Computer Science - Computers and Society - Abstract
It is a considerable task to collect digital trace data at a large scale and at the same time adhere to established academic standards. In the context of political communication, important challenges are (1) defining the social media accounts and posts relevant to the campaign (content validity), (2) operationalizing the venues where relevant social media activity takes place (construct validity), (3) capturing all of the relevant social media activity (reliability), and (4) sharing as much data as possible for reuse and replication (objectivity). This project by GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences and the E-Democracy Program of the University of Koblenz-Landau conducted such an effort. We concentrated on the two social media networks of most political relevance, Facebook and Twitter., Comment: PID: http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0168-ssoar-56149-4, GESIS Papers 2018|4

13. Aircraft Noise Distribution as a Fairness Dilemma — A Review of Aircraft Noise through the Lens of Social Justice Research

- Abstract
Aircraft noise exposure is a health risk and there is evidence that noise annoyance partly mediates the association between noise exposure and stress-related health risks. Thus, approaches to reduce annoyance may be beneficial for health. Annoyance is influenced by manifold non-acoustic factors and perceiving a fair and trustful relationship between the airport and its residents may be one of them. The distribution of aircraft noise exposure can be regarded as a fairness dilemma: while residents living near an airport may seem to have some advantages, the majority of residents living under certain flight routes or in their immediate proximity suffer from the disadvantages of the airport, especially the noise. Moreover, a dilemma exists between the airport’s beneficial economic impact for a region and the physical and psychological integrity of residents. Aircraft noise exposure through the lens of social justice research can help to improve our understanding of noise annoyance. Research indicates that the fairness perceptions of the parties involved can be enhanced by (a) improving individual cost–benefit ratios, (b) providing a fair procedure for deciding upon the noise distribution, and (c) implementing fair social interaction with residents. Based on the review of evidence from social justice research, we derive recommendations on how fairness aspects can be integrated into aircraft noise management with the purpose of improving the relationship between the airport and its residents, to reduce annoyance, and to enhance the acceptance of local aviation and the airport as a neighbor.

- Abstract
This article reviews current research on informal science learning through news media. Based on a descriptive model of media-based science communication we distinguish between (a) the professional routines by which journalists select and depict scientific information in traditional media and (b) the psychological processes that account for how media recipients select, process and integrate such information. We argue that science literacy and media literacy in laypersons can be promoted by combining insights from the research on mass media production, laypersons' reception processes and the interplay of both. Moreover, we point out potential obstacles and biases in the process of science communication and suggest strategies to prevent such problems using media-based elements of science communication. Focusing on "traditional" news media in the main parts of the article, we conclude with reflections on how online sources might change the interplay between information demand and supply.

There has been substantial scholarly effort to (a) investigate the psychological underpinnings of why individuals believe in disinformation, and (b) develop interventions that hamper their acceptance and spread. However, there is a lack of systematic integration of these two research lines. We conducted a systematic scoping review of empirically tested psychological interventions (N = 176) to counteract disinformation. We developed an intervention map and analyzed boosting, inoculation, identity management, nudging, and fact-checking interventions as well as various subdimensions. We further examined how these interventions are theoretically derived from the two most prominent psychological accounts for disinformation susceptibility: classical and motivated reasoning. We find that the majority of disinformation studies examined fact-checking interventions, is poorly linked to basic psychological theory and not geared towards reducing motivated reasoning. Based on this, we outline future research avenues for effective psychological countermeasures against disinformation.

- Abstract
At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Overall, the results underscore the importance of morality-related and contextual factors in understanding adherence to public health recommendations during the pandemic

- Abstract
Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic.Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics., John Templeton Foundation (JTF); Narodowe Centrum Nauki (National Science Centre); UK Research & Innovation (UKRI); Medical Research Council UK (MRC); Economic Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award; Economic Social Research Council Impact Acceleration Award; University of Oxford; Gouvernement du Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada); Agentura na Podporu Vyskumu a Vyvoja (Slovak Research and Development Agency); Austrian Science Fund (FWF); Universitat Wien (University of Vienna); Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan (Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan); Aarhus Universitets Forskningsfond (Aarhus University Research Foundation); Swedish Research Council; Carlsberg Foundation; Ministarstvo Prosvete, Nauke i Tehnolokog Razvoja (Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia); NOMIS Stiftung (NOMIS Foundation); National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC); UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); French National Research Agency (ANR); German Research Foundation (DFG); Gouvernement du Canada | Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (Conseil de Recherches en Sciences Naturelles et en Genie du Canada); HKUST IEMS research grant project, funded by EY; Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education); Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation | Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development); Research Council of Norway through its Centres of Excellence Scheme; Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar; J. 48. 'The airport does what it wants to do anyways' – qualitative revisiting of the 4-factor model of fairness in the context of aviation research – first results of a focus group study

noise ,focus groups ,fairness ,aircraft ,justice - Abstract
Annoyance due to aircraft noise is known to be highly impacted by non-acoustical factors such as attitudes , expectations and (mis-)trust towards the airport management. As exposure to noise is generally distributed unevenly, perceived fairness in the relationship between the airport and its residents is assumed to contribute to annoyance judgments. Perceived fairness has even been shown to alleviate the distress of the affected individual in other fields of research (e.g. organizational and justice psychology). However, research on fairness aspects in the context of aircraft noise exposure is scarce. In the framework of the EU-project ANIMA, focus groups with noise-affected residents were conducted around Cologne-Bonn Airport in order to identify relevant aspects of fairness evaluations. Transcripts of the discussions were produced and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The four-factor structure of fairness (i.e. distributive, procedural, informational, and interpersonal fairness) was brought to life with statements from residents. The relevance of specific factors, such as informational aspects like truthfulness and justification was analyzed based on residents` statements. Recommendations are made to focus on fairness, both for future studies investigating fairness in the context of noise research and airport management measures aimed at establishing a constructive relationship to aircraft noise affected residents.
