7. Quantum Critical Points in Ferroelectric Relaxors: Stuffed Tungsten Bronze K3Li2Ta5O15 and Lead Pyrochlore (Pb2Nb2O7)

Abstract

We have synthesised ceramic specimens of the tetragonal tungsten bronze K3Li2Ta5O15 (KLT) and characterized its phase transition via X-ray, dielectric permittivity, ultrasonic spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements. The space group of KLT is reported as both P4/mbm or Cmmm with the orthorhombic distortion occurring when there are higher partial pressures of volatile K and Li used within the closed crucibles for the solid state synthesis. The data show strong relaxor behaviour, with the temperature at which the two dielectric relative permittivity peaks decreasing with 104 K $\geqslant$ Tm1 $\geqslant$ 69 K and 69 K $\geqslant$ Tm2 $\geqslant$ 46 K as probe frequency f is reduced from 1 MHz to 316 Hz. The data satisfy a Vogel-Fulcher model with an extrapolated freezing temperature for {\epsilon}' and {\epsilon}" of Tf1 = + 15.8 and - 11.8 K and Tf2 = - 5.0 and - 15.0 K for f $\rightarrow$ 0 (tending to dc). Therefore by tuning frequency, the transition could be shifted to absolute zero suggesting KLT has a relaxor-type quantum critical point. In addition, we have reanalysed the conflicting literature for Pb2Nb2O7 pyrochlore which suggests that this is also a relaxor-type quantum critical point as the freezing temperature from Vogel-Fulcher fitting is below absolute zero. Since the transition temperature evidenced in the dielectric data at ca. 100 kHz shifts below zero Kelvin for very low frequencies, heat capacity data collected in the zero-frequency (dc) limit, should not indicate a transition. Both of these materials show promise as possible new relaxor-type quantum critical points within non-perovskite based structures as multiple compounds are reported with low-temperature transitions.

Abstract

In this paper we describe physical properties arising in the vicinity of two coupled quantum phase transitions. We consider a phenomenological model based on two scalar order parameter fields locally coupled biquadratically and having a common quantum critical point as a function of a quantum tuning parameter such as pressure or magnetic field. A self-consistent treatment suggests that the uniform static susceptibilities of the two order parameter fields may have the same qualitative form at low temperature even where the forms differ sharply in the absence of the biquadratic coupling. The possible limitations of the self-consistent analysis leading to this prediction are considered.

Abstract

The Hall coefficient $R_H$ and resistivity $\rho$ of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se display a number of puzzling features vs. temperature $T$. We propose a model that describes well the non-monotonic variation of $R_H(T)$. A key feature of the model is a chemical potential that is weakly $T$-dependent. From the fit to the model, we infer a "transport" gap $\Delta_T$ of 50 mV. We find that hydrostatic pressure $P$ (0-27 kbar) has a pronounced effect on both $R_H$ and $\rho$. We show that these changes arise from decreases in both $\Delta_T$ and the hole effective mass under pressure., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figs., 1 table

16. School District Restructuring and the Search for Coherence: A Case Study of Adaptive Realignment and Organizational Change.

Abstract

Findings of a case study that examined restructuring and organizational change in a California school district over a 12-year period are presented in this paper. The research draws upon the conceptual framework of "adaptive realignment," a process in which an organization continually responds to external and internal changes as they occur. Data were derived from document analysis of district records and two phases of interviews. The first interviews were conducted with a total of 22 respondents: 2 superintendents, 3 board members, 3 central office administrators, 5 teachers, and 9 principals. The second stage involved 11 of the original sample. Shifting goals and strategies, an alternating locus of organizational control, poorly defined methods of sustaining change, and administrative turnover were identified as the dynamics that contributed to a seemingly incoherent pattern of adaptive realignment. When initial efforts to restructure the district through school-based management appeared unsuccessful, school officials ultimately chose short-term bureaucratic remedies to solve longstanding systemic problems. Conclusions are that: (1) a large gap exists between the rhetoric and reality of restructuring; (2) political community pressure for change may accelerate the process; and (3) models of school-based autonomy and centralized support may be integrated in practice. 27. Mood, family process and life experience in intensively training young athletes

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to examine how participation in intensive sports training affected the risk of depressive disorder in a randomly selected group of young athletes. The possible adverse effects of intensive training upon the physical and psychological development of the young athlete have become of increasing concern. In general little is known about the psychological effects of early involvement in sport. Despite this paucity of knowledge there has been considerable concern that young athletes are more at risk of emotional problems. The data for this investigation were part of a general population survey designed to monitor the effect of intensive training on a sample of highly trained young athletes. A country-wide randomly selected group of 453 young athletes aged from 9 to 18 years, from four different sports - football, gymnastics, swimming and tennis - were assessed and then monitored for two consecutive years. In addition a group of children (n = 471) were drawn from the general population for comparative purposes. All completed the Depression Self Rating Scale for Children (DSRS), the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES II) and the Great Ormond Street Self Image Profile (GOSSIP). An empirical analysis revealed young athletes had significantly lower levels of depressive symptomatology, higher levels of self esteem and perceived their families to be closer and more cohesive than children from the comparison population. Further analysis indicated children from the comparison population were over 9 times more likely to have low self esteem and high depression scores than children involved in intensive training. Longitudinal data analysis investigated the stability of these findings over time and showed the best predictors of Time 2 DSRS scores were a combination of baseline DSRS, global and family self esteem, age and cohesion. In conclusion, strengths and weaknesses of the research design are described in the light of the empirical findings, explanatory models are suggested and implications for future research discussed.

32. Real-world evidence research in metastatic colorectal cancer: raising awareness of the need for patient contributions.

Abstract

Real-world evidence (RWE) research helps determine whether outcomes observed in clinical trials happen in real-life clinical practice. RWE research may help patients receive more appropriate treatment, closer to their needs and wishes. RWE for metastatic colorectal cancer is currently limited. The PROMETCO RWE study is an important example of an ongoing initiative that focuses on patient-reported outcomes in metastatic colorectal cancer. Patients play an active role throughout the RWE research process, including study design, participation and results dissemination. This involvement can encourage greater patient empowerment through active engagement, potentially resulting in various benefits that can lead to improved clinical outcomes. Greater patient engagement can increase involvement in RWE, helping more patients to access the benefits of RWE research. Clinical Trial Registration:NCT03935763 (ClinicalTrials.gov) Real-world evidence (RWE) research provides information that is essential to improving medical treatment. When it comes to metastatic colorectal cancer – cancer that has spread to other parts of the body – only a few RWE studies have been conducted. RWE studies, such as the ongoing PROMETCO study in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, differ from clinical trials in that they include a wider range of people with fewer restrictions on type of treatments received. They can also place more attention to the patients' own opinions. By joining RWE studies, patients are likely to become more interested in their disease and take a more active role in their treatment. In the end, this can help to improve their quality of life and possibly improve the outcomes of their treatment. Abstract

Introduction: The widespread adoption of the ANTT®Clinical Practice Framework as a single standard for aseptic technique, has highlighted that many clinical procedures do not require a sterile procedure pack to be performed safely and aseptically. This study explores the utilisation of a partially-sterile procedure pack that is specifically tailored to Standard-ANTT. Methods: A prospective project improvement evaluation, using a non-paired sample (pre: n=41; post: n =33) of emergency department staff in an NHS hospital. Staff were evaluated performing peripheral intravenous cannulations (PIVC) using Standard-ANTT and the B. Braun Standard-ANTT peripheral cannulation pack. Findings: Significant improvements were observed in practice following the implementation of the pack and training in Standard-ANTT, including: Key-Part protection significantly improved (pre: n=28, 68.2%; post: n=33, 100%), and reduction in the Key-Site being touched after disinfection (pre: n=17; 41.4%; post n=5; 15.1%). Conclusions: In conjunction with appropriate education and training, this study provides proof of concept that due to the widespread use of the ANTT Clinical Practice Framework as a single standard aseptic technique, procedure packs that are specifically tailored to Standard-ANTT, can help to promote best practice and improve efficiencies. Definitions: Partially-sterile procedure pack - all items required to be sterile remain in their individual blister wrapper. The final assembled pack itself is not then subjected to a further round of sterilisation as it is not needed. Sterile procedure pack - often contains a mixture of non-sterile and sterile items that have been stripped from their individual blister wrapper requiring the sterilisation of the final assembled pack.
