12. Teachers of the Gifted: Experiences with Asynchronous Development

Abstract

Gifted students' development is asynchronous in the social, emotional, physical and cognitive domains. Because of this, unique interventions must be used by teachers of the gifted in order to best serve their developmental and educational needs. This qualitative study used transcendental phenomenology to examine and describe the experiences of teachers of the gifted with asynchronous development in their classrooms. Results showed that teachers of the gifted have a rich understanding of asynchronous development in their gifted students as well as appropriate interventions to use in the classroom. These teachers are not gaining their knowledge through their teacher preparation courses, but rather through personal research. Recommended from the results is the examination of teacher preparation programs for all teachers and to provide teachers of the gifted with the knowledge and resources they need to appropriately address asynchronous development in gifted students prior to entering the gifted classroom. 14. Long-Term Risk of Death From Heart Disease Among Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract

BackgroundMost breast cancer patients die of non-cancer causes. The risk of death from heart disease, a leading cause of death, is unknown. The aim of this study is to characterize the long-term risk of fatal heart disease in breast cancer patients.MethodsThis retrospective study used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Standard mortality ratios (SMR) were calculated for breast cancer patients diagnosed from 1992 to 2014. Patients were stratified by receipt of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, disease laterality, and diagnosis era. Hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to compare the risk of death from heart disease among other breast cancer patients.ResultsThere were 1,059,048 patients diagnosed with breast cancer from 1992 to 2014, of which 47,872 (4.6%) died from heart disease. The SMR for death from heart disease at 10+ years for patients who received only radiotherapy was 2.92 (95% CI 2.81–3.04, p < 0.001) and in patients who received only chemotherapy was 5.05 (95% CI 4.57–5.55, p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in SMR for death from heart disease for left-sided vs. right-sided disease. At 10+ years, heart disease made up 28% of deaths from non-primary cancer. HRs and ORs showed that the risk of death from heart disease was highest in patients older than 70 years of age and with longer follow-up.ConclusionThe risk of fatal heart disease was highest in older breast cancer patients with longer follow-up (i.e., >5–10 years) and who received chemotherapy. These patients should be referred to cardio-oncology clinics to mitigate this risk.

Abstract

The greater South Florida region, well known for its diverse population, its pleasant climate, and its beaches, is no exception to traffic congestion problems. Using downtown Fort Lauderdale as a case study, this paper presents the results of a practical, and transparent hybrid scoring approach for evaluating six potential train station sites. Site selection criteria and subcriteria were derived from a mix of qualitative, observational, geographic information systems and other quantitative data inputs, and include: proximity (to individual destinations versus to destination type categories of transit, live, work, and play), developability (cost, availability, ownership, size, and land use), and visual quality (accessibility, connectivity, perceived safety, and general aesthetics). Normalized scores based on the three umbrella criteria were tabulated and combined into four variant additive models. The clarity of the model inputs and scores, and ease of interpretation of the results facilitate practical planning and site design applications, and also allow for easy transferability to other study areas. Abstract

The government of Sweden encourage the development of electricity produced from renewable sources by maintaining an electricity certificates system in which producers that use renewable sources in their production are given certificates. The system is regulated in the Swedish Electricity Certificates Act (lag (2003:113) om elcertifikat). To prevent fraudulent behaviour a penalty fee is charged upon producers that have recieved certificates due to incorrect or misleading information. The penalty fee can be appealed to a court but under the Electricity Certificates Act it is not allowed to reduce or adjust. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse if the penalty fee in the Electricity Certificates Act meets the requirements of legal certainty in article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (the Convention) including right to a fair trial and to be seen as innocence until proven guilty. The method used is analysing applicable sources in accordance with the Swedish legal hierarchy in which laws have the highest value. The Convention is incorporated into Swedish law and has the same legal value as such. Judgments from the European Court of Human Rights on the Swedish tax surcharge are used for guidance on how to interpret article 6 in the Convention. Two cases from Swedish courts concerning the penalty fee are used to find what problems the penalty fee encounters in a legal process. The rules on the penalty fee does not allow adjustments of it and circumstances in each case cannot be taken into consideration, therefore the penalty fee can be charged even when it would be unreasonable and there is a conflict with legal certainty in article 6 of the Convention. For that matter rules on evidentiary issues also has to be implemented. Courts can refuse to use rules which are in conflict with the Convention, but it is concluded that a change in regulation is needed.
