- Abstract
Introduction: Studies regarding the use of support services for persons with a dual diagnosis of intellectual disability and psychopathology are scarce; even fewer have focused on children and young adults. The aim of the present study, conducted in Israel, was to compare the use of support services and their perceived effectiveness by families of children and young adults with intellectual disability (ID) and with dual diagnosis. Methods: Data were collected from 195 family (parental) caregivers of individuals with ID or dual diagnosis, aged 10-30. Using a structured questionnaire, family caregivers reported on the use of support services and on their perceived effectiveness. Results: Findings showed that in addition to the obvious mental health services, caregivers of individuals with ID and dual diagnosis report using a range of services and resources. Caregivers of persons diagnosed only with ID perceived some of the mental health services as being more effective than did caregivers of individuals with dual diagnosis. Conclusion: We advocate for enhanced training for professionals working with individuals with dual diagnosis within all services. Furthermore, parents need to be supported in their search for services for their child and in dealing with complex situations. In addition, more research is needed to identify why individuals with dual diagnosis may not benefit from current mental health services and, in line with this, develop more effective services. Finally, we advocate for the establishment of a one-stop shop that can provide for the comprehensive needs of these individuals within one center.

Article 11 of the United Nations' Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and various relevant humanitarian actors recognize the obligation to ensure the protection and safety of persons with disabilities in various situations of risk, including armed and political conflict. Nonetheless, protracted crises exacerbate the existing inequalities and vulnerabilities of individuals with disabilities. This article suggests that, in addition to recognized subcultural issues, the political context should be considered in the policies and practices concerning those with disabilities. To assist individuals with disabilities and their families who are living in situations of protracted political conflict and the professionals who serve them, research should further explore these issues and their effects in terms of quality‐of‐life measures. A better understanding of the individual, organizational, and social contextual factors of political conflict in the conceptualization and measurement of the quality of life of individuals with disabilities and their families will promote improved and more sensitive services, support, and interventions. 10. Perceptions of Middle-Class Mothers of Their Children with Special Needs Participating in Motor and Sport Programs
- Author

- Abstract
This exploratory research studied middle-class mother's primary reason for registering their young children, mean age 6.9 years, in adapted motor and sports programs and their perceptions of their children upon entering the program and upon completion. Analyses also examined the possible relationship between mothers' age, education or children's age with their perceived favorable changes in the children's development. Fifty-one mothers participated in the study. The mothers completed a survey examining their perceptions of their children's developmental function along seven domains: understanding direction, communication, general physical functioning, fine motor skills, activities of daily living, vigilance and attention, and social behavior. The children were categorized by primary reason of referral to three categories: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, motor difficulties, and social/behavioral difficulties. Findings suggest that middle-class mothers showed awareness and understanding of their children's needs by identifying the general physical function as the desirable domain to be addressed by the motor group, vigilance and attention as associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and understanding directions and communication as the desirable domain by the social/behavioral group. The findings are discussed in terms of the complexity of mother's perception of their children participating in sports and motor programs as relating to the different domains as well as to their perceived needs of their children.

- Abstract
This study explains the characteristics and treatment of individuals with Rett Syndrome and presents two case studies that investigated the use of interventions in reducing stereotypical hand movements (SHM). The case studies involve two girls (ages 5 and 7) with Rett Syndrome who were enrolled in a special education school. Information was gathered on using different types of intervention to reduce SHM, including elastic bands and vibrators. The study found an inconsistency of effect of elastic bands and vibrators on the girls. Other findings include: (1) swinging in the swing had a positive effect on reducing SHM; (2) one of the girls preferred a tactile message to the hand, and rejected deep pressure through the joints; (3) the availability of objects and their distance from the girls (especially to the less ambulatory girl) had a great effect on the level of engagement with objects and response to external stimuli; and (4) the most effective position was found to be prone with objects 50 cm diagonally from the girls. Information sheets that could be used as overheads or handouts are attached. (CR)

- Abstract
This study examines the role of gender and birth status in the teaching styles of 19 mothers. The infants studied included 3 female and 4 male full-terms and 4 female and 8 male preterms. Each mother-infant dyad was videotaped during three teaching situations: book reading, an unstructured task, and a structured task. Behavior was coded according to a revised version of the Farran Parent-Caregiver Involvement Scale. In addition, psychosocial and cognitive development and mother-child synchrony measures were taken at 5, 13, and 20 months. Analysis of misclassification findings suggests that misclassified preterm males tend to be more similar to full-term males and females than to other preterms. This situation indicates that mothers may organize their teaching styles with their premature male toddlers, mostly by gender. Mothers of full-term males were more directive than mothers of any other group. On every interactive dimension, males received more and better involvement than females. Quality of interaction seemed to be less influenced by developmental level than by gender. (RJC)

The purpose was to measure the outcome effects of a hydrotherapy program lasting 12 sessions on the rehabilitation of participants after joint replacement because of arthritis-related conditions. Sixteen volunteers at a postrehabilitation stage (15 women and 1 man, mean age 56.7 ± 6.5 y) participated in a quasi-experimental design with simple interrupted time series aimed at improving range of motion around the hip joints, mobility (Berg Balance Scale; BBS), walking velocity in the timed up-and-go test (TUG), and scores on a quality-of-life scale (SF-36). One-way ANOVA statistics showed a significant effect between the pre- and posttest outcomes without differences between baseline and pretest for the extension and abduction of the operated hip, the BBS, the TUG, and the summary measures of the SF-36 (general, physical, and mental health). Findings suggest significant effects of the proposed treatment across the variables measured in participants with joint transplantations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A select committee of faculty, staff, administrators and students collaborated to create and implement the Disability Awareness, Training, and Empowerment (DATE) program on the campus of a midsize public state institution in the Northeastern United States. Based on studies of existing literature in the field, as well as campus climate information, the committee created a unique training program that has, to date, seen the training of over 350 faculty members, staff and administrators. This article will explore the literature that was surveyed to form the philosophical underpinnings of the program. The starting place for the training was No Pity: People with Disabilities Forging a New Civil Rights Movement (Shapiro, 1993), as well as the research of Cole and Cawthon (2015), Hehir and Schifter (2015), and Oliver (1990). After surveying this supporting literature, the article will then explore the evolution and facilitation of the training program, including the various iterations of the training as it took its final form. The article will conclude with an exploration of possible new directions for disability awareness training programs on university campuses. The discussion also includes an expansion to the student body and a corresponding fulfillment of the university’s civic engagement course requirements.

Successful research efforts, in either academe or industry, require an awareness of the state of the art. This is necessary in order to identify previous research, to develop an understanding of the research problem, and to avoid unnecessary duplication of work. In addition, maintaining an on-going awareness of current literature in your area of chemistry, is crucial to career advancement. This is true for graduate students, whose theses must be based on unique research results, as well as for senior researchers who are able to secure grant funding and pursue exclusive technology rights only for original work.

- Abstract
The importance of being able to obtain chemicals commercially, being aware of necessary laboratory precautions, and having access to hazardous-property information is essential for students and researchers. This chapter provides commercial availability links to individual chemical company catalogs and to websites that are linked to multiple commercial sources. It describes laboratory-safety information resources and provides hazardous-property information, for both individual and classes of chemicals, and includes appropriate search techniques. Information on commercial availability, safety, and hazards is interrelated in the sense that commercial chemical companies are responsible for providing Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for their products. The MSDS for a substance provides basic physical-property information, possible hazardous properties, and instructions for safe use.

- Abstract
The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

50. On the fly collection development to support emergent energy research initiatives
- Author

- Abstract
Within the last few years, two major energy research initiatives have been undertaken on the Caltech campus: the Resnick Sustainability Institute (RSI) and the Joint Center for Artifical Photosynthesis (JCAP). RSI's research includes the production of electricity and fuels from renewable sources, the distribution and storage of energy, and other sustainability projects. JCAP's area of research is focused on achieving a system of artificial photosynthesis for utilizing solar energy. Both of these projects require resources from a broad range of fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, environmental &systems engineering, and more. This talk will give a brief description of some of the research being done in these projects, along with an overview of where energy research has traditionally been categorized in terms of collection development. A publication analysis will be presented to elucidate where information is being referenced from and where affiliated researchers are publishing, and how this correlates with the current collection holdings. Other considerations, such as identifying resources, outreach to groups about availability, and re-use of the collections, will also be discussed.
