Abstract

The first stage of the FCC (Future Circular Collider) is a high-luminosity electron-positron collider (FCC-ee) with centre-of-mass energy ranging from 88 to 365 GeV, to study with high precision the Z, W, Higgs and top particles, with samples of $5 \times 10^{12}$ Z bosons, $10^8$ W pairs, $10^6$ Higgs bosons and $10^6$ top quark pairs. A cornerstone of the physics program lays in the precise (ppm) measurements of the W and Z masses and widths, as well as forward-backward asymmetries. To this effect the centre-of-mass energy distribution should be determined with the high precision. This document describes the capacity offered by FCC-ee, starting with transverse polarization of the beams around the Z pole and the W pair threshold. A running scheme based on regular measurements of the beam energy by resonant depolarization of pilot bunches, during physics data taking, is proposed. The design for polarization wigglers, polarimeter and depolarizer is outlined. The $e^\pm$ beam energies will be monitored with a relative precision of $10^{-6}$. The centre-of-mass energy is derived subject to further corrections, related to the beam acceleration, synchrotron radiation and beamstrahlung; these effects are identified and evaluated. Dimuon events $e^+e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, recorded in the detectors, provide with great precision the beam crossing angle, the centre-of-mass energy spread, and the $e^+$ and $e^-$ energy difference. Monitoring methods to minimize absolute error and relative uncertainties are discussed. The impact on the physics measurements is given. Abstract

A transverse gradient undulator (TGU) is a key component compensating for the relatively large energy spread of Laser Wakefield Accelerator (LWFA)-generated electron beams for realizing a compact Free Electron Laser (FEL). A superconducting TGU with 40 periods has been fabricated at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). In this contribution, we report that the superconducting TGU has been commissioned with nominal operational parameters at an off-line test bench. An experimental set-up for mapping the magnetic field on a two-dimensional grid in the TGU gap has been employed for the magnetic characterization. Abstract

A 40-period superconducting transverse gradient undulator (TGU) has been designed and fabricated at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Combining a TGU with a Laser Wakefield Accelerator (LWFA) is a potential key for realizing an extremely compact Free Electron Laser (FEL) radiation source. The TGU scheme is a viable option to compensate the challenging properties of the LWFA electron beam in terms of beam divergence and energy spread. In this contribution, we report on the operational experience of this TGU inside its own cryostat and show the current status of the TGU and the further plan for experiments. Abstract

The performance of the first superconducting cold-bore undulator in an electron storage ring is discussed. Findings reveal that the heat deposited by the beam of the undulator on the 8 mm gap is less than 1 W per 100 mA at 2.5 GeV.

Abstract

In the SASE3 beam line at the European XFEL a planar undulator produces linearly polarized radiation. In order to obtain a circularly polarized radiation an afterburner will be installed to produce coherent radiation with variable polarization. Recently Argonne National Lab developed a super conductive undulator (called SCAPE) for a storage ring which allows to change polarization direction and field strength without moving mechanically the undulator parts. In this paper it is investigated if a similar device could be useful for an FEL. In THz lasers an off-crest cavity adds a chirp to the bunch followed by a bunch compressor. Particles with different energies travel on different trajectories to the radiator. 2.) For EUV and X-ray FELs the beam enters an undulator which produces microbunches which then radiate. In this paper it is proposed to copy the THz laser scheme for EUV lasers. The incoming beam is chirped and a dogleg forces afterwards the particles with different energies to move on different parallel trajectories. Considering a detector plane perpendicular to the trajectories the particles with different energies arrive in general at different times. When in this plane for instance a TGU (Transverse Gradient Undulator) is positioned the emitted radiation in the TGU is monochromatic. If in addition chirp and dogleg are selected in such a way that the particles with different energies arrive at the same time at the entrance of the TGU the radiation is monochromatic and coherent similar to the THz laser concept., Published by JACoW, Geneva

Abstract

An experimental setup for the generation of monochromatic undulator radiation at the laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) in Jena using a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) is planned. Proper matching of the betatron functions and the dispersion of the electron beam to the undulator is essential. Therefor a beam transport system with strong focusing magnets and chromatic correction of these magnets is required. As a first step, a linear beam transport system without chromatic correction was assembled at the LWFA. With this setup the electron beam’s dispersion and the beta function of one selected energy are matched to the required parameters at the TGU. Abstract

At KIT we are currently constructing the compact linear accelerator FLUTE (Ferninfrarot Linac Und Test Experiment). This 41 MeV machine is aimed at accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation research, using ultra-short electron bunches. The electrons are generated at a photo-cathode using picosecond long UV laser pulses. A magnetic chicane is used to compress the bunches longitudinally to a few femtoseconds. Abstract

A new compact versatile linear accelerator named FLUTE (Ferninfrarot Linac Und Test Experiment) is currently under construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It will serve as an accelerator test facility and allow conducting a variety of accelerator physics studies. In addition, it will be used to generate intense, ultra-short THz pulses for photon science experiments. Abstract

FLUTE, a new linac-based test facility and THz source is currently being built at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with DESY and PSI. It consists of an RF photo gun and a traveling wave linac accelerating electrons to beam energies of ~41 MeV in the charge range from a few pC up to 3 nC. The electron bunch will then be compressed in a magnetic chicane in the range of 1 - 300 fs, depending on the charge, in order to generate coherent THz radiation with high peak power. The transport and matching of electron beams generated by a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) is a major challenge due to their large energy spread and divergence. Abstract

A new compact linear accelerator FLUTE is currently under construction at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with DESY and PSI. It aims at obtaining femtosecond electron bunches (~1fs - 300 fs) with a wide charge range (1 pC - 3 nC) and requires a precise bunch length diagnostic system. Here we present the layout of a bunch length monitor based on the electro-optic technique of spectral decoding using an Yb-doped fiber laser system (central wavelength 1030 nm) and a GaP crystal. Simulations of the electro-optic signal for different operation modes of FLUTE were performed and main challenges are discussed in this talk. Abstract

The International Large Detector (ILD) is a concept for a detector at the International Linear Collider, ILC. The ILC will collide electrons and positrons at energies of initially 500 GeV, upgradeable to 1 TeV. The ILC has an ambitious physics program, which will extend and complement that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A hallmark of physics at the ILC is precision. The clean initial state and the comparatively benign environment of a lepton collider are ideally suited to high precision measurements. To take full advantage of the physics potential of ILC places great demands on the detector performance. The design of ILD is driven by these requirements. Excellent calorimetry and tracking are combined to obtain the best possible overall event reconstruction, including the capability to reconstruct individual particles within jets for particle ow calorimetry. This requires excellent spatial resolution for all detector systems. A highly granular calorimeter system is combined with a central tracker which stresses redundancy and efficiency. In addition, efficient reconstruction of secondary vertices and excellent momentum resolution for charged particles are essential for an ILC detector. The interaction region of the ILC is designed to host two detectors, which can be moved into the beam position with a push-pull scheme. The mechanical design of ILD and the overall integration of subdetectors takes these operational condition s into account. 27. First Magnetic Tests of a Superconducting Damping Wiggler for the CLIC Damping Rings

Abstract

Two damping rings (e+, e-) are foreseen for the CLIC injection chain. In each damping ring 76 two meter long wigglers will be installed. The short period (40-50 mm), combined with a gap larger than 14 mm and a requested field in the mid-plane BPeak > 2 T requires the usage of superconducting technologies to meet these requirements. To demonstrate the feasibility of this wiggler design a short-model vertical racetrack wiggler (40 mm period; 16 mm gap) was built and successfully tested at CERN. The wiggler carries a current of 730 A and 910 A and reaches a mid-plane peak field of Bpeak = 2 T and Bpeak = 2.5 T at 4.2 K and 1.9 K, respectively. The results show that the wiggler model meets the magnetic requirements of the CLIC damping rings at 1.9 K. Abstract

Accurate magnetic field measurements are a prerequisite for the characterization and optimization of undulators. At the synchrotron light source ANKA there is an ongoing R&D program for superconducting insertion devices. Within this program a test stand for precise magnetic field measurements of superconductive coils was designed, built and installed at the Research Center Karlsruhe. Comprehensive magnetic measurements are performed to confirm the magnet design and to detect or correct field imperfections resulting from the manufacturing process. The magnetic field is measured along a fixed direction by Hall probes with a positioning precision of 3 μm. A NbTi undulator prototype with local correction coils was built to verify the performance of the superconductor and the shimming concept. In this contribution we describe the measuring test station and preliminary tests results including the efficiency of the shimming concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Superconducting undulators generate, for a given period length and a given gap, higher fields than permanent magnet undulators. Since in an undulator the photons add up coherently over the whole undulator length, even small magnetic field errors can disturb the superposition of photons and reduce the intensity of the generated photon beam. Therefore, as in any other undulator, the magnetic field has to be measured with high accuracy. In the presently existing magnetic measurement system for superconducting undulator mock-ups, the coils and the Hall probes are in liquid helium. In this paper a different technique is described. Coils and Hall probes are in vacuum and the coils are indirectly cooled by cryocoolers to 4 K. In order to speed up the cooling process the 4 K region is surrounded by a 80 K shield which is cooled by liquid nitrogen. The cryostat allows to measure coils up to a total length of 1.5 m. Abstract

Superconducting insertion devices are very attractive for synchrotron light sources. For a given gap and period length, higher fields can be reached in respect to permanent magnet insertion devices thus permitting to reach higher photon fluxes. A new R&D program has been recently launched at ANKA aiming for the development of the next generation superconducting insertion devices for light sources. A cold bore superconducting undulator (14 mm period length, 100 full periods long) is installed in the ANKA storage ring since three years. This will be replaced by an improved version which shows a more efficient cooling system and a high precision design aiming for reduced field errors. Two additional devices are scheduled. One will allow to' electrically switch the period length between 15 mm and 45 mm corresponding to an undulator and a wiggler mode, respectively. The other will be optimized for third generation light sources. It will be capable of tolerating higher beam heat loads up to 6 W while achieving very small field errors. The field error minimization will be obtained through the use of new shimming concepts which will correct inaccuracies due to manufacturing tolerances. The article focuses on the first beam experimental test of a superconductive undulator (SCU14) at the Institute for Synchrotron Radiation storage ring at the Karlsruhe Research Center in Karlsruhe, Germany. SCU14 has been designed by ACCEL Instruments GmbH for nanometer beamline. The experiment has been aimed at demonstrating that the device can be operated under conventional user considerations, which will pave way towards advancement in spectroscopy.
