1. Custody Conflict as a Developmental Trauma

Abstract

ABSTRACTWhile parental divorce can have a profound effect on the development of a child, the effect of a custody conflict following divorce can have an extreme, traumatic, and lifelong impact on a child. The conflict between the parents that occurred prior to their divorce can be sustained long after the parental divorce, reinforcing highly dysfunctional patterns of relationships between the parents, between each parent and child, and then put the child at risk for pathological patterns of relationships with peers and intimates. Though difficulties in the development of mature object relations and a mature sense of self are obviously at risk given this milieu of overt interpersonal conflict, anger, hatred, and parental preoccupation, difficulties in a child’s capacity to explore the environment, i.e. play, learn academically, and value their body can also be adversely affected. This paper presents cases from varying stages of childhood development to demonstrate the potentially traumatic effects on the development of children living through parental custody conflict, as well as the lifelong effect on an adult experiencing a parental custody conflict in childhood.

3. Working Models of Attachment in Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents: Relation to Psychopathology and Personality.

Abstract

This study examined the role of attachment in adolescent psychopathology among psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Subjects consisted of 60 adolescents and 27 of their mothers. Measures included the Adult Attachment Interview classification for both the adolescents and their mothers, and a battery of diagnostic and personality assessment of the adolescents. The findings revealed that the quality of adolescent attachment relationships with parents was strongly related to both clinical diagnosis and personality dimensions. A striking similarity between patients' and mothers' attachment classification also was found. Adolescents whose attachment organization was Dismissing relied upon a strategy of defensive exclusion from awareness of information which portrayed attachment relationships in a negative light. This strategy was shared by adolescent with externalizing disorders (conduct disorder, substance abuse) and by Narcissistic and Antisocial Personality Disorders and traits. Adolescents in the Preoccupied group were extremely sensitive to difficulties in their attachment relationships and overwhelmed by negative perceptions of parents. These patients were likely to have an Affective Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive, Histrionic, Borderline, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders, and dependent, avoidant, schizotypal, and dysthymic personality traits. 5. Adolescent Attachment and Psychopathology.

Abstract

In relationships among attachment classification, psychopathology, and personality, traits were examined in a group of 60 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Attachment was examined in 27 adolescent-mother pairs. Both adolescent and maternal attachment status were overwhelmingly insecure and were highly concordant. Results support a model of development of psychopathology based partially on relational experiences with parents. (KW)

31. Use of positive reinforcement conditioning to monitor pregnancy in an unanesthetized snow leopard ( Uncia uncia) via transabdominal ultrasound.

Abstract

Closely monitoring snow leopard ( Uncia uncia) fetal developments via transabdominal ultrasound, with minimal stress to the animal, was the goal of this project. The staff at Potter Park Zoo has used the principles of habituation, desensitization, and positive reinforcement to train a female snow leopard ( U. uncia). Ultrasound examinations were preformed on an unanesthetized feline at 63 and 84 days. The animal remained calm and compliant throughout both procedures. Fetuses were observed and measured on both occasions. The absence of anesthesia eliminated components of psychologic and physiologic stress associated with sedation. This was the first recorded instance of transabdominal ultrasound being carried out on an unanesthetized snow leopard. 34. Iatrogenic ocular trauma associated with infraorbital block performed for rhinoscopy in a cat: case report and preliminary imaging findings.

Abstract

Objectives: This paper describes a case of endophthalmitis in a feline patient caused by globe penetration during an infraorbital block performed to provide analgesia during rhinoscopy, and presents additional imaging and dissection data demonstrating risk of iatrogenic ocular trauma during infraorbital blocks in cats when the infraorbital canal is entered., Methods: Case records and accompanying histopathologic reports were reviewed for the feline patient. Separately, two feline cadavers were imaged using CT following placement of 5/8" 25 G needles or 1" 22 G over the needle catheters in the infraorbital canal. Infraorbital blocks with injection of trypan blue dye followed by dissection were performed in two further feline cadavers to assess the potential for globe penetration and to provide preliminary information regarding the potential efficacy of infraorbital blocks for analgesia during rhinoscopy., Results: Clinical and histopathologic findings support inadvertent globe penetration during infraorbital block as the cause for endophthalmitis in the feline patient described. CT imaging and dye injection studies further demonstrate the risks involved with this local anesthetic technique in cats., Conclusions and Relevance: Further study is needed to assess the safety and efficacy of infraorbital blocks performed for rhinoscopy in cats. Catheters may be safer anesthetic delivery devices than needles.
