45. Two highly polymorphic minisatellites from the pseudoautosomal region of the human sex chromosomes.

Abstract

Two pseudoautosomal loci DXYS15 and DXYS17 from the pairing region of the human sex chromosomes display a high variability with at least eight alleles each. The structural elements responsible for the polymorphisms have been isolated and sequenced. In both cases the variations result from DNA rearrangements occurring in tandemly repeated sequences (minisatellites) of 21‐29 nucleotides for DXYS15 and 28‐33 nucleotides for DXYS17. At reduced stringency, the DXYS15 minisatellite detects other hypervariable sequences located in other parts of the genome and hence represents a new family of minisatellites. In contrast to most other known hypervariable families, the DXYS15 hypervariable sequence displays a very high AT content.

Abstract

We perform retraction experiments on soap films where large particles bridge the two interfaces. Local velocities are measured by PIV during the unstationnary regime. The velocity variation in time and space can be described by a continuous fluid model from which effective viscosity (shear and dilatational) of particulate films is measured. The 2D effective viscosity of particulate films η2D increases with particle surface fraction ϕ: at low ϕ, it tends to the interfacial dilatational viscosity of the liquid/air interfaces and it diverges at the critical particle surface fraction ϕc ≃ 0.84. Experimental data agree with classical viscosity laws of hard spheres suspensions adapted to the 2D geometry, assuming viscous dissipation resulting from the squeeze of the liquid/air interfaces between the particles. Finally, we show that the observed viscous dissipation in particulate films has to be considered to describe the edge velocity during a retraction experiment at large particle coverage.

50. Heart and lung point-of-care ultrasonography tutoring in internal medicine: a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract

Purpose: In recent years, point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) has been integrated into internal medicine practice with most curricula composed of a single course. Despite competency acquisition during the course, a significant decline in proficiency occurs in the subsequent weeks due to a lack of regular practice and training. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a structured POCUS tutoring, on POCUS use and skills retention at 6 months., Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, internal medicine residents were enrolled after completing a practical course focused on heart and lung ultrasonography. Residents assigned to the intervention group were paired with a tutor, and time slots were scheduled for bedside direct supervision over the following 6 months. The primary outcome was the proportion of residents who successfully completed at least 25 POCUS examinations six months after inclusion. Secondary outcomes included self- and blinded-expert-assessed POCUS competency skills., Results: Between January and May 2022, 23 residents were included in the study. The intervention significantly increased the proportion of participants reaching the primary outcome (70% versus 0%; p < 0.001) with a median of 27 (interquartile range, IQR, 6 to 44) supervised examinations performed versus 0 (IQR 0 to 0) in intervention and control arm respectively; p < 0.001. After 6 months, proficiency was higher for most heart imaging but not for lung imaging, as assessed through self-assessment by participants or independently by blinded experts., Conclusion: Structured POCUS supervision significantly enhances the number of POCUS examinations and proficiency at 6-months, particularly in applications requiring greater visuospatial skills., Competing Interests: Declarations.
