15. American Adolescents’ Responses to NASA’s Climate Change Website

Abstract

This is the second of two reports about American adolescents and climate change. In the first report, we described teens’ knowledge, attitudes, and sources of climate change information. In this report, we analyze their responses to one important source of this information –the NASA website climate.NASA.gov. The NASA website is one of the primary sources provided by the federal government to inform the public on the issue of climate change. In this report we assess how adolescents feel about the website, how it affects their climate change knowledge and attitudes, and whether some adolescents are more responsive to the website than others, based on their age, gender and interest in science. The data for the report were gathered in May, 2018, using an online survey with roughly equal numbers of 13-to-18-year-olds (n=1,257). The survey’s design included a visit to the NASA climate change website, climate.nasa,gov, and a split sample: adolescents were randomly assigned to one of two groups, answering half of the knowledge and attitude questions before their website visit and half of these questions afterwards. Abstract

The past several years have witnessed a dramatic increase in young people’s activism on climate change, accompanied by calls for society to act more aggressively to protect their futures. To better understand what young people think and feel about climate change, we surveyed American adolescents, asking what they know, feel and believe about the issue, what questions they have about it, and where they are obtaining their information. This report summarizes the results of the survey and is intended to support efforts to inform and educate American youth about climate change.

Abstract

In 2015 Pope Francis called for global action on climate change, arguing that overconsumption is destroying the Earth and harming the poor, and that humans are morally obligated to respond. Using nationally-representative panel data gathered in the spring and fall of 2015 (n=905), we assessed Americans' exposure and response to this message, examining changes in issue engagement and the public's conceptualization of climate change as a moral issue. The pope reached a broad cross-section of the American public, including people with the full range of beliefs and concern about climate change. Americans became more likely to view climate change as a moral issue, and to recognize that it is real, harmful and worrisome. Exposure to the pope's message was strongly linked to the observed increase in moral issue perceptions, but only indirectly linked to increased issue engagement. The differences in the pope's observed impact may reflect his status as the lone messenger addressing the moral implications of climate change, but only one of many sources addressing the issue's threat. Abstract

This study joins a growing body of research that demonstrates the behavioral consequences of hostile media perceptions. Using survey data from a nationally representative U.S. sample, this study tests a moderated-mediation model examining the direct and indirect effects of hostile media perceptions on climate change activism. The model includes external political efficacy as a mediator and political ideology and internal political efficacy as moderators. The results show that hostile media perceptions have a direct association with climate activism that is conditioned by political ideology: Among liberals, hostile media perceptions promote activism, whereas among conservatives, they decrease activism. Hostile media perceptions also have a negative, indirect relationship with activism that is mediated through external political efficacy; however, this relationship is conditioned by both ideology and internal political efficacy. Specifically, the indirect effect manifests exclusively among conservatives and moderates who have low internal efficacy. Theoretical, normative, and practical implications are discussed.
