Ungas erfarenheter av fiktion präglas alltmer av transmediering, i betydelsen att litterära element från det traditionella medieformatet, tryckt text, omskapas i andra medieformat (spel, filmer o.s.v.). Detta fenomen har i forskning begreppsliggjorts som textuniversum. I denna artikel diskuteras vilka typer av kompetenser som kan förknippas med textuniversumbaserad undervisning om skönlitteratur. Fyra dimensioner av kompetens ses som viktiga för textuniversumbaserad undervisning. Diskussionen utgår dels från tidigare forskning, dels från empiriska belägg hämtade från ett pågående forskningsprojekt i vilket nya former av läsning i skolan undersöks. Avslutningsvis i artikeln presenteras en didaktisk modell avsedd att hjälpa lärare i utformning av denna typ av undervisning., Young children’s experiences of fiction are increasingly characterized by transmediation, meaning that literary elements from traditional media (printed text) are re produced in other formats (games, films, etc.). This phenomenon has been conceptualized in research as transmedial worlds, also referred to as text universes. This article discusses what type of competences can be associated with text-universe-based teaching of literature. In the article, a didactical model is presented, intended to assist teachers in planning and implementing text-universe-based instruction. Four dimensions of competence are highlighted in the model: interaction, tools, narrative, and core-text-knowledge dimensions. The model is informed both by previous research and by empirical evidence from an ongoing project that investigates new forms of reading in school.

Introduction: Social activities are important for health and act as a driver of cognitive reserve during aging. In this perspective paper, we describe challenges and outline future (research) endeavors to establish better operationalization of social activities in multidomain interventions to prevent dementia. Body: We first address the lack of conceptual clarity, which makes it difficult to measure engagement in social activities. Second, drawing from our experience with the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER), we discuss social activities in multidomain dementia prevention interventions. Using qualitative data from the Multimodal Preventive Trial for Alzheimer’s Disease (MIND-ADmini), we reflect on participant experiences with social activities. Third, we address the potential and challenges of digital solutions in promoting social activities in interventions for dementia prevention. Finally, we share insights from a workshop on digital technology, where we consulted with individuals with and without cognitive impairment who have been involved in three European projects (i.e., EU-FINGERS, Multi-MeMo, and LETHE). Discussion: Based on these insights, we advocate for research that strengthens and accelerates the integration of social activities into multidomain interventions for dementia prevention. We propose several ways to achieve this: (a) by conducting mixed methods research to formulate a broadly accepted definition and instructions to measure social activities; (b) by focusing on promoting engagement in social activities beyond the intervention setting; and (c) by exploring the needs and preferences of older adults towards digitally-supported interventions and co-design of new technologies that enrich in-person social activities.

Normal aging has been shown to impact cognitive processes, including those necessary for lexical access. While there is previous research on semantic and lexical processing during lexical access, there is a limited body of research investigating how healthy aging impacts these processes specifically. The aim of this thesis project was to provide further insight into age-related changes in lexical access and compare these patterns to predictions made by two major theories of aging, the Inhibition Deficit Hypothesis (Hasher et al., 1991; Hasher & Zacks, 1988) and the Transmission Deficit Hypothesis (Burke et al., 1991; MacKay & Burke, 1990), to understand why age-related changes in processes required for lexical access may occur. The Visual World Paradigm was used to measure age-related changes in semantic and phonological processes. A group of 9 younger participants and 1 older participant completed a Visual World Paradigm (Cooper, 1974) task in which they heard a word and had to select the corresponding image on the computer. Trials consisted of a 4x4 grid with a target word (e.g., lime), a phonological competitor (e.g., lion), a semantic competitor (e.g., grapefruit), and an unrelated distractor (e.g., rock). Using an eye-tracker, data on the total time spent gazing at each competitor type was collected, analyzed, and compared descriptively between groups to understand semantic and phonologic activation patterns across the lifespan. Further statistically analysis was conducted on data from the younger participants to determine statistical significance of age-related changes in lexical access. Results from this thesis project suggest that younger adults experience similar amounts of activation across competitor types while older adults experience greater semantic activation than phonological activation. The Nordic Green Ammonia Powered Ships (NoGAPS) project has brought together key players from the Nordic shipping and energy value chains to develop a first-of-a-kind ammonia-powered gas carrier, the M/S NoGAPS. This report provides a summary of the main outputs and findings from the second phase of the NoGAPS project. It begins with an overview of the vessel design for M/S NoGAPS, outlining the general arrangement of the vessel and key design decisions behind it. This is followed by a deep dive into the commercialisation or early ammonia-powered vessels, using NoGAPS as a case study. The topic is explored from two angles: ship financing and wider economic viability.

CONTEXT: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex disorder combining hypothalamic dysfunction, neurodevelopmental delay, hypotonia, and hyperphagia with risk of obesity and its complications. PWS is caused by the loss of expression of the PWS critical region, a cluster of paternally expressed genes on chromosome 15q11.2-q13. As life expectancy of patients with PWS increases, age-related diseases like malignancies might pose a new threat to health. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of malignancies in patients with PWS and to provide clinical recommendations for cancer screening. METHODS: We included 706 patients with PWS (160 children, 546 adults). We retrospectively collected data from medical records on past or current malignancies, the type of malignancy, and risk factors for malignancy. Additionally, we searched the literature for information about the relationship between genes on chromosome 15q11.2-q13 and malignancies. RESULTS: Seven adults (age range, 18-55 years) had been diagnosed with a malignancy (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, intracranial hemangiopericytoma, melanoma, stomach adenocarcinoma, biliary cancer, parotid adenocarcinoma, and colon cancer). All patients with a malignancy had a paternal 15q11-13 deletion. The literature review showed that several genes on chromosome 15q11.2-q13 are related to malignancies. CONCLUSION: Malignancies are rare in patients with PWS. Therefore, screening for malignancies is only indicated when clinically relevant symptoms are present, such as unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, symptoms suggestive of paraneoplastic syndrome, or localizing symptoms. Given the increased cancer risk associated with obesity, which is common in PWS, participation in national screening programs should be encouraged.

In 2019 the Nordic Council (Nordic parliaments) and the Nordic Council of Ministers (representing Nordic governments) of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Aaland (hereinafter referred to as the Nordic region) decided on a joint initiative aimed at giving young people in Nordic countries the possibility of influencing the development of the Global Biodiversity Framework, thereby creating ownership of, engagement in, and trust in the political processes. New goals for protecting the biodiversity and natural resources of our planet must address the opportunities and living conditions of young people both today and in the future. Young people today are those who must develop the solutions of the future and handle the challenges that previous generations have inflicted on them. The paper presents a summary of a Nordic initiative to engage Nordic youth in development and negotiations of the Global Biodiversity Framework, which was adopted in Montreal December 2022, together with an outline of the guiding principles for Nordic youth engagement to avoid tokenism, and lessons learnt.

Background: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare, complex, genetic disorder characterized by hyperphagia, hypotonia, delayed psychomotor development, low muscle mass and hypothalamic dysfunction. Adults with PWS often have obesity, hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), known risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Early symptoms of CVD and CKD may be masked by intellectual disability and inability to express physical complaints. Furthermore, kidney diseases are often asymptomatic. Therefore, renal and cardiovascular disease might be missed in patients with PWS. Microalbuminuria is an early sign of microvascular damage in the kidneys and other vascular beds. Therefore, we screened our adult PWS cohort for the presence of elevated urinary albumin and (micro)albuminuria. Methods: We retrospectively collected anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, medical history, medication use, urine dipstick and biochemical measurements form electronic patient files. In addition, we performed a systematic literature review on kidney disease in PWS. Results: We included 162 adults with genetically confirmed PWS (56% male, median age 28 years), of whom 44 (27%) had DM2. None had known CVD. All subjects had normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) according to non-PWS reference intervals. Elevated urinary albumin or (micro)albuminuria was present in 28 (18%); 19 out of 75 (25%) had an increased urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) and 10 out of 57 (18%) had an increased urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio. Elevated urinary albumin was present at a young age (median age 26 (IQR 24-32) years) and was associated with an significantly higher BMI and LDL-cholesterol levels and higher prevalence of DM2, hypertension and dyslipidemia than those with normal UACR (p=0.027, p=0.019, p<0.001, p<0.001, p=0.011 and respectively). Context: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex rare genetic syndrome. Mortality in patients with PWS is 3% per year. In nearly half of the patients, the cause of death is of cardiopulmonary origin. Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular (CV) disease in PWS adults is complicated by the behavioral phenotype, reduced ability to express physical complaints, high pain threshold and obesity. Objective: To describe the challenges in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CV disease in PWS adults, in order to increase awareness and improve medical care. Methods: Retrospective study of medical records of adults visiting the Dutch PWS reference center. Results: We describe the challenges encountered during diagnosis and treatment of four PWS adults with heart failure. All had pre-existent peripheral edema. CV risk factors in these patients were obesity (n=4), type 2 diabetes mellitus (n=2), hypertension (n=2), hypogonadism (n=3) and sleep apnea (n=2). Remarkably, all patients were younger than 40 years during their first cardiac decompensation. All patients presented with progressive shortness of breath and/or orthopnea and progressive pitting edema. In 117 controls with PWS without CV problems, 31% had leg edema. Conclusion: Diagnosing CV problems in PWS adults is challenging. Peripheral edema is common in PWS adults without CV morbidity, which makes edema in general a poor marker for heart failure. However, when edema is of the pitting kind and progressive, this is a strong predictor of cardiac decompensation. We provide practical recommendations for diagnosing and treating CV problems in this vulnerable patient population.

CONTEXT: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare complex genetic syndrome, characterized by delayed psychomotor development, hypotonia, and hyperphagia. Hormone deficiencies such as hypogonadism, hypothyroidism, and growth hormone deficiency are common. The combination of hypotonia, low physical activity, and hypogonadism might lead to a decrease in bone mass and increase in fracture risk. Moreover, one would expect an increased risk of scoliosis due to hypotonia and low physical activity. OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence and risk factors for skeletal problems (reduced bone mineral density, fractures, and scoliosis) in adults with PWS. METHODS: We retrospectively collected patient characteristics, medical history, medication, biochemical measurements, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans, and spinal X-rays and reviewed the current literature. RESULTS: We included 354 adults with PWS (median age 31 years; 43% males), of whom 51 (14%) had osteoporosis (T-score below -2.5) and 143 (54%) had osteopenia (T-score -1 to -2.5). The most prevalent modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis were hypogonadism, insufficient dairy intake, sedentary lifestyle, and corticosteroid use. Male sex was associated with osteoporosis (P = .005). Growth hormone treatment was not associated with osteoporosis. A history of vertebral fractures was present in 10 (3%) and nonvertebral fractures in 59 (17%). Scoliosis was present in 263 (80%), but no modifiable risk factors were identified. CONCLUSION: Besides scoliosis, osteoporosis is common in adults with PWS. Based on the literature and the risk factors for osteoporosis found in our cohort, we provide practical clinical recommendations to avoid skeletal complications in these vulnerable patients.
