This study evaluated the effect of fiber post customization and laser application on the results of pull-out tests in endodontically treated teeth. Forty-eight bovine incisors were stored in aqueous 2% formaldehyde (pH 7.0) for 30 days. At the end of the storage period, the incisors were scraped with No. 11/12 periodontal curettes, rinsed with water and sodium bicarbonate, and stored in 0.9% saline solution for 7 days. Roots with similar shape and dimensions were selected and sectioned to a standard 17-mm length. Root canals were prepared and filled to a depth of 12 mm. The roots were divided into 4 groups (n = 12): 1, conventional fiber post and no laser application; 2, customized fiber post and no laser application; 3, conventional fiber post and laser application; and 4, customized fiber post and laser application. After removal of the obturation material for post space preparation, the canals were enlarged, and a laser beam was applied to the roots of teeth in groups 3 and 4 as an auxiliary disinfection procedure. After cementation of the posts, a pull-out test was performed using an axial tensile load at 0.5 mm/min in a universal testing machine. Analysis of variance and the Tukey test were used for statistical analysis of the results. The mean (SD) maximum tensile force was 10.18 (4.73) kgf in group 1, 38.89 (6.49) kgf in group 2, 27.74 (10.07) kgf in group 3, and 38.92 (6.89) kgf in group 4. These values were significantly higher in groups 2 and 4 than in group 1 (P0.05). The customization of fiber posts used for the restoration of pulpless teeth resulted in significantly (P0.05) greater pull-out test values, a thinner cement layer, and improved retention.

A 32-year-old male patient attended in the Fixed Partial Prosthesis Clinic (PPF), of the Araçatuba Dental School-Paulista State University, stating as the main complaint that his anterior teeth were “ugly and broken”. After clinical examination, the patient was diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder, bruxism and the presence of dental erosions (intrinsic and extrinsic). It was proposed to be followed up by a gastroenterologist and rehabilitation with metal-free prostheses (11, 12, 21 and 22) made of lithium silicate reinforced with zirconium by the CAD / CAM system were proposed. After endodontics of the anterior-superior incisors, the anatomized fiberglass posts with composite resin were installed; the impression was made with retractor wire and addition silicone. After aesthetic testing and occlusal adjustments, the e-max Ceram PPF¨s were prepared for resin cementation with the Variolink II color Light system. After 1 week, the impression of the upper arch was taken and subsequently a muscle relaxant plate was installed. The patient and the professionals involved approved the final result, verifying the aesthetic efficacy associated with the use of a metal-free prosthesis, despite the fact that the patient has gastroesophageal involvement and temporomandibular disorder., Paciente masculino, de 32 años, acudió a la Clínica de Prótesis Parcial Fija (PPF), de la Facultad de Odontología de Araçatuba-Universidad Estadual Paulista, manifestando como queja principal que sus dientes anteriores estaban “feos y rotos”. Después del examen clínico, el paciente fue diagnosticado con desorden temporomandibular, bruxismo y presencia de erosiones dentarias (intrínsecas y extrínsecas). Se propuso el acompañamiento de un médico gastroenterólogo y la rehabilitación con prótesis libres de metal (11, 12, 21 y 22) confeccionadas en silicato de litio reforzado con zirconio por el sistema CAD/CAM. Después de la endodoncia de los incisivos antero-superiores, fueron instalados los pernos de fibra de vidrio anatomizados con resina compuesta; la impresión fue realizada con hilo retractor y silicona de adición. Después de la prueba estética y ajustes oclusales, las PPFs de e-max Ceram, fueron preparadas para cementación resinosa con el sistema Variolink II color Light. Después de 1 semana, se tomó la impresión de la arcada superior y posteriormente se le instaló una placa miorrelajante. El paciente y los profesionales involucrados aprobaron el resultado final, comprobando la eficacia estética asociada al uso de prótesis libre de metal, a pesar de que el paciente presenta compromiso gastroesofágico y desorden temporomandibular.

The aim of this study was to report a patient of rehabilitation with removable partial denture retained by implants in-patient who suffered injury after firearm shooting. A 19-year-old man presented to the hospital of the Val Paraíso city after being hit by a bullet in the right on the face, affecting the teeth 12 to 16. The surgery to remove the shards of teeth, and bullet was performed. Surgical team opted for installation of implants without bone grafts; however, due to extensive loss of alveolar bone, only 3 tilted implants (2 Ø3.75 × 8.5 mm and 1 Ø3.75 × 10 mm) were installed. After recovery, the patient was referred to the Araçatuba Dental School-UNESP for the rehabilitation on the affected region. The difficulty of rehabilitation with conventional fixed prostheses was verified during the prosthetic phase. This way, it was opted for rehabilitation with removable partial dentures associated with dental implant. Two attachment system ERA (ERA, Sterngold) were positioned in the bar to make the removable partial denture. After 5 years of follow-up, the authors can conclude that the use of removable partial denture retained by implants is effective for functional and aesthetic rehabilitation, favoring socialization and self-esteem of the patient.

Computer-aided design software was used to construct 3 models. Each model was composed of a bone and an implant (external hexagon, internal hexagon, or Morse taper) with a crown. Finite element analysis software was used to generate the finite element mesh and establish the loading and boundary conditions. A normal force (200-N axial load and 100-N oblique load) and parafunctional force (1000-N axial and 500-N oblique load) were applied. Results were visualized as the maximum principal stress. Os dados coletados foram analisados por meio de estatística descritiva e o teste do qui-quadrado.Resultados O fator dentes para análise facial e o fator posicionamento no arco para análise sorriso foram considerados os temas mais importantes a respeito da estética, de acordo com os entrevistados. 67,5% dos pacientes estavam insatisfeitos com a aparência de seus dentes, a insatisfação com a cor foi o fator mais importante (66,8%). O tratamento mais desejado foi o clareamento dental e 85,0% dos pacientes disse sim a ele.Conclusão Os pacientes dão grande valor aos dentes sobre a aparência rosto, e ele pode ser visto que os tratamentos estéticos são altamente valorizados em todos os grupos etários. Há uma necessidade de tratamentos para restabelecer a função, mas os tratamentos para melhorar a aparência dentária foram os mais solicitados. ABSTRACTObjective The aim of this study was to investigate the subjective aspects related to the perception of dental appearance and expectations of patients who receive dental treatment in graduation clinics of the Araçatuba Dental School.Methods It was evaluated 362 patients of both gender aged over 18. The questionnaire included questions of demographic data, questions to assess facial and dental aesthetics, dental satisfaction and treatments considering patients notion to improve dental esthetics. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test.Results The factor teeth for facial analysis and factor positioning in the arch for smile analysis were considered the most important subjects regarding the esthetic according to the respondents. 67.5% of patients were dissatisfied with the appearance of their teeth, and dissatisfaction with the color was the most important factor (66.8%). The treatment most desired was tooth whitening and 85.0% of patients said yes to it.Conclusion Respondents place great value on the teeth on the face appearance, and it can be seen that aesthetic treatments are highly valued in all age groups. There is a need for treatments to restore the function, but treatments to improve dental appearance were the most requested. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the microhardness of three resin cements used in cementing glass fiber posts in bovine incisor. The microhardness was analyzed in cervical, middle and apical thirds before and after thermocycling process. Materials and Methods: Bovine teeth were instrumented and divided into 3 groups composed of 10 teeth each. Then, the teeth were sectioned and obturated and had their canals prepared at a depth of 12mm. Once proceeded the desobturation, the roots and glass fiber posts were prepared for adhesive cementation. After cementation, the microhardness reading was carried out. After initial reading, the samples were placed in a thermocycler and subjected to 2,000 cycles and a new microhardness reading. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Turkey’s test. Results: It was observed a statistical difference among the microhardness of resin cements. However, the statistical difference of microhardness before and after thermocycling appeared only in group U-200. Conclusion: Thermocycling reduced microhardness values in all cements evaluated in this study. The autopolymerizing cement Multilink presented the most stable microhardness mean values after thermocycling in the coronal, middle and apical thirds.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the platform-switching technique on stress distribution in implant, abutment, and peri-implant tissues, through a 3-dimensional finite element study. Three 3-dimensional mandibular models were fabricated using the SolidWorks 2006 and InVesalius software. Each model was composed of a bone block with one implant 10 mm long and of different diameters (3.75 and 5.00 mm). The UCLA abutments also ranged in diameter from 5.00 mm to 4.1 mm. After obtaining the geometries, the models were transferred to the software FEMAP 10.0 for pre- and postprocessing of finite elements to generate the mesh, loading, and boundary conditions. A total load of 200 N was applied in axial (0°), oblique (45°), and lateral (90°) directions. The models were solved by the software NeiNastran 9.0 and transferred to the software FEMAP 10.0 to obtain the results that were visualized through von Mises and maximum principal stress maps. Model A (implants with 3.75 mm/abutment with 4.1 mm) exhibited the highest area of stress concentration with all loadings (axial, oblique, and lateral) for the implant and the abutment. All models presented the stress areas at the abutment level and at the implant/abutment interface. Models B (implant with 5.0 mm/abutment with 5.0 mm) and C (implant with 5.0 mm/abutment with 4.1 mm) presented minor areas of stress concentration and similar distribution pattern. For the cortical bone, low stress concentration was observed in the peri-implant region for models B and C in comparison to model A. The trabecular bone exhibited low stress that was well distributed in models B and C. Model A presented the highest stress concentration. Model B exhibited better stress distribution. There was no significant difference between the large-diameter implants (models B and C).

This study aimed to investigate the stress distribution in screwed implant-supported prostheses with different implant-abutment connections by using a photoelastic analysis.Four photoelastic models were fabricated in PL-2 resin and divided according to the implant-abutment connection (external hexagon (EH) and Morse taper (MT) implants (3.75 × 11.5 mm)) and the number crowns (single and 3-unit piece). Models were positioned in a circular polariscope and 100-N axial and oblique (45) loading were applied in the occlusal surface of the crowns by using a universal testing machine. The stresses were photographically recorded and qualitatively analyzed using software (Adobe Photoshop).Under axial loading, the MT implants exhibited a lower number of fringes for single-unit crowns than EH implants, whereas for a 3-unit piece the MT implants showed a higher number of fringes vs EH implants. The oblique loading increased the number of fringes for all groups.In conclusion, the MT implant-abutment connection reduced the amount of stress in single-unit crowns, for 3-unit piece crowns the amount of stress was lower using an external hexagon connection. The stress pattern was similar for all groups. Oblique loading promoted a higher stress concentration than axial loading.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution on external hexagon, internal hexagon, and Morse taper implant in single and 3-unit implant-supported fixed partial prostheses (FPPs) using photoelasticity. Six models were fabricated with the photoelastic resin PL-2: 3 models for the 3-unit implant-supported FPP with implants of 4.0 × 10.0 mm in the region of the second premolar and molar including 1 model for each type of implant connection, and 3 models for the single prosthesis for each implant type. The prostheses fabrication was standardized. A circular polariscope was used, and axial and oblique (45 degrees) loads of 100 N were applied in a universal testing machine. The results were photographed and analyzed qualitatively. The internal hexagon implant exhibited better stress distribution and lower intensity of fringes followed by the external hexagon and Morse taper implants for the models with the 3-unit prostheses. For the single implants, the Morse taper implant presented better stress distribution, followed by the internal and external hexagon implants. The oblique loading increased the number of photoelastic fringes in all models. It was concluded that the internal hexagon implant exhibited better biomechanical behavior for the 3-unit implant-supported FPP, whereas the Morse taper implant was more favorable for the single implant-supported prosthesis. The oblique loading increased the stress in all models.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the tendency of displacement of the supporting structures of the distal extension removable partial denture (DERPD) associated to the implant with different inclinations of alveolar ridge and implant localizations through a two-dimensional finite-element method. Sixteen mandibular models were fabricated, presenting horizontal, distally descending, distally ascending, or descending-ascending ridges. All models presented the left canine and were rehabilitated with conventional DERPD or implant-retained prosthesis with the ERA system. The models were obtained by the AutoCAD software and transferred to the finite-element software ANSYS 9.0 for analysis. A force of 50 N was applied on the cusp tips of the teeth, with 5 points of loading of 10 N. The results were visualized by displacement maps. For all ridge inclinations, the assembly of the DERPD with distal plate retained by an anterior implant exhibited the lowest requisition of the supporting structures. The highest tendency of displacement occurred in the model with distally ascending ridge with incisal rest. It was concluded that the association of the implant decreased the displacement of the DERPD, and the anterior positioning of the implant associated to the DERPD with the distal plate preserved the supporting structures for all ridges.

The aim of this study was to use two-dimensional finite element method to evaluate the displacement and stress distribution transmitted by a distal extension removable partial denture (DERPD) associated with an implant placed at different inclinations (0, 5, 15, and 30 degrees) in the second molar region of the edentulous man- dible ridge. Six hemimandibular models were created: model A, only with the presence of the natural tooth 33; model B, similar to model A, with the presence of a conventional DERPD replacing the missing teeth; model C, similar to the previous model, with a straight implant (0 degrees) in the distal region of the ridge, under the denture base; model D, similar to model C, with the implant angled at 5 degrees in the mesial direction; model E, similar to model C, with the implant angled at 15 degrees in the mesial direction; and model F, similar to ME, with the implant angled at 30 degrees in the mesial direction. The models were created with the use of the AutoCAD 2000 program (Autodesk, Inc, San Rafael, CA) and processed for finite element analysis by the ANSYS 8.0 program (Swanson Analysis Systems, Houston, PA). The force applied was vertical of 50 N on each cusp tip. The results showed that the in- troduction of the RPD overloaded the supporting structures of the RPD and that the introduction of the implant helped to relieve the stresses of the mucosa alveolar, cortical bone, and trabecular bone. The best stress distribution occurred in model D with the implant angled at 5 degrees. The use of an implant as a support decreased the displacement of alveolar mucosa for all inclinations simulated. The stress distribution transmitted by the DERPD to the supporting structures was improved by the use of straight or slightly inclined implants. According to the displacement analysis and von Mises stress, it could be expected that straight or slightly inclined implants do not represent biomechanical risks to use.

Three models were constructed of the photoelastic resin PL-2, with a single implant and a screw-retained implant-supported prosthesis. These models were Model A, platform 5.0 mm/abutment 4.1 mm; Model B, platform 4.1 mm/abutment 4.1 mm; and Model C, platform 5.00 mm/abutment 5.00 mm. Axial and oblique (45 degrees) loads of 100 N were applied using a Universal Testing Machine (EMIC DL 3000). Images were photographed with a digital camera and visualized with software (AdobePhotoshop) to facilitate the qualitative analysis. The highest stress concentrations were observed at the apical third of the 3 models. With the oblique load, the highest stress concentrations were located at the implant apex, opposite the load application. Stress concentrations decreased in the cervical region of Model A (platform switching), and Models A (platform switching) and C (conventional/wide-diameter) displayed similar stress magnitudes. Finally, Model B (conventional/regular diameter) displayed the highest stress concentrations of the models tested. Introduction and Objective: To analyze if axial loads of 50 N and 100 N, applied on an implant of 3.75 X 10 mm (Conexão-Jaú, SP, Brazil) fixed on the central portion of a prototype of the mandible with and without support base, generate isochromatic fringes of different intensity and ways. Material and methods: The sample was a segment of the mandible with 115 mm in length, 30 mm height,and 12 mm in thickness, from a block of #7 rose wax. This matrix was adapted to a modified articulator in such way that its base could or not keep contact with the lower arm of the articulator, simply by modifying the support axis. An implant was put perpendicular to the segment of the mandible’s body and then the photoelastic model obtained. The healing abutment was screwed to the implant to receive loads from 50 N to 100 N, with the model with or withoutcontact of its base with the inferior arm of the articulator. Results: Alterations in the reflections of the colors was observed when the implants had been submitted to loads of 50 N and 100 N with or without supported base. Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be concluded that during the photoelasticity analyses alterations in the color standards occurred depending on the support of the sample and the applied load.

Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the influence of cusp inclination on stress distribution in implant-supported prostheses by 3D finite element method. Materials and methods Three-dimensional models were created to simulate a mandibular bone section with an implant (3.75 mm diameter x 10 mm length) and crown by means of a 3D scanner and 3D CAD software. A screw-retained single crown was simulated using three cusp inclinations (10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees). The 3D models (model 10d, model 20d, and model 30d) were transferred to the finite element program NeiNastran 9.0 to generate a mesh and perform the stress analysis. An oblique load of 200 N was applied on the internal vestibular face of the metal ceramic crown. Results The results were visualized by means of von Mises stress maps. Maximum stress concentration was located at the point of application. The implant showed higher stress values in model 30d (160.68 MPa). Cortical bone showed higher stress values in model 10d (28.23 MPa). Conclusion Stresses on the implant and implant/abutment interface increased with increasing cusp inclination, and stresses on the cortical bone decreased with increasing cusp inclination.

The association of the removable partial dentures (RPDs) and osseointegrated implants it has been mentioned in the literature, but reports don’t still exist on the best connection form with the last support tooth in the cases of distal extension. Like this, the objective of this work was to study, through the bidimensional FEA, the behavior of the support structures of a conventional RPD and associated with implants, just acting as support, by variation in the connection systems with the last support tooth between distal incisal rest or and distal plate. 4 hemi-mandibular models were made, with presence just of the tooth 33: Model A: conventional RPD and distal incisal rest; Model B: conventional RPD and distal plate; Model C: RPD associated with implant (3,75 x 10,0 mm) and distal incisal rest; Model D: RPD associated with implant (3,75 x 10,0 mm) and distal plate. The finite element program used was ANSYS 9.0 with loading of 50N in each cusp tip, strictly vertical. The results were obtained through displacement maps and tension maps. The results showed decrease of the ligament and support tooth tension when distal plate were present, as in the displacement maps or in the tension maps. For this methodology it was possible conclude: 1. The distal plate reduced the tendency of movement of the support tooth in all models; 2. the models that incorporated the distal plate improved the internal distribution of von Mises tensions, mainly for the relief of the support tooth.

METHODS: The prepared medium was changed every 72 h and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Samples were removed from the prepared medium at 15, 30, 48 and 60 days. RESULTS: The result shows that ions released were statistically different among all groups, and so were both biofilm and pits formation and the corrosion induced by the S. mutans in both types of samples. SEM observation of the samples immersed in the prepared medium with S. mutans showed adherence of microorganisms on the whole surface, in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: The S. mutans adhere to both amalgam and copper/aluminum alloy causing corrosion of those restorations. S. mutans produced a greater ions release in Cu/Al alloy; in amalgam, the ions release was not influenced by exposure to S. mutans. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to gather information and discuss the predictability of implant-supported prostheses in patients with bruxism by performing a literature review. METHODS: In order to select the studies included in this review, a detailed search was performed in PubMed and Medline databases, using the following key words: bruxism, dental implants, implant supported prosthesis, and dental restoration failure. Items that were included are: case reports, randomized controlled trials, in vitro studies, literature and systematic reviews, with or without meta-analysis, of the last 20 years that addressed the theme. Articles without abstracts, animal studies, articles in languages other than English and articles from journals unrelated to the dental field were excluded. RESULTS: after analysis according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, 28 articles were selected from a total of 54. It is known from the array of scientific articles which have assessed, either through retrospective, prospective or experimental studies, that the biomechanical and biological impact of bruxism on implant-supported prostheses is small, and that the literature has contributed little to exemplify the prosthetic limits of safety for the specialist from a clinical point of view. CONCLUSION: Although there is still no general consensus on this matter, most of the literature review articles do provide clinical guidelines that contribute to implant supported prostheses longevity and stability in patients with bruxism. OBJETIVO: Realizar uma revisão sistemática, a fim de reunir informações e discutir a previsibilidade de próteses sobre implantes em pacientes com bruxismo. MÉTODOS: Para a identificação dos estudos dessa revisão, foi realizada uma estratégia de busca detalhada e avançada nos bancos de dados PubMed e Medline. Foram utilizados como descritores: bruxismo, implantes dentários, prótese implantossuportada e falha da restauração dentárial; bruxism, dental implants, implant-supported prosthesis e dental restoration failure. Os critérios de inclusão foram: artigos clínicos, estudos controlados aleatórios, estudos in vitro, revisões de literatura e revisões sistemáticas com e sem meta-análise dos últimos 20 anos que abordassem o tema proposto. Os critérios de exclusão foram: artigos sem resumo, estudos em animais, artigos cujo idioma não fosse o inglês e artigos de periódicos que não pertencessem à área odontológica. RESULTADOS: De um total de 54 artigos, após uma análise segundo o critério de inclusão e exclusão, foram selecionados 28 artigos. É sabido que a quantidade de artigos científicos que avaliaram, seja através de estudos retrospectivos, prospectivos ou experimentais, o impacto biológico e biomecânico do bruxismo em próteses sobre implantes é pequena e pouco tem contribuído para melhor exemplificação e discernimento dos limites protéticos de segurança para o especialista sob um ponto de vista clínico. CONCLUSÃO: Portanto, ainda não há um consenso geral acerca desse assunto, porém, a maioria dos artigos de revisão de literatura fornecem guias de orientação clínica, os quais auxiliam na longevidade e estabilidade de próteses sobre implantes em pacientes com bruxismo.

Para el paciente anciano la prótesis dental es una integradora familiar, social, mantenedora de la salud general y elevadora de la expectativa de vida. Algunos cambios fisiológicos, patológicos y funcionales que ocurren con los elementos dentales en la tercera edad pueden repercutir en el tratamiento protésico. La siguiente revisión de literatura destaca los aspectos fundamentales que deben ser considerados en el tratamiento protésico de pacientes ancianos. Se destacan las particularidades de la prótesis parcial removible, prótesis total removible, prótesis parcial fija y prótesis sobre implante, así como las indicaciones de higiene oral. Se concluye que el cirujano dentista debe discutir con el paciente la mejor alternativa de tratamiento para cada caso específico y elegir aquella opción más adecuada a la capacidad de higiene bucal del paciente.

The aim of this study was to evaluate stress distribution with different implant systems through photoelasticity. Five models were fabricated with photoelastic resin PL-2. Each model was composed of a block of photoelastic resin (10 × 40 × 45 mm) with an implant and a healing abutment: model 1, internal hexagon implant (4.0 × 10 mm; Conect AR, Conexão, São Paulo, Brazil); model 2, Morse taper/internal octagon implant (4.1 × 10 mm; Standard, Straumann ITI, Andover, Mass); model 3, Morse taper implant (4.0 × 10 mm; AR Morse, Conexão); model 4, locking taper implant (4.0 × 11 mm; Bicon, Boston, Mass); model 5, external hexagon implant (4.0 × 10 mm; Master Screw, Conexão). Axial and oblique load (45°) of 150 N were applied by a universal testing machine (EMIC-DL 3000), and a circular polariscope was used to visualize the stress. The results were photographed and analyzed qualitatively using Adobe Photoshop software. For the axial load, the greatest stress concentration was exhibited in the cervical and apical thirds. However, the highest number of isochromatic fringes was observed in the implant apex and in the cervical adjacent to the load direction in all models for the oblique load. Model 2 (Morse taper, internal octagon, Straumann ITI) presented the lowest stress concentration, while model 5 (external hexagon, Master Screw, Conexão) exhibited the greatest stress. It was concluded that Morse taper implants presented a more favorable stress distribution among the test groups. The external hexagon implant showed the highest stress concentration. Oblique load generated the highest stress in all models analyzed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution in implants of regular platforms and of wide diameter with different sizes of hexagon by the 3-dimensional finite element method. We used simulated 3-dimensional models with the aid of Solidworks 2006 and Rhinoceros 4.0 software for the design of the implant and abutment and the InVesalius software for the design of the bone. Each model represented a block of bone from the mandibular molar region with an implant 10 mm in length and different diameters. Model A was an implant 3.75 mm/regular hexagon, model B was an implant 5.00 mm/regular hexagon, and model C was an implant 5.00 mm/expanded hexagon. A load of 200 N was applied in the axial, lateral, and oblique directions. At implant, applying the load (axial, lateral, and oblique), the 3 models presented stress concentration at the threads in the cervical and middle regions, and the stress was higher for model A. At the abutment, models A and B showed a similar stress distribution, concentrated at the cervical and middle third; model C showed the highest stresses. On the cortical bone, the stress was concentrated at the cervical region for the 3 models and was higher for model A. In the trabecular bone, the stresses were less intense and concentrated around the implant body, and were more intense for model A. Among the models of wide diameter (models B and C), model B (implant 5.00 mm/regular hexagon) was more favorable with regard to distribution of stresses. Model A (implant 3.75 mm/regular hexagon) showed the largest areas and the most intense stress, and model B (implant 5.00 mm/regular hexagon) showed a more favorable stress distribution. The highest stresses were observed in the application of lateral load.

The aim of this study was to perform a photoelastic analysis of stress distribution on straight and angulated implants with different crowns (screwed and cemented). Three models were made of photoelastic resin PL-2: model 1: external hexagon implant 3.75×10.00 mm at 0 degrees; model 2: external hexagon implant 3.75×10.00 mm at 17 degrees; model 3: external hexagon implant 3.75×10.00 mm at 30 degrees. Axial and oblique (45 degrees) load (100 N) was applied with a universal testing machine. The photoelastic fringes on the models were recorded with a digital camera and visualized in a graphic software for qualitative analysis. The axial loading generated the same pattern of stress distribution. The highest stresses were concentrated between medium and apical thirds. The oblique loading generated a similar pattern of stress distribution in the models with similar implant angulation; the highest stress was located on the cervical region opposite to implant angulation and on the apical third. It was concluded that the higher the implant angulation, the higher the stress value, independent of crown type. The screwed prostheses exhibited the highest stress concentration. The oblique load generated higher stress value and concentration than the axial load.

The aim of this study was to assess the stress distribution of the retention systems (screwed and cemented) for implant-supported fixed partial dentures by means of photoelastic method. Two models were made of photoelastic resin PL-2 with 2 implants (phi = 4.00 x 10 mm) located in the second premolar and molar region in each photoelastic model, varying the retention system (screwed and cemented). The implant-supported fixed partial dentures were standardized and made of Ni-Cr alloy. Axial and oblique (45 degrees) forces of 100 N were applied on the occlusal surface by means of a Universal Testing Machine (EMIC-DL 3000; Sao Jose dos Pinhais, Parana, Brazil). The results were observed and photographed in the field of a circular polariscope and qualitatively analyzed with the aid of computer software (Adobe Photoshop, San Jose, CA). The screw retention system presented the highest number of fringes when the loads were applied on the premolar, pontic, and molar and showed this behavior in all load applications, under axial and oblique loads. It was concluded that there was a better stress distribution and lower magnitude of stress on the cemented implant-supported dentures, under axial and oblique loads. Oblique load caused an increase in stress concentrations in all the models.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of a mandibular distal extension removable partial denture (DERPD) associated with an implant and different retention system, by bidimensional finite element method. Five hemimandible models with a canine and external hexagon implant at second molar region associated with DERPD were simulated: model A, hemimandible with a canine and a DERPD; model B, hemimandible with a canine and implant with a healing abutment associated to a DERPD; model C, hemimandible with a canine and implant with an ERA attachment associated to a DERPD; model D, hemimandible with a canine and implant with an O'ring attachment associated to a DERPD; and model E, hemimandible with a canine and implant-supported prosthesis associated to a DERPD. Cusp tips were loaded with 50 N of axial or oblique force (45 degrees). Finite element analysis was performed in ANSYS 9.0. model E showed the higher displacement and overload in the supporting tissues; the patterns of stress distribution around the dental apex of models B, C, and D were similar. The association between a DERPD and an osseointegrated implant using the ERA or O'ring systems shows lower stress values. Oblique forces showed higher stress values and displacement. Oblique forces increased the displacement and stress levels in all models; model C displayed the best stress distribution in the supporting structures; healing abutment, ERA, and O'ring systems were viable with RPD, but DERPD association with a single implant-supported prosthesis was nonviable.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2010-04-01 The purpose of present study was to analyze the effect of pigmentation and chemical disinfection on the initial and the permanent deformation of two silicones (Silved Selant and Brascoved) for facial prosthesis. Initial and permanent deformation tests samples (20 mm × 12.5 mm) were made following the manufacturer's instructions. For each silicone (n= 40), ten samples were used for pigmentation with make up power, ten with iron oxide, ten with ceramics power and tem were tested without pigmentation. Five samples of each group were submitted to chemical disinfection using a 2 % Chlorhexidine spray. All samples were immersed in physiological saline and stored in an oven at 35 ° ± 1 °C. After 90 days, the samples were submitted to initial and permanent deformation tests using a dial indicator. For both properties, data were analyzed by Tukey's test (a= 0.05). The results showed that all the materials had initial and permanent deformation regardless of pigmentation and chemical disinfection. The groups were used for pigmentation with iron oxide showed less initial and permanent deformation when were submitted to the chemical disinfection regardless the silicone used. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of cusp inclination on stress distribution in implant-supported prostheses by 3D finite element method.Three-dimensional models were created to simulate a mandibular bone section with an implant (3.75 mm diameter x 10 mm length) and crown by means of a 3D scanner and 3D CAD software. A screw-retained single crown was simulated using three cusp inclinations (10 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees). The 3D models (model 10d, model 20d, and model 30d) were transferred to the finite element program NeiNastran 9.0 to generate a mesh and perform the stress analysis. An oblique load of 200 N was applied on the internal vestibular face of the metal ceramic crown.The results were visualized by means of von Mises stress maps. Maximum stress concentration was located at the point of application. The implant showed higher stress values in model 30d (160.68 MPa). Cortical bone showed higher stress values in model 10d (28.23 MPa).Stresses on the implant and implant/abutment interface increased with increasing cusp inclination, and stresses on the cortical bone decreased with increasing cusp inclination.

There has been much discussion regarding the ideal position of the condyle in the mandibular fossa. Although the centric relation position (CR) is used as a reference, some authors do not believe that it is physiologic. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate in a group of asymptomatic individuals the position of the condyle in the mandibular fossa at maximum intercuspation (MI), with a occlusal splint and with a Lucia jig between the teeth. It was analyzed by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcranial radiography imaging and analysis of horizontal axis of rotation from casts mounted on an articulator. The results showed that even if patients had mandibular displacement in positions of CR, habitual maximum intercuspation and with the occlusal splint, confirmed by means of the analysis of the horizontal axis of rotation, the images showed no statistically significant differences among condylar positions. It can therefore be concluded that the positions analyzed were similar and that transcranial radiography seems to be a reliable method for analyzing condylar position.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Shore A hardness and color stability of two soft lining materials after thermocycling and when chemical polishing was used or omitted. Two acrylic-based soft lining materials were tested: Coe-Soft and Soft Confort, 14 specimens were made for each material. They were distributed in four groups according to the treatment performed. The specimens were thermocycled (1000 cycles) and half of the group submitted to chemical polishing (methyl methacrylate). Shore A hardness was determined and color stability was calculated by means of Commission International de l'Eclairage Lab uniform color scale using a spectrophotometer, the measurements were made immediately after deflasked, chemical polishing and thermocycling. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's tests were performed at p0.01. Color changes (deltaE) were observed after thermocycling in both soft lining materials: Soft Confort (10.60) showed significantly higher values than Coe-Soft (4.57). Coe-Soft (26.42) showed higher Shore A hardness values than Soft Confort (19.42). Chemical polishing did not influence in the color stability of both materials; however, influenced in the hardness values of Coe-Soft.

Fabrication of an interim prosthesis is an important procedure in oral rehabilitation because it aids in determining the esthetics, phonetics, and occlusal relationship of the definitive restoration. The typical material (acrylic resin) used in interim prostheses commonly fails due to fractures. During extended oral rehabilitation with fixed partial prostheses, high strength interim prostheses are often required to protect hard and soft tissues, avoid dental mobility, and to allow the clinician and patient a chance to evaluate cosmetics and function before the placement of the definitive prosthesis. Furthermore, a satisfactory interim prosthesis can serve as a template for the construction of the definitive prosthesis. The maintenance of this prosthesis is important during treatment for protection of teeth and occlusal stability. Procedures to reinforce interim prostheses help to improve performance and esthetics in long-term treatment. Due to the low durability of acrylic resin in long-term use, the use of reinforcing materials, such as metal castings or spot-welded stainless steel matrix bands, is indicated in cases of extensive restoration and long-term treatment. This paper describes an easy technique for fabricating a fixed interim prosthesis using acrylic resin and a cast metallic reinforcement.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the dimensional stability and detail reproduction of two silicones used for facial prosthesis, under the influence of chemical disinfection and storage time. Twenty-eight test specimens were obtained, half made of Silastic MDX 4-4210 silicone, and the other half of Silastic 732 RTV silicone. The test specimens were divided into 4 groups: Silastic 732 RTV and Silastic MDX 4-4210, with disinfection 3 times a week with Efferdent and without disinfection. Dimensional change was analyzed using an electronic comparison microscope and detail reproduction was observed under a stereo microscope, immediately and 2 months after the test specimens were made. Once the results were obtained, an analisis of variance (ANOVA) was applied, followed by the Tukey's Test with 1% confidence. The storage time factor had a statistical influence on dimensional stability: Silastic MDX 4-4210 had less contraction than Silastic 732 RTV. Chemical disinfection did not significantly alter the dimensional stability of the materials used. Regarding detail reproduction, no alteration of values was observed in any of the materials analyzed, regardless of storage period or disinfection.

In order to evaluate the presence of TMD (temporomandibular disorder), dissatisfaction related to the use of removable partial dentures (RPD) and the effect of the treatment on temporomandibular joint noises, 13 female patients with Kennedy class I and II mandibular arch were selected. Another 13 young, asymptomatic, dentate patients, also female, were used as reference. After four years, 38.4% were found to have a moderate or severe degree of TMD. Over the four years, the degree of TMD increased in 46.15% of the patients, was not affected in 20.07%, while in 15.38% it decreased or the patients remained free from signs and symptoms. About 30% of the patients at the second year and 46% after the fourth year, had complaints regarding retention and stability. It was concluded that there is no relationship between TMD and the condition of partially edentulous Kennedy class I and II, but patient dissatisfaction increased after the second year and temporomandibular joint noise was reduced significantly with the replacement of the teeth.

Fundamento' Los materiales para rebasados resilentes de protesis, presentan ciertas caracteristicas clinica mente importantes que pueden alterarse con el tiempo de uso, entre ellas la dureza, y rugosidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaiuar la influencia del almacenamiento sobre la dureza Shore A y rugosidad de cuatro materiales resilentes para rebasado. Materiales y metodo: Fueron utilizados 4 materiales resilentes: Dentuflex, Coe-Soft, Dentusoft y Dinabase, 3 temporales y un permanente; para cada material fueron confeccionadas 7 muestras.
