16. Teacher's Communication of Differential Performance Expectations for Boys and Girls.

Abstract

To determine whether teachers treat boys and girls differently with respect to providing response opportunities and giving feedback reactions, five teacher's arithmetic sessions and six teacher's reading sessions were observed and tape recorded three times over a four-week period. Differences in (a) quality of response opportunity for boys and girls, and (b) teacher feedback reactions with boys and girls were compared by means of the correlated t test. The findings indicate that at least with respect to two teacher behaviors, response opportunities and feedback reactions, boys and girls are treated similarly in both arithmetic and reading instruction in grade three. The themes of the articles include the following: the implementation of the Right to Read program in an elementary school; a diagnostic reading center which is an alternative, a supplement, and a prod for a cooperative effort to help children read; the five steps through which students progress in the Right to Read diagnostic-prescriptive approach to learning how to read; and the International Reading Association's local and international efforts to improve reading abilities of students. Abstract

AbstractObjective:To reduce both inappropriate testing for and diagnosis of healthcare-onset (HO) Clostridioides difficileinfections (CDIs).Design:We performed a retrospective analysis of C. difficiletesting from hospitalized children before (October 2017–October 2018) and after (November 2018–October 2020) implementing restrictive computerized provider order entry (CPOE).Setting:Study sites included hospital A (a ∼250-bed freestanding children’s hospital) and hospital B (a ∼100-bed children’s hospital within a larger hospital) that are part of the same multicampus institution.Methods:In October 2018, we implemented CPOE. No testing was allowed for infants aged ≤12 months, approval of the infectious disease team was required to test children aged 13–23 months, and pathology residents’ approval was required to test all patients aged ≥24 months with recent laxative, stool softener, or enema use. Interrupted time series analysis and Mann-Whitney Utest were used for analysis.Results:An interrupted time series analysis revealed that from October 2017 to October 2020, the numbers of tests ordered and samples sent significantly decreased in all age groups (P< .05). The monthly median number of HO-CDI cases significantly decreased after implementation of the restrictive CPOE in children aged 13–23 months (P< .001) and all ages combined (P= .003).Conclusion:Restrictive CPOE for CDI in pediatrics was successfully implemented and sustained. Diagnostic stewardship for CDI is likely cost-saving and could decrease misdiagnosis, unnecessary antibiotic therapy, and overestimation of HO-CDI rates.

40. Reproductive ecology of Littorina rudis (Maton) in the estuarine Firth of Forth

Abstract

Reproductive ecology of Littorina rudis (Maton) was investigated at three localities in the Firth of Forth from virtually open sea at Aberdour to near the up-estuary limit of the species at Culross some 27 km west. Striking inter-site differences in abundance, population size-composition and minimum size at maturity were observed. Maximum brood-pouch counts (up to 612 embryos per female) occurred in late spring/early summer and minima(including several empty) occurred in late summer/early autumn. These seasonal changes in embryo numbers were more prounced at the estuarine than the marine sites. Corresponding changes occurred in the condition of ovaries and testes. Seasonal fluctuations in body protein, energy and C : N ratios were also related to reproductive condition. Numbers of embryos contained in brood-pouches on the upper shore at Aberdour were consistently 2 - 3 X those at Torrybay. Values on the lower shore at Aberdour and at Culross fell between these extremes. Embryo weight between sites varied significantly, differences in weight tending to compensate for varying numbers. Complete development of eggs ill vitro at 32 % salinity took 41 - 115 days between 5 - 15°C indicating a Q10 of 3 between 5 - 15°C. Embryos failed to develop at 20°C. Successful development was severely restricted at salinities of less than 20 - 24 % at 10°C. Newly released juveniles were less tolerant of reduced salinity than adults on the same shore. L^. rudis from the estuarine sites of Torrybay and Culross tolerated low salinities better than those at the marine Aberdour. Cyclical patterns of juvenile release were observed in a laboratory tide tank with maximum release close to successive new moons. Discrepancies in reproductive production estimates from brood-pouch loads and from juvenile release indicated that not all eggs entering the brood-pouch complete development. A tentative model to predict release from brood-pouch loads is proposed. Estimated production of juveniles at Torrybay (63.31 kJ m-2 y-1) was more than 2 X that on the upper shore at Aberdour (27.08 kJ m-2 y-1) and 16 X that on the lower (3.86 kJ m-2 y-1). At Torrybay an estimated 29% of the biomass was turned over annually as newborn compared with 14.8% and 10.3% on the upper and lower shore respectively at Aberdour.

Abstract

The role of sporalen cross-links in the binding and melting domains in the binding and initiation of T7 RNA polymerase (RNAP) was analyzed after site-specific psoralen cross-linking or mono addition. Analysis of the mechanisms of T7 RNAP transcription initiation by site-specific psoralen cross-linking indicated the presence of normal polymerase binding after geometrical alterations in -2/-1 or -4/-3 cross-links. However, polymerase binding and affinity was affected by -14/-13 cross-links due to severe conformational alterations in the binding domains.

Abstract

The mechanism of unwinding of promoter DNA during the transition from closed to open complexes of T7 RNA polymerase was investigated in real-time by fluorescence spectroscopy. Findings indicated that facile base pair disruption at -1 is sufficient for transcription initiation. It is suggested that the polymerase makes contacts at or near -1 and -6 resulting in untwisting of these base pairs thus producing at least two base pair disruption events at -1 and -6 which are followed by bidirectional propagation to -4.
