Soil compaction is one of the main causes of soil degradation, and some parameters have been used to characterize it, like those related to compressibility and the degree of compactness. To evaluate the rotational grazing time during winter and the presence and absence of grazing, on the compressibility and degree of compactness of a Cambisol, an experiment was installed and consisted of corn planting for silage, a fallow and pasture planting period, with two treatments evaluating the amount of rotational grazing (two and three times in a period of, respectively, 2 and 3 months), subdivided into the presence and absence of dairy cattle grazing. The mean bulk density value of 1.47 Mg/m3 separates the occurrence (plastic deformation) or not (elastic deformation) of additional soil compaction, while the traffic of machinery and animal trampling should occur with soil moisture lower than 0.23 kg/kg, when the soil has a larger load-bearing capacity. For the conservation of soil structure, our study recommends the permanence of cattle in the plots for 30 to 40 min/day and an exit when the pasture height is 0.07 to 0.10 m, with two or three grazing in a period of, respectively, 2 and 3 months.

This article gives an alternative approach to the self-shrinking and self-expanding solutions of the curve shortening flow, which are related to singularity formation of the mean curvature flow. The motivation for the self-similar solutions arises from natural area preserving rescaling. Further we describe the self-similar solutions in terms of a simple ODE and give an alternative proof that they lie in planes., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

During the development stage of a space vehicle, instrumented tests are carried out on the ground to prove the operational capacity of each liquid-propellant rocket engine, which is installed in this type of vehicle. The task of elaborating a Test Bench project for a propulsion unit with this application is complex and involves several steps, one of these steps being related to the analysis of this bench capacity to meet the algorithms for the liquid-propellant rocket-engine full run of tests, which is considered fundamental for this project’s operational success. Due to the high costs involved in this project’s elaboration and execution, it is strategic to use computational resources to evaluate, by simulation, the main operational functionalities that are previously established for this bench to perform. In this context, this work presents a model proposal through Petri Nets to evaluate, by computer simulation, an architecture capacity that was designed for the Test Bench to meet an algorithm dedicated to the liquid-propellant pipelines purge during the run of hot tests with the liquid-propellant rocket engine. The method used in this work to carry out the simulation shows the operational response of each module of this architecture, in accordance with the steps contained in the purge algorithm, which allows for analyzing, for each event of the process, the Petri Nets properties, mainly those related to the conservativeness, liveliness, deadlock-type, and confusion-type conflicts. The simulation carried out with the proposed model allows for the portrayal of the physical architecture and the operational states of the purge system according to the steps foreseen in the algorithm, showing that the conservation property is met because the number of marks remains constant, the vivacity property is also met since all positions have been reached, and there is no mortal-type conflict, as the simulation is not stopped; only confusion-type conflict is identified, which was solved with the strategic insertion of resources in the model in order to fix crashes related to the competition for tokens in the transition-enabled entries. The satisfactory results obtained in these simulations suggest that the modules provided for this architecture are sufficient and appropriate for carrying out all the steps contained in the purge algorithm, which will minimize or even eliminate the disorders that may be caused by the presence of foreign elements in the propellant supply lines during the tests with the rocket engine.

ABSTRACT: The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda Smith, 1797 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous pest that causes losses in several crops. The knowledge of host plants is essential for establishing management and control strategies. The present study reported the first occurrence of S. frugiperda in Brazilian grapevines. It is recommended that further studies should be carried out in the laboratory to understand the biological aspects of the damage to different structures (leaves and grapes). This information will be essential to assess the potential of S. frugiperda damage to vines.

I classify spacelike self-similar shrinking solutions of the mean curvature flow in pseudo-euclidean space in arbitrary codimension, if the mean curvature vector is not a null vector and the principal normal vector is parallel in the normal bundle. Moreover, I exclude the existence of such self-shrinkers in several cases.

As the need for cloud services has been growing steadily, the size and energy consumption of datacenters have increased significantly over the past years. Due to economic and environmental constraints, energy efficiency in datacenters and greenhouse emissions have become a major concern. Renewable energy is widely seen as a promising solution to supply datacenters using local energy, without greenhouse gas emissions. However, the intermittent power generation resulting from the use of renewable energy imposes a paradigm change in the way energy and computation activities are managed. On the one hand, service placement and scheduling may be used on the IT (information technologies) side to adapt to the available power. On the other hand, the storage units may be used to lessen power generation variations. Existing literature and actual deployment mainly design optimization algorithms including the entire system (from cloud service to electrical management, the latter often being neglected or simplified). Conversely to these approaches, we propose a solution where each side optimizes its own objectives, both interacting through a negotiation loop process to reach a common agreement. In this paper, we present DATAZERO, a project developing this idea to ensure high availability of IT services, avoiding unnecessary redundancies, under the constraints due to the intermittent nature of electrical and cloud services flows.

Previous studies have reported that acrolein, may exert harmful effects on the brain. However, information regarding the neuroprotective properties of guarana against acrolein is not available. Due to the lack of research, we initiated the current study to investigate the effects of guarana extracts on acrolein-induced toxicity in the liver and the central nervous system of Wistar Rats. Twelve groups of 60 days old Wistar rats treated with guarana extracts (150, 250, and 350 mg/kg/day) for 8 weeks, were challenged with acrolein (2.5 mg/kg/day). Several parameters associated with oxidative damage to the brain and hepatic function, as well as behavior were evaluated. All tested concentrations of guarana extracts exerted protective effects against acrolein induced damage. No hepatic and oxidative damages or behavioral changes were observed in guarana control groups. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind and therefore a milestone in this field.

Background/Aims: Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been recently described with extracellular actions, where it is actively released in inflammatory conditions. Acting as DAMPs (damage associated molecular pattern), extracellular HSP70 (eHSP70) interacts with membrane receptors and activates inflammatory pathways. At this context, the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) emerges as a possible candidate for interaction with eHSP70. RAGE is a pattern-recognition receptor and its expression is increased in several diseases related to a chronic pro-inflammatory state. One of the main consequences of RAGE ligand-binding is the ERK1/2 (extracellular signal–regulated kinases)-dependent activation of NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa B), which leads to expression of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor alpha) and other cytokines. The purpose of this work is to elucidate if eHSP70 is able to evoke RAGE-dependent signaling using A549 human lung cancer cells, which constitutively express RAGE. Methods: Immunoprecipitation and protein proximity assay were utilized to demonstrate the linkage between RAGE and eHSP70. To investigate RAGE relevance on cell response to eHSP70, siRNA was used to knockdown the receptor expression. Signaling pathways activation were evaluated by western blotting, gene reporter luciferase and real time quantitative PCR. Results: Protein eHSP70 shown to be interacting physically with the receptor RAGE in our cell model. Treatment with eHSP70 caused ERK1/2 activation and NF-κB transactivation impaired by RAGE knockdown. Moreover, the stimulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines expression by eHSP70 was inhibited in RAGE-silenced cells. Finally, conditioned medium of eHSP70-treated A549 cells caused differential effects in monocytes cytokine expression when A549 RAGE expression is inhibited. Conclusions: Our results evidence eHSP70 as a novel RAGE agonist capable of influence the cross-talk between cancer and immune system cells.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) shows high incidence and mortality worldwide, particularly in Western and developed countries. The objective of this study is to evaluate the oncologic results during a minimum follow-up of 2 years of curable CRC patients submitted to laparoscopic resection in our environment, regarding to the development of hepatic metastases. Methods: Medical records of 189 colon and rectal patients with potentially curable adenocarcinoma who have been submitted to laparoscopic resection have been reviewed through a retrospective cohort between January 2005 and March 2012 at a single institution regarded as reference to this type of treatment. Pearson's χ2 and Long-rank tests have been used for statistical analysis and data was analyzed by statistic package STATA version 11.0. Results: The eligible population for the study was 146 patients, 91 women (62%), with a mean age of 61 ± 13 years. Minimum follow-up was 24 months, having an mean follow-up of 60 ± 27 months and an mean follow-up of global disease recurrence of 27 ± 11 months. Hepatic metastases occurred in 7.5% of the population, most from stage III, and the mean recurrence period was 25 ± 16 months. Conclusions: Laparoscopic resection for potentially curable CRC in this cohort did not change the long-term incidence of hepatic metastases, considering that our results are comparable to large randomized clinical trial results. Laparoscopic resection was effective and safe for analyzed patients, regarding long-term oncologic results. The Brazilian native Costus longebracteolatus and Costus spiralis ‘French Kiss’, in the family Costaceae, have been used as both cut flowers and cut foliage. It is known that Costus species grow better under partial shade, but studies on the influence of shading or light on plant growth, development, and flower production are still incipient. As this kind of information is essential on planning of planting, production, and agribusiness activities, the objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of different colored shade nets and light conditions on the initial growth of both C. longebracteolatus and C. spiralis ‘French Kiss’. Plants, obtained from cuttings of pseudostems, were cultivated under six light conditions, which comprised six treatments, along 270 days: red net with 50% shading, blue net with 50% shading, black net with 70% shading, black net with 50% shading, black net with 30% shading, and full sun. The initial growth of C. longebracteolatus (up to 270 days) is more successful under the blue net with 50% shading, which promoted highest values of pseudostem length and dry matter of aerial part. For C. spiralis ‘French Kiss’ plants, both the red and blue nets with 50% shading implied best results and differed for the other treatments with greater pseudostem length. Plant exposure to full sun inhibited growth and development, and favored early leaf necrosis.

In this work we studied the optical properties of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) produced by the thermal conversion of a precursor polymer blended with a synthetic dye (Reactive Black 5). The production of PPV by this method decreases the overall time and cost of the process. We observed that the introduction of the dye resulted in an additional absorbance band near 550–700 nm, which can be beneficial to the photon harvesting capacity of the polymer if it is used as the donor material in a photovoltaic device. We studied how the optical and structures properties of this blend change when different quantities of TiO2 nanoparticles are introduced. For that, thin films were produced by the cast deposition of pre-PPV:dye:TiO2. The scanning electronic microscopic images showed that the inorganic semiconductor form large agglomerates of approximately 200 nm, indicating a very rough surface where the dye can be adsorbed. The analysis of photoluminescence and Raman peaks indicated a reduction of the mean conjugation length of the polymer chains in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles.

As an additive in in vitro culture media, fruits have a great potential for facilitating economical orchid production because of lower technology requirements and the ease of obtaining raw materials to formulate culture media. We studied the in vitro growth of Cattleya bicolor Lindl. grown in a simplified culture medium supplemented with different kinds of fruit pulp. The experimental design was completely randomised, with eight seedlings per replication and ten replications per treatment, for a total of 80 seedlings per treatment. The culture medium was made using 150 g L -1 of pulp (without peel or seed) from the following fruits: ripe Santa Cruz tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.), dwarf bananas (Musa cavendishii L.) of intermediate ripeness, light green chayote (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw), ripe papaya (Carica papaya L.) or green coconut (Cocos nucifera L.).The treatment control was MS 50 %. The treatments and the control were kept in a growth chamber for seven months before evaluating seedling survival percentage, shoot height, number of leaves, rooting percentage, root number, root length and dry masses of shoot and roots. The highest percentages of seedling survival were obtained using MS 50 %, banana and coconut medium. The seedling survival and rooting percentages illustrate that it is possible to emphasise the culture medium MS 50% and the culture medium supplemented with coconut on the most traditional culture medium with banana or tomato pulp. For the in vitro development of Cattleya bicolor Lindl., a simplified culture medium supplemented with coconut pulp is the most suitable for use as an alternative to MS 50%. A simplified culture medium supplemented with papaya pulp is not recommended for the in vitro development of Cattleya bicolor Lindl.

Elasticity is one of the most known capabilities related to cloud computing, being largely deployed reactively using thresholds. In this way, maximum and minimum limits are used to drive resource allocation and deallocation actions, leading to the following problem statements: How can cloud users set the threshold values to enable elasticity in their cloud applications? And what is the impact of the application’s load pattern in the elasticity? This article tries to answer these questions for iterative high performance computing applications, showing the impact of both thresholds and load patterns on application performance and resource consumption. To accomplish this, we developed a reactive and PaaS-based elasticity model called AutoElastic and employed it over a private cloud to execute a numerical integration application. Here, we are presenting an analysis of best practices and possible optimizations regarding the elasticity and HPC pair. Considering the results, we observed that the maximum threshold influences the application time more than the minimum one. We concluded that threshold values close to 100% of CPU load are directly related to a weaker reactivity, postponing resource reconfiguration when its activation in advance could be pertinent for reducing the application runtime.

Epilepsy causes restrictions in the performance of various daily activities. The aiming of this study was to investigate whether these restrictions affect the perceived quality of life. The assessments Quality of Life in Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) were applied in a sample that consisted of a single group of 34 subjects with at least two years of uncontrolled seizures. The results indicated that the most affected domains of QOLIE-31 were seizure worry, 29.77 (±21.72), and effects of drugs, 49.75 (±28.58), and for the COPM, the average of performance and satisfaction were respectively 3.10 (±3.07) and 4.45 (±3.29), and performance limitations most frequently cited were maintain employment (18), left home alone (15) and courses (15). The application of the Spearman correlation coefficient showed that the three main performance limitations posed by the COPM, especially regarding the level of satisfaction, influence the perception of quality of life. Thus, occupational performance proves to be an important area of intervention with subjects with epilepsy.

- Abstract

The ideal interval between surveillance examinations is determined by clinical features and endoscopic findings considered as risk factors to the development of advanced colonic neoplasias. OBJECTIVE: To determine the development rate of advanced neoplasia in patients submitted to surveillance colonoscopy in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Three hundred and ninety two patients who underwent two or more complete colonoscopies between 1995 and 2005, and who have at least one diagnosed colorectal adenoma entered into the study. The endoscopic findings of the first and subsequent colonoscopies of each patient were analysed, considering advanced neoplasia as the main outcome. The patients enrolled were divided in accordance to the first colonoscopy findings in groups 1 or high risk; 2 or low risk; and 3 or without adenoma at the first colonoscopy. The development of advanced colorectal neoplasia and the period of surveillance until the outcome were analysed and compared among groups. RESULTS: Twenty eight per cent of patients had advanced adenomas at index colonoscopy; 57.8% presented with low grade dysplasia neoplastic lesions and 14.1% had no adenoma at the first examination. The mean age was 59.54 ± 11.74 years. Twenty six point four per cent of subjects from group 1 presented with advanced neoplasia during the surveillance period, while this outcome occurred in 10.9% and 5.3% of patients from groups 2 and 3, respectively (P

- Abstract
Objectives: The aims of this study were to evaluate and compare the effects that dexmedetomidine and methadone, either alone or in combination, have on the ocular variables of healthy adult cats when administered intramuscularly, as well as their reversal with atipamezole. Methods: A randomized crossover blinded study of 10 healthy cats was used to assess the effect of 0.2 mg/kg methadone (MET), 7.5 μg/kg dexmedetomidine (D7), 10 μg/kg dexmedetomidine (D10), 7.5 μg/kg dexmedetomidine and 0.2 mg/kg methadone (DM7) and 10 μg/kg dexmedetomidine and 0.2 mg/kg methadone (DM10) on intraocular pressure (IOP), tear production and pupil diameter (PD). The animals were evaluated for 30 mins. Afterwards, atipamezole was administered and ocular variables were evaluated for 30 mins. Results: D10, DM7 and DM10 significantly decreased mean IOP but MET or D7 did not. Tear production decreased significantly in all treatments, corresponding to 18%, 59%, 63%, 86% and 98% in MET, D7, D10, DM7 and DM10, respectively. PD increased in all treatments, but MET showed the highest PD. Thirty minutes after atipamezole (RT30), IOP returned to baseline with no difference between groups, and there was a significant increase in tear production, but the means were still different from baseline. Conclusions and relevance: Dexmedetomidine decreases IOP and tear production but increases PD in healthy cats. Atipamezole can partly reverse those alterations. Low-dose dexmedetomidine (7.5 µg/kg) promotes sedation without changing the IOP. All protocols significantly decrease tear production, and Schirmer tear test after sedation is not representative of non-sedated values. Methadone induces quick onset mydriasis without changing the IOP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Favorability analysis has been applied as a method to evaluate the correlation between the structural lineament and flow behavior in aquifers. The analysis was carried out in the outcropping areas of Tubarão Group, between the cities of Campinas and Sorocaba (São Paulo State, Brazil). The study area was chosen because of its geological complexity and the consequent lower predictability of well performance before drilling. To apply this method, we considered as “mineralized” areas those regions with highest specific capacity values, taking also into account six types of variables interpreted from radar images Landsat 7-ETM, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and structural geological maps. The results reveal that the region encompassing between the cities of Elias Fausto and Monte Mor presents the best correlation with structural lineation which can be a factor in the high potential for groundwater exploration in this area.

ABSTRACT The Guarani Aquifer System (GAS) encompasses almost all the Paraná and Chaco-Paraná sedimentary basins area. Sandstones from the Pirambóia, Rosário do Sul and Botucatu Formations in Brazil and Misiones Formation in Paraguay and Tacuarembó Formation in Uruguay and Argentina constitute the reservoirs of the GAS. This study aims to evaluate geological and air born geophysical data in order to generate the GAS conceptual model that will permit to establish the main groundwater flow and thermodynamic reactions conditioning. The GAS underlies an area around 1.195.000 km2. In the Parana State area, the aquifer clearly shows structural compartments limited by fractures filled with diabase dykes in consequence of the activation of the Ponta Grossa Arch. The same feature is supposed to occur in the areas of the Assunção Arch, Rio Grande Arch and Campo Grande Arch. In the diabase dykes vicinities the groundwater flows upwards discharging into the Serra Geral Aquifer as well as into the major drainage channels like the Iguaçu River. The Jurassic sandstone package on the top of the aquifer has an average porosity of 17% and hydraulic conductivity varying from 0,2 to 4,6 m/day. The Triassic sandstone package at the bottom has an average porosity of 16% and hydraulic conductivity varying from less than 0,01 to 4,6 m/day. The total volume of water stored in the aquifer is estimated in 46.280 km3 considering the average thickness of the aquifer as 228m. The most important GAS natural springs occur in areas with altitude below 400 m, predominantly at the main drainage channels margins like the Paraná, Paranapanema, Iraí, Piquiri, Iguaçu and Uruguai Rivers. In those areas are placed important resorts that use natural springs whose waters flow in the surface with temperatures that reach till 43 °C due to the aquifer geothermal properties.

Abstract Background Mutations associated with resistance to rifampin or streptomycin have been reported for W/Beijing and Latin American Mediterranean (LAM) strain families of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A few studies with limited sample sizes have separately evaluated mutations in katG, ahpC and inhA genes that are associated with isoniazid (INH) resistance. Increasing prevalence of INH resistance, especially in high tuberculosis (TB) prevalent countries is worsening the burden of TB control programs, since similar transmission rates are noted for INH susceptible and resistant M. tuberculosis strains. Results We, therefore, conducted a comprehensive evaluation of INH resistant M. tuberculosis strains (n = 224) from three South American countries with high burden of drug resistant TB to characterize mutations in katG, ahpC and inhA gene loci and correlate with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) levels and spoligotype strain family. Mutations in katG were observed in 181 (80.8%) of the isolates of which 178 (98.3%) was contributed by the katG S315T mutation. Additional mutations seen included oxyR-ahpC; inhA regulatory region and inhA structural gene. The S315T katG mutation was significantly more likely to be associated with MIC for INH ≥2 μg/mL. The S315T katG mutation was also more frequent in Haarlem family strains than LAM (n = 81) and T strain families. Conclusion Our data suggests that genetic screening for the S315T katG mutation may provide rapid information for anti-TB regimen selection, epidemiological monitoring of INH resistance and, possibly, to track transmission of INH resistant strains.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTAssuming the Brazilian context, emphasis is placed on occupational therapists’ reflections to contribute to an international dialogue on concepts that support practices in schools/the educational sector that are still little explored. Initially, the World Federation of Occupational Therapists’ position, which adheres to a certain perspective of ‘Inclusion’, applied to schooling processes is challenged. We aim to foster theoretical development about the concept of ‘Inclusion’ in education, in dialogue with occupational therapy and its proposals for this area. The defence of a democratic school by occupational therapists is advocated considering its limitations and possibilities in a society founded on inequality. The question remains as to which new concepts will underpin our practices or whether we can/should assume the task of rewriting/reframing them in search of what motivates us: concern to ensure, in daily professional practice, the access, permanence and, mainly, participation of those who are outside school.

- Abstract
Mycobacterium tuberculosisInhA (MtInhA) is an attractive enzyme to drug discovery efforts due to its validation as an effective biological target for tuberculosis therapy. In this work, two different virtual-ligand-screening approaches were applied in order to identify new InhA inhibitors’ candidates from a library of ligands selected from the ZINC database. First, a 3-D pharmacophore model was built based on 36 available MtInhA crystal structures. By combining structure-based and ligand-based information, four pharmacophoric points were designed to select molecules able to satisfy the binding features of MtInhA substrate-binding cavity. The second approach consisted of using four well established docking programs, with different search algorithms, to compare the binding mode and score of the selected molecules from the aforementioned library. After detailed analyses of the results, six ligands were selected for in vitroanalysis. Three of these molecules presented a satisfactory inhibitory activity with IC50values ranging from 24 (±2) μM to 83 (±5) μM. The best compound presented an uncompetitive inhibition mode to NADH and 2-trans-dodecenoyl-CoA substrates, with Kivalues of 24 (±3) μM and 20 (±2) μM, respectively. These molecules were not yet described as antituberculars or as InhA inhibitors, making its novelty interesting to start efforts on ligand optimization in order to identify new effective drugs against tuberculosis having InhA as a target. More studies are underway to dissect the discovered uncompetitive inhibitor interactions with MtInhA.

ABSTRACT: In the Paleoproterozoic Transamazonas Province, synkinematic granitogenesis has taken place synchronously with compressive tectonic stress. The synkinematic character of the granites is marked by their WNW elongate shape, and by the presence of pervasive and concordant synmagmatic foliation. Ductile shear zones are concordant to the previous regional WNW structures, and tend to be accommodated along contacts between Rhyacian synkinematic granitoids and both Archean orthogneisses and Siderian metabasites. Locally phyllonitic shear zones and brittle-ductile shear zones with cataclasites are oriented subparallel to the preexisting ductile foliation. Late orogenic brittle faults N30E-trending strike-slip faults are either sinistral or destral. 40Ar/39Ar dating of muscovite developed on fault planes gave ages of 1977 ± 8 Ma and 1968 ± 11 Ma. Structural and geochronological data from rocks of the Transamazonas Province permit to conclude that most mylonites and brittle structures were controlled by preexisting structures such as geological contacts and petrographic facies boundaries. Compressive tectonic stress would have initiated at ca. 2100 Ma, since the former magmatic arc (Bacajaí complex), still present at 2070 Ma when syntectonic granites were emplaced and remained until 1975 Ma after granite plutonism and regional cooling.

Amazon Basin ,structural analysis ,paleostress ,Geology ,QE1-996.5 - Abstract
