Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show direct evidence for charge transfer between adsorbed molecules and metal substrates, i.e., chemisorption of CO on Pt(111) and Pt–Sn/Pt(111) 2 × 2 surfaces. The observed band structures show a unique signature of charge transfer as CO atoms are adsorbed, revealing the roles of specific orbital characters participating in the chemisorption process. As the coverage of CO increases, the degree of charge transfer between CO and Pt shows a clear difference to that of Pt–Sn. With comparison to density functional theory calculation results, the observed distinct features in the band structure are interpreted as back-donation bonding states formed between the Pt molecular orbital and the 2π orbital of CO. Furthermore, the change in the surface charge concentration, measured from the Fermi surface area, shows that the Pt surface has a larger charge concentration change than the Pt–Sn surface upon CO adsorption. The differences between Pt and Pt–Sn surfaces are due to the effect of Pt–Sn intermetallic bonding on the interaction of CO with the surface.

This work focuses on the mechanisms of interfacial processes at the surface of amorphous silicon thin-film electrodes in organic carbonate electrolytes to unveil the origins of the inherent nonpassivating behavior of silicon anodes in Li-ion batteries. Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and infrared near-field scanning optical microscopy were used to investigate the formation, evolution, and chemical composition of the surface layer formed on Si upon cycling. We found that the chemical composition and thickness of the solid/electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer continuously change during the charging/discharging cycles. This SEI layer "breathing" effect is directly related to the formation of lithium ethylene dicarbonate (LiEDC) and LiPF6 salt decomposition products during silicon lithiation and their subsequent disappearance upon delithiation. The detected appearance and disappearance of LiEDC and LiPF6 decomposition compounds in the SEI layer are directly linked with the observed interfacial instability and poor passivating behavior of the silicon anode.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed during the cycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) by decomposition of electrolyte molecules has key impact on device performance. However, the detailed decomposition process and distribution of products remain a mystery due to the wide variety of electrochemical pathways and the lack of facile analytical methods for chemical characterization of SEIs. In this report, a gradient polarity solvent wash technique involving the use of solvents with gradually increased polarities is employed to sequentially remove different SEI components from electrode surfaces. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is utilized to characterize the SEI composition. The impacts of electrolyte additives and discharge rates over SEI formation are illustrated. This study presents a new concept of rationally controlled solvent wash technique for electrode surface analysis that can selectively remove targeted components. The findings in this study provide experimental support for the slow charge formation processes commonly employed for LIBs in industry.

The surface chemical states of Pd(100) during CO oxidation were investigated using ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. Under the reactant ratio of CO/O 2 = 0.1, i.e. an oxygen-rich reaction condition, the formation of surface oxides was observed with the onset of CO oxidation reaction at T = 525 K. As the reactant ratio (CO/O 2 ) increased from 0.1 to 1.0, ∼ 90 % surface oxides remains on surface during the reaction. Upon the formation of surface oxides, the core level shift of oxygen gas phase peak was observed, indicating that change of surface work function. As CO oxidation takes places, i.e. making a transition from CO covered surface to the oxidic surface, the work functions of surface oxide on Pd(100) and Pt(110) display opposite behavior.

Achieving a molecular-level understanding of interfacial (photo)electrochemical processes is essential in order to tailor novel and highly-performing catalytic systems. The corresponding recent development of in situ and operando tools has posed new challenges on experimental architectures. In this study, we use ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) to probe the solid/liquid electrified interface of a polycrystalline Pt sample in contact with an alkaline electrolyte during hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Using the “dip-and-pull” technique to probe the interface through a thin liquid layer generated on the sample surface, we observe that the electrolyte meniscus becomes unstable under sustained driving of an electrolyte-consuming reaction (such as water oxidation). The addition of an electrochemically inert supporting electrolyte mitigates this issue, maintaining a stable meniscus layer for prolonged reaction times. In contrast, for processes in which the electrolyte is replenished in the reaction pathway (i.e. water reduction in alkaline conditions), we find that the solid/liquid interface remains stable without addition of a secondary supporting electrolyte. The approach described in this work allows the extension of operando AP-XPS capabilities using the “dip-and-pull” method to a broader class of reactions consuming ionic species during complex interfacial faradaic processes.

The physico-chemical properties of poly (1-pyrenemethyl methacrylate) (PPy) are presented with respect to its use as a binder in a Si composite anode for Li-ion batteries. PPy thin-films on Si(100) wafer and Cu model electrodes are shown to exhibit superior adhesion as compared to conventional polyvinylidene difluoride (PVdF) binder. Electrochemical testing of the model bi-layer PPy/Si(100) electrodes in a standard organic carbonate electrolyte reveal higher electrolyte reduction current and an overall irreversible cathodic charge consumption during initial cycling versus the uncoated Si electrode. The PPy thin-film is also shown to impede lithiation of the underlying Si. XAS, AFM, TGA and ATR-FTIR analysis indicated that PPy binder is both chemically and electrochemically stable in the cycling potential range however significant swelling is observed due to a selective uptake of diethyl carbonate (DEC) from the electrolyte. The increased concentration of DEC and depletion of ethylene carbonate (EC) at the Si/PPy interface leads to continuous decomposition of the electrolyte and results in non-passivating behavior of the Si(100)/PPy electrode as compared to pristine silicon. Consequently, PPy binder improves the mechanical integrity of composite Si anodes but it influences mass transport at the Si(100)/PPy interface and alters electrochemical response of silicon during cycling in an adverse manner.

Recent advances of ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) have enabled the chemical composition and the electrical potential profile at a liquid/electrode interface under electrochemical reaction conditions to be directly probed. In this work, we apply this operando technique to study the surface chemical composition evolution on a Co metal electrode in 0.1 M KOH aqueous solution under various electrical biases. It is found that an ∼12.2 nm-thick layer of Co(OH)2 forms at a potential of about -0.4 VAg/AgCl, and upon increasing the anodic potential to about +0.4 VAg/AgCl, this layer is partially oxidized into cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH). A CoOOH/Co(OH)2 mixture layer is formed on the top of the electrode surface. Finally, the oxidized surface layer can be reduced to Co0 at a cathodic potential of -1.35 VAg/Cl. These observations indicate that the ultrathin layer containing cobalt oxyhydroxide is the active phase for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on a Co electrode in an alkaline electrolyte, consistent with previous studies.

Understanding the surface chemistry of electrocatalysts in operando can bring insight into the reaction mechanism, and ultimately the design of more efficient materials for sustainable energy storage and conversion. Recent progress in synchrotron based X-ray spectroscopies for in operando characterization allows us to probe the solid/liquid interface directly while applying an external potential, applied here to the model system of Pt in alkaline electrolyte for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We employ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) to identify the oxidation and reduction of Pt-oxides and hydroxides on the surface as a function of applied potential, and further assess the potential for hydrogen adsorption and absorption (hydride formation) during and after the HER. This new window into the surface chemistry of Pt in alkaline electrolyte brings insight into the nature of the rate limiting step, the extent of H ad/absorption, and its persistence at more anodic potentials.

When the surface temperature reaches the activation temperature for CO oxidation under elevated pressure condition, both the -phase of PtO2 oxide and chemisorbed oxygen are formed simultaneously on the surface. Due to exothermic nature of CO oxidation, the temperature of Pt surface increases as CO oxidation takes places. As the CO/O2 ratio increases, the production of CO2 increases continuously and the surface temperature also increases. Interestingly, during the mass transfer limiting regions, the amount of surface oxide changes little while the chemisorbed oxygen is being reduced. .

Photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising pathway for the direct conversion of renewable solar energy to easy to store and use chemical energy. The performance of a photoelectrochemical device is determined in large part by the heterogeneous interface between the photoanode and the electrolyte, which we here characterize directly under operating conditions using interface-specific probes. Utilizing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as a noncontact probe of local electrical potentials, we demonstrate direct measurements of the band alignment at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface of an operating hematite/KOH photoelectrochemical cell as a function of solar illumination, applied potential, and doping. We provide evidence for the absence of in-gap states in this system, which is contrary to previous measurements using indirect methods, and give a comprehensive description of shifts in the band positions and limiting processes during the photoelectrochemical reaction.

While silicon is the most promising next-generation anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), silicon electrodes exhibit significant capacity fade with cycling. A common hypothesis is that the capacity loss is due to the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forming in the first cycle and becoming destabilized by large cyclic volume changes. A cell for in situ attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with controllable penetration depth was used to study the chemistry at the electrode-electrolyte interface. The SEI product precursors at the interface were successfully identified and differentiated from free or solvated solvent molecules in the bulk electrolyte. Intriguingly, for the most common electrolyte consisting of ethylene carbonate and diethyl carbonate, ethylene carbonate was found to directly reduce to lithium ethylene dicarbonate on the lithiated silicon surface and diethyl carbonate to selectively reduce to diethyl 2,5-dioxahexane dicarboxylate on the surface of the native silicon-oxide film. Understanding this surface dependence of the SEI composition is critical to tuning the silicon electrode surface condition and, ultimately, enhancing the performance of future LIBs. The electrochemical double layer plays a critical role in electrochemical processes. Whilst there have been many theoretical models predicting structural and electrical organization of the electrochemical double layer, the experimental verification of these models has been challenging due to the limitations of available experimental techniques. The induced potential drop in the electrolyte has never been directly observed and verified experimentally, to the best of our knowledge. In this study, we report the direct probing of the potential drop as well as the potential of zero charge by means of ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy performed under polarization conditions. By analyzing the spectra of the solvent (water) and a spectator neutral molecule with numerical simulations of the electric field, we discern the shape of the electrochemical double layer profile. In addition, we determine how the electrochemical double layer changes as a function of both the electrolyte concentration and applied potential.

The key factor in long-term use of batteries is the formation of an electrically insulating solid layer that allows lithium ion transport but stops further electrolyte redox reactions on the electrode surface, hence solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). We have studied a common electrolyte, 1.0 M LiPF6/ethylene carbonate (EC)/diethyl carbonate (DEC), reduction products on crystalline silicon (Si) electrodes in a lithium (Li) half-cell system under reaction conditions. We employed in situ sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) with interface sensitivity in order to probe the molecular composition of the SEI surface species under various applied potentials where electrolyte reduction is expected. We found that, with a Si(100)-hydrogen terminated wafer, a Si-ethoxy (Si-OC2H5) surface intermediate forms due to DEC decomposition. Our results suggest that the SEI surface composition varies depending on the termination of Si surface, i.e., the acidity of the Si surface. We provide the evidence of specific chemical composition of the SEI on the anode surface under reaction conditions. This supports an electrochemical electrolyte reduction mechanism in which the reduction of the DEC molecule to an ethoxy moiety plays a key role. These findings shed new light on the formation mechanism of SEI on Si anodes in particular and on SEI formation in general.

The formation of passive films on electrodes due to electrolyte decomposition significantly affects the reversibility of Li-ion batteries (LIBs); however, understanding of the electrolyte decomposition process is still lacking. The decomposition products of ethylene carbonate (EC)-based electrolytes on Sn and Ni electrodes are investigated in this study by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The reference compounds, diethyl 2,5-dioxahexane dicarboxylate (DEDOHC) and polyethylene carbonate (poly-EC), were synthesized, and their chemical structures were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Assignment of the vibration frequencies of these compounds was assisted by quantum chemical (Hartree-Fock) calculations. The effect of Li-ion solvation on the FTIR spectra was studied by introducing the synthesized reference compounds into the electrolyte. EC decomposition products formed on Sn and Ni electrodes were identified as DEDOHC and poly-EC by matching the features of surface species formed on the electrodes with reference spectra. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of accounting for the solvation effect in FTIR analysis of the decomposition products forming on LIB electrodes. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

A homologous series of propylene carbonate (PC) analog solvents with increasing length of linear alkyl substitutes were synthesized and used as co-solvents with PC for graphite-based lithium-ion half cells. A graphite anode reaches a capacity of around 310 mAh/g in PC and its analog co-solvents, with 99.95 percent Coulombic efficiency, similar to the values obtained with ethylene carbonate-based electrolytes. Solvent interaction with the graphite anode and subsequent decomposition determines the graphite anode performance. Gaseous products from cyclic carbonates with short alkyl chains cause exfoliation of the graphite anode; solvents with longer alkyl chains are able to prevent graphite exfoliation when used as co-solvents with PC. The PC co-solvents compete for solvation of the Li ion with the PC solvent, delaying PC co-intercalation. Reduction products of PC on a graphite surface via a single-electron path form a stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI), which allows the reversible cycling of graphite. © 2013 The Electrochemical Society.

We have investigated the segregation of Pt atoms in the surfaces of Pt-Ni nanoparticles, using Modified Embedded Atom Model potentials and the Monte Carlo method. The nanoparticles are assumed to have disordered fcc configurations at two fixed overall concentrations (50 at. percent Pt and 75 at. percent Pt). We use four kinds of nanoparticle shapes [cube, tetrahedron, octahedron, and cubo-octahedron] terminated by {111} and {100} facets to examine the extent of the Pt segregation to the nanoparticle surfaces and determine the equilibrium structures of Pt-Ni nanoparticles at T=600 K. The model particles contain between 560 and 4631 atoms (particle size ranging from 2.5 to 5 nm). Our results imply that a complete {100}-facet reconstruction could make the cubo-octahendral Pt-Ni nanoparticles most energetically favorable, consistent with experimental observations. We predict that at 600 K due to segregation the equilibrium Pt50Ni50 nanoparticles with fewer than 2000 atoms and Pt75Ni25 nanoparticles with fewer than 4000 atoms would achieve a surface-sandwich structure, in which the Pt atoms are enriched in the outermost and third atomic shells while the Ni atoms are enriched in the second atomic shell. We also find that due to an order-disorder transition the Pt50Ni50 cubo-octahedral nanoparticles containing more than 2000 atoms would form a core-shell structure with a Pt-enriched surface and a Pt-deficient homogenous core.

An urachal cyst is a sinus remaining from the allantois during embryogenesis which is rarely manifested in adults. The urachus is an embryologic remnant which degenerates after the birth. Defective obliteration of the urachus leads to urachal abnormalities. Urachal cyst is a rare pathology in adult women, and this pathology should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen. Xanthogranulomatous cystitis (XC) is a benign disease of unknown etiology. The clinical manifestations of these are nonspecific such as lower abdominal pain, umbilical discharge with occasional hematuria. Urachal lesions present with persistent umbilical drainage in infants and newborn. However, in 35% cases, enclosed urachal cyst or infected urachal cyst (abscess) manifests without having umbilical discharge. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging are of little help to the identification of these preoperatively. Here, we present a rare case of urachal cyst with XC in 30-year-old female which has produced diagnostic dilemma.

Small Cell Carcinoma (SCC) of the salivary gland is a rare and aggressive tumour accounting for about less than 1% of the salivary gland tumours. Submandibular gland involvement is extremely rare. These tumours frequently present with metastasis to lymph node and distant organs. We report a case of a 30-year-old male patient who presented with a swelling on the left side of the face below the jaw and the floor of the mouth. The tumour was excised followed by histopathological evaluation and diagnosed as SCC of left submandibular gland. Immunohistochemistry was positive for pan cytokeratin, synaptophysin, chromogranin, Ki-67, CK5/6, and negative for Thyroid Transcription Factor (TTF-1) which confirmed that the tumour was SCC of submandibular salivary gland.
