Spin- and charge-lattice interactions are potential key factors in the microscopic mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates. Although both interactions can dramatically shape the low-energy electronic structure, their phenomenological roles in superconductivity are usually investigated independently. Employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the spectroscopic fingerprint of short-range antiferromagnetic order in conjunction with enhanced electron-phonon interaction in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor $\mathrm{Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4}$. The observed mode coupling exhibits a strong momentum dependence that is in striking contrast to the node-antinode dichotomy previously observed in the hole-doped cuprates. Our results reveal an intimate relationship between electron-phonon coupling and antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which collectively sets the stage for unconventional superconductivity in the electron-doped cuprates.

Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has been the focus of intense interest over the past decade due to its topological properties. Bi surfaces are known to form on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ upon exposure to atmosphere, but their electronic structure has not been investigated. We report band structure measurements of such Bi surfaces using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Measured spectra can be well explained by the band structure of a single bilayer of Bi on Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and show that Bi surfaces consistently dominate the photoemission signal for air exposure times of at least 1 hour. These results demonstrate that atmospheric effects should be taken into consideration when identifying two-dimensional transport channels, and when designing surface-sensitive measurements of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, ideally limiting air exposure to no more than a few minutes.

In the underdoped n-type cuprate Nd2-xCexCuO4, long-ranged antiferromagnetic order reconstructs the Fermi surface, resulting in a putative antiferromagnetic metal with small pockets. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observe an anomalous energy gap, an order of magnitude smaller than the antiferromagnetic gap, in a wide range of the underdoped regime and smoothly connecting to the superconducting gap at optimal doping. After carefully considering all the known ordering tendencies in tandem with the phase diagram, we hypothesize that the normal state gap in the underdoped n-type cuprates originates from Cooper pairing. The high temperature scale of the normal state gap raises the prospect of engineering higher transition temperatures in the n-type cuprates comparable to that of the p-type cuprates.

In contrast to hole-doped cuprates, electron-doped cuprates consistently exhibit strong antiferromagnetic correlations with a commensurate ({\pi}, {\pi}) ordering wave vector, leading to the prevalent belief that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations mediate Cooper pairing in these unconventional superconductors. However, early investigations produced two paradoxical findings: while antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations create the largest pseudogap at "hot spots" in momentum space, Raman scattering and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements using the leading-edge method seem to suggest the superconducting gap is also maximized at these locations. This presented a dilemma for spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing: Cooper pairing is strongest at momenta where normal state low energy spectral weight is most suppressed. Here we investigate this dilemma in Nd2-xCexCuO4 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy under significantly improved experimental conditions. The unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio and resolution allow us to directly observe the Bogoliubov quasiparticles, demonstrating the existence and importance of two sectors of states: 1. The reconstructed main band and the states gapped by the antiferromagnetic pseudogap around the hot spots. 2. The gossamer Fermi surface states with distinct dispersion inside the pseudogap, from which Bogoliubov quasiparticle coherence peaks emerge below Tc. Supported by numerical results, we propose that the non-zero modulus of the antiferromagnetic order parameter causes the former, while fluctuations in the antiferromagnetic order parameter orientation are responsible for the latter. Our revelations of the gossamer Fermi surface reconcile the paradoxical observations, deepening our understanding of superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates in particular, and unconventional superconductivity in general., Comment: Submitted version 30 pages, 4 main figures, 8 extended data figures. Quantifying electron-phonon interactions for the surface states of topological materials can provide key insights into surface-state transport, topological superconductivity, and potentially how to manipulate the surface state using a structural degree of freedom. We perform time-resolved x-ray diffraction (XRD) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements on Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$, following the excitation of coherent A$_{1g}$ optical phonons. We extract and compare the deformation potentials coupling the surface electronic states to local A$_{1g}$-like displacements in these two materials using the experimentally determined atomic displacements from XRD and electron band shifts from ARPES.We find the coupling in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ to be similar and in general in agreement with expectations from density functional theory. We establish a methodology that quantifies the mode-specific electron-phonon coupling experimentally, allowing detailed comparison to theory. Our results shed light on fundamental processes in topological insulators involving electron-phonon coupling.

We investigate coupled electron-lattice dynamics in the topological insulator Bi2Te3 with time-resolved photoemission and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. It is well established that coherent phonons can be launched by optical excitation, but selection rules generally restrict these modes to zone-center wavevectors and Raman-active branches. We find that the topological surface state couples to additional modes, including a continuum of surface-projected bulk modes from both Raman- and infrared-branches, with possible contributions from surface-localized modes when they exist. Our calculations show that this surface vibrational spectrum occurs naturally as a consequence of the translational and inversion symmetries broken at the surface, without requiring the splitting-off of surface-localized phonon modes. The generality of this result suggests that coherent phonon spectra are useful by providing unique fingerprints for identifying surface states in more controversial materials. These effects may also expand the phase space for tailoring surface state wavefunctions via ultrafast optical excitation.

We report the observation of a novel nonlinear optical response from the prototypical three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ through the process of high-order harmonic generation. We find that the generation efficiency increases as the laser polarization is changed from linear to elliptical, and it becomes maximum for circular polarization. With the aid of a microscopic theory and a detailed analysis of the measured spectra, we reveal that such anomalous enhancement encodes the characteristic topology of the band structure that originates from the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry protection. Our study reveals a new platform for chiral strong-field physics and presents a novel, contact-free, all-optical approach for the spectroscopy of topological insulators. The implications are in ultrafast probing of topological phase transitions, light-field driven dissipationless electronics, and quantum computation., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

We study the microscopic origins of photocurrent generation in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ via time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We image the unoccupied band structure as it evolves following a circularly polarized optical excitation and observe an asymmetric electron population in momentum space, which is the spectroscopic signature of a photocurrent. By analyzing the rise times of the population we identify which occupied and unoccupied electronic states are coupled by the optical excitation. We conclude that photocurrents can only be excited via resonant optical transitions coupling to spin-orbital textured states. Our work provides a microscopic understanding of how to control photocurrents in systems with spin-orbit coupling and broken inversion symmetry.

The application of pressure can induce transitions between unconventional quantum phases in correlated materials. The inorganic compound TiOCl, composed of chains of S=1/2 Ti ions, is an ideal realization of a spin-Peierls system with a relatively simple unit cell. At ambient pressure, it is an insulator due to strong electronic interactions (a Mott insulator). Its resistivity shows a sudden decrease with increasing pressure, indicating a transition to a more metallic state which may coincide with the emergence of charge density wave order. Therefore, high pressure studies of the structure with x-rays are crucial in determining the ground-state physics in this quantum magnet. In ambient pressure, TiOCl exhibits a transition to an incommensurate nearly dimerized state at $T_{c2}=92$ K and to a commensurate dimerized state at $T_{c1}=66$ K. Here, we discover a rich phase diagram as a function of temperature and pressure using x-ray diffraction on a single crystal in a diamond anvil cell down to $T=4$ K and pressures up to 14.5 GPa. Remarkably, the magnetic interaction scale increases dramatically with increasing pressure, as indicated by the high onset temperature of the spin-Peierls phase. At $\sim$7 GPa, the extrapolated onset of the spin-Peierls phase occurs above $T=300$ K, indicating a quantum singlet state exists at room temperature. Topological insulators host spin-polarized surface states born out of the energetic inversion of bulk bands driven by the spin-orbit interaction. Here we discover previously unidentified consequences of band-inversion on the surface electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$. By performing simultaneous spin, time, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we map the spin-polarized unoccupied electronic structure and identify a surface resonance which is distinct from the topological surface state, yet shares a similar spin- orbital texture with opposite orientation. Its momentum- dependence and spin texture imply an intimate connection with the topological surface state. Calculations show these two distinct states can emerge from trivial Rashba-like states that change topology through the spin-orbit-induced band inversion. This work thus provides a compelling view of the coevolution of surface states through a topological phase transition, enabled by the unique capability of directly measuring the spin-polarized unoccupied band structure.

Recently discovered materials called three-dimensional topological insulators constitute examples of symmetry protected topological states in the absence of applied magnetic fields and cryogenic temperatures. A hallmark characteristic of these non-magnetic bulk insulators is the protected metallic electronic states confined to the material's surfaces. Electrons in these surface states are spin polarized with their spins governed by their direction of travel (linear momentum), resulting in a helical spin texture in momentum space. Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) has been the only tool capable of directly observing this central feature with simultaneous energy, momentum, and spin sensitivity. By using an innovative photoelectron spectrometer with a high-flux laser-based light source, we discovered another surprising property of these surface electrons which behave like Dirac fermions. We found that the spin polarization of the resulting photoelectrons can be fully manipulated in all three dimensions through selection of the light polarization. These surprising effects are due to the spin-dependent interaction of the helical Dirac fermions with light, which originates from the strong spin-orbit coupling in the material. Our results illustrate unusual scenarios in which the spin polarization of photoelectrons is completely different from the spin state of electrons in the originating initial states. High resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) was performed on the three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ using a recently developed high-efficiency spectrometer. The topological surface state's helical spin structure is observed, in agreement with theoretical prediction. Spin textures of both chiralities, at energies above and below the Dirac point, are observed, and the spin structure is found to persist at room temperature. The measurements reveal additional unexpected spin polarization effects, which also originate from the spin-orbit interaction, but are well differentiated from topological physics by contrasting momentum and photon energy and polarization dependencies. These observations demonstrate significant deviations of photoelectron and quasiparticle spin polarizations.
