arc-second accuracy using a 33~MHz offline coherently dedispersed gated correlator. This gated correlator is an upgraded version of the earlier 16~MHz design. This new development with a factor of two enhancement in the observing bandwidth offers better sensitivity in the image domain, leading to more precise localization. Aided by the precise position, we followed up these two MSPs with sensitive phased-array (PA) beams of upgraded GMRT from 300 to 1460 MHz. More sensitive observations in the PA mode for these two MSPs yield precise ($\sim$ sub-$\mu s$) time-of-arrivals, with DM uncertainties in the range of $10^{-4}-10^{-5}$ $pc\,cm^{-3}$. We also report the profile evolution of the two MSPs over 300$-$1460 MHz. Results from 11 years of radio timing for eclipsing black widow millisecond pulsar (MSP) binary, J1544+4937, is presented in this paper. We report a phase-connected timing model for this MSP, using observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at multiple frequencies and with Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This is the longest-duration timing study of any galactic field MSP with the GMRT. While extending the timing baseline from the existing 1.5 years to about a decade we report the first detection for a significant value of proper motion ($\mathrm{\mu_{T}} \sim$ 10.14(5) $\mathrm{mas/year}$) for this pulsar. Temporal variations of dispersion measure ($\mathrm{\Delta DM~ \sim 10^{-3}}$ pc $\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$) manifested by significant determination of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order DM derivatives are observed along the line of sight to the pulsar. We also noticed frequency-dependent DM variations of the order of $\mathrm{10^{-3}~ pc~ cm^{-3}}$, which could arise due to spatial electron density variations in the interstellar medium. This study has revealed a secular variation of the orbital period for this MSP for the first time. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) based periodicity search methods provide an efficient way to search for millisecond and binary pulsars but encounter significant sensitivity degradation while searching for long period and short duty cycle pulsars. An alternative to FFT-based search methods called the Fast Folding Algorithm (FFA) search, provides superior sensitivity to search for signals with long periods and short duty cycles. In the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey, we are using an FFA-based pipeline to search for isolated pulsars in a period range of 100 ms to 100 s. We have processed 2800 degree$^2$ of the sky coverage away from the Galactic plane and discovered 6 new pulsars. Here, we report the discovery of 4 of these pulsars with the FFA search pipeline. This includes a narrow duty cycle pulsar, J1936$-$30, which shows nulling behavior with an extreme nulling fraction of $\sim 90\%$. Two of the GHRSS discoveries from the FFA search lie in narrow duty cycle ranges beyond the limit of the existing population. This paper presents the High-Performance computing efforts with FPGA for the accelerated pulsar/transient search for the SKA. Case studies are presented from within SKA and pathfinder telescopes highlighting future opportunities. It reviews the scenario that has shifted from offline processing of the radio telescope data to digitizing several hundreds/thousands of antenna outputs over huge bandwidths, forming several 100s of beams, and processing the data in the SKA real-time pulsar search pipelines. A brief account of the different architectures of the accelerators, primarily the new generation Field Programmable Gate Array-based accelerators, showing their critical roles to achieve high-performance computing and in handling the enormous data volume problems of the SKA is presented here. The Fourier Domain Acceleration Search (FDAS) is an effective technique for detecting faint binary pulsars in large radio astronomy datasets. This paper quantifies the sensitivity impact of reducing numerical precision in the GPU accelerated FDAS pipeline of the AstroAccelerate software package. The prior implementation used IEEE-754 single-precision in the entire binary pulsar detection pipeline, spending a large fraction of the runtime computing GPU accelerated FFTs. AstroAccelerate has been modified to use bfloat16 (and IEEE754 double-precision to provide a "gold standard" comparison) within the Fourier domain convolution section of the FDAS routine. Approximately 20,000 synthetic pulsar filterbank files representing binary pulsars were generated using SIGPROC with a range of physical parameters. They have been processed using bfloat16, single and double-precision convolutions. All bfloat16 peaks are within 3% of the predicted signal-to-noise ratio of their corresponding single-precision peaks. Of 14,971 "bright" single-precision fundamental peaks above a power of 44.982 (our experimentally measured highest noise value), 14,602 (97.53%) have a peak in the same acceleration and frequency bin in the bfloat16 output plane, whilst in the remaining 369 the nearest peak is located in the adjacent acceleration bin. There is no bin drift measured between the single and double-precision results. The bfloat16 version of FDAS achieves a speedup of approximately 1.6x compared to single-precision. A comparison between AstroAccelerate and the PRESTO software package is presented using observations collected with the GMRT of PSR J1544+4937, a 2.16ms black widow pulsar in a 2.8 hour compact orbit.

Searching for periodic non-accelerated signals in presence of ideal white noise using the fully phase-coherent Fast Folding Algorithm (FFA) is theoretically established as a more sensitive search method than the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) search with incoherent harmonic summing. In this paper, we present a comparison of the performance of an FFA search implementation using RIPTIDE and an FFT search implementation using PRESTO, over a range of signal parameters with white noise and with real telescope noise from the GHRSS survey with the uGMRT. We find that FFA search with appropriate de-reddening of time series, performs better than FFT search with spectral whitening for long period pulsars in real GHRSS noise conditions. We describe an FFA search pipeline implemented for the GHRSS survey looking for pulsars over a period range of 0.1 s to 100 s and up to dispersion measure of 500 pc cm$^{-3}$. We processed GHRSS survey data covering $\sim$ 1500 degree$^2$ of the sky with this pipeline. We re-detected 43 known pulsars with better signal-to-noise in the FFA search than in the FFT search. We also report discovery of two new pulsars including a long period pulsar having a short duty-cycle with this FFA search pipeline. Incoherent harmonic summing is a technique which is used to improve the sensitivity of Fourier domain search methods. A one dimensional harmonic sum is used in time-domain radio astronomy as part of the Fourier domain periodicity search, a type of search used to detect isolated single pulsars. The main problem faced when implementing the harmonic sum on many-core architectures, like GPUs, is the very unfavourable memory access pattern of the harmonic sum algorithm. The memory access pattern gets worse as the dimensionality of the harmonic sum increases. Here we present a set of algorithms for calculating the harmonic sum that are suited to many-core architectures such as GPUs. We present an evaluation of the sensitivity of these different approaches, and their performance. Modeling of frequency-dependent effects, contributed by the turbulence in the free electron density of interstellar plasma, is required to enable the detection of the expected imprints from the stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background in pulsar timing data. In this work, we present an investigation of temporal variations of interstellar medium for a set of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with the upgraded GMRT aided by large fractional bandwidth at lower observing frequencies. Contrary to the conventional narrow-band analysis using a frequency invariant template profile, we applied $PulsePortraiture$ based wide-band timing analysis while correcting for the evolution of the pulsar profile with frequency. Implementation of $PulsePortraiture$ based wide-band timing method for the GMRT discovered MSPs to probe the DM variations resulted in a DM precision of $10^{-4}\,pc~cm^{-3}$. In general, we achieve similar DM and timing precision from wide-band timing compared to the narrow-band timing with matching temporal variations of DMs. This wide-band timing study of newly discovered MSPs over a wide frequency range highlights the effectiveness of profile-modeling at low frequencies and probes the potential of using them in pulsar timing array., Comment: 35 pages, 28 figures, accepted in ApJ

The frequency dependent eclipses of the radio emission from millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in compact binary systems provide an opportunity to understand the eclipse mechanism and to determine the nature of the eclipsing medium. We combine multifrequency observations from the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and model the broadband radio spectrum in the optically thick to thin transition regime to constrain the eclipse mechanism. The best-fit model to the eclipse phase spectra favors synchrotron absorption by relativistic electrons. We are able to strongly constrain the frequency of onset of the eclipse to 345$\pm$5 $\mathrm{MHz}$, which is an order of magnitude more precise than previous estimates. The dependence on the magnetic field strength of synchrotron absorption allowed us to estimate the magnetic field strength of the eclipse medium to be $\sim$13 $\mathrm{G}$, which is very similar to the values obtained by considering a pressure balance between the incident pulsar wind and the stellar wind of the companion. Applying this method to other millisecond binary pulsars will enable us to determine if the eclipse mechanisms are all the same and also estimate the wind and magnetic field properties of the companion stars. The extreme timing stability of radio millisecond pulsars (MSPs) combined with their exotic environment and evolutionary history makes them excellent laboratories to probe matter in extreme condition. Population studies indicate that we have discovered less than five per cent of the MSPs of our Galaxy, implying that a huge majority of radio MSPs are waiting to be discovered with improved search techniques and more sensitive surveys. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the present status of ongoing and upcoming surveys for MSPs. Observed spectra, profile and polarisation properties of known radio MSPs are also summarised. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) project has the primary goal of detecting and characterizing low-frequency gravitational waves through high-precision pulsar timing. The mitigation of interstellar effects is crucial to achieve the necessary precision for gravitational wave detection. Effects like dispersion and scattering are more influential at lower observing frequencies, with the variation of these quantities over week-month timescales requiring high-cadence multi-frequency observations for pulsar timing projects. In this work, we utilize the dual-frequency observing capability of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and evaluate the potential decrease in dispersion measure (DM) uncertainties when combined with existing pulsar timing array data. We present the timing analysis for four millisecond pulsars observed with the GMRT simultaneously at 322 and 607 MHz, and compare the DM measurements with those obtained through NANOGrav observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and Arecibo Observatory at 1400 to 2300 MHz frequencies. Measured DM values with the GMRT and NANOGrav program show significant offsets for some pulsars, which could be caused by pulse profile evolution in the two frequency bands. In comparison to the predicted DM uncertainties when incorporating these low-frequency data into the NANOGrav dataset, we find that higher-precision GMRT data is necessary to provide improved DM measurements. Through the detection and analysis of pulse profile baseline ripple in data on test pulsar B1929+10, we find that, while not important for this data, it may be relevant for other timing datasets. We present a multi-frequency study of eclipse properties of a transitional redback millisecond pulsar J1227$-$4853 discovered in 2014 with the GMRT. Emission from this pulsar is eclipsed at 607 MHz for about 37% of its orbit around the superior conjunction. We observe eclipse ingress and egress transition which last 12% and 15% of its orbit respectively, resulting in only 36% of the orbit being unaffected by eclipsing material. We report an excess dispersion measure (DM) at eclipse boundaries of 0.079(3) pc cm$^{-3}$ and the corresponding electron column density (N$_e$) is 24.4(8) x 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$. Simultaneous timing and imaging studies suggests that the eclipses in J1227$-$4853 are not caused by temporal smearing due to excess dispersion and scattering but could be caused by removal of pulsar flux due to cyclotron absorption of the pulsed signal by intra-binary material constraining the companion's magnetic field. Additionally, near inferior conjunction at orbital phase 0.71 and 0.82 the pulsed emission is significantly delayed which is associated with a fading of the pulsed and continuum flux densities. At orbital phase $\sim$0.82, we measure a change in DM of 0.035(3) pc cm$^{-3}$ and N$_e$ of 10.8(8) x 10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ associated with a dimming of up to $\sim$30% of the peak flux density. Such flux fading around a fixed orbital phase is not reported for other eclipsing binaries. We present an experiment performed to understand the polarization convention adopted for band 4 (550--900 MHz) of the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). For that we observed the pulsar B1702--19 in this band, both in interferometry and pulsar modes, and compare the results with its already known Stokes $I$, $Q$, $U$, $V$ profiles obtained with the Lovell telescope. We find that the results obtained from interferometry and pulsar modes of the uGMRT agree with each other. However, although the Stokes $U$ profile obtained with the uGMRT match with that obtained by the Lovell telescope, Stokes $Q$ and $V$ do not. This can be explained if the $X$ and $Y$ dipoles in this band, from which $R$ and $L$ are derived, are swapped w.r.t. the IAU convention. The swapping makes $RR^*$ and $LL^*$ of the uGMRT band 4 to be $LL^*$ and $RR^*$ respectively according to the IEEE convention. This implies that if we need to compare polarization measurements obtained in band 4 of the uGMRT with telescopes like Lovell, Parkes, Very Large Array etc. (all follow IEEE convention for defining right and left hand circular polarization), we must interchange $RR^*$ and $LL^*$, and change the sign of Stokes $Q$ for the uGMRT data. Note that this is the current convention for uGMRT band 4, and is likely to change in future once the swapping of the dipoles is taken care of. We present the HI 21 cm spectral line and continuum observations of the Galactic supernova remnant candidate G351.7-1.2 using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. Strong absorption features are observed towards the HII regions in the star forming complex associated with G351.7-1.2. Along with HI emission towards the outer periphery of the supernova remnant shell, we distinguish a high velocity jet-like feature in the velocity range +40 km/s to +52 km/s in HI. This unusual and highly collimated feature, with a projected length of ~7 pc and an opening angle of 14.4 deg, is located towards the interior of the radio shell. This is the first report of a such a well collimated HI jet-like emission. The peculiar location and the detection of a gamma-ray source towards the central peak of this HI jet suggests its plausible association with the supernova remnant candidate., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS Letters, 5 pages, 6 figures

We present a detailed analysis of post-correlation beamforming (i.e. beamforming which involves only phased sums of the correlation of the voltages of different antennas in an array), and compare it with the traditionally used incoherent and phased beamforming techniques. Using data from the GMRT we show that post-correlation beamformation results in a many-folds increase in the signal-to-noise for periodic signals from pulsars and several order of magnitude reduction in the number of false triggers from single pulse events like fast radio bursts (FRBs). This difference arises primarily because the post-correlation beam contains less red-noise, as well as less radio frequency interference. The post-correlation beam can also be more easily calibrated than the incoherent or phased array beams. We also discuss two different modes of post-correlation beamformation, viz. (1) by subtracting the incoherent beam from the coherent beam and (2) by phased addition of the visibilities. The computational costs for both these beamformation techniques as well as their suitability for studies of pulsars and FRBs are discussed. Techniques discussed here would be of interest for all upcoming surveys with interferometric arrays. Finally, we describe a time-domain survey with the GMRT using the post-correlation beamformation as a case study. We find that post-correlation beamforming will improve the current GMRT time-domain survey sensitivity by ~ 2 times for pulsars with periods of few 100s of millisecond and by many-folds for even slower pulsars, making it one of the most sensitive surveys for pulsars and FRBs at low and mid radio frequencies., Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) with its unprecedented sensitivity and high figure of merit, is expected to result in the discovery of a large population of pulsars including pulsars of previously unknown type. In the phase-2 of the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey with the uGMRT we will reach 1/4th of sensitivity of the SKA Phase-1. In this paper we highlight the salient features of the survey of pulsars and fast transients with the uGMRT highlighting its discovery potential. The extended GMRT (eGMRT) equipped with wide field- of-view, increased collecting area will have unprecedented sensitivity in time-domain astronomy, reaching close to SKA-Phase1. We are conducting a survey for pulsars and transients using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey is an off-Galactic-plane (|b|>5) survey in the declination range -40 deg to -54 deg at 322 MHz. With the high time (up to 30.72 micro-sec) and frequency (up to 0.016275 MHz) resolution observing modes, the 5-sigma detection limit is 0.5 mJy for a 2 ms pulsar with 10% duty cycle at 322 MHz. Total GHRSS sky coverage of 2866 square-deg, will result from 1953 pointing, each covering 1.8 square-deg. The 10-sigma detection limit for a 5 milli-sec transient burst is 1.6 Jy for the GHRSS survey. In addition, the GHRSS survey can reveal transient events like rotating radio transients or fast radio bursts. With 35% of the survey completed (i.e. 1000 square-deg), we report the discovery of 10 pulsars, one of which is a millisecond pulsar (MSP), one of the highest pulsar per square degree discovery rates for any off-Galactic plane survey. We re-detected 23 known in-beam pulsars. Utilising the imaging capability of the GMRT we also localised 4 of the GHRSS pulsars (including the MSP) in the gated image plane within +/- 10 arc-second. We demonstrated rapid convergence in pulsar timing with a more precise position than is possible with single dish discoveries. We also exhibited that we can localise the brightest transient sources with simultaneously obtained lower time resolution imaging data, demonstrating a technique that may have application in the SKA., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of the multi-frequency scatter time measurements for ten radio pulsars that were relatively less studied in this regard. The observations were performed using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope at the observing frequencies of 150, 235, 325, 610 and 1060~MHz. The data we collected, in conjunction with the results from other frequencies published earlier, allowed us to estimate the scatter time frequency scaling indices for eight of these sources. For PSR J1852$-$0635 it occurred that its profile undergoes a strong evolution with frequency, which makes the scatter time measurements difficult to perform, and for PSR J1835$-$1020 we were able to obtain reliable pulse broadening estimates at only two frequencies. We used the eight frequency scaling indices to estimate both: the electron density fluctuation strengths along the respective lines-of-sight, and the standardized amount of scattering at the frequency of 1 GHz. Combining the new data with the results published earlier by Lewandowski et al., we revisited the scaling index versus the dispersion measure (DM) relation, and similarly to some of the earlier studies we show that the average value of the scaling index deviates from the theoretical predictions for large DM pulsars, however it reaches the magnitude claimed by L\"ohmer et al. only for pulsars with very large DMs ($>$650 pc cm$^{-3}$). XSS J12270-4859 is an X-ray binary associated with the Fermi LAT gamma-ray source 1FGL J1227.9-4852. In 2012 December, this source underwent a transition where the X-ray and optical luminosity dropped and the spectral signatures of an accretion disc disappeared. We report the discovery of a 1.69 millisecond pulsar (MSP), PSR J1227-4853, at a dispersion measure of 43.4 pc cm$^{-3}$ associated with this source, using the GMRT at 607 MHz. This demonstrates that, post-transition, the system hosts an active radio MSP. This is the third system after PSR J1023+0038 and PSR J1824-2452I showing evidence of state switching between radio MSP and low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) states. We report timing observations of PSR J1227-4853 with the GMRT and Parkes, which give a precise determination of the rotational and orbital parameters of the system. The companion mass measurement of 0.17 to 0.46 M$_{sun}$ suggests that this is a redback system. PSR J1227-4853 is eclipsed for about 40% of its orbit at 607 MHz; with additional short-duration eclipses at all orbital phases. We also find that the pulsar is very energetic, with a spin-down luminosity of ~ 10$^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$.
