If we trace masterpieces by Rossetti "from Dante", we can observe that the most part remains in British or North American collections, although we had in mind that museums of the whole world would have got such emblematic items. Why? Dante was definitely popular in Great-Britain, so that it was quite easy for Rossetti to negotiate his works, and no doubt that the emerging speculative collecting for businessmen did limit sales to a short panel of wealthy rivals who took advantage of museums' hesitations about Pre-Raphaelitism — as well as foreign critics focused on Rossetti a bit too late, when his works were already in the English acquisitions field. That's why the current location of the Rossetti's "Dante pictures" deals not only with Victorian fantasies but also with the evolution of art market by the second part of the 19th century.

The Greeks were not a unified nation in the modern sense, confined to a territory centralized in Attica or the Peloponnese. Instead, they were a collection of independent city-states (poleis) spread across the Mediterranean, from the Iberian Peninsula to the Black Sea. The intense commercial relationships among these Greek settlements and with other peoples wove a Mediterranean cultural web that fostered a genuine spirit of intercultural exchange, leading to a new cultural synthesis that gave the Greeks – and the world to this day – an extraordinary drive for originality. This technical culture, which Rossetti calls the “cultura dell’attendibilità,” was based on observation, objectivity, and rationality. Without these principles, and relying solely on myth, seafaring could never have flourished. This shift away from myths to a new culture is testified by Xenophanes, who, in DK B 18 (LM D53), contrasts the ancient method of gaining knowledge through communication with the gods with a new method of research that in time yields better results.

The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive overview of the contributions made by Livio Rossetti to the methodologies of inquiry into ancient philosophical thought, with a specific focus on the hermeneutical tools he has developed over the course of his extensive research activity. This article will examine, in particular, the concept of “virtual philosophy” and of other “tools of the trade,” which the scholar has further refined within his latest book, Ripensare i presocratici.

Introduction: Fundoplication sleeve gastrectomy (FSG) is a novel bariatric procedure that combines anti-reflux fundoplication with sleeve gastrectomy (SG) to simultaneously address gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and obesity. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the prevalence of postoperative GERD and amount of weight loss after FSG. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science Core Collection in May 2023 for full-text reports of case series, registries, cohort studies, and randomized clinical trials that reported postoperative GERD and percent excess weight loss (%EWL) after FSG for patients with preoperative GERD and obesity, excluding reports including patients with previous history of bariatric procedures. We used random effects models to estimate postoperative GERD prevalence and %EWL. Risk of bias and evidence quality were assessed with the ROBINS-I and GRADE frameworks (PROSPERO CRD42023420067). Results: Of the 935 records initially identified, 13 studies from 8 countries met our inclusion criteria. The prevalence of postoperative GERD pooled from 418 patients was 4.8% (95% CI: 2.8 to 8.4%). Pooled %EWL, available for 225 patients from 7 studies, was 67.8% (95% CI: 55.2 to 80.5). The overall quality of evidence was low, largely due to observational study design, lack of blinded outcome assessment, and evidence of publication bias. Conclusion: Fundoplication sleeve gastrectomy is an emerging surgical approach for patients with obesity and GERD with promising initial outcomes. El reflujo gastroesofágico que se sale de los parámetros fisiológicos es una enfermedad crónica y recurrente que no se cura con el tratamiento médico; éste logra disminuir los síntomas y, junto con el mejoramiento de la calidad de vida, mantiene al paciente en mejores condiciones de supervivencia. Es necesario realizar en los pacientes con reflujo una serie de estudios que nos llevan a clasificar la complejidad del problema y, en esa clasificación, evaluar la posibilidad de cirugía, estableciendo claramente que cualquier procedimiento que se realice debe sopesarse con los riesgos que implica. Los pacientes de edad y sin un reflujo complicado ameritan tratamiento médico. Por el contrario, en los enfermos jóvenes en quienes la expectativa de vida es grande, y el tomar drogas por largos períodos de tiempo no se justifica, además de que la enfermedad tiene grandes posibilidades de recurrir o complicarse, se debe plantear el tratamiento quirúrgico. Se presenta nuestra experiencia de grupo, con más de 100 pacientes intervenidos en los 2 últimos años con la técnica laparoscópica, teniendo hasta el momento seguimiento completo en 50 de ellos. Se muestra nuestro protocolo de manejo y la experiencia adquirida, y se considera que la cirugía laparoscópica ha revolucionado el concepto sobre la cirugía "para la hernia hiatal y el reflujo gastroesofágico", al brindar con mínima invasión, resultados muy alentadores y mejoría del 90% de los enfermos.

The most commonly recited anecdote regarding Dante Gabriel Rossetti recalls the incident surrounding the burial of his bound manuscript of poetry in 1862 alongside his wife Elizabeth Siddal. Buried in an act of contrition encouraged by his brother, the manuscript was retrieved from the exhumed coffin at Rossetti's behest in 1869 by his friend Charles Augustus Howell and returned to the poet in a severe state of decay and smelling of disinfectant. Three of the poems recovered would famously form an integral part of the 1870 Poems. This essay situates Rossetti's action in undertaking the exhumation as a trope for the way his poetry consistently revisits and reconfigures conceptualisations of life and death, often with regards to physical and spiritual embodiment. Without seeking to offer ethical justification for Rossetti's actions in retrieving his poems, I will focus rather on the ways in which his poetic vision is dominated by the language of exile and return, of burial and retrieval, and how these twin concerns are manifest in the poems of the little green book. These three long poems, which it appears he was most eager to recover through the distasteful act, are identified collectively as 'the exhumation poems': 'Dante at Verona', 'A Last Confession', and 'Jenny'. This article explores the connections between two Pre-Raphaelite women: Christina Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal. Although they are remembered quite differently, the former as a celebrated poet, the latter as the eternal model, both women share common sufferings and artistic themes. In bringing them forth, the article aims to shed light on how Victorian society may have impacted their life and work. The accuracy of various reports of frailty and poor health regarding the artists is inspected. The article ponder on why Siddal’s artistic output lingers in the shadows, while recognizing the influence of the class system and of gender roles on the lives of these women. This task is achieved through an analysis of selected works which display some of the artists’ central motifs. To conclude, the article assesses the societal restrictions which pervade the works of Rossetti and Siddal, how they attempt to bend or bypass them, and in which ways these shaped their well-being and artistic recognition.

If Decadent poetry is "one of the most comprehensive modern attempts to turn sex into epistemology," how might ideas of embodied cognition help us understand what that might mean? This article responds to that question with an analysis of an Impressionist, erotic epistemology in Arthur Symons work. Focusing on London Nights (1897), which considers questions of erotic epistemology, it is argued that Impressionist techniques become a vehicle in his poetry for exploring cognition, Impressionism becoming a key mode of Decadent apprehension and a crucial means for questioning Decadent epistemologies. Background and Objectives: The rising numbers of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) procedures now being performed worldwide will likely be followed by an increasing number of patients experiencing gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). The purpose of the current review was to analyze in terms of safety different techniques of fundoplication used to treat GERD associated with LSG. Methods: An online search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE in December 2020 to identify articles reporting LSG and fundoplication. The following term combination was used: (sleeve, fundoplication), (sleeve, Nissen), (sleeve, Rossetti), (sleeve, Toupet) and (sleeve, Dor). The extracted information included details of the methods (e.g., retrospective case series), demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender), clinical characteristics, number of patients, rate of conversion, and postoperative outcomes. Results: A total of 154 studies were identified and after an assessment of title according to our exclusion criteria, 116 articles were removed. Of the 38 studies analyzed for full content review, a total of seven primary studies (487 patients) were identified with all inclusion criteria. Analyzing the different types of fundoplication used, we have identified: 236 cases of Nissen-Sleeve, 220 cases with modified Rossetti fundoplication, 31 cases of Dor fundoplication, and no case of Toupet fundoplication. The overall postoperative complication rate was 9.4%, with the most common reported complication being gastric perforation, 15 cases—3.1%. The second most common complication was bleeding identified in nine cases (1.8%) followed by gastric stenosis in six cases (1.2%). The mortality was nil. Conclusions: Different types of fundoplication associated with LSG appear to be a safe surgical technique with an acceptable early postoperative complication rate. Any type of fundoplication associated with LSG to decrease GERD should be evaluated cautiously while prospective clinical randomized trials are needed.

This essay argues that children's literature and political economy developed a common language to articulate the bewildering world of consumer culture, which took shape following the 1851 Great Exhibition and flourished in the 1860s and 70s. At the centre of consumer culture was the mysterious and mystifying commodity, an object that took on subjective traits when it entered the marketplace and earned exchange value. Karl Marx famously attempted to illustrate the commodity through a metaphor of a wooden table. As a material object, the table is only wood, but it comes to life during the process of exchange, a phenomenon later termed reification. During the same process that animates objects, labourers become objectified. Social relations are filtered through things rather than subjects. Mid-Victorian children's literature simultaneously began to explore the wonders and dangers of the marketplace by placing young protagonists in worlds where objects come to life. In Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871), the intrepid Alice enters upside-down and inside-out worlds where commodities become subjects. Alice ultimately learns that the real world that she inhabits resembles nonsense. Capitalism is based on rules that are just as arbitrary as the games she plays in wonderland. Christina Rossetti's Speaking Likenesses (1874) develops similar themes and environments, but takes a decidedly darker approach to illustrating the danger of the marketplace. Around 100 porcelain objects of the 18th century Rossetti, Vische and Vinovo manufactures (Piedmont, Italy) from the Palazzo Madama Museum collection were analysed by means of an X-ray fluorescence portable detector. The present study represents the first chemical characterization of these early (1737-1825) European porcelains. Chemical composition data were submitted to multivariate clustering techniques that underscored a complete classification of the three manufactures and the presence of three subgroups for the Vinovo production. These resulting subgroups did not mirror the classification expected on the basis of the historiographic literature. On one of the highest rocky ledges above the Reka River, just a few kilometers from Famlje Village and near Škocjan Caves, Školj Castle is today one of the less known castles in Slovenia. For more than a century the castle is abandoned. Until the 19th century it was among the most interesting castles in Carniola because of its picturesque location and architectural design. In this article we present the results of the last architectural history research, based on study of written archive sources, literature, image sources and castle ruins. In the second half of the nineteenth century, artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones enjoyed regular patronage from a variety of middle-class patrons, such as William Graham and Frederick Leyland. Nonetheless, such support came with drawbacks; Burne-Jones complained of being a ‘slave’ to Leyland and Rossetti described his relationship to patrons as that of a ‘whore’. These figurations speak of the dilemma the nineteenth-century male artist faced in the Victorian marketplace, a concern shared by literary artists too: for example, Browning in his artist poems. Focusing on self-perceptions by Victorian artists, as well as poetic representations of artists by Victorian writers and didactic commentaries about artists by authors such as Samuel Smiles, this article explores the various tropes used for imagining the male artist in relation to the challenges of the contemporary marketplace. Right from the beginnings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s career, his most striking quality lies in his deep commitment to a continual interrelation between the arts of poetry and of painting. This essay aims at revealing the strategies applied to the intersemiotic process taking place between Rossetti’s first Pre-raphaelite canvas, The Girlhood of Mary Virgin, and the two sonnets written to ‘illustrate’ it. To better examine the shift between different media and Rossetti’s own appraisal of such a translating process, reference has been made to some of the great names of the contemporary debate about intersemiotic translation, such as Greimas, Eco and Jakobson. By applying such modern tools of intersemiotic analysis to the artist’s first double work of art it will eventually be clear how Rossetti’s Pre-raphaelite phase is anything but an immature debut in the Victorian artistic scene. Many of the features of his early career are in fact to be found as faithfully maintained in the more complex development of his maturer art. This essay will show how The Girlhood of Mary Virgin and “Mary’s Girlhood” are to be considered as a true manifesto of Rossetti’s entire career and of his appraisal of the relation between the sister arts.

During the late Victorian period, British anarchist writers commented on Irish political affairs while the celebrated Irish author Oscar Wilde offered moral and practical support to them. Wilde's position was especially radical, since anarchism was associated in the popular imagination with the phenomenon of “propaganda by deed” - the subversive political violence that broke out in the United States and Continental Europe throughout the 1880s and 1890s. However, British anarchists regarded colonial violence in Ireland as the pressing issue of the day and explored it in their political journals, pamphlets and novels. Such texts reflected these authors' preoccupation with the Irish crisis and also warned contemporary readers that the counter-insurgency methods being applied in Ireland could be put to use on English soil. Drawing on a range of literary and political sources, this essay examines the British anarchists' interest in the Irish anti-colonial struggle by focusing on their criticism of British imperial rule, which they regarded as “foreign dictatorship”. The article presents a comparison of the childhoods of three early nineteenth-century families: the Rossettis, the Mendelssohns and the Brontës. In each case there were four exceptionally gifted children, fairly close in age, talented in more than one branch of the arts, and interacting with one another. They were all somewhat apart from their immediate surroundings, and yet ultimately managed to blend different cultural influences into outstanding achievements. The notion that readers find poetry too difficult has been documented at least since Ben Jonson voiced the opinion that John Donne ‘deserved hanging for not keeping of accent’. My contention is that hypertext is uniquely suited to help readers with poetic difficulty. A hypertext poetic edition can provide commentary, related texts by the poet and cultural predecessors, critical works, reviews, and links to other resources on the subject, all available in one location. Through an exploration of The Prufrock Papers, The Princeton Dante Project, The Rossetti Archives, and The Electronic Dickinson, the manner in which hypertext editions expedite a reader's understanding of poetry will be illustrated, as well as the unique opportunity these editions present for creating a format determined by a poet's work. In addition, editorial issues characterizing the medium will be discussed: the instability of the physical forms on which the editions reside and the software used to create them, the need for guidelines and standards for digital scholarly editing, the importance of electronic markup in development of the editions and the necessity of scholars leading the process of their creation. Shakespeare, ‘The Cause of the People’, and The Chartist Circular 1839–1842 Left political critics such as Cultural Materialists are now often rather hostile towards Shakespeare, apparently agreeing with William Hazlitt that great poetry such as Shakespeare's tends to be inimical to ‘the cause of the people’, i.e., democracy. This is a changed situation from that when the Communist Arnold Kettle, writing in the 1960s, could take it for granted that Shakespeare was an indispensable author for a radical working-class culture in Britain. This article explores the politics of Shakespeare through an analysis of how he and a selection of his plays are represented in a Chartist newspaper of the early 1840s. It argues that the Chartists saw Shakespeare as, in broad terms, an ally – they are closer to Kettle's position than Hazlitt's, let alone that of contemporary radical Bard-bashers. Nevertheless, their enthusiasm for Shakespeare did not prevent the Chartists dissenting from what they took to be conservative implications in texts such as Coriolanus and Othello – and in ways that seem to anticipate recent ideological critiques of these plays. Overall, the explicit political bias of the Chartists' reading of Shakespeare was valuable, alerting them to political implications of the plays, including democratic or progressive ones, that less or differently biased approaches are likely to miss. The article reports on Laparoscopic Nissen-Rosetti fundoplication in children. Rosetti revised the Nissen fundoplication by wrapping only the anterior wall of the stomach. He later reformed this procedure for patients with hyperacidity by conducting vagotomy of the gastroesophageal junctional area. Several modifications of this procedure are disallowed because of the dangers they pose.

Background: gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is increasingly prevalent and costly, and it may affect as much as 20% of the western population. The pathophysiology of GERD is not due to acid overproduction but rather mechanical dysfunction centered around the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Furthermore, the mainstay of GERD treatment, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), have come under scrutiny because of worrisome side effects. Aim of the Work: to prospectively compare between laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and its Rossetti's modification as anti-reflux procedures along with their operative and post-operative outcomes. Patients and Methods: this is a prospective randomized study that was conducted on twenty (20) patients presenting to Ain-Shams University Hospitals in whom fundoplication was indicated for management of chronic GERD and was operated upon starting October 2016 to October 2018 with minimal follow up duration of one year. Results: both procedures were nearly efficient and equal as regards the symptomatic control for the patients, the improvement in their quality of life, healing of esophagitis restoration of the high pressure zone, and post-operative hospital stay, while the Nissen's procedure was nearly similar to the Rossetti's modification in the aspect of post-operative dysphagia and gas-bloat syndrome, the modified Rossetti procedure showed significant superiority regarding the operative time, the incidence of intraoperative bleeding and splenic injury. Conclusion: the Rossetti procedure carried better results in the operative time, operative bleeding and splenic injury though it showed nearly no difference in incidence of post-operative dysphagia. Background: The role of surgery is debated for children with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), particularly when they show atypical symptoms. This study was designed to evaluate the safety and outcome of laparoscopic Nissen-Rossetti fundoplication performed in a selected population of children with gastroesophageal reflux and atypical supraesophageal symptoms.Methods: This prospective study included 595 patients younger than 14 years with GERD who reported recurrent respiratory symptoms and had no benefit from standard medical treatment. Surgery was performed for 48 patients with anatomic anomalies, life-threatening events, or respiratory complications after ineffective medical treatment. The subjective and objective outcomes were evaluated.Results: No major intraoperative complications were experienced, and there was no recurrence of gastroesophageal reflux during a postoperative follow-up period of 12 months. The parents' final subjective evaluation of the outcomes 12 months after surgery was positive in 44 cases and negative in 4 cases.Conclusions: Children with difficult-to-treat chronic respiratory symptoms must be evaluated for GERD, even if the need for surgery is low (8%), because complete eradication of reflux is mandatory. Radical treatment of GERD allows the pulmonologist to perform correct respiratory treatment and to prevent the development chronic and life-threatening complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
