Abstract

Melt growth techniques have been successfully used to grow extremely high quality Tl0.5Pb0.5Sr1.6Ba0.4Ca2Cu3Ox epitaxial films as large as 15 micrometers thick on single crystal LaAlO3 substrates. Such films, however, were found to be incompatible with the textured buffer layer yttria-stabilized zirconia. Studies reveal that buffer layer properties required for the epitaxial growth of such films involve texture, chemical stability and lattice matching.

Abstract

The impact of processing parameters on the microstructural and superconducting properties silver-sheathed Tl0.78Pb0.5Ba0.4Sr1.6Ca2Cu3Oy tapes was investigated. Specifically, uniaxially pressed tapes fabricated via the powder-in-tube method were subjected to different intermediate pressing stresses in between thermal treatment. This, together with changes in oxygen partial pressure and anneal periods, were found to have significant effects on the tapes' ampacity.

Abstract

The thermal stability of Li-ion cells with intercalating carbon anodes and metal oxide cathodes was measured as a function of state of charge and temperature for two advanced cell chemistries. Cells of the 18650 design with LixCoO2 cathodes (commercial SONY cells) and LixNi0.85Co0.15O2 cathodes were measured for thermal reactivity in the open circuit cell condition. Calorimetric techniques of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) were used to characterize these cells in both full cell configuration and as individual electrode components.
