Abstract

Composite powders were synthesized from the water solutions of sodium silicate and different calcium salts (nitrate, chloride, and acetate) at a Ca/Si molar ratio of 1.0. According to the XRD data, all the synthesized powders included hydrated calcium silicate Ca1,5SiO3,5·xH2O (Ca/Si molar ratio = 1.5) and calcium carbonate CaCO3 (Ca/Si molar ratio = ∞). The presence of H2SiO3 or SiO2·xH2O in the synthesized powders was assumed to be due to the difference between the Ca/Si molar ratio of 1.0 specified by the synthesis protocol and the molar ratio of the detected products. Reaction by-products (sodium nitrate NaNO3, sodium chloride NaCl, and sodium acetate NaCH3COO) were also found in the synthesized powders after filtration and drying. According to the XRD data phase composition of all powders after washing four times consisted of the quasi-amorphous phase and calcium carbonate in the form of calcite. Calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite was detected in powders synthesized from calcium chloride CaCl2 and calcium nitrate Ca(NO3)2 before and after washing. Synthesized powders containing reaction by-products and washed powders were used for the preparation of ceramics at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C. The phase composition of the ceramic samples prepared from the washed powders and powder containing NaCl after firing at 900 and 1000 °C consisted of β-wollastonite β-CaSiO3, and, after firing at 1100 °C, consisted of both β-wollastonite β-CaSiO3 and pseudo-wollastonite α-CaSiO3. The phase composition of the ceramic samples prepared from powders containing sodium nitrate NaNO3 and sodium acetate NaCH3COO after firing at 900, 1000, and 1100 °C consisted of calcium sodium silicates, i.e., Na2Ca2Si3O9 (combeite) and Na2Ca3Si2O8. Synthesized and washed composite powders can be used for the preparation of biocompatible materials, in the technology of construction materials, and as components of lunar soil simulants. Abstract

Solid solutions Nd2−xSrxNiO4±δ (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.2, 1.4) with a K2NiF4 structure can be obtained from freeze-dried precursors. The end members of this series can be obtained at T ≥ 1000 °C only, while complex oxides with x = 1; 1.5 are formed at T ≥ 700 °C. Thermal analysis revealed the two stages of Nd2−xSrxNiO4±δ thermal reduction in a 10%H2/Ar gas mixture that was completed at 900 °C. For x < 0.2, the reduction products demonstrated an exsolution-like morphology with Ni nanoparticles allocated at the surface of oxide grains. As-obtained nanocomposites with x = 0 and x > 1 revealed the outstanding catalytic activity and selectivity in the dry reforming of the methane (DRM) reaction at 800 °C with CH4 conversion close to the thermodynamic values. The appearance of two different maxima of the catalytic properties of Ni/(Nd2O3,SrCO3) nanocomposites could be affiliated with the domination of the positive contributions of Nd2O3 and SrCO3, respectively. Abstract

Microheaters with long-term stability are crucial for the development of a variety of microelectronic devices operated at high temperatures. Structured Ta/Pt bilayers, in which the Ta sublayer ensures high adhesion of the Pt resistive layer, are widely used to create microheaters. Herein, a comprehensive study of the microstructure of Ta/Pt films using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with local elemental analysis reveals the twofold nature of Ta after annealing. The main fraction of Ta persists in the form of tantalum oxide between the Pt resistive layer and the alumina substrate. Such a sublayer hampers Pt recrystallization and grain growth in bilayered Ta/Pt films in comparison with pure Pt films. Tantalum is also observed inside the Pt grains as individual Ta nanoparticles, but their volume fraction is only about 2%. Microheaters based on the 10 nm Ta/90 nm Pt bilayers after pre-annealing exhibit long-term stability with low resistance drift at 500 °C (less than 3%/month). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to clarify the role of R2O3 in the metal-oxide catalysts derived from complex oxide precursors, a series of R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 (R = Nd, Sm, Eu) complex oxides was obtained. A significant systematic increase in the orthorhombic distortion of the R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 structure (K2NiF4 type, Cmce) from Nd to Eu correlates with a corresponding decrease in their ionic radii. A reduction of R1.5Ca0.5NiO4 in the Ar/H2 gas mixture at 800 °C causes a formation of dense agglomerates of CaO and R2O3 coated with spherical 25–30 nm particles of Ni metal. The size of metal particles and oxide agglomerates is similar in all Ni/(R2O3,CaO) composites in the study. Their morphology is rather similar to the products of redox exsolution obtained by the partial reduction of complex oxides. All obtained composites demonstrated a significant catalytic activity in the dry reforming (DRM) and partial oxidation (POM) of methane at 700–800 °C. A systematic decrease in the DRM catalytic activity of composites from Nd to Eu could be attributed to the basicity reduction of R2O3 components of the composite catalysts. The maximum CH4 conversion in POM reaction was observed for Ni/(Sm2O3,CaO), while the maximum selectivity was demonstrated by Nd2O3-based composite. Abstract

A crystallographic approach to tailoring the morphology and ordering degree of the porous structure of alumina films obtained by anodization of single-crystalline aluminum is discussed. The examination of porous structure of anodic alumina films formed on low-index and vicinal planes of Al single crystals under self-ordering conditions by high-resolution small-angle X-ray scattering revealed the existence of two pore growth directions on vicinal facets. The inclination of channels from the normal to the metal surface is explained by the competitive impact of electromigration driving force and the crystallographic anisotropy of the substrate. It was also shown that pores growing in different directions during anodization retain hexagonal domains with various in-plane orientations. These results for the first time demonstrate the strong correlations between the longitudinal alignment and in-plane packing options of pores in anodic alumina films.

Abstract

Self-organization of pores in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) is a unique phenomenon attracting significant interest from both fundamental and practical points of view. Although the influence of crystallographic orientation of Al substrate on the degree of pore ordering has been clearly demonstrated, the information about the kinetics of self-organization in AAO formed on various low-index facets of Al is absent. Here, the kinetics of pore ordering during anodizing of low-index surfaces of Al single crystals is studied by using the in situsmall-angle X-ray scattering technique. The fastest decrease in the dispersion of pore growth direction is found in the case of anodizing of the Al(100) substrate. To obtain the comparable out-of-plane pore ordering in the case of Al(111) anodizing, the charge density should be doubled. On the contrary, on the Al(111) the fastest kinetics of in-plane orientational pore ordering is observed. The average domain size in the AAO films grown on Al(100) and Al(110) is limited by about 20 lattice periods, whereas the unlimited growth of the domains is observed in the case of the Al(111) substrate. The pore organization into hexagonal domains is found to be much faster than the development of long-range in-plane orientational pore order.

Abstract

The pseudoepitaxial growth of amorphous anodic alumina with ordered porous structure within single crystal grains of aluminum substrates is an amazing feature of the self-organization process, which occurs during anodization. Here, we used single crystal Al(100), Al(110), and Al(111) substrates to inspect the effect of aluminum crystallography on anodization rates and the morphology of the resulting alumina films grown under different anodization conditions. The difference in the kinetics of porous film growth on various substrates is described in terms of the activation barrier of aluminum atom release from the metal surface to the oxide layer. Scanning electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering are applied for quantitative characterization of different kinds of ordering in anodic alumina films. The highest number of straight channels was found in porous anodic alumina grown on Al(100) substrates, whereas Al(111) was proved to induce the best orientational order in anodic alumina with the formation of the single-domain-like structures. Based on the obtained results, possible pathways for crystallographic control of the anodic alumina porous structure for different practical applications are discussed.
