Purpose: The study aims to examine the factors that determine the success of graduates in the labour market. This success is measured in several ways, namely, above-average wages in the economy, employment in accordance with the field of study and job satisfaction. The research explores the employment outcomes of graduates from Jagiellonian University, which is the oldest and one of the best in Poland. Not only does the analysis focus on degree-related predictors such as discipline or faculty, but it is also extended to include activities undertaken during studies and family background. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis is based on data collected in the graduates' career survey, which is conducted six months after graduation. For this article, a database of over 6,000 graduates from four subsequent editions of the survey was compiled. In order to identify the predictors of graduates' success, a logistic regression model was applied. Findings: The study reveals that graduates' success in the labour market is influenced not only by their discipline, but also by the activities undertaken during their studies, the type of studies and demographic features. Studies in natural sciences give chance for higher earnings, job matching and satisfaction. The humanities and social sciences increase only graduates' group satisfaction. The impact of activities during studies is diversified -- those matched to studies increase the job matching and those unmatched lower the earnings, job matching and satisfaction. Parents' level of education resulted in salary increase. The results also confirm the premises of behavioural theory. Research limitations/implications: Firstly, the main research limitation is that data of one particular university's graduates are used, so the results should be interpreted in the context of Poland only. Secondly, the authors propose a precise concept of success; however, it could be refined in any future study. This limitation could be mitigated by the flexibility of the model, which guarantees that other predictors of success could be involved. Furthermore, the article was based on data collected before the COVID-19 pandemic, when the labour market was completely different, so it also could be revised now. Practical implications: The results of the analysis can be used when preparing the University's educational offer. Since various predictors are implemented in the model, the information could be useful not only for future students, but also for current students, so they can make a more data-driven decision about their future careers. Additionally, University careers' advisors are provided with knowledge on the determinants of graduates' success. Taking a broader view, the research findings are also informative for labour market institutions. Originality/value: The paper offers an advanced analysis in a field that is under-researched in many transition countries, including Poland, i.e. graduates' entry into the workplace. Although the study provides insight into the factors that determine the labour market success of one particular university's graduates, this modelling can be applied to the empirical data of another higher education institution's (HEI's) graduates.

This study assesses factors related to higher education, differentiating a group of university graduates in terms of their professional activity in the context of self-employment. It concerns graduates’ business behaviour six months, three years, and five years after graduation. We aimed to evaluate the impact of study-related entrepreneurship determinants within different time horizons after graduation. The analyses revealed that as the period from graduation increases, the proportion of graduates who are in business increases. The strength of the influence of factors related to university education is also changing. The probability of running a business after studies increases with the number of extracurricular activities. The type of activity is also important. We also noted differences between hiring and non-hiring experiences; those previously employed have a lower chance of running a business. The EP-PARTICLES study was created to assess the impact of air pollution on the health and mortality of the population of Eastern Poland. The biggest cities of the region are Lublin, Białystok, Olsztyn, Rzeszow, and Kielce, whose inhabitants constitute less than 25% of the total population of the analyzed region. The vast majority of air pollution studies to date have been conducted in heavily polluted areas, where patients are exposed to moderate to extreme concentrations of pollutants. The composition of the pollution itself is also not without significance, as it differs significantly from the types of smog we are familiar with. The type of air pollution known as Polish smog is rich in compounds such as PM2.5, PM10, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (benzo(a)pyrene) from low emissions associated with household heating with solid fuels (coal, wood, and often also waste) and imposes detrimental effects on the health and life of the population, in particular in the context of cardiovascular effects. In this publication, we aimed to present the baseline results of the EP-PARTICLES investigators' research up to this point and propose steps aimed at changing the state of air quality and reducing existing exposure. Fields covered so far include atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndromes, ischemic stroke, heart failure, renal function, and cardiovascular mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we ask about the capacity of macroprudential policies to reduce the procyclical impact of capital ratio on bank lending. We focus on aggregated macroprudential policy measures and on individual instruments and test whether their effect on the association between lending and capital depends on bank size. Applying the GMM 2-step Blundell and Bond approach to a sample covering over 60 countries, we find that macroprudential policy instruments reduce the procyclical impact of capital on bank lending during both crisis and non-crisis times. This result is stronger in large banks than in other banks. Of individual macroprudential instruments, only borrower-targeted LTV caps and DTI ratio weaken the association between lending and capital and thus act countecyclically. Generally, with our study we are able to support the view that macroprudential policy has the potential to curb the procyclical impact of bank capital on lending and therefore, the introduction of more restrictive international capital standards included in Basel III and of macroprudential policies are fully justified. For two groups of post-communist countries (CEE and CIS) we estimated the parameters of convergence equations on the basis of annual data. We depart from standard econometric theory, which involves panel regression techniques. We test cross-country heterogeneity of parameters within a system of Seemingly Unrelated Regression Equations (SURE). We show empirical evidence in favour of the variability of parameters describing the convergence effect and productivity growth rates across countries. Our approach seems a convincing alternative to the panel regression approach where random effects can be estimated, imposing an assumption about the constancy of structural parameters within the group of countries under analysis. We discuss the role of the global financial crisis in the heterogeneity of convergence processes and productivity at the country level. We analyze the effects of macroprudential policy and micro-prudential capital regulations on the procyclicality of loan-loss provisions, using individual bank information from over 65 countries. In this study we test whether the interaction between borrower targeted macroprudential policy instruments and restrictive micro-prudential capital regulations tends to adjust the countercyclical effect of borrower targeted instruments and capital regulations. To this end we apply the two-step GMM estimator with robust standards errors. Our analysis implies that merging restrictive borrower targeted instruments and capital regulations tends to weaken the countercyclical effect of borrower targeted macroprudential policy instruments and restrictive capital adequacy regulations. This paper attempts to find out whether better quality of investor protection matters for the effect of capital ratio on loan growth of large EU banks in 1996-2011. We focus on several measures of the quality of investor protection with a proven track record in the banking literature, i.e.: anti-self-dealing index, ex-ante-control and ex-post-control of anti-self-dealing indices, and creditor protection rights index. Our results show that better investor protection decreases the procyclical impact of capital on lending. This effect is statistically significant for the ex-post-control index. This is consistent with the view that better shareholders rights reduces bank risk-taking, in particular during economic booms, which results in weakened sensitivity of bank lending to capital ratios in economic downturns.
