Abstract

Structures' costs continue to rise in lockstep with raw material prices. As a result, finding a sustainable source of building materials should be a top priority. Synthetic fibre was once more commonly used in concrete reinforcement, but natural fibre is gradually gaining popularity. These were used to develop low-cost materials as well as environmentally friendly structures. In recent years, natural fibres have been used in construction for thin parts such as roofing, cladding, and internal and exterior partitioning walls. Aside from that, enforcing a policy encouraging the use of natural fibre as a micro reinforcing composite in lightweight concrete structures is an effective way to reduce environmental damage. The purpose of this research is to determine the flexural and split tensile strength of concrete with 0%, 2%, or 3% coconut coir by weight of cement. Its purpose is to determine whether the fiber-reinforced concrete can withstand the applied load. A three-point bending test and a splitting tensile test (UTM) were also performed on natural fiber-reinforced concrete using a Universal Testing Machine. Abstract

Purpose: This work investigated carboxymethyl hydroxypropyl guar (CMHPG) as a potential base polymer for a fracturing fluid used in deep tight gas wells, synonym to high-temperature reservoirs. Fracturing is a common method to improve oil production by creating fractures in potentially productive reservoirs using fracturing fluids. Fracturing fluids are typically composed of water, sand, proppant, and many different additives to alter the capabilities of the fluid. Design/methodology/approach: A stable high-density fracturing fluid (HDFF) was developed to cope with scorching good temperatures up to 350°F (177°C)as well as to reduce the surface treating pressure. The HDFF consists of NaBr heavy brine, CMHPG, clay stabilizers, and zirconium and borate crosslinkers. A linear gel fluid was prepared by combining NaBr brine with CMHPG before adding the additives. The resulting fluid was then tested using a high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) rheometer. Findings: The results showed that the performance of the HDFF was optimum in an alkaline environment between pH 10 to 12. The efficiency of zirconium and borate crosslinkers were optimum at 0.7 ppm and 1.5 ppt, respectively. Concentrations higher than these values are not only uneconomical but will cause the fluid to be overly crosslinked, consequently reducing efficiency. In actual field operation, this is disastrous when the fluid does not flow to the fracturing column but instead swirls around the drill string as the drill string rotates. On the other hand, a reduction of concentration below the optimum values can cause fluid instability at high temperature reservoirs. Research limitations/implications: The study was limited to using two different kinds of crosslinkers and various concentrations. Future studies can be conducted using other kinds of crosslinkers, as well as an investigation into the effects of varying temperatures, pressures, and pH on the HDFF using CMHPG. Abstract

We demonstrate the potential of nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) in forming ultrashort pulses using a ring cavity thulium-doped fiber laser. A TiO2 polymer composite was transferred onto a microfiber through a spin coating technique to act as a light-absorbing material, saturable absorber (SA). The nonlinear transmission characteristics of this TiO2-SA exhibited 3.8% modulation depth and 17 MW/cm2 saturation intensity at 1.92 µm wavelength. At 1587 mW pump power, the central wavelength, average output power, pulse duration, peak power, and pulse energy were 1925.6 nm, 126.8 mW, 1.5 ps, 6.45 kW, and 11 nJ, respectively. The fabricated TiO2-SA displayed a wide pump power range of fundamental mode-locking at 11.53 MHz without any sign of laser-induced damage threshold or pulse breaking effect. This work has shown the potential use of nanosized TiO2-SA for fabricating broadband nonlinear photonic devices.

Abstract

Background The CRASH-3 trial hypothesised that timely tranexamic acid (TXA) treatment might reduce deaths from intracranial bleeding after traumatic brain injury (TBI). To explore the mechanism of action of TXA in TBI, we examined the timing of its effect on death. Methods The CRASH-3 trial randomised 9202 patients within 3 h of injury with a GCS score ≤ 12 or intracranial bleeding on CT scan and no significant extracranial bleeding to receive TXA or placebo. We conducted an exploratory analysis of the effects of TXA on all-cause mortality within 24 h of injury and within 28 days, excluding patients with a GCS score of 3 or bilateral unreactive pupils, stratified by severity and country income. We pool data from the CRASH-2 and CRASH-3 trials in a one-step fixed effects individual patient data meta-analysis. Results There were 7637 patients for analysis after excluding patients with a GCS score of 3 or bilateral unreactive pupils. Of 1112 deaths, 23.3% were within 24 h of injury (early deaths). The risk of early death was reduced with TXA (112 (2.9%) TXA group vs 147 (3.9%) placebo group; risk ratio [RR] RR 0.74, 95% CI 0.58–0.94). There was no evidence of heterogeneity by severity (p = 0.64) or country income (p = 0.68). The risk of death beyond 24 h of injury was similar in the TXA and placebo groups (432 (11.5%) TXA group vs 421 (11.7%) placebo group; RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.69–1.12). The risk of death at 28 days was 14.0% in the TXA group versus 15.1% in the placebo group (544 vs 568 events; RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.83–1.03). When the CRASH-2 and CRASH-3 trial data were pooled, TXA reduced early death (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.70–0.87) and death within 28 days (RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.82–0.94). Conclusions Tranexamic acid reduces early deaths in non-moribund TBI patients regardless of TBI severity or country income. The effect of tranexamic acid in patients with isolated TBI is similar to that in polytrauma. Treatment is safe and even severely injured patients appear to benefit when treated soon after injury. Abstract

Fibroma of the Tendon Sheath (FTS) is a rare soft tissue tumor commonly found in upper extremities. Usually, the lesions occur in wrists and hands. There are only a few cases of fibroma of the tendon sheath arising from the lower extremities have been reported. This case report describes a rare presentation of painful FTS that arises from flexor hallucis longus at the plantar aspect of the forefoot in a middle age lady. Abstract

In this study, the experiment on the modification of the photoanode with organic polymer material as copolymer template for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications has been conducted. The two organic copolymer templates are polystyrene sphere (PS) and poly[2- methoxy-5(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV). The modification photoanodes were made using Dr. Blade’s method. These organic copolymer templates were added to improve the surface of the mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) layer, which is used as the main component in DSSC photoanode. The unmodified TiO2 photoanode has poor aggregation and porosity of TiO2. The addition of either MEH-PPV or PS sphere to the photoanode layer was found to affect the surface of mesoporous TiO2 in terms of porosity, particle size distribution and shape. The analysis of the TiO2 modification was conducted using an image analysis processing method via a 2D scanning electron microscope (SEM) image. The image analysis processing method used was the ImageJ program. The DSSC of modified photoanode is fabricated using metal complex dye, Ruthenium (N719) dye. The data collected from the ImageJ program showed that by adding organic copolymer templates into TiO2, the porosity of TiO2 decreased from 45 % to 42 %. From the photovoltaic analysis obtained, the J-V characteristic is recorded with the photoanode of TiO2 mixed with 1.00 wt% MEH-PPV gave the highest efficiency, which is 0.01 % with the following parameters – Voc = 0.43 V, Jsc = 0.17 mA/cm2 and FF = 0.20. Meanwhile, the photoanode of TiO2 mixed with 0.50 wt% PS sphere gave the highest efficiency which is 0.08 % with the following parameters – Voc = 0.39 V, Jsc = 0.86 mA/cm2 and FF = 0.25.
