Direct numerical simulations are performed of turbulent forced convection in a channel flow with spanwise wall oscillation, either as a plane oscillation or as a streamwise travelling wave. The friction Reynolds number is fixed at $Re_{\tau_0} = 590$, but the Prandtl number $Pr$ is varied from 0.71 to 20. For $Pr>1$, the heat transfer is reduced by more than the drag, 40% compared to 30% at $Pr=7.5$. This Reynolds analogy breaking is related to the different responses of the velocity and thermal fields to the Stokes layer. It is shown that the Stokes layer near the wall attenuates the large-scale energy of the turbulent heat-flux and the turbulent shear-stress, but amplifies their small-scale energy. At higher Prandtl numbers, the thinning of the conductive sublayer means that the energetic scales of the turbulent heat-flux move closer to the wall, where they are exposed to a stronger Stokes layer production, increasing the contribution of the small-scale energy amplification. A predictive model is derived for the Reynolds and Prandtl number dependence of the heat-transfer reduction based on the scaling of the thermal statistics. The model agrees well with the computations for Prandtl numbers up to 20.

We introduce a practical method for modeling the small-signal behavior of dispersive and inhomogeneous helix-type traveling-wave tube (TWT) amplifiers based on a generalization of the one-dimensional Pierce model. Our model is applicable to both single-stage and multi-stage TWTs. Like the Pierce model, we assume that electrons flow linearly in one direction, parallel and in proximity to a slow-wave structure (SWS) which guides a single dominant electromagnetic mode. Realistic helix TWTs are modeled with position dependent and frequency-dependent SWS characteristics, such as loss, phase velocity, plasma frequency reduction factor, and interaction impedance. For the multi-stage helix TWT, we provide a simple lumped element circuit model for combining the stages separated by a sever, or gap, which attenuates the guided circuit mode while allowing the space-charge wave on the beam to pass freely to the next stage. The dispersive SWS characteristics are accounted for using full-wave eigenmode simulations for a realistic helix SWS supported by dielectric rods in a metal barrel, all of which contribute to the distributed circuit loss. We compare our computed gain vs frequency, computed using transfer matrices, to results found through particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and the 1D TWT code LATTE to demonstrate the accuracy of our model. Materials with Berry curvature dipoles (BDs) support a non-Hermitian electro-optic (EO) effect that is investigated here for lasing at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Such a system is here conceived as a stack of low-symmetry 2D materials. We show that a cavity made of such a material supports a nonreciprocal growing mode with elliptical polarization that generates an unstable resonance leading to self-sustained oscillations. Notably, we demonstrate that the chiral nature of the gain derived from the Berry dipole allows for the manipulation of the laser light's handedness by a simple reversal of the electric field bias.

An exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD) occurs when both the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of a square matrix coincide and the matrix has a nontrivial Jordan block structure. It is not easy to achieve an EPD exactly. In our prior studies, we synthesized simple conservative (lossless) circuits with evolution matrices featuring EPDs by using two LC loops coupled by a gyrator. In this paper, we advance even a simpler circuit with an EPD consisting of only two LC loops with one capacitor shared. Consequently, this circuit involves only four elements and it is perfectly reciprocal. The shared capacitance and parallel inductance are negative with values determined by explicit formulas which lead to EPD. This circuit can have the same Jordan canonical form as the nonreciprocal circuit we introduced before. This implies that the Jordan canonical form does not necessarily manifest systems' nonreciprocity. It is natural to ask how nonreciprocity is manifested in the system's spectral data. Our analysis of this issue shows that nonreciprocity is manifested explicitly in: (i) the circuit Lagrangian and (ii) the breakdown of certain symmetries in the set of eigenmodes. All our significant theoretical findings were thoroughly tested and confirmed by extensive numerical simulations using commercial circuit simulator software.

Teaching machines of scene contextual knowledge would enable them to interact more effectively with the environment and to anticipate or predict objects that may not be immediately apparent in their perceptual field. In this paper, we introduce a novel transformer-based approach called $LMOD$ ( Label-based Missing Object Detection) to teach scene contextual knowledge to machines using an attention mechanism. A distinctive aspect of the proposed approach is its reliance solely on labels from image datasets to teach scene context, entirely eliminating the need for the actual image itself. We show how scene-wide relationships among different objects can be learned using a self-attention mechanism. We further show that the contextual knowledge gained from label based learning can enhance performance of other visual based object detection algorithm.

A simple and fast model for numerically calculating small-signal gain in serpentine waveguide traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) is described. In the framework of the Pierce model, we consider one-dimensional electron flow along a dispersive single-mode slow-wave structure (SWS), accounting for the space-charge effect. The analytical model accounts for the frequency-dependent phase velocity and characteristic impedance obtained using various equivalent circuit models from the literature, validated by comparison with full-wave eigenmode simulation. The model includes a relation between the modal characteristic impedance and the interaction (Pierce) impedance of the SWS, including also an extra correction factor that accounts for the variation of the electric field distribution and hence of the interaction impedance over the beam cross section. By applying boundary conditions to our generalized Pierce model, we compute both the theoretical gain of a TWT and all the complex-valued wavenumbers of the hot modes versus frequency and compare our results with numerically intensive particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations; the good agreement in the comparison demonstrates the accuracy and simplicity of our generalized model. For various examples where we vary the average electron beam (e-beam) phase velocity, average e-beam current, number of unit cells, and input radio frequency (RF) power, we demonstrate that our model is robust in the small-signal regime., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

This paper examines recovery of the wall-shear stress of a turbulent boundary layer that has undergone a sudden transition from a rough to a smooth surface. Early works of Antonia and Luxton questioned the reliability of standard smooth-wall methods to measure wall-shear stress in such conditions, and subsequent studies show significant disagreement depending on the approach used to determine the wall-shear stress downstream. Here we address this by utilising a collection of experimental databases at Re_\tau \approx 4100 that have access to both `direct' and `indirect' measures of the wall-shear stress to understand the recovery to equilibrium conditions to the new surface. Our results reveal that the viscous region (z^+\lesssim 4) recovers almost immediately to an equilibrium state with the new wall conditions, however, the buffer region and beyond takes several boundary layer thicknesses before recovering to equilibrium conditions, which is longer than previously thought. A unique direct numerical simulation database of a wall-bounded flow with a rough-to-smooth wall transition is employed to confirm these findings. In doing so, we present evidence that any estimate of the wall-shear stress from the mean velocity profile in the buffer region or further away from the wall tends to underestimate its magnitude in the near vicinity of the rough-to-smooth transition, and this is likely to be partly responsible for the large scatter of recovery lengths to equilibrium conditions reported in the literature. Our results also reveal that the smaller energetic scales in the near-wall region recover to an equilibrium state associated with the new wall conditions within one boundary layer thickness downstream of the transition, while the larger energetic scales exhibit an over-energised state for several boundary layer thicknesses downstream of the transition.

We investigate how a single resonator with a time-modulated component extracts power from an external ambient source. However, the collected power is largely dependent on the precise choice of the modulation signal frequency. We focus on the power absorbed from external vibration using a one degree-of-freedom mechanical resonator where the damper has a time-varying component. We show that time modulation can make a significant difference in the amount of harvested power, leading to more than 10 times enhancement with respect to an analogous system without time modulation. We also find that a narrow band pair of peak and dip in the spectrum of the absorbed power occurs because of the presence of an exceptional point of degeneracy (EPD). In this narrow frequency range, the delay between the damper modulating signal and the external vibrating signal largely affects the collected power. The high frequency-selectivity of EPD-induced power management could potentially be used in sensing and spectrometer applications.

Here, we present measurements of turbulent drag reduction in boundary layers at high friction Reynolds numbers in the range of $4500 \le Re_\tau \le 15000$. The efficacy of the approach, using streamwise travelling waves of spanwise wall oscillations, is studied for two actuation regimes: (i) inner-scaled actuation (ISA), as investigated in Part 1 of this study, which targets the relatively high-frequency structures of the near-wall cycle, and (ii) outer-scaled actuation (OSA), which was recently presented by Marusic et al. (Nat. Commun., vol. 12, 2021) for high-$Re_\tau$ flows, targeting the lower-frequency, outer-scale motions. Multiple experimental techniques were used, including a floating-element balance to directly measure the skin-friction drag force, hot-wire anemometry to acquire long-time fluctuating velocity and wall-shear stress, and stereoscopic-PIV (particle image velocimetry) to measure the turbulence statistics of all three velocity components across the boundary layer. Under the ISA pathway, drag reduction of up to 25% was achieved, but mostly with net power saving losses due to the high-input power cost associated with the high-frequency actuation. The low-frequency OSA pathway, however, with its lower input power requirements, was found to consistently result in positive net power savings of 5 - 10%, for moderate drag reductions of 5 - 15%. The results suggest that OSA is an attractive pathway for energy-efficient drag reduction in high Reynolds number applications. Both ISA and OSA strategies are found to produce complex inter-scale interactions, leading to attenuation of the turbulent fluctuations across the boundary layer for a broad range of length and time scales.

Turbulent drag reduction through streamwise travelling waves of spanwise wall oscillation is investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Here, in Part 1, wall-resolved large-eddy simulations in a channel flow are conducted to examine how the frequency and wavenumber of the travelling wave influence the drag reduction at friction Reynolds numbers $Re_\tau = 951$ and $4000$. The actuation parameter space is restricted to the inner-scaled actuation (ISA) pathway, where drag reduction is achieved through direct attenuation of the near-wall scales. The level of turbulence attenuation, hence drag reduction, is found to change with the near-wall Stokes layer protrusion height $\ell_{0.01}$. A range of frequencies is identified where the Stokes layer attenuates turbulence, lifting up the cycle of turbulence generation and thickening the viscous sublayer; in this range, the drag reduction increases as $\ell_{0.01}$ increases up to $30$ viscous units. Outside this range, the strong Stokes shear strain enhances near-wall turbulence generation leading to a drop in drag reduction with increasing $\ell_{0.01}$. We further find that, within our parameter and Reynolds number space, the ISA pathway has a power cost that always exceeds any drag reduction savings. This motivates the study of the outer-scaled actuation (OSA) pathway in Part 2, where drag reduction is achieved through actuating the outer-scaled motions.

The ability to control waves at the nanoscale has attracted considerable attention to ultrathin metasurface lenses (metalenses) in optical imaging and encryption systems. We propose an approach to active tuning metasurfaces by integrating an ultrathin layer of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) into a unit cell as an electro-optically tunable material. A proposed design features two orthogonal wings that can independently manipulate waves with corresponding orthogonal polarizations. The charge carrier concentration in the ITO accumulation layer is altered by modulating the applied bias voltage. This bias voltage generates phase variations at terahertz frequencies for the reflected transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarized waves. It is possible to move both focal points of a metalens without any physical movement by varying the bias voltage. In addition, this paper explores the application of virtually moving metalens for a novel multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) communication architecture. We demonstrate a communication system based on single-point binary data communication and hexadecimal orbital angular momentum (OAM) data communication. Then, orthogonal channels can be used for MIMO communication with high capacity. The proposed design paves the way for high-speed communications as well as polarization-controlled molecular imaging systems.

We present an analytical method to compute the wavenumbers and electric fields of the space-charge-wave eigenmodes supported by a two-stream electron beam, consisting of a solid inner cylindrical stream and a coaxial outer annular stream, both contained within a cylindrical metallic tunnel.We extend the analytical model developed by Ramo to the case of two streams. The method accounts for the interaction between the two streams with the presence of the beam-tunnel wall; it can be used to model the complex wavenumbers associated with the two-stream instability and the plasma frequency reduction effects in vacuum electronic amplifiers and other vacuum electronic devices., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures
