Search

We examine the cosmological consequences of the heavy quarks in KSVZ-type axion models. We find that their presence often causes an early matter domination phase, altering the evolution of the Universe. This extends the axion mass into the region where standard cosmology leads to overproduction, and allows for a greater number of axion models with non-renormalizable terms to be viable. Quantitatively, we find that decays proceeding through effective terms of up to dimension 9 ($d=9$) remain consistent with cosmological constraints, in contrast with the result $d\leq5$ previously found in the literature. As a consequence, the heavy quarks can be much heavier and the axion mass window with the correct relic density for dark matter is extended by orders of magnitude, down to $m_a\approx 6\times 10^{-9} \,{\rm eV}$. This is achieved without resorting to fine-tuning of the initial misalignment angle, bolstering the motivation for many future axion haloscope experiments. We revisit the formation of a thermal population of hadronic axions in nonstandard cosmologies, in light of the recent developments in obtaining continuous and smooth interaction rates for both the gluon and photon couplings. For certain cosmological histories, such as low-temperature reheating (LTR) and kination-like scenarios, the thermalization of the axion can be severely delayed to higher masses. In the case that thermal equilibrium is achieved, we improve the constraints on LTR for axion masses around the eV scale with respect to previous works and we constrain for the first time early matter-dominated (EMD) cosmologies. The Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism provides an attractive way of generating the determined fermion mass hierarchy and quark mixing matrix elements in the Standard Model (SM). Here we extend it by coupling the FN field, the flavon, to a dark sector containing one or more dark matter particles which are produced non-thermally sequentially through flavon production. Non-thermal flavon production occurs efficiently via freeze-in and through field oscillations. We explore this in the regime of high-scale breaking $\Lambda$ of the global $U(1)_{\textrm{FN}}$ group and at the reheating temperature $T_R\ll \Lambda$ where the flavon remains out of equilibrium at all times. We identify phenomenologically acceptable regions of $T_R$ and the flavon mass where the relic abundance of dark matter and other cosmological constraints are satisfied. In the case of one-component dark matter we find an effective upper limit on the FN charges at high $\Lambda$, i.e. $Q_{\rm FN}^{\rm DM}\leq13$. In the multi-component dark sector scenario the dark matter can be the heaviest dark particle that can be effectively stable at cosmological timescales, alternatively it can be produced sequentially by decays of the heavier ones. For scenarios where dark decays occur at intermediate timescales, i.e. $t\sim 0.1- 10^{28}\,{\rm s}$, we find that existing searches can effectively probe interesting regions of parameter space. These searches include indirect probes on decays such as $\gamma$-ray and neutrino telescopes as well as analyses of the Cosmic Microwave Background, as well as constraints on small scale structure formation from the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We consider the production of axion dark matter through the misalignment mechanism in the context of a nonstandard cosmological history involving early matter domination by a scalar field with a time-dependent decay rate. In cases where the temperature of the Universe experiences a temporary period of increase, Hubble friction can be restored in the evolution of the axion field, resulting in the possibility of up to three "crossings" of the axion mass and the Hubble expansion rate. This has the effect of dynamically resetting the misalignment mechanism to a new initial state for a second distinct phase of oscillation. The resultant axion mass required for the present dark matter relic density is never bigger than the standard-history window and can be smaller by more than three orders of magnitude, which can be probed by upcoming experiments such as ABRACADABRA, KLASH, ADMX, MADMAX, and ORGAN, targeting the axion-photon coupling. High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Simplified models of light new physics provide a convenient benchmark for experimental searches for new physics signatures, including dark matter (DM). However, additional detection modes can arise in less simplified and more realistic scenarios where new degrees of freedom are invoked. In this study, we introduce a non-minimal model based on a popular dark photon portal to DM where the mediator mass is obtained by interactions with the dark Higgs boson which acts as a long-lived particle. We further add to this scenario a new heavy DM species secluded from the Standard Model. In this model, which involves light and heavy particles in the dark sector, we find some new interesting phenomenological features that lead to complementary probes in intensity frontier searches for light long-lived particles, indirect detection searches for dark matter, and cosmic microwave background surveys. We study axion dark matter production from a misalignment mechanism in scenarios featuring a general nonstandard cosmology. Before the onset of Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the energy density of the universe is dominated by a particle field $\phi$ described by a general equation of state $\omega$. The ensuing enhancement of the Hubble expansion rate decreases the temperature at which axions start to oscillate, opening this way the possibility for axions heavier than in the standard window. This is the case for kination, or in general for scenarios with $\omega > 1/3$. However, if $\omega < 1/3$, as in the case of an early matter domination, the decay of $\phi$ injects additional entropy relative to the case of the standard model, diluting this way the preexisting axion abundance, and rendering lighter axions viable. For a misalignment angle $0.5 < \theta_i < \pi/\sqrt{3}$, the usual axion window becomes expanded to $4 \times 10^{-9}$ eV $\lesssim m_a \lesssim 2 \times 10^{-5}$ eV for the case of an early matter domination, or to $2 \times 10^{-6}$ eV $\lesssim m_a \lesssim 10^{-2}$ eV for the case of kination. Interestingly, the coupling axion-photon in such a wider range can be probed with next generation experiments such as ABRACADABRA, KLASH, ADMX, MADMAX, and ORGAN. Axion dark matter searches may therefore provide a unique tool to probe the history of the universe before Big Bang nucleosynthesis.

This Report provides an extensive review of the experimental programme of direct detection searches of particle dark matter. It focuses mostly on European efforts, both current and planned, but does it within a broader context of a worldwide activity in the field. It aims at identifying the virtues, opportunities and challenges associated with the different experimental approaches and search techniques. It presents scientific and technological synergies, both existing and emerging, with some other areas of particle physics, notably collider and neutrino programmes, and beyond. It addresses the issue of infrastructure in light of the growing needs and challenges of the different experimental searches. Finally, the Report makes a number of recommendations from the perspective of a long-term future of the field. They are introduced, along with some justification, in the opening Overview and Recommendations section and are next summarised at the end of the Report. Overall, we recommend that the direct search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector target should be given top priority in astroparticle physics, and in all particle physics, and beyond, as a positive measurement will provide the most unambiguous confirmation of the particle nature of dark matter in the Universe., Comment: 106 pages

The recent confirmation by the Fermilab-based Muon g-2 experiment of the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly has important implications for allowed particle spectra in softly broken supersymmetry (SUSY) models with neutralino dark matter (DM). Generally, the DM has to be quite light, with the mass up to a few hundred GeV, and bino-dominated if it is to provide most of DM in the Universe. Otherwise, a higgsino or wino dominated DM is also allowed but only as a strongly subdominant component of at most a few percent of the total density. These general patterns can easily be found in the phenomenological models of SUSY but in GUT-constrained scenarios this proves much more challenging. In this paper we revisit the issue in the framework of some unified SUSY models with different GUT boundary conditions on the soft masses. We study the so-called non-universal gaugino model (NUGM) in which the mass of the gluino is disunified from those of the bino and the wino and an SO(10) and an SU(5) GUT-inspired models as examples. We find that in these unified frameworks the above two general patterns of DM can also be found, and thus the muon anomaly can also be accommodated, unlike in the simplest frameworks of the CMSSM or the NUHM. We show the resulting values of direct detection cross-section for points that do and do not satisfy the muon anomaly. Physical theories that depend on many parameters or are tested against data from many different experiments pose unique challenges to statistical inference. Many models in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology fall into one or both of these categories. These issues are often sidestepped with statistically unsound ad hoc methods, involving intersection of parameter intervals estimated by multiple experiments, and random or grid sampling of model parameters. Whilst these methods are easy to apply, they exhibit pathologies even in low-dimensional parameter spaces, and quickly become problematic to use and interpret in higher dimensions. In this article we give clear guidance for going beyond these procedures, suggesting where possible simple methods for performing statistically sound inference, and recommendations of readily-available software tools and standards that can assist in doing so. Our aim is to provide any physicists lacking comprehensive statistical training with recommendations for reaching correct scientific conclusions, with only a modest increase in analysis burden. We perform a detailed study of dark matter production via freeze-in under the assumption that some fluid dominates the early Universe before depositing its energy to the plasma causing entropy injection. As a dark matter candidate we consider a fermionic singlet that is produced through its interactions with a scalar particle in the thermal plasma. The fluid alters the expansion rate of the Universe, as well as the scaling of the temperature, which significantly affects the evolution of both the number density and the mean momentum of the dark matter particle. We identify and discuss in detail the effects of the evolution of these quantities by considering several examples representing dark matter production at different stages of expansion and entropy injection. We find that, since the dark matter density is reduced when the entropy injection to the plasma continues after freeze-in, in order to reproduce its observational value an enhanced rate of dark matter production is required relative to standard cosmology. We study the importance of a frozen-in dark matter production regime, where the dark matter particle is produced via kinematically forbidden decays that arise from significant thermal correction to the mass a mediator particle in the plasma., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We use the state-of-the-art high-resolution cosmological simulations by IllustrisTNG to derive the velocity distribution and local density of dark matter in galaxies like our Milky Way and find a substantial spread in both quantities. Next we use our findings to examine the sensitivity to the dark matter velocity profile of underground searches using electron scattering in germanium and silicon targets. We find that sub-GeV dark matter search is strongly affected by these uncertainties, unlike nuclear recoil searches for heavier dark matter, especially in multiple electron-hole modes, for which the sensitivity to the scattering cross-section is also weaker. Therefore, by improving the sensitivity to lower ionization thresholds not only projected sensitivities will be boosted but also the dependence on the astrophysical uncertainties will become significantly reduced., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Many existing or proposed intensity-frontier search experiments look for decay signatures of light long-lived particles (LLPs), highly displaced from the interaction point, in a distant detector that is well-shielded from SM background. This approach is, however, limited to new particles with decay lengths similar to or larger than the baseline of those experiments. In this study, we discuss how this basic constraint can be overcome in BSM models that go beyond the simplest scenarios. If more than one light new particle is present in the model, an additional secondary production of LLPs may take place right in front of the detector, opening this way a new lifetime regime to be probed. We illustrate the prospects of such searches in the future experiments FASER, MATHUSLA and SHiP, for representative models, emphasizing possible connections to dark matter or an anomalous magnetic moment of muon. We examine and point out the importance of a regime of dark matter production through the freeze-in mechanism that results from a large thermal correction to a decaying mediator particle mass from hot plasma in the early Universe. We show that mediator decays to dark matter that are kinematically forbidden at the usually considered ranges of low temperatures can be generically present at higher temperatures and actually dominate the overall dark matter production, thus leading to very distinct solutions from the standard case. We illustrate these features by considering a dark Higgs portal model where dark matter is produced via decays of a scalar field with a large thermal mass. We provide an updated and improved study of the prospects of the H.E.S.S. and Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) experiments in testing neutralino dark matter in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with nine free parameters (p9MSSM). We include all relevant experimental constraints and theoretical developments, in particular the calculation of the Sommerfeld enhancement for both present-day annihilation and the relic abundance. We perform a state-of-the-art analysis of the CTA sensitivity with a log-likelihood test ratio statistics and apply it to a numerical scan of the p9MSSM parameter space focusing on a TeV scale dark matter. We find that, assuming Einasto profile of dark matter halo in the Milky Way, H.E.S.S. has already been able to nearly reach the so-called thermal WIMP value, while CTA will go below it by providing a further improvement of at least an order of magnitude. Both H.E.S.S. and CTA are sensitive to several cases for which direct detection cross section will be below the so-called neutrino floor, with H.E.S.S. being sensitive to most of the wino region, while CTA also covering a large fraction of the ~1 TeV higgsino region. Thermal dark matter scenarios based on light (sub-GeV) fermions typically require the presence of an extra dark sector containing both a massive dark photon along with a dark Higgs boson. The latter generates both the dark photon mass and an additional mass term for the dark sector fermions. This simple setup has both rich phenomenology and bright detection prospects at high-intensity accelerator experiments. We point out that in addition to the well studied pseudo-Dirac regime, this model can achieve the correct relic density in three different scenarios, and examine in details their properties and experimental prospects. Motivated by the recent anomalies in $b\rightarrow s$ transitions that emerged at LHCb, we consider a model with an $L_\mu - L_\tau$ gauge symmetry and additional vector-like fermions. We find that by introducing supersymmetry the model can be made consistent with the long-standing deviation in the measured value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $g-2$, and neutralino dark matter of broad mass ranges and properties. In particular, dark matter candidates include the well-known 1 TeV higgsino, which in the MSSM is typically not compatible with solutions to the $g-2$ puzzle. Moreover, its spin-independent cross section could be at the origin of the recent small excess in XENON-1T data. Minimal scenarios with light (sub-GeV) thermal dark matter are usually accompanied by a correspondingly light "dark sector". Taking as an example a simple fermionic dark matter model, we will show that the presence of the dark sector plays a key role in constraining such scenarios at accelerators experiments. Minimal scenarios with light (sub-GeV) dark matter whose relic density is obtained from thermal freeze-out must include new light mediators. In particular, a very well-motivated case is that of a new "dark" massive vector gauge boson mediator. The mass term for such mediator is most naturally obtained by a "dark Higgs mechanism" which leads to the presence of an often long-lived dark Higgs boson whose mass scale is the same as that of the mediator. We study the phenomenology and experimental constraints on two minimal, self-consistent dark sectors that include such a light dark Higgs boson. In one the dark matter is a pseudo-Dirac fermion, in the other a complex scalar. We find that the constraints from BBN and CMB are considerably relaxed in the framework of such minimal dark sectors. We present detection prospects for the dark Higgs boson in existing and projected proton beam-dump experiments. We show that future searches at experiments like Xenon1T or LDMX can probe all the relevant parameter space, complementing the various upcoming indirect constraints from astrophysical observations., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. The long-standing discrepancy between the experimental determination by the Muon $g-2$ Collaboration at Brookhaven and the Standard Model predictions for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon cannot be explained within simple unified framework like the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, but it can within its extension with vector-like fermions. In this paper we consider a model with an additional vector-like $5+\bar{5}$ pair of $SU(5)$. Within this model we first identify its parameter space that is consistent with the current discrepancy and show that this implies the lighter chargino mass in the range of $700-1200$ GeV. We examine how it is affected by constraints from electroweak sparticle search at the LHC based on 13 TeV search with 36.1 ${fb}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. We show that null trilepton signal searches coming from chargino-neutralino pair production significantly constrains the allowed parameter space except when the chargino-neutralino mass difference is relatively small, below about 10 GeV. Next we consider the expected impact of the New Muon $g-2$ experiment at Fermilab with its projected sensitivity reach of $7\,\sigma$ and, assuming it confirms the current discrepancy, show that the remaining parameter space of the considered model will be in strong tension with the current LHC limits., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, References added

We review several current aspects of dark matter theory and experiment. We overview the present experimental status, which includes current bounds and recent claims and hints of a possible signal in a wide range of experiments: direct detection in underground laboratories, gamma-ray, cosmic ray, X-ray, neutrino telescopes, and the LHC. We briefly review several possible particle candidates for a Weakly Interactive Massive Particle (WIMP) and dark matter that have recently been considered in the literature. We pay particular attention to the lightest neutralino of supersymmetry as it remains the best motivated candidate for dark matter and also shows excellent detection prospects. Using the existing simplified model framework, we build several dark matter models which have suppressed spin-independent scattering cross section. We show that the scattering cross section can vanish due to interference effects with models obtained by simple combinations of simplified models. For weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) masses $\gtrsim$10 GeV, collider limits are usually much weaker than the direct detection limits coming from LUX or XENON100. However, for our model combinations, LHC analyses are more competitive for some parts of the parameter space. We examine the question to what extent prospective detection of dark matter by direct and indirect- detection experiments could shed light on what fraction of dark matter was generated thermally via the freeze-out process in the early Universe. By simulating putative signals that could be seen in the near future and using them to reconstruct WIMP dark matter properties, we show that, in a model- independent approach this could only be achieved in a thin sliver of the parameter space. However, with additional theoretical input the hypothesis about the thermal freeze-out as the dominant mechanism for generating dark matter can potentially be verified. We analyze two minimal supersymmetric constrained models with low-energy vector-like matter preserving gauge coupling unification. In one we add to the MSSM spectrum a pair of 5-plets of SU(5), in the other a pair of 10-plets. We show that the muon g-2 anomaly can be explained in these models while retaining perturbativity up to the unification scale, satisfying electroweak and flavor precision tests and current LHC data. We examine also some related phenomenological features of the models, including Higgs mass, fine-tuning, dark matter and several LHC signatures. We examine the projected ability to reconstruct the mass, scattering, and annihilation cross section of dark matter in the new generation of large underground detectors, XENON-1T, SuperCDMS, and DarkSide-G2, in combination with diffuse gamma radiation from expected 15 years of data from Fermi-LAT observation of 46 local spiral dwarf galaxies and projected CTA sensitivity to a signal from the Galactic Center. To this end we consider several benchmark points spanning a wide range of WIMP mass, different annihilation final states, and large enough event rates to warrant detection in one or more experiments. As previously shown, below some 100 GeV only direct detection experiments will in principle be able to reconstruct the WIMP mass well. This may, in case a signal at Fermi-LAT is also detected, additionally help restricting \sigma v and the allowed decay branching rates. In the intermediate range between some 100 GeV and up a few hundred GeV, direct and indirect detection experiments can be used in complementarity to ameliorate the respective determinations, which in individual experiments can at best be rather poor, thus making the WIMP reconstruction in this mass range very challenging. At large WIMP mass, ~1 TeV, CTA will have the ability to reconstruct mass, annihilation cross section, and the allowed decay branching rates to very good precision for the $\tau^+\tau^-$ or purely leptonic final state, good for the $W^+W^-$ case, and rather poor for $b\bar{b}$. A substantial improvement can potentially be achieved by reducing the systematic uncertainties, increasing exposure, or by an additional measurement at Fermi-LAT that would help reconstruct the annihilation cross section and the allowed branching fractions to different final states., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures. We construct models of dark matter with suppressed spin-independent scattering cross section utilizing the existing simplified model framework. Even simple combinations of simplified models can exhibit interference effects that cause the tree level contribution to the scattering cross section to vanish, thus demonstrating that direct detection limits on simplified models are not robust when embedded in a more complicated and realistic framework. In general for fermionic WIMP masses >10 GeV direct detection limits on the spin-independent scattering cross section are much stronger than those coming from the LHC. However these model combinations, which we call less-simplified models, represent situations where LHC searches become more competitive than direct detection experiments even for moderate dark matter mass. We show that a complementary use of several searches at the LHC can strongly constrain the direct detection blind spots by setting limits on the coupling constants and mediators' mass. We derive the strongest limits for combinations of vector + scalar, vector + "squark", and "squark" + scalar mediator, and present the corresponding projections for the LHC 14 TeV for a number of searches: mono-jet, jets + missing energy, and searches for heavy vector resonances., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures. We examine axino dark matter in the regime of a low reheating temperature T_R after inflation and taking into account that reheating is a non-instantaneous process. This can have a significant effect on the dark matter abundance, mainly due to entropy production in inflaton decays. We study both thermal and non-thermal production of axinos in the context of the MSSM with ten free parameters. We identify the ranges of the axino mass and the reheating temperature allowed by the LHC and other particle physics data in different models of axino interactions. We confront these limits with cosmological constraints coming the observed dark matter density, large structures formation and big bang nucleosynthesis. We find a number of differences in the phenomenologically acceptable values of the axino mass and the reheating temperature relative to previous studies. In particular, an upper bound on the axino mass becomes dependent on T_R, reaching a maximum value at T_R~10^2 GeV. If the lightest ordinary supersymmetric particle is a wino or a higgsino, we obtain lower a limit of approximately 10 GeV for the reheating temperature. This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $\tau\to 3\mu$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed. We demonstrate that the SHiP experiment has a unique potential to discover new physics and can directly probe a number of solutions of beyond the Standard Model puzzles, such as neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe, dark matter, and inflation, Comment: 200 pages + appendices/references

We consider the possibility that the muon g-2 anomaly, $\delta(g-2)$, finds its origins in low energy supersymmetry (SUSY). In the general MSSM the parameter space consistent with $\delta(g-2)$ and correct dark matter relic density of the lightest neutralino easily evades the present direct LHC limits on sparticle masses and also lies to a large extent beyond future LHC sensitivity. The situation is quite different in GUT-defined scenarios where input SUSY parameters are no longer independent. We analyze to what extent the LHC can probe a broad class of GUT-inspired SUSY models with gaugino non-universality that are currently in agreement with the bounds from $\delta(g-2)$, as well as with the relic density and the Higgs mass measurement. To this end we perform a detailed numerical simulation of several searches for electroweakino and slepton production at the LHC and derive projections for the LHC 14 TeV run. We show that, within GUT-scale SUSY there is still plenty of room for the explanation of the muon anomaly, although the current LHC data already imply strong limits on the parameter space consistent with $\delta(g-2)$. On the other hand, we demonstrate that the parameter space will be basically fully explored within the sensitivity of the 14 TeV run with 300 fb$^{-1}$. This opens up the interesting possibility that, if the g-2 anomaly is real then some positive signals must be detected at the LHC, or else these models will be essentially ruled out. Finally, we identify the few surviving spectra that will provide a challenge for detection at the LHC 14 TeV run and we characterize their properties., Comment: 38 pages, 10 figures. We revisit the light pseudoscalar $A_1$ in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with partial universality at some high unification scale in order to delineate the parameter space regions consistent with up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints and examine to what extent this state can be probed by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during Run 2. We find that it can be accessible through a variety of signatures proceeding via $A_1\to \tau^+\tau^-$ and/or $b\bar b$, the former assuming hadronic decays and the latter two $b$-tags within a fat jet or two separate slim ones. The discovery of a light, singlet-like pseudoscalar Higgs boson, $A_1$, of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) could provide a hallmark signature of non-minimal supersymmetry. We review here the potential of the LHC to probe such a light $A_1$ in the decays of one of the heavier scalar Higgs bosons of the NMSSM. We find the production of pairs of the $A_1$, with a mass below 60 GeV or so, via decays of the two lightest scalar states to be especially promising, for an integrated luminosity as low as 30/fb. We investigate the prospects for detection of neutralino dark matter in the 19-parameter phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM). We explore very wide ranges of the pMSSM parameters but pay particular attention to the higgsino-like neutralino at the ~ 1 TeV scale, which has been shown to be a well motivated solution in many constrained supersymmetric models, as well as to a wino-dominated solution with the mass in the range of 2-3 TeV. After summarising the present bounds on the parameter space from direct and indirect detection experiments, we focus on prospects for detection of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). To this end, we derive a realistic assessment of the sensitivity of CTA to photon fluxes from dark matter annihilation by means of a binned likelihood analysis for the Einasto and Navarro-Frenk-White halo profiles. We use the most up to date instrument response functions and background simulation model provided by the CTA Collaboration. We find that, with 500 hours of observation, under the Einasto profile CTA is bound to exclude at the 95% C.L. almost all of the ~ 1 TeV higgsino region of the pMSSM, effectively closing the window for heavy supersymmetric dark matter in many realistic models. CTA will be able to probe the vast majority of cases corresponding to a spin-independent scattering cross section below the reach of 1-tonne underground detector searches for dark matter, in fact even well below the irreducible neutrino background for direct detection. On the other hand, many points lying beyond the sensitivity of CTA will be within the reach of 1-tonne detectors, and some within collider reach. Altogether, CTA will provide a highly sensitive way of searching for dark matter that will be partially overlapping and partially complementary with 1-tonne detector and collider searches, thus being instrumental to effectively explore the nearly full parameter space of the pMSSM., Comment: 35 pages, 14 figures, minor corrections and citations added, version to appear in JHEP

The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) contains a singlet-like pseudoscalar Higgs boson in addition to the doublet-like pseudoscalar of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. This new pseudoscalar can have a very low mass without violating the LEP exclusion constraints and it can potentially provide a hallmark signature of non-minimal supersymmetry at the LHC. In this analysis we revisit the light pseudoscalar in the NMSSM with partial universality at some high unification scale. We delineate the regions of the model's parameter space that are consistent with the up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints, from both Higgs boson searches and elsewhere (most notably $b$-physics), and examine to what extent they can be probed by the LHC. To this end we review the most important production channels of such a Higgs state and assess the scope of its observation at the forthcoming Run-2 of the LHC. We conclude that the $b\bar{b}$-associated production of the pseudoscalar, which has been emphasised in previous studies, does not carry much promise anymore, given the measured mass of the Higgs boson at the LHC. However, the decays of one of the heavier scalar Higgsbosons of the NMSSM can potentially lead to the discovery of its light pseudoscalar. Especially promising are the decays of one or both of the two lightest scalar states into a pseudoscalar pair and of the heaviest scalar into a pseudoscalar and a $Z$ boson. Increasingly stringent limits from LHC searches for new physics, coupled with lack of convincing signals of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) in dark matter searches, have tightly constrained many realizations of the standard paradigm of thermally produced WIMPs as cold dark matter. In this article, we review more generally both thermally and non-thermally produced dark matter (DM). One may classify DM models into two broad categories: one involving bosonic coherent motion (BCM) and the other involving WIMPs. BCM and WIMP candidates need, respectively, some approximate global symmetries and almost exact discrete symmetries. Supersymmetric axion models are highly motivated since they emerge from compelling and elegant solutions to the two fine-tuning problems of the Standard Model: the strong CP problem and the gauge hierarchy problem. We review here non-thermal relics in a general setup, but we also pay particular attention to the rich cosmological properties of various aspects of mixed SUSY/axion dark matter candidates which can involve both WIMPs and BCM in an interwoven manner. We examine a scenario in which the reheating temperature $T_R$ after inflation is so low that it is comparable to, or lower than, the freeze out temperature of ordinary WIMPs. In this case the dark matter relic abundance is reduced, thus relaxing the impact of the usually strong constraint coming from the requirement that the universe does not overclose. We first re-examine the dynamics of freezeout during reheating. Next we apply a Bayesian approach to study the parameter space of the MSSM with ten free parameters, the CMSSM and the singlino-dominated regions of the NMSSM. In each case we find dramatic departures from the usually considered regime of high $T_R$, with important implications for direct detection dark matter searches. In the MSSM we examine WIMP mass range up to ~5 TeV, and find regions of bino dark matter over the whole mass range, and of higgsino dark matter with mass over a similar range but starting from the ~1 TeV value of the standard high $T_R$ scenario. We show that the prospects for bino detection strongly depend on $T_R$, while the higgsino is for the most part detectable by future one-tonne detectors. The wino, which is excluded in the standard scenario, becomes allowed again if its mass is roughly above 3.5 TeV, and can be detectable. In the CMSSM, the bino and higgsino mass ranges become more constrained although detection prospects remain similar. In the Next-to-MSSM at low enough $T_R$ wide ranges of singlino-dominated parameter space of the model become cosmologically allowed. We also study the contribution to the DM relic density from direct and cascade decays of the inflaton. Finally, we consider the case of a gravitino as dark matter. We find strong bounds from overclosure and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, and derive lower limits on $T_R$ which depend on the gravitino mass and on the nature of the lightest ordinary superpartner., Comment: section and references added

We present an updated analysis of the CMSSM and the NUHM using the latest experimental data and numerical tools. We map out favored regions of Bayesian posterior probability in light of data from the LHC, flavor observables, the relic density and dark matter searches. We present some updated features with respect to our previous analyses: we include the effects of corrections to the light Higgs mass beyond the 2-loop order using FeynHiggs v2.10.0; we include in the likelihood the latest limits from direct searches for squarks and gluinos at ATLAS with ~20/fb; the latest constraints on the spin-independent scattering cross section of the neutralino from LUX are applied taking into account uncertainties in the nuclear form factors. We find that in the CMSSM the posterior distribution now tends to favor smaller values of Msusy than in the previous analyses. As a consequence, the statistical weight of the A-resonance region increases to about 30% of the total probability, with interesting new prospects for the 14 TeV run at the LHC. The most favored region, on the other hand, still features multi-TeV squarks and gluinos, and ~1TeV higgsino dark matter whose detection prospects by current and one-tonne detectors look very promising. The same region is predominant in the NUHM, although the A-resonance region is also present there as well as a new solution, of neutralino-stau coannihilation through the channel stau stau -> hh at very large \mu. We derive the expected sensitivity of the future CTA experiment to ~1 TeV higgsino dark matter for both models and show that the prospects for probing both models are realistically good. We examine the issue of fine tuning in the MSSM with GUT-scale boundary conditions. We identify specific unification patterns and mass relations that can lead to a significant lowering of the fine tuning due to gauginos, scalars, and the \mu\ parameter, relative to the simplest unification conditions. We focus on a phenomenologically interesting region that is favored by the Higgs mass and the relic density where the dark matter is a nearly pure higgsino with mass given by \mu~1 TeV while the scalars and gauginos have masses in the multi-TeV regime. There, we find that the fine tuning can be reduced to the level of a few percent. Despite the gluino mass in the ballpark of 2 TeV, resulting mass spectra will be hard to explore at the LHC, but good prospects for detection come from dark matter direct detection experiments. Finally, we demonstrate with a specific example how the conditions and mass relations giving low fine tuning can originate in the context of supergravity and Grand Unified Theories., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures. We review the status of axino dark matter. Two hierarchy problems, the strong CP problem and the gauge hierarchy problem, have led to introducing into particle physics a spontaneously broken global Peccei-Quinn symmetry and a softly broken supersymmetry, respectively. Combining them implies the presence of not only an axion, but also of its scalar component, saxion, and their fermionic partner, axino. Among these, the axion and the axino are attractive dark matter candidates. Various possibilities for the axino as dark matter are discussed., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We explore the MSSM with 9 free parameters (p9MSSM) that have been selected as a minimum set that allows an investigation of neutralino dark matter and collider signatures while maintaining consistency with several constraints. These include measurement of the dark matter relic density from PLANCK, main properties of the discovered Higgs boson, LHC direct SUSY searches, recent evidence for a Standard Model-like BR(Bs -> \mu+ \mu-), and the measurement of \delta(g-2), plus a number of other electroweak and flavor physics constraints. We perform a simulation of two LHC direct SUSY searches at sqrt(s)=8 TeV: the CMS inclusive \alpha_T search for squarks and gluinos and the CMS electroweak production search with 3l+E_T^miss in the final state. We use the latter to identify the regions of the parameter space, consistent at 2\sigma\ with \delta(g-2), that are not excluded by the direct limits from the electroweak production. We find that they correspond to a neutralino mass in the window 200 GeV

We propose an experimental test of a scenario in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in which both the lightest scalar and the lightest pseudoscalar Higgs bosons have masses around 125 GeV. The pseudoscalar can contribute significantly to the gamma.gamma rate at the LHC due to light Higgsino-like charginos in its effective one-loop coupling to two photons. Such charginos are obtained for small values of the mu_eff parameter which also results in enhanced b.b-bar and tau+.tau- rates compared to those expected for a Standard Model Higgs boson. This scenario should result in a clear discrepancy between the observed rates in these three decay channels and those in the WW and ZZ channels, since the pseudoscalar does not couple to the W and Z bosons. However, in the dominant gluon fusion production mode the pseudoscalar will stay hidden behind the SM-like scalar Higgs boson and in order for it to be observable the associated b.b-bar.h production mode has to be considered, the cross section for which is tiny in the Standard Model but tan.beta-enhanced in supersymmetry. We analyze the constrained NMSSM with non-universal Higgs sector parameters and identify regions of its parameter space where the lightest pseudoscalar with mass around 125 GeV and strongly enhanced gamma.gamma (up to 60%), b.b-bar and tau+.tau- rates in the b.b-bar.h mode can be obtained., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. We examine the prospects of using two alternative and complementary ways to explore the regions that are favored by global constraints in two simple unified supersymmetric models: the CMSSM and the NUHM. First, we consider BR(Bs->\mu\mu), which has recently been for the first time measured by LHCb. In the CMSSM we show that ultimate, but realistic, improvement in the determination of the observable to about 5-10% around the Standard Model value would strongly disfavor the A-funnel region, while not affecting much the other favored regions. Second, we show that all the favored regions of the CMSSM will be, for the most part, sensitive to direct dark matter searches in future one-tonne detectors. A signal at low WIMP mass (<=450 GeV) and low spin-independent cross section would then strongly favor the stau coannihilation region while a signal at higher WIMP mass (~800 GeV to ~1.2 TeV) would clearly point to the region where the neutralino is higgsino-like with mass ~1 TeV. A nearly complete experimental testing of the CMSSM over multi-TeV ranges of superpartner masses, far beyond the reach of direct SUSY searches at the LHC, can therefore be achievable. In the NUHM, in contrast, similar favored regions exist but a sample study reveals that even a precise determination of BR(Bs->\mu\mu) would have a much less constraining power on the model, including the A-funnel region. On the other hand, this could allow one to, by detecting in one-tonne detectors a signal for 500 GeV

We investigate gravitino dark matter produced thermally at high temperatures and in decays of a long-lived sneutrino. We consider the Non-Universal Higgs Model and a generalized gauge mediation model, and in each case identify sneutrino LOSP regions of the parameter space consistent with the mass of the Higgs-like boson observed at the LHC. We apply relevant collider and cosmological bounds, including constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and from warm dark matter on large scale structures. Generally, we find allowed values of the reheating temperature TR below 10^9 GeV, i.e. somewhat smaller than the values needed for thermal leptogenesis, even with a conservative lower bound of 122 GeV on the Higgs mass. Requiring mass values closer to 126 GeV implies TR below 10^7 GeV and the gravitino mass less than 10 GeV., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, version published in JHEP

We present the first global analysis of the Constrained NMSSM that investigates the impact of the recent discovery of a 126 GeV Higgs-like boson, of the observation of a signal for BR(B_s->\mu^+\mu^-), and of constraints on supersymmetry from ~5/fb of data accumulated at the LHC, as well as of other relevant constraints from colliders, flavor physics and dark matter. We consider three possible cases, assuming in turn that the discovered Higgs boson is: i) the lightest Higgs boson of the model; ii) the next-to-lightest Higgs boson; and iii) a combination of both roughly degenerate in mass. The likelihood function for the Higgs signal uses signal rates in the \gamma\gamma\ and ZZ --> 4l channels, while that for the Higgs exclusion limits assumes decay through the \gamma\gamma, \tau\tau, ZZ and W^+W^- channels. In all cases considered we identify the 68% and 95% credible posterior probability regions in a Bayesian approach. We find that, when the constraints are applied with their respective uncertainties, the first case shows strong CMSSM-like behavior, with the stau coannihilation region featuring highest posterior probability, the best-fit point, a correct mass of the lightest Higgs boson and the lighter stop mass in the ballpark of 1 TeV. The second and the third cases, on the other hand, while allowed are disfavored by the constraints from direct detection of dark matter and from BR(B_s->\mu^+\mu^-). Without the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon the fit improves considerably, especially for negative effective \mu\ parameter. We present an updated and extended global analysis of the Constrained MSSM (CMSSM) taking into account new limits on supersymmetry from ~5/fb data sets at the LHC. In particular, in the case of the razor limit obtained by the CMS Collaboration we simulate detector efficiency for the experimental analysis and derive an approximate but accurate likelihood function. We discuss the impact on the global fit of a possible Higgs boson with mass near 125 GeV, as implied by recent data, and of a new improved limit on BR(B_s->\mu\mu). We identify high posterior probability regions of the CMSSM parameters as the stau-coannihilation and the A-funnel region, with the importance of the latter now being much larger due to the combined effect of the above three LHC results and of dark matter relic density. We also find that the focus point region is now disfavored. Ensuing implications for superpartner masses favor even larger values than before, and even lower ranges for dark matter spin-independent cross section, \sigma^{SI}_p<10^{-9} pb. We also find that relatively minor variations in applying experimental constraints can induce a large shift in the location of the best-fit point. This puts into question the robustness of applying the usual chisquare approach to the CMSSM. We discuss the goodness-of-fit and find that, while it is difficult to calculate a p-value, the g-2 constraint makes, nevertheless, the overall fit of the CMSSM poor. We consider a scan without this constraint, and we allow \mu\ to be either positive or negative. We find that the global fit improves enormously for both signs of \mu, with a slight preference for \mu<0 caused by a better fit to BR(b->s\gamma) and BR(B_s->\mu\mu)., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures. We investigate the impact of recent limits from LHC searches for supersymmetry and from direct and indirect searches for dark matter on global Bayesian inferences of the parameter space of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM). In particular we apply recent exclusion limits from the CMS \alpha_T analysis of 1.1/fb of integrated luminosity, the current direct detection dark matter limit from XENON100, as well as recent experimental constraints on \gamma-ray fluxes from dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies of the Milky Way from the FermiLAT telescope, in addition to updating values for other non-LHC experimental constraints. We extend the range of scanned parameters to include a significant fraction of the focus point/hyperbolic branch region. While we confirm earlier conclusions that at present LHC limits provide the strongest constraints on the model's parameters, we also find that when the uncertainties are not treated in an excessively conservative way, the new bounds from dwarf spheroidal have the power to significantly constrain the focus point/hyperbolic branch region. Their effect is then comparable, if not stronger, to that from XENON100. We further analyze the effects of one-year projected sensitivities on the neutrino flux from the Sun in the 86-string IceCube+DeepCore configuration at the South Pole. We show that data on neutrinos from the Sun, expected for the next few months at IceCube and DeepCore, have the potential to further constrain the same region of parameter space independently of the LHC and can yield additional investigating power for the model., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, version published in PRD

The CMS Collaboration has released the results of its search for supersymmetry, by applying an alphaT method to 1.1/fb of data at 7 TeV. The null result excludes (at 95% CL) a low-mass region of the Constrained MSSM's parameter space that was previously favored by other experiments. Additionally, the negative result of the XENON100 dark matter search has excluded (at 90% CL) values of the spin-independent scattering cross sections sigma^SI_p as low as 10^-8 pb. We incorporate these improved experimental constraints into a global Bayesian fit of the Constrained MSSM by constructing approximate likelihood functions. In the case of the alphaT limit, we simulate detector efficiency for the CMS alphaT 1.1/fb and validate our method against the official 95% CL contour. We identify the 68% and 95% credible posterior regions of the CMSSM parameters, and also find the best-fit point. We find that the credible regions change considerably once a likelihood from alphaT is included, in particular the narrow light Higgs resonance region becomes excluded, but the focus point/horizontal branch region remains allowed at the 1sigma level. Adding the limit from XENON100 has a weaker additional effect, in part due to large uncertainties in evaluating sigma^SI_p, which we include in a conservative way, although we find that it reduces the posterior probability of the focus point region to the 2sigma level. The new regions of high posterior favor squarks lighter than the gluino and all but one Higgs bosons heavy. The dark matter neutralino mass is found in the range 250 GeV <~ m_Chi1 <~ 343 GeV (at 1sigma) while, as the result of improved limits from the LHC, the favored range of sigma^SI_p is pushed down to values below 10^{-9} pb. We highlight tension between (g-2)_mu and BR(b->sg), which is exacerbated by including the alphaT limit; each constraint favors a different region of the CMSSM's mass parameters., Comment: Accepted by PRD. Axino arises in supersymmetric versions of axion models and is a natural candidate for cold or warm dark matter. Here we revisit axino dark matter produced thermally and non-thermally in light of recent developments. First we discuss the definition of axino relative to low energy axion one for several KSVZ and DFSZ models of the axion. Motivated by the recent re-confirmation by CoGENT of the low-energy excess of events observed last year, and the recent improved limits from the XENON-100 experiment that are in contention with the CoGENT data, we re-examine the low mass neutralino region of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, both without assuming gaugino mass unification. We make several focused scans for each model, determining conservative constraints on input parameters. We then determine how these constraints are made increasingly stringent as we re-invoke our experimental constraints involving the dark matter relic abundance, collider constraints from LEP and the Tevatron, and then from flavour physics, as a series of successive 2 sigma hard cuts. We find that for both models, when all relevant constraints are applied in this fashion, we do not generate neutralino LSPs that possess a spin-independent scattering cross section in excess of 10^-5 pb and a mass ~7 GeV < m_chi < ~9 GeV that is necessary in order to explain the CoGENT observations., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

We identify a benchmark point in the CMSSM's heavy stau-coannihilation region, which is favored by experiments, and demonstrate that it could be accessible to the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV with 300/fb of integrated luminosity via a golden decay measurement. With Monte-Carlo, we simulate sparticle production and subsequent golden decay at the event level and perform pseudo-measurements of sparticle masses from kinematic endpoints in invariant mass distributions. We find that two lightest neutralino masses and the first and second generation left-handed slepton and squark masses could be rather precisely measured with correlated uncertainties. We investigate whether from such measurements one could determine the CMSSM's Lagrangian parameters by including a likelihood from our pseudo-measurements of sparticle masses in a Bayesian analysis of the CMSSM's parameter space. We find that the CMSSM's parameters can be accurately determined, with the exception of the common trilinear parameter. Experimental measurements of the relic density by Planck and the Higgs boson's mass slightly improve this determination, especially for the common trilinear parameter. Finally, within our benchmark scenario, we show that the neutralino dark matter will be accessible to direct searches in future one tonne detectors., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures
