Abstract

Distributed sensors based on phase-optical time-domain reflectometry (phase-OTDR) are suitable for aircraft health monitoring due to electromagnetic interference immunity, small dimensions, low weight and flexibility. These features allow the fiber embedment into aircraft structures in a nearly non-intrusive way to measure vibrations along its length. The capability of measuring vibrations on avionics structures is of interest for what concerns the study of material fatigue or the occurrence of undesirable phenomena like flutter. In this work, we employed the phase-OTDR technique to measure vibrations ranging from some dozens of Hz to kHz in two layers of composite material board with embedded polyimide coating 0.24 numerical aperture single-mode optical fiber., QC 20171010

44. Optical Sensing Systems Based on Depressed Cladding Erbium Doped Fiber.

Abstract

This work describes new types of optical sensing systems based on Depressed Cladding Erbium Doped Fiber (DC-EDF). Due to the amplification characteristics developed for S-Band uses, this sensing system has high sensitivity, high dynamic range and wide bandwidth. It can be used to monitor static parameters such as force, pressure, displacement and dynamic parameters used in acoustics and vibrations. Two types of sensing systems with different approaches have been studied: the amplifier and the laser sensor. We describe the performance of these sensing systems in S band (1490 and 1510 nm) in static and dynamic conditions. We also appointed for some sensing applications for many areas of interest, such as, electric energy and civil engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The authors present a comparative analysis between a triple-band S-C-L erbium-doped fibre amplifier and a commercial semiconductor optical amplifier in a CWDM application scenario. Both technologies were characterised for gain and noise figures from 1480 to 1610 nm (S, C and L bands) and their systemic performances were evaluated in terms of bit error rate measurements for a wide range of optical power levels. Abstract

This work describes a new type of acoustic sensor based on depressed cladding erbium doped fiber (DC-EDF) ring laser. Due to the fiber amplification based on bending characteristics developed for S-Band uses, this sensor has high sensitivity, broad dynamic range and wide bandwidth. It can be used to monitor parameters such as frequency, vibration and acoustics. We describe the sensor characterization in S band in frequencies from 5 Hz to 50 kHz.
