Abstract

Given the growing concern over antibiotic resistance, there is an urgent need to explore alternative antibacterial strategies. Metal oxide nanostructures have emerged as a promising option, and in particular, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures have demonstrated strong antifungal and antibacterial properties. This study focuses on ZnO nanowires (ZnO NWs) and their potential as antibacterial agents against Pseudomonas putida, a Gram-negative bacterium. The objective is to investigate the antibacterial mechanisms and assess their efficiency. The unique shape of ZnO NWs, obtained through hydrothermal growth, may rupture bacterial cells and inhibit bacterial growth. In addition to their morphology, the release of Zn2+ ions from ZnO NWs may contribute to their antibacterial properties. These ions have the potential to disrupt the bacterial cell membrane, further impeding bacterial growth. Moreover, ZnO nanostructures exhibit excellent photocatalytic properties under UV light, enhancing their antibacterial effects. Overall, this study highlights the potential of hydrothermally synthesized ZnO NWs in inhibiting P. putida growth and provides valuable insights into their antibacterial mechanisms. The findings suggest that ZnO nanostructures have the potential to be effective antibacterial agents and could be utilized in various settings to fight microbial infections and maintain hygiene. Abstract

Homogenization theory is used to calculate the macroscopic dielectric constant from the quantum microscopic dielectric function in a periodic medium. The method can be used to calculate any macroscopic constitutive relation, but it is illustrated here for the case of electrodynamics of matter. The so-called cell problem of homogenization theory is solved and an explicit expression is given for the macroscopic dielectric constant in a form akin to the Clausius-Mossotti or Lorentz-Lorenz relation. The validity of this expression is checked by showing that the macroscopic dielectric constant is causal and has the expected symmetry properties, and that the average of the microscopic energy density is the macroscopic one. Finally, the general expression is applied to Bloch eigenstates. Finally, the corresponding many-body problem is briefly discussed., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Stained glass windows are a precious heritage to pass on to future generations. However, medieval stained glass windows are particularly altered due to their chemical composition and the effects of climatic (mainly water and temperature), environmental (pollution) and biological factors. In this review, we present the alteration patterns observed on ancient Si-K-Ca stained glass windows. To better understand their formation mechanisms and determine the alteration rates, different exposure campaigns to the current atmosphere in a position sheltered from rain or not and laboratory experiments in aqueous medium or in gaseous phase have been conducted. Either model glass or ancient stained glass windows were studied. Isotopic tracers (D, 18O, 29Si) have been used as they constitute a powerful tool to elucidate the involved processes and to measure their kinetics. Thanks to all of these data, an alteration scenario of medieval stained glass alteration is proposed. Besides, the extrapolation of kinetic data based on several hypotheses over seven centuries gives very consistent results compared to the ancient stained glass samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Synroc is a synthetic assembly of titanate phases to immobilize radioactive waste and perovskite is one of its major constituent (≈25%). It is generally assumed that REE 3+ and transuranic elements substitute Ca in CaTiO 3 perovskite of SYNROC owing to the proximity of their ionic radii. In this case, the mechanism of charge compensation can be explained either by partial replacement of Ti by Al, A site vacancies or titanium reduction to Ti 3+ state. Several factors can affect the substitution mechanisms (such as the A/B cationic ratio, the percentage of REE 3+ incorporation, the ionic radii of the REE 3+ , the atmosphere of synthesis…). In this study, we investigated the incorporation of Nd 3+ in the CaSnO 3 perovskite, an analogue of CaTiO 3 with an orthorhombic structure Pbnm. CaSnO 3 powder was synthesized by a conventional solid state route. The sintered CaSnO 3 was then mixed with Nd(OH) 3 , pressed into pellet and sintered at 1550°C for 3 days. Samples with varying compositions (ranging from 5 to 60 wt% of Nd) were then analysed by XRD, SEM, EMPA and Raman spectroscopy. Incorporation of Nd in the perovskite phase was successful up to 50% wt. The evolution of the lattice parameters is following a Vegard's law. A phase transition from an orthorhombic Pbnm structure to a monoclinic P2 1 /n structure is observed around Nd=30 wt%. The grain size of the ceramics globally increases with the Nd incorporation. Thus, crystals of the Nd 40 wt% and Nd 50 wt% samples were adapted for a single crystal XRD investigation. The results show that Nd substitutes Ca in the A site of the structure. The excess of positive charge on the A site due to the substitution of a divalent cation by a trivalent one is compensated by a migration of the calcium substituted on A site, to the Sn B site. Depending on the different synthesis parameters, several cristallochemistry could be obtained due to the huge flexibility of the perovskite structure. Besides, the durability of those perovskites might be affected by the different substitutions mechanisms. Further studies on the CaTiO 3 doped perovskite are therefore necessary to apprehend its long-term behavior in SYNROC.

Abstract

Samples of calcium titanate perovskite (CaTiO3) substituted with variable amounts of trivalent La, Pr, Nd or Sm were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The synthesized compounds were characterized by means of electron microprobe (EMPA), powder X-ray diffraction and µ-Raman spectroscopy. The incorporation of the studied lanthanides in the CaTiO3 perovskite leads to the formation of complex (Ca1-2xLn2x)(Ti1-xCax)O3 perovskites with a Pbnm disordered structure. This mechanism was revealed by the Ca/Ti ratio analyses of the samples, the study of the lattice parameter evolution and the Raman A1g octahedral breathing mode frequency comparison for all systems. Abstract

International audience; Manganese is a chemical element used as a colourizer in glass industry since antiquity. Its capacity to be present under various oxidation states makes it responsible of a large variety of colourations. In its oxidized state (Mn3+), it imparts a strong purple to violet colour (dependant on matrix composition). Combined with iron, manganese often plays the role of a decolourizer leading to uncoloured glasses mainly used to represent hands and faces in glass windows (see for example Ferrand et al., 2015). The exact understanding of the involved reactions is however not complete and might provide information about the glass technology used in these ancient times. A series of glasses has been synthesized in order to relate the colouration of glasses with the conditions of synthesis (temperature, atmosphere, glass composition). Two temperatures have been used (1200 and 1550°C). Glasses have been synthesized under air or under reducing atmosphere (H2/N2). The glass composition has been chosen on the basis of the average of a large range of medieval glasses compositions for what concerns the main oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, Na2O, CaO, MgO). The MnO (resp. FeO) content has been varied between 1.5-x wt% (resp. x wt%), x varying from 0 to 1.5. Glass compositions have been checked by microprobe analysis at the Camparis facility of the Paris 6 university. Optical absorption spectra in the UV-Vis-NIR range have been measured at the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation in Kiev (UV-Vis) in the range 32000-6000 cm-1 and at the Technical University in Berlin (NIR) in the range 7000-1000 cm-1. The colour of the different glasses has been characterized within the CIE 1931 model. For a given temperature, results show that the addition of Mn in a Fe-rich glass composition implies a decreasing of the concentration in Fe2+ and an increase of the concentration in Fe3+. When the uncoloured composition is reached a further increase of the Mn content leads to glasses with a persistent pink colouration. However, results also show that uncoloured glasses are obtained for different contents of Mn according to the temperature used for the synthesis suggesting that the reaction between Mn and Fe is not a simple redox reaction. The content of Mn necessary to decolourize a glass made at 1200°C is much lower than the one at 1550°C. Finally, annealing an uncoloured glass in air leads to the reappearance of the pink colouration characteristic of the presence of Mn3+.The present set of glasses synthesized in variable conditions helps deciphering the complexity of colour making in ancient times. The effect of temperature combined with atmosphere and glass composition might provide clues to the understanding of ancient glass technology.

Abstract

International audience; The perovskite structure type ABO3, which is adopted by a large variety of materials of geological and technological interest, has been extensively investigated in the past decades. Among the interesting compounds the CaSnO3 perovskite has received increasing attention either for its use as analogue for the mantle material (Redfern & al. 2011) or for its wide range of potential applications such as dielectric bodies, gas sensors and anode materials for Li-ion batteries (Cheng & Lu 2008). When doped with a trivalent rare earth element (REE3+), the CaSnO3 perovskite exhibits promising luminescence properties (Lu & al. 2005 ; Orsi Gordo & al. 2015). However, the exact distribution of the REE3+ between the two potential substitution sites is yet not completely understood. Although it could yield better insights on these luminescence properties. This study thus focuses on the determination of the Nd3+ distribution in the CaSnO3 perovskite.Ceramics have been sintered at high temperature (1550°C) for a wide range of composition (1-x)CaSnO3-xNd2O3 (with 0≤x≤0.7). X-ray diffractometers have been measured in the 2θ range 10°-110°. Rietveld refinements of the structures have been performed using Fullprof. Raman spectra have been measured using a 477 nm laser in order to reduce the presence of a fluorescence signal. It is shown that CaSnO3 can incorporate a large amount (up to x≈0.5) of Nd, at the difference with CaZrO3 that can only accommodate up to x≈0.35 in the system (1-x)CaZrO3-xNd2O3 (Larguem, 2006). For x≤0.5, the unit cell parameters were obtained using the Treor software, and the space groups were determined in an orthorhombic system using Checkcell. It is observed that the unit cell parameters increase linearly with the amount of incorporated Nd. Below x=0.3, the X-ray patterns are indexed in the orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Over this value, the appearance of new reflections leads to a lowering of the symmetry to the Pmmn space group. This result suggests a phase transition induced by the Nd incorporation. On the whole range of compositions, Raman vibration modes are strongly affected by the Nd incorporation. An important broadening of almost all the vibrational bands and a shift of some of them are observed. Substitutions of divalent and tetravalent cations on A and B sites have produced similar effects on Raman spectra of the solid solution systems (SrxCa1-x)ZrO3, Ca(ZrySn1-y)O3 (Tarrida & al. 2009) . Combining Rietveld refinement on the different samples and Raman spectra analysis, the modifications of the CaSnO3 structure in presence of Nd3+ are consistent with a majority of Nd3+ substituting Ca2+ in the A site. A slight proportion of Nd3+ however substitutes Sn4+ in the B site. The data obtained in this study complement the existing literature on the substitution of trivalent cations in the perovskite structure especially by evidencing a phase transition, although a linear evolution of the unit cell parameters is observed. Abstract

Samples of calcium stannate perovskite (CaSnO3) doped with a variable Nd content were synthesized by solid-state reaction in the system (1 − x)CaSnO3 − xNd2O3. The synthesized compounds were characterized by means of electron microprobe, powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and µ-Raman spectroscopy. The incorporation of Nd in the CaSnO3Pbnm structure leads to the formation of a complex (Ca1 − 2x Nd2x)(Sn1 − xCax)O3 perovskite. The A sublattice contains a random distribution of Ca and Nd in the whole range of composition of this system. For x < 0.28, the structure is Pbnm with Ca and Sn randomly distributed in the B sublattice. For x > 0.28 a symmetry change occurs; the structure turns into rock salt type P21/n. In this latter case half of the octahedral sites are fully occupied by Sn and the other half is randomly occupied by Sn and Ca. For x = 0.28, both structures are present in the sample. The presence of a Raman two modes behavior of A1g symmetry located near 700 cm− 1 coupled with the continuous linear evolution of the lattice parameters with Nd incorporation supports the proposed substitution mechanism. Abstract

The so-called "browning phenomenon" is a particular pathology that concerns Mn-bearing medieval glasses that have been exposed to weath-ering conditions. It leads to the appearance of brown stains that hinders, sometimes completely, light transmission through the stained-glass windows, the artefacts ending up illegible. Visual and chemical character-ization of the pathology was performed as to optimize the diagnosis of darkened glasses. The leached layer and the Mn-inclusions were studied to a micrometric scale in order to identify the oxidation state and the atomic environment of manganese ions. In parallel, a review of the exist-ing treatments was performed in order to validate different existing proto-cols previously applied. New tests were conducted in order to provide a better understanding of the possible effects induced on historical glasses by the application of reducing agents., Sous l'effet de l'environnement, certains verres médiévaux contenant du manganèse développent une pathologie communément appelée « phéno-mène de brunissement » qui se révèle par l'apparition de taches brunes. Il en résulte une perte importante et parfois totale de la transparence du vitrail, ce qui rend l'oeuvre illisible. Une caractérisation visuelle et chimique de vingt-deux verres historiques a été réalisée afin d'optimiser les critères permettant le diagnostic de cette pathologie. Les phases d'altération ont également été étudiées à l'échelle micrométrique afin de déterminer le degré d'oxydation et l'environnement du manganèse. En parallèle, une synthèse des traitements existants a été menée et six d'entre eux ont été testés afin de valider les protocoles mis en place lors de précédentes études et de mieux comprendre les différents effets induits par l'utilisation d'agents réducteurs.

Abstract

International audience; Recent findings in the city of Reims have lead to the discovery of manufactured bone objects coloured in green throughout their entire volume. In order to discover the intentional nature of the colouration and to propose a colouration mechanism, modern ox bones have been coloured in the laboratory. Bones with a hue similar to that of the archaeological artefacts have been obtained by boiling in an acidic brine in a copper vessel. A combination of infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope observations did not reveal the speciation of copper, but allowed us to validate the colouration process and to discuss the intentional origin of the colouration.
