We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. We present new VLTI/GRAVITY near-infrared interferometric measurements of the angular size of the innermost hot dust continuum for 14 type 1 AGNs. The angular sizes are resolved on scales of ~0.7 mas and the inferred ring radii range from 0.028 to 1.33 pc, comparable to those reported previously and a factor 10-20 smaller than the mid-infrared sizes in the literature. Combining our new data with previously published values, we compile a sample of 25 AGN with bolometric luminosity ranging from $10^{42}$ to $10^{47} \rm erg~s^{-1}$, with which we study the radius-luminosity (R-L) relation for the hot dust structure. Our interferometric measurements of radius are offset by a factor 2 from the equivalent relation derived through reverberation mapping. Using a simple model to explore the dust structure's geometry, we conclude that this offset can be explained if the 2 um emitting surface has a concave shape. Our data show that the slope of the relation is in line with the canonical $R \propto L^{0.5}$ when using an appropriately non-linear correction for bolometric luminosity. In contrast, using optical luminosity or applying a constant bolometric correction to it results in a significant deviation in the slope, suggesting a potential luminosity dependence on the spectral energy distribution. Over four orders of magnitude in luminosity, the intrinsic scatter around the R-L relation is 0.2 dex, suggesting a tight correlation between innermost hot dust structure size and the AGN luminosity., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present JWST/MIRI MRS spatially resolved $\sim 5-28\,\mu$m observations of the central ~4-8kpc of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy and broad absorption line quasar Mrk231. These are part of the Mid-Infrared Characterization of Nearby Iconic galaxy Centers (MICONIC) program of the MIRI European Consortium guaranteed time observations. No high excitation lines (i.e., [MgV] at 5.61$\mu$m or [NeV] at 14.32$\mu$m) typically associated with the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) are detected in the nuclear region of Mrk231. This is likely due to the intrinsically X-ray weak nature of its quasar. Some intermediate ionization potential lines, for instance, [ArIII] at 8.99$\mu$m and [SIV] at 10.51$\mu$m, are not detected either, even though they are clearly observed in a star-forming region ~920pc south-east of the AGN. Thus, the strong nuclear mid-infrared (mid-IR) continuum is also in part hampering the detection of faint lines in the nuclear region. The nuclear [NeIII]/[NeII]line ratio is consistent with values observed in star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we resolve for the first time the nuclear starburst in the mid-IR low-excitation line emission (size of ~400pc, FWHM). Several pieces of evidence also indicate that it is partly obscured even at these wavelengths. At the AGN position, the ionized and warm molecular gas emission lines have modest widths (W_80~300km/s). There are, however, weak blueshifted wings reaching velocities v_02~-400km/s in [NeII]. The nuclear starburst is at the center of a large (~8kpc), massive rotating disk with widely-spread, low velocity outflows. Given the high star formation rate of Mrk231, we speculate that part of the nuclear outflows and the large-scale non-circular motions observed in the mid-IR are driven by its powerful nuclear starburst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The ionisation cones of NGC5728 have a deficit of molecular gas based on millimetre observations of CO(2-1) emission. Although photoionisation from the active nucleus may lead to suppression of this transition, warm molecular gas can still be present. We report the detection of eight mid-infrared rotational H$_2$ lines throughout the central kiloparsec, including the ionisation cones, using integral field spectroscopic observations with JWST/MIRI MRS. The H$_2$ line ratios, characteristic of a power-law temperature distribution, indicate that the gas is warmest where it enters the ionisation cone through disk rotation, suggestive of shock excitation. In the nucleus, where the data can be combined with an additional seven ro-vibrational H$_2$ transitions, we find that moderate velocity (30 km s$^{-1}$) shocks in dense ($10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) gas, irradiated by an external UV field ($G_0 = 10^3$), do provide a good match to the full set. The warm molecular gas in the ionisation cone that is traced by the H$_2$ rotational lines has been heated to temperatures $>200$ K. Outside of the ionisation cone the molecular gas kinematics are undisturbed. However, within the ionisation cone, the kinematics are substantially perturbed, indicative of a radial flow, but one that is quantitatively different from the ionised lines. We argue that this outflow is in the plane of the disk, implying a short 50 pc acceleration zone up to speeds of about 400 km s$^{-1}$ followed by an extended deceleration over $\sim$700 pc where it terminates. The deceleration is due to both the radially increasing galaxy mass, and mass-loading as ambient gas in the disk is swept up., Comment: A&A accepted; 16 pages

The superb image quality, stability and sensitivity of the JWST permit deconvolution techniques to be pursued with a fidelity unavailable to ground-based observations. We present an assessment of several deconvolution approaches to improve image quality and mitigate effects of the complex JWST point spread function (PSF). The optimal deconvolution method is determined by using WebbPSF to simulate JWST's complex PSF and MIRISim to simulate multi-band JWST/Mid-Infrared Imager Module (MIRIM) observations of a toy model of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Five different deconvolution algorithms are tested: (1) Kraken deconvolution, (2) Richardson-Lucy, (3) Adaptive Imaging Deconvolution Algorithm, (4) Sparse regularization with the Condat-V\~u algorithm, and (5) Iterative Wiener Filtering and Thresholding. We find that Kraken affords the greatest FWHM reduction of the nuclear source of our MIRISim observations for the toy AGN model while retaining good photometric integrity across all simulated wavebands. Applying Kraken to Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) multi-band JWST/MIRIM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, we find that the algorithm reduces the FWHM of the nuclear source by a factor of 1.6-2.2 across all five filters. Kraken images facilitate detection of a SE to NW $\thicksim$2".5 ($\thicksim$470 pc, PA $\simeq$115\deg) extended nuclear emission, especially in the longest wavelengths. We use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of a sample of six local obscured type 1.9/2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) to compare their nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with the level of nuclear obscuration traced by X-rays. This study is the first to use sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local obscured AGN to investigate the nuclear mid-IR absorption bands with a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 $\mu$m). All the nuclei show the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate band in absorption. We compare the strength of the 9.7 and 18 $\mu$m silicate features with torus model predictions. The observed silicate features are generally well explained by clumpy and smooth torus models. We report the detection of the 6 $\mu$m dirty water ice band (i.e., a mix of water and other molecules such as CO and CO$_2$) at sub-arcsecond scales ($\sim$0.26 arcsec at 6 $\mu$m; inner $\sim$50 pc) in a sample of local AGN with different levels of nuclear obscuration in the range log N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$(cm$^{-2}$)$\sim22-25$. We find a good correlation between the 6 $\mu$m water ice optical depths and N$_{\rm H}^{\rm X-Ray}$. This result indicates that the water ice absorption might be a reliable tracer of the nuclear intrinsic obscuration in AGN. The weak water ice absorption in less obscured AGN (log N$_H^{X-ray}$ (cm$^{-2}$)$\lesssim$23.0 cm$^{-2}$) might be related to the hotter dust temperature ($>$T$_{sub}^{H_2O}\sim$110 K) expected to be reached in the outer layers of the torus due to their more inhomogeneous medium. Our results suggest it might be necessary to include the molecular content, such as, H$_2$O, aliphatic hydrocarbons (CH-) and more complex PAH molecules in torus models to better constrain key parameters such as the torus covering factor (i.e. nuclear obscuration)., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 13 pages, 12 Figures

[Full abstract in the paper] We aim to better constrain the atmospheric properties of the directly imaged exoplanet 51~Eri~b by using a retrieval approach on higher signal-to-noise data than previously reported. In this context, we also compare the results of using the atmospheric retrieval code \texttt{petitRADTRANS} vs a self-consistent model to fit atmospheric parameters. We present a higher signal-to-noise $YH$ spectrum of the planet and revised $K1K2$ photometry (M$_{K1} = 15.11 \pm 0.04$ mag, M$_{K2} = 17.11 \pm 0.38$ mag). The best-fit parameters obtained using an atmospheric retrieval differ from previous results using self-consistent models. In general, we find that our solutions tend towards cloud-free atmospheres (e.g. log $\tau_{\rm clouds} = -5.20 \pm 1.44$). For our ``nominal'' model with new data, we find a lower metallicity ([Fe/H] $= 0.26\pm$0.30 dex) and C/O ratio ($0.38\pm0.09$), and a slightly higher effective temperature (T$_{\rm{eff}} = 807\pm$45 K) than previous studies. The surface gravity (log $g = 4.05\pm0.37$) is in agreement with the reported values in the literature within uncertainties. We estimate the mass of the planet to be between 2 and 4 M$_{\rm{Jup}}$. When comparing with self-consistent models, we encounter a known correlation between the presence of clouds and the shape of the $P-T$ profiles. This work focuses on active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and the relation between the sizes of the hot dust continuum and the broad-line region (BLR). We find that the continuum size measured using optical/near-infrared interferometry (OI) is roughly twice that measured by reverberation mapping (RM). Both OI and RM continuum sizes show a tight relation with the H$\beta$ BLR size with only an intrinsic scatter of 0.25 dex. The masses of supermassive black holes (BHs) can hence be simply derived from a dust size in combination with a broad line width and virial factor. Since the primary uncertainty of these BH masses comes from the virial factor, the accuracy of the continuum-based BH masses is close to those based on the RM measurement of the broad emission line. Moreover, the necessary continuum measurements can be obtained on a much shorter timescale than those required monitoring for RM, and are also more time efficient than those needed to resolve the BLR with OI. The primary goal of this work is to demonstrate measuring the BH mass based on the dust continuum size with our first calibration of the $R_\mathrm{BLR}$-$R_\mathrm{d}$ relation. The current limitation and caveats are discussed in detail. SPHERE+ is a proposed upgrade of the SPHERE instrument at the VLT, which is intended to boost the current performances of detection and characterization for exoplanets and disks. SPHERE+ will also serve as a demonstrator for the future planet finder (PCS) of the European ELT. The main science drivers for SPHERE+ are 1/ to access the bulk of the young giant planet population down to the snow line ($3-10$ au), to bridge the gap with complementary techniques (radial velocity, astrometry); 2/ to observe fainter and redder targets in the youngest ($1-10$\,Myr) associations compared to those observed with SPHERE to directly study the formation of giant planets in their birth environment; 3/ to improve the level of characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres by increasing the spectral resolution in order to break degeneracies in giant planet atmosphere models. Achieving these objectives requires to increase the bandwidth of the xAO system (from $\sim$1 to 3\,kHz) as well as the sensitivity in the infrared (2 to 3\,mag). These features will be brought by a second stage AO system optimized in the infrared with a pyramid wavefront sensor. As a new science instrument, a medium resolution integral field spectrograph will provide a spectral resolution from 1000 to 5000 in the J and H bands. Characterization of directly imaged exoplanets is one of the most eagerly anticipated science functions of the James Webb Space Telescope. MIRI, the mid-IR instrument has the capability to provide unique spatially resolved photometric data points in a spectral range never achieved so far for such objects. We aim to present the very first on-sky contrast measurements of the MIRI's coronagraphs. In addition to a classical Lyot coronagraph at the longest wavelength, this observing mode implements the concept of the four quadrant phase mask for the very first time in a space telescope. We observed single stars together with a series of reference stars to measure raw contrasts as they are delivered on the detector, as well as reference subtracted contrasts. MIRI's coronagraphs achieve raw contrasts greater than $10^3$ at the smallest angular separations (within $1''$) and about $10^5$ further out (beyond $5\sim6''$). Subtracting the residual diffracted light left unattenuated by the coronagraph has the potential to bring the final contrast down to the background and detector limited noise floor at most angular separations (a few times $10^4$ at less than $1''$). MIRI coronagraphs behave as expected from simulations. In particular the raw contrasts for all four coronagraphs are fully consistent with the diffractive model. Contrasts obtained with subtracting reference stars also meet expectations and are fully demonstrated for two four quadrant phase masks (F1065C and F1140C). The worst contrast, measured at F1550C, is very likely due to a variation of the phase aberrations at the primary mirror during the observations, and not an issue of the coronagraph itself. We did not perform reference star subtraction with the Lyot mask at F2300C, but we anticipate that it would bring the contrast down to the noise floor., Comment: submitted to A&A

Aims. This work aims at constraining the masses and separations of potential substellar companions to five accelerating stars (HIP 1481, HIP 88399, HIP 96334, HIP 30314 and HIP 116063) using multiple data sets acquired with different techniques. Methods. Our targets were originally observed as part of the SPHERE/SHINE survey, and radial velocity (RV) archive data were also available for four of the five objects. No companions were originally detected in any of these data sets, but the presence of significant proper motion anomalies (PMa) for all the stars strongly suggested the presence of a companion. Combining the information from the PMa with the limits derived from the RV and SPHERE data, we were able to put constraints on the characteristics of the unseen companions. Results. Our analysis led to relatively strong constraints for both HIP 1481 and HIP 88399, narrowing down the companion masses to 2-5 M_Jup and 3-5 M_Jup and separations within 2-15 au and 3-9 au, respectively. Because of the large age uncertainties for HIP 96334, the poor observing conditions for the SPHERE epochs of HIP 30314 and the lack of RV data for HIP 116063, the results for these targets were not as well defined, but we were still able to constrain the properties of the putative companions within a reasonable confidence level. Conclusions. For all five targets, our analysis has revealed that the companions responsible for the PMa signal would be well within reach for future instruments planned for the ELT (e.g., MICADO), which would easily achieve the required contrast and angular resolution. Context. HD 95086 is a young nearby Solar System analog hosting a giant exoplanet orbiting at 57 au from the star between an inner and outer debris belt. The existence of additional planets has been suggested as the mechanism that maintains the broad cavity between the two belts. Aims. We present a dedicated monitoring of HD 95086 with the VLT/SPHERE instrument to refine the orbital and atmospheric properties of HD 95086 b, and to search for additional planets in this system. Methods. SPHERE observations, spread over ten epochs from 2015 to 2019 and including five new datasets, were used. Combined with archival observations, from VLT/NaCo (2012-2013) and Gemini/GPI (2013-2016), the extended set of astrometric measurements allowed us to refine the orbital properties of HD 95086 b. We also investigated the spectral properties and the presence of a circumplanetary disk around HD 95086 b by using the special fitting tool exploring the diversity of several atmospheric models. In addition, we improved our detection limits in order to search for a putative planet c via the K-Stacker algorithm. Results. We extracted for the first time the JH low-resolution spectrum of HD 95086 b by stacking the six best epochs, and confirm its very red spectral energy distribution. Combined with additional datasets from GPI and NaCo, our analysis indicates that this very red color can be explained by the presence of a circumplanetary disk around planet b, with a range of high-temperature solutions (1400-1600 K) and significant extinction (Av > 10 mag), or by a super-solar metallicity atmosphere with lower temperatures (800-1300 K), and small to medium amount of extinction (Av < 10 mag). Context. Protoplanetary disks around young stars often contain substructures like rings, gaps, and spirals that could be caused by interactions between the disk and forming planets. Aims. We aim to study the young (1-3 Myr) star DR Tau in the near-infrared and characterize its disk, which was previously resolved through sub-millimeter interferometry with ALMA, and to search for possible sub-stellar companions embedded into it. Methods. We observed DR Tau with VLT/SPHERE both in polarized light (H broad band) and total intensity (in Y, J, H, and K spectral bands). We also performed L' band observations with LBTI/LMIRCam on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Results. We found two previously undetected spirals extending north-east and south of the star, respectively. We further detected an arc-like structure north of the star. Finally a bright, compact and elongated structure was detected at separation of 303 +/- 10 mas and position angle 21.2 +/- 3.7 degrees, just at the root of the north-east spiral arm. Since this feature is visible both in polarized light and in total intensity and has a flat spectrum it is likely caused by stellar light scattered by dust. Conclusions. The two spiral arms are at different separation from the star, have very different pitch angles, and are separated by an apparent discontinuity, suggesting they might have a different origin. The very open southern spiral arm might be caused by infalling material from late encounters with cloudlets into the formation environment of the star itself. The compact feature could be caused by interaction with a planet in formation still embedded in its dust envelope and it could be responsible for launching the north-east spiral. The angular size of the broad line region (BLR) of the nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 3783 has been spatially resolved by recent observations with VLTI/GRAVITY. A reverberation mapping (RM) campaign has also recently obtained high quality light curves and measured the linear size of the BLR in a way that is complementary to the GRAVITY measurement. The size and kinematics of the BLR can be better constrained by a joint analysis that combines both GRAVITY and RM data. This, in turn, allows us to obtain the mass of the supermassive black hole in NGC3783 with an accuracy that is about a factor of two better than that inferred from GRAVITY data alone. We derive $M_\mathrm{BH}=2.54_{-0.72}^{+0.90}\times 10^7\,M_\odot$. Finally, and perhaps most notably, we are able to measure a geometric distance to NGC 3783 of $39.9^{+14.5}_{-11.9}$ Mpc. We are able to test the robustness of the BLR-based geometric distance with measurements based on the Tully-Fisher relation and other indirect methods. We find the geometric distance is consistent with other methods within their scatter. We explore the potential of BLR-based geometric distances to directly constrain the Hubble constant, $H_0$, and identify differential phase uncertainties as the current dominant limitation to the $H_0$ measurement precision for individual sources., Comment: 9 pages and 5 figures in main text, Accepted for publication in A&A

We compare mid-IR and ALMA far-IR images of 12 nearby Seyferts selected from GATOS. The mid-IR unresolved emission contributes more than 60% of the nuclear emission in most galaxies. By contrast, the ALMA 870micron continuum emission is mostly resolved and typically along the torus equatorial direction (Paper I, Garcia-Burillo et al. 2021). The Eddington ratios and nuclear hydrogen column densities NH of half the sample are favorable to launching polar and/or equatorial dusty winds, according to simulations. Six show mid-IR extended emission in the polar direction as traced by the NLR and perpendicular to the ALMA emission. In a few, the nuclear NH might be too high to uplift large quantities of dusty material along the polar direction. Five galaxies have low NH and/or Eddington ratios and thus polar dusty winds are not likely. We generate new CAT3D-WIND disk-wind model images. At low wind-to-disk cloud ratios the far-IR model images have disk- and ring-like morphologies. The X-shape associated with dusty winds is seen better in the far-IR at intermediate-high inclinations for the extended-wind configurations. In most models, the mid-IR emission comes from the inner part of the disk/cone. Extended bi-conical and one-sided polar mid-IR emission is seen in extended-wind configurations and high wind-to-disk cloud ratios. When convolved to our resolution, the model images reproduce qualitative aspects of the observed morphologies. Low-intermediate wind-to-disk ratios are required to account for the large fractions of unresolved mid-IR emission. This work and Paper I provide observational support for the torus+wind scenario. The wind component is more relevant at high Eddington ratios and/or AGN luminosities, and polar dust emission is predicted at NH of up to $10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$. We present the first results of the Galaxy Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS), a project aimed at understanding the properties of the dusty molecular tori and their connection to the host galaxy in nearby Seyfert galaxies. Our project expands the range of AGN luminosities and Eddington ratios covered by previous surveys of Seyferts conducted by ALMA and allows us to study the gas feeding and feedback cycle in a combined sample of 19 Seyferts. We used ALMA to obtain new images of the emission of molecular gas and dust using the CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines as well as their underlying continuum emission at 870 microns with high spatial resolutions (0.1'' ~ 7 - 13 pc) in the CND of 10 nearby (D < 28 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. Our new ALMA observations detect 870 micron continuum and CO line emission from spatially resolved disks located around the AGN in all the sources. The bulk of the continuum flux can be accounted for by thermal emission from dust in the majority of the targets. For most of the sources the disks show a preponderant orientation perpendicular to the AGN wind axes, as expected for dusty molecular tori. The median diameters and molecular gas masses of the tori are ~ 42 pc, and ~ 6 x 10**5 Msun, respectively. We find a positive correlation between the line-of-sight gas column densities responsible for the absorption of X-rays and the molecular gas column densities derived from CO towards the AGN in our sources. The radial distributions of molecular gas in the CND of our combined sample show signs of nuclear-scale molecular gas deficits. We also detect molecular outflows in the sources that show the most extreme nuclear-scale gas deficits in our sample. We present the multiple stellar systems observed within the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanet (SHINE). SHINE searched for substellar companions to young stars using high contrast imaging. Although stars with known stellar companions within SPHERE field of view (<5.5 arcsec) were removed from the original target list, we detected additional stellar companions to 78 of the 463 SHINE targets observed so far. 27% of the systems have three or more components. Given the heterogeneity of the sample in terms of observing conditions and strategy, tailored routines were used for data reduction and analysis, some of which were specifically designed for these data sets. We then combined SPHERE data with literature and archival ones, TESS light curves and Gaia parallaxes and proper motions, to characterise these systems as completely as possible. Combining all data, we were able to constrain the orbits of 25 systems. We carefully assessed the completeness of our sample for the separation range 50-500 mas (period range a few years - a few tens of years), taking into account the initial selection biases and recovering part of the systems excluded from the original list due to their multiplicity. This allowed us to compare the binary frequency for our sample with previous studies and highlight some interesting trends in the mass ratio and period distribution. We also found that, for the few objects for which such estimate was possible, the values of the masses derived from dynamical arguments were in good agreement with the model predictions. Stellar and orbital spins appear fairly well aligned for the 12 stars having enough data, which favour a disk fragmentation origin. Our results highlight the importance of combining different techniques when tackling complex problems such as the formation of binaries and show how large samples can be useful for more than one purpose., Comment: 59 pages, 11 tables, 18 figures

Over the past decades, direct imaging has confirmed the existence of substellar companions (exoplanets or brown dwarfs) on wide orbits (>10 au) from their host stars. To understand their formation and evolution mechanisms, we have initiated in 2015 the SPHERE infrared survey for exoplanets (SHINE), a systematic direct imaging survey of young, nearby stars to explore their demographics.} {We aim to detect and characterize the population of giant planets and brown dwarfs beyond the snow line around young, nearby stars. Combined with the survey completeness, our observations offer the opportunity to constrain the statistical properties (occurrence, mass and orbital distributions, dependency on the stellar mass) of these young giant planets.} {In this study, we present the observing and data analysis strategy, the ranking process of the detected candidates, and the survey performances for a subsample of 150 stars, which are representative of the full SHINE sample. The observations were conducted in an homogeneous way from February 2015 to February 2017 with the dedicated ground-based VLT/SPHERE instrument equipped with the IFS integral field spectrograph and the IRDIS dual-band imager covering a spectral range between 0.9 and 2.3 $\mu$m. We used coronographic, angular and spectral differential imaging techniques to reach the best detection performances for this study down to the planetary mass regime.}

FIRST (Fibered Imager foR a Single Telescope instrument) is a post-AO instrument that enables high contrast imaging and spectroscopy at spatial scales below the diffraction limit. FIRST achieves sensitivity and accuracy by a unique combination of sparse aperture masking, spatial filtering by single-mode fibers and cross-dispersion in the visible. The telescope pupil is divided into sub-pupils by an array of microlenses, coupling the light into single-mode fibers. The output of the fibers are rearranged in a non redundant configuration, allowing the measurement of the complex visibility for every baseline over the 600-900 nm spectral range. A first version of this instrument is currently integrated to the Subaru Extreme AO bench (SCExAO). This paper focuses on the on-going instrument upgrades and testings, which aim at increasing the instrument's stability and sensitivity, thus improving the dynamic range. FIRSTv2's interferometric scheme is based on a photonic chip beam combiner. We report on the laboratory characterization of two different types of 5-input beam combiner with enhanced throughput. The interferometric recombination of each pair of sub-pupils is encoded on a single output. Thus, to sample the fringes we implemented a temporal phase modulation by pistoning the segmented mirrors of a Micro-ElectroMechanical System (MEMS). Polarisation is a decisive method to study the inner region of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) since it is not affected by contrast issues similarly to how classical imaging is. When coupled to high angular resolution (HAR), polarisation can help to disentangle the location of the various polarising mechanisms and then give an insight on the physics taking place on the core of AGNs. We obtained a new data set of HAR polarimetric images of the archetypal Seyfert 2 nucleus of NGC 1068 observed with SPHERE/VLT and we aim in this paper at presenting the polarisation maps and at spatially separating the location of the polarising mechanisms, thus deriving constraints on the organisation of the dust material in the inner region of this AGN. We then compared these measurements to radiative transfer simulations of scattering and dichroic absorption processes, using the Monte-Carlo code MontAGN. We establish a detailed table of the relative importance of the polarising mechanism as a function of the aperture and of the wavelength. We are able to separate the dominant polarising mechanisms in the three regions of the ionisation cone, the extended envelop of the torus and the very central bright source of the AGN. Thus, we estimate the contribution of the different polarisation mechanisms to the observed polarisation flux in these regions. Dichroic absorption is estimated to be responsible for about 99 % of the polarised flux coming from the photo-centre. However, this contribution would be restricted to this location only, double scattering process being the most important contributor to polarisation in the equatorial plane of the AGN and single scattering being dominant in the polar outflow bi-cone.

Using VLTI/GRAVITY and SINFONI data, we investigate the sub-pc gas and dust structure around the nearby type 1 AGN hosted by NGC 3783. The K-band coverage of GRAVITY uniquely allows a simultaneous analysis of the size and kinematics of the broad line region (BLR), the size and structure of the near-IR continuum emitting hot dust, and the size of the coronal line region (CLR). We find the BLR probed through broad Br$\gamma$ emission is well described by a rotating, thick disk with a radial distribution of clouds peaking in the inner region. In our BLR model the physical mean radius of 16 light days is nearly twice the 10 day time lag that would be measured, which matches very well the 10 day time lag that has been measured by reverberation mapping. We measure a hot dust FWHM size of 0.74 mas (0.14 pc) and further reconstruct an image of the hot dust which reveals a faint (5% of the total flux) offset cloud which we interpret as an accreting cloud heated by the central AGN. Finally, we directly measure the FWHM size of the nuclear CLR as traced by the [CaVIII] and narrow Br$\gamma$ line. We find a FWHM size of 2.2 mas (0.4 pc), fully in line with the expectation of the CLR located between the BLR and narrow line region. Combining all of these measurements together with larger scale near-IR integral field unit and mid-IR interferometry data, we are able to comprehensively map the structure and dynamics of gas and dust from 0.01--100 pc., Comment: 20 pages and 18 figures in main text, Accepted for publication in A&A

Sirius-like systems are wide binaries composed of a white dwarf (WD) and a companion of a spectral type earlier than M0. The WD progenitor evolves in isolation, but its wind during the AGB phase pollutes the companion surface and transfers some angular momentum. Within SHINE survey that uses SPHERE at the VLT, we acquired images of HD2133, HD114174, and CD-567708 and combined this data with high resolution spectra of the primaries, TESS, and literature data. We performed accurate abundance analyses for the MS. We found brighter J and K magnitudes for HD114174B than obtained previously and extended the photometry down to 0.95 micron. Our new data indicate a higher temperature and then shorter cooling age (5.57+/-0.02 Gyr) and larger mass (0.75+/-0.03 Mo) for this WD than previously assumed. This solved the discrepancy previously found with the age of the MS star. The two other WDs are less massive, indicating progenitors of ~1.3 Mo and 1.5-1.8 Mo for HD2133B and CD-56 7708B, respectively. We were able to derive constraints on the orbit for HD114174 and CD-56 7708. The composition of the MS stars agrees fairly well with expectations from pollution by the AGB progenitors of the WDs: HD2133A has a small enrichment of n-capture elements, which is as expected for pollution by an AGB star with a mass <1.5 Mo; CD-56 7708A is a previously unrecognized mild Ba-star, which is expected due to pollution by an AGB star with a mass in the range of 1.5-3.0 Mo; and HD114174 has a very moderate excess of n-capture elements, which is in agreement with the expectation for a massive AGB star to have a mass >3.0 Mo. On the other hand, none of these stars show the excesses of C that are expected to go along with those of n-capture elements. We present new near-infrared VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric spectra that spatially resolve the broad Br$\gamma$ emission line in the nucleus of the active galaxy IRAS 09149-6206. We use these data to measure the size of the broad line region (BLR) and estimate the mass of the central black hole. Using an improved phase calibration method that reduces the differential phase uncertainty to 0.05 degree per baseline across the spectrum, we detect a differential phase signal that reaches a maximum of ~0.5 degree between the line and continuum. This represents an offset of ~120 $\mu$as (0.14 pc) between the BLR and the centroid of the hot dust distribution traced by the 2.3 $\mu$m continuum. The offset is well within the dust sublimation region, which matches the measured ~0.6 mas (0.7 pc) diameter of the continuum. A clear velocity gradient, almost perpendicular to the offset, is traced by the reconstructed photocentres of the spectral channels of the Br$\gamma$ line. We infer the radius of the BLR to be ~65 $\mu$as (0.075 pc), which is consistent with the radius-luminosity relation of nearby active galactic nuclei derived based on the time lag of the H$\beta$ line from reverberation mapping campaigns. Our dynamical modelling indicates the black hole mass is $\sim 1\times10^8\,M_\odot$, which is a little below, but consistent with, the standard $M_{\rm BH}$-$\sigma_*$ relation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 14 pages, 11 figures in main text

SPHERE (Beuzit et al,. 2019) has now been in operation at the VLT for more than 5 years, demonstrating a high level of performance. SPHERE has produced outstanding results using a variety of operating modes, primarily in the field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems, focusing on exoplanets as point sources and circumstellar disks as extended objects. The achievements obtained thus far with SPHERE (~200 refereed publications) in different areas (exoplanets, disks, solar system, stellar physics...) have motivated a large consortium to propose an even more ambitious set of science cases, and its corresponding technical implementation in the form of an upgrade. The SPHERE+ project capitalizes on the expertise and lessons learned from SPHERE to push high contrast imaging performance to its limits on the VLT 8m-telescope. The scientific program of SPHERE+ described in this document will open a new and compelling scientific window for the upcoming decade in strong synergy with ground-based facilities (VLT/I, ELT, ALMA, and SKA) and space missions (Gaia, JWST, PLATO and WFIRST). While SPHERE has sampled the outer parts of planetary systems beyond a few tens of AU, SPHERE+ will dig into the inner regions around stars to reveal and characterize by mean of spectroscopy the giant planet population down to the snow line. Building on SPHERE's scientific heritage and resounding success, SPHERE+ will be a dedicated survey instrument which will strengthen the leadership of ESO and the European community in the very competitive field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems. We present near-infrared interferometric data on the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, obtained with the GRAVITY instrument on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The extensive baseline coverage from 5 to 60 M\lambda allowed us to reconstruct a continuum image of the nucleus with an unrivaled 0.2 pc resolution in the K-band. We find a thin ring-like structure of emission with a radius r = 0.24+/-0.03 pc, inclination i = 70+/-5 deg, position angle PA = -50+/-4 deg, and h/r < 0.14, which we associate with the dust sublimation region. The observed morphology is inconsistent with the expected signatures of a geometrically and optically thick torus. Instead, the infrared emission shows a striking resemblance to the 22 GHz maser disc, which suggests they share a common region of origin. The near-infrared spectral energy distribution indicates a bolometric luminosity of (0.4-4.7) x 10^45 erg/s, behind a large A_K ~ 5.5 (A_V ~ 90) screen of extinction that also appears to contribute significantly to obscuring the broad line region., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 13 pages with 7 figures

Context. PDS 70 is a young (5.4 Myr), nearby (~113 pc) star hosting a known transition disk with a large gap. Recent observations with SPHERE and NACO in the near-infrared (NIR) allowed us to detect a planetary mass companion, PDS70b, within the disk cavity. Moreover, observations in H_alpha with MagAO and MUSE revealed emission associated to PDS70b and to another new companion candidate, PDS70c, at a larger separation from the star. Aims. Our aim is to confirm the discovery of the second planet PDS70c using SPHERE at VLT, to further characterize its physical properties, and search for additional point sources in this young planetary system. Methods. We re-analyzed archival SPHERE NIR observations and obtained new data in Y, J, H and K spectral bands for a total of four different epochs. The data were reduced using the data reduction and handling pipeline and the SPHERE data center. We then applied custom routines (e.g. ANDROMEDA and PACO) to subtract the starlight. Results. We re-detect both PDS 70 b and c and confirm that PDS70c is gravitationally bound to the star. We estimate this second planet to be less massive than 5 M Jup and with a T_eff around 900 K. Also, it has a low gravity with log g between 3.0 and 3.5 dex. In addition, a third object has been identified at short separation (~0.12") from the star and gravitationally bound to the star. Its spectrum is however very blue, so that we are probably seeing stellar light reflected by dust and our analysis seems to demonstrate that it is a feature of the inner disk. We, however, cannot completely exclude the possibility that it is a planetary mass object enshrouded by a dust envelope. In this latter case, its mass should be of the order of few tens of M_Earth. We use VLTI/GRAVITY near-infrared interferometry measurements of 8 bright, Type 1 AGN to study the size and structure of hot dust heated by the central engine. We partially resolve each source, and report Gaussian FWHM sizes in the range 0.3-0.8 milliarcseconds. In all but one object, we find no evidence for significant elongation or asymmetry (closure phases < 1 deg). The effective physical radius increases with bolometric luminosity as found from past reverberation and interferometry measurements. The measured sizes for Seyfert galaxies are systematically larger than for the two quasars in our sample when measured relative to the previously reported R ~ L^1/2 relationship explained by emission at the sublimation radius. The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) will be the first high-performance stellar coronagraph using active wavefront control for deep starlight suppression in space, providing unprecedented levels of contrast, spatial resolution, and sensitivity for astronomical observations in the optical. One science case enabled by the CGI will be taking images and(R~50)spectra of faint interplanetary dust structures present in the habitable zone of nearby sunlike stars (~10 pc) and within the snow-line of more distant ones(~20pc), down to dust density levels commensurate with that of the solar system zodiacal cloud. Reaching contrast levels below~10-7 for the first time, CGI will cross an important threshold in debris disks physics, accessing disks with low enough optical depths that their structure is dominated by transport phenomena than collisions. Hence, CGI results will be crucial for determining how exozodiacal dust grains are produced and transported in low-density disks around mature stars. Additionally, CGI will be able to measure the brightness level and constrain the degree of asymmetry of exozodiacal clouds around individual nearby sunlike stars in the optical, at the ~10x solar zodiacal emission level. This information will be extremely valuable for optimizing the observational strategy of possible future exo-Earth direct imaging missions, especially those planning to operate at optical wavelengths, such as Habitable Exoplanet Observatory (HabEx) and the Large Ultraviolet/Optical/Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR)., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We investigate the fueling and the feedback of nuclear activity in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068, by studying the distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the torus and its connections. We use ALMA to image the emission of a set of molecular gas tracers in the circumnuclear disk (CND) and the torus of the galaxy using the CO(2-1), CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines with spatial resolutions ~0.03"-0.09"(2-6pc). ALMA resolves the CND as an asymmetric ringed disk of D~400pc-size and mass of ~1.4x10^8 Msun. The inner edge of the ring is associated with edge-brightened arcs of NIR polarized emission identified with the working surface of the AGN ionized wind. ALMA proves the existence of a molecular torus of M_torus ~ 3x10^5Msun, which extends over a large range of spatial scales D=10-30pc around the central engine. The new observations evidence the density radial stratification of the torus: the HCO+(4-3) torus, with a full size D=11pc, is a factor of 2-3 smaller than its CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) counterparts, which have full-sizes D=26pc and D=28pc, respectively. The torus is connected to the CND through a network of gas streamers. The kinematics of molecular gas show strong departures from circular motions in the torus, the gas streamers, and the CND. These velocity distortions are interconnected and are part of a 3D outflow that reflects the effects of AGN feedback on the kinematics of molecular gas across a wide range of spatial scales. We conclude that a wide-angle AGN wind launched from the accretion disk is impacting a sizeable fraction of the gas inside the torus (~0.4-0.6 x M_torus). However, a large gas reservoir (~1.2-1.8 x 10^5Msun) close to the equatorial plane of the torus remains unaffected by the AGN wind and can continue fueling the AGN for ~1-4Myr. HD163296 is a Herbig Ae/Be star known to host a protoplanetary disk with a ringed structure. To explain the disk features, previous works proposed the presence of planets embedded into the disk. We have observed HD163296 with the near-infrared (NIR) branch of SPHERE composed by IRDIS and IFS with the aim to put tight constraints on the presence of substellar companions around this star. Despite the low rotation of the field of view during our observation we were able to put upper mass limits of few M_Jup around this object. These limits do not allow to give any definitive conclusion about the planets proposed through the disk characteristics. On the other hand, our results seem to exclude the presence of the only candidate proposed until now using direct imaging in the NIR even if some caution has to be taken considered the different wavelength bands of the two observations., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS, 11 pages, 7 figures

High contrast imaging enables the determination of orbital parameters for substellar companions (planets, brown dwarfs) from the observed relative astrometry and the estimation of model and age-dependent masses from their observed magnitudes or spectra. Combining astrometric positions with radial velocity gives direct constraints on the orbit and on the dynamical masses of companions. A brown dwarf was discovered with the VLT/SPHERE instrument in 2017, which orbits at $\sim$ 11 au around HD 206893. Its mass was estimated between 12 and 50 $M_{Jup}$ from evolutionary models and its photometry. However, given the significant uncertainty on the age of the system and the peculiar spectrophotometric properties of the companion, this mass is not well constrained. We aim at constraining the orbit and dynamical mass of HD 206893 B. We combined radial velocity data obtained with HARPS spectra and astrometric data obtained with the high contrast imaging VLT/SPHERE and VLT/NaCo instruments, with a time baseline less than three years. We then combined those data with astrometry data obtained by Hipparcos and Gaia with a time baseline of 24 years. We used a MCMC approach to estimate the orbital parameters and dynamical mass of the brown dwarf from those data. We infer a period between 21 and 33{\deg} and an inclination in the range 20-41{\deg} from pole-on from HD 206893 B relative astrometry. The RV data show a significant RV drift over 1.6 yrs. We show that HD 206893 B cannot be the source of this observed RV drift as it would lead to a dynamical mass inconsistent with its photometry and spectra and with Hipparcos and Gaia data. An additional inner (semimajor axis in the range 1.4-2.6 au) and massive ($\sim$ 15 $M_{Jup}$) companion is needed to explain the RV drift, which is compatible with the available astrometric data of the star, as well as with the VLT/SPHERE and VLT/NaCo nondetection., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

Context. The 51 Eridani system harbors a complex architecture with its primary star forming a hierarchical system with the binary GJ 3305AB at a projected separation of 2000 au, a giant planet orbiting the primary star at 13 au, and a low-mass debris disk around the primary star with possibly a cold component and a warm component inferred from the spectral energy distribution. Aims. We aim to better constrain the orbital parameters of the known giant planet. Methods. We monitored the system over three years from 2015 to 2018 with the VLT/SPHERE exoplanet imaging instrument. Results. We measure an orbital motion for the planet of ~130 mas with a slightly decreasing separation (~10 mas) and find a hint of curvature. This potential curvature is further supported at 3$\sigma$ significance when including literature GPI astrometry corrected for calibration systematics. Fits of the SPHERE and GPI data using three complementary approaches provide broadly similar results. The data suggest an orbital period of 32$^{+17}_{-9}$ yr (i.e. 12$^{+4}_{-2}$ au in semi-major axis), an inclination of 133$^{+14}_{-7}$ deg, an eccentricity of 0.45$^{+0.10}_{-0.15}$, and an argument of periastron passage of 87$^{+34}_{-30}$ deg [mod 180 deg]. The time at periastron passage and the longitude of node exhibit bimodal distributions because we do not detect yet if the planet is accelerating or decelerating along its orbit. Given the inclinations of the planet's orbit and of the stellar rotation axis (134-144 deg), we infer alignment or misalignment within 18 deg for the star-planet spin-orbit. Further astrometric monitoring in the next 3-4 years is required to confirm at a higher significance the curvature in the planet's motion, determine if the planet is accelerating or decelerating on its orbit, and further constrain its orbital parameters and the star-planet spin-orbit., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 15 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. We detect the accreting low-mass companion HD142527B at a separation of 73 mas (11.4 au) from the star. No other companions with mass greater than 10 MJ are visible in the field of view of IFS (\sim 100 au centered on the star) or in the IRDIS field of view (\sim 400 au centered on the star). Measurements from IFS, SAM IFS, and IRDIS suggest an M6 spectral type for HD142527B, with an uncertainty of one spectral subtype, compatible with an object of M=0.11 \pm 0.06 MSun and R=0.15 \pm 0.07 RSun. The determination of the mass remains a challenge using contemporary evolutionary models, as they do not account for the energy input due to accretion from infalling material. We consider that the spectral type of the secondary may also be earlier than the type we derived from IFS spectra. From dynamical considerations, we further constrain the mass to 0.26^{+0.16}_{-0.14} MSun , which is consistent with both our spectroscopic analysis and the values reported in the literature. Following previous methods, the lower and upper dynamical mass values correspond to a spectral type between M2.5 and M5.5 for the companion. By fitting the astrometric points, we find the following orbital parameters: a period of P=35-137 yr; an inclination of i=121-130 deg.; , a value of Omega=124-135 deg for the longitude of node, and an 68% confidence interval of \sim 18 - 57 au for the separation at periapsis. Eccentricity and time at periapsis passage exhibit two groups of values: \sim0.2-0.45 and \sim0.45-0.7 for e, and \sim 2015-2020 and \sim2020-2022 for T_0. While these orbital parameters might at first suggest that HD142527B is not the companion responsible for the outer disk truncation, a previous hydrodynamical analysis of this system showed that they are compatible with a companion that is able to produce the large cavity and other observed features., Comment: 15, pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

The broadening of atomic emission lines by high-velocity motion of gas near accreting supermassive black holes is an observational hallmark of quasars. Observations of broad emission lines could potentially constrain the mechanism for transporting gas inwards through accretion disks or outwards through winds. The size of this broad-line region has been estimated by measuring the light travel time delay between the variable nuclear continuum and the emission lines - a method known as reverberation mapping. In some models the emission lines arise from a continuous outflow, whereas in others they are produced by orbiting gas clouds. Directly imaging such regions has not hitherto been possible because of their small angular sizes (< 0.1 milli-arcseconds). Here we report a spatial offset (with a spatial resolution of ten micro-arcseconds or about 0.03 parsecs for a distance of 550 million parsecs) between the red and blue photo-centres of the broad Paschen-{\alpha} line of the quasar 3C 273 perpendicular to the direction of its radio jet. This spatial offset corresponds to a gradient in the velocity of the gas and thus implies that the gas is orbiting the central supermassive black hole. The data are well fitted by a broad-line-region model of a thick disk of gravitationally bound material orbiting a black hole of 300 million solar masses. We infer a disk radius of 150 light days; a radius of 100-400 light days was found previously using reverberation mapping. The rotation axis of the disk aligns in inclination and position angle with the radio jet. Our results support the methods that are often used to estimate the masses of accreting supermassive black holes and to study their evolution over cosmic time., Comment: 19 pages including methods, Nature, in press. With an orbital distance comparable to that of Saturn in the solar system, \bpic b is the closest (semi-major axis $\simeq$\,9\,au) exoplanet that has been imaged to orbit a star. Thus it offers unique opportunities for detailed studies of its orbital, physical, and atmospheric properties, and of disk-planet interactions. With the exception of the discovery observations in 2003 with NaCo at the Very Large Telescope (VLT), all following astrometric measurements relative to \bpic have been obtained in the southwestern part of the orbit, which severely limits the determination of the planet's orbital parameters. We aimed at further constraining \bpic b orbital properties using more data, and, in particular, data taken in the northeastern part of the orbit. We used SPHERE at the VLT to precisely monitor the orbital motion of beta \bpic b since first light of the instrument in 2014. We were able to monitor the planet until November 2016, when its angular separation became too small (125 mas, i.e., 1.6\,au) and prevented further detection. We redetected \bpic b on the northeast side of the disk at a separation of 139\,mas and a PA of 30$^{\circ}$ in September 2018. The planetary orbit is now well constrained. With a semi-major axis (sma) of $a = 9.0 \pm 0.5$ au (1 $\sigma $), it definitely excludes previously reported possible long orbital periods, and excludes \bpic b as the origin of photometric variations that took place in 1981. We also refine the eccentricity and inclination of the planet. From an instrumental point of view, these data demonstrate that it is possible to detect, if they exist, young massive Jupiters that orbit at less than 2 au from a star that is 20 pc away., Comment: accepted by A&A

The nearby Herbig Be star HD100546 is known to be a laboratory for the study of protoplanets and their relation with the circumstellar disk that is carved by at least 2 gaps. We observed the HD100546 environment with high contrast imaging exploiting several different observing modes of SPHERE, including datasets with/without coronagraphs, dual band imaging, integral field spectroscopy and polarimetry. The picture emerging from these different data sets is complex. Flux-conservative algorithms images clearly show the disk up to 200au. More aggressive algorithms reveal several rings and warped arms overlapping the main disk. The bright parts of this ring lie at considerable height over the disk mid-plane at about 30au. Our images demonstrate that the brightest wings close to the star in the near side of the disk are a unique structure, corresponding to the outer edge of the intermediate disk at ~40au. Modeling of the scattered light from the disk with a geometrical algorithm reveals that a moderately thin structure can well reproduce the light distribution in the flux-conservative images. We suggest that the gap between 44 and 113 au span between the 1:2 and 3:2 resonance orbits of a massive body located at ~70au that might coincide with the candidate planet HD100546b detected with previous thermal IR observations. In this picture, the two wings can be the near side of a ring formed by disk material brought out of the disk at the 1:2 resonance with the same massive object. While we find no clear evidence confirming detection of the planet candidate HD100546c in our data, we find a diffuse emission close to the expected position of HD100546b. This source can be described as an extremely reddened substellar object surrounded by a dust cloud or its circumplanetary disk. The G-type star GJ504A is known to host a 3 to 35 MJup companion whose temperature, mass, and projected separation all contribute to make it a test case for the planet formation theories and for atmospheric models of giant planets and light brown dwarfs. We collected data from the CHARA interferometer, SOPHIE spectrograph, and VLT/SPHERE high contrast imager to revisit the properties of the system. We measure a radius of 1.35+/- 0.04Rsun for GJ504A which yields isochronal ages of 21+/-2Myr or 4.0+/-1.8Gyr for the system and line-of-sight stellar rotation axis inclination of $162.4_{-4.3}^{+3.8}$ degrees or $18.6_{-3.8}^{+4.3}$ degrees. We re-detect the companion in the Y2, Y3, J3, H2, and K1 dual band SPHERE images. The complete 1-4 $\mu$m SED shape of GJ504b is best reproduced by T8-T9.5 objects with intermediate ages ($\leq1.5$Gyr), and/or unusual dusty atmospheres and/or super-solar metallicities. All six atmospheric models used yield $\mathrm{T_{eff}=550 \pm 50}$K for GJ504b and point toward a low surface gravity (3.5-4.0 dex). The accuracy on the metallicity value is limited by model-to-model systematics. It is not degenerate with the C/O ratio. We derive $\mathrm{log\:L/L_{\odot}=-6.15\pm0.15}$ dex for the companion compatible with masses of $\mathrm{M=1.3^{+0.6}_{-0.3}M_{Jup}}$ and $\mathrm{M=23^{+10}_{-9} M_{Jup}}$ for the young and old age ranges, respectively. The semi-major axis (sma) is above 27.8 au and the eccentricity lower than 0.55. The posterior on GJ~504b's orbital inclination suggests a misalignment with GJ~504A rotation axis. We combine the radial velocity and multi-epoch imaging data to exclude additional objects (90\% prob.) more massive than 2.5 and 30 $\mathrm{M_{Jup}}$ with sma in the range 0.01-80 au for the young and old system ages, respectively. Aims: We aim to characterize the orbital and atmospheric properties of PDS 70 b, which was first identified on May 2015 in the course of the SHINE survey with SPHERE, the extreme adaptive-optics instrument at the VLT. Methods: We obtained new deep SPHERE/IRDIS imaging and SPHERE/IFS spectroscopic observations of PDS 70 b. The astrometric baseline now covers 6 years which allows us to perform an orbital analysis. For the first time, we present spectrophotometry of the young planet which covers almost the entire near-infrared range (0.96 to 3.8 micrometer). We use different atmospheric models covering a large parameter space in temperature, log(g), chemical composition, and cloud properties to characterize the properties of the atmosphere of PDS 70 b. Results: PDS 70 b is most likely orbiting the star on a circular and disk coplanar orbit at ~22 au inside the gap of the disk. We find a range of models that can describe the spectrophotometric data reasonably well in the temperature range between 1000-1600 K and log(g) no larger than 3.5 dex. The planet radius covers a relatively large range between 1.4 and 3.7 R_jupiter with the larger radii being higher than expected from planet evolution models for the age of the planet of 5.4 Myr. Conclusions: This study provides a comprehensive dataset on the orbital motion of PDS 70 b, indicating a circular orbit and a motion coplanar with the disk. The first detailed spectral energy distribution of PDS 70 b indicates a temperature typical for young giant planets. We provide the catalogue of all transit-like features, including false alarms, detected by the CoRoT exoplanet teams in the 177 454 light curves of the mission. All these detections have been re-analysed with the same softwares so that to ensure their homogeneous analysis. Although the vetting process involves some human evaluation, it also involves a simple binary flag system over basic tests: detection significance, presence of a secondary, difference between odd and even depths, colour dependence, V-shape transit, and duration of the transit. We also gathered the information from the large accompanying ground-based programme carried out on the planet candidates and checked how useful the flag system could have been at the vetting stage of the candidates. In total, we identified and separated 824 false alarms of various kind, 2269 eclipsing binaries among which 616 are contact binaries and 1653 are detached ones, 37 planets and brown dwarfs, and 557 planet candidates. For the planet candidates, the catalogue gives not only their transit parameters but also the products of their light curve modelling, together with a summary of the outcome of follow-up observations when carried out and their current status. Among the planet candidates whose nature remains unresolved, we estimate that 8 +/- 3 planets are still to be identified. We derived planet and brown dwarf occurrences and confirm disagreements with Kepler estimates: small-size planets with orbital period less than ten days are underabundant by a factor of three in the CoRoT fields whereas giant planets are overabundant by a factor of two. These preliminary results would however deserve further investigations using the recently released CoRoT light curves that are corrected of the various instrumental effects and a homogeneous analysis of the stellar populations observed by the two missions., Comment: Full tables will be provided online at CDS

The study of high contrast imaged brown dwarfs and exoplanets depends strongly on evolutionary models. To estimate the mass of a directly imaged substellar object, its extracted photometry or spectrum is used and adjusted with model spectra together with the estimated age of the system. These models still need to be properly tested and constrained. HD 4747B is a brown dwarf close to the H burning mass limit, orbiting a nearby, solar-type star and has been observed with the radial velocity method over almost two decades now. Its companion was also recently detected by direct imaging, allowing a complete study of this particular object. We aim to fully characterize HD 4747B by combining a well constrained dynamical mass and a study of its observed spectral features in order to test evolutionary models for substellar objects and characterize its atmosphere. We combine the radial velocity measurements of HIRES and CORALIE taken over two decades and high contrast imaging of several epochs from NACO, NIRC2 and SPHERE to obtain a dynamical mass. From the SPHERE data we obtain a low resolution spectrum of the companion from Y to H band, as well as two narrow band-width photometric measurements in the K band. A study of the primary star allows in addition to constrain the age of the system as well as its distance. Thanks to the new SPHERE epoch and NACO archival data combined with previous imaging data and high precision radial velocity measurements, we have been able to derive a well constrained orbit. We derive a dynamical mass of mB=70.0$\pm$1.6 MJup which is higher than a previous study, but in better agreement with the models. By comparing the object with known brown dwarfs spectra, we derive a spectral type of L9 and an effective temperature of 1350$\pm$50 K. With a retrieval analysis we constrain the oxygen and carbon abundances and compare them with the ones from the HR 8799 planets.

Context. A low-mass brown dwarf has been recently imaged around HR 2562 (HD 50571), a star hosting a debris disk resolved in the far infrared. Interestingly, the companion location is compatible with an orbit coplanar with the disk and interior to the debris belt. This feature makes the system a valuable laboratory to analyze the formation of substellar companions in a circumstellar disk and potential disk-companion dynamical interactions. Aims. We aim to further characterize the orbital motion of HR 2562 B and its interactions with the host star debris disk. Methods. We performed a monitoring of the system over ~10 months in 2016 and 2017 with the VLT/SPHERE exoplanet imager. Results. We confirm that the companion is comoving with the star and detect for the first time an orbital motion at high significance, with a current orbital motion projected in the plane of the sky of 25 mas (~0.85 au) per year. No orbital curvature is seen in the measurements. An orbital fit of the SPHERE and literature astrometry of the companion without priors on the orbital plane clearly indicates that its orbit is (quasi-)coplanar with the disk. To further constrain the other orbital parameters, we used empirical laws for a companion chaotic zone validated by N-body simulations to test the orbital solutions that are compatible with the estimated disk cavity size. Non-zero eccentricities (>0.15) are allowed for orbital periods shorter than 100 yr, while only moderate eccentricities up to ~0.3 for orbital periods longer than 200 yr are compatible with the disk observations. We report the discovery of a bright, brown dwarf companion to the star HIP 64892, imaged with VLT/SPHERE during the SHINE exoplanet survey. The host is a B9.5V member of the Lower-Centaurus-Crux subgroup of the Scorpius Centaurus OB association. The measured angular separation of the companion ($1.2705\pm0.0023$") corresponds to a projected distance of $159\pm12$ AU. We observed the target with the dual-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopy modes of the IRDIS imager to obtain its SED and astrometry. In addition, we reprocessed archival NACO L-band data, from which we also recover the companion. Its SED is consistent with a young (<30 Myr), low surface gravity object with a spectral type of M9$_{\gamma}\pm1$. From comparison with the BT-Settl atmospheric models we estimate an effective temperature of $T_{\textrm{eff}}=2600 \pm 100$ K, and comparison of the companion photometry to the COND evolutionary models yields a mass of $\sim29-37$ M$_{\text{J}}$ at the estimated age of $16^{+15}_{-7}$ Myr for the system. HIP 64892 is a rare example of an extreme-mass ratio system ($q\sim0.01$) and will be useful for testing models relating to the formation and evolution of such low-mass objects., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

A large number of systems harboring a debris disk show evidence for a double belt architecture. One hypothesis for explaining the gap between the belts is the presence of one or more planets dynamically carving it. This work aims to investigate this scenario in systems harboring two components debris disks. All the targets in the sample were observed with the SPHERE instrument which performs high-contrast direct imaging. Positions of the inner and outer belts were estimated by SED fitting of the infrared excesses or, when available, from resolved images of the disk. Very few planets have been observed so far in debris disks gaps and we intended to test if such non-detections depend on the observational limits of the present instruments. This aim is achieved by deriving theoretical predictions of masses, eccentricities and semi-major axes of planets able to open the observed gaps and comparing such parameters with detection limits obtained with SPHERE. The relation between the gap and the planet is due to the chaotic zone around the orbit of the planet. The radial extent of this zone depends on the mass ratio between the planet and the star, on the semi-major axis and on the eccentricity of the planet and it can be estimated analytically. We apply the formalism to the case of one planet on a circular or eccentric orbit. We then consider multi-planetary systems: 2 and 3 equal-mass planets on circular orbits and 2 equal-mass planets on eccentric orbits in a packed configuration. We then compare each couple of values (M,a), derived from the dynamical analysis of single and multiple planetary models, with the detection limits obtained with SPHERE. Our results show that the apparent lack of planets in gaps between double belts could be explained by the presence of a system of two or more planets possibly of low mass and on an eccentric orbits whose sizes are below the present detection limits., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures

We present observations of the Herbig Ae star HD169142 with VLT/SPHERE instruments InfraRed Dual-band Imager and Spectrograph (IRDIS) ($K1K2$ and $H2H3$ bands) and the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) ($Y$, $J$ and $H$ bands). We detect several bright blobs at $\sim$180 mas separation from the star, and a faint arc-like structure in the IFS data. Our reference differential imaging (RDI) data analysis also finds a bright ring at the same separation. We show, using a simulation based on polarized light data, that these blobs are actually part of the ring at 180 mas. These results demonstrate that the earlier detections of blobs in the $H$ and $K_S$ bands at these separations in Biller et al. as potential planet/substellar companions are actually tracing a bright ring with a Keplerian motion. Moreover, we detect in the images an additional bright structure at $\sim$93 mas separation and position angle of 355$^{\circ}$, at a location very close to previous detections. It appears point-like in the $YJ$ and $K$ bands but is more extended in the $H$ band. We also marginally detect an inner ring in the RDI data at $\sim$100 mas. The substellar companion HD206893b has recently been discovered by direct imaging of its disc-bearing host star with the SPHERE instrument. We investigate the atypical properties of the companion, which has the reddest near-infrared colours among all known substellar objects, either orbiting a star or isolated, and we provide a comprehensive characterisation of the host star-disc-companion system. We conducted a follow-up of the companion with adaptive optics imaging and spectro-imaging with SPHERE, and a multiinstrument follow-up of its host star. We obtain a R=30 spectrum from 0.95 to 1.64 micron of the companion and additional photometry at 2.11 and 2.25 micron. We carried out extensive atmosphere model fitting for the companions and the host star in order to derive their age, mass, and metallicity. We found no additional companion in the system in spite of exquisite observing conditions resulting in sensitivity to 6MJup (2MJup) at 0.5" for an age of 300 Myr (50 Myr). We detect orbital motion over more than one year and characterise the possible Keplerian orbits. We constrain the age of the system to a minimum of 50 Myr and a maximum of 700 Myr, and determine that the host-star metallicity is nearly solar. The comparison of the companion spectrum and photometry to model atmospheres indicates that the companion is an extremely dusty late L dwarf, with an intermediate gravity (log g 4.5-5.0) which is compatible with the independent age estimate of the system. Though our best fit corresponds to a brown dwarf of 15-30 MJup aged 100-300 Myr, our analysis is also compatible with a range of masses and ages going from a 50 Myr 12MJup planetary-mass object to a 50 MJup Hyades-age brown dwarf..., Comment: Accepted to A&A

The SHINE program is a large high-contrast near-infrared survey of 600 young, nearby stars. It is aimed at searching for and characterizing new planetary systems using VLT/SPHERE's unprecedented high-contrast and high-angular resolution imaging capabilities. It also intends at placing statistical constraints on the occurrence and orbital properties of the giant planet population at large orbits as a function of the stellar host mass and age to test planet formation theories. We use the IRDIS dual-band imager and the IFS integral field spectrograph of SPHERE to acquire high-constrast coronagraphic differential near-infrared images and spectra of the young A2 star HIP65426. It is a member of the ~17 Myr old Lower Centaurus-Crux association. At a separation of 830 mas (92 au projected) from the star, we detect a faint red companion. Multi-epoch observations confirm that it shares common proper motion with HIP65426. Spectro-photometric measurements extracted with IFS and IRDIS between 0.95 and 2.2um indicate a warm, dusty atmosphere characteristic of young low surface-gravity L5-L7 dwarfs. Hot-start evolutionary models predict a luminosity consistent with a 6-12 MJup, Teff=1300-1600 K and R=1.5 RJup giant planet. Finally, the comparison with Exo-REM and PHOENIX BT-Settl synthetic atmosphere models gives consistent effective temperatures but with slightly higher surface gravity solutions of log(g)=4.0-5.0 with smaller radii (1.0-1.3 RJup). Given its physical and spectral properties, HIP65426b occupies a rather unique placement in terms of age, mass and spectral-type among the currently known imaged planets. CoRoT-9b is one of the rare long-period (P=95.3 days) transiting giant planets with a measured mass known to date. We present a new analysis of the CoRoT-9 system based on five years of radial-velocity (RV) monitoring with HARPS and three new space-based transits observed with CoRoT and Spitzer. Combining our new data with already published measurements we redetermine the CoRoT-9 system parameters and find good agreement with the published values. We uncover a higher significance for the small but non-zero eccentricity of CoRoT-9b ($e=0.133^{+0.042}_{-0.037}$) and find no evidence for additional planets in the system. We use simulations of planet-planet scattering to show that the eccentricity of CoRoT-9b may have been generated by an instability in which a $\sim 50~M_\oplus$ planet was ejected from the system. This scattering would not have produced a spin-orbit misalignment, so we predict that CoRoT-9b orbit should lie within a few degrees of the initial plane of the protoplanetary disk. In this second research note of a series of two, we present the first near-infrared results we obtained when modeling Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Our first proceedings showed the comparison between the MontAGN and STOKES Monte Carlo codes. Now we use our radiative transfer codes to simulate the polarization maps of a prototypical, NGC 1068-like, type-2 radio-quiet AGN. We produced high angular resolution infrared (1 micron) polarization images to be compared with recent observations in this wavelength range. Our preliminary results already show a good agreement between the models and observations but cannot account for the peculiar linear polarization angle of the torus such as observed. Gratadour et al. 2015 found a polarization position angle being perpendicular to the bipolar outflows axis. We studied the well known circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae/Be star HD 97048 with high angular resolution to reveal undetected structures in the disk, which may be indicative of disk evolutionary processes such as planet formation. We used the IRDIS near-IR subsystem of the extreme adaptive optics imager SPHERE at the ESO/VLT to study the scattered light from the circumstellar disk via high resolution polarimetry and angular differential imaging. We imaged the disk in unprecedented detail and revealed four ring-like brightness enhancements and corresponding gaps in the scattered light from the disk surface with radii between 39 au and 341 au. We derived the inclination and position angle as well as the height of the scattering surface of the disk from our observational data. We found that the surface height profile can be described by a single power law up to a separation ~270 au. Using the surface height profile we measured the scattering phase function of the disk and found that it is well consistent with theoretical models of compact dust aggregates.
