The paper is concerned with the finite-time stabilization of a hybrid PDE-ODE system describing the motion of an overhead crane with a flexible cable. The dynamics of the flexible cable is described by the wave equation with a variable coefficient which is an affine function of the curvilinear abscissa along the cable. Using several changes of variables, a backstepping transformation, and a finite-time stable second-order ODE for the dynamics of a conveniently chosen variable, we prove that a global finite-time stabilization occurs for the full system constituted of the platform and the cable. The kernel equations and the finite-time stable ODE are numerically solved in order to compute the nonlinear feedback law, and numerical simulations validating our finite-time stabilization approach are presented., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures

We consider the linear Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation on a rectangle with a left Dirich-let boundary control. Using the flatness approach, we prove the null controllability of this equation and provide a space of analytic reachable states.

It is by now well known that the use of Carleman estimates allows to establish the control-lability to trajectories of nonlinear parabolic equations. However, by this approach, it is not clear how to decide whether a given function is indeed reachable. In this paper, we pursue the study of the reachable states of parabolic equations based on a direct approach using control inputs in Gevrey spaces by considering a nonlinear heat equation in dimension one. The nonlinear part is assumed to be an analytic function of the spatial variable x, the unknown y, and its derivative $\partial$ x y. By investigating carefully a nonlinear Cauchy problem in the spatial variable and the relationship between the jet of space derivatives and the jet of time derivatives, we derive an exact controllability result for small initial and final data that can be extended as analytic functions on some ball of the complex plane. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification: 35K40, 93B05

We consider a linear Korteweg-de Vries equation on a bounded domain with a left Dirichlet boundary control.The controllability to the trajectories of such a system was proved in the last decade by using Carleman estimates.Here, we go a step further by establishing the exact controllability in a space of analytic functions with the aid of the flatness approach.

We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with transparent boundary conditions when small source terms are incorporated in the system. Even if the finite-time stability of the system is not preserved, it is shown here that an exponential convergence towards the steady state still holds with a decay rate which is proportional to the logarithm of the amplitude of the source term. The result is stated for a system with dynamical boundary conditions in order to deal with initial data that are free of any compatibility condition.

We consider a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut as a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. This system of two equations can describe the propagation of waves in both directions, while the single KdV equation is limited to unidirectional waves. We are concerned here with the exact controllability of the Boussinesq system by using some boundary controls. By reducing the controllability problem to a spectral problem which is solved by using the Paley-Wiener method introduced by the third author for KdV, we determine explicitly all the critical lengths for which the exact controllability fails for the linearized system, and give a complete picture of the controllability results with one or two boundary controls of Dirichlet or Neumann type. The extension of the exact controllability to the full Boussinesq system is derived in the energy space in the case of a control of Neumann type. It is obtained by incorporating a boundary feedback in the control in order to ensure a global Kato smoothing effect.

We derive in a direct way the exact controllability of the 1D free Schr\"odinger equation with Dirichlet boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parametrizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". We introduce several mechanisms to dissipate the energy in the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation. We consider either a distributed (localized) feedback law, or a boundary feedback law. In each case, we prove the global wellposedness of the system and the convergence towards a solution of the BBM equation which is null on a band. If the Unique Continuation Property holds for the BBM equation, this implies that the origin is asymp-totically stable for the damped BBM equation.

In a recent paper, the authors investigated the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid, assuming that the flow was irrotational. The aim of the present paper is to pursue this study by considering the more general case of a flow with vorticity. It is shown here that the local controllability of the position and the velocity of the underwater vehicle (a vector in R 12) holds in a flow with vorticity whenever it holds in a flow without vorticity.

We are interested in the determination of the reachable states for the boundary control of the one-dimensional heat equation. We consider either one or two boundary controls. We show that reachable states associated with square integrable controls can be extended to analytic functions onsome square of C, and conversely, that analytic functions defined on a certain disk can be reached by using boundary controlsthat are Gevrey functions of order 2. The method of proof combines the flatness approach with some new Borel interpolation theorem in some Gevrey class witha specified value of the loss in the uniform estimates of the successive derivatives of the interpolating function.

We consider linear one-dimensional parabolic equations with space dependent coefficients that are only measurable and that may be degenerate or singular.Considering generalized Robin-Neumann boundary conditions at both extremities, we prove the null controllability with one boundary control by following the flatness approach, which providesexplicitly the control and the associated trajectory as series. Both the control and the trajectory have a Gevrey regularity in time related to the $L^p$ class of the coefficient in front of $u\_t$.The approach applies in particular to the (possibly degenerate or singular) heat equation $(a(x)u\_x)\_x-u\_t=0$ with $a(x)\textgreater{}0$ for a.e. $x\in (0,1)$ and $a+1/a \in L^1(0,1)$, or to the heat equation with inverse square potential $u\_{xx}+(\mu / |x|^2)u-u\_t=0$with $\mu\ge 1/4$.

We investigate the finite-time stabilization of a tree-shaped network of strings. Transparent boundary conditions are applied at all the external nodes. At any internal node, in addition to the usual continuity conditions, a modified Kirchhoff law incorporating a damping term $\alpha u_t$ with a coefficient $\alpha$ that may depend on the node is considered. We show that for a convenient choice of the sequence of coefficients $\alpha$, any solution of the wave equation on the network becomes constant after a finite time. The condition on the coefficients proves to be sharp at least for a star-shaped tree. Similar results are derived when we replace the transparent boundary condition by the Dirichlet (resp. Neumann) boundary condition at one external node.

We derive in a straightforward way the exact controllability of the 1-D Schrodinger equation with a Dirichlet boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parameterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". This provides an explicit control input achieving the exact controllability in the energy space. As an application, we derive an explicit pair of control inputs achieving the exact steering to zero for a simply-supported beam.

We prove the control and stabilization of the Benjamin-Ono equation in $L^2(\T)$, the lowest regularity where the initial value problem is well-posed. This problem was already initiated in \cite{LinaresRosierBO} where a stronger stabilization term was used (that makes the equation of parabolic type in the control zone). Here we employ a more natural stabilization term related to the $L^2$ norm. Moreover, by proving a theorem of controllability in $L^2$, we manage to prove the global controllability in large time. Our analysis relies strongly on the bilinear estimates proved in \cite{MolinetPilodBO} and some new extension of these estimates established here.

This paper is concerned with the control properties of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation posed on a bounded interval with a distributed control. When the control region is an arbitrary open subdomain, we prove the null controllability of the KdV equation by means of a new Carleman inequality. As a consequence, we obtain a regional controllability result, the state function being controlled on the left part of the complement of the control region. Finally, when the control region is a neighborhood of the right endpoint, an exact controllability result in a weighted L2 space is also established.

In this paper, we consider the wave equation with both a viscous Kelvin-Voigt and frictional damping as a model of viscoelasticity in which we incorporate an internal control with a moving support. We prove the null controllability when the control region, driven by the flow of an ODE, covers all the domain. The proof is based upon the interpretation of the system as, roughly, the coupling of a heat equation with an ordinary differential equation (ODE). The presence of the ODE for which there is no propagation along the space variable makes the controllability of the system impossible when the control is confined into a subset in space that does not move. %Accordingly, we consider the control on a moving support that, along the time interval, covers the whole domain. The null controllability of the system with a moving control is established in using the observability of the adjoint system and some Carleman estimates for a coupled system of a parabolic equation and an ODE with the same singular weight, adapted to the geometry of the moving support of the control. This extends to the multi-dimensional case the results by P. Martin et al. on the one-dimensional case, employing 1-d Fourier analysis techniques.

In this paper, we investigate the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid whose flow is assumed to be irrotational. Taking as control input the flow of the fluid through a part of the boundary of the rigid body, we obtain a finite-dimensional system similar to Kirchhoff laws in which the control input appears through both linear terms (with time derivative) and bilinear terms. Applying Coron's return method, we establish some local controllability results for the position and velocities of the underwater vehicle. Examples with six, four, or only three controls inputs are given for a vehicule with an ellipsoidal shape.

We investigate the finite-time boundary stabilization of a 1-D first order quasilinear hyperbolic system of diagonal form on [0,1]. The dynamics of both boundary controls are governed by a finite-time stable ODE. The solutions of the closed-loop system issuing from small initial data in Lip([0,1]) are shown to exist for all times and to reach the null equilibrium state in finite time. When only one boundary feedback law is available, a finite-time stabilization is shown to occur roughly in a twice longer time. The above feedback strategy is then applied to the Saint-Venant system for the regulation of water flows in a network of canals.

It was proved by Linares and Ortega that the linearized Benjamin-Ono equation posed on a periodic domain T with a distributed control supported on an arbitrary subdomain is exactly controllable and exponentially stabilizable. The aim of this paper is to extend those results to the full Benjamin-Ono equation. A feedback law in the form of a localized damping is incorporated in the equation. A smoothing effect established with the aid of a propagation of regularity property is used to prove the semi-global stabilization in L^2(T) of weak solutions obtained by the method of vanishing viscosity. The local well-posedness and the local exponential stability in H^s(T) are also established for s>1/2 by using the contraction mapping theorem. Finally, the local exact controllability is derived in H^s(T) for s>1/2 by combining the above feedback law with some open loop control.

We consider the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on the one dimensional torus T = R/(2{\pi}Z). We prove a Unique Continuation Property (UCP) for small data in H^1(T) with nonnegative zero means. Next we extend the UCP to certain BBM-like equations, including the equal width wave equation and the KdV-BBM equation. Applications to the stabilization of the above equations are given. In particular, we show that when an internal control acting on a moving interval is applied in BBM equation, then a semiglobal exponential stabilization can be derived in H^s(T) for any s \geq 1. Furthermore, we prove that the BBM equation with a moving control is also locally exactly controllable in H^s(T) for any s \geq 0 and globally exactly controllable in H s (T) for any s \geq 1.

We investigate the internal controllability of the wave equation with structural damping on the one dimensional torus. We assume that the control is acting on a moving point or on a moving small interval with a constant velocity. This paper studies the local exact controllability and the local stabilization of the semilinear Schr\"odinger equation posed on a product of $n$ intervals ($n\ge 1$). Both internal and boundary controls are considered, and the results are given with periodic (resp. Dirichlet or Neumann) boundary conditions. In the case of internal control, we obtain local controllability results which are sharp as far as the localization of the control region and the smoothness of the state space are concerned. It is also proved that for the linear Schr\"odinger equation with Dirichlet control, the exact controllability holds in $H^{-1}(\Omega)$ whenever the control region contains a neighborhood of a vertex.

In this chapter, we consider a class of discrete dynamical systems defined on the homogeneous space associated with a regular tiling of $\R^N$, whose most familiar example is provided by the $N-$dimensional torus $\T ^N$. It is proved that any dynamical system in this class is chaotic in the sense of Devaney, and that it admits at least one positive Lyapunov exponent. Next, a chaos-synchronization mechanism is introduced and used for masking information in a communication setup.

Studied here is the large-time behavior of solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation posed on the right half-line under the effect of a localized damping. Assuming as in \cite{linares-pazoto} that the damping is active on a set $(a_0,+\infty)$ with $a_0>0$, we establish the exponential decay of the solutions in the weighted spaces $L^2((x+1)^mdx)$ for $m\in \N ^*$ and $L^2(e^{2bx}dx)$ for $b>0$ by a Lyapunov approach. The decay of the spatial derivatives of the solution is also derived.

This paper aims at completing an earlier work of Russell and Zhang to study internal control problems for the distributed parameter system described by the Korteweg-de Vries equation on a periodic domain T^1. In their article, Russell and Zhang showed that the system is locally exactly controllable and locally exponentially stabilizable when the control acts on an arbitrary nonempty subdomain of T^1. In this paper, we show that the system is in fact globally exactly controllable and globally exponentially stabilizable. The global exponential stabilizability corresponding to a natural feedback law is first established with the aid of certain properties of propagation of compactness and propagation of regularity in Bourgain spaces for solutions of the associated linear system. Then, using a different feedback law, the resulting closed-loop system is shown to be locally exponentially stable with an arbitrarily large decay rate. A time-varying feedback law is further designed to ensure a global exponential stability with an arbitrary large decay rate.

This paper deals with the regularity of solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi Inequality which arises in H-infinity control. It shows by explicit counterexamples that there are gaps between existence of continuous and locally Lipschitz (positive definite and proper) solutions, and between Lipschitz and continuously differentiable ones.
