Abstract

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

4. Classical solutions of a mean field system for pulse-coupled oscillators: long time asymptotics versus blowup

Abstract

We introduce a novel reformulation of the mean-field system for pulse-coupled oscillators. It is based on writing a closed equation for the inverse distribution function associated to the probability density of oscillators with a given phase in a suitable time scale. This new framework allows to show a hidden contraction/expansion of certain distances leading to a full clarification of the long-time behavior, existence of steady states, rates of convergence, and finite time blow-up of classical solutions for a large class of monotone phase response functions. In the process, we get insights about the origin of obstructions to global-in-time existence and uniform in time estimates on the firing rate of the oscillators.

5. Well-posedness and stability of a stochastic neural field in the form of a partial differential equation

Abstract

A system of partial differential equations representing stochastic neural fields was recently proposed with the aim of modelling the activity of noisy grid cells when a mammal travels through physical space. The system was rigorously derived from a stochastic particle system and its noise-driven pattern-forming bifurcations have been characterised. However, due to its nonlinear and non-local nature, standard well-posedness theory for smooth time-dependent solutions of parabolic equations does not apply. In this article, we transform the problem through a suitable change of variables into a nonlinear Stefan-like free boundary problem and use its representation formulae to construct local-in-time smooth solutions under mild hypotheses. Then, we prove that fast-decaying initial conditions and globally Lipschitz modulation functions imply that solutions are global-in-time. Last, we improve previous linear stability results by showing nonlinear asymptotic stability of stationary solutions under suitable assumptions.

9. Noise-driven bifurcations in a nonlinear Fokker-Planck system describing stochastic neural fields

Abstract

The existence and characterisation of noise-driven bifurcations from the spatially homogeneous stationary states of a nonlinear, non-local Fokker--Planck type partial differential equation describing stochastic neural fields is established. The resulting theory is extended to a system of partial differential equations modelling noisy grid cells. It is shown that as the noise level decreases, multiple bifurcations from the homogeneous steady state occur. Furthermore, the shape of the branches at a bifurcation point is characterised locally. The theory is supported by a set of numerical illustrations of the condition leading to bifurcations, the patterns along the corresponding local bifurcation branches, and the stability of the homogeneous state and the most prevalent pattern: the hexagonal one., Comment: Includes EBT. 43 pages, 5 figures

10. Adaptation to DNA damage, an asymptotic approach for a cooperative non-local system

Abstract

Following previous works about integro-differential equations of parabolic type modelling the Darwinian evolution of a population, we study a two-population system in the cooperative case. First, we provide a theoretical study of the limit of rare mutations and we prove that the limit is described by a constrained Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This equation is given by an eigenvalue of a matrix which accounts for the diffusion parameters and the coefficients of the system. Then, we focus on a particular application: the understanding of a phenomenon called Adaptation to DNA damage. In this framework, we provide several numerical simulations to illustrate our theoretical results and investigate mathematical and biological questions.

Abstract

Pulmonary functional imaging has demonstrated potential to improve thoracic radiotherapy. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to quantify ventilation/perfusion relationships in lung cancer patients using a new functional imaging approach, gallium-68 (68Ga)-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT); and 2) to compare ventilation/perfusion matching with diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO). Voxel-wise correlations between ventilation and perfusion varied widely among 19 patients (range: 0.26-0.88). 68Ga-PET/CT-measured percent gas exchanging lung volume was moderately correlated with DLCO (≤0.59). Our findings suggested that 68Ga-PET/CT ventilation/perfusion imaging provided complementary information and a reasonable surrogate for gas exchange in lung cancer patients.

15. A hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic PDE model describing chemotactic E. coli colonies

Abstract

We study a modified version of an initial-boundary value problem describing the formation of colony patterns of bacteria \textit{Escherichia Coli}. The original system of three parabolic equations was studied numerically and analytically and gave insights into the underlying mechanisms of chemotaxis. We focus here on the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic approximation and the hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic limiting system which describes the case of pure chemotactic movement without random diffusion. We first construct local-in-time solutions for the parabolic-elliptic-parabolic system. Then we prove uniform \textit{a priori} estimates and we use them along with a compactness argument in order to construct local-in-time solutions for the hyperbolic-elliptic-parabolic limiting system. Finally, we prove that some initial conditions give rise to solutions which blow-up in finite time in the $L^\infty$ norm in all space dimensions. This last result violet is true even in space dimension 1, which is not the case for the full parabolic or parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel systems.

Abstract

The Nonlinear Noisy Leaky Integrate and Fire (NNLIF) model is widely used to describe the dynamics of neural networks after a diffusive approximation of the mean-field limit of a stochastic differential equation system. When the total activity of the network has an instantaneous effect on the network, in the average-excitatory case, a blow-up phenomenon occurs. This article is devoted to the theoretical study of the NNLIF model in the case where a delay in the effect of the total activity on the neurons is added. We first prove global-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, independently of the sign of the connectivity parameter, that is, for both cases: excitatory and inhibitory. Secondly, we prove some qualitative properties of solutions: asymptotic convergence to the stationary state for weak interconnections and a non-existence result for periodic solutions if the connectivity parameter is large enough. The proofs are mainly based on an appropriate change of variables to rewrite the NNLIF equation as a Stefan-like free boundary problem, constructions of universal super-solutions, the entropy dissipation method and Poincar\'e's inequality.
