Kidney cancer is a global health concern, and accurate assessment of patient frailty is crucial for optimizing surgical outcomes. This paper introduces AI Age Discrepancy, a novel metric derived from machine learning analysis of preoperative abdominal CT scans, as a potential indicator of frailty and postoperative risk in kidney cancer patients. This retrospective study of 599 patients from the 2023 Kidney Tumor Segmentation (KiTS) challenge dataset found that a higher AI Age Discrepancy is significantly associated with longer hospital stays and lower overall survival rates, independent of established factors. Consider a collection of points and the sets of slopes or directions of the lines between pairs of points. It is known that the algebraic matroid on this set of elements is the well studied 2-dimensional rigidity matroid. This article analyzes a construction on top of the set of slopes given by an angle constraint system of incidences and angles. We consider the critical points (equilibria) of a planar potential generated by $n$ Newtonian point masses augmented with a quadratic term (such as arises from a centrifugal effect). Particular cases of this problem have been considered previously in studies of the circular restricted $n$-body problem. We show that the number of equilibria is finite for a generic set of parameters, and we establish estimates for the number of equilibria. We prove that the number of equilibria is bounded below by $n+1$, and we provide examples to show that this lower bound is sharp. We prove an upper bound on the number of equilibria that grows exponentially in $n$. In order to establish a lower bound on the maximum number of equilibria, we analyze a class of examples, referred to as ``ring configurations'', consisting of $n-1$ equal masses positioned at vertices of a regular polygon with an additional mass located at the center. Previous numerical observations indicate that these configurations can produce as many as $5n-5$ equilibria. We verify analytically that the ring configuration has at least $5n-5$ equilibria when the central mass is sufficiently small. We conjecture that the maximum number of equilibria grows linearly with the number of point masses. We also discuss some mathematical similarities to other equilibrium problems in mathematical physics, namely, Maxwell's problem from electrostatics and the image counting problem from gravitational lensing., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

We study the univariate moment problem of piecewise-constant density functions on the interval $[0,1]$ and its consequences for an inference problem in population genetics. We show that, up to closure, any collection of $n$ moments is achieved by a step function with at most $n-1$ breakpoints and that this bound is tight. We use this to show that any point in the $n$th coalescence manifold in population genetics can be attained by a piecewise constant population history with at most $n-2$ changes. The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic has transformed almost every facet of human society throughout the world. Against an emerging, highly transmissible disease with no definitive treatment or vaccine, governments worldwide have implemented non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) to slow the spread of the virus. Examples of such interventions include community actions (e.g. school closures, restrictions on mass gatherings), individual actions (e.g. mask wearing, self-quarantine), and environmental actions (e.g. public facility cleaning). We present the Worldwide Non-pharmaceutical Interventions Tracker for COVID-19 (WNTRAC), a comprehensive dataset consisting of over 6,000 NPIs implemented worldwide since the start of the pandemic. WNTRAC covers NPIs implemented across 261 countries and territories, and classifies NPI measures into a taxonomy of sixteen NPI types. NPI measures are automatically extracted daily from Wikipedia articles using natural language processing techniques and manually validated to ensure accuracy and veracity. We hope that the dataset is valuable for policymakers, public health leaders, and researchers in modeling and analysis efforts for controlling the spread of COVID-19., Comment: Updated title (Artificial Intelligence => AI). A combinatorial neural code $\mathscr C\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ is convex if it arises as the intersection pattern of convex open subsets of $\mathbb R^d$. We relate the emerging theory of convex neural codes to the established theory of oriented matroids, both categorically and with respect to geometry and computational complexity. On the categorical side, we show that the map taking an acyclic oriented matroid to the code of positive parts of its topes is a faithful functor. We adapt the oriented matroid ideal introduced by Novik, Postnikov, and Sturmfels into a functor from the category of oriented matroids to the category of rings; then, we show that the resulting ring maps naturally to the neural ring of the matroid's neural code. For geometry and computational complexity, we show that a code has a realization with convex polytopes if and only if it lies below the code of a representable oriented matroid in the partial order of codes introduced by Jeffs. We show that previously published examples of non-convex codes do not lie below any oriented matroids, and we construct examples of non-convex codes lying below non-representable oriented matroids. By way of this construction, we can apply Mn\"{e}v-Sturmfels universality to show that deciding whether a combinatorial code is convex is NP-hard.

Deep neural networks have become the default choice for many of the machine learning tasks such as classification and regression. Dropout, a method commonly used to improve the convergence of deep neural networks, generates an ensemble of thinned networks with extensive weight sharing. Recent studies that dropout can be viewed as an approximate variational inference in Gaussian processes, and used as a practical tool to obtain uncertainty estimates of the network. We propose a novel statistical mechanics based framework to dropout and use this framework to propose a new generic algorithm that focuses on estimates of the variance of the loss as measured by the ensemble of thinned networks. Our approach can be applied to a wide range of deep neural network architectures and machine learning tasks. In classification, this algorithm allows the generation of a don't-know answer to be generated, which can increase the reliability of the classifier. Empirically we demonstrate state-of-the-art AUC results on publicly available benchmarks.

Biases in observational data of treatments pose a major challenge to estimating expected treatment outcomes in different populations. An important technique that accounts for these biases is reweighting samples to minimize the discrepancy between treatment groups. We present a novel reweighting approach that uses bi-level optimization to alternately train a discriminator to minimize classification error, and a balancing weights generator that uses exponentiated gradient descent to maximize this error. This approach borrows principles from generative adversarial networks (GANs) to exploit the power of classifiers for measuring two-sample divergence. We provide theoretical results for conditions in which the estimation error is bounded by two factors: (i) the discrepancy measure induced by the discriminator; and (ii) the weights variability. Experimental results on several benchmarks comparing to previous state-of-the-art reweighting methods demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in estimating causal effects.

In recent years, various notions of algebraic independence have emerged as a central and unifying theme in a number of areas of applied mathematics, including algebraic statistics and the rigidity theory of bar-and-joint frameworks. In each of these settings the fundamental problem is to determine the extent to which certain unknowns depend algebraically on given data. This has, in turn, led to a resurgence of interest in algebraic matroids, which are the combinatorial formalism for algebraic (in)dependence. A convex code is a binary code generated by the pattern of intersections of a collection of open convex sets in some Euclidean space. Convex codes are relevant to neuroscience as they arise from the activity of neurons that have convex receptive fields. In this paper, we use algebraic methods to determine if a code is convex. Specifically, we use the neural ideal of a code, which is a generalization of the Stanley-Reisner ideal. Using the neural ideal together with its standard generating set, the canonical form, we provide algebraic signatures of certain families of codes that are non-convex. We connect these signatures to the precise conditions on the arrangement of sets that prevent the codes from being convex. Finally, we also provide algebraic signatures for some families of codes that are convex, including the class of intersection-complete codes. Hyperplane codes are a class of convex codes that arise as the output of a one layer feed-forward neural network. Here we establish several natural properties of stable hyperplane codes in terms of the {\it polar complex} of the code, a simplicial complex associated to any combinatorial code. We prove that the polar complex of a stable hyperplane code is shellable and show that most currently known properties of the hyperplane codes follow from the shellability of the appropriate polar complex., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures. The sample frequency spectrum (SFS), which describes the distribution of mutant alleles in a sample of DNA sequences, is a widely used summary statistic in population genetics. The expected SFS has a strong dependence on the historical population demography and this property is exploited by popular statistical methods to infer complex demographic histories from DNA sequence data. Most, if not all, of these inference methods exhibit pathological behavior, however. Specifically, they often display runaway behavior in optimization, where the inferred population sizes and epoch durations can degenerate to 0 or diverge to infinity, and show undesirable sensitivity of the inferred demography to perturbations in the data. The goal of this paper is to provide theoretical insights into why such problems arise. To this end, we characterize the geometry of the expected SFS for piecewise-constant demographic histories and use our results to show that the aforementioned pathological behavior of popular inference methods is intrinsic to the geometry of the expected SFS. We provide explicit descriptions and visualizations for a toy model with sample size 4, and generalize our intuition to arbitrary sample sizes n using tools from convex and algebraic geometry. We also develop a universal characterization result which shows that the expected SFS of a sample of size n under an arbitrary population history can be recapitulated by a piecewise-constant demography with only k(n) epochs, where k(n) is between n/2 and 2n-1. The set of expected SFS for piecewise-constant demographies with fewer than k(n) epochs is open and non-convex, which causes the above phenomena for inference from data., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

We present algebraic techniques to analyze state space models in the areas of structural identifiability, observability, and indistinguishability. While the emphasis is on surveying existing algebraic tools for studying ODE systems, we also present a variety of new results. In particular: on structural identifiability, we present a method using linear algebra to find identifiable functions of the parameters of a model for unidentifiable models. On observability, we present techniques using Gr\"obner bases and algebraic matroids to test algebraic observability of state space models. On indistinguishability, we present a sufficient condition for distinguishability using computational algebra and demonstrate testing indistinguishability., Comment: 1 figure

The geometry of the set of restrictions of rank-one tensors to some of their coordinates is studied. This gives insight into the problem of rank-one completion of partial tensors. Particular emphasis is put on the semialgebraic nature of the problem, which arises for real tensors with constraints on the parameters. The algebraic boundary of the completable region is described for tensors parametrized by probability distributions and where the number of observed entries equals the number of parameters.
