Abstract

In this work, we investigated the response of the stem cells from the roots of Allium Cepa (meristems) to ionizing and non-ionizing radiations of different qualities. Allium cepa (Onion) is a well-established in-vivo standard model, widely used in cytogenetic studies for different environmental pollutants. Endpoints, such as chromosomal aberrations (CAs), micronuclei (MNs), and disturbance in the mitotic cycle of root meristematic cells of onion are frequently used to determine the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of different environmental pollutants. Traditionally, these studies have been carried out to assess chemical toxicity, while the toxicity of ionizing radiation has been studied less extensively. We also examined the repurposing of a previously described optical microscope system originally designed for automated non-fluorescent micronucleus (MN) scoring in binucleated peripheral lymphocytes. The microscope system relies on hardware and software layers in parallel in order to optimize the performance in automated MN scoring.

Abstract

Background: Besides inducing behavioral unresponsiveness, a key goal of anesthesia is to prevent the experience of surgery (connected consciousness) by inducing either unconsciousness or disconnection of consciousness from the environment. In pursuing this key goal, avoiding the risk of postoperative cognitive dysfunction is also necessary. In this case report we relate electroencephalography waveform characteristics during intraoperative bispectral index monitoring to long-term neurocognitive decline. Case presentation: We describe the case of two 68-year-old homozygous twins who underwent the same general anaesthesia regimen, but had different results on neurocognitive testing 12 months postoperatively. Neurocognitive tests (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Trail Making Test A and B, Digit Span Test, and Frontal Assessment Battery) were performed in three different times: the day before surgery, the third day postoperatively, and 12 months after surgery for follow-up. During anaesthesia, connected consciousness and anaesthesia depth were monitored using the isolated forearm technique and bispectral index monitoring. The mean value of bispectral index was lower in one twin (S1) than in the other (S2). Moreover, the same twin who presented lower values of bispectral index had two episodes of burst suppression, whereas the other had none. Regarding the neurocognitive evaluations, both twins did not show significative differences between the tests performed before and after surgery, but an important difference was founded at the 12-month follow-up, when only one twin (S1) showed distinctly worse test scores than previous, denoting a significant cognitive decline. Conclusions: This case-report suggests that bispectral index electroencephalography waveform characteristics during intraoperative bispectral index monitoring may be useful in detecting brain’s susceptibility to general anaesthesia and in predicting long-term neurocognitive decline.

Abstract

Mediterranean cities maintain traces of their past despite more recent urban transformations. The paper focuses on the town of Candia, a strategic site in Venice’s maritime domain (1207-1669). After extensive urban demolition and reconstruction, the memory of Venetian Candia survives in its road network, place names, and archaeological remains. Some maps and cadastral sources of the early modern period highlight known and less-known elements of its lost urban landscape.

Abstract

Background: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a leading cause of nontraumatic spinal cord injury. Surgery aims to arrest neurological decline and improve conditions, but controversies surround risks and benefits in elderly patients, outcomes in mild myelopathy, and the risk of adjacent segment disease (ASD)., Methods: Retrospective data of patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for DCM in our hospital were collected. Patients were stratified by preoperative modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) (mild, moderate, severe) and age (under 70, over 70). Clinical outcomes, complications, and ASD rate were analyzed. We evaluated the relationship between mJOA recovery rate and the risk of complications and various preoperative parameters., Results: Five hundred seven consecutive patients were included in the study, with a mean follow-up of 43.52 months (12-71). Improvement in all outcome variables was observed in mild, moderate, and severe myelopathy categories, with elderly patients showing a lower improvement. Except for age, no other variable correlated with mJOA recovery rate. We observed 45 complications (11.1% of patients), with 14 in the U70 group and 31 in the O70 group (P value < 0.001). Age, Charlson comorbidity index, and ASA score were found to be predictors of complications. Fourteen patients (2.8% of total), mean age 54.2, developed radiological and clinical ASD. Most had cranial-level ASD with Pfirmann grade ≥ 2 before index surgery., Conclusions: Most myelopathic patients improve after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Elderly patients show a lower improvement and higher complication rates than their younger counterparts.
