Plastic surgery is a surgical speciality, which typically receives little attention during medical school. Students and newly qualified doctors may therefore wish to develop skills and knowledge within the field of plastic surgery to mitigate a lack of undergraduate exposure. The MY Plastic Surgery Course–Essential Plastic Surgery Skills for Junior Doctors is a course aimed at this cohort; it is a 2-day course based in Yorkshire, organized by plastic surgeons, and covers a broad range of foundational skills in plastic surgery.We present an outline and assessment of the 2022 course, as well as discussing the extent to which it has improved and developed on feedback published in 2021.Overall, the authors found that this course was an excellent introduction to plastic surgery, and we recommend it to medical professionals interested in this surgical speciality.

This article explains the quantitative approach and how it can be useful to nurse managers. If the elements that constitute nursing performance are listed and standards are set for each element, then nursing performance can be evaluated quantitatively. Each element of each nurse's performance is given a numerical rating. These numerical ratings provide the nurse manager with a shorthand report of overall and individual stall performance.

Two matched samples of 245 patients were drawn from solo dental practices which contained both capitation and fee-for-service components. All services rendered to patients during their entire time under care of the practice were recorded and analyzed. Results indicate different styles of care under the two payment mechanisms. An improved preventive style was associated with capitation, as well as fewer fillings. Outcome measured by a modification of the DMF (decayed-missing-filled) Index was also more favorable under capitation.

Dimethyl sulfoxide and water were compared as solvents for determination of LD50values by the oral route in rats and mice using 10 quaternary ammonium salts as test compounds. Toxicity changes were obtained in some instances with 50% DMSO; more changes were observed in rats than in mice and the two species did not always parallel each other. When toxicity was altered by DMSO; it increased in all instances except one. Slope was changed in only 2 tests, one each in rats and mice but not with the same compound.

PEER REVIEW is the time-honored approach to the assurance of quality medical care. As pressure for the accountability of the medical profession has increased, participation in peer-review activities has often been characterized by physicians and hospital managers as a burden and a time commitment that is less than productive. However, it is a time commitment that physicians and hospitals will most likely be unable to avoid regardless of legislative or other changes. More importantly, effective peer review requires systematic clinical judgments that only physicians can provide. Insights drawn from information system theory might improve the peer-review process, thereby using the time invested more effectively.The burdensome aspects of peer review are the result of two forces. The first is the medical profession's tradition of autonomy and confidentiality in peer review. This tradition has resulted in private committee discussions and frequent recommendations for actions to department chairmen or medical boards. The

1) A method for testing mercurial diuretics by the oral route of administration in dogs has been presented. 2) Six mercurated substituted-N-n-propylurea derivatives have been tested by this method and found to be active diuretics.
