1942 m. pavasarį užsienio reikalų sekretorius Anthony Edenas, ruošdamas Jungtinės Karalystės ir Sovietų Sąjungos strateginio bendradarbiavimo sutartį, kaip galimo kompromiso su Stalinu variantą parengė projektus, kuriais buvo numatyta riboto Baltijos valstybių suvereniteto galimybė. Teoriškai galima samprotauti, kad jeigu kompromisas būtų įgyvendintas, sovietai būtų gavę galimybę steigti Rytų Pabaltijyje savo karines bazes, bet Baltijos valstybės būtų išsaugojusios tam tikrą savarankiškumą – tai galėjo turėti palankesnes pasekmes tiek baltų nacijoms, tiek visam Vidurio Rytų Europos regionui. Henry'io Kissingerio nuomone, pasiekti kompromisą su Stalinu sutrukdė JAV prezidento Franklino D. Roosevelto idealizmas. Atliktas tyrimas atskleidžia Baltijos valstybių veiksnio vietą didžiosios politikos „virtuvėje“ ir leidžia teigti, kad Baltijos valstybių klausimo raidai negatyvų poveikį turėjo didžiųjų valstybių tarpusavio varžybos dėl galios ir dominavimo. In 1942, when drafting a strategic cooperation treaty between the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom, the foreign secretary Anthony Eden was responsible for preparing projects to solve the Balts’ problems, based on which the Baltic States could preserve limited sovereignty. This aspect has received little attention in historiography, seemingly because it is treated as an ephemeral, insignificant episode. It cannot be dismissed that the provision of a compromise with the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, which was in principle impossible, did apply. However, historical material suggests a different conclusion. This article was also inspired by Henry Kissinger’s opinion that it was the idealism of the US president Franklin D. Roosevelt that prevented Western states from reaching a compromise with Stalin. This article reveals what went on ‘behind the scenes’ in big politics: how the Baltic States factor, in itself rather insignificant to the big states, allows for identifying the prime goal of those big states, to seek power and dominance. Smolensko žemės prijungimas prie Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės 1395 m. labai paveikė Stačiatikių bažnyčios pareigūnų Smolensko žemėje padėtį. Šiame straipsnyje tiriama, kaip klostėsi Smolensko žemės bažnytinių pareigūnų karjera laikotarpiu, kai šis regionas priklausė Lietuvos Didžiajai Kunigaikštystei (1395–1514 m.). When the Land of Smolensk was annexed by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1395, the situation of the ecclesiastical officials of the Orthodox Church in this region changed significantly. The article investigates the development of the careers of the ecclesiastical officials of the Land of Smolensk during the period when this region belonged to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1395–1514). When conducting the research, we found the mentions of twenty ecclesiastical officials of the Orthodox Church who had served in the Land of Smolensk during the period of 1395–1514. Most of them (eleven) were bishops of Smolensk. The rest of the ecclesiastical officials were archimandrites and ihumens of monasteries and priests of churches. The data about archimandrites, ihumens, and priests are poor, we know very little about them. Much more data survived about bishops of Smolensk, the most important ecclesiastical officials of the Orthodox Church in the Land of Smolensk. Not much is known about the origin of all twenty ecclesiastical officials, but one can make an assumption that between 1395 and 1514, the majority of the bishops of Smolensk had come from other areas, while most of the archimandrites, ihumens, and priests could have been local inhabitants. However, different origin did not create a problem for the bishops of Smolensk in forging connections with the inhabitants of the Land of Smolensk. When the Grand Duchy of Lithuania occupied the region, the grand dukes of Lithuania started to interfere in its ecclesiastical affairs. The rulers were concerned with soliciting the support of the bishops of Smolensk for their politics. Some of the bishops participated in the plans to conclude an ecclesiastical union between the Orthodox believers and Catholics, which had been an interest of the grand dukes of Lithuania. The fact that as many as four bishops of Smolensk succeeded in becoming the metropolitans of Kiev, the most important ecclesiastical officials in the Kyiv metropolitan area, points to the importance of the bishops of Smolensk in the Kyiv metropolitan area and their connections with the central government of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the period of 1395–1514. Esama įvairių karo Ukrainoje aiškinimų. Šiame straipsnyje atsigręžiama į klasikinę karo tarp Spartos ir Atėnų istoriją, kaip ją nušviečia Tukididas, ir siekiama atskleisti karo „slaptąją priežastį“. Pastaroji siejama su Spartos politinės galios nusilpimu ir išaugusia Atėnų įtaka. Trumpa Tukidido Peloponeso karo analizė straipsnyje pasitelkiama kaip teorinis karkasas siekiant suprasti tautų ir jų lyderių elgesį, t. y. kodėl jie pradeda karą nesant karinės grėsmės jų pačių atžvilgiu. Tokiame kontekste keliamas klausimas, kodėl Rusija pradėjo karą prieš Ukrainą, pavojaus nekeliančią savo kaimynę. Sovietų Sąjunga galios požiūriu buvo lygiavertė NATO aljansui ir jos galią perėmė Rusija. Pastarajai nebuvo jokios Vakarų karinės invazijos grėsmės, tačiau ji karą pradėjo siekdama įrodyti, jog yra ne mažiau reikšminga nei Vakarai. Skirtumas tarp tradicinės Rusijos autokratijos ir Vakarų demokratijos yra tas, kad pastaroji „peržengia sienas“ savo patrauklumu, o ne karine jėga. There are various accounts for the war in Ukraine; this essay is not contesting such accounts but, taking the classical understanding of the war between Sparta and Athens, elucidated by Thucydides, there seems to be a “hidden reason”. The latter is the declining political significance of Sparta and the expanding importance of Athens. The brief analysis of the war by Thucydides is used to establish a framework for clear understanding of behavior of nations and their leaders when, despite an absense of military threat, they opt for war. Given this context, the question arises why Russia, not being threatened militarily, opts for war against its harmless neighbor. The Soviet Union was a global power equivalent to NATO alliance, and this power was inherited by Russia. The latter could not be afraid of military invasion by the West and yet it opted for war aiming to demonstrate that it is as significant as the West. The difference between Traditional Russian autocracy and modern Western democracy is such that the latter “crosses borders” by attraction and not by military power. Remiantis kino transnacionalumo ar mažosios valstybės kino koncepcijomis, straipsnyje bandoma ankstyvojo kino XIX a. pab. – XX a. pr. Rusijos imperijos Šiaurės vakarų krašte ir didžiausiame regiono mieste Vilniuje raidą įvertinti ne chronologiškai, bet tematiškai, per kino kultūros formavimosi ir kino tapimo estetiniu objektu sluoksnius. Ši prieiga suteikia kultūriškai naują bendravardiklinimo galimybę, leidžiančią ankstyvąjį kiną provincijoje matyti nebūtinai kaip tik vėluojantį ir provincijos provincionalumą išryškinantį reiškinį, bet priešingai – kaip bendrą Europos kino tradicijos dalį. Straipsnyje tai argumentuojama keliais aspektais. Pirma, parodant, kaip keitėsi (ir kaip ši kaita sutapo su Vakarų tendencijomis) kino samprata nuo atrakcionų kino į naratyvinį kiną. Antra, identifikuojant pokyčius kino teatrų repertuare ir nusistovinčiose ankstyvojo kino žiūrovų preferencijose. Leaning on the notions of transnationalism of cinema or Cinema of Small States, this article sets out to evaluate early cinema in the Northwestern Krai of the late 1800s–early 1900s Russian Empire and the region’s largest city, Vilnius, thematically, rather than chronologically, through the layers of the formation of film culture and the transformation of cinema into an aesthetic object. Such an approach presents a culturally new possibility of finding commonalities, allowing one to see early cinema in the provinces not necessarily as an always-late phenomenon that highlights the provinciality of the provinces, but on the contrary, as part of the overall European film tradition. This is argued from several aspects. Firstly, by showing how the perception of cinema has changed (and how this change coincided with Western trends) from cinema of attractions to narrative cinema; and secondly, by identifying changes in the repertoire of cinemas and in the established preferences of the early cinema audiences. The article analyzes the establishment and operations of the Russian-Lithuanian and Russian-Latvian History Committees as an instrument of historical policy that was initiated to promote bilateral relations between the Russian Federations, Lithuania and Latvia. In Russia and the Baltic states, historical policy is regarded as an important instrument of building national identity that is rooted in national symbols. The historical narrative adopted by Lithuania and Latvia is often at odds with Russian historical memory, which is why bilateral history committees were established to foster debate on controversial issues. The Russian-Lithuanian History Committee was created in 2006. The establishment of the Russian-Latvian History Committee was fraught with many problems, and the organization was founded only in 2011. Both committees suspended their operations upon the outbreak of the military conflict in Ukraine in 2014, but their activities were revived in 2017. The Russian-Lithuanian committee published two volumes of archival documents (in 2006 and 2013), whereas the Russian-Latvian committee was successful in accessing source documents from Russian archives. The committees stirred considerable controversy and criticism in all three countries. However, historical policy should rely on factual information and reliable research to ensure that historical facts are not manipulated for the needs of state-controlled propaganda.

Straipsnyje gvildenama, kaip kartografija, žemėlapis ir geografinė vaizduotė „sugrįžta“ į pasaulinę geopolitiką ir vis labiau ją lemiančių civilizacijų sąveikos plotmę. Straipsnyje aptariamas Kinijos iškilimas, jos naujoji civilizacinė geopolitika, išskiriant du kartografijos tipus: susijusį su nacionaline valstybe, jos sienomis bei saugumu, ir išorėn nukreiptą kintantį civilizacinių ryšių bei sąveikų žemėlapį. Pastarajame svarbus geopolitinis ir geoekonominis Road and Belt Initiative veiksnys. Aiškinantis galimas geopolitikos slinkčių trajektorijas, gvildenami kai kurie rusiškosios, osmaniškosios ir kiniškosios civilizacinės kartografijos sandaužos aspektai, išryškėjantys Sibire, Kaukaze bei Juodosios jūros regione. Pabrėžiant, kad rusiškoji agresyvi imperinė geopolitika pražūtinga pačiai Rusijai, prieinama prie išvados, jog, tikėtina, įsitvirtina dvipolio pasaulio – Jungtinės Valstijos ir Kinijos – tvarka, nustatanti naują pasaulio saugumo architektūrą ir padedanti išvengti naujų karinių konfliktų. The article explores the “return” of cartography, map and geographical imagination to global geopolitics and the plane of interaction between the civilizations that increasingly determine it. The article discusses the rise of China, its new civilizational geopolitics, distinguishing between two types of cartography - the one related to the nation-state, its borders and security, and the outward-facing shifting map of civilizational connections and interactions. In the latter, the geopolitical and geoeconomic factor of the Road and Belt Initiative is important. Explaining the possible trajectories of geopolitical shifts, some aspects of the clash of Russian, Ottoman and Chinese civilizational cartography in Siberia, the Caucasus, and the Black Sea region are explored. Highlighting the destructiveness of Russian aggressive imperial geopolitics for Russia itself, conclusions are available about the likely creation of a bipolar world order between the United States and China, establishing a new world security architecture and helping to avoid new military conflicts. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas prekių ir žmonių judėjimas tarp Rusijos ir Baltijos šalių (Lietuvos, Latvijos ir Estijos). Straipsnio tikslas – išanalizuoti šių ribų vaidmenį išsiplėtus Europos Sąjungai. Sugriuvus TSRS ir Baltijos šalims įstojus į ES, siena tarp šitų valstybių tapo riba, kuri skiria ES nuo Rusijos. Periferinės ES Baltijos šalys, kaip ir Vakarų Rusija, visada buvo tranzitinės teritorijos, kurioms buvo būdinga didelė žmonių ir prekių cirkuliacija. Baltijos šalys iš esmės ir liko tranzitinės teritorijos prekėms, kurios juda iš ir į posovietines valstybes, jų transporto sistema paremta uostų ir geležinkelių suderinamumu. Ekonominė politika, politiniai sprendimai ir tradiciniai ryšiai leidžia geriau suprasti Rytų Baltijos regioną. Pagrindiniai krovinių srautai Baltijos šalyse juda iš Rusijos, tačiau ne tik – svarbios ir Kaukazo bei Centrinės Azijos valstybės, susijusios su Baltijos šalimis. Regiono tarptautinio keleivių transporto sistema panaši į tradicinę: vyrauja oro transportas, nors išlieka svarbūs ir geležinkeliai bei kelių transportas. Atgavus nepriklausomybę, skrydžių skaičius iš Baltijos šalių nuolatos didėjo: Rygos oro uostas šiuo metu yra didžiausias keleivių vežėjas Baltijos šalyse. Būdingas savitas pasienio mobilumas: smulkiojo verslo arba komercinis turizmas. XXI a. pradžioje jis tapo nuolatinis, išsiplėtus ES sienos kirtimas labiau reguliuojamas. Žmonėms reikia vizų, kurių išdavimas susijęs su administraciniais dokumentais ir išlaidomis, taigi kirsti sieną tapo sudėtingiau. Tam tikrais atvejais, tokiais kaip Kaliningrado sritis ar Narva-Ivangorod miestai, siekiama gerinti padėtį. Taigi vietos lygmenyje siena tampa skiriamąja riba, kuri mažiau pastebima vertinant didesnės apimties ir nuotolių prekybos srautus. Disintegration of the USSR and join of Baltic States to European Union made this one a border territory between Russia and EU. After the collapse of Former Soviet Union, the new boundary remained almost easy to cross. In the beginning of the 21th century, it became no more fuzzy but rather fixed. Since European enlargement that had taken place in 2004, the crossing has become more regulated. People need visas that meant administrative papers and cost. The evolution of cargo flows has been more contrasted. Economic policies, political stakes and traditional links, are elements to understand East Baltic area. Straipsnyje apžvelgiami Lietuvos, Lenkijos ir Rusijos istorikų, dalyvavusių diskusijoje apie Lietuvos katalikus, savanoriškai ar prievarta atsidūrusius Sibire, pranešimai. Virtualaus apskritojo stalo dalyviai nustatė temos šaltinių bazę, apibūdino jos tyrimo laipsnį, apibrėžė tolesnių tyrimų perspektyvas. Kalbant apie šaltinius, pažymėta, kad nemaža dalis jų saugoma Sibiro archyvuose. Tai – atskiri dokumentai ar bylos bažnyčių, perkėlimo komisijų, policijos, žemės matininkų, valsčių administracijų, kaimo draugijų, politinių partijų, švietimo įstaigų, tautinių draugijų, gyventojų surašymo komisijų, religijos reikalų komisarų, tremtinių, repatriantų fonduose. Vertingos medžiagos yra ir centriniuose Lietuvos, Rusijos, Baltarusijos istoriniuose archyvuose, Vatikano ir vienuolijų ordinų archyvuose. Vilniaus mokslinėse bibliotekose galima rasti kelių Sibire tarnavusių lietuvių kunigų rankraščius. Iš publikuotų šaltinių diskusijos dalyviai ypatingą dėmesį skyrė atsiminimų, dokumentų, laikraščių straipsnių leidiniams. Kaip papildomi šaltiniai buvo minimi ir asmeniniai laiškai, nuotraukos, epitafijos. Istoriografijoje apie Sibiro Katalikų Bažnyčią vyrauja bendro ar prolenkiško pobūdžio studijos, kuriose katalikai iš Lietuvos dažniausiai nėra išskiriami kaip atskira kategorija arba visai neminimi. Tyrimų, skirtų būtent Lietuvos katalikams Sibire, yra labai nedaug, tad didelis kiekis šaltinių atveria plačias perspektyvas tyrimams – kolektyviniams, tarptautiniams, tarpdisciplininiams. Tyrimo objektais galėtų būti Lietuvos katalikų kasdienybė, iškilių asmenybių biografijos, kultūrinis ir religinis gyvenimas. Pažymėta, jog labai svarbus yra mokslinis rinktinių šaltinių leidinys. The article reviews the statements of Lithuanian, Polish and Russian historians who took part in the discussion on Lithuanian Catholics who voluntarily or forcibly ended up in Siberia. The participants of the virtual round table identified the source base of the topic, described the degree of its research, and outlined the prospects for further research. As far as the sources are concerned, it was noted that a considerable part of them is stored in the Siberian archives. These include individual documents or files in the fonds of churches, resettlement commissions, police, land surveyors, district administrations, village societies, political parties, educational establishments, national societies, census commissions, religious commissars, exiles and repatriates. Valuable material is also available in the central historical archives of Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, the Vatican and the archives of the monastic orders. The manuscripts of several Lithuanian priests who served in Siberia can be found in Vilnius research libraries. Among the published sources, the participants of the discussion paid special attention to the publication of memoirs, documents and newspaper articles. Personal letters, photographs and epitaphs were also mentioned as additional sources. The historiography on the Siberian Catholic Church is dominated by studies of a general or pro-polish nature, where Catholics from Lithuania are usually not singled out as a separate category or not mentioned at all. Special studies on Lithuanian Catholics are rare. Such a small number of studies and a large number of sources open up great perspectives for research, including collective, international and interdisciplinary. The objects of the research could be the everyday life of Lithuanian Catholics, biographies of prominent personalities, cultural and religious life. It is also noted as a very important and scholarly publication of selected sources. The article includes a critical apparatus and a list of studies on the subject of the remote conference. 1985 m. prasidėjus Michailo Gorbačiovo pertvarkos procesams – „perestroikai“ SSRS, sovietų okupuotose šalyse išaugo neginkluotas pasipriešinimas Sovietų Sąjungos režimui. Nuo 1987 m. Lietuva kartu su kitomis Baltijos šalimis jau aiškiai išreiškė laisvės troškimą ir pradėjo siekti nepriklausomybės, kurią lietuviai pirmieji paskelbė 1990 m. kovo 11 d. Prancūzija pripažino šį žingsnį 1991 m. rugpjūčio 29 d., atkurdama diplomatinius santykius su Lietuva. Remiantis Prancūzijos diplomatiniais archyvais ir papildant spaudos pranešimais, straipsniais ir televizijos reportažais, straipsnyje aprašoma Prancūzijos reakcija į šį lietuvių pasipriešinimą nuo 1987 m. iki abipusių diplomatinių santykių atkūrimo. Šiuo laikotarpiu, kai ypač svarbus Vakarų palaikymas Ukrainai dėl Rusijos agresijos, straipsnyje grįžtama į laikotarpį, kai šio palaikymo tikėjosi Lietuva, nagrinėjama Prancūzijos politinė pozicija Lietuvos atžvilgiu ir veiksmai arba jų nebuvimas lietuviams siekiant nepriklausomybės. Following Mikhail Gorbachev’s “perestroika” in the USSR in 1985, unarmed resistance to the Soviet regime grew in the Soviet occupied countries. From 1987 onwards, Lithuania, together with the other Baltic countries, had already clearly expressed its desire for freedom and started to seek independence from the Soviets, which the Lithuanians were the first to declare on March 11, 1990. France acknowledged this step by re-establishing diplomatic relations with Lithuania on August 29, 1991. This article examines French Policy Towards Lithuania 1987–1991 on the basis of French diplomatic archives and is supplemented by press coverage and news reports to understand the French reaction to this Lithuanian opposition from 1987 until the restoration of mutual diplomatic relations. In this period, when Western support is particularly important for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, the article goes back to the period when this support was expected by Lithuania, and examines the French political stance towards Lithuania and its actions or lack of them in the Lithuanian’s quest for independence. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojami Rusijos disidentų ir viešų Kremliaus kritikų pasisakymai, jų nuostatos bei vertybės. Pasirinktos savo veikla ir nuostatomis skirtingos asmenybės: Vladimiras Bukovskis, Aleksejus Navalnas, Jurijus Dmitrijevas („Memorial“ istorikas), Aleksandras Solženicynas, Gary’is Kasparovas, grupės „Pussy Riot“ narės Nadežda Tolokonikova, Marija Aliochina ir Jekaterina Samucevič, Michailas Chodorkovskis, Aleksandras Nevzorovas, Jakutijos šamanas Gabyševas. Analizuojamas skirtumas tarp klasikinio disidento ir viešųjų ryšių asmens. Atkreipiamas dėmesys į tai, jog sunku kalbėti apie disidentus ta prasme, kokia šis žodis buvo vartojamas Sovietų Sąjungoje. Aptariamas Kremliaus kritikų pavojus tapti politiniais kaliniais ir suintensyvėjusi laisvo žodžio represija. Straipsnio pradžioje apibrėžus, kas yra disidentas, vėliau straipsnyje atskiriamas disidentas nuo viešųjų ryšių asmens, kuris yra Rusijos prezidento Putino autoritarinio režimo kritikas, bet nebūtinai disidentas. Straipsnio pabaigoje sugrupuojami pasirinkti disidentai ir viešieji dabartinio Kremliaus kritikai, atsižvelgiant į jų statusą ir reikalavimus, keliamus siekiant nušalinti Rusijos prezidentą. Prieinama prie išvadų, kad prieštaringumai vertybėse tarp disidentų ir viešųjų Kremliaus kritikų rodo vertybines ir ideologines takoskyras, kurioms esant neverta tikėtis Rusijos supanašėjimo su Europos Sąjungos teisiniais ir politiniais standartais. This article analyses statements, attitudes and values of Russian dissidents and public Kremlin critics. Concrete personalities have been chosen: classic soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovski, journalist Alekseij Navalnij, historian Jurij Dmitrijev, writer Aleksander Solzhenytcin, chess world champion Gary Kasparov, punk rock Pussy riots members Nadezhda Tolokonikova, Marija Aliochina and Jekaterina Samucevič, businessman Michail Chodorkovski, public intellectual and TV actor Aleksander Nevzorov, Yakutia (Siberia) shaman Gabishev. The difference between classic dissidents and public critics of Vladimir Putin‘s regime is analyzed. Attention is given to the fact that today is hard to talk about dissidents in the same sense as it was used to do it in the Soviet Union times. The article includes discussion about the danger of Kremlin‘s critics to become political prisoners and how the regime of Putin today has speeded up repression of freedom of speech. Especially after February 24th, 2022 when Russian army invaded Ukraine. The beginning of the article defines what is a dissident, then later the article provides a distinction between a dissident and public Kremlin‘s critic. The latter, who as a critic of Russian President Putin‘s authoritarian regime, does not necessarily is a dissident. At the end of the article the dissidents and public critics of contemporary Kremlin‘s authoritarian regime are grouped according to their status and demands for Putin to step down from the office. The author concludes that contradictions among values of the dissidents and public Kremlin critics show ideological differences, due to what one should not expect Russia to become like European Union in terms of legal and political standards even if/when the regime changes.

Vakarai, visų pirma Europos Sąjunga ir Jungtinės Amerikos Valstijos, atsiliepdami į Rusijos ir Ukrainos karą (2014–), parodė nepaprastą vienybę ir sanglaudą, remdami Ukrainos, kaip suverenios demokratinės valstybės, teisę ginti savo nepriklausomybę ir teritorinį vientisumą. Vis dėlto ši civilizacinė vienybė Vakaruose gali būti trumpalaikė. Esama svaraus pagrindo kelti hipotezę, kad Europą ir Šiaurės Ameriką skaldo pamatiniai nesutarimai tiek dėl dabartinės žmonijos istorijos būklės, tiek dėl jos ateities raidos, įskaitant tarptautinius politinius mechanizmus, kuriais ta raida turėtų būti įgyvendinama. Jei ši takoskyra nebus laiku suvaldyta, Vakarų civilizacija gali skilti į dvi dalis. Ar galima išsaugoti vieningus Vakarus? The West, primarily the European Union and the United States of America, have shown a remarkable unity and cohesion in their response to the Russo-Ukrainian War (2014–), upholding the right of Ukraine as a sovereign democratic state to defend its independence and territorial integrity. However, this civilizational unity in the West may be short-lived. There are pressing reasons for the hypothesis that Europe and North America are at structural odds concerning the current state and future course of human history, including the international political mechanisms by which that course should be implemented. If this divergence is not managed on a timely basis, it may fracture Western civilization into two. Will the West be preserved? The article argues that it may be preserved by unraveling two paradoxes: one for the European Union and one for the United States. Key words: Western civilization, Europe, America, unity, division.

Simonas Daukantas’s Topography of St Petersburg S u m m a r y Simonas Daukantas spent 15 years (between 1834 and 1850) living in St Petersburg, where he worked as an assistant registrar at the Senate. This article highlights the exact addresses of where Daukantas lived and published books in St Petersburg. The address of the place where Daukantas lived in 1837 is published for the first time; the drawing of the building has been obtained, the landlord identified. Apparently, in 1837 Daukantas lived in the building owned by Marya Nelsen, the wife of chief (regiment) doctor Gavrila Nelsen, at the intersection of Kazanskaya street and Voznesensky prospect (or Voznesensky avenue; the exact address: Voznesensky Ave 15–17/Kazanskaya St 45). The article features the drawing of this building and contains information about its condition, which shows that in late 1830s and in 1840s the building was in an appalling state of repair. Marya Nelsen died in 1840, and the building was assigned to a care agency. Some of the tenants continued to live at the building for some time, only to move out later; apparently, Daukantas was among those who vacated this residence. More details are provided about Daukantas’s place of residence in 1842 (address: Malaya Masterskaya 9, the building near the Church of St Stanislaus), providing the drawing of the building and publishing pictures of how it looks today, revealing the characteristics of the building’s architecture, including those from the time when Daukantas lived there. The building next to St Stanislaus Church at Malaya Masterskaya 9 was built in 1841–1842. In one letter of 1842 Daukantas claimed his residency at this address, so we suggest that he might have moved in right after the completion of construction. The addresses of three printing houses where Daukantas published his books have been identified. On top of that, details of what the buildings looked like during Daukantas’s time there have been obtained. Christian Hintze’s printing house was located at Durygina’s house at Nevsky prospect 8. The building has survived to this date virtually intact. Ivanov’s lithograph based on Sadovnikov’s picture represents the view of the building in 1830s, the approximate time of Daukantas’s book publications at Hintze’s printing house. Later, the enterprise was acquired by Merkushev. The printing house of Karl Kray was located in the corner of Frost’s building at Malaya Morskaya 12/Gorokhovaya 9. Analysis of the archive drawings of the buildings has provided some insights into what the building’s appearance was during Daukantas’s time in St Petersburg. Before 1850, Gretsch’s house (current address: Moika 92; the building was demolished in early 1960s) was home to Eduard Pratz’s printing house. The blueprints of the building that were found in the archives shed a light on what the building looked like in 1840s and 1850s, when Daukantas would publish his books there. Gretsch’s own publishing house was in the same building. The archives contain blueprints of Gretsch’s house on Moika riverfront, showing the appearance of the building at the time of Daukantas’s printing his books there: the façade off Moika, the courtyard, and the plan of the building. Giedrius Subačius has noted that 1841–1845 were the years when Daukantas was the most consistent in his orthography. Βetter living conditions in the new building constructed in 1842 most probably had allowed Daukantas to improve the quality and efficiency of his work. It is also worth noting that the publishing houses were close to the places where Daukantas lived and worked. All these buildings are located in the Admiralteisky district of St Petersburg.

1904 m. Vilnoje buvo pradėtas ambicingas, iki tol neregėtos apimties žurnalistinis ir literatūrinis projektas. Du pagrindiniai jo lyderiai – Ben Avigdoras (Avraham Leib Shalkowitz), siekęs į savo spaudos verslą įtraukti dienraščių leidybą, ir žurnalistas, redaktorius Benzionas Katzas, norėjęs atgaivinti savo laikraštį "Hazman", prieš metus pradėtą leisti Sankt Peterburge. Vilna buvo pasirinkta dėl keleto priežasčių. Po karčios patirties Sankt Peterburge Katzas norėjo šį laikraštį leisti žydų ir hebrajų senųjų kultūros tradicijų aplinkoje, o Ben Avigdoras siekė atsiriboti nuo Varšuvos, jau turinčios du populiarius laikraščius hebrajų kalba. Vilna, buvusi pačiame žydų sėslumo riba apibrėžiamos teritorijos centre, buvo patogi ir logistiškai, planuojant spaudos platinimą. Vilnoje buvo lengviau gauti laikraščio licenciją, švelniau veikė ir Rusijos vyriausybės cenzūra. Be to, buvo galima pasikliauti gerai žinoma Rommų spaustuve, įsipareigojusia spausdinti laikraštį ir du jo priedus – literatūrinį mėnesinį žurnalą ir vaikų savaitinį. Ben Avigdoras sutelkė įspūdingą maždaug dešimties nuolatinių "Hazman" darbuotojų komandą, taip pat turėjo neetatinių, reguliariai su laikraščiu bendradarbiavusių talkininkų. Pirmą kartą nuo žydų Apšvietos sąjūdžio suklestėjimo XIX a. viduryje vėl buvo galima kalbėti apie Vilną, kaip apie svarbų hebrajiško kūrybiškumo centrą su bohemiška jaunųjų rašytojų ir žurnalistų kuriama atmosfera, į kurią su visa jėga 1904 m. gruodį įsiliejo ir "Hazman". Tuo metu Rusija kentėjo nuo suirutės po pralaimėto karo su Japonija ir buvo krečiama vis smarkesnių revoliucinių neramumų. Žydų pasaulyje dienos irgi nebuvo ramios. Sionistų judėjimą po Theodoro Herclio mirties ir po Teritorialistų frakcijos atskilimo buvo ištikusi sunki krizė. Kita vertus, Bundo vadovaujami žydų socialistų būreliai veikė labai aktyviai. "Hazmano" redaktoriai priėmė strateginį sprendimą skaitytojams neprimesti vienos politinės linijos. Nors ir neišsižadėję savo įsipareigojimo karštai remti sionistų judėjimą, jie laikraštį atvėrė visoms žydų visuomenės politinėms grupėms. Didžiausias Katzo žurnalistinis proveržis įvyko tuomet, kai laikraštis pirmasis pasaulyje išspausdino naujos Rusijos Konstitucijos Projektą. Be to, "Hazman" sekė žydų teisių padėtį Rusijoje. Laikraštyje buvo solidus įvairių naujienų skyrius, kurio turinio kokybę užtikrino turėti ryšiai su tarptautinėmis naujienų agentūromis ir vertimai iš kitų Europos šalių spaudos. Literatūrinė dalis buvo antroji "Hazman" laikraščio stiprybė. Dalis kūrinių buvo spausdinami dienraštyje, tačiau dauguma skelbti mėnesiniame žurnale. Čia buvo publikuojami geriausi to meto literatūros kūriniai hebrajų kalba. 1906 m. visi šie darbai sustojo. Taip galėjo nutikti dėl revoliucinių įvykių Rusijoje, po kurių šalį ištiko politinis paralyžius, kilo riaušės ir pogromų banga prieš žydus. Per šiuos politinius neramumus paaiškėjo skaudus faktas, kad hebrajų kalba leidžiamas laikraštis žydų skaitytojui tapo nepatrauklus. Sparčiai augo susidomėjimas, ypač socialistų sluoksniuose, spauda jidiš kalba. Radosi naujo tipo jaunas žydų skaitytojas, kuriam jidiš kalba buvo jo tapatybės atrama, be to, savo estetines reikmes jis galėjo patenkinti skaitydamas ir kitomis Europos kalbomis. Tradicinė hebrajiškai skaitanti auditorija pamažu mažėjo prarasdama ryšį su nuolatinės hebrajiškojo modernizmo kaitos procesais. "Hazman" atvejis – dramatiškų pokyčių pavyzdys, aiškiai žymintis literatūros hebrajų kalba nuosmukio Rytų Europoje pradžią ir sykiu klojantis pamatus hebrajiškai literatūrai Izraelio žemėje. In 1904, a Hebrew journalistic and literary initiative was established in Vilna, headed by the writer and publisher Ben-Avigdor, and the journalist and editor Ben Zion Katz. Vilna was chosen, among other reasons, for being a deeply rooted centre of Hebrew culture, with a long tradition of printing and publishing. The new initiative revived it as a magnet for Hebrew writers and journalists, an impressive team that joined together to create the daily "Hazman" (The Time) and its supplements. The editors’ policy was not to impose a binding political line on the paper, but to give an opening to all the factions in the Jewish public, while also hoping to expand the target audience of the paper. The year 1905 was the time of glory of "Hazman", both for its news and its literary sections. But its momentum was halted during 1906, due to the political storm in Russia and the rapid decline of Hebrew journals, which lost most of their readership to the flourishing Yiddish press. Thus, the "Hazman" affair embodies a dramatic crossroads. It was the beginning of the decline of Hebrew literature in Eastern Europe, alongside the laying of the foundations for Hebrew literature in the Land of Israel during the first two decades of the 20th century. This essay draws an outline of the affair on the basis of a variety of sources, including the newspaper itself, memories of the personalities involved, and correspondence that has survived from those days.

Nuo XIX a. vidurio iki XX a. tarpukario pabaigos buvo išleista įvairių leidinių apie Vilnių, skirtų tiek turistams, tiek iš namų kojos nekeliantiems kelionių mėgėjams. Šiame straipsnyje aptariamus kelionių vadovus lenkų, prancūzų ir vokiečių kalbomis parašė ir vilniečiai, ir miesto svečiai, norėję pasidalyti įspūdžiais apie miestą, jo įžymybes ir gyventojus. 1939 m. išėjęs visa apimantis Zalmeno Šyko vadovas "Toyznt yor Vilne" („Tūkstantis Vilniaus metų“) išaukštino žydų tautinei mažumai reikšmingas miesto vietas, drauge parodydamas ir jo įvairovę, kuri liberalių pažiūrų žmonėms reiškė geriausią Vilnos paveldo dalį. Straipsnyje aptariami ir kiti panašaus pobūdžio kelionių vadovai: nuo paties ankstyviausio, 1856 m. išleisto Adamo H. Kirkoro, iki chronologiškai Šyko leidiniui artimiausio Tadeuszo Łopalewskio 1938 m. kelionių gido ir daugelio autorių sudaryto leidinio "Wilno i Ziemia Wileńska" (1930–1937). Pažymėtina, kad kai kurie autoriai, pavyzdžiui, Henrykas Mościckis savo vadove (1922) ir atlaso Wilno i Ziemia Wileńska (1931) tome, Vilniuje gyvenusių žydų apskritai neminėjo. Kiti, kaip antai Władysławas Zahorskis (1910) ir Rosa Bailly (1923), apie žydus tik užsiminė. Žinoma, toks požiūris galėjo būti nulemtas politinių aplinkybių, kai faktas, kad Vilniuje gyvuoja žydų bendruomenė, tiesiog ignoruotas. Buvo ir kur kas atviriau savo pažiūras reiškiančių autorių. Paskutiniais Rusijos carinės imperijos valdymo metais rašytame ir 1910 m. išleistame Wacławo Gizberto miesto vadove aiškiai matyti autoriaus priešiškumas Vilnių valdžiusiems rusams. O štai po Pirmojo pasaulinio karo išėjusiame vadove (1923) ryškus jo autoriaus Juliuszo Kłoso noras pavaizduoti Vilnių kaip neatsiejamą Antrosios Lenkijos Respublikos dalį. Šių rašytojų požiūris į Vilniaus žydų bendruomenę atspindėjo jų ištikimybę savajai lenkų tautai. 1929 m. Vilnių aplankiusi prancūzų pacifistė ir feministė Camille Drevet, regis, taip pat pajuto palengvėjimą, kad žydų bendruomenė čia nesiekia politinio vyravimo. Žydiškojo Vilniaus lankytinas vietas aprašantys autoriai daugiausia dėmesio skyrė vadinamajam getui – tradiciniam žydų gyvenimo centrui. Jie žavėjosi jo mielais užkaboriais ir gyva prekyba, bet bjaurėjosi skurdu ir nešvara. Beveik visi autoriai žydų kvartalą vaizdavo kaip išskirtinę miesto kraštovaizdžio dalį, tačiau, pradedant XX a. trečiuoju dešimtmečiu, Kirkorui būdingą šios miesto dalies palankų aprašymą keitė vis labiau reiškiamas pasibjaurėjimas. Žydų kvartalas vaizduotas kaip egzotiška vieta, visiškai nederanti su Vilniaus, kaip šiuolaikinio Europos miesto, tapatybe, panašiai, kaip ir žydai laikyti svetimais lenkų didžiumos gyvenamame mieste. Daugelis rašiusiųjų apie Vilniaus žydų kvartalą rėmėsi orientalizmo prieiga, tačiau rinkosi skirtingus tokio sugretinimo aspektus. 1934 m. rašiusiems Kłosui ir Jerzy Remeriui tai reiškė žydų, kaip iš Rytų kilusios tautos, svetimumą, o Drevet ir Łopalewskiui getas atrodė kaip žavi įdomybė. From the mid-19th century through the end of the interwar period, a variety of texts about Vilna were published to guide and inform both tourists and armchair travellers. The Polish, French and Germanlanguage guidebooks and travelogues considered in this article were composed both by native sons and visitors who wished to share their impressions of the city, its notable sights, and its residents. While some overlooked the presence of Jews, most devoted some space to Vilna’s Jewish landmarks. Overwhelmingly, they focused their attention on the Jewish quarter, the traditional heart of Jewish life, although a minority ventured to newer neighbourhoods, where they discovered a vibrant modern community. Their attitudes included a mix of sympathy, fascination and revulsion; many employed the language of orientalism, even as they invested that language with a variety of meanings. These authors’ narratives were shaped by their views of the various groups that comprised Vilna’s diverse population, as well as by commitments ranging from Polish nationalism to pacifism. Such accounts thus illuminate competing visions of the larger society and the place of Jews within it.

Pirmasis pasaulinis karas buvo labai reikšmingas Vilniui. Prieš karą buvęs Rusijos imperijos provincijos miestu, po 1920 m., nepaisant Lietuvos protestų, Vilnius buvo inkorporuotas į Lenkijos Respubliką. Straipsnyje apžvelgiami svarbiausi 1914–1918 m. įvykiai mieste, daugiausia remiantis dviem šaltiniais: daug vėliau jidiš kalba parašytais Vilniaus gyventojo žydo Hiršos Abramovičiaus atsiminimais (1999) ir per karą keliais leidimais išėjusiu vokiečių kareiviams skirtu Paulo Monty vadovu po Vilnių. Skirtingos šių šaltinių perspektyvos atskleidžia, kad kiekviena tautinė grupė miesto erdvę suvokė itin savitai. Abramovičiaus atsiminimuose Vilnius iškyla kaip vieta, kur žydai, lenkai ir kitų tautybių atstovai gebėjo palyginti gerai sutarti ir kartu darbuotis. Rašytojui žydai buvo ne tik neatskiriama vilniečių, bet ir pačios miesto tapatybės dalis. Tačiau net šis išsilavinęs, plačių pažiūrų memuaristas kandžiai pažymi, kad jo paties viltys ir lūkesčiai dėl tarpetninio bendradarbiavimo ne visada atspindi platesnį daugumos gyventojų, ypač lenkų, supratimą. Monty kelionių gidas parašytas turint visiškai kitokį tikslą – juo siekta vokiečių kareiviams pristatyti „rytietišką“, „egzotišką“ miestą. Šiame unikaliame leidinyje orientalizuotas kalbėjimo būdas ir globėjiškas požiūris į Vilnių dera su autoriui būdingu akivaizdžiu susidomėjimu ir žavėjimusi šiuo miestu. The outbreak of war in August 1914 marked a new era in the history of Vilna for all of the city’s inhabitants, but perhaps for the Jews most of all. The world war accelerated the processes of political and economic modernisation, to the detriment of local Jews. These processes were not, however, immediately evident to local residents, though the more far-seeing among them feared for the worst. After all, when had Jews gained from military action? In this short paper, I will give an overview of the impact of the First World War on Vilna, and highlight two specific, very different, sources: Paul Monty’s Wanderstunden in Vilna, a guidebook for German soldiers, and Hirsz Abramowicz’s Profiles of a Lost World, a memoir published later (in Yiddish) by a long-time Vilna resident.

Straipsnyje atskleidžiamas Kauno Švč. Trejybės bernardinių gyvenimas 1842–1864 m., dėl Rusijos okupacinės valdžios politikos blogėjanti vienuolyno situacija, vienuolyno uždarymo procesas, nušviečiami vienuolių likimai po jo likvidavimo. Tyrimas atliktas pasinaudojant bernardinių susirašinėjimo su Žemaičių (Telšių) vyskupu Motiejumi Valančiumi ir vienuolynų vizitatoriumi Marcijonu Giedraičiu, M. Valančiaus atsiminimų, bernardinių vizitacijų medžiaga. Šis Kauno bernardinių atvejo tyrimas padeda geriau suvokti, kokia buvo Rusijos carinėje imperioje atsidūrusios Katalikų bažnyčios vienuolynų padėtis. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad 1842 m. praradus fundacines valdas, iš valstybės iždo skiriamos pensijos nepakako, vienuolės bandė gauti giminaičių ar kitų pasaulietinių asmenų materialinę paramą. 1850 m. buvo uždarytas Kauno šv. Jurgio bernardinų konventas, ligi tol globojęs vienuoles. Nors bernardinai liko gyventi prie bernardinių kaip kapelionai, tačiau, susidūrę su nepritekliais, nepastebėjo ar nenorėjo pastebėti bernardinių vienuolyną kamavusių problemų. Žemaičų vyskupas M. Valančius tapo pagrindiniu bernardinių globėju. Jis teisinosi gyvenęs toli nuo Kauno, Varniuose, neturėjęs galimybių iš arti stebėti vienuolių gyvenimo. Problemų kilo dėl vienuolyno komplektacijos. Komplikavosi noviciato veikla, į bernardinių bendruomenėje atsiradusias laisvas vietas paprastai buvo perkeliamos senyvo amžiaus vienuolės iš kitų vienuolynų. Įvairios problemos darė įtaką bernardinių tarpusavio santykiams, skatino pažeidinėti konstituciją, nesilaikyti klauzūros, ignoruoti neturtą, plėtoti individualumą. Ištuštėjo bendruomeninio gyvenimo centras – refektorijus, bernardinės turėjo atskiras virtuves, po klauzūrinę teritoriją vaikščiojo pašaliniai asmenys, vienuolių giminaitės ar draugės. Taisydama bendruomenės negeroves, itin daug nuveikė vienuolyno vyresnioji Rožė Gružauskaitė. Nepaisant jos pastangų, 1864 m. Kauno bernardinių vienuolynas buvo uždarytas, tuo metu ten gyvenusios bernardinės (iš viso 21) buvo išskirstytos po Kauno ir Kražių benediktinių, Krakių kotryniečių vienuolynus. Paskutinė Kauno bernardinė mirė Krakėse 1914 m. Šitaip pasibaigė Kauno bernardinių istorija, po vienuolyno uždarymo 1864 m. iki paskutinės vienuolės mirties užtrukusi dar 50 metų. This article reveals the life of the Holy Trinity Bernardine nuns in Kaunas (Kowno) in the years 1842 to 1864, the worsening situation at the convent due to the Russian occupying government’s policy, the actual closure of the convent, and the fate of the nuns after the closure of their home. The study aims to show how daily life at the convent affected the Russian administration’s decisions regarding its material provision and particular nuns living there, how they were affected by the closure of St George’s Bernardine Friary in Kaunas which used to be the main supporter of the Bernardine nuns, and relations between the Bernardine nuns and the bishop. The author analyses difficulties in community life and problems adhering to the constitution, and reveals the general mood of the nuns. The research is based on correspondence between the Bernardine nuns, the bishop and the convent visitator, memoirs, and material from visitations. This case study of the Kaunas Bernardine nuns helps us gain a better understanding of the situation of the Catholic Church in the Russian Empire.

Napoleono karų atminimo kultūros istoriografijoje nemažai dėmesio skiriama 1812 m. Prancūzijos–Rusijos karo atminties kultūros problemoms. Tačiau Lietuvos atvejis atskirai nėra nagrinėtas. Šio straipsnio tikslas – išanalizuoti, kaip 1812 m. karo vertinimai Lietuvoje buvo palaikomi ir evoliucionavo istorinėje atmintyje. Rusijos valdžia buvusios LDK žemių gyventojams siūlė oficialią 1812 m. karo istorinės atminties versiją (didvyriškos kovos su užkariautoju), kuri prieštaravo vietinei ,,savajai“, liudijančiai patirtis, susijusias su parama Napoleonui ir naujomis krašto politinėmis bei socialinėmis perspektyvomis. Rašytinės literatūros cenzūros siekis slopinti vietinės istorinės atminties sklaidą nebuvo veiksmingas dėl gyventojų itin menkų galimybių naudotis spausdintu žodžiu. XIX a. pirmoje pusėje krašte dominavo komunikacinė atmintis, kuri tapo atraminiu šaltiniu, liudijančiu ir perduodančiu naujoms kartoms 1812 m. karo tikrąsias daugialypes patirtis, tarp jų – galimybes išsilaisvinti iš Rusijos imperijos. XIX a. antroje pusėje Rusijos imperijos vietinės valdžios struktūrų atstovai, vietinė rusų inteligentija, atsižvelgdama į 1812 m. karo, kaip lenkų kovos už laisvę, politinį savarankiškumą, simbolį, akademinėje, mokomojoje ir populiariojoje literatūroje aiškino, kad lenkų viltys, sietos su Napoleonu, buvo nepagrįstos: Prancūzijos imperatorius neturėjo tikslų atkurti buvusią Abiejų Tautų Respubliką istorinėse ribose, jis siekė vien papildyti lenkais savo kariuomenės dalinius. Buvo pabrėžiama, kad lenkų reikštas Napoleono palaikymas sustabdė Rusijos imperijos valdžios galimus planus atkurti buvusį lenkų valstybingumą. Šis vadinamasis regioninis pasakojimas, kuris buvo skelbiamas istorijos vadovėliuose, naudotas emocinio ir vizualaus poveikio priemonėse siekiant paveikti jaunosios kartos politines ir kultūrines nuostatas, turėjo dvejopus tikslus. Pirma, pateisinti vykdomą diskriminacinę politiką prieš „lenkų kilmės“ asmenis. Antra, „užkirsti kelią“ naudoti 1812 m. karą kaip istorinį argumentą, bylojantį ne vien apie bendrą lenkų ir lietuvių istorinę praeitį ir kovą, bet ir galimą politinę ateitį, kuris viešai reikštas XX a. pradžios lenkų tautiniame diskurse. Per šimtą metų lenkai, nepaisydami valdžios veiksmų, sugebėjo išlaikyti „savąją“ istorinę 1812 m. karo atmintį, kurios reikšmės buvo medijuojamos grožinėje literatūroje, muziejų ekspozicijose, istorijos vadovėliuose, naudotos formuojant jaunosios kartos politines ir kultūrines nuostatas. O lietuvių tautiniame diskurse 1812 m. karas, kaip ir 1830–1831 m. bei 1863–1864 m. sukilimai, vertintas kaip lenkų ir sulenkėjusių bajorų reikalas, svetima istorinės atminties vieta. 1812 m. karo, jo galimos svarbos lietuviams vertinimai XX a. pradžios lietuvių tautiniame diskurse buvo pavieniai, fragmentuoti, o jų sklaida platesniems visuomenės sluoksniams menka. In historiography, significant attention to the memory culture of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe focuses on issues relating to the memory culture of the Franco-Russian War of 1812; however, the case of Lithuania is not commonly analysed separately, thus this article discusses how assessments of the 1812 war were maintained in the historical memory in Lithuania. The Russian government offered the population in the lands of the former GDL its official version of the historical memory of the 1812 war (of a heroic battle against an invader), which contradicted the version this population considered as ‘its own’, experienced as their support for Napoleon and the new political and social prospects they believed he would bring. The Russian government’s censorship of written literature suppressed the spread of the people’s ‘own’ local historical memory, yet it did not prove to be so effective due to the population’s very limited opportunities to use the printed word. Communicative memory dominated in the land in the first half of the 19th century, becoming the main source testifying to and passing on to subsequent generations the actual multifaceted experiences of the 1812 war, including the chance of liberation from the yoke of the Russian Empire. In the second half of the 19th century, representatives of local Russian imperial government structures and the local Russian intelligentsia, responding to the 1812 war as a Polish struggle for freedom and a symbol of political independence, explained in academic, educational and popular literature that the hopes of the Poles related to Napoleon were actually unfounded: the French emperor had no intentions of restoring the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth within its historical boundaries, but simply wanted to fill his army units with Polish forces. It was highlighted that this expression of Polish support for Napoleon stopped the Russian imperial government’s potential plans to restore the Poles’ former statehood. This so-called regional narrative which appeared in history textbooks and was used by exacting emotional and visual impact in order to influence the political and cultural provisions of the younger generation had a dual purpose. First, to justify the discriminatory policies against individuals of ‘Polish origins’. Second, to ‘block’ the path for using the 1812 war as a historical argument testifying not just to the common historical past and struggle of Poles and Lithuanians but also their possible political future, which was openly expressed in the Polish national discourse of the early 20th century. Over the course of a hundred years, despite the government’s actions, Poles managed to uphold ‘their own’ historical memory about the 1812 war; its meanings were spread in various forms of media such as fictional literature, museum exhibitions and history textbooks, and were used to shape the political and cultural position of the younger generation. In the Lithuanian national discourse on the other hand, the 1812 war, along with the 1830–1831 and 1863–1864 uprisings, was viewed as a matter concerning the Poles and the Polonised nobility, and it was thus a foreign place of historical memory. The 1812 war and assessments of its potential importance to Lithuanians in the Lithuanian national discourse of the early 20th century were one-off cases and fragmented, while their spread among broader layers of society was limited.

The current paper analyses the background of the relationship of the Baltic States and Poland with Belarus. The Baltic states together with Poland were advocating a decided foreign policy towards the political system of Alyaksandr Lukashenka in the last fifteen years, which applied through the financial support of political opposition, the support of NGO-s and media outlets, attraction of Belarusian students and qualified workforce and firm political actions. This policy culminated during the latest political crisis, following the presidential elections of August 2020. This paper analyses the historic roots behind the respected countries’ relationship, important domestic factors influencing the decision making, dynamics of migration in the recent years, the geopolitical ambitions of Poland and the strategic factors, perceiving Belarus a security threat for the region.

Lietuvos konsulatas Petrograde 1921–1923 m. lietuvių istoriografijoje buvo tirtas gilinantis į Lietuvos konsulatų Sovietų Rusijoje steigimą 1921 m. ir į a. i. konsulo Stasio Zaskevičiaus paskyrimą ir veiklą 1922 m. antroje pusėje – 1923 metais. Neištirtas liko Jono Matuko vadovavimo konsulatui laikotarpis, jo paskyrimas ir veikla, konsulato ištakos ir veikla 1922 metais. Tyrimo tikslas – remiantis šaltiniais ir istoriografija rekonstruoti Lietuvos konsulato Petrograde įsteigimo ir funkcionavimo procesą 1921–1923 m., ypatingą dėmesį skiriant gyvenimo sąlygų ir veiklos specifikai. Tyrimas atliktas remiantis nepublikuotais – Vokietijos reicho URM Politikos archyve, Lietuvos centriniame valstybės archyve URM fonde, Lietuvos Mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių bibliotekos rankraščių skyriuje esančiais ir publikuotais šaltiniais – dokumentais, spauda, lietuvių (Tomo Balkelio, Milenos Tamošiūnienės) bei užsienio (Aleksander Wasilewski, Winfried Baumgart) autorių darbais. Tyrimas atliktas naudojant kokybinės analizės, sintezės (nauja šaltinių medžiaga papildyta cirkuliuojančia istoriografijoje informacija), lyginamąjį istorinį (lietuvių spaudoje paskelbta informacija lyginama su Lietuvos centriniame valstybės archyve esančia), aprašomąjį metodus. Apdorojant pirminius šaltinius, lietuvių, vokiečių, rusų kalbomis, taikytas loginis-analitinis metodas (atlikta turinio ir informacijos prasminė analizė). Tyrimo metu konstatuota, kad Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metu Petrogradas, jame įsteigus susirašinėjimo biurus, tapo abiejose fronto pusėse esančių lietuvių komunikacijos centru, o pasirašius Brest Litovsko sutartį ir Vokietijai pripažinus Lietuvos nepriklausomybę, – lietuvių tremtinių ir pabėgėlių grąžinimo centru. 1921 m. Petrograde įsteigtoje Lietuvos konsulinėje įstaigoje dirbo per trisdešimt tarnautojų, padėjusių lietuviams ir Lietuvos piliečiams tremtiniams bei pabėgėliams grįžti į atkurtą Lietuvos valstybę, teikė pagalbą maistu ir drabužiais per Lietuvos Raudonąjį Kryžių iki 1923 m. rugsėjo 30 d. The Lithuanian Consulate in Petrograd in the years 1921–1923 has been studied in Lithuanian historiography by focusing on the establishment of Lithuanian consulates in Soviet Russia in 1921 and the appointment and activities of Stasys Zaskevičius as Consul ad Interim from the second half of 1922 through 1923. The period when the consulate was led by Jonas Matukas, his appointment and activities, the origins of the consulate and its operation in 1922 have not been investigated at all. Therefore, based on the sources and historiography, the aim of the research is to reconstruct the process of the establishment and functioning of the Lithuanian Consulate in Petrograd from 1921 to 1923 with a special focus on the specificities of the living conditions and activities. The research is based on unpublished sources from the Political Archive of the German Federal Foreign Office, the Collection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs kept at the Lithuanian Central State Archives, the Manuscripts Department of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and published sources, namely documents, periodicals and studies by Lithuanian (Tomas Balkelis, Milena Tamošiūnienė) and foreign (Aleksander Wasilewski, Winfried Baumgart) authors. Methods of qualitative analysis and synthesis (the new material of the sources was supplemented with the information circulating in historiography), the comparative method (the information published in the Lithuanian press was compared with the information found in the Lithuanian Central State Archives), and the descriptive method were applied in this research. To process the primary sources in Lithuanian, German, and Russian languages, the logical-analytical method was applied (the notional content and information analysis was conducted). The research led to the conclusion that due to the correspondence bureaus established in Petrograd during World War I, the city became the centre of communication between Lithuanians on both sides of the front. After the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed and Germany recognised Lithuania’s independence, Petrograd became the centre of repatriation of Lithuanian deportees and refugees. The Lithuanian consular institution established in Petrograd in 1921 employed over thirty members of staff who helped the deportees and refugees of Lithuanian nationality and citizenship to return to the restored state of Lithuania and provided assistance in the form of food and clothes through the Lithuanian Red Cross until 30 September 1923. 2015‒2020 metais Lietuvos ginkluotosioms pajėgoms skirtos išlaidos padidėjo dvigubai, ir tai padėjo inicijuoti svarbių kritinių projektų, leidusių Lietuvos kariuomenei modernizuoti ginkluotę ir patobulinti taktiką, įgyvendinimą. Naujos savaeigės haubicos, pėstininkų kovos mašinos, oro gynybos sistemos, prieštankiniai ginklai, radarai, priešdroninės sistemos sustiprino Lietuvos kariuomenės pajėgumus. Naudojamos taktikos prieš „žaliuosius žmogeliukus“ pasikeitė į konvencines taktikas, kur ugnis ir manevras tapo esminiu faktoriumi. Tuo pat metu Kaliningrado srityje Rusijos armija padidino savo karių personalą, modernizavo įvairią ginkluotę į puolamąją bei padidino vykdomų karinių pratybų skaičių. Lietuvos ginkluotosios pajėgos, siekdamos pasiruošti galimoms konvencinėms grėsmėms, privalo decentralizuoti ginkluotės ir amunicijos centrinį arsenalą, kad visi batalionai bet kuriuo metu galėtų panaudoti turimus resursus. Be to, Lietuvos kariuomenės pajėgumai padidėtų, jeigu dalis privalomąją karo tarnybą atlikti kviečiamų jaunuolių tarnautų kibernetiniais šauktiniais ir jeigu būtų naudojamos nekonvencinės taktikos. Tai suteiktų papildomų galimybių Lietuvai, kaip mažai valstybei, kovoti prieš technologiškai pažangų priešininką. Galiausiai, iš papildomo finansavimo Lietuvos kariuomenė privalo siekti įsigyti raketinių salvinės ugnies sistemų ir mobilių priešlaivinių raketų sistemų, kurios galėtų naikinti priešininką iš saugesnio atstumo. In a period of 2015-2020, Lithuanian Armed Forces (LAF) military spending increased twice, thus it enabled to initiate and to arrange significant critical projects that eventually allowed armed forces to upgrade military equipment and tactics. New artillery units, armoured personnel vehicles, air defence systems, anti-tank weapons, radars, anti-drone systems boosted military power of LAF. Tactics switched from anti green men to conventional tactics, where fire and manoeuvre dominates again. Meanwhile, in the same period of time in Kaliningrad the Russian armed forces boosted the number of military personnel, upgraded equipment (most of it to offensive one) and increased military exercises. In order to be prepared, LAF must look for the most efficient ways of defence towards a potential foe. In a near future LAF must decentralize a central military storage thus critical assets could be secured and used by battalions at any time. Moreover, LAF capabilities could be improved by cyber conscripts and non-conventional tactics which could bring extra dividends when a small state fights against technologically advanced adversary. Eventually, with an additional military spending LAF could obtain MLRS artillery, the coastal defence systems and unmanned combat aerial vehicles that could deal with enemy from a safer distance.

The subject of this article thesis is Polish-Russian diplomatic relations in the early years of the reign of Wladislaw IV Vasa (1632–1635). The thesis focuses on the diplomatic activities conducted between the two countries during the Smolensk war in the years 1632–1634 and immediately after the end of the war. A particularly important issue is the Polish and Russian envoys exchanged in order to ratify peace of Polyanovka. Tematem artykułu są polsko-rosyjskie stosunki dyplomatyczne w pierwszych latach panowania Władysława IV Wazy (1632–1635). Praca koncentruje się na aktywności dyplomatycznej prowadzonej między obu krajami podczas wojny smoleńskiej w latach 1632–1634 i tuż po jej zakończeniu. Szczególnie ważny wątek stanowią wzajemne poselstwa odbywane w celu ratyfikacji pokoju polanowskiego.

This article analyses the concept of official misconduct by the Roman Catholic clergy in the sphere of the civil authorities in the so-called Northwest Region (which comprised the dioceses of Vilnius and Samogitia [Telšiai]) in the decades from the Uprising of 1863–1864 to the beginning of the 20th century. It also dwells on the legal situation of Catholic clergymen and the practice of their punishment that developed after the Uprising of 1863–1864. The inquiry into official misconduct by clergymen was aimed at characterising the government’s policy towards the Roman Catholic clergy, and its understanding of what and how members of the Roman Catholic clergy had to behave as part of their duties. The way official misconduct was punished suggests not only the civil authorities’ attitude towards the clergy, but also the clergymen’s social standing in the society of those times and the attitude towards their duties. The functions of the clergyman were set forth in a number of legal acts of the Empire, and quite a few of them also defined sanctions for misconduct. They could be imposed by both the civil and the Church authorities. The Uprising of 1863–1864 had a strong impact (in the sense of strengthening control and repressions) on the attitude of the civil authorities towards the Catholic Church, and therefore its clergy. It was accused of disloyalty to the empire, and was even considered as its enemy. Consequently, the civil authorities discerned inappropriate behaviour in the behaviour of the Roman Catholic clergy, and therefore imposed sanctions. During and after the uprising, in addition to the legal norms regulating the conduct of the clergy that were already in place, special measures introduced as part of the state of emergency were applied to clergymen, thus framing the procedure and practice of administrative penalties. The punishment included, but was not limited to, coming before a court. There were also administrative penalties, such as fines, transfers to another place of service, suspension, cloistering and exile. These punishments remained in force until 1905. By viewing the clergymen’s behaviour as political, the civil government sought to control and punish actions that were part of their direct duties but from the point of view of the authorities implied disloyalty to the Empire. The civil authorities were eager to control as many aspects of the clergymen’s service as possible, whereas governors and governors-general recorded and penalised instances of clerical misconduct that were not provided for in circulars from central or local government regulating the imposition of administrative penalties. The approach towards clergymen’s official misconduct and the punishment for it was subject to judgement, with clear preconditions for the interpretation and the subjective estimation of both the offence and the offender. An analysis of the practice of punishment revealed that it was modified as the governors-general of Vilnius changed. This indicates the lack of a common strategy between the central and the local authorities, and gaps in the assessment of the service of the Roman Catholic clergy.

The concept of ‘sharp power’ has recently emerged as a reaction to the assertiveness of authoritarian regimes. It serves to underline the complexity of challenges which are posed by authoritarian regimes, referring to diverse front lines in the overall ‘battle’, be they culture, education, or the media. The latter, according to Dmitri Trenin, “has become such a crowded battlefield”. This paper attempts to fill in the information gap regarding Russia’s ‘sharp power’ manifestations in Lithuania’s mass media and focuses on NATO related messages in particular. The paper presupposes that messages which evoke an air of support for Russia’s foreign and security policy tend to pass through to Lithuania’s mass media, and argues that, as a result of the insufficient activity by Lithuania’s mass media in terms of forming an independent perception of Russia vis-à-vis NATO, the preconditions for possible manifestations of Russia’s use of sharp power are therefore created. The article is organised into four parts. The first section sets out a theoretical framework for the analysis which focuses on the concept of sharp power. Then the research methodology is outlined. The third section presents features of the informational environment of Lithuania in 2016 and 2019. The final, and most elaborated, section investigates messages which apparently serve to support Russia’s foreign and security policy in terms of the NATO‘s topic in Lithuania’s mass media based on the aforementioned criteria.

Poland’s eastern policy focused on three interrelated issues: Polish-German reconciliation; the recognition of the first declaration of independence of the Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania and their new borders, with emphasis on the strategic importance of these declarations for Polish sovereignty; and the attempts to establish strong relations with these countries. One of the goals of Poland’s eastern policy was to establish a free and democratic Poland in a democratic and peaceful Europe, and these efforts paved the way to reconciliation with Germany and Poland’s admission to the NATO and the European Union. Poland’s eastern policy before and after Poland’s accession to the EU was shaped by several factors. Firstly, Poland had to fulfil the requirements for EU membership, whereas the EU had to meet Poland’s demands. Secondly, Poland had made several attempts to initiate institutional changesin the EU before it became an EU Member State. Thirdly, Poland’s eastern policy was influenced by the Ukrainian political crisis of 2004 and its outcome, in particular Polish involvement in the Orange Revolution (2004) in the Ukraine. According to most Polish observers, the EU’s involvement in the Ukrainian crisis testified to the absence of a cohesive eastern policy in the EU.

Litwa, Łotwa i Estonia są jedynymi państwami wchodzącymi w skład byłego ZSRR, które współcześnie przynależą zarówno do Unii Europejskiej, jak i do Sojuszu Północnoatlantyckiego, przez co zajmują specjalne miejsce na mapie interesów swoich wschodnich sąsiadów. Praca ma na celu wykazać, że wojna informacyjnawymierzona w państwa bałtyckie jest elementem i przejawem szerszej strategii Federacji Rosyjskiej, wykraczającej daleko poza wspomniany region. Na podstawie analizy kilkuset przekazów medialnych z lat 2016–2020, wyciągnięto wnioski na temat ostatnich trendów i metod prowadzenia kampanii dezinformacyjnych, jak i przedstawiono główne narracje na płaszczyźnie wspólnotowej, politycznej, społecznej, historycznej i gospodarczej.

Lietuviškos spaudos, kaip ypatingos svarbos lietuvių diasporos narių tarpusavio komunikavimo reiškinio, ištakos siekia XIX a. Kitakalbės lietuvių išeivijos spaudos radimuisi ir vystymuisi svarbiais laikytini su Lietuvos politine situacija – okupacijomis ir šalies nepriklausomybės įtvirtinimu susiję įvykiai: XX a. pradžia, kai pastebimi pirmieji bandymai supažindinti amerikiečius su lietuvių tautos padėtimi Rusijos imperijoje ir taip formuoti viešąją nuomonę siekiant prisidėti prie šalies tautinio atgimimo ir išsivadavimo judėjimo, taip pat XX a. vidurio politiniai įvykiai, skatinę emigracijoje esančius lietuvius telktis atkurti okupuotos valstybės nepriklausomybę. Iš viso gausaus XX a. antrosios pusės lietuvių išeivijos spaudos masyvo, kurio didžioji dalis buvo publikuojama JAV, išskirtinas kultūrinės anglakalbės spaudos korpusas. Tai – leidyklos Manyland books, Lithuanian Library Press bei žurnalas Lituanus. Be jų, dar minėtinos Lituanistikos tyrimo ir studijų centro, Lietuvių enciklopedijos, kitų leidėjų iniciatyvos. Visus juos vienijantis bruožas buvo tautinio tapatumo modelio, paremto valstybę, bendruomenę, jos narius, bendras vertybes ir tradicijas aprašančių elementų raiška. Istorinis naratyvas visų jų leidyboje atsispindėjo kaip vienas svarbiausių, esmingai lemiančių tautinės savasties reprezentavimą. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama, kaip skirtingos leidybos organizacijos, išnaudodamos žanrinę tekstų įvairovę, platų teminį istorijos spektrą, kūrė tapatybinį individo ir šalies konstruktą. The origins of the Lithuanian press as an especially important means of communication among the members of the Lithuanian diaspora date back to the 19th century. Historical events related to Lithuania’s political situation, i.e., occupations and the establishment and consolidation of the country’s independence, played a significant role in the formation and development of the Lithuanian press in a foreign language. The first attempts to familiarize Americans with the situation of Lithuania and its people in the Russian Empire, and therefore to shape public opinion in order to contribute to the homeland’s national revival and liberation movement, took place in the early 20th century. The political events of the mid-20th century encouraged Lithuanian immigrants to rally their support for the restoration of the independence of the state. The English-language cultural press, most of which was published in the USA, constitute the majority of the second half of the 20th century Lithuanian diaspora press body. These include the publications by the publishing houses, Manyland Books and Lithuanian Library Press, and a quarterly journal, Lituanus. The initiatives by the Lithuanian Research and Studies Center, Lithuanian Encyclopedia and other publishers are also worth of mentioning. National identity based on the state, community and its members, and common values and traditions, was the unifying feature of the English-language Lithuanian cultural press. The historical narrative, as one of the most important and decisive representations of national identity, stood out in all publications. This article examines how different publishers, using genre diversity of texts and a broad spectrum of historic topics, were able to create an identity construct of the individual and the country. The article also looks into the general features of content dissemination in the USA, Western Europe and Australia.

Straipsnyje analizuojama tyrimo dalis, vykdant projektą „Strateginės jaunimo politikos ir tarptautinio bendradarbiavimo stiprinimas“ (akronimas – CaSYPoT, Nr. STHB.05.01.00-SE-0024/15) pagal 2014–2020 m. INTERREG Pietų Baltijos programą. Bendrasis projekto siekinys: skatinti jaunimą įsitraukti į vietos bendruomenių demokratijos kūrimo ir valdymo procesus, išryškinant jaunų žmonių vaidmens svarbą visuomenės vystymosi kontekste. Vykdant CaSYPoT projektą, 2017 m. balandžio–birželio mėn. parengtas ir atliktas jaunimo situacijos tyrimas (anketinė apklausa, adaptuotas LUPP klausimynas, kurio autoriai – C. Hansén ir J. Skålmedal (2015)) Pietų Baltijos regiono šalyse: Švedijoje, Lenkijoje, Rusijoje (Kaliningrado srityje) ir Lietuvoje. Atliekant longitudinį tyrimą, viena klausimyno dalis buvo skirta jaunimo situacijai mokyklose nustatyti. Tikslas – atskleisti jaunimo situaciją ugdymo įstaigose ir, taikant lyginamąjį metodą, išryškinti pavienių savivaldybių ypatumus šiuo aspektu. Jaunuoliams pateikti klausimai, susiję su jų mokymosi aplinka: mokyklos atmosfera (klimatu), santykiais su bendraamžiais ir pedagogais, galimybėmis ir noru įsitraukti į mokymosi bei laisvalaikio veiklų organizavimą ugdymo įstaigoje, mokyklos savivaldą ir pan. Tyrimo grupę sudarė 1593 jaunuoliai nuo 16 iki 19 metų amžiaus iš 6 savivaldybių: Emmabodos (Švedija), Slupsko ir Bartoszyce (Lenkija), Svetlogorsko ir Gusevo (Rusija, Kaliningrado sritis) bei Klaipėdos (Lietuva). Visose savivaldybėse respondentai pagal lytį pasiskirstė tolygiai, išskyrus Svetlogorską, kur dominavo merginos (33 % vaikinų ir 67 % merginų). Daugiau kaip pusė apklaustų jaunuolių visose savivaldybėse mokyklos aplinką įvardijo kaip patrauklią ir saugią teritoriją, teigė, kad jiems patinka ugdymo įstaigos aplinka (atmosfera). Lyginant pastebėta, kad Klaipėdos ir Svetlogorsko jaunuoliai (55 %) šiek tiek mažiau patenkinti mokyklos atmosfera, taip pat ir besimokantieji Emmabodoje (85 %). Nemažai tiriamųjų pripažino, kad vis dar susiduria su tokiomis problemomis kaip patyčios, priekabiavimas, prievarta, lyčių lygybės ar demokratijos principų nesilaikymas ar ryški konkurencija mokyklos aplinkoje. Didesnė dalis respondentų visose savivaldybėse atsakė, kad žino, kur kreiptis pagalbos mokykloje, esant patyčioms ar panašaus pobūdžio reiškiniams. Be to, tyrimas atskleidė, kad 16–19 metų jaunuolius labiausiai domina, ko ir kaip bus mokomasi mokykloje, kokie bus namų darbai, kaip bus sudarytas tvarkaraštis, kokie reikalavimai bus keliami egzaminams, bet jaučiasi nepakankamai informuoti, ar bus sudarytos sąlygos dalyvauti planuojant šiuos procesus. Didžioji dalis jaunuolių tirtose savivaldybėse turi savo siekių ir pageidauja aktyvesnės įtraukties į mokyklos bendruomenės veiklas: Svetlogorske (92 %), Bartoszyce (89 %), Slupske (83 %). Aptartos tendencijos atskleidžia ir keletą kontraversiškų situacijų, kita vertus, suprantama, kad neįmanoma nubrėžti paralelės tarp tos pačios šalies miestų, tad išryškėjusios tendencijos gali būti būdingos tik konkrečiam miestui, o ne šaliai. Ir, nors Emmabodos jaunimo situacija geriausia mokyklose, bet galima pastebėti, kad mokinių dalyvavimo priimant sprendimus mokykloje skaičius, lyginant su kitais miestais, nedidelis. Ir priešingai, nors Klaipėdos ugdymo įstaigose skatinama pagarba, pagalba vienas kitam, tačiau kartu įžvelgiame, kad vis dar gajos patyčios ir priekabiavimo apraiškos. Apibendrindami galime teigti, kad lyginamasis tyrimas atskleidė jaunų žmonių požiūrį, lūkesčius ir atkreipė dėmesį į įvairias problemas jų ugdymosi įstaigose. Tikimės, kad tyrimo išvados ir rekomendacijos prisidės prie jaunimo politikos bei strategijos formavimo bei didins jaunosios kartos motyvaciją ir įsitraukimą į mokyklos bei visuomeninį gyvenimą. This study presents an internationally (cross-border) representative picture of the school environment, atmosphere and action taken by schools aiming at the involvement of students in their actions. The study was conducted within the framework of the CaSYPoT project (Capacity Building for Strategic Youth Policy and Transnational Cooperation) under the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2014-2020 (Project No STHB.05.01.00-SE-0024/15). The main aim of the CaSYPot project was to encourage young people to get involved in local democracy, and to present youth as a resource in the development of society. Furthermore, for the design and implementation of the southern Baltic youth strategy, it is important to gain an insight into the current situation regarding the environment in schools. One section of this survey was addressed to the situation of youth in schools. The international survey for the CaSYPoT project was conducted among 1,593 students, in six towns in the southern Baltic region, in Sweden, Poland, Russia and Lithuania, from April to June 2017. The project partner’s towns carried out a survey on teenagers aged 16 to 19, identifying their needs and problems in school, and providing comparable data. The questionnaire contained questions addressing young people’s well-being and atmosphere of safety, the climate at school, and their experience in getting involved in the work of the school and their influence on decision making. To sum up, the study describes the current situation in schools, which is essential for the development and evaluation of future policies and actions. The survey covers a wide range of student opinions on school, and begins with a summary of the key findings drawn from an analysis of the survey, and strategic recommendations for the future.

Dviračių dalijimosi sistema (DDS) skatina Klaipėdos miesto ir priemiesčių gyventojų darnų judumą, t. y. trumpu atstumu (3–5 km) po miestą keliauti nuomotais dviračiais. Tokia nauja keliavimo tradicija, ypač šiltuoju metų laiku, skatina kasdienio judumo poreikiams naudoti dviračius kaip keliavimo lengvaisiais automobiliais alternatyvą. Straipsnyje apžvelgti kitų šalių pavyzdžiai, skatinantys po miesto teritorijas keliauti dviračiais, išanalizuotos DDS įgyvendinimo socialinės ir geografinės dimensijos Klaipėdoje. Geografiniu požiūriu vertintos keliavimo dviračiais sąlygos, dviračių infrastruktūra, takų būklė. Aptarti miesto ir priemiesčių gyventojų apklausos dėl DDS vystymo, poreikio keliauti dviračiais rezultatai. Parengtas DDS stotelių geolokacijos planas atitinka gyventojų keliavimo po miestą dviračiais poreikį, skatinant darnaus judumo principų įgyvendinimą. The changing economic situation as well as the rise of ecological ideas, both revert to the reduction of consumption of resources, i.e., to saving and preserving them with as little traces of human consequences as possible. These trends are also appropriate for the public transport systems in big cities. The pursuit of a healthy lifestyle related to the use of bicycles for daily mobility. The coherent work of municipal and other local authorities in developing bicycle infrastructure provides good conditions for increasing the awareness of bicycle usage for daily mobility as alternative to cars. One of the examples is the Bike-Sharing System (hereinafter – BSS), which has already existed in Lithuania for several years. Due to the lack of information, urban residents are not yet fully acquainted with this system or have unproperly perceived the essential operational principles of BSS. In recent years, the series of articles on the use of bicycles for daily mobility in urban areas have been published by European, Chinese, and US researchers, however, in Lithuania, practically there are no such research, as well as in Latvia, Belarus, Russia and Poland. In Lithuania, this topic has not even been under geographical and social examination. In Klaipėda’s Strategic Development Plan for 2013–2020, it is envisaged the implementation of principles of sustainable mobility in the system of urban communication. One of the principles is the development of bicycle infrastructure and the possibility of choosing an alternative mode of travel. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the infrastructure of bicycle transport, i.e., to equip bicycle paths, parking lots, bike storage places, safe bike riding trails, and to introduce safety measures that allow combining bicycle transport with other modes of transport. Since 17 May 2017, in the city of Klaipėda, this system was implemented by the private joint stock company “City Bee”, instead of the municipality’s planes to install BSS. There were founded 17 stops for bike sharing with 43 bikes for rent. These facilities were also installed in Kopgalis and Free Economic Zone. According to the collected data of observation, people got interested in the newly installed BSS in the city. There have been even determined the five most popular stops: nearby the Polyclinics, the University, New Ferry Quay, Acropolis and Meridianas. According to the survey, in which participated 259 respondents of Klaipėda city and suburban areas, 171 respondents (66%) knew about a bike sharing system and its main operational principles. Moreover, the respondents also considered that BBS stops should be located in strategically convenient places near the busiest places devoted for pedestrians. For example, they considered these bike stops to be located on the main streets of the city nearby the bus stops, public buildings (educational institutions, shopping and entertainment centres, markets, libraries, etc.). Applying the interpolation method, the authors of the paper defined the perspective BSS servicing areas in the city and based on the results of the buffer analysis proposed a geolocation of BSS in the city.

Pateikiamos esminės pagrindinių programinių dokumentų, nustatančių prioritetines Kaliningrado srities socialinės ekonominės raidos XXI a. kryptis, charakteristikos. Vertinant regiono raidą atkreipiamas dėmesys į sisteminius planavimo trūkumus, įvertinamas pakitusios geopolitinės situacijos ir pasaulinių naftos kainų kritimo poveikis kaliningradiečių gyvenimo lygiui. Galimas strateginis regiono raidos proveržis siejamas su srities statuso problemos sprendimu. Kaliningrad Oblast is not a typical region of Russia. Geographically isolated from Russian territory, during the Soviet period it was a highly militarized and economically backward region. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the question of Kaliningrad region status became strategically important for its socio-economic development. A dilemma arose: will the region remain Russian military outpost or will it become a modern European region. The latter scenario meant the necessity to provide the region with a special status – give more rights, more freedom and independence. At the end of 20th century and the beginning of 21st century it seemed that Russian Government realized the specifics of Kaliningrad Oblast and was ready to provide it with a special status. In 1991 a free economic zone was established in the region, and talks about a possibility of turning Kaliningrad into “Baltic Hong Kong” started. During this period the European Union (EU) gave additional impetus to the vision of Kaliningrad region status change. Brussels aimed to help Russia turn the region into a territory of fruitful cooperation. In 1997 a partnership and cooperation agreement between Russia and EU including the intention to transform Kaliningrad Region into a “pilot” region was drawn. The latter meant that the region was supposed to become a bridge joining Russia with EU and the West. In 1999, in Moscow, a strategy of the development of relationship between Russia and EU was published in which Russia called Kaliningrad Oblast a “pilot” region and suggested EU drawing a special agreement concerning Kaliningrad region. However, in fact Moscow was not planning to give any special rights and independence to Kaliningrad Oblast. In 2002 it became clear that the region would remain an integral and fully controlled part of Russia, the development of which would mainly depend on the interests of Moscow and not of the region. The status of the region has not changed to this day. Kaliningrad Oblast does not differ in any aspects from other subjects of Russian Federation. Recently the Government of Kaliningrad Oblast, members of political parties and non-governmental organizations have been trying to persuade Moscow of the necessity to publish a federal law establishing a special status of the region. In 2001 when there still were hopes about Russia’s cooperation with the West, the region’s development programme for the period until 2010 was approved. The main aim of the programme was to create conditions for stable socio-economic development, reach the level of development of the neighbouring countries (Lithuania and Poland), and establish a favourable climate for investments for the ally between Russia and European Union. In the programme all funds were to go to priority sectors, where amber mining and processing, fishing and fish processing industry, and agro-industrial complex were of top priority. In 2008 a new edition of the Programme establishing the following regional development trends for the period 2009–2014 was approved: to improve ecological situation in the region, ensure energy security of the region, develop tourism and recreation, and expand the sector of social services. In 2014 the Programme was renewed one more time for the period until 2020 where the following plans were included: to establish sectors in the regional economy able to compete in the world market, modernize social infrastructure of the area, fully exploit touristic and recreational potential of the area, and etc. During the above period two programme documents of long-term regional development were prepared by the government of Kaliningrad Oblast. In 2006 a programme of socio-economical development of Kaliningrad region in 2007–2016, and in 2012 a long-term strategy of socio-economical development of the region were published. Key priorities highlighted in the programme were efficient integration into international production, labour and capital markets, technological modernization of production process, ensuring the competiveness of Kaliningrad region in the Baltic sea macro-region, and others, while in the list of aims, the main one was reaching European standard of living and environment quality. In the strategy approved in 2012, three possible developmental scenarios were constructed – inert, active and ambitious. The Government of the region then declared its intention to follow the ambitious scenario what practically meant the revival of the concept of “pilot” region: the region must turn down concessions and preferences from Moscow, the development of inner market, exploitation of objective competitive advantages (amber resources, geographical position and climate) and joining international division of labour are to become main developmental priorities. Having such strategy, tourism, amber mining and processing, IT sector and the development of traditional industries have been chosen as priorities. Specific indicators and statistical data show that all programmes and strategies of the development of Kaliningrad Oblast have not been essentially realized. The strong side of the documents is objective identification of developmental problems of the region and its individual economy branches, such as energy resources and raw material supply and tariffs, transport and service difficulties, shortage of qualified labour force, complicated ecological situation, different level of development of western and eastern parts of the region, high level of bureaucratic barriers and corruption, and etc. [...]

Dėl bendros istorinės patirties, kultūros, tikslų ir mentaliteto derėtų labiau save sieti su Centrinės Europos valstybėmis – Čekija, Slovakija, Vengrija ir Lenkija. Current political situation in Europe was a wakeup call for a lot of Europeans. Migrant crisis provoked them to ask new questions about their own identity as both members of Europe and as individuals with a distinct an ethnic origin. Globalization made Western World question not only their identities, but also different theories about cultural evolution. Right now for most members of European Union, and furthermore of Western World, the idea of multiculturalism seems unlikely to be possible, and might cost the west and Europe its future. Focus on clashes of different civilizations as a starting point in understanding international relations lets us get a bigger picture of a very detailed, intervened and unclear system, while its “objective truth” is doubtful, different theories about it can help in better understanding and after that – better political positioning. There is a clear distinction between Islam and West civilizations that are more than only religious differences – it is also about mentality, psychology and ethics. So far most successful civilization known as the Western world is not quite singular – its culture and mentalities is different in different parts of the world. While whole Europe has a lot in common its borders are redrawn after every major political, economic or cultural change, and even after that you still have to point out that there are still many differences between different regions in Europe. The western “core” has been doing cultural exports for centuries now, and based on how much of that influence different Europe regions got, and how integral they are to the face of Europe we can say how its regions should be divided. Just like Europe’s, region maps are drawn and redrawn. Two countries who have long, and substansful relationships with the rest of Europe are Turkey and Russia. Both of them are regarded as peripheries of main Europe. Russia’s distinct difference from her western neighboring gave birth to a new term for a “Central Europe”. Consisting of Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland Central European countries share same mentalities, history, goals and dreams. Lithuania’s struggles throughout the ages mirror ones of Central Europe very well, and while it is usually not regarded as a part of it has more than a fair share of differences from Russia and a lot of similarities to Central European countries, even a long lasting relationship with Poland. There is a great opportunity in siding with these countries with same goals and mentalities, because it would provide Lithuania a better heard voice among countries that are far more integral to the Western world, European Union or Europe itself.

Naujojo žmogaus sukūrimo idėjos užuomazgų galima rasti senovės Graikijoje ir Romoje, taip pat utopistų, švietėjų kūriniuose, teologiniuose tekstuose, tačiau ši ideologema galutinai susiformavo XIX a. pabaigoje, o bandymai ją realizuoti praktiškai sietini su (para)totalitarizmo įsigalėjimu. Vienas iš žinomiausių tokių bandymų pavyzdžių – siekis sukurti Naująjį sovietinį žmogų. Šis bandymas nuo kitų skiriasi komunistine ideologija, kuri kiekvienam reiškiniui suteikia „papildomų reikšmių ar funkcijų“ (Prozorov, 2013, p. 210). Kitaip tariant, visus dalykus SSRS galima suprasti ir paaiškinti tik diktatūros tikslu – utopinė ateities visuomenė „komunizmas“, kurios vardu valstybė viską ir visus reguliavo. Atsisakius siekių sukurti tobulą biologinį individą, ilgainiui susitelkta į ideologiškai teisingo naujojo žmogaus, komunizmo statytojo, formavimą. Švietimas buvo vienas iš pagrindinių šio uždavinio vykdytojų. Siekdami išsiaiškinti, kaip naujojo žmogaus vaizdinys atsispindėjo ugdymo (ypač pradinio) turinyje, išanalizavome 36 vadovėlius, išleistus 1925–1985 m. ir naudotus sovietinės Rusijos ir Baltijos valstybių mokyklose. Nors sąvoka „naujasis žmogus“ apima ir vyriškos, ir moteriškos lyties asmenį, vis dėlto dažniausiai omenyje turimas vyras. Šiame straipsnyje mes siekėme aptarti, kaip vadovėliuose pateiktas sovietinės moters paveikslas atkreipdami dėmesį į šiuos aspektus: kas būdinga naujajam sovietiniam vyrui ar moteriai? Ko sovietinis režimas tikėjosi iš moters „Naujojo sovietinio žmogaus“ projekto kontekste? Kaip „Naujojo sovietinio žmogaus“ projektas atspindėjo lyčių lygybės idėją? The “New Man” is a utopian concept that involves creating an ideal man and replacing the imperfect human being. The beginning of the ideas of creating the new man can be found in ancient Greece and Rome, in the works of utopians and educators, as well as in theological texts. Although this ideologeme as one of the constructs of modernity was fully formed by the end of the 19th century, the efforts to practically implement it are connected with the establishment of (para)totalitarianism. One of the best-known examples of such an attempt was the ambition to create the New Soviet Man. After giving up aspirations to create a perfect biological individual, in the long-term perfective, the main focus was laid on forming an ideologically correct New Man, a builder of communism. Education was seen as one of the key means of achieving this objective. Seeking to identify how the image of the New Man was reflected in the curriculum (primary in particular), 36 textbooks published between 1925–1985 and used in the state schools of Soviet Russia and the Baltic States were analysed. Although the concept of the New Man includes both the male and female person, the most frequently considered is a male. This article aims to discuss how textbooks represent the Soviet woman by considering the following aspects: what was specific to the New Soviet Man – Woman? What did the Soviet regime expect from women in the context of the New Soviet Man project? How did the project of New Man reflect the gender equality idea?

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas 1906–1914 m. Vilniuje veikęs politinio rusiško radikalaus monarchizmo sparnas, kurį sudarė imperinių partijų „Rusų tautos sąjungos“, „Visos Rusijos Dubrovino vardo rusų tautos sąjungos“ ir „Arkangelo Mykolo vardo rusų tautinės sąjungos“ vietiniai skyriai. Trumpai apžvelgiamas skyrių atsiradimas, raida ir veikla, identifikuojami nariai ir jų migracija per ideologiškai artimas organizacijas. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad pagrindiniai radikalaus monarchizmo rėmėjai Vilniuje buvo pavieniai politiškai angažuoti stačiatikių dvasininkai, sentikių verslininkai, valstybinių ir privačių mokyklų mokytojai, tarnautojai, geležinkelių darbininkai ir kt. Radikalūs monarchistai ne tik dalyvavo miesto politiniame gyvenime, jie ypač aktyviai stengėsi vystyti ekonominę veiklą, steigė darbininkų arteles, apsiėmė vykdyti didžiulius trikotažo gaminių siuvimo vietinio garnizono kariams užsakymus ir įsteigė arbatinę bei skaityklą, kur jautėsi jų ideologijos dvasia. Po 1912 m. rinkimų į Ketvirtąją dūmą šios srovės atstovai beveik visiškai nutraukė aktyvesnę politinę veiklą ir kartu su Vilniuje veikusiomis konservatyviomis visuomeninėmis ir religinėmis organizacijomis daugiausia užsiėmė savo ideologijos sklaida bei ekonomine veikla. The article analyses the branches of imperial radical political parties that operated in Vilnius between 1906 and 1914, their history, members, ideology and activities. The research is divided into two periods of activity, 1906 to 1912, and 1912 to 1914. The first period saw the formation of branches of political parties, their political activities, and differentiation; whereas in the second period, after the 1912 elections to the Fourth Duma, radical monarchists withdrew from the political arena, and focused mostly on social, economic and religious spheres of urban life. The nucleus of the political movement was formed by the Orthodox clergy, teachers in public and private schools, junior civil servants, reservists, and railway workers. An important role when establishing branches of radical monarchist movements was played by certain members of the Old Believer community. With no support in the city, which was dominated by a foreign-born infidel population, they tried to penetrate the local Russian community and promote the old, monarchist, traditionalist and patriarchal dogmas declared in the ideologeme they advocated: ‘Orthodoxy, Autocracy, Nationalism’. When participating in the political struggle for a place in local dumas, radical monarchists in Vilnius not only distanced themselves from their more liberal counterparts, the nationalists, but also became involved in internal conflicts. The end of the 1905 revolution, the turn towards more secular Russian nationalism by Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin, and disagreements between local monarchists, resulted in the torpidity of monarchism on the eve of the First World War.

Land-based Trans-Eurasian transport corridors, their current development and perspectives have been high on the political agenda in the last two decades not only in Europe and China but also in the transit countries such as russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. A number of conceptual initiatives are already being implemented. The Belt and road or the one Belt, one road (oBor) initiative on the Chinese side and the rail Baltica project from the European perspective have gained special attention. Big-scale infrastructural projects are also being implemented by transit countries, e.g., the construction of a motorway from China to Europe—from Kazakhstan via russia to Belarus—to facilitate the land-based shortcut for cargo transport within the Eurasian transport corridor. This article investigates the general framework conditions of infrastructural investments into projects related to Eurasian logistics and discusses strategic areas of intersection between the European activities and the new Silk Way. in the framework of the oBor initiative, this article also addresses the interaction of the Chinese–Kazakh–russian–Belarusian –polish railway transport, with a special focus on Belarusian–polish cross-border issues. The authors have participated in several projects focusing on transport corridors and discuss the research question of how different Eurasian land-based transport corridors can be integrated and which strategic role can the rail Baltica project play in the context of the new Silk route. The research is based on surveys, expert interviews, secondary data research and case studies.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas atkurtos Lietuvos Respublikos krašto apsaugos sistemos ginklų ir karo technikos įsigijimo 1990–2004 m. procesas, išskirti jo etapai, juos apibrėžiantys politiniai ir ekonominiai veiksniai, kilusios problemos, iššūkiai ir ypatumai. Tyrinėjama, kiek ir kokių ginklų būta Lietuvoje atkūrus nepriklausomybę ir kokią galimybę jais disponuoti turėjo atsikurianti Lietuvos Respublikos krašto apsauga, iš kokių šaltinių ir kokiu būdu jų buvo įsigyjama. When the independence of the Republic of Lithuania was restored in 1990, the recovery of all necessary institutions ensuring statehood, including the National Defence System, began. As there were no national military units in the Soviet Army, Lithuanian Armed Forces could not take over Lithuanian servicemen and weapons. Consequently, the Lithuanian military faced serious challenges in developing an organizational system, appointing staff and providing it with equipment, armament and materiel. Purchasing weapons in the black market through intermediaries, payments in cash and transferring them among institutions facilitated the abuse and plundering of weapons. The following non-military institutions also participated in the procurement of weapons for the National Defence System: Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania and the Security Division of the Supreme Council – Reconstituent Seimas. The support of weapons and military equipment received from foreign countries was of particular importance. The article analyzes the needs and acquisition of armament made by the National Defence System in the period from 1990 to 2004, i.e. from the very beginning of its establishment to joining the NATO Alliance and key factors of the process, encountered problems and peculiarities. The study aims to evaluate the amount and type of weapons in the independent Lithuania and opportunities for their disposal in the restoration of the National Defence System; to distinguish the stages of armament acquisition, the factors defining them and significant political events and decisions; to examine the main cases of the armament acquisition and to evaluate quantitative and qualitative indicators.

The marriage of Duke Vytautas the Great’s daughter Sophia to the Grand Duke of Moscow Vasily in 1391 was a momentous event that impinged on the course of history. Although the circumstances in which this marriage was concluded address extremely important historical issues, such as relations between Lithuania and Moscow, Vytautas’ biography, and the politics of the Grand Duchy of Moscow towards the end of the fourteenth century, historiography has not recorded many attempts to study them. This is probably due to the rather vague primary sources which are dominated by the accounts contained in the chronicles. The author of the article makes an effort to analyse them, which, combined with other evidence, as well as a review of the political situation at the time, led him to believe that it was the Moscow side that initiated the talks on the marriage of Sophia and Vasily. The Grand Duke of Moscow, Dmitry of the Don, had been looking for the possibility of a dynastic rapprochement with the ruling circles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for a long time. The conclusion of the Polish-Lithuanian agreement in Krevo (1385), uncertain situation in the Golden Horde and the desire to strengthen the position of his son were the reasons that could force the Moscow ruler to act more decisively in this field. Therefore, having left Tartar captivity at the end of 1385, Vasily son of Dmitri of the Don, went west, where he took the opportunity of meeting Vytautas to start first talks. The negotiations were interrupted due to a rather weak political position of Vytautas before 1389. They were resumed when it turned out that Władysław Jagiełło, after taking the throne in Kraków, did not intend to forgo his active policy in Eastern Europe. Therefore, when Vytautas fought together with the Teutonic Knights to seize power in Lithuania, Moscow decided to support his efforts. In this way, the duke, with his allies in the Teutonic Order and strong ties with Moscow, became a dangerous rival for Władysław Jagiełło. Such a turn of events could have influenced the Polish king’s decision to reconcile with his cousin yet again.

The annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 dramatically changed routine practices and perceptions about Lithuania’s foreign policy agenda. The threat to this small state’s security marked a new era of active searching for self-definition and policy direction. The article aims to analyse the dominant tendencies of Lithuania’s identity in foreign and security policy after 2014. Lithuania is selected precisely because of its vocal reaction and concerns after the annexation of Crimea. This article analyses speeches, comments and statements made within contemporary political discourse by key political leaders in Lithuania’s foreign and security policy. It argues that – in light of potential military threat – political leaders advocate for increased self-responsibility and readiness to act as the relations with their respective partners remain both crucial and complicated.

This research focuses on the features and transformations of power groups and their role in the political life of the societies of the Baltic countries. This article aims to analyse structural and functional changes in the composition of the Baltic political elites after these countries gained independence in the 1990s. The main objective of this research is to reveal the general and the specific in the transformations of Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian elites. Changes in the structure of power groups are considered on a sub-regional scale in view of the current Russian-Baltic political interaction. The common and distinctive features in the transformations of Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian elites are identified. Quantitative methods of analysis are used to detect trends in the selection of channels and mechanisms of elite recruitment. The study of power groups concentrated on both large-scale socio-political transformations and individual practices. A comprehensive examination of elite transformation in small states such as the Baltics requires the consideration of both domestic and foreign policy aspects. The thesis is put forward that despite some differences between the Baltic States their political elites have undergone very similar transformations since the 1990s. At the time, Baltic elites asserted continuity with pre-war Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia and detachment from the Soviet past. The 1990s elite struggle for power led to sharp ethnic, linguistic and political divides in Baltic societies. These rifts limit competition between power groups and reduce the ability of political systems to renew themselves. Having reached the ‘back to the West’ goal, Baltic elites replaced it with the idea of ‘Russian threat’. Bridging internal divides, which may weaken the power of the elites, was postponed as a result.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami rusų kilmės Antrojo pasaulinio karo pabėgėlių iš Lietuvos ryšiai su rusų diaspora JAV, gilinamasi į individualias dalyvavimo rusų emigrantų religinių ir visuomeninių organizacijų veikloje patirtis bei istorinėse rusų stačiatikių kapinėse išlikusių antkapinių paminklų spektrą. Atsižvelgiama į tai, kokios įtakos rusų kilmės karo pabėgėlių iš Lietuvos ryšiams su rusų diaspora turėjo kilmė, šeiminiai ir socialiniai ryšiai, Lietuvoje ir svetur įgytas išsilavinimas, darbinės ir visuomeninės veiklos patirtys. Tyrimas atskleidė, kad Antrojo pasaulinio karo pabėgėliai iš Lietuvos, išlikę ištikimi rusų kultūrai ir išlaisvintos iš komunizmo Rusijos idėjai, JAV įsijungė į visuomeninę veiklą, kuria siekta supažindinti amerikiečius su ikirevoliucinės Rusijos kultūrinėmis ir religinėmis tradicijomis, demaskuoti komunistinę ideologiją. Dalis pabėgėlių, kaip ir rusų diaspora, įsiliejo į užsienio Rusų stačiatikių bažnyčios, priešiškos SSRS atžvilgiu dėl religinio persekiojimo, dvasininkų ir tikinčiųjų bendruomenes., This article analyzes the ties that Russian refugees from Lithuania during World War II had with the Russian diaspora in the United States, as revealed by individual experiences of participation in the Russian emigrants’ religious and social organizations and by surviving gravesite monuments in historical Russian Orthodox cemeteries in the United States. What influence on the ties of Russian war refugees from Lithuania with the Russian diaspora did their ethnic background, their family and social connections, their education obtained in Lithuania and elsewhere, and their work and social activities have? That is one of the questions this article tries to clarify. The research revealed that those World War II Russian refugees from Lithuania who remained loyal to Russian culture and to the idea of a Russia liberated from communism joined the civic activities in the United States that aimed to acquaint Americans with the cultural and religious traditions of Russia before the Communist revolution and also aimed to deconstruct Communist ideology. Some of the refugees entered into ties with the Russian diaspora through membership in communities of clergy and faithful opposed to the USSR because of its religious persecution of the Russian Orthodox Church abroad.

JAV įsijungus į karą prieš nacistinę Vokietiją ir plačiu mastu teikiant pagalbą sąjungininkei Sovietų Sąjungai, komunistuojančios lietuvių išeivių organizacijos Amerikoje išgyveno trumpą triumfo laikotarpį: „paramos sovietams“ šūkiu jos sėkmingai mobilizavo kairiųjų pažiūrų tautiečius į šalpos organizacijas ir surinko daug aukų, paliko pėdsaką Pagalbos kovojančiai Rusijai fondo veikloje. Straipsnyje analizuojama kelių 1941–1947 m. JAV veikusių prosovietinių lietuvių komitetų (Medikalės pagalbos, Pundelių vajaus, Lietuvai pagalbos teikimo) veikla, jų organizuotos humanitarinės pagalbos apimtis ir gautų vadinamųjų „amerikoniškų dovanų“ svarba sovietų režimui Lietuvos SSR, taip pat tiriama amerikiečių pilietinė iniciatyva užmegzti kontaktus (laiškais ir vizitais) su stalininės valstybės gyventojais. When the United States joined the Allied war against Nazi Germany and aid on a broad scale for the allied Soviet Union was being organized, Lithuanian immigrant organizations in America sympathetic to communism enjoyed a brief period of triumph: armed with the slogan “Support the Soviets” they successfully marshaled left-wing nationals for work in relief organizations and collected many contributions to the Russian War Relief Fund. This article analyzes the activities of several pro-Soviet Lithuanian committees active in the United States from 1941 to 1947 (Medikalė pagalba [Medical Aid], Pundelių vajus [Package Drive], Lietuvai pagalbos teikimo komitetas [Committee to Aid Lithuania]); the extent of the humanitarian assistance they organized; and the importance to the Lithuanian SSR of the so-called “American gifts” they sent out. We also discuss the civic initiative by the Lithuanian-American side to establish contact (through letters and visits) with the inhabitants of the Stalinist state.

Straipsnio tikslas – apžvelgti 1963–1993 m. sovietinio karinio, techninio paveldo objekto Kaune – tanko – istorinę raidą. Tyrime remtasi įvairaus pobūdžio šaltiniais ir literatūra apie tanko atsiradimą Kaune, perkėlimą į kitą vietą ir išvežimą į Rusiją. Pirmajame skyriuje aprašyta tanko sukūrimo istorija ir pateikiami tanko taktiniai techniniai duomenys, panaudojimo perspektyvos. Antrajame skyriuje analizuojamas tanko paminklo pastatymas Kaune, sugriaunant tanko „Kauno išvaduotojo“ mitą, perkėlimas iš vieno į kitą vietą, panaudojimo bei išgabenimo į užsienį peripetijos. Trečiasis skyrius skirtas tanko likimui Rusijoje. Atlikus tyrimą paaiškėjo, kad tanko paminklo pastatymo vietos turėjo daugiau nei memorialinę paskirtį, o pats istorinis naratyvas atskleidė tanko „išvaduotojo“ melą ir sovietmečio epochos mitą. The aim of the article is to analyse and evaluate the historical development of the military and technical heritage object – tank’s monument in Kaunas in 1963–1993. The present research has used variuos source and literature about tank’s appearance in town, its displacement and removal to Russia. Chapter 1 describes about the creation, tactical-technical data and exploitation pespectives of tank IS-2; Chapter 2 analyses the presentaton of tank’s monument in Kaunas, destroying the myth of tank “liberator”, its displacement and removal abroad peripeteia; Chapter 3 is dedicated to tank’s destination in Russia. The research has demonstrated that the places of tanks’ presentation had more than memorial destination and its historical narration revealed lie of tank “liberator” and myth of the Soviet era.

Šiame straipsnyje analizuojama Vladislovo Starevičiaus (1882–1965) – lėlinės (erdvinės, tūrinės) animacijos pradininko kūryba. Kino kūrėjo darbai apima net kelias valstybes. Lietuvoje, tuo laikotarpiu buvusioje Rusijos imperijos sudėtyje, susiformavo V. Starevičiaus kaip kūrėjo asmenybė, sukurti pirmieji dokumentiniai, entomologiniai filmai bei pirmasis erdvinės animacijos filmas. Rusijoje menininkas tęsė animacinių filmų kūrybą, tačiau didžiąją čia sukurtų filmų dalį sudaro vaidybiniai filmai. Ilgiausias ir dažnai vertinamas kaip sėkmingiausias kūrybos laikotarpis siejamas su Prancūzija. V. Starevičiaus filmai neretai buvo kuriami remiantis pasakos ar pasakėčios motyvais, nors menininkas yra sukūręs ir visiškai originalių scenarijų. Animacijos pradininkui visuomet nuo karjeros pradžios buvo svarbu eksperimentuoti su kino techniniais sprendimais, juos tobulinti, kurti naujus efektus. Per visą kūrybos laikotarpį, priešingai nei dauguma kitų kino kūrėjų, V. Starevičius išliko susikoncentravęs į kino animaciją, kurioje savo darbais sukūrė atpažįstamą autorinį stilių, turėjusį įtakos kitų kūrėjų filmams. This article analyzes creation works of Wladyslaw Starewich (1882-1965), who is pioneer of puppet (also known as spatial, volumetric) animation. Filmmaker’s works cover even several countries. W. Starewich personality as a creator was formed in Lithuania (in that historical period as part of the Russian Empire), first documentary and entomological films and first spatial animation film were created. The artist continued his animation film creation in Russia, but feature films are the major part of films created here, which have a lot of mysticism, mystery, fabulosity. Creative period in France is the longest and often seen as the most successful. W. Starewich films frequently were created based on motives of fairy-tales or fables, although the artist has created and completely original script. For animation pioneer always since the beginning of his career it was important to experiment with film technical solutions, to improve them, to create new effects. Animation creator designed all his movies by himself from the beginning to the end (only family members, wife and daughter helped him) and he never intended to work in film companies. Maybe perhaps this is why he created peculiar, well-recognizable style which fascinated and influenced other filmmakers at that time.

Gausi archyvinė dokumentacija, susijusi su Lietuva ir lietuviais, yra saugoma Rusijoje, tačiau ne tik Sankt Peterburge ar Maskvoje. Lietuvių bylos, kuriose yra nemažai egodokumentų, išblaškytos po visą milžinišką šalies teritoriją, ypač jų daug Sibiro atminties institucijose. Projektas „Lietuvių sibiriada“ sudaro galimybes Lietuvos valstybės istorijos archyve susipažinti su iš Tobolsko, Tomsko, Krasnojarsko, Irkutsko atvežtomis dokumentų kopijomis. Straipsnyje, taikant dokumentų analizės ir klasifikacijos metodus, bandoma susisteminti informaciją apie Sibiro valstybiniuose archyvuose aptiktą medžiagą, nustatyti jos tipologiją. Nustatyta, kad tyrinėta 1773–1923 m. dokumentacija priklauso tokioms sritims kaip politika, ekonomika, mokslas, švietimas, kultūra, religija, administravimas, teisė, statistika, darbo rinka, migracija. Tai rašytiniai dokumentai (nuo juodraščių ir kopijų iki oficialių originalų) ir vaizdiniai dokumentai (nuotraukos), sukurti pačių lietuvių, raštininkų, valstybės pareigūnų pačiame Sibire, lietuviškose Rusijos gubernijose, Sankt Peterburge ar kitose imperijos vietose pagal poreikį. Tarp aptariamų archyvinių dokumentų dominuoja naratyvinio ir dokumentinio tipo rašytiniai šaltiniai. Aptiktus dokumentus skirstant pagal autoriaus išskirtas kategorijas, aptikta įsakų ir manifestų, nuosprendžių dėl tremties, paskyrimo raštų, pažymėjimų, žiniaraščių, pažymų, sprendimų, teismų protokolų, sąrašų, metrikų, raportų, atsiliepimų, statistinių duomenų, finansinių dokumentų. Iš egodokumentų esama laiškų, prašymų, skundų, pasiaiškinimų, testamentų. Tokiais raštais žmonės siekė pranešti, paklausti, paprašyti, apginti save arba artimuosius, palikti turtą. Valdžia kūrė dokumentus turėdama tikslą informuoti, registruoti, apmokestinti, tremti, išlaisvinti, apgyvendinti, įdarbinti, kaupti duomenis, (ne)išduoti leidimus, skirti pašalpas, mokėti algas. Nuotraukas darydavo įamžinimo, spaudos, identifikavimo, tapatybės nustatymo tikslais. Sibiro archyvuose rasti dokumentai susiję su tokiomis Lietuvos istorijai ypač aktualiomis temomis kaip 1830–1831 m., 1863–1864 m. sukilimai, LDK aneksija, rusifikacijos politika, tremtiniai ir kaliniai, policijos stebėjimas, mirties atvejai, išlaisvinimas, grąžinimas į luomą, įdarbinimas, santuoka, paso gavimas, verslas, persikėlimas, grįžimas į Lietuvą. Yra dokumentinių liudijimų ir apie migravusius lietuvius: darbininkus ir žemdirbius, studentus ir dėstytojus, verslininkus ir amatininkus, gydytojus ir kunigus, pareigūnus ir įvairius kitus specialistus, karo pabėgėlius ir repatriantus. Raštų adresatais tapdavo gubernatorių kanceliarijos, gubernijų valdybos, teismai, įvairios kitos institucijos, pareigūnai, privatūs žmonės. Tyrimas parodė, kad 1773–1923 m. Sibiro lituanistiniai dokumentai dažniausiai teikia duomenų apie deportuotus asmenis (politinius, kriminalinius), liudija apie jų prašymus. Bet taip pat yra reikšmingų Lietuvos istorijai bylų apie kolonijas, įvairius specialistus, žymius asmenis, verslininkus, įvykius pačioje Lietuvoje. Dokumentų gausa bei įvairovė leidžia giliau ištirti šią lietuvių istorijos dalį. Extensive archival documentation related to Lithuania and Lithuanians is kept in Russia, and not only in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Archival cases of Lithuanians containing high numbers of ego-documents, are dispersed throughout the vast territory, and are especially numerous in the Siberian memory institutions. Thanks to the project Lithuanian Sibiriada, copies of documents brought from Tobolsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk and Irkutsk can be found in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives. By using the analysis of documents and the method of classification, this article tries to systematize the information about the relevant materials found in the state archives of Siberia and to determine their typology. The studied documentation covering the period between 1773 and 1923 was found to belong to such areas of public life as politics, economics, science, education, culture, religion, administration, law, statistics, labor, and migration. These are documents (ranging from drafts and copies to official originals) produced by Lithuanians themselves, scribes, state officials not only in Siberia, but also in Lithuania, St. Petersburg or other parts of the Russian Empire. By type, among the discovered documents, there are decrees and manifests, deportation sentences, appointment letters, certificates, sheets, decisions, court records, lists, metrics, reports, reviews, statistics, financial documents. In terms of ego-documents, letters, requests, complaints, explanations, and wills can be found. With such texts, people sought to report, ask, defend themselves or those close to them, or bequeath property. The government created documents with the purpose of informing, registering, taxing, deporting, liberating, accommodating, employing, accumulating data; (not) issuing permits, allowances, salaries. Photos were taken for the mass media, identification, or inspection. Siberian documents touch on such topics as the uprisings, the annexation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, attempts of Russification, exiles and prisoners, police surveillance, deaths, liberation, return to the social group, employment, marriage, obtaining a passport, business, resettlement, return to Lithuania. Documentary testimonies are available about free Lithuanians in Siberia: workers and farmers, students and teachers, businesspeople and craftsmen, doctors and priests, officials and various specialists, war refugees and repatriates. The addressees of the letters were the governors’ offices, directorates, courts, various institutions, officials, private people. The study showed that, between 1773 and 1923, Siberian documents about Lithuanians most frequently concern the deported persons (political, criminal), their data and applications. Yet, there are also archival cases significant for the history of Lithuania about the Lithuanian colonies, various specialists, famous personalities, businesspeople, about events in Lithuania itself. The mini-essay suggests that the future of relations between Belarusian and Ukrainian academic communities, as well as public intellectuals, might depend a lot on their success in decolonial practice. The assumption of knowing each other is a colonial leftover of the time when Moscow served as the centre of scientific knowledge production in the region. It is important to reciprocally accept the difference between Belarusian and Ukrainian cases without locating them on an imaginary line closer to or further from Russia. Presenting own cases by Belarusians and Ukrainians has to be prioritized over comparisons or mutual commenting between the two sides. Furthermore, it is an important condition of decolonization that all three countries — without any pairing — have the opportunity not only to maintain their own space for discussion but also to collaborate with fourth countries independently from each other. From the decolonial perspective, there are reasons to believe that Belarusian-Ukrainian reconciliation will not be a part of Russian-Ukrainian reconciliation, but an independent process with its dynamics. Po Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimų Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės žemėse, atitekusiose Rusijos imperijai, imperijos valdžia nuosekliai siekė katalikų bažnytinį gyvenimą tvarkyti pagal ortodoksų Bažnyčios modelį. Ortodoksų tikėjimą išpažįstantys Rusijos imperatoriai uzurpavo ne vieną išimtinai Apaštalų Sosto kompetencijai kanonų teise rezervuotą katalikų religinio gyvenimo sritį. Katedrų kapitulos, vyskupijos hierarchijoje užimančios pirmą vietą po vyskupo, taip pat neišvengė imperijos valdžios intervencijos. Temos literatūroje išsakyta mintis apie nuo XVI a. tolydžio silpnėjusias katedrų kapitulų pozicijas nėra pakankamai argumentuota, tačiau katedrų kapitulų raidoje būta ne vieno, iš laiko perspektyvos lūžiniams priskirtino etapo, kai šios institucijos pozicijos bažnytinėje hierarchijoje akivaizdžiai susilpnėdavo. XIX a. tokių taip pat nestokota. Vilniaus katedros kapitula, drauge su vyskupija įkurta dvasininkų korporacija, kaip ir kitų vyskupijų kapitulos, saistoma pareigos reziduoti prie katedros ir talkinti vyskupui/administratoriui, laikotarpiu po Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimų tęsė veiklą vadovaudamasi kolegialumo principais. Sprendimai, kaip ir iki tol, būdavo priimami kolegialiai bendruose posėdžiuose, vadintuose kapitulomis arba sesijomis. Šiuo straipsniu pristatomo tyrimo tikslas yra remiantis istoriografija ir šaltiniais rekonstruoti Vilniaus katedros kapitulos sesijų raidą XIX a. ir atskleisti jos ypatumus. Glaustai pristatant analizei pasirinktu laikotarpiu rengtų sesijų pobūdį, siekiama nustatyti jų rengimo dažnį, fiksuoti trukmę. Pagrindinis dėmesys skirtas generalinėms sesijoms. Keliamas uždavinys identifikuoti generalinių sesijų posėdžiams pirmininkavusius asmenis, aiškinamasi, kokią vietą analizei pasirinktu laikotarpiu šios pareigos užėmė dvasinių pareigybių hierarchijoje. Siekiama išskirti svarbesnius kolegialiai katedros kapitulos dvasininkų svarstytų klausimų teminius blokus. Keliama hipotezė, kad imperijos valdžios politika Katalikų Bažnyčios atžvilgiu buvo pagrindinis kapitulos sesijų raidą XIX a. įtakojęs veiksnys. Tyrimo chronologinės ribos – 1798–1914 m. imtinai. [...] Like the cathedral chapters of other dioceses, the Vilnius Diocesan Cathedral Chapter, a corporation of clergymen founded in the fourteenth century simultaneously with the diocese, was bound by the duty to reside at the cathedral and assist the bishop/administrator. During the period following the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it continued its activities, which were based on the principles of collegiality. As in the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the decisions delegated to the cathedral chapter used to be passed collegially in joint meetings referred to as chapters or sessions. It was found that in the nineteenth century, the tradition of general sessions was upheld most consistently. The discussion of the peculiarities of the development of sessions is based on the relevant literature and primary sources. The 48 clerics who chaired the general sessions were identified; the number and the years of the sessions they had chaired are presented in the tables. It should be stressed that the list of the chairmen is provisional due to gaps in the sources. The conclusion is that in the nineteenth century, the canons/prelates of the cathedral chapter who at various times served as presidents of the general session were skilled administrators and active in pastoral work. The confessional policy of the Russian imperial authorities, which was directed against the Catholic Church, was found to be one of the main factors influencing the development of the sessions of the cathedral chapter. Compared to the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, in the nineteenth century the spectrum of issues to be decided collegially by the cathedral as a diocesan hierarchical corporation of the clergy was steadily narrowed and the scope was reduced.

Lietuvos kaimynystėje 2008 m. ir 2014 m. įvykę tarptautiniai įvykiai – Rusijos ir Gruzijos karas (2008 m.), nuo 2014 m. besitęsiantis karinis konfliktas Ukrainoje bei Krymo aneksija – turėjo įtakos užsienio ir saugumo politikos formavimui. Šių įvykių kontekste Lietuvoje buvo susirūpinta konvencinių saugumo priemonių telkimu – krašto apsaugos ir gynybos sektoriaus stiprinimu. Kokį vaidmenį šiame procese Lietuvos atveju suvaidino „minkštosios“ – nekonvencinės priemonės, neretai orientuotos į ontologinio saugumo lygmenį, domimasi kur kas mažiau. Straipsnyje, pasitelkiant vizualiųjų kolektyvinės atminties praktikų – paminklų – analizę, siekiama parodyti kolektyvinės atminties ir vizualiai apčiuopiamų jos formų sąsajas su užsienio ir saugumo politikos formavimu Lietuvoje. Nagrinėjant partizaninį karą įpaminklinančias vizualias praktikas, viešosiose Lietuvos erdvėse pastatytas po 2014 m., atskleidžiama, kaip kolektyvinės atminties įveiklinimas prisidėjo prie Rusijos sugrėsminimo, turėjusio didelę įtaką užsienio ir saugumo politikos formavimui bei įgyvendinimui. In 2008 and 2014 the Russian-Georgian war, the military conflict in Ukraine, and the annexation of Crimea have had an impact on Lithuanian foreign and security policy. In the context of these events, Lithuania was concerned about the mobilization of conventional security measures, i.e., strengthening its national defense sector. However, the role as well as the impact of “soft” (unconventional) response devices and strategies in the Lithuanian case has still received little academic interest. This paper, using the analysis of visual collective memory practices (monuments), aims to show the links between collective memory as well as its visually tangible forms and the formation of foreign and security policy in Lithuania. By examining the visual practices reminiscent of guerrilla warfare built in Lithuanian public spaces after 2014, it is revealed how the use of collective memory contributed to the perceived threat from Russia, which had a significant impact on the formation and implementation of foreign and security policy.

Kas buvo Wallenrodia, „Knygotyros“ skaitytojui aiškinti gal ir nevertėtų: apie Karaliaučiuje 1623–1909 m. veikusią aristokratų Wallenrodtų įkurtą biblioteką nemažai rašyta. Ši biblioteka išsiskyrė ne tik savo turtais (jau XVII a. turėjo per 5 tūkst. vertingų knygų ir rankraščių), bet ir paskirtimi: nuo 1650 m. ji buvo atverta visuomenei, taigi jau XVII a. viduryje tapo viešąja biblioteka (1909 m. "Wallenrodia" buvo įjungta į Karaliaučiaus universiteto biblioteką). Po Antrojo pasaulinio karo Vakarų pasaulis ilgai nieko negirdėjo apie Karaliaučiaus bibliotekų (be "Wallenrodijos", ten dar veikė Pilies, Karališkoji, Slaptosios kanceliarijos, Karaliaučiaus universiteto bibliotekos) likimą. Manyta, jog karo metu visos jos buvo sunaikintos. Už geležinės uždangos, sovietinėje Lietuvoje, didžiųjų šalies bibliotekų darbuotojai žinojo, kad jų fonduose yra knygų ir iš "Wallenrodijos", tik garsiai niekam apie tai nebuvo galima kalbėti. Vis dėlto Nojus Feigelmanas, 1975 m. paskelbęs Lietuvos inkunabulų katalogą, jame ne tik suregistravo 30 inkunabulų iš "Wallenrodijos", bet proveniencijų rodyklėje įdėjo ir didesnę šios bibliotekos anotaciją. O dar po trejų metų, 1978-aisiais, Juozas Jurginis paskelbė ir savo prisiminimus apie pokario metais Lietuvos istorikų vykdytas ekspedicijas į Karaliaučiaus kraštą gelbėti ten likusių knygų turtų. Išsamus šių istorinių ekspedicijų rekonstrukcinis tyrimas yra 2000 m. paskelbtas Juozo Marcinkevičiaus straipsnis, atskleidžiantis itin komplikuotas knygų ir rankraščių suradimo bei išgabenimo iš nusiaubtų Rytprūsių į Lietuvą peripetijas. Pastaraisiais dešimtmečiais apie Karaliaučiaus bibliotekas ir jų likimą daug rašė vokiečių kultūros istorikas habil. dr. Axelis Walteris. Vakariečiams kultūros istorikams tapo prieinamos Baltijos šalių ir Rusijos knygų saugyklos, surengta konferencijų, paskelbta solidžių tyrimų Rytų Prūsijos bibliotekų likimo klausimais. Lietuvos mokslinių bibliotekų spausdintiniuose ir senųjų leidinių elektroniniuose kataloguose jau galima surasti sužymėtas iš Rytprūsių pargabentas senąsias knygas (be "Wallenrodijos", daug vertingų leidinių būta Gotholdianoje). Jos tiriamos ir knygotyriniu požiūriu, apie jas skelbiama mokslinėje literatūroje (vien Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių bibliotekos XVI a. fonde yra 1 797 leidiniai su Karaliaučiaus proveniencijomis, daugiausia iš Wallenrodtų bibliotekos). Žodžiu, kaip buvo išsklaidytos Karaliaučiaus bibliotekos ir kad jų knygų rinkinių dabar esama Lietuvoje (didžiosiose Vilniaus bibliotekose), Lenkijoje (Varšuvoje ir Torunėje), Rusijoje (Rusijos mokslų akademijos bibliotekoje Sankt Peterburge, Rusijos valstybinėje bibliotekoje Maskvoje, Valstybinėje viešojoje istorijos bibliotekoje Maskvoje ir kitur), nebėra jokia paslaptis. Straipsnis skirtas unikaliam lietuvių kovos prieš Rusijos 1864–1904 m. vykdytos tautinio persekiojimo politikos epizodui. Jo dalyviai – Vokietijos ir Rusijos imperijų siena perskirtos lietuvių tautos atstovai – Vokietijos pavaldinys, Rytų Prūsijos lietuvis Martynas Jankus (1858–1946), spaustuvės Tilžėje (Tilsit; dabar – Sovetskas Rusijos Federacijos Kaliningrado srityje) savininkas, ir nelegaliai veikusi išsilavinusių lietuvių jaunuolių, Rusijos imperijos pavaldinių grupė, laikas – XIX a. paskutinis dešimtmetis. Šiuo laikotarpiu sparčiai stiprėjo lietuvių tautinis sąjūdis, siekęs suartinti abi tautos dalis ir JAV išeivių bendruomenę. Viena iš svarbiausių bendros kovos priemonių buvo Rusijos teritorijoje uždraustų leidinių lietuvių kalba tradiciniu lotyniškuoju šriftu spausdinimas Rytų Prūsijoje ir slaptas gabenimas per Vokietijos ir Rusijos valstybių sieną į Lietuvą bei platinimas. Iš Lietuvos leidiniai paštu buvo siunčiami lietuvių telkiniams ir pavieniams asmenims Rusijos teritorijoje. Ši kova baigėsi pergale: draudimas buvo panaikintas Rusijos ministrų kabineto įsaku 1904 metais. Dėl politinio pasipriešinimo skatinimo lietuvių inteligentai leido ne tik knygas, brošiūras ir laikraščius, bet ir įvairius smulkiuosius spaudinius – politines proklamacijas. Tekstus parengdavo ir leidybai skirtas lėšas Rytų Prūsijos lietuvių bei vokiečių spaustuvėms siųsdavo Rusijos universitetų studentai ir juos baigę inteligentai lietuviai. Tokių proklamacijų iki mūsų dienų išliko mažai. Vienas iš šių leidinių buvo standartinio Vokietijos atviruko dydžio (vidutiniškai 95 x 140 mm) anoniminė kortelė. Jos Lietuvos bibliotekose ir archyvuose iki šiol rasti trys, Rusijos nacionalinėje bibliotekoje Sankt Peterburge – vienas egzempliorius. Kortelės vienoje pusėje išspausdinta dviejų iliustracijų kompozicija: kaimietė lietuvių moteris ir prieš ją stovintis kazokas su iškeltu rimbu ir buteliu degtinės kaip atlygiu už paklusnumą. Tai simbolizavo stačiatikybės platinimą ir lietuvių stūmimą iš gimtojo krašto. Išspausdintas kazoko šūksnis: Ar tu lietuvė? Drožk į Rusiją! Kitoje kortelės pusėje mažu šriftu išspausdintas iliustracijos turinio paaiškinimas ir raginimas (pirmiausiai tikinčiųjų katalikų) priešintis valdžios planams. Anoniminis autorius nutyli, kad Rusijos vyriausybės pastangos buvo motyvuotos Sibiro kolonizavimo ir Transsibiro magistralės statybos (1891–1916) planų. Oponuojantys teiginiai argumentuoti daugiausia remiantis konfesinės ir tautinės savigynos pagrindu, dalyko dėstymas logiškas, parašytas gera lietuvių kalba. Jį greičiausiai sukūrė Maskvos universiteto teisės absolventas Vladas Mačys (1867–1936). Pirmą kartą šį leidinį mokslo tikslu 1929 m. bibliografiškai aprašė Lietuvos universiteto profesorius ir bibliotekos direktorius Vaclovas Biržiška. Autorius leidinį laikė atviruku, priskyrė M. Jankaus spaustuvei ir 1892 metams. Patikslintas aprašas paskelbtas fundamentaliame lietuvių nacionalinės bibliografijos veikale Lietuvos TSR bibliografija. Serija A: Knygos lietuvių kalba; t. 2: 1862–1904. Knyga 2 (Vilnius, 1988, p. 401, įrašo Nr. 4065). Jis rengtas tarybmečiu Lietuvos TSR knygų rūmų bibliografų, remtasi tuo metu vieninteliu žinomu Michailo J. Saltykovo-Ščedrino viešosios valstybinės bibliotekos Leningrade (nuo 1992 m. kovo – Rusijos nacionalinė biblioteka Sankt Peterburge) saugomu egzemplioriumi. The article is devoted to a peculiar episode of the struggle of Lithuanians against the policy of persecution based on nationality which was pursued by Imperial Russia between 1864 and 1904. Its participants were representatives of the parts of the Lithuanian nation separated by the border between Germany and the Russian Empire – Martynas Jankus (1858–1946), a German citizen, a Lithuanian of East Prussia, the owner of a printing office in Tilsit (Lith. Tilžė, currently Sovetsk, a town in Kaliningrad Oblast, the Russian Federation) and a group of Lithuanian young people who were operating illegally, a group of citizens of the Russian Empire. The time under discussion is the 1890s. During that period, the Lithuanian national movement was rapidly developing and strengthening while striving to bring together both parts of the nation and the USA-based Lithuanian diaspora community. One of the most important measures of the common struggle was the distribution of publications printed in Latin characters in the Lithuanian language which were banned to be published in the territory of Russia but were legally printed in East Prussia and smuggled across the border into Lithuania. From there, the publications were sent to Lithuanian communities all over the Russian Empire. This struggle resulted in victory: the ban was lifted by Order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Russia issued in 1904. To strengthen the political opposition, Lithuanian intellectuals printed not only books, brochures and newspapers but also various minor publications – political leaflets. Students of Russian universities and Lithuanian intellectuals graduates of these higher education institutions prepared texts and sent funds intended for their publication to the printing offices of Lithuanians and Germans in East Prussia. The number of such leaflets surviving to the present day is very small. One of these publications was an anonymous card of the size of a standard German postcard (95 x 140 mm). Thus far, three of them have been found in Lithuanian libraries and archives, and one has been discovered in the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. A composition of two illustrations is printed on one side of the card: a Lithuanian countrywoman and a Cossack standing in front of her with a raised whip and a bottle of vodka as a gift for obedience. This symbolised a spread of orthodoxy and the deportation of Lithuanians from their native land. The following exclamation of the Cossack is printed: Are you a Lithuanian? Go to Russia! The explanation of the content of the illustration and the encouragement (first of all, to Catholic believers) to oppose the plans of the authorities are printed in small characters. They are related to the colonisation of Siberia. The statements are well-grounded, the exposition of the subject is logical and written in the correct Lithuanian language. Most probably, it was created by the graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Moscow Vladas Mačys (1867–1936). Vaclovas Biržiška, Professor of Law at the University of Lithuania in Kaunas and Director of the University Library, was the first to describe this publication bibliographically. The author regarded this publication as a postcard, attributed it to Martynas Jankus’ printing office and dated it ‘1892’. A more precise description was publicised in the fundamental work of Lithuanian national bibliography Lietuvos TSR bibliografija. Serija A: Knygos lietuvių kalba (Bibliography of the Lithuanian SSR. Series A: Books in the Lithuanian Language; vol. 2: 1862–1904. Book 2 (Vilnius, 1988, p. 401, No. 4065). It was compiled in the Soviet era, and the only available copy stored in Mikhail J. Saltykov-Shchedrin State Public Library (currently renamed the Russian National Library in Sankt Petersburg) served as the basis for it. The present author amended the publication date of the postcard (1891) and specified the circumstances of its distribution, while also ascertaining that the artist of the illustrations was the lithographer of Tilsit Johann Mai. Atskleidžiama, kad internetas dažnai tampa aštrių polemikų ir informacinių karų erdve, kad čia tiesos pragmatiškai konstruojamos. Analizuojama ribinė Ukrainos ir Rusijos karo situacija, parodant, kad pėdsakų pėdsakai čia atveria šiurkščią, cinišką tikrovę, kuri išmuša iš kasdienybės vėžių ir pažadina iš malonios vartotojiško snūduriavimo būsenos atverdama nebūties grėsmę. This article discusses human existence in contemporary technological media culture, how new media affects a human worldview. The article analizes invisible technology control. It shows that humans are programmed in the new media world. Some needs and habits are installed into them. Using the algorithms of social networking companies, the line between privacy and publicity is disappearing and humans feel insecure. The article discusses toxic comunication related to falsifications, fake news. This text also shows how the human being exists in social networks, It discusses how young people watch reality shows on YouTube in which various stars and influencers try to show themselves. For them being means appearance. The article analyses how the internet becomes the field for intense and hot debates as well as for heated information wars in which truth is constructed for pragmatic purposes. The boundary situation of the war between Ukraine and Russia opens up a harsh and cynical reality which pushes us out of the comfort zone of consumeristic world and reveals the danger of non-existence.

Straipsnyje, didžia dalimi remiantis XIX a. – XX a. pirmos pusės Karaliaučiaus, Tilžės, Įsruties, Gumbinės ir jų apylinkių adresų knygomis ir žinutėmis periodinėje spaudoje, analizuojama Rytų Prūsijos šiaurinės dalies XIX a. – XX a. pirmos pusės koklių gamintojų istorija. Ypač išsamų vaizdą pavyko susidaryti apie Karaliaučiaus koklių fabrikų istorinę raidą ir savininkų kaitą, kadangi išliko didžioji dalis 1820–1942 m. laikotarpiu išleistų adresų knygų, kuriose galima rasti ne tik gyventojų pavardes ir adresus, bet ir duomenis apie miestiečių profesinę veiklą. Be to, adresų knygos visada buvo papildomos įmonių reklaminiais skelbimais, kuriuose labai dažnai užsimenama apie gamintos produkcijos pobūdį. Pavyko išaiškinti nemažai didesnių ir mažesnių regiono XIX a. – XX a. pirmos pusės koklių gamintojų. Karaliaučiuje minimu laikotarpiu jų įvardyta 25, iš jų 10 amatininkų dirbtuvių ir 15 fabrikų, kurių dalis minėti vos po kelerius metus. Tilžėje tokių įmonių išaiškinta 8 (iš jų 4 fabrikai ir 4 kitokio pobūdžio giminingos įmonės), Įsrutyje – 4 (iš jų 1 fabrikas ir 3 prekybos bei krosnių statybos įmonės, galimai gaminusios ir koklius). Taip pat nustatyta po vieną fabriką, veikusį Zekenburge Gumbinės apygardoje, Narkyčiuose Įsručio apskrityje bei Žilių gyvenvietės Norvilkiškių kaime. Kol iki galo nežinomi konkrečių fabrikų pajėgumai ir kiek plačiai buvo platinama jų produkcija, galime tik teigti, kad bent jau dalis jų tikrai buvo žinomi ir vertinami visoje Rytų Prūsijoje. Kai kurių fabrikų žinomumą patvirtina ir jų paminėjimas 1902 m., 1906 m. Vokietijos keramikos įmonių adresų knygose. Tarp tokių yra du didžiausi ir ilgiausiai veikę Karaliaučiuje: pirmasis – Jacobo Wesselio 1819 m. įkurtas ir iki XX a. pradžios jo verslo perėmėjų Kültzau ir kitų valdytas fabrikas ir antrasis – jo įkūrėjas Th. E. Kugelis, o veiklos išplėtotojas ir produkcijos kokybės įtvirtintojas Rudolfas Boy bei XIX a. pabaigos – XX a. pirmos pusės fabriko savininkas Wilhelmas Bonnas. Vokietijos fabrikų gretoje vietą rado ir po vieną Tilžės (savininkas Luisas Wiegandas) bei Įsručio (savininkas Friedrichas Gallmeisteris) fabriką. Išaiškinta didesnių ir mažesnių gamintojų gausa, tikėtina, leis ateities tyrimuose identifikuoti ir gamintos produkcijos paveldą (koklius, koklines krosnis, architektūros puošmenas, funkcinę įrangą ir kt.), kuris iki šiol labai menkai žinomas. This paper presents historical data about tile manufacturers in the northern part of East Prussia, collected from address books from the nineteenth- to the mid-twentieth-century from Königsberg, Tilsit, Insterburg, Gumbinnen, and the surrounding areas, mid-twentieth-century ceramics industry directories, and advertisements in German periodicals. The paper gives an account of activity periods of tile factories and workshops, their manufacturing sites, and the names of the owners. The data is expected to facilitate identification of tile products and their back-marking in future research efforts.

Per Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimus ir po jų XVIII–XIX amžių sandūroje Lietuvos elitas patyrė daug permainų: ėmė ryškėti takoskyra tarp Apšvietos idėjų šalininkų ir konservatyviosios aristokratijos. Pirmieji siekė reformų ir valstybės savarankiškumo bei visuomenės progreso. Antrieji nepalaikė pertvarkų ir siekė išsaugoti buvusią visuomenės sanklodą, neretai siekė Rusijos imperijos politikų paramos. Būtina tyrinėti ne tik to laikotarpio elito veiksmus politikos srityje, bet ir jų buitį bei gyvenimo būdą. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama, ką galima sužinoti apie veiksnius, galėjusius padaryti įtaką Liudviko Skumino Tiškevičiaus (1751–1808) – vieno svarbesnių XVIII–XIX amžių sandūros Lietuvos politinių veikėjų – sveikatai. Pagrindinis straipsnio herojus istoriografijoje vertintas kaip vienas iš konservatyvių pažiūrų didikų, didžiausią dėmesį skyręs savo materialinių gėrybių kaupimui. Darbe tiriama, kas žinoma apie grafo sveikatos sutrikimus. Taip pat aiškinamasi, kokie produktai buvo vartojami jo virtuvėje, kurie jo gyvenime egzistavę streso veiksniai galėjo padaryti įtaką jo sveikatai. Ludwik Skumin Tyszkiewicz (1751–1808), the last Grand Marshal of the Duchy of Lithuania and First Marshal of the Nobles of the Lithuanian Governorate in Tsarist Russia, was not known as a gifted politician. He supported the conservatives in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before the Third Partition in 1795, and he was among the nobles who were supported by Russia and who were fundamentally hostile to reforms and the Constitution of 3 May 1791. In the Russian Empire, he was quite loyal to the new government, with no higher ambitions. Contemporaries and historians often emphasised Skumin Tyszkiewicz’s pursuit of wealth and luxury as troubling. Could it have directly or indirectly influenced his health? The article deals with this issue. The main sources were the accounts of Tyszkiewicz’s Vilnius treasury and provincial estates, and other informative financial documents, which tell us about the nobleman’s diet and his purchases of medication. Tyszkiewicz’s personal and financial correspondence, his memoirs and his funeral sermon, were used as well. During the early period of his life, references to Tyszkiewicz’s health problems are not very numerous. In fact, they are rather fragmentary and unspecific. However, at the beginning of the 19th century, Tyszkiewicz’s health was seriously undermined, he suffered from gout and other health problems, and he very rarely left his Garodnia estate. Knowledge about the aristocrat’s kitchen is indeed plentiful. Meat was served in abundance: beef (which probably predominated), lamb, pork, turkey, chicken and goose meat were all used in Skumin Tyszkiewicz’s kitchen. In addition, we know that wild animals were served (hare, roe deer, beaver, elk), wild birds (hazel grouse, partridge, western capercaillie, black grouse, common snipe), and small birds (such as nightingale, Bohemian waxwing, and even European bee-eater). There was also no shortage of fish, both local (pike, perch, tench, eel, European cisco and others), and imported (sturgeon, anchovy, herring). The nobleman used eggs, local and imported cheeses, rye bread and wheat bread, and rice. There was no shortage of vegetables either (carrots, lettuce, parsley, dill, cabbage, kohlrabi, potatoes). Tyszkiewicz’s kitchen was full of spices (black peppers, allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg). Chocolate, coffee, cream, sugar and honey were used as well. We also know quite a lot about local and imported alcohol for the nobleman: Burgundy, Hungarian wines, Champagne, regular and strong beer, porter, English ale, and French and cinnamon vodka. It can be concluded from the accounts that he consumed a lot of alcohol, especially beer. Research into the diet of his last year shows that although he used alcoholic beverages, sugar and a large quantity of flour dishes, Tyszkiewicz’s diet really did not lack healthy products, such as vegetables, greens, lean meat and fish. His death, however, was hardly unexpected, according to the memoirs of his daughter Anna Potocka. Presenting the results of the autopsy in his memoirs, Joseph Frank wrote that Skumin Tyszkiewicz must have felt unwell, as he was found with a completely ossified aorta, huge kidney stones and stony lung calcifications, a consequence of gout. It is difficult to judge whether the pursuit of luxury and abundant consumption led to the death of Skumin Tyszkiewicz. He lived as was usual in his epoch. The lifestyles of many other nobles were hardly different. But a deeper comparative analysis, requiring future research, may answer this question.
