1. Characterizing the contribution of dust-obscured star formation at $z \gtrsim$ 5 using 18 serendipitously identified [CII] emitters

Abstract

We present a new method to determine the star formation rate (SFR) density of the Universe at $z \gtrsim 5$ that includes the contribution of dust-obscured star formation. For this purpose, we use a [CII] (158 $\mu$m) selected sample of galaxies serendipitously identified in the fields of known $z\gtrsim 4.5$ objects to characterize the fraction of obscured SFR. The advantage of a [CII] selection is that our sample is SFR-selected, in contrast to a UV-selection that would be biased towards unobscured star formation. We obtain a sample of 23 [CII] emitters near star-forming (SF) galaxies and QSOs -- three of which we identify for the first time -- using previous literature and archival ALMA data. 18 of these serendipitously identified galaxies have sufficiently deep rest-UV data and are used to characterize the obscured fraction of the star formation in galaxies with SFRs $\gtrsim 30\ \text{M}_{\odot} \ \text{yr}^{-1}$. We find that [CII] emitters identified around SF galaxies have $\approx$63\% of their SFR obscured, while [CII] emitters around QSOs have $\approx$93\% of their SFR obscured. By forward modeling existing wide-area UV luminosity function (LF) determinations, we derive the intrinsic UV LF using our characterization of the obscured SFR. Integrating the intrinsic LF to $M_{UV}$ = $-$20 we find that the obscured SFRD contributes to $>3\%$ and $>10\%$ of the total SFRD at $z \sim 5$ and $z \sim 6$ based on our sample of companions galaxies near SFGs and QSOs, respectively. Our results suggest that dust obscuration is not negligible at $z\gtrsim 5$, further underlining the importance of far-IR observations of the $z\gtrsim 5$ Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 24 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables (including appendices)

Abstract

Drought- and heat-driven tree mortality, along with associated insect outbreaks, have been observed globally in recent decades and are expected to increase in future climates. Despite its potential to profoundly alter ecosystem carbon and water cycles, how tree mortality scales up to ecosystem functions and fluxes is uncertain. We describe a framework for this scaling where the effects of mortality are a function of the mortality attributes, such as spatial clustering and functional role of the trees killed, and ecosystem properties, such as productivity and diversity. We draw upon remote-sensing data and ecosystem flux data to illustrate this framework and place climate-driven tree mortality in the context of other major disturbances. We find that emerging evidence suggests that climate-driven tree mortality impacts may be relatively small and recovery times are remarkably fast (~4 years for net ecosystem production). We review the key processes in ecosystem models necessary to simulate the effects of mortality on ecosystem fluxes and highlight key research gaps in modeling. Overall, our results highlight the key axes of variation needed for better monitoring and modeling of the impacts of tree mortality and provide a foundation for including climate-driven tree mortality in a disturbance framework.

5. Attentional processes in implicit sequence learning

Abstract

Recent conceptualisations of human learning and memory have drawn a distinction between conscious (explicit) and unconscious (implicit) processing modes (e.g., Clark & Squire, 1998). In line with this dichotomy, researchers have suggested that implicit learning is accomplished by automatic mechanisms that acquire information incidentally (Jimenez, 2003). Concordant with classical definitions of automaticity (Schneider & Shiffrin, 1977), the present thesis investigates whether implicit learning can be distinguished by its propensity to operate without placing demands on attentional resources and by its independence from selectional control. In contrast to previous studies, it was found that learning in the probabilistic serial reaction time (SRT) task is impaired by the presence of a secondary task designed to consume attentional resources (Experiment 1 cf. Jimenez & Mendez, 1999), and that selective attention during encoding is necessary for learning about an incidental to-be-ignored sequence (Experiments 6, 7 & 9 cf. Cock, Berry, & Buchner, 2002). Thus, these results do not support the existence of an automatic implicit learning system. Additionally, Experiment 1 presents evidence that SRT learning is conscious. However, experimental procedures that interfered with input stages of SRT learning - by introducing irrelevant distractors into the display - revealed that implicit learning is highly resistant to disruption of the selection process (Experiments 2-5 & 9). Moreover, other experiments (Experiments 8 & 9) show that two complex probabilistic sequences can be learned simultaneously, which further indicates that such learning is robust in the presence of noisy input. Collectively, these findings are consistent with the view that implicit learning is subserved by a powerful incidental learning mechanism, yet, like explicit processes, requires attention and awareness to function optimally (St. John & Shanks, 1997).

Abstract

Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land-atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80% of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50% of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets, while on-site soil water content is available for 56% of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90% or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. SAPFLUXNET adds to existing plant trait datasets, ecosystem flux networks, and remote sensing products to help increase our understanding of plant water use, plant responses to drought, and ecohydrological processes. Abstract

Drought threatens tropical rainforests over seasonal to decadal timescales (1-4), but the drivers of tree mortality following drought remain poorly understood (5,6). It has been suggested that reduced availability of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) critically increases mortality risk through insufficient carbon supply to metabolism ('carbon starvation') (7,8). However, little is known about how NSC stores are affected by drought, especially over the long term, and whether they are more important than hydraulic processes in determining drought-induced mortality. Using data from the world's longest-running experimental drought study in tropical rainforest (in the Brazilian Amazon), we test whether carbon starvation or deterioration of the water-conducting pathways from soil to leaf trigger tree mortality. Biomass loss from mortality in the experimentally droughted forest increased substantially after > 10 years of reduced soil moisture availability. The mortality signal was dominated by the death of large trees, which were at a much greater risk of hydraulic deterioration than smaller trees. However, we find no evidence that the droughted trees suffered carbon starvation, as their NSC concentrations were similar to those of non-droughted trees, and growth rates did not decline in either living or dying trees. Our results indicate that hydraulics, rather than carbon starvation, triggers tree death from drought in tropical rainforest., Drought-response observations from both field-scale experiments and natural droughts have demonstrated increased mortality over the short-term (1-3 years), with notably higher vulnerability for some taxa, and for larger trees (6,9,10). 16. A Study of Language and Area Programs. Final Report.

Abstract

This report describes the nature and scope of a national survey of language and area programs in the United States of America in 1968-69. An analysis of the various programs or a typology of programs was developed by taking each of the characteristics of the overall program--its area and language courses, and its faculty--and cross-tabulating them with factors such as the university setting, size and location of the program, a general qualitative ranking reflected in the annual competition for funds and fellowships, and measures of effectiveness in terms of written product, output of students in various disciplines, at various levels, and with various degrees of language competence. Language or area courses were also treated separately from their institutional setting. Grouped by discipline, they were combined into a national sample to give a cross-sectional look at the nature of language and the area instruction available for various kinds of specialization. The area studies in the report are classified into seven categories: (1) Africa south of the Sahara, (2) East Asia, (3) Eastern Europe, (4) Latin America, (5) Near and Middle East, (6) South Asia, and (7) Southeast Asia. The report discusses the plan of the study and the collection of the data, the analysis of the data and distribution of the study, and future plans. The data on which the study is based are stored on magnetic tape at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Institute of International Studies at the Office of Education. (RL)

Abstract

Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land-atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80% of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50% of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets, while on-site soil water content is available for 56% of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90% or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. SAPFLUXNET adds to existing plant trait datasets, ecosystem flux networks, and remote sensing products to help increase our understanding of plant water use, plant responses to drought, and ecohydrological processes. Abstract

Future climate change predictions for tropical forests highlight increased frequency and intensity of extreme drought events. However, it remains unclear whether large and small trees have differential strategies to tolerate drought due to the different niches they occupy. The future of tropical forests is ultimately dependent on the capacity of small trees (<10 cm in diameter) to adjust their hydraulic system to tolerate drought. To address this question, we evaluated whether the drought tolerance of neotropical small trees can adjust to experimental water stress and was different from tall trees. We measured multiple drought resistance-related hydraulic traits across nine common neotropical genera at the world's longest-running tropical forest throughfall-exclusion experiment and compared their responses with surviving large canopy trees. Small understorey trees in both the control and the throughfall-exclusion treatment had lower minimum stomatal conductance and maximum hydraulic leaf-specific conductivity relative to large trees of the same genera, as well as a greater hydraulic safety margin (HSM), percentage loss of conductivity and embolism resistance, demonstrating that they occupy a distinct hydraulic niche. Surprisingly, in response to the drought treatment, small trees increased specific hydraulic conductivity by 56.3% and leaf:sapwood area ratio by 45.6%. The greater HSM of small understorey trees relative to large canopy trees likely enabled them to adjust other aspects of their hydraulic systems to increase hydraulic conductivity and take advantage of increases in light availability in the understorey resulting from the drought-induced mortality of canopy trees. Our results demonstrate that differences in hydraulic strategies between small understorey and large canopy trees drive hydraulic niche segregation. Small understorey trees can adjust their hydraulic systems in response to changes in water and light availability, indicating that natural regeneration of tropical forests following long-term drought may be possible.
