Le bois sera l'un des matériaux de construction de base du 21ème siècle. Ses propriétés de légèreté, de rigidité, d'isolation et sa capacité à capturer le carbone font de lui un matériau incontournable dans le contexte actuel, où les préoccupations écologiques sont omniprésentes. Une de ses particularités réside dans sa structure multi-échelle complexe et hétérogène qui résulte de la croissance adaptative et singulière d’un arbre dans son environnement (Figure 1). Comme toute ressource issue du vivant, sa variabilité naturelle est très forte et représente un enjeu essentiel dans sa valorisation comme matériau de construction, d’emballage ou d’aménagement intérieur ou extérieur. Les pays nordiques, aidés par l'homogénéité de leur ressource forestière, ont su industrialiser sa transformation et inonder le marché français si bien que près d’une planche sur deux mise en œuvre sur notre territoire est importée. Le principal frein à l’utilisation de bois local dans la construction réside dans la difficulté à prédire ses propriétés mécaniques du fait de son hétérogénéité intrinsèque plus forte que celle des bois du nord. En particulier, la construction à partir de bois feuillus, qui représentent les 2/3 de notre ressource, est aujourd'hui freinée par la complexité à modéliser leur comportement mécanique. Le premier paramètre d'hétérogénéité du bois réside dans l'orientation de ses fibres, qui gouverne ses propriétés mécaniques et physiques. La connaissance de cette orientation pour un placage ou un sciage peut améliorer son usage. Aujourd'hui, cette mesure peut être réalisée par des techniques laser et l'effet trachéide : lorsqu'un point laser rouge est appliqué sur une surface de bois, la lumière se distord et une ellipse est observée chez les résineux dont le grand axe suit les fibres. Ce phénomène, peu coûteux à instrumenter, peut être utilisé pour développer des modèles de comportement mécanique et de séchage. La plupart des auteurs se contente de l'utiliser et personne n'a véritablement publié sur le potentiel réel de l'exploitation de cet effet qui est considérable pour valoriser les bois locaux riches en nœuds.

To mitigate the disastrous effects of a blast wave, the use of layered claddings with thermal insulating materials could be a very economical solution. The present paper focuses on the study of the mechanical behaviour of a very low density insulating polyurethane foam (30 kg/m^3) under compressive loading. Static compressive tests are conducted with a press and nylon Split Hopkinson Pressure Bars (SHPB) are used to investigate the dynamic behaviour over a wide range of engineering strain rates from 10^{-5} to 10^3 s^{-1}. In addition to traditional displacement and strain measurements, the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique is used to observe the inhomogeneous strain fields. To better represent the mechanical state in the foam due to blast loadings, oedometric compression tests are also conducted. The foam response, showing a linear elastic stage, followed by a plastic plateau and a densification is shown to be transversely isotropic, heterogeneous and strain rate sensitive.

In France, a new law was introduced on July 30, 2003 which created the Technological Risk Prevention Plan (PPRT). The aim of the PPRT is to protect people by action on the existing urbanization ad by controlling the future land-use planning in the vicinity of upper-tier SEVESO sites.In this context, this article presents a methodology to help the activities concerned by a PPRT to implement and to optimize their protection with technical / organizational measures. The article will be an opportunity to highlight the positive aspects of the methodology and the difficulties encountered, for the first cases of application., Introduits en France par la loi Risques du 30 juillet 2003, les Plans de Prévention des Risques Technologiques (PPRT) visent à protéger les populations situées à proximité des sites SEVESO seuil haut en réglementant l’urbanisation existante et future. Dans cecontexte, l’objectif de cet article est de présenter la démarche proposée aux activités économiques pour trouver des solutions techniques et/ou organisationnelles pour la prise en compte du risque technologique. L’article fait également la lumière sur les points forts de la démarche et les difficultés rencontrées pour les premiers cas d’application.

Predictive tool developed by Ineris is applied to BLEVE accidents and theoretical results are compared to real observations. Numerical simulations are performed considering a finite element tool for LPG tank failure, a Large Eddy Simulation tool for thermal impact on the tank and an explicit coupling procedure between the two. LPG phase change within the tank is taken into account. Based on the main features of LPG tank, calculations allow to estimate and compare the fire development and the time before BLEVE and lead to a better understanding on how BLEVE was possible. Modelings with security systems like pressure relief valve are also led opening the discussion on potential efficiency of safety devices to avoid or delay BLEVE.

In France, two years after the catastrophic industrial accident of Toulouse, a new law was introduced on July 30, 2003 which created the Technological Risk Prevention Plan (PPRT in French, standing for Plan de Prévention des Risques Technologiques). The aim of the PPRT is to protect people by action on the existing urbanization and by controlling the future land-use planning in the vicinity of the existing upper-tier SEVESO establishments. Each PPRT imposes rules of land-use, use and exploitation of buildings and activities, in a differentiated zoning according to the potential hazards: red zones (dark then clear) in the immediate proximity of the dangerous installations, and blue zones (dark then clean) further away from the danger. This article presents a methodology to help the activities concerned by a PPRT (more particularly those located in the blue zoning) to implement and optimize their protection. The approach follows 5 main stages: - Identification of the hazards affecting the activity ; - Analysis of the vulnerability of buildings (overpressure, thermal and toxic effects) ant the vulnerability of staff working indoors or outdoors ; - Analysis of the dynamics of dangerous phenomena (time available for people to be safe) ; - Study and choice of measures ; These measures may include informing and training staff and visitors, setting up an organization to react during an accident (receive and broadcast the alert, joint a confinement room or a refuge area, evacuate…) or carrying out protection works (reinforcement of buildings). - Implementation of selected measures and monitoring

Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons au comportement mécanique d'une mousse de polyuréthane de très faible densité (30 kg/m 3). Pour étudier la sensibilité à la vitesse des différentes caractéristiques mécaniques de la mousse que sont la contrainte seuil, la contrainte plateau moyenne et la déformation à la densification, des essais de compression quasi-statiques et dynamiques aux barres de Hopkinson sont réalisés. Une attention particulière est apportée au suivi des champs de déformation des échantillons dont la réponse, même pour les faibles vitesses de déformation, s'avère hétérogène.

Trained by Gaston Bonnier (1853-1922) in Paris at the end of the 1880s, Henri Devaux (1862-1956) was numbered among the most promising botanists of his generation due to his work on gaseous exchanges of aquatic plants. Between 1906 and 1932, he was professor of plant physiology at the Faculty of sciences of Bordeaux. Even though it was not his primary field of study, he slowly developed an interest in the physico-chemistry of thin films (or layers) and became one of the most prominent figures of the French school that emerged on this topic in the 1910s. Throughout the first third of the 20th century, his works on surface were considered as a reference in this field, also in the United States, and opened him the doors of the Académie des sciences. Thin layers were also for him a way to understand the structure and functions of cellular membranes and, consequently, of the life on the molecular scale. Having worked on almost 10 000 pages of his unexplored laboratory notebooks, we have reconstructed the salient points of his investigative pathway in this field.Rooted in a protestant faith, Devaux also tried to show with science popularization writings that scientific knowledge and the Bible are in harmony. He defended a fixist creationist vision of the world. Devaux regularly linked science and religion in his laboratory notebooks and even claimed his faith in an article published in the Journal de physique.; Formé auprès de Gaston Bonnier (1853-1922) à Paris à la fin des années 1880, Henri Devaux (1862-1956) s’impose comme l’un des botanistes prometteurs de sa génération en travaillant sur les échanges gazeux chez les plantes aquatiques. Bien que ce ne soit pas son domaine de prédilection, il s’intéresse progressivement à la physico-chimie des lames (ou couches) minces et devient l’une des figures de l’école française qui émerge dans les années 1910 autour de ces questions. Tout au long du premier tiers du XXe siècle, ses travaux sur les effets de surface vont faire autorité, y compris outre-Atlantique, et lui ouvrir les portes de l’Académie des sciences. Les lames minces sont aussi un moyen pour lui de comprendre la structure et le fonctionnement des membranes cellulaires et in fine ceux du vivant à l’échelle moléculaire. En nous appuyant sur près de 10 000 pages de notes de laboratoire inédites, nous avons reconstruit l’essentiel de son cheminement intellectuel dans ce domaine.Ancré dans la foi réformée, Devaux cherche par ailleurs à montrer dans des écrits de vulgarisation que les savoirs scientifiques et la Bible concordent. Il y défend notamment une vision créationniste et fixiste du monde. Devaux lie régulièrement science et religion dans ses carnets de laboratoire et affirme même sa foi dans un article du Journal de physique.

Natural hazards have triggered major industrial accidents in the past, even if these NaTech accidents - a contraction of the words “natural” and “technological” - were not so numerous. Earthquake and Tsunami event in Japan in March 2011 is one of the most striking examples during the last decade. Several industrial plants have suffered irreversible damages and have generated important socioeconomic consequences. Internatech Project conducted by Ineris in collaboration with AIST, MSME Laboratory Marne-la-Vallée University and Phimeca company aimed to develop a resilience evaluation method of industrial structure subjected to tsunami and earthquake. Simplified models have been developed to describe the wave height profile in case of tsunamis. The mechanical vulnerability of cylindrical metal tanks has been investigated, taking into account multimodal failures (overturning, rupture of anchorages and sliding, buoyancy or buckling). Fragility curves have then been developed and could be implemented in resilience analyses. A similar framework was also developed for earthquake events and could be adapted in the future to other kinds of flooding events. The results contributed to the work carried out by Ineris in international group and the application of French regulations., Un accident NaTech (contraction de « naturel » et « technologique ») est un accident technologique majeur engendré par un évènement naturel et dont les conséquences sont susceptibles de porter atteinte à des tiers ou à l’environnement. Les accidents de type NaTech ne représentent qu’une faible part de l’ensemble des accidents industriels connus en Europe (5 %) et en France (7 %). Toutefois, les interactions entre aléas naturels et installations industrielles font aujourd’hui l’objet d’une attention soutenue compte tenu notamment des conséquences du changement climatique, qui a pour effet reconnu une fréquence accrue des phénomènes naturels extrêmes.

The objective of the project is to help companies to take into account the technological risk prevention plans (PPRT) introduced in France following AZF’s accident to manage land‑use planning in the vicinity of upper-tier SEVESO establishments. The project started in 2012 was conducted by INERIS in collaboration with CTICM, INSA Centre Val de Loire, ArcelorMittal, AMARIS, the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine affairs, Bourges Plus Urban Community and Cher County Council. It aimed to improve knowledge and to better understand and predict the structural response of single storey steel framed building to actions caused by explosions. The work involved blast small and middle-scale tests on building and analytical and numerical modelling. It led to develop a guide for practitioners allowing to facilitate the blast design of steel building. It gives a technical and economical solution to make the setting-up of companies around blast technological risk area easier as well as to improve levels of structural safety. The guide is available free of charge on the INERIS and other partners’ website., À la suite de la catastrophe d’AZF, la loi « Risque » n° 2003-699 du 30 juillet 2003 a créé les Plans de préventions des risques technologiques (PPRT). Ces plans visent à améliorer la coexistence des sites industriels à l’origine du risque et les activités économiques, tout en assurant la protection des personnes. Les PPRT peuvent ainsi prévoir des restrictions de l’urbanisation future autour du site industriel, et/ou des travaux de renforcement des bâtiments existants. Les zones soumises à un aléa de surpression de faible intensité (20-50 mbar) représentent de grandes zones constructibles dans lesquelles les bâtiments d’activités économiques en acier sont majoritairement représentés. Toutefois, afin de faciliter leur implantation dans ces zones réglementées, il est nécessaire d’accompagner les entreprises dans les mesures techniques à mettre en oeuvre. Pour répondre à cet enjeu, l’INERIS a initié en 2012 et pour une durée de 3 ans le projet de recherche BATIRSÛR « Bâtiment en acier en zone PPRT de surpression 20-50 mbar » avec le soutien du ministère de l’Environnement, de l’Énergie et de la Mer.

The decrease of greenhouse gases and pollutant emissions (nitrous oxides, carbon oxides, particles...) for spark ignited engines goes through the development of new technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging, downsizing, etc. However, the benefits of these technologies, which complexify the engines, are limited by the phenomena they intensify such as Cyclic Combustion Variability (CCV) and abnormal combustions. A thorough understanding of these phenomena is a cornerstone for the improvement of future engines. The aim of this work is to predict acyclic and transient phenomena in increasingly complex engines through the development, the validation and the use of a coupling method between Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and system simulation. This thesis has demonstrated that simulating a complete industrial engine in 3D with LES to study its transient behavior is possible. The methodology developed in the present work was used to study the engine of the national research agency project SGEmac and a good agreement was obtained between the experiments and the tridimensional simulations. These results are the last validation step of the coupling method and demonstrate the capacity of the coupled solver to simulate the whole engine. The coupling method is then applied to study engine load and regime transients for the national research agency project ASTRIDE. The comparison between simulations and experiments show that the coupled solver can simulate CCV and transients, thus fulfilling its initial goal., La réduction des émissions de dioxyde de carbone et de polluants réglementés (oxydes d'azote, hydrocarbures, particules...) dans les moteurs à allumage commandé est possible via l'apport de nouvelles technologies comme le downsizing, l'injection directe, la suralimentation, etc... Toutefois, les gains apportés par ces technologies, qui complexifient grandement le groupe motopropulseur, sont réduits du fait qu'elles induisent aussi une augmentation de l'intensité de certains phénomènes tels que les variations cycliques de la combustion (VCC) ou les combustions anormales. La compréhension de ces phénomènes est une clé dans l'amélioration des futurs moteurs à essence. L'objectif principal de cette thèse est de permettre la modélisation des phénomènes transitoires et acycliques dans des moteurs à structure de plus en plus complexe grâce au développement, à la validation puis à l'application d'une méthode de couplage entre la simulation aux grandes échelles (SGE ou LES pour Large-Eddy Simulation en anglais) et la simulation système. Ces travaux de thèse ont permis de démontrer qu'il est possible de simuler une configuration moteur et d'en étudier les comportements transitoires en 3D tout en prenant en compte la dynamique de tous les composants du moteur. Les simulations obtenues par cette approche pour le moteur du projet ANR SGEmac ont été comparées avec succès aux résultats expérimentaux et à des simulations tridimensionnelles : ces résultats constituent la dernière étape de validation du couplage et démontrent sa capacité à simuler des systèmes moteurs complets. Les codes couplés développés sont ensuite appliqués à l'étude des transitoires de charge et de régime pour le moteur du projet ANR ASTRIDE. La comparaison simulation/expérience montre que le solveur couplé permet bien de remplir les objectifs fixés de simulation des VCC et des transitoires.
