Search

Statistical analyses based on the spatial correlation between the sky maps of Gravitational Wave (GW) events and the positions of potential host environments are a powerful tool to infer the origin of the black hole binary mergers that have been detected by the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA instruments. In this paper, we tighten our previous constraints on the fraction of detected GW events that may have originated from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We consider 159 mergers detected not later than June 1st, 2024, and the all-sky quasar catalogue Quaia. We increase by a factor of 5.3 and 114 the number of considered GW sources and AGN respectively, also extending our analysis from redshift 0.3 to 1.5. This is possible thanks to the uniformity of the AGN catalogue and its high level of completeness, which we estimate as a function of redshift and luminosity. We find at a 95 per cent credibility level that un-obscured AGN with a bolometric luminosity higher than $10^{44.5}{\rm erg\ s}^{-1}$ ($10^{45}{\rm erg\ s}^{-1}$) do not contribute to more than the 21 (11) per cent of the detected GW events., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) are stars which have been ejected from the Galactic Centre (GC) at velocities of up to a few thousand km/s. They are tracers of the Galactic potential and can be used to infer properties of the GC, such as the initial-mass function and assembly history. HVSs are rare, however, with only about a dozen promising candidates discovered so far. In this work we make use of a novel, highly efficient method to identify new HVS candidates in Gaia. This method uses the nearly radial trajectories of HVSs to infer their distances and velocities based on their position and Gaia proper motion alone. Through comparison of inferred distances with Gaia parallaxes and photometry we identified 600 HVS candidates with G<20 including the previously discovered S5-HVS1, out of which we obtained ground-based follow-up observations for 196 stars. As we found no new HVSs based on their radial velocity, we used detailed HVS ejection simulations to significantly improve previous HVS ejection rate constraints. In particular, the ejection rate of HVSs more massive than 1 $\mathrm{M_\odot}$ cannot be higher than $10^{-5}$ yr$^{-1}$ at $2\sigma$ significance. Additionally, we predict that there are 5-45 unbound HVSs in the complete Gaia catalogue ($1\sigma$ interval), most of which will be main-sequence stars of a few M$_\odot$ at heliocentric distances of tens to hundreds of kpc. By comparing our results to literature HVS candidates, we find an indication of either a time-dependent ejection rate of HVSs or a non-GC origin of previously identified HVS candidates., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The primary formation channel for the stellar-mass Binary Black Holes which have been detected merging by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration is yet to be discerned. One of the main obstacles is that such Gravitational Wave (GW) events are not in general expected to produce an Electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. This might not be the case if the mergers happen in gaseous environments, such as the accretion discs of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Recently, 20 AGN flares detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility have been investigated as potential counterparts of GW events by Graham et al. (2023). We present a new spatial correlation analysis involving such events that uses the up-to-date posterior samples of 78 mergers detected during the third observing run of the LVK collaboration. We apply a likelihood method which takes into account the exact position of the EM signal within the 3D sky map of the GW events. We find that current data favour the hypothesis of no causal connection between the detected mergers and the AGN flares. We place an upper limit of 0.155 at a 90 per cent credibility level on the fraction of coalescences that are physically related to a flare. Moreover, we show that the mass distribution of the merging binaries that appear in coincidence with AGN flares, characterised by values typically larger than the ones of the full population of GW events, is also consistent with the no-connection hypothesis. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is the first scientific endeavour to detect and study gravitational waves from space. LISA will survey the sky for Gravitational Waves in the 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz frequency band which will enable the study of a vast number of objects ranging from Galactic binaries and stellar mass black holes in the Milky Way, to distant massive black-hole mergers and the expansion of the Universe. The Gaia mission has provided us full astrometric solutions for over 1.5B sources. However, only the brightest 34M of those have radial velocity measurements. As a proof of concept, this paper aims to close that gap, by obtaining radial velocity estimates from the low-resolution BP/RP spectra that Gaia now provides. These spectra are currently published for about 220M sources, with this number increasing to the full $\sim 2$B Gaia sources with Gaia Data Release 4. To obtain the radial velocity measurements, we fit Gaia BP/RP spectra with models based on a grid of synthetic spectra, with which we obtain the posterior probability on the radial velocity for each object. Our measured velocities show systematic biases that depend mainly on colours and magnitudes of stars. We correct for these effects by using external catalogues of radial velocity measurements. We present in this work a catalogue of about 6.4M sources with our most reliable radial velocity measurements and uncertainties $<300$ km s$^{-1}$ obtained from the BP/RP spectra. About 23% of these have no previous radial velocity measurement in Gaia RVS. Furthermore, we provide an extended catalogue containing all 125M sources for which we were able to obtain radial velocity measurements. The latter catalogue, however, also contains a fraction of measurements for which the reported radial velocities and uncertainties are inaccurate. Although typical uncertainties in the catalogue are significantly higher compared to those obtained with precision spectroscopy instruments, the number of potential sources for which this method can be applied is orders of magnitude higher than any previous radial velocity catalogue. These equations appear in models devoted to population dynamics or to epidemiology, for instance.

Despite the increasing number of Gravitational Wave (GW) detections, the astrophysical origin of Binary Black Hole (BBH) mergers remains elusive. A promising formation channel for BBHs is inside accretion discs around supermassive black holes, that power Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In this paper, we test for the first time the spatial correlation between observed GW events and AGN. To this end, we assemble all sky catalogues with 1,412 (242) AGN with a bolometric luminosity greater than $10^{45.5} {\rm erg\ s}^{-1}$ ($10^{46}\,{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}$) with spectroscopic redshift of $z\leq0.3$ from the Milliquas catalogue, version 7.7b. These AGN are cross-matched with localisation volumes of BBH mergers observed in the same redshift range by the LIGO and Virgo interferometers during their first three observing runs. We find that the fraction of the detected mergers originated in AGN brighter than $10^{45.5}\,{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}$ ($10^{46}\,{\rm erg\,s}^{-1}$) cannot be higher than $0.49$ ($0.17$) at a 95 per cent credibility level. Our upper limits imply a limited BBH merger production efficiency of the brightest AGN, while most or all GW events may still come from lower luminosity ones. Alternatively, the AGN formation path for merging stellar-mass BBHs may be actually overall subdominant in the local Universe. We consider a scenario in which Sgr A* is in a massive black hole binary (MBHB) with an as-of-yet undetected supermassive or intermediate-mass black hole companion. Dynamical encounters between this MBHB and single stars in its immediate vicinity would eject hypervelocity stars (HVSs) with velocities beyond the Galactic escape velocity. In this work, we use existing HVS observations to constrain for the first time the existence of a companion to Sgr A*. We simulate the ejection of HVSs via the `MBHB slingshot' scenario and show that the population of HVSs detectable today depends strongly on the companion mass and the separation of the MBHB. We demonstrate that the lack of uncontroversial HVS candidates in \textit{Gaia} Data Release 3 places a firm upper limit on the mass of a possible Sgr A* companion. Within one milliparsec of Sgr A*, our results exclude a companion more massive than $1000 \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$. If Sgr A* recently merged with a companion black hole, our findings indicate that unless this companion was less massive than $500 \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$, this merger must have occurred at least $10$ Myr ago. We present a unified framework ensuring well posedness and providing stability estimates to a class of Initial Boundary Value Problems for renewal equations comprising a variety of biological or epidemiological models. This versatility is achieved considering fairly general -- possibly non linear and/or non local -- interaction terms, allowing both low regularity assumptions and independent variables with or without a boundary. In particular, these results also apply, for instance, to a model for the spreading of a Covid like pandemic or other epidemics. In this work, we investigate the effect of gravitational lensing on the gravitational wave (GW) signals of a population of tidal disruption events (TDEs). We estimate the number of lensed-magnified signals that we expect to detect with future space-based GW observatories, in particular LISA and DECIGO. We model the lens distribution using an hybrid approach that combines semi-analytic methods with numerical results from ray tracing simulations. We divide the TDE population in two classes, nuclear TDEs (main sequence stars tidally disrupted by massive black holes in the cores of galaxies) and globular TDEs (white dwarfs tidally disrupted by intermediate mass black holes in globular clusters). We find that, even considering the effect of lensing, LISA will not be able to observe any TDEs, while DECIGO could detect $\sim$16 strongly lensed ($\mu>2$) globular TDEs and $\sim$135 strongly lensed nuclear TDEs, over an observational period of 10 years. Our results reveal the role that lensing will play in future deci-Hertz GW observatories, indicating exciting multi-messenger opportunities with TDEs but at same time signalling the need to develop adequate data analysis techniques to correctly reconstruct the astrophysical properties of the source., Comment: accepted for publication on MNRAS. 11 pages, 8 figures

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. In this paper we consider optimal control problems for a parabolic system modeling a therapy, based on oncolytic viruses, for the glioma brain cancer. Using several techniques typical of functional analysis, we prove the global in time well posedness of the control model, the existence of optimal controls for specific objective functionals, which are natural for cancer therapies, and we derive necessary conditions for optimality.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will unveil the non-transient gravitational wave sky full of inspiralling stellar-mass compact binaries within the Local Universe. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is expected to be prominent on the LISA sky due to its proximity and its large population of double white dwarfs (DWD). Here we present the first dedicated study of the LMC with gravitational wave sources. We assemble three LMC models based on: (1) the density distribution and star formation history from optical wavelength observations, (2) a detailed hydrodynamic simulation, and (3) combining the two. Our models yield a hundred to several hundred detectable DWDs: indeed, the LMC will be a resolved galaxy in the LISA sky. Importantly, amongst these we forecast a few tens to a hundred double degenerate supernovae type Ia progenitors, a class of binaries which have never been unambiguously observed. The range in the number of detections is primarily due to differences in the LMC total stellar mass and recent star formation in our models. Our results suggest that the total number, periods, and chirp masses of LISA sources may provide independent constraints on both LMC stellar mass and recent star formation by comparing LISA observations with the models, although such constraints will be highly model-dependent. The third data release (DR3) of the European Space Agency satellite Gaia provides coordinates, parallaxes, proper motions, and radial velocities for a sample of $\sim 34$ million stars. We use the combined 6-dimensional phase space information to search for hypervelocity stars (HVSs), unbound stars accelerated by dynamical processes happening in the Galactic Centre. By looking at the kinematics of Gaia DR3 stars in Galactocentric coordinates and by integrating their orbits in the Galactic potential, we do not identify any HVS candidates with a velocity higher than $700$ km s$^{-1}$ and robustly observed kinematics. Assuming a scenario wherein the interaction between a stellar binary and the massive black hole Sgr A$^*$ is responsible for HVS ejections from the Galactic Centre, we derive degenerate limits on the ejection rate of HVSs and the slope of the initial mass function of the primary star among binaries in the Galactic Centre. Our results indicate that the HVS ejection rate is $\lesssim 8\times10^{-5}$ yr$^{-1}$ assuming a Salpeter mass function, and this upper limit becomes progressively smaller for an increasingly top-heavy mass distribution. A fiducial HVS ejection rate of $10^{-4}$ yr$^{-1}$ prefers a mass function slope $\lesssim -2.35$, disfavouring previously claimed top-heavy initial mass functions among stars in the Galactic Centre., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A dynamical encounter between a stellar binary and Sgr A* in the Galactic Centre (GC) can tidally separate the binary and eject one member with a velocity beyond the escape speed of the Milky Way. These hypervelocity stars (HVSs) can offer insight into the stellar populations in the GC environment. In a previous work, our simulations showed that the lack of main sequence HVS candidates with precise astrometric uncertainties and radial velocities in current data releases from the \textit{Gaia} space mission places a robust upper limit on the ejection rate of HVSs from the GC of $3\times10^{-2} \, \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$. We improve this constraint in this work by additionally considering the absence of post main sequence HVSs in \textit{Gaia} Early Data Release 3 as well the existence of the HVS candidate S5-HVS1. This evidence offers degenerate joint constraints on the HVS ejection rate and the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in the GC. For a top-heavy GC IMF as suggested by recent works, our modelling motivates an HVS ejection rate of $\eta=0.7_{-0.5}^{+1.5} \times10^{-4} \, \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$. This preferred ejection rate can be as large as $10^{-2} \, \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ for a very top-light IMF and as low as 10$^{-4.5} \, \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ if the IMF is extremely top-heavy. The origin of the Binary Black Hole (BBH) mergers detected through Gravitational Waves (GWs) by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration remains debated. One fundamental reason is our ignorance of their host environment, as the typical size of an event's localization volume can easily contain thousands of galaxies. A strategy around this is to exploit statistical approaches to assess the spatial correlation between these mergers and astrophysically motivated host galaxy types, such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We use a Likelihood ratio method to infer the degree of GW-AGN connection out to $z=0.2$. We simulate BBH mergers whose components' masses are sampled from a realistic distribution of the underlying population of Black Holes (BHs). Localization volumes for these events are calculated assuming two different interferometric network configurations. These correspond to the configuration of the third (O3) and of the upcoming fourth (O4) LVK observing runs. We conclude that the 13 BBH mergers detected during the third observing run at $z\leq0.2$ are not enough to reject with a \(3\sigma\) significance the hypothesis according to which there is no connection between GW and AGN more luminous than $\approx 10^{44.3}\rm{erg}\ \rm{s}^{-1}$, that have number density higher than \(10^{-4.75}\textrm{Mpc}^{-3}\). However, 13 detections are enough to reject this no-connection hypothesis when rarer categories of AGN are considered, with bolometric luminosities greater than $\approx 10^{45.5}\rm{erg}\ \rm{s}^{-1}$. We predict and compare the distributions and properties of hyper-velocity stars (HVSs) ejected from the centres of the Milky Way (MW) and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In our model, HVSs are ejected at a constant rate -- equal in both galaxies -- via the Hills mechanism and are propagated in a combined potential, where the LMC orbits the MW on its first infall. By selecting $m>2\, \mathrm{M_\odot}$ HVSs well-separated from the Magellanic Clouds and Galactic midplane, we identify mock HVSs which would stand out from ordinary stars in the stellar halo in future data releases from the Gaia satellite and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We find that in these deep surveys, LMC HVSs will outnumber MW ones by a factor $\sim 2.5$, as HVSs can more easily escape from the shallower potential of the LMC. At an assumed HVS ejection rate of $10^{-4} \, \mathrm{yr^{-1}}$, HVSs detectable in the final Gaia data release and LSST from the LMC (MW) will number $125_{-12}^{+11}$ ($50_{-8}^{+7}$) and $140_{-11}^{+10}$ ($42_{-7}^{+6}$), respectively. The MW and LMC HVS populations show different kinematics and spatial distributions. While LMC HVSs have more modest total velocities and larger Galactocentric distances clustered around those of the LMC itself, HVSs from the MW show broader distributions, including a prominent high-velocity tail above $500 \, \mathrm{km \ s^{-1}}$ that contains at least half of the stars. These predictions are robust against reasonable variation of the Galactic potential and of the LMC central black hole mass., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

One of the most promising tracers of the Galactic potential in the halo region are stellar streams. However, individual stream fits can be limited by systematic biases. To study these individual stream systematics, we fit streams in Milky Way-like galaxies from FIRE cosmological galaxy formation simulations with an analytic gravitational potential by maximizing the clustering of stream stars in action space. We show that for coherent streams the quality of the constraints depends on the orbital phase of the observed stream stars, despite the fact that the phase information is discarded in action-clustering methods. Streams on intermediate phases give the most accurate results, whereas pericentre streams can be highly biased. This behaviour is tied to the amount of correlation present between positions and momenta in each stream's data: weak correlation in pericentre streams prohibits efficient differentiation between potentials, while strong correlation in intermediate streams promotes it. Although simultaneous fitting of multiple streams is generally prescribed as the remedy to combat individual stream biases, we find that combining multiple pericentric streams is not enough to yield a bias-free result. We finally show that adopting the two-component St\"ackel model does not fundamentally induce a biased mass estimate. With our full data set of two multi-wrap streams, we recovered the true rotation curve of the simulated galaxy within $12\%$ over the entire range of radii covered by our set of stars (10 - 176 kpc) and within $6.5\%$ between the 5 and 95-percentile distance range (23 - 109 kpc)., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. Context. As the importance of Gravitational Wave (GW) Astrophysics increases rapidly, astronomers in different fields and with different backgrounds can have the need to get a quick idea of which GW source populations can be detected by which detectors and with what measurement uncertainties. Aims. The GW-Toolbox is an easy-to-use, flexible tool to simulate observations on the GW universe with different detectors, including ground-based interferometers (advanced LIGO, advanced VIRGO, KAGRA, Einstein Telescope, and also customised designs), space-borne interferometers (LISA and a customised design), pulsar timing arrays mimicking the current working ones (EPTA, PPTA, NANOGrav, IPTA) and future ones. We include a broad range of sources such as mergers of stellar mass compact objects, namely black holes, neutron stars and black hole-neutron stars; and supermassive black hole binaries mergers and inspirals, Galactic double white dwarfs in ultra-compact orbit, extreme mass ratio inspirals and Stochastic GW backgrounds. Methods. We collect methods to simulate source populations and determine their detectability with the various detectors. The paper aims at giving a comprehensive description on the algorithm and functionality of the GW-Toolbox. Results. The GW-Toolbox produces results that are consistent with more detailed calculations of the different source classes and can be accessed with a website interface (gw-universe.org) or as a python package (https://bitbucket.org/radboudradiolab/gwtoolbox). We estimate the rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs) that will be detectable with future gravitational wave detectors as well as the most probable properties of these events and their possible electromagnetic counterpart. To this purpose we combine standard gravitational waves and electromagnetic results with detailed rates estimates. We find that the \emph{Laser Interferometer Space Antenna} (LISA) should not detect any TDEs, unless black holes (BHs) are typically embedded by a young stellar population which, in this situation, could lead up to few 10 events during the duration of the mission. If there are gravitational wave observations, these events should also be observable in the X-ray or the optical/UV part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which may open up the multi-messenger era for TDEs. The generation of detectors following LISA will at least yearly observe $10^4$ TDEs at cosmological distances, allowing to do population studies and constrain the black hole mass function. In all cases, most probable events should be around black holes with a mass such that the Keplerian frequency at the Schwarzschild radius is similar to the optimal frequency of the detector and with a large penetration factor., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

We present a multilane traffic model based on balance laws, where the nonlocal source term is used to describe the lane changing rate. The modelling framework includes the consideration of local and nonlocal flux functions. Based on a Godunov type numerical scheme, we provide BV estimates and a discrete entropy inequality. Together with the $L^1$-contractivity property, we prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions. Numerical examples show the nonlocal impact compared to local flux functions and local sources.

We describe how the various outcomes of stellar tidal disruption give rise to observable radiation. We separately consider the cases where gas circularizes rapidly into an accretion disc, as well as the case when shocked debris streams provide the observable emission without having fully circularized. For the rapid circularization case, we describe how outflows, absorption by reprocessing layers, and Comptonization can cause the observed radiation to depart from that of a bare disc, possibly giving rise to the observed optical/UV emission along with soft X-rays from the disc. If, instead, most of the debris follows highly eccentric orbits for a significant time, many properties of the observed optical/UV emission can be explained by the scale of those eccentric orbits and the shocks embedded in the debris flow near orbital apocenter. In this picture, soft X-ray emission at early times results from the smaller amount of debris mass deflected into a compact accretion disc by weak shocks near the stellar pericenter. A general proposal for the near-constancy of the ultraviolet/optical color temperatures is provided, by linking it to incomplete thermalization of radiation in the atmosphere of the emitting region. We focus on both the signal emitted by main sequence stars disrupted by super-massive black holes (SMBHs) in galaxy nuclei, and on that from disruptions of white dwarfs by intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) located in globular clusters. We show that the characteristic strain $h_{\rm c}$'s dependence on frequency is shaped by the pericenter distribution of events within the tidal radius, and under standard assumptions $h_{\rm c} \propto f^{-1/2}$. This is because the TDE signal is a burst of gravitational waves at the orbital frequency of the closest approach. In addition, we compare the background characteristic strains with the sensitivity curves of the upcoming generation of space-based gravitational wave interferometers: the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), TianQin, ALIA, the DECI-hertz inteferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) and the Big Bang Observer (BBO). We find that the background produced by main sequence stars might be just detected by BBO in its lowest frequency coverage, but it is too weak for all the other instruments. On the other hand, the background signal from TDEs with white dwarfs will be within reach of ALIA, and especially of DECIGO and BBO, while it is below the LISA and TianQin sensitive curves. This background signal detection will not only provide evidence for the existence of IMBHs up to redshift $z\sim 3$, but it will also inform us on the number of globular clusters per galaxy and on the occupation fraction of IMBHs in these environments., Comment: Accepted for Publications in MNRAS. 11 pages, 5 figures

Stream stars removed by tides from their progenitor satellite galaxy or globular cluster act as a group of test particles on neighboring orbits, probing the gravitational field of the Milky Way. While constraints from individual streams have been shown to be susceptible to biases, combining several streams from orbits with various distances reduces these biases. We fit a common gravitational potential to multiple stellar streams simultaneously by maximizing the clustering of the stream stars in action space. We apply this technique to members of the GD-1, Pal 5, Orphan and Helmi streams, exploiting both the individual and combined data sets. We describe the Galactic potential with a St\"ackel model, and vary up to five parameters simultaneously. We find that we can only constrain the enclosed mass, and that the strongest constraints come from the GD-1, Pal 5 and Orphan streams whose combined data set yields $M(< 20\ \mathrm{kpc}) = 2.96^{+0.25}_{-0.26} \times 10^{11} \ M_{\odot}$. When including the Helmi stream in the data set, the mass uncertainty increases to $M(< 20\ \mathrm{kpc}) = 3.12^{+3.21}_{-0.46} \times 10^{11} \ M_{\odot}$., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures. Several stars detected moving at velocities near to or exceeding the Galactic escape speed likely originated in the Milky Way disc. We quantitatively explore the `binary supernova scenario' hypothesis, wherein these `hyper-runaway' stars are ejected at large peculiar velocities when their close, massive binary companions undergo a core-collapse supernova and the binary is disrupted. We perform an extensive suite of binary population synthesis simulations evolving massive systems to determine the assumptions and parameters which most impact the ejection rate of fast stars. In a simulation tailored to eject fast stars, we find the most likely hyper-runaway star progenitor binary is composed of a massive ($\sim$$30\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$) primary and a $\sim$$3-4\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ companion on an orbital period that shrinks to $\lesssim$1 day prior to the core collapse following a common envelope phase. The black hole remnant formed from the primary must receive a natal kick $\gtrsim$1000 $\mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ to disrupt the binary and eject the companion at a large velocity. We compare the fast stars produced in these simulations to a contemporary census of early-type Milky Way hyper-runaway star candidates. We find that these rare objects may be produced in sufficient number only when poorly-constrained binary evolution parameters related to the strength of post-core collapse remnant natal kicks and common envelope efficiency are adjusted to values currently unsupported -- but not excluded -- by the literature. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are among the brightest transients in the optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray sky. These flares are set into motion when a star is torn apart by the tidal field of a massive black hole, triggering a chain of events which is -- so far -- incompletely understood. However, the disruption process has been studied extensively for almost half a century, and unlike the later stages of a TDE, our understanding of the disruption itself is reasonably well converged. In this Chapter, we review both analytical and numerical models for stellar tidal disruption. Starting with relatively simple, order-of-magnitude physics, we review models of increasing sophistication, the semi-analytic ``affine formalism,'' hydrodynamic simulations of the disruption of polytropic stars, and the most recent hydrodynamic results concerning the disruption of realistic stellar models. Our review surveys the immediate aftermath of disruption in both typical and more unusual TDEs, exploring how the fate of the tidal debris changes if one considers non-main sequence stars, deeply penetrating tidal encounters, binary star systems, and sub-parabolic orbits. We develop a time and space dependent predator-prey model. The predators' equation is a non local hyperbolic balance law, while the diffusion of prey obeys a parabolic equation, so that predators "hunt" for prey, while prey diffuse. A control term allows to describe the use of predators as parasitoids to limit the growth of prey-parasites. The general well posedness and stability results here obtained ensure the existence of optimal pest control strategies, as discussed through some numerical integrations. The specific example we have in mind is that of Trichopria drosophilae used to fight against the spreading of Drosophila suzukii.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will enable Galactic gravitational wave (GW) astronomy by individually resolving $ > 10^4$ signals from double white dwarf (DWD) binaries throughout the Milky Way. In this work we assess for the first time the potential of LISA data to map the Galactic stellar bar and spiral arms, since GWs are unaffected by stellar crowding and dust extinction unlike optical observations of the bulge region. To achieve this goal we combine a realistic population of Galactic DWDs with a high-resolution N-Body simulation a galaxy in good agreement with the Milky Way. We then model GW signals from our synthetic DWD population and reconstruct the structure of the simulated Galaxy from mock LISA observations. Our results show that while the low signal contrast between the background disc and the spiral arms hampers our ability to characterise the spiral structure, the stellar bar will instead clearly appear in the GW map of the bulge. The bar length and bar width derived from these synthetic observations are underestimated, respectively within $1\sigma$ and at a level greater than $2\sigma$, but the resulting axis ratio agrees to well within $1\sigma$, while the viewing angle is recovered to within one degree. These are competitive constraints compared to those from electromagnetic tracers, and they are obtained with a completely independent method. Tidal disruption events occur rarely in any individual galaxy. Over the last decade, however, time-domain surveys have begun to accumulate statistical samples of these flares. What dynamical processes are responsible for feeding stars to supermassive black holes? At what rate are stars tidally disrupted in realistic galactic nuclei? What may we learn about supermassive black holes and broader astrophysical questions by estimating tidal disruption event rates from observational samples of flares? We study the dynamical evolution of eccentric massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) interacting with unbound stars by means of an extensive set of three body scattering experiments. Compared to previous studies, we extend the investigation down to a MBHB mass ratio of $q=m_2/m_1=10^{-4}$, where $m_1$ and $m_2$ are the masses of the primary and secondary hole respectively. Contrary to a simple extrapolation from higher mass ratios, we find that for $q\lesssim 10^{-3}$ the eccentricity growth rate becomes negative, i.e., the binary {\it circularises} as it shrinks. This behaviour is due to the subset of interacting stars captured in metastable counter-rotating orbits; those stars tend to extract angular momentum from the binary, promoting eccentricity growth for $q>10^{-3}$, but tend to inject angular momentum into the binary driving it towards circularisation for $q<10^{-3}$. The physical origin of this behaviour requires a detailed study of the orbits of this subset of stars and is currently under investigation. We explore the prospects for the detection of giant circumbinary exoplanets and brown dwarfs (BDs) orbiting Galactic double white dwarfs binaries (DWDs) with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). By assuming an occurrence rate of 50%, motivated by white dwarf pollution observations, we built a Galactic synthetic population of P-type giant exoplanets and BDs orbiting DWDs. We carried this out by injecting different sub-stellar populations, with various mass and orbital separation characteristics, into the DWD population used in the LISA mission proposal. We then performed a Fisher matrix analysis to measure how many of these three-body systems show a periodic Doppler-shifted gravitational wave perturbation detectable by LISA. We report the number of circumbinary planets (CBPs) and (BDs) that can be detected by LISA for various combinations of mass and semi-major axis distributions. We identify pessimistic and optimistic scenarios corresponding, respectively, to 3 and 83 (14 and 2218) detections of CBPs (BDs), observed during the length of the nominal LISA mission. These detections are distributed all over the Galaxy following the underlying DWD distribution, and they are biased towards DWDs with higher LISA signal-to-noise ratio and shorter orbital period. Finally, we show that if LISA were to be extended for four more years, the number of systems detected will be more than doubled in both the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. Our results present promising prospects for the detection of post-main sequence exoplanets and BDs, showing that gravitational waves can prove the existence of these populations over the totality of the Milky Way. We prove the well-posedness of a system of balance laws inspired by [8], describing macro-scopically the traffic flow on a multi-lane road network. Motivated by real applications, we allow for the the presence of space discontinuities both in the speed law and in the number of lanes. This allows to describe a number of realistic situations. Existence of solutions follows from compactness results on a sequence of Godunov's approximations, while $L^1$-stability is obtained by the doubling of variables technique. Some numerical simulations illustrate the behaviour of solutions in sample cases.

LISA will open the mHz band of gravitational waves (GWs) to the astronomy community. The strong gravity which powers the variety of GW sources in this band is also crucial in a number of important astrophysical processes at the current frontiers of astronomy. These range from the beginning of structure formation in the early universe, through the origin and cosmic evolution of massive black holes in concert with their galactic environments, to the evolution of stellar remnant binaries in the Milky Way and in nearby galaxies. These processes and their associated populations also drive current and future observations across the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. We review opportunities for science breakthroughs, involving either direct coincident EM+GW observations, or indirect multimessenger studies. We argue that for the US community to fully capitalize on the opportunities from the LISA mission, the US efforts should be accompanied by a coordinated and sustained program of multi-disciplinary science investment, following the GW data through to its impact on broad areas of astrophysics. In this paper, we focus on finite volume approximation schemes to solve a non-local material flow model in two space dimensions. Based on the numerical discretisation with dimensional splitting, we prove the convergence of the approximate solutions, where the main difficulty arises in the treatment of the discontinuity occurring in the flux function. In particular, we compare a Roe-type scheme to the well-established Lax-Friedrichs method and provide a numerical study highlighting the benefits of the Roe discretisation. Besides, we also prove the L1-Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial datum, ensuring the uniqueness of the solution.
